The number of global cryptocurrency hedge funds has reached a record high of 226, according to research firm Autonomous Next. The hedge funds tracked by leading hedge fund database provider Eurekahedge show a return of 1,477.85 percent in 2017 on average.

While law enforcement is still piecing together the shooters motives, some public figures and news reports are focusing on his mental health. It is important to remember that only a very small percentage of violent acts are committed by people who are diagnosed with, or in treatment for, mental illness. Framing the conversation about gun violence in the context of mental illness does a disservice to the victims of violence and unfairly stigmatizes the many others with mental illness. More important, it does not direct us to appropriate solutions to this public health crisis.

From The Intercept: A new piece of legislation attempting to revolutionize the foster care system recently passed despite significant opposition. The Family First Prevention Services Act allows states to use federal funds for preventative mental health and substance use programs to keep at-risk children in their homes instead of the foster system.
The Family First Prevention Services Act will usher in the most significant improvements to the child welfare system in decades and provide real help to families to fight the opioid epidemic, Wyden said in a statement. We owe our most vulnerable children the best chance to stay with their families when its safe to keep them at home and the highest standards of care to protect children who are already in foster care.
Children are taken from their families in cases of abuse but more often than not, Sandy Santana, executive director for Childrens Rights, said, kids enter the foster care system because of neglect that stems primarily from issues of poverty or substance abuse.
With the opioid epidemic, more and more kids are coming into the system because their parents are dependent on opioids, Santana said. For the government now to redirect funding for substance abuse and preventative services to keep those kids that are at risk of entering foster care with their families is a big, big deal.'

The slogan for Estill County is where the bluegrass kisses the mountains. But since 2015 the county, population 15,000, is widely known as the place where radioactive material generated by the oil and gas industry in a process known as fracking was dumped near some schools.
As the Ohio Valley ReSource reported in 2016, tons of waste from the drilling practice known as fracking was hauled from state to state before being improperly disposed of in a county landfill not designed to hold radioactive material.
Drilling waste is also being dumped into public landfills in West Virginia.
This week the Concerned Citizens of Estill County and state officials squared off over how to best deal with the tons of radioactive waste. The landfill owners have been fined and are required to create a mitigation plan. Officials with the Kentucky Energy and Environmental Cabinet want to keep the waste in place. But local residents have a different idea. In the two years since the waste was discovered the community has come to a consensus on what should happen with the illegally dumped waste: Dig it up and move it out.
Estill County concerned citizen Tom Bonny makes the case for removing the radioactive waste at a public hearing.
Concerned Citizens member Tom Bonny said he first thought keeping the waste in place was the better solution. But when he considered the long-half life of the radioactive material coupled with its location near Estill Countys schools, he thought of the long-term consequences to the community. He is also concerned about the proximity of the landfill to the Kentucky River and potential danger to the water supply not only in Irvine but downstream. So, he changed his mind.
He said most folks hes talked to feel the same way. The majority of the people I have spoken with indicate they will not have full peace of mind if it is left in place, he said.

Abstract: Scopolamine, an anti-muscarinic agent, has been shown to induce amnesia and oxidative stress similar to that observed in the older age. The present study was designed to determine the relationship between the oxidative status and memory improvement in scopolamine injected rats pre-administered with almonds. Rats (n=8) in the almond group were administered orally with 400 mg/kg almond suspension for 28 days daily before the intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg). Passive avoidance task (PAT) was used to assess memory function at the end of treatment. The present study revealed that scopolamine injection significantly impaired the memory function in rats pre-treated with saline which was accompanied by increased oxidative stress as evident by increased brain malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and reduced activities of antioxidant enzymes as compared to healthy controls. Pre-treatment withalmond significantly ameliorated scopolamine-induced oxidative stress and memory dysfunction. These findings suggest that dietary supplementation with almonds may have a beneficial effect in reducing the risk of oxidative stress-induced memory loss and delaying or preventing the onset of age-related memory impairment.

