Explaining how such an unfit candidate and such a bizarre candidacy succeeded has become a critical concern for journalists and scholars. Through sites like Monkey Cage, Vox, and 538, as well as academic papers, we can watch political scientists in real time try to answer the question, “What the Hell Happened?” (There are already at least two catalogs of answers, here and here, and a couple of college-level Trump syllabi.) Although a substantial answer will not emerge for years, this post is my own morning-after answer to the “WTHH?” question.
I make three arguments: First, Trump’s electoral college victory was a fluke, a small accident with vast implications, but from a social science perspective not very interesting. Second, the deeper task is to understand who w...
The Islamic Military Alliance (IMA), officially Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT), reached the number of 42 countries after Indonesia, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan joined it. Beside those new members, the alliance includes Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Tunisia, Sudan, Egypt and others. According to Saudi Arabia, the alliance is formed to fight the Islamic State and other militant outfits.
The Islamic Military Alliance was proposed in 2005 by former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahatir Muhammad and the Islamic Observers Organization’s spokesperson Fazal Muhammad to Saudi king Abdullah. But after the deteriorating situation of Middle East, especially the influence of Daesh in northwest Iraq, Saudi Arabia has themselves given a practical form to the suggestion. Actually, Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Defense, announced it on 15 December 2015.
General Raheel Sharif, a retired four-star rank army general who served as the 15th Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army from 29 November 2013 till his retirement on 29 November 2016, was appointed the first Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Military Alliance on 6 January 2017. This caused opposed comments because those who favor Saudi Arabia and criticize Iran on the basis of their sectarian bias are seen congratulating the General while those who feel otherwise are clearly expressing their displeasure. Whether this news is really true is still not confirmed officially, except for the Pakistani Defense Minister’s revelation about it in a TV program with a private TV channel. As usual, some people are very excited at the prospects of General Sharif performing some miracles in his new role, while others are skeptical.
The exclusion of Iran, Iraq and Syria from this Islamic Military Alliance is drawing mixed reactions from various quarters.
Most countries have welcomed the initiative, such as United States, Turkey and Germany. Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called it the "best response to those who are trying to associate terror and Islam".
U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said about new alliance: "We look forward to learning more about what Saudi Arabia has in mind in terms of this coalition. But in general it appears it is very much in line with something we've been urging for quite some time, which is greater involvement in the campaign to combat ISIL by Sunni Arab countries.”
Germany's defense minister Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the alliance against terrorism but also stressed that it should be a....

Indian government and law enforcement are allocating increased capital in training police officers to crackdown electronic fraud involving online transactions. A facility was launched in the police headquarters in Kasaba Bawada to ensure police officers obtain necessary information and technical expertise to detect electronic fraud.
Sohali Sharma, superintendent of Police, announced:
“In Kolhapur district, new software and machines have been installed in the cyber lab to help in detection of cyber crime. The cyber lab is set up in the main building of police headquarters in Kasaba Bawada area of city.”
Sharma and the rest of his team at the police headquarters admitted that cyber crime is a new form illegal activity which local police and law enforcement aren’t fully aware of. The vast majority of local police officers are yet to obtain clear understanding of cyber crime and other online illicit activities involving money.
Thus, in the upcoming months, policemen in the newly established cyber lab facility will spend time in analyzing various situations involving fraudulent transactions and implementing practical solutions in a simulation-based environment.
“These types of crimes are new to the police force as well. We are conducting series of training sessions for the officers to get acquainted to different types of crimes and how to investigate these crimes,” Sharma added.
He also further emphasized that local law enforcement agencies will begin imposing serious consequences for cybercrime and fraud. Indian police will also crackdown on money laundering operations conducted by criminals using illegal payment channels to send or receive money in an unregulated ecosystem.
Overtime, Sharma believes changes in training courses and introduction of important cyber lab facilities will increase awareness of cyber crime and financial fraud.
“The online transactions and use of new portals for business transactions through computers or smartphones are new to the people. This may give an opportunity to people involved in cybercrime for cheating people. We agree that police are also not aware of this type of crimes but the situation will change soon. Refresher courses and training sessions to upgrade police force for tackling these crimes have been going on and the situation has improved. We are now taking these types of crimes seriously,” Sharma added.
Sharma’s statements suggest that the Indian law enforcement and police....

In what is being seen as a final act of revenge against Donald Trump’s predilection for watersports, Barack Obama has spent his remaining weeks keeping his family on a high fibre diet and ordering them not to flush the toilet. The White House vegetable garden has been stripped and all of the Obamas are on strict instructions to ‘save it for Donald’. Even family dog Bo has been force fed Brussels sprouts.
Commentators say this is ‘worse than when Jimmy Carter jizzed on Betty Ford’s marijuana plants’, while others have said that Obama is taking his own election slogan ‘Yes we can’ to its natural conclusion. One said: ‘’Taking a colossal shit in the White House, is somehow better than a colossal shit taking the White House’.
“The United States Government has not yet made any official reply to the Soviet and East German allegations and protests concerning the 300-yard tunnel that American intelligence operatives are said to have built underneath the border between West and East Berlin for espionage purposes,” says a Washington Post article from 1956 headlined “The Tunnel of Love.” The Communists’ excitement about their discovery even had them conducting “special propaganda tours through the tunnel and to have exhibited the wiretapping and other recording apparatus that the Americans are supposed to have installed inside it.”
This amusing chapter of Cold War history might have seemed, to America at the time, like the kind of foiled effort — though one of an ingenuity admired on both sides of the Iron Curtain — best buried at the back of the espionage archives. But now, thanks to an executive order requiring the Central Intelligence Agency to release “nonexempt historically valuable records 25 years or older” as well as the dogged efforts of journalist Michael Best, you can read over 12 million pages of previously classified documents at CREST, the CIA Records Search Tool. In addition to the files on the “Berlin Tunnel” operation, it offers copious material on much else, such as vintage espionage techniques like writing with invisible ink and undetectably opening sealed letters and CIA research into spiritualist healing, telepathy, and other psychic powers.

