Underground guerrilla Bristol street stencil spray paint artist Banksy may be suffering from early-onset dementia, due to inhaling too many paint aerosol fumes over the years. The legendary street artist, who paints gigantic political cartoons on buildings or sprays his views and witty comments wherever he likes, was reportedly admitted to a care home by his parents, who were fed up with him living at home and wanted to let out the spare room.
Hes got millions in his account, but still refuses to pay us a bit of rent so we can make ends meet, said Mr Banksy senior, a graffiti art remover for Bristol Council. Now weve painted the walls white and got a lovely top-end mattress in for our first tenant, a nice young lady called Tracey Emin. Our only rules are: no vodka, wine, cigarettes, pissing, shitting, vomiting or used tampons in the bed, but, just to be on the safe side. we have fitted a mattress protector.

Heres a short and sweet 1-minute video by photographer Serge Ramelli containing some great tips for photographing fireworks.
Useful for the upcoming July 4th celebrations, Ramellis tips will help to take your firework photos from amateur snaps to professional prowess.
First off, make sure to set an aperture of about f/7.1. This gives enough sharpness across the scene, as well as allowing you to slow down your shutter. Couple this with an ISO of 100, and then youre able to hit the 4 second shutter speed which is perfect for fireworks.
Make sure to turn off any vibration reduction, or your cameras long exposure noise reduction setting inside the menu. This is an important step, as it can soften your images in such situations.
Tight, up-close crops of the scene look really effective. Rather than capturing the entire spectacle from far away, zoom in and focus on the details. This way you can capture more isolated dramatic shapes and colors.
Making way for a parallel medical system based on the principles of natural health

Has Big Pharma had its heyday? We think so. Its an industry borne out of a business model thats more or less dependent on patented, new-to-nature compounds. The pipelines drying up and the dire consequences of taking products required to be different in form and function from those to which our bodies have adapted over millions of years are increasingly recognised by the public. The publics also waking up to the fact that these side effects arent a necessity of healthcare per se theyre a by-product of Big Pharmas business model.
Its broken, fix it
A glance at Big Pharmas top selling drugs, such as oncologics (anti-cancer), antidiabetics, pain, autoimmune diseases, anti-hypertensives, mental health and lipid regulators (for heart disease), shows most drugs dont do what they say on the tin. Back in 2003, the late Dr Allen Roses, then vice-president of genetics at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) told a shocked London meeting of health experts, researchers and journalists that, The vast majority of drugs more than 90 per cent only work in 30 or 50 per cent of the people. The journal BMJ Clinical Evidence has since evaluated around 3000 medical treatments and currently finds that only 11% have been proven to be of benefit to patients. And thats before you consider that properly prescribed drugs are one of the leading causes of preventable death.
Tentacles and revolving doors
Perhaps we shouldnt be surprised, given the well-exposed revolving door between the drug companies and government regulators. Contrary to the publics expectations and medical establishment fanfares over drugs having been confirmed as efficacious through elaborate and costly randomised controlled trials or RCTs this is far from always the case.
The drug companies, over the last half century or so, have influenced medical training and continue to regard family physicians and general practitioners (GPs), the first line of contact with the public, as sales reps for their businesses. These docs are skilled at drug prescribing, but theyre less skilled at knowing which of the multitude of factors in a patients life need changing to help them manage or recover from their chronic disease of choice. Those who have the required knowledge often lack the time to do justice to such multi-factorial, non-pharmaceutical approaches that are the domain of naturopathic, functional, lifestyle and traditio...
That is exactly what we need.
At ANH, we argue that contemporary healthcare systems would be a whole lot less broken if they werent so burdened by a range of chronic and degenerative conditions that would be much more effectively dealt with outside the existing hospital/medical/pharma-controlled system.
That means building a system for effective, non-pharma-based self-care. To do that, you need freedom in health choice, therapeutic foods and supplements widely available, and a liberal regime of health claims so people can know whats good for them. Some people will also need guidance on their health journey, not by a doctor who simply prescribes drugs, but by a suitably qualified and experienced doctor or health professional conversant in personalized lifestyle medicine.
The main features of this parallel system already exist. The new system is akin to the latest breed of electric or hydrogen-powered cars, that most of us already accept will, in the not-too-distant-future, replace vehicles powered by the outdated, inefficient and unsustainable internal combustion engine.
The current industrial players, be they oil or pharma companies, are desperately trying to cling to the status quo from which theyve profited hugely over the last few decades. But they now need to either adapt or move aside because the business model theyve relied on has become redundant.
We propose that its just a matter of time before the current model of Big Pharma becomes extinct. This process, we submit, is assured by natures immense power, its tendency for self-preservation and its insatiable desire to maintain equilibrium.