Abstract: Carotenoids, including-carotene, lycopene, and derivatives, such as retinoic acid, have been studied for their significant antiproliferative and differentiating activity on cancer cells in experimental models and in clinics. We are presenting here data on the mechanism of action of a carotenoid-enriched extract obtained from the pumpkin, variety"long of Naples,"on two malignant human cell lines, Caco-2 and SAOs, derived from a colon adenocarcinoma and an osteosarcoma, respectively. The carotenoid extract has been obtained from pumpkin pulp and seeds by supercritical COextraction and employed to prepare oil-in-water nanoemulsions. The nanoemulsions, applied at a final carotenoid concentration of 200-400g/ml, were not cytotoxic, but induced a delay in cell growth of about 40% in both SAOs and Caco-2 cell lines. This effect was associated with the activation of a"nonprotective"form of autophagy and, in SAOs cells, to the induction of cell differentiation via a mechanism that involved AMPK activation. Our data suggest the presence of a pool of bioactive compounds in the carotenoid-enriched extract, acting additively, or synergistically, to delay cell growth in cancer cells.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Nut intake has been associated with decreased cancer-related mortality, but few studies have examined the potential of nuts in the chemoprevention of pancreatic cancer. We prospectively investigated the association of total nut, tree nut, peanut, and peanut butter consumption with pancreatic cancer risk.METHODS: In the Netherlands Cohort Study, 120,852 men and women completed a baseline questionnaire, including a food frequency questionnaire, in 1986. After 20.3 years of follow-up, 583 incident pancreatic cancer cases, including 349 microscopically confirmed pancreatic cancer (MCPC) cases, were included in multivariable case-cohort analyses.RESULTS: Increased total nut consumption was associated with a non-significantly decreased MCPC risk in men (HR (95% CI) for 10+ g/day vs. nonconsumers = 0.72 (0.47-1.11), P-trend = 0.163). No clear association was found in women. For tree nut and peanut consumption, non-significant inverse associations were observed in men. In women, no or unclear associations were found for tree nut and peanut consumption. Peanut butter intake was related to a significantly reduced risk of MCPC in men (HR (95% CI) for 5+ g/day vs. nonconsumers = 0.53 (0.28-1.00), P-trend = 0.047), but this relation was not clear in women. Evidence for a nonlinear dose-response relation with MCPC was found for tree nut intake only. The associations were weaker when looking at total pancreatic cancer.CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that nuts and peanut butter might reduce pancreatic cancer risk in men. In women, no or unclear associations were found.IMPACT: Nut consumption might reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer in men.

PMID: 29315019 Abstract Title: Time and Intervention Effects of Daily Almond Intake on the Changes of Lipid Profile and Body Composition Among Free-Living Healthy Adults. Abstract: Favorable health benefits of almond have been shown in several previous studies. However, repeated measures, randomized, controlled trials to investigate the changes due to almond intake based on the time effects have not yet been reported. The current study was conducted to evaluate the effects of daily almond intake on changes in body composition and lipid profiles for 20 weeks with four measurements among healthy adults. Participants in the almond group showed favorable changes on blood lipid profiles, including levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL-C) after consuming 56g of almond per day for 20 weeks compared with those at baseline. At week 20, subjects in the almond group showed significantly decreased TC, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, TG, body fat mass, and waist-hip ratio compared with those of the control group who consumed isocaloric control food. The mixed model also confirmed that there were significant time effects in several bioimpedance indicators (i.e., total body protein, fat-free mass, etc.) and all of the lipid profile parameters in the almond group. These results confirm the effects of lipid-lowering and modifying body composition of almond consumption. In addition, our results suggest that the measuring time points would be critical to capture the effects of dietary intervention.

However, there are few data on the health effects of cashew nuts among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effects of cashew nut supplementation on glycemia, body weight, blood pressure, and lipid profile in Asian Indians with T2DM.Methods: In a parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial, 300 adults with T2DM [mean SD age: 51 9.3 y; body mass index (BMI; in kg/m2): 26.0 3.4; 55% male] were randomly assigned to receive advice to follow a standard diabetic diet (control) or similar advice plus 30 g cashew nuts/d (intervention) for 12 wk. The macronutrient composition of the prescribed diabetic diet was60-65% energy from carbohydrates, 15-25% from fat, and the rest from protein. Differences between groups in changes in anthropometric and biochemical variables were analyzed using linear models with robust variance estimation under an assumed independence working correlation.Results: Participants in the intervention group had a greater decrease in systolic blood pressure from baseline to 12 wk than did controls (-4.9 13.7 compared with -1.7 11.6 mm Hg; P = 0.04) and a greater increase in plasma HDL cholesterol compared with controls (+1.7 5.6 compared with +0.1 4.6 mg/dL; P = 0.01). There were no differences between the groups with respect to changes in body weight, BMI, blood lipid, and glycemic variables. Plasma oleic acid concentrations and self-reported dietary intake of nuts, oleic acid, and monounsaturated fatty acids suggested excellent compliance with the nut consumption.Conclusion: Cashew nut supplementation in Asian Indians with T2DM reduced systolic blood pressure and increased HDL cholesterol concentrations with no deleterious effects on body weight, glycemia, or other lipid variables. However, this nut diet is just one component of the multi-nutrient dietary intervention for health aging.CONCLUSION: More longitudinal controlled randomized studies have to be performed in this field to prove the efficacy of the nut nutrition for the delay of cognitive decline.