Marriage in the Catholic Church is the "covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring", and which "has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized."
As Spain grows more secular, fewer weddings are performed in church. According to The Olive Press, 22.2 percent in the first half of 2016 is a huge fall from the same period in the year 2000, when 75 percent of couples had a Catholic ceremony.
Barcelona province had the lowest number of Christian ceremonies in mainland Spain, at only 10.5 percent. Malaga saw the least in Andalucia, with 21.6 percent. However, neighbouring Jaen had the highest in the country, at 53 percent.
Alfonso Pérez-Agote, a sociologist, says three main reasons explain the nosedive in Catholic weddings. These are the impact of the economic crisis, which has left 34.4 percent of under 30s unemployed, and a change in cultural views, which means marriage is not seen as important. He added that growing secularization also played a part.
"The young people of today are the children of those disinterested in religion. When they think of getting married, they don’t think of doing so in the church.”
This quote demonstrates that religious belief can be seen as nurture rather than nature. If less religious belief is instilled in the future generation, it will less care about religion.
More than half of Spaniards admit that they are either "not religious" or are "convinced atheists", according to a global study from 2015. Actually, 35 percent said they were “not religious” and 20 percent went even further and declared that they were "convinced atheists".
Roman Catholicism has long been the main religion of Spain, and although it no longer has official status by law, in all public schools in Spain students have to choose either a religion or ethics class. Known as a bastion of Roman Catholicism, Spain was responsible for the Inquisition and the birth of orders including the Dominicans, the Jesuits and Opus Dei, but the religion has been on the wane since the death of Dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975.
The last Pope, Benedict XVI, saw Spain as one of the principal nations ripe for evangelism and he visited the country three times in his eight years as pontiff. But the number of churchgoers has continued to fall.

When I think of the color green, my mind conjures up images of weird or unappetizing things. Slime. Goo. Aliens. A person’s face before they’re about to puke. None of which are the least bit appetizing, nor healthy.
But in the world of food, green is definitely a good thing. Green vegetables, fruits and other weird and wonderful produce symbolizes everything that is nutritious about naturally-grown, unprocessed food. Green foods are often a powerhouse of vitamins, nutrients and minerals, providing our bodies with the nutrients they need to achieve new heights of awesomeness. Without a little green in our lives, we’d be seriously lacking in some important nutritional and genetic building blocks.
And because here at The Alternative Daily we that believe weird is a good thing, here are 13 rather strange green foods that you should be getting more of.

The Lightworkers / Lightwarriors are the Key to the Shift of the Ages / The Event
We were informed by Cobra in March of 2016 that the focused work by the Light Forces of the removal of strangelet and toplet bombs created a very strong reaction from the Chimera group who ordered the Archons to turn up the volume of their technologies to attack and suppress the Lightworkers and Lightwarriors because the Lightworkers / Lightwarriors are the key to the Shift of the Ages.
These attacks on Lightworkers have been ongoing throughout 2016 and many voices tell of recent attacks now in January 2017.
Lightworkers are on a continual search to find balance and moderation in their lives as much as possible. The Tsunami Waves of Love energy that have been steadily increasing over the past three years or so are transmuting everything that is not of love at an ever increasing pace. Each step brings us closer to a greater sense of balance and moderation in our lives on every level. As we release more and more of those ‘vasanas’ = reactions to our environment programmed through survival tactics often in childhood, we grow to be able to express more of the truly loving beings that we each are in our core being. When we have reached a place of greater moderation in whatever challenges we have in life we must strive to keep that moderation and continue to develop balance in our character and a sense of responsibility towards our environment.
Because we Lightworkers of Gaia are targeted by the archons
/ cabal we must accept that until the Net, Web, Veil, Matrix is
removed entirely total harmony is obstructed and impossible and we
must counteract the darkness in every way we can. Protection is
given for the asking by the entire Co of Heaven.

In our haste to get our homes ready, mental preparation is usually pushed far back on the list of priorities. Following a disaster, people experience a variety of reactions, but two emotions they experience the most are fear and panic. Without being mentally prepared for a disaster, many succumb to the traumatic event due to their emotional responses. Inevitably, if you do not mentally prepare your mind for the disaster, fear, distress, shock, indecision, panic will set in and eventually you will give up altogether. I won’t lie to you, this is something that could make or break you in a true disaster and takes lots of training. Folks, mentally preparing yourselves for disasters needs to be a priority.
First things first, here’s the secret to survival – it’s all mental. You want to be the person who is well prepared, understands the situation and is able to react fluidly to the changes that occur. You DON’T want to be the person who mentally breakdown, stresses and emotionally reacts – this is a dangerous person to be.
Be in control of your mind, don’t let your mind control you.
If you can understand how your mind reacts to disasters, you can learn to quiet it, slow the thinking down and learn to make more rational decisions. This puts you in a more adaptable position to survive and get through the disaster.
SEALs training focuses on this very issue. This video explains the brain’s reaction to fear and panic and how to overcome these natural reactions.
Here’s the thing, we all want to avoid getting injured, looted, attacked and left exposed in a dire emergency. These are all fear-based thoughts and although they are a stark reality that some may face, they are also situations that many want to try to avoid thinking about altogether. Stress, fear and anxiety are all considered to be negative and destructive emotions. However,...

Comments by Mayor Quilliam in the Circular Head Chronicle this

Melbourne-based supporters of a Tarkine National Park. The meeting
was in fact organised by the Bob Brown Foundation's Melbourne
office, in support of local campaigns to have the Tarkine declared
a National Park and World Heritage Area. The Bob Brown Foundation
has campaign offices in Burnie, Hobart and Melbourne.
"The Tarkine is an area of outstanding and well-recognised National and World Heritage values. It is a special place to all Australians and, in fact, to a great many people around the globe", said Bob Brown Foundation's Burnie-based Tarkine campaigner Scott Jordan.
"Many people have visited Mayor Quilliam's region as a result of our campaign, supporting jobs and businesses in Circular Head. Understandably, some of those people have joined our campaign as a result of witnessing the Tarkine first hand."
"I don't recall Mayor Quilliam having similar issues with interstate mining companies or their foreign investors."
"Mayor Quilliam's address doesn't give him a greater say on World or National Heritage listing for the Tarkine."