INTERFERENCE: Any obstruction that impedes or is burdensome.
Have you had any interference in your life? or in your work? We at PrepareForChange.net have had more than our fair share in fact, we have been down-right messed with sometimes. Ill give you the short list:
People, internet, web-site not responding, statistics dropping off (every day), other people, negative comments, web-site down, links that dont work (after theyre fixed), statistics keep changing, dropping members, shills, microphones not working, pages disappear, banks cancel accounts, meet-ups cancelled, I.T. people dont show up, etc. etc. Crazy that we still keep going.
The saddest interference is when well meaning people join www.prepareforchange.net and volunteer to help and then . . . . interference happens. Pretty soon they try to bring in their agenda, or take over and sometimes they might bad mouth us or Cobra. Maybe they are part of the paid shills hired to infiltrate and cause chaos. Maybe they dont know how the negative parasites combined with the scalar wave technology can cause a lapse in judgment and they become negative. We recently had a volunteer taking our volunteer lists and started using those lists for their own agenda. We are sorry for this.
We at www.prepareforchange.net are still standing and putting one foot ahead of the other. The dark forces are targeting us sometimes but we will hold our line. That line is educating the population about the past and current affairs of our planet, the true history of our Universe and the upcoming EVENT. We also host and expand some of the Cobra interviews and library his intel. We will get through this last negative stronghold. You will too.

Bad news from Burma (aka Myanmar): after a hopeful period of more freedom, cartoonists are now facing increasing censorship. The Democratic Voice of Burma (a non-profit Burmese media organization) reports that defamation cases have spiked since Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy came to power in 2016:
All of them have been filed using article 66(d) of the 2013 Telecommunications Act, a broadly worded law that allows individuals to be prosecuted for extorting, coercing, restraining wrongfully, defaming, disturbing, causing undue influence or threatening any person over a telecommunications network.
It is quite complicated. So I seldom draw cartoons these days, said Maung Maung Phaung Tain, [a cartoonist] who draws for several local media outlets.
So far the cases have been limited to mostly civilian critics, who find themselves the target of a lawsuit after writing something negative about a member of the current administration. But journalists and those in the media profession have also been targeted. The law carries a maximum punishment of three years in prison and a fine.

Work by Katherine Baldocchi in the second issue of RESIST! (all photos by the author for Hyperallergic)
Its been just over five months since the release of the comics newspaper RESIST! during the womens marches protesting the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States. Over this time, the devastating reality of the Trump administrations impact on human rights, the environment, immigration policies, arts funding, foreign relations, and countless other issues has become clearer. Despite immediate calls for a second volume of RESIST!, editors Franoise Mouly and her daughter Nadja Spiegelman took some time to let the weight of current events sink in before deciding the moment had come. This is reflected in the second issues more intimate format as a bound periodical, rather than a folded newspaper. At 96 pages, its meant to be digested slowly, read in sequence and multiple times. The contents remain as wide-ranging as before, the artists as diverse in skill level, age, and geography. Readers of the first issue will recognize the names of some previous contributors including Roz Chast, Kristen Radtke, Sohpia Zarders, and Gayle Kabaker alongside artists who are publishing for the first time. The second issue, which is available for preorder now and will be distributed for free in stores on July 4, is more reflective about the state of the US and American values, as well as the potential of grassroots publishing and the power of printed images.
I video-chatted with Mouly, located in New York, and Spiegelman, who lives in Paris, to discuss their decision to continue what was originally intended as a one-off publication. We talked about the making and format of RESIST!, the politics of comics, and, surp...

Researchers at New York University (NYU) developed a simulated training experience for primary care residents to learn more about the unique health needs of transgender patients. Findings, published in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, highlight training outcomes and the value in learning through transgender community partnerships.