Plantamajoside (PMS), a major compound of Plantago asiatica (PA), was reported to have the antioxidant effects. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of PMS on Cd-induced renal damage in the NRK-52E cell and rat kidney tissue. Cd exposure increased the ROS generation, lipid peroxidation, serum biochemical values of renal damage, and mRNA and protein expressions of KIM-1 in vitro and in vivo. The significant reduction in glutathione (GSH)/glutathione disulfide (GSSG) ratio and activities of antioxidant enzymes were also observed in the rats treated with Cd. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulate via gradual formation from skin proteins, especially from long-lived proteins such as dermal elastin and collagen. Plantamajoside (PM), isolated from Plantago asiatica, has various biological effects including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In this study, we assessed the protective effects of PM on a human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) and primary human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) against stress caused by glyceraldehyde-induced AGEs (glycer-AGEs) with UVB irradiation. We found that PM attenuated UVB- and-glycer-AGEs-induced MMP-1 expression in HaCaT and HDF cells and proinflammatory cytokines expression by inhibiting the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activated by reactive oxygen species. Specific inhibitors of NF-B and MAPKs attenuated the induced expression of MMP-1. PM also inhibited the phosphorylation of IB, and reduced nuclear translocation of NF-B in these cells. PSEE has abundant polyphenols with strong antioxidant activity. PSEE (100, 200 or 300 mg/kg) was oral administrated to the diabetic rats once daily consecutively for 8 weeks. Oral administration of PSEE resulted in significant reduction of hyperglycemia, the diameter of the retinal vessels, and retinal vascular permeability and leukostasis in diabetic rats. In addition, PSEE administration increased the activities of superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH) level in diabetic retinae. PSEE treatment inhibited the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) and the phosphorylation of Akt without altering the Akt protein expression in diabetic retinae. PSEE not only down-regulated the gene expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (TNF-) and interleukin-1 (IL-1), but also reduced ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 expression in diabetic retinae. Currently, to prevent or treat obesity and associated metabolic disorders, herbal dietary supplements or medicines have attracted more and more attention owing to their relative effectiveness with fewer significant side effects. We investigate the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms ofL. seed extract (PSE) on obesity and associated metabolic disorders in high-fat (HF) diet-induced mice. Our results displayed that PSE did not modify food intake or body weight but decreased abdominal white adipose tissue ratio, white/brown adipocyte size, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol, free fatty acid, and hepatic TG concentrations when compared with the HF group. The levels of fasting blood glucose and glucose tolerance were improved in the PSE group when compared with the HF group. Furthermore, PSE upregulated mRNA expressions of peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) and target genes related to fatty acid metabolism and energy expenditure in liver and adipose tissue of obese mice when compared with the HF group. PSE treatment effectively improved lipid and glucose metabolism in HF diet-induced obese mice. These effects might be attributed to the upregulation of PPAR signaling.

MESA, ARIZONA The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (The National Center) sends its deepest condolences to Lummi Nation and the entire Kinley family after the death of long-serving National Center Board Member Larry G. Kinley. Kinley lost his battle with lung cancer on February 13th. A member of the Board since 1988, Kinley worked tirelessly to promote the values and goals of The National Center, the Lummi Nation, and all of Indian Country.
In his 30-year tenure with The National Center, Larry brought wisdom and vision to our Board of Directors, and helped bring our organization into the 21st Century, National Center Board Chairman Derrick Watchman said. He was a leader not only through his work at the National Center but also with the Lummi people and throughout Washington state. He will be missed by all who worked with him and had the honor of knowing him.
Larry began his life of service in the United States Army. After his service, he joined the Lummi Indian Business Council, where he served as Chairman from 1974-1975 and 1981-1989. He was instrumental in not only advancing the largest tribal fishing fleet, but also in expanding the Northwest Indian College (NWIC), the Lummi School District, Fishermans Cove, the Silver Reef Hotel Casino & Spa, the new Tribal Government administration building, several mini-marts, and a processing plant. Larry was instrumental in developing the Centennial Accord, which provided a bridge between the tribes and brought Tribal Leaders to the table with the Governor of Washington State and their agencies.