The Bitcoin world has been abuzz the last few days over the much awaited launch of Megaupload 2.0. Very little information on the new platform has been released since the media covered the story last October.
An announcement was expected today (January 20th) as this was the 5 year anniversary of the site being shut down by authorities. Earlier today Kim Dotcom tweeted that there was an “expected hiccup” which was followed up by this …
Mission: Destroy roadblock

— Kim Dotcom (@KimDotcom) January 19, 2017
While the nature of the hold up is unclear, Kim Dotcom is not phased and we expect a formal announcement early next week. What is interesting about this is how the market reacted. The price dropped $15 within 10 minutes of the first tweet indicating the stall. This tells us that the market is clearly paying close attention to the goings on.
And so it should. The original Megaupload had over 200 million users. Kim Dotcom has the list of previous users and has his finger on the trigger to reintroduce this massive group of loyal Megauploaders back on his new platform. Being an internet file sharing site, most of the users are educated, tech savvy people. Could there be a better group of people you would want to be introduced to bitcoin? I don’t think so.
Current estimates on how many people use bitcoin range from 2 to 15 million. If even a small percentage of the 200 million previous users join Megaupload 2.0 this could easily multiply the number of real bitcoin users worldwide.
Optimistically, if the platform is anywhere near as successful as the original Megaupload, network effects and a larger population on the internet could drive many 100’s of millions of new users to site before the end of the year. This coupled with Abra’s recent announcement that their “Uber for money transfers” will be...
Mahbubnagar: About half the people living in Yaapadinne village of Ija mandal in Jogulamaba Gadwal district are suffering from debilitating health problems related to kidney ailments, most of which surfaced in just the past three years. The tiny village, with about 150-200 residents, is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River.
During the past two years, more than 20 people of the village have died due to kidney failure. About 60 people are bed-ridden with advanced renal problems.
Every day someone or the other from the village visits nearby Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh to get dialysis done. Majority of the families of these kidney patients are debt- ridden and some of them have even sold their lands and other properties to pay for the high costs of treatment.
According to Sharada, a kidney patient and MPTC member from Yapadinne village, the renal problems have surfaced only in the past three years. Almost half the population of the village is affected by kidney ailments. “I have been facing this kidney problem for the past two years.
I have to go to Kurnool every week for dialysis. There are more than 60 people like me in the village who are facing the same problem. Those who are economically well-off are approaching private hospitals, while those who are financially weak are bed-ridden, just waiting for their turn to die,” said Sharada.
The kidney ailments in the village can be attributed to the presence of harmful chemicals, fluoride and heavy salts in the ground water, according to healthcare experts.
They say that if the concentration of fluoride is more in water; when consumed, it gets deposited in the kidney during the blood filtering process and later these deposits get precipitated and form into stones, destroying the nephron cells.
Ultimately, the kidney stops functioning. Nalgonda district is notorious for long-neglected fluoride problem that has affected many people in rural areas, leaving them paralysed or with joint pains and bone problems.
What beats the authorities is that the problem in Yapadinne village is somewhat different, considering the fluoride in water has been impacting mainly kidneys.
Although the State government has been making tall claims about providing pure drinking water to every household, the villagers of Yapadinne have always been depending on ground water for their drinking purpose. As the ground water is known to have a high level of fluoride, it has been negatively impacting overall health of people in the entire village.
Narasihma, a farmer from another village near Yapadinne, said he too had been suffering from kidney failure. He got operated, but continued t...

‘Demonstrations don’t normally mar inaugural festivities, but President-elect Donald Trump could join former Presidents Richard Nixon and George W. The National Park Service has credentialed at least 28 protest groups on the National Mall, and is expecting more than 350,000 demonstrators, Politico reported, citing an internal agency spreadsheet. A typical inauguration sees only five or six such requests. Democratic lawmakers, mostly in the House of Representatives, will be boycotting the Trump inauguration, but most demonstrations against the incoming administration will be far more vocal and visible.’ Read more: Protests could steal the show from Trump’s inauguration