When they arrived, she could see that Ty had a lot of energy and was going a little stir-crazy from being kept in a crate for so long. So, instead of bringing him right to his enclosure, she decided to let him have a little fun.

My question relates to your view that we are looking at a complete collapse of Quantitative Easing and that will likely see a massive capital flight to the dollar and the major safe haven will be EQUITIES. In the context of this possibility, are you able to comment on how this may relate to Real Estate. Your ECM seems to be calling for Real Estate to top out and structurally fall in 2032. Is it not possible that with the collapse of QE and potentially economies that we will see more negative rates in the short end and with the government powers to seize assets in bank accounts, would it not be prudent to have zero cash in hand and hence we see a massive capital flight to Real Estate too? Or will the collapse of QE lead to significantly higher rates across the curve and hence blow all leveraged exposure sky high?

ANSWER: The problem with real estate has been that its value depends upon lending. This was what the government did as part of the New Deal by creating 30-year mortgages. This was a scheme to get prices up by extending the period people could pay off the loan. Typically, the duration was 5 years previously.
The collapse in Quantitative Easing will have the effect of causing rates to rise on the long-term. However, there will be a shift toward private assets and this will help to a large extent. However, keep in mind that many institutions will be trapped and unable to shift to private assets. Many boards will not understand the shift and still believe, wrongly, that unsecured government debt is best.
Prices of real estate will decline in proportion to the decline in mortgage availability. We are already witnessing banks beginning to withdraw from lending on real estate.

Budgets are statements: This is what we care about. Its money that reveals priorities. The we could be, and ought to be, the country. Or the we could be a presidential administration thats not really equipped to govern. So there will be lots of stories this year, like last year, about the Trumps administrations desire to cut federal Indian programs, wipe out public broadcasting, end student loan forgiveness, wreck Medicaid and Medicare, food stamps, housing programs, and generally just about every federal program that serves poor people.
As Trump budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters: This is a messaging document.
And what a message: Rich people face tough times so they deserved a huge tax cut. Poor people are poor because of their own failures. And more money is needed for a wall thats not needed, for the largest military in the world, and the Republicans no longer believe that deficits matter.
But Mulvaney has a different version. Here is what he says are the messages.
Number one, you dont have to spend all of this money, Congress. But if you do, here is how we would prefer to see you spend it, he said. And the other message is that we do not have to have trillion-dollar deficits forever.

Intervention was done twice a day for 4 weeks in the both groups. Photography and an evaluation of DFUhealing were conducted by a checklist and then were scored at baseline and at the end of each week. This past Tuesday, less than a year after this campaign, Calgary Zoo euthanized Kali for a reason some animal welfare advocates are struggling to understand. According to a zoo employee who contacted Zoocheck, a Canadian animal protection organization, Calgary Zoo killed Kali simply to make room for a group of younger wolves.

Abstract: Obesity and a high-fat diet (HFD) are known to increase the incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Oxidative stress, a major risk factor for AD, is increased with HFD consumption. Thymol (Thy) has antioxidant properties. Therefore, in the present study, we examined the protective and therapeutic effects of Thy on amyloid- (A)-induced impairments in the hippocampal synaptic plasticity of HFD-fed rats. In this study, 72 adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 9 groups (n=8 rats/group): Group 1 (control; standard diet); Group 2: Control+phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)+Oil (Thy vehicle); Group 3 (HFD+PBS); Group 4: (HFD+A); Group 5: Control+PBS+Thy; Group 6: (HFD+A+Oil); Group 7: Control+A+Thy; Group 8: HFD+PBS+Thy; Group 9: (HFD+A+Thy). After stereotaxic surgery, the field potentials were recorded afterthe implantation of the recording and stimulating electrodes in the dentate gyrus (DG) and perforant pathway, respectively. Following high-frequency stimulation, the long-term potentiation (LTP) of the population spike (PS) amplitude and the slope of the excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were measured in the DG. The HFD rats that received A exhibited a significant decrease in their EPSP slope and PS amplitude as compared to the control group. In contrast, Thy administration in the HFD+A rats reduced the decrease in the EPSP slope and PS amplitude. Thy decreased the A-induced LTP impairments in HFD rats. The HFD significantly increased serum malondialdehyde levels and decreased total antioxidant capacity and total glutathione levels; whereas, Thy supplementation significantly reversed these parameters. Therefore, these results suggest that Thy, a natural antioxidant,can be therapeutic against high risk factors for AD, such as HFD.

Both doses of TQ decreased malondialdehyde and nitric oxide metabolites in the brain while enhanced the thiol content and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities and serum T4 level. The results of the present study showed that TQ protected against PTU-induced memory impairments in rats.

Abstract: Streptozotocin (STZ), a glucosamine-nitrosourea compound, produces deficiencies in learning, memory, and cognitive functions when it was administered intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v). In molecular level, increase in neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in brain, and decrease in the number of surviving neurons are the outcomes of STZ administration. Herein, we aimed to investigate the effect of thymoquinone (TQ), an anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and neuroprotective agent, on STZ-induced neurodegeneration in rats. For this purpose, bilateral i.c.v. injection of STZ (3mg/kg) was given to adult female rats on days 1 and 3. TQ (20mg/kg/day in cornoil) was administered intragastrically to rats for 15 days starting from the 15th day of STZ injection. The Morris water maze test and passive avoidance test were applied to measure the learning and memory performance of animals. Following the behavioral tests, all of the rats were sacrificed for evaluation of molecular alterations. Rats in the STZ-TQ group showed higher performance in passive avoidance test than rats in the STZ group whose memory performance declined compared to control group. The worse memoryperformance in STZ group was correlated with low number of surviving neurons and high number of degenerating neurons. In addition, an increase in APOE expression and a decrease in NGF expression were observed with STZ injection. Administration of TQ reversed these STZ-triggered cognitive and molecular alterations. In the present study, we observed the neuroregenerative effects of TQ by activation of JNK protein, upregulation of mir-124, and downregulation of ERK1/2 and NOS enzymes. The same ameliorative effect of TQ was also observed in the pTau protein expression. To sum up, we can say thatthe healing effect of TQ on STZ induced neurodegeneration opens a new door for the development of Alzheimer's disease treatment using natural products as an adjuvant when their action mechanism was explained in detail.

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate whether treatment with xanthohumol (XN), the principal prenylated chalconoid from Humulus lupulus (hops), is protective in a mouse model of light-induced retinal degeneration (LIRD).Methods: Mice (129S2/SvPasCrl) were intraperitoneally injected with vehicle or XN prior to toxic light exposure and every 3 days thereafter. Retinal function was assessed by electroretinograms at 1, 2, and 4 weeks following toxic light exposure. Visual acuity was tested by optokinetic tracking 1 week and 4 weeks after toxic light exposure. Retina sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for morphologic analysis or by TUNEL. Redox potentials were assessed in retinal tissue by measuring levels of cysteine (CYS), cystine (CYSS), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) using HPLC with fluorescence detection.Results: Toxic light significantly suppressed retinal function and visual acuity, severely disrupted the photoreceptor cell layer, and significantly decreased the number of nuclei and increased the accumulation of TUNEL-labeled cells in the outer nuclear layer. These effects were prevented by XN treatment. Treatment with XN also maintained GSSG and CYSS redox potentials and the total CYS pool in retinas of mice undergoing toxic light exposure.Conclusions: XN treatment partially preserved visual acuity and retinal function in the LIRD mouse. Preservation of retinal CYS and of GSSG and CYSS redox potentials may indicate that XN treatment induces an increased antioxidant response, but further experiments are needed to verify this potential mechanism. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report protective effects of XN in a model of retinal degeneration.

Abstract: Bacterial biofilms pose a serious medical problem due to their significant resistance to antimicrobials, and staphylococci are recognized as the most frequent cause of biofilm-associated infections. The hop plant (Humulus lupulus L.) contains substances that have been determined to act as anti-infective agents against bacteria, mainly in planktonic form. Therefore, we decided to investigate the antibiofilm properties of Humulus lupulus L.-derived compounds (humulone, lupulone and xanthohumol) against a selected group of Staphylococcus spp., including methicillin-susceptible and resistant strains. All tested hop compounds were shown to possess antimicrobial properties against all tested staphylococci, both planktonic and biofilm-dwelling, with no significant difference between resistant and susceptible strains. All compounds lowered the number of bacterial cells released from the biofilm, with the strongest effect seen for lupulone, followed by xanthohumol. Moreover, lupulone and xanthohumol were not only able to penetrate the biofilm and reduce the number of bacteria within it, but their higher concentrations (60 g/mL for xanthohumol and 125 g/mL for lupulone) reduced the number of surviving bacterial cells to zero.