The ongoing battle between Bitcoin Unlimited and Bitcoin Core continues. For the first time in a while, Bitcoin unlimited support is outpacing SegWit support. Although this may only be a temporary trend, it goes to show the mining world remains undecided on how Bitcoin should evolve. Retail guru Mary Portas explained ‘the loss of high street shops that men can get sent to while their partners try clothes on has led to them being forced to stand in the shop in the vicinity of the changing room. This in turn has led to a series of unfortunate incidents in several fashion retailers. Instead of heading off to watch the telly in Comet or idly look at the snooker cues in JJB, men have been accused of being Peeping Toms for looking towards the changing room curtains, while others are labelled as perverts for looking the other way, which always happens to be towards the lingerie department.’
Portas believes that he loss of HMV and Jessops is likely to exacerbate the situation, leading to fears of an influx of awkward, embarrassed men impatiently waiting for their partners when they could be looking at CDs or cameras that they won’t be allowed to buy instead.
Linked to this, there are real concerns that men will be asked to contribute to the choice of clothes, leading to an increase in the divorce rate. Questions such as ‘Do you think this makes me look fat?’ must be answered extremely tactfully, and there is no right answer to ‘Which one of these do you prefer?’ Husbands are bein advised to mumble something bland about them both being nice if they are to avoid the inevitable ‘So, what’s wrong with that one?’ or ‘Well that just shows how bad your taste is.’ Staff had to intervene in one case in Basingstoke recently when Mrs Ellie Winter, having tried on several dresses, announced which one she liked best, only to tell husband Peter, ‘I need to look in all the other shops in town, but I’ll bear it in mind.’
In view of these fears, one member of the Chamber of Commerce in Exeter has had an idea to keep men out of fashion stores during their partners’ shopping trips. Based loosely on the principle of a childrens’ creche, his establishment will look after his clients, entertain them and keep them fed and watered until they are collected. He’s calling his idea ‘a pub’.
‘King’s College London is warning staff and students their computer activity could be monitored as part of the British government’s counter-radicalization strategy, Prevent. The prestigious university, home to one of the world’s foremost centers for radicalization studies, published a notice on its email login section warning users that by accessing the page they consented to “monitoring.” Middle East Eye reports the message also cautions users they must not “download, store, or transmit unlawful material, or material that is indecent, offensive, defamatory, threatening, discriminatory or extremist.”’ Read more: London university ‘monitoring’ emails to stop students ‘being drawn into terrorism’
‘The British press are in full hysteria propaganda mode when it comes to demonising our new greatest threat on planet earth; not climate change, a global pandemic, international terrorism, or America’s new foe in the South China Sea – but Russia… …In all of these newspaper reports, and there are plenty more of them, not a single scrap of actual evidence other than hearsay is published. In the case of the Express story, it’s allegations are backed up with the statement “It is entirely feasible that Russia has targeted Tornadoes and Typhoons in this way,” said air defence expert Justin Bronk, of the Royal United Services Institute think-tank.” This is not evidence. In the case of the Telegraph, this fairy-tail has been 100% debunked as pure propaganda and the original report from the Washington Post ended with a full-on apology by its editor. The Telegraph has printed no such amendment or apology for its totally fictitious article.’ Read more: Mainstream British Press Propaganda Ramps Up Dangerous War Rhetoric
Buda City Manager Kenneth Williams announced in a press release Thursday night that the city will place on hold the scheduled fluoridation of its water supply.
At Tuesday’s city council meeting, several members of the public spoke about the issue, including some from newly formed group Buda Citizens for Safe Water, prompting Mayor Todd Ruge to request a public hearing on matter on Feb. 7.
The city council will revisit the issue and make a final decision at some point following that meeting, according to the release. Kenneth could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
Buda had been adding fluoride to its water since 2002 when it first became a customer of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. The authority operates the San Marcos Water Treatment Plant and stopped fluoride treatment after San Marcos residents voted to discontinue the pratice in November 2015.
Buda City Council members passed a resolution in July 2015 cementing their preference to keep the fluoridation regardless, and the city had planned to restart fluoridation this month.

In the video – which is posted below – Puopolo says, “Yes, I’ll be at the review stand at the inauguration and I’m going to kill President-elect Trump. What are you going to do about it, Secret Service?” Then he went on to say he has four children with three wives and that “my other name is the Lord, Jesus Christ. What are you going to do about it? I challenge you. This is not the way. Two birds I’ve been wanting to photograph for a while are the Musk Lorikeet and the Azure Kingfisher. I got to take some photos of both of these in the last week.
The first one was the Musk Lorikeet. I was working at Dutson Downs east of Sale in some woodland when a large and noisy feeding flock of these parrots (possibly up to 200) descended on some Coastal Manna Gums.
First of all, I purposely shortened Lada’s title for this post, as I am not going to send any visible energy into that possibility. However, Lada affirms that there will be a “safe” inauguration for Trump.
I’ve listened to a few other people talk about it, and I can assure you it will be a safe-for-all event. My own view is that he is somehow “overlighted” by a variety of Angelics, and this “overlighting” is for the entire USA country and population., not just for The Donald.
Lada also mentions her upcoming webinar (Feb. 4) where Trump’s presidency will be the topic.
“I am posting this only because there is presently a renewed avalanche of sensationalist ‘predictions’ suggesting that Trump will be assassinated during inauguration tomorrow, On January 20, 2017. There are also some secretly die-hard Hillary and Obama worshipers and not-so-secret neo-liberals, who wish and pray this happens to the US president-elect.
“Donald Trump WILL NOT be assassinated on January 20, 2017. He will take office and become officially the President of the United States.
“Moreover, his presidency will mark a tangible SHIFT in America and worldwide.”
When this guy supported Jeb Bush for the Republican nomination Trump condemned Bush for being ‘in the thrall of big-money interests’. The hypocrisy of Trump’s appointments beggars belief. ‘President-elect Donald Trump appears to have picked NFL tycoon Woody Johnson to be US ambassador to the UK. Mr Trump introduced the New York Jets owner as “the ambassador Woody Johnson, going to Saint James”, during a luncheon in Washington. The 69-year-old billionaire philanthropist and heir of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical giant has known Mr Trump for many years. But he originally backed Trump rival Jeb Bush in the Republican primary.’ Read more: Bush-supporting Johnson and Johnson billionaire (yet another) ‘to be Trump’s UK ambassador’
The National Australia Day Council describes Australia Day as “a day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation,” and a “day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the generations to come”.
But for many January 26 is no date to celebrate, and to fully understand why, we must recognise the price of this “great nation’s” achievements over the past 229 years.
The 26th of January 2017 will mark 229 years since the British invaded what is now known as Australia. It was on this date in 1788 that Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack for the first time in Sydney Cove, symbolising British occupation.
When Australia was invaded, British colonisers declared this continent terra nullius: “nobody’s land”; a law which describes territory that has never been subject to the sovereignty of any state. Terra Nullius was granted despite the land already being occupied by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations for over 60, 000 years.
Despite acts of resistance, Australia was brutally colonised as British settlers stole Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land and enacted massacres through state policy.
The Frontier Wars spanned the first 140 years of colonisation. When the invasion commenced, there were approximately 750,000 people living in 350 distinct nations on the Australian landmass. By 1900, only 93,200 Indigenous people survived. At least twenty thousand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were killed or murdered in untold battles and massacres from Hobart to the Kimberley. Approximately two and half thousand invaders were killed as Aboriginal people resisted extermination.
Throughout the twentieth century, the Australian state continued to dehumanise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and commit acts of genocide under new laws. A policy called ‘Smooth the Dying Pillow’ allowed indiscriminate killings well into the 1930’s under the assumption that what was left of the Aboriginal population would die out....

‘Let’s call this Vicky Nuland’s slap in the face on her way out the door. Washington’s trans-atlantic empire suffered a blow this week when Moldova’s newly elected president, Igor Dodon, announced his country’s re-alignment toward Russia in a joint press conference held with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. What a sad day this must be for the neocons, the transatlanticists, the globalists, the Victoria Nulands and George Soroses of the world. ‘At the end of last year, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution condemning Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The resolution was particularly noteworthy due to the United States taking the unusual decision to abstain on the resolution, allowing it to pass rather than vetoing. But will the new resolution make a difference to the peace process and Israel’s policy of settlement expansion? Since Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has remained clear that settlements are illegal and an obstruction to a peaceful resolution. Here, we take a look back at the history of UNSC resolutions regarding Israeli settlement activity and expansion onto Palestinian land, and see how this has shaped the conflict between Israel-Palestine and plans for peace.’ Read more: Broken promises: A history of UN resolutions and West Bank Settlements
‘Thousands of Palestinians have staged demonstrations across the occupied West Bank in condemnation of US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to fulfill an election campaign promise to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds. Hundreds of demonstrators waved Palestinian flags during a protest in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, situated approximately 49 kilometers north of Jerusalem al-Quds, on Thursday. They also held signs reading, “Al-Quds is the Key to Peace and War,” and, “Moving the American Embassy is a New Balfour Declaration for Palestinians.” Nasser Abu Jaish, a member of the Palestinian People’s Party, said the US embassy relocation would be equal to declaration of war on Palestinians as well as Arab and Muslim nations.’ Read more: Palestinians rally against possible US embassy relocation to al-Quds
‘Fordham University has banned a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine based on the political views of its members. During the year-long application process, students were questioned repeatedly about their personal political views, affiliations with outside human rights and Jewish organizations and their opinions about the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement. Lawyers say that the university has violated civil and free speech rights and has openly discriminated against students of color. All the students who applied for group status are people of color and three are Muslim. The dean, Keith Eldredge, sent the students a letter in late December informing them he had “decided to deny the request to form a club known as Students for Justice in Palestine at Fordham University.”’ Read more: Fordham University prohibits Students for Justice in Palestine
‘Chrystia Freeland, appointed last week to be the new Canadian Foreign Minister, claims that her maternal family were the Ukrainian victims of Russian persecution, who fled their home in 1939, after Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin agreed on a non-aggression pact and the division of Poland between Germany and the Soviet Union. She claims her mother was born in a camp for refugees before finding safe haven in Alberta, Canada. Freeland is lying. The records now being opened by the Polish government in Warsaw reveal that Freeland’s maternal grandfather Michael (Mikhailo) Chomiak was a Nazi collaborator from the beginning to the end of the war. He was given a powerful post, money, home and car by the German Army in Crakow, then the capital of the German administration of the Galician region. His principal job was editor in chief and publisher of a newspaper the Nazis created.’ Read more: Canada’s New Foreign Minister Lying About Family’s Ukrainian Nazi Past

‘British people should learn immigrants’ languages to be more welcoming, according to a Cambridge professor, who says integration is a “two way street.” University of Cambridge French philology and linguistics professor Wendy Ayres-Bennett says although people moving to Britain should learn English, Brits should also get over the idea that learning other languages is “something difficult and only for the intellectual elite.” To help with social integration, Ayres-Bennett said Polish, Punjabi, and Urdu courses should be available to all, “so that there is some mutual effort in understanding the others’ language and culture.” Her comments follow a report lead by Dame Louise Casey and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration, which warned that segregation and social exclusion have now hit “worrying levels” in Britain.’ Read more: Total Insanity: Brits Should Learn Polish, Punjabi, & Urdu To Make Immigrants Feel Welcome – Cambridge Professor
January 20, 2017 = 1 2 1. This is a very significant date in the human journey. (2 is reinforced here because January in a 1 Year is a 2 Month).
These numbers are a stark reflection of our position in the volatile space between one millennium and the next. We are experiencing the vibrational differences between the electrical masculine 1000s and the magnetic feminine 2000s. And the shocks will continue until we finally wake up to the enormity of what is happening.
Today, while 1 signifies speed, action, and the start of something new, 2 slows everything down by drawing attention to important details which must be recognized and dealt with before real progress can be made.
4 is the number of order, foundation, method, system, facts and figures, and effective organization. 4 is the number of effectiveness. However, until we feel its powers of determination and purpose, 4 can create limitation, delay, and the feeling of being boxed-in. 4 teaches us that every problem has its answers and solutions if we are patient enough to find them – and then find the most effective way to put them into practice. 4 represents results through hard work. This confirms that although the road ahead will not be...

‘And there it is, the unvarnished, raw, truth about how everything went wrong for middle class America. Since the Vietnam war, more than 45 years ago, the US has embarked on a neocon strategy of war in an effort to build a global empire. The result of that strategy has left American infrastructure second rate, its school system in shambles, and its healthcare system a complete and utter joke. Aside from the wars, America spends more than 50% of its discretionary budget on the military, per annum, 16% of its overall budget.’ Read more: Alibaba’a Jack Ma Drops a Redpill in Davos: The U.S. Wasted $14 Trillion on Wars Over the Past 30 Years