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This randomized, placebo-controlled trial was performed for 8 weeks to investigate the potential effects of astaxanthin (AST) supplementation on the adiponectin concentration, lipid peroxidation, glycemic control, insulin sensitivity, and anthropometric indices in participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus.METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We enrolled 44 participants with type 2 diabetes who met our inclusion criteria. Abstract: Xanthohumol (XN), a prenylated chalcone isolated from the hop plant, has been reported to exhibit multiple biological functions including anti-inflammation. However, the pharmacological function of XN on colitis remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of synthesized XN and molecular mechanism on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis. XN attenuated the colitis symptoms along with the prevention of colonic lesions after DSS challenge. XN inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress and cyclooxygenase-2 expression in DSS-treated mice. Moreover, XN inhibited the phosphorylation of IB, the nuclear translocation of NF-B subunits and the transcriptional activity of NF-Band. In contrast to XN, isoXN showed much less effects on the kinase activity of IKK and IB phosphorylation induced by XN in this study, suggesting that an electrophilic carbon center present in XN is critical for the anti-inflammation in colitis, especially inhibition of IKK/NF-B signaling pathway. Consistently, our docking analysis revealed that XN could bind to the active site, presumably at the Cys99 of IKK. Taken together, these findings demonstrate a new function of XN to inhibit IKK/NF-B signaling, suggesting XN could be the potential therapeutic agent for the prevention of colitis.

To my surprise and delight, a couple of days after my blog post went up, I received a replacement copy in the mail with a friendly note from Jacinda Woodhead. I dont know what pleased me more, the kindness of the gift or the fact that someone on Overlands staff had read my post all the way through. (I realise just now that I didnt write to thank her. Abstract: Natural compounds derived from plants have been an important source of numerous clinically useful anticancer agents. Nevertheless, limited studies indicate that xanthohumol (XN), a major prenylated flavonoid in hop plants (Humulus lupulus), may possess anticarcinogenic properties. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the antitumorigenic effects and the underlying mechanism of XN on breast cancerand. A 4T1 breast tumor mouse model was used in the present study to investigate XN suppression of tumor growth as detected by tumorigenicity assays. In addition,studies revealed that XN significantly decreased cell viability, induced G/Gcell cycle arrest and apoptosis in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, as confirmed by an MTT assay, flow cytometry and western blot analysis, indicating anticarcinogenic activity of XN against breast cancer. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry was performed to confirm the inactivation of the Notch signaling pathway, Notch 1 and Ki-67,; consistently, XN caused decreased activation of the Notch signaling pathway and apoptotic regulators B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-extra large and caspase 3, as determined by western blot analysis. This study suggests that XN may potentially be useful as a chemopreventive agent during breast hyperplasia and carcinogenesis, acting via the regulation of Notch associated apoptotic regulatorsand.

The stigma against napping is finally starting to wane and for good reason. Taking a timeout to sleep during the day does much more than just give us a quick energy boost. It also confers some serious cognitive and health advantages as well. Heres what the latest science tells us.

Regardless, its clear that were not getting enough sleep. Nearly a third of us say were simply not getting enough of it.
Power naps can alleviate our so-called sleep deficits, but they can also boost our brains, including improvements to creative problem solving, verbal memory, perceptual learning, object learning, and statistical learning. What it could be, according to Tracy Slatyer of MIT and her colleagues at Fermilab, Harvard, and MIT, is excess light from colliding dark matter particles. If true, this observation would be the first-ever indirect detection of dark matter in our universe.
Physicists believe that dark matter is made of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which act simultaneously as matter and anti-matter, annihilating each other when they meet. That collision gives birth to normal matter in the form of high-energy photons of gamma-ray light. Currently, we have some of our best eyes, including the Fermi space telescope, pointed toward the Milky Ways centerwhere dark matter should be the densestto search for the results of these collisions.