A fiery nighttime eruption of the Colima, Mexico, volcano shot ash and smoke over 6,500 feet into the air and could be heard 50 miles away, officials said. The eruption Wednesday on the 12,000-foot mountain was the third major eruption this year, although the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Washington, D.C., part of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, gave almost daily accounts of new ash in the atmosphere since Jan. 3, as well as a spectacular eruption on Dec. 27. The mountain, one of 14 active volcanoes in Mexico, is on the country's west coast, between Colima and Jalisco states, 300 miles west of the capital, Mexico City. The center's report of Wednesday's eruption cryptically noted, "Explosion seen on web cam. Based on models, any VA [volcanic ash] would be rapidly mov NE at 40-60 Kts [rapidly moving northeast at 40-50 knots, or 42-69 mph]." Dramatic video of the eruption Wednesday was captured on a webcam located beyond the five-mile "exclusion zone" surrounding the mountain.
Russia's Constitutional Court has ruled that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision to order compensation of over $2 billion to former Yukos shareholders violates the Russian constitution and cannot be executed. "Russia has the right not to fulfill the imposed obligations when this is the only way not to act against the constitution," chairman of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin announced on Thursday. The judge also noted that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had ordered the compensation to be repaid from the Russian state budget - the same budget which had been hugely underfinanced because of the Yukos tax evasion schemes that had eventually led to the company's dissolution. "This contradicts the constitutional principles of equality and fairness," he said. At the same time, the court chairman said that the European system for protection of human rights was of fundamental value, and that it would be best if Russian authorities and the European court found a compromise.
Yesterday, the news broke that the Trump administration will apparently be slashing federal spending, to the tune of $10.5 trillion over 10 years. According to The Hill, the “departments of Commerce and Energy would see major reductions in funding.” And “the Corporation for Public Broadcasting [aka PBS] would be privatized, while the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities would be eliminated entirely.”
Attempts to cut funding for the arts is nothing new. Above, we take you back to 1969, when Richard Nixon planned to reduce PBS’ funding from $20 million to $10 million. That is, until Fred Rogers, the gentle creator of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, spent six short minutes before Senator John Pastore, the chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications, and made his pitch for publicly-funded educational television. In those 360 seconds, Rogers gets the gruff senator to do a complete 180 – to end up saying “It looks like you just earned the 20 million dollars.”
It’s unlikely that Mr. Rogers could get the same traction today. Quite the contrary, his sweetness and sincerity would likely be mocked quite mercilessly, a sign of how coarse our society has become these days.

I USED to think that excess weight was caused by eating too much and/or not exercising enough. “There was no-one overweight on the Burma Railway,” I’d quip. Not any more.
When over-weight people said, “It’s my metabolism” or “I am big-boned” I would dismiss it as an excuse for gluttony and laziness.
Not any more.
The myth that obesity is caused by over-eating, especially a diet high in fats, is one perpetuated by the sugar industry and the “research” that the sugar industry has funded over the decades.
The sugar industry also perpetuated the myths that obesity causes diabetes; that diets high in saturated fats, high cholesterol and over-eating generally causes heart disease; and that excess salt causes hyper-tension (high blood pressure).
Anything, in short, to steer attention away from the real cause of these four maladies – sugar.
And the nutrition scientists let it happen.
For the past 40 years, people have been deluded into thinking that low-fat diets would reduce obesity and therefore diabetes and heart disease, when all along the enemy was highly refined carbohydrates, especially sugar.
They have allowed people to believe that only calories matter and that if you eat more calories than you expend in exercise you will get fat.
I have just finished reading “The Case Against Sugar” by Gary Taubes, perhaps the most important book of 2016. It should be compulsory reading for our new Health Minister.
Taubes points to the explosion in diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart disease and cancer that comes with the western diet and presents the facts and argument that show how everything has been blamed but the real culprit – refined sugar.
Indigenous populations had non-existent rates of the cluster of western diseases despite many of them having very high-saturated-fat diets – the Inuit, the people on the Tokelau atolls and American Indians are examples.
Then came sugar and western diseases. They got fat despite many having high-exercise laboring jobs. The people who emigrated from Tokelau to New Zealand and who were closely monitored got Western diseases while those who remained in Tokelau on a high-fat but no-sugar diet of unprocessed pork and coconut did not, at least until their diet changed to one of processed food and high sugar later in the 20th century.
Cancer in the indigenous populations was also almost non-existent, until they took up high-sugar diets, but the link is harder to show, though the role of insulin in feeding cancer cells is becomin...
Synthetic chemicals commonly found in insecticides and garden products bind to the receptors that govern our biological clocks, University at Buffalo researchers have found. The research suggests that exposure to these insecticides adversely affects melatonin receptor signaling, creating a higher risk for metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
Published online on Dec. 27 in Chemical Research in Toxicology, the research combined a big data approach, using computer modeling on millions of chemicals, with standard wet-laboratory experiments. It was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health.
Disruptions in human circadian rhythms are known to put people at higher risk for diabetes and other metabolic diseases but the mechanism involved is not well-understood.

Scientists simulate evolution in the lab by introducing mutations iteratively into biomolecules such as nucleic acids and selecting for desired properties. When carrying this process out specifically on RNA molecules, they can evolve the RNAs to bind specific small molecules. But many of these so-called aptamers don’t bind well to their targets when put inside cells because they don’t fold into stable structures.
“As we solved the structures of naturally occurring aptamers, we noticed they had much more complex secondary and tertiary structures” than versions made in the lab, says Robert T. Batey of the University of Colorado, Boulder. “So we decided to use these naturally occurring RNA folds as starting points” for producing more stable artificial aptamers.
To prove their concept, Batey and coworkers used RNA sequences from naturally occurring ribozymes and riboswitches as scaffolds to evolve aptamers that bind amino acids and other small molecules used to make neurotransmitters (Nat. Chem. Biol. 2017, DOI: 10.1038/nchembio.2278). The resulting aptamers are selective for these precursor molecules over structurally similar amino acids and the neurotransmitters themselves.
The graphene temporary tattoo seen here is the thinnest epidermal electronic device ever and according to the University of Texas at Austin researchers who developed it, the device can take some medical measurements as accurately as bulky wearable sensors like EKG monitors. From IEEE Spectrum:
Graphene’s conformity to the skin might be what enables the high-quality measurements. Air gaps between the skin and the relatively large, rigid electrodes used in conventional medical devices degrade these instruments’ signal quality. Newer sensors that stick to the skin and stretch and wrinkle with it have fewer airgaps, but because they’re still a few micrometers thick, and use gold electrodes hundreds of nanometers thick, they can lose contact with the skin when it wrinkles. The graphene in the Texas researchers’ device is 0.3-nm thick. Most of the tattoo’s bulk comes from the 463-nm-thick polymer support.
The next step is to add an antenna to the design so that signals can be beamed off the device to a phone or computer, says (electrical engineer Deji) Akinwande.
A simple technique for producing oxide nanowires directly from bulk materials could dramatically lower the cost of producing the one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures.
That could open the door for a broad range of uses in lightweight structural composites, advanced sensors, electronic devices – and thermally-stable and strong battery membranes able to withstand temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius.
The technique uses a solvent reaction with a bimetallic alloy – in which one of the metals is reactive – to form bundles of nanowires (nanofibers) upon reactive metal dissolution.

Back in June, China debuted the world’s fastest supercomputer, the Sunway TaihuLight (pictured), with a Linpack benchmark result of 93 petaflop/s. That machine contains 40,960 locally developed ShenWei processors, each with 260 cores and roughly comparable with Intel’s Knight’s Landing Xeon Phi CPU. China also developed a 136GB/sec memory controller and custom interconnect that delivers 16GB/sec of peak bandwidth between nodes.
Now China is working on a prototype exascale (1,000-petaflop) system that it aims to complete by the end of this year, according to state media. An exascale computer is capable of a quintillion calculations per second, and could deliver vast dividends in deep learning and big data across a variety of disciplines as varied as nuclear test research, code breaking, and weather forecasting.
“A complete computing system of the exascale supercomputer and its applications can only be expected in 2020, and will be 200 times more powerful than the country’s first petaflop computer Tianhe-1, recognized as the world’s fastest in 2010,” said Zhang Ting, an application engineer at Tianjin’s National Super Computer Center, to Xinhua news agency (via AFP).

‘A recent study published on the journal Public Library of Science One, links aluminum as a contributing factor to the decline of bumblebees. There has been much debate on what is causing the rapid loss of the insect species, from pesticides to pollution… …So where is the aluminum coming from? One cause could be from geoengineering experiments. A short time ago, military whistle-bower Kristen Meghan came forward and exposed aluminum barium as an ingredient in weather modification. Air, soil and water all tested positive for Aluminum Barium, Strontium Oxide and Sulfates.’ Read more: Is Geoengineering The Cause Of High Levels Of Aluminum In Bumblebees?

While most eyes are turned to Washington and the impending inauguration of Donald Trump as the next President of the USA, there has been another geopolitical earthquake (well, in fact, several). This one is in the Middle East, but portends even bigger developments:
‘“Psychiatry has been almost completely bought out by the drug companies…We’re so busy with drugs that you can’t find a nickel being spent on [non-drug] research.” – Dr Loren Mosher Psychiatrist Loren Mosher (who earned medical degrees from both Harvard and Stanford) was the highly esteemed founder of the experimental Soteria Project, which was subtitled “Community Alternatives for the Treatment of Schizophrenia” from 1971 to 1983. The Soteria Project proved that patients with first-onset psychotic breaks could be successfully treated – even cured – outside insane asylums by non-professional caregivers, in unlocked neighborhood facilities and without the coercive use of neurotoxic, dependency-inducing and dementia-inducing drugs.’ Read more: The Tragic Story Of Dr Loren Mosher’s Soteria Project And The Plot To Kill It
Wieso braucht Firefox eigentlich so lange?
And this is why we cannot have nice things.
Update: Man muss auch dazusagen, dass dieser Patch jetzt nicht so dramatisch aussieht. Das eigentliche Problem ist also vermutlich ein Folgefehler von dieser Zeile.

Over the last several decades, the Northern Sub-Saharan African region has been hit by a number of severe droughts and the associated societal impacts, such as food shortages that result in deaths of both people and livestock. The Sahel zone, an area of semi-arid land just south of the Sahara Desert that stretches across the entire width of the continent, has suffered a large number of these droughts. There are a number of potential causes of African droughts, some natural and some manmade. Past studies on the factors that influence droughts in the Sahel have tended to focus on land–atmosphere interactions and the influence of sea surface temperatures, such as the effects of the periodic temperature shift in the Atlantic Ocean known as the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation. Among the human activities that can drive drought conditions is overgrazing, which reduces the moist vegetation covering the soil, thereby impacting the soil’s ability to retain moisture. Moist soil is capable of contributing water vapor to the atmosphere and helping generate rainfall. In other words, replacing that moist soil with drier desert soil diminishes the overall capacity for rain in the region. Another manmade contributor to Sahel droughts is the burning of biomass. Though the possible causal relationship between biomass burning and decreased rainfall in the Sahel has received little scrutiny, a study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters last September sheds some light on the relationship between the two. “We wanted to look at the general impacts of burning on the…

WASHINGTON – The 45th President of the United States and subject of a Green Day concept album already being written was inaugurated to the highest office in the land earlier today amidst fanfare and protest.
In a divisive ceremony, Donald J. Trump — who will likely be referred to as “Bishop Dan” or some shit on Green Day’s inevitable record about him — spoke about the need to “bring America together and unify as a country.” Despite rampant protests, the controversial businessman, whose ties to Russia will no doubt be represented in upcoming Green Day lyrics about “suicide comrades” or whatever, called the day a “huge success.”
That is the topic of my latest Bloomberg column, here is one excerpt:
One of the biggest objections to recent globalization is that it extended international trade at a destabilizing pace. Whether or not you agree with this negative assessment, from 1950 to 2008, international trade grew about three times faster than global gross domestic product. Since then, cross-country trade has grown much more slowly, at about the pace of global GDP growth or perhaps slower. For better or worse, that is a significant deceleration.
Elites didn’t just decide trade growth had to be slowed down. Rather, the initial rapid growth had some self-reversing properties built in. For instance, China’s growth and exports slowed down as the economy matured and wages rose, trade-intensive Europe became a smaller percentage of the global economy, and protectionist nontariff pressures have recently been rising.
The wisdom behind globalization isn’t a belief that it will be steered by very wise elites. Rather, most economic processes show elements of convergence, stability and mean-reversion, without anyone planning them.
I’m not saying that all is well, as I see significant possibilities for instability in the current political configuration. But the elites have in fact been working at their job, and now it is up to voters to catch up in their understanding.
Do read the whole thing.
‘The adverse event-deniers who insist that vaccines are 100 percent safe and never cause any problems in children clearly missed a little-known 1991 study published by the United States Government. This paper reveals a clear link between the popular Tdap vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough), and microcephaly, a neurological birth defect that in recent years authorities have been erroneously blaming on the Zika virus. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) offered up clear evidence at the time showing that the combination jab can cause not only brain damage in young children, but also heart problems, meningitis, and epilepsy. Epidemiological evidence from human case studies showed that within weeks or even days of getting the Tdap shot, children developed infantile spasms and other common symptoms of microcephaly directly related to the vaccine.’ Read more: Government document confirms vaccine link to microcephaly
Sinn Fein, consummate news managers that they are, announced their massive U-turn on the form of inquiry needed for the RHI scandal little more than an hour after the media had recorded Martin McGuinness’s farewell interview. January 20, 2017 — Researchers have developed a high-resolution, interactive anatomic brain-mapping atlas they say can overcome the limitations of functional MRI (fMRI) and expand the modality’s value to conventional MR brain imaging and standard MRI applications.
The Gibby-Cvetko atlas is designed to segment the brain into finite anatomic regions with a resolution of 1 mm or less to correct for variations in the brain sizes of patients and better delineate the location of cortical structures and skull morphology.
“Having a high-resolution, interactive, quantitative brain atlas that we warp to fit the patient and run inside a PACS improves accuracy and speed of reading fMRI studies,” said co-developer Dr. Wendell Gibby, an adjunct professor of radiology at the University of California, San Diego. “It is a big step toward routine utilization of fMRI in clinical practice.”
It was when we tried virtual reality (VR) for the first time that we realized our method of controlling computers is likely to change. When you realize your VR headset is acting as a pointer in virtual reality, and you begin using your head like a mouse without even thinking about it, you start to grasp that there are much easier ways to control computers. Take foveated rendering (eye tracking) as an example. Soon computers will know exactly where you are looking – blink twice for double click!
Last November 2016, we posted an article, “Brain Implants that Augment the Human Brain Using AI” where we talked about exploring the hippocampus to solve brain disorders associated with memory loss. Much work has been done by Dr. Theodore W. Berger into neurobiological issues related to the hippocampus, primarily around implants to explore signal processing of hippocampal neurons. As it turns out, the hippocampus is the storage for our short-term memory working much like the RAM does in your computer. This is the motivation behind Bryan Johnson’s $100 million investment into his brain augmentation startup Kernel.
A Brain Computer Interface (BCI) or Brain Machine Interface (BMI) has numerous definitions, but the common elements found among all the definitions are as follows:
‘An Indiana Senate bill would require public officials to immediately dispatch “all available law enforcement” to clear a traffic blockade involving at least 10 people “by any means necessary.” Opponents call it the “block traffic and you die” bill. Earlier this month, Republican Indiana state Senator Jim Tomes filed Senate Bill 285, which targets “a protest, riot, or other assembly” of at least 10 people that “unlawfully” blocks vehicle traffic. “A responsible public official shall, not later than 15 minutes after learning of a mass traffic obstruction in the official’s jurisdiction, dispatch all available law enforcement officers to the mass traffic obstruction with directions to use any means necessary to clear the roads of the persons unlawfully obstructing vehicular traffic,” the legislation’s text reads.’ Read more: ‘Any means necessary’: Indiana proposal seeks to chill protest

Most premature deaths in Mumbai and Delhi over two decades were caused by stroke (a medical condition that occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off), due to inhalation of ultrafine suspended particles, revealed a study by the Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IITB).
The three-member IITB team attributed 35.3% premature deaths to cerebrovascular disease – arteries supplying blood to the brain is affected – as a result of being exposed to high levels of particulate matter of size less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) between 1991 and 2015. Additionally, premature deaths due to ischemic heart disease (it falls under the group of cardiovascular diseases) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) stood at 33.3% and 22.9% during the same period.
A dangerous pollutant, PM2.5 can lodge deep into the lungs and cardiovascular system, giving rise to a host of problems from damage to lung tissue, sneezing, asthma attacks, migraines, headaches to even cancer and heart attacks. The elderly, children, and those with chronic lung disease, influenza, or asthma, are especially sensitive to the effects of PM2.5.
It underscores the fact that not all minds that wander are lost. University of British Columbia philosopher Evan Thompson, author of Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy, says the DMN’s mental meanderings are “the baseline state of you as a cognitive system.” It’s tremendously pragmatic: being able to remember the past, plan for the future, and happen upon creative insights are all essential tools for navigating life. While he was hesitant to mix the word “suffering,” which is so loaded in ancient Asian religious traditions, with the “default mode,” which is of a contemporary neural vintage, the two connect in the way that suffering arises when people concretize the fleeting swirls of thought, especially around conceptions of self. Still, he says, there’s “particular kind of stickiness” that can come when DMN activity grows overly self-centered.
Default-mode content involves an image of self, one that’s easy to become attached to. These self-conceptions are “affectively charged,” he says; they carry lots of emotional weight. “We constantly think that it’s not just another thought, that [the image of self] is something real, not just an mental image.”