Qualitative feedback from learners indicated that even those who had baseline knowledge of the basics of care for transgender patients found that the opportunity to interact with a patient in a low-stakes setting increased learners comfort during future real-world encounters.
Richard Greene and his team of researchers call attention to commonly reported experiences of transgender patients who confront discrimination and substandard care when seeking medical services. Some propose that these blunders are a result of providers lacking adequate knowledge, training, and experience. The intervention designed by Greene and colleagues seeks to address this directly by providing a simulated experience in which residents interact with a transgender patient.
The team hired transgender actors who presented as women with high blood pressure and high blood potassium, and who were interested in undergoing an orchiectomy, the surgical removal of one or both testicles. In this case, the patient was presented as taking medication to treat high blood pressure, and estradiol, a form of estrogen.
After meeting with the patient, the primary care residents were tasked with developing a treatment plan for managing her high blood pressure and high blood potassium in a way that was collaborative and respectful to her values surrounding hormone treatment. Following the training, they were asked to complete a survey assessing their preparedness, perceived performance, and challenges.
The transgender actor and a faculty member also rated and provided feedback on the performance of each of the 23 resi...

The new ranked-choice system of voting will stay in effect statewide until at least the next legislative session in January after two legislative efforts to kill it off failed on Wednesday. This short video off the Fair Vote website explains how ranked-choice works. [insert] According to Kyle Bailey, a spokesman for the Ranked-Choice Voting Committee which worked to pass the ballot measure last fall: Last November, Maine people approved ranked-choice voting with the second largest vote in Maine history and today the Legislature did not stand in the way of implementing the will of the people. In an advisory opinion, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court found that the law are unconstitutional insofar as it applies to the governors race and seats in the state legislature, ok for the Maines state primary elections and Congressional seats. It would take a 2/3rds vote of the legislature to overturn the measure, so if nothing is done, the primaries in June of next year will be using the ranked-choice system. Some lawmakers said on Wednesday that they may attempt to have a court block the implementation of the law, which will anger Maines voters. The Australian Bureau of Statistics decided to move no religion to the top of the list on the Census which is in line with international practice and consistent with it being the second highest response to the religion question. The change in the questions position maybe had a small effect on the final result but the important thing is that Australian citizens chose no religion more than any listed specific denomination on the nations 2016 Census. This census is conducted every five years.
The first full results from the census show that for the first time in Australias history the number of people who claim no religion has overtaken Catholics. The no religion category includes atheist, secularists, and those who are agnostic. Since 1966, when the proportion of the population who marked no religion on their census was just 0.8%, the number that now mark no religion has swelled to 29.6%, nearly doubles the 16% recorded in 2001. On the other hand, those identifying as Catholic dropped from 25.3 per cent to 22.6 per cent.
Christians still make up 52% of population but that number is much lower than the 88% in 1966 and 74% in 1991. Islam and Buddhism were the next most common religion reported with 2.6 and 2.4 per cent respectively. Islam grew from 2.2 per cent in 2011, overtaking Buddhism (which dropped from 2.5 per cent) to become the most popular non-Christian religion. The religion question was controversial this year, with Australians warned not to mark no religion on the Census survey by those afraid the nation would become a Muslim country.
The Atheist Foundation of Australia president Kylie Sturgess said that it was time to take religion out of politics because political, business and cultural leaders needed to listen to the non-religious when it came to public policy thats based on evidence, not religious beliefs. This includes policy on abortion, marriage equality, voluntary euthanasia, religious education in state schools and anything else where religious beliefs hold undue influence, she said.
In terms of age, young adults aged 18-34 were more likely to be affiliated with religions other than Christianity (12 per cent) and to report not having a religion (39 per cent) than other adult age groups. Older age groups, particularly those aged 65 years and over, were more likely to report Christianity.

Two molecular biologists have withdrawn two 2015 papers published in the same journal, citing image duplication and manipulation, among other issues. One notice published in June explains that, after further investigation, the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC) found certain experiments were not performed appropriately. The other notice cites missing data and notes that

A prominent survivor of clerical sex abuse has resigned from a special Vatican commission that was created by Pope Francis to tackle the problem, saying the churchs most senior clerics continue to put other concerns before the safety of children and vulnerable adults. Marie Collins, who was molested by a priest when she was 13 years old, said in a written statement she had made a final decision to resign after she learned that a Vatican department was failing to comply with a basic new recommendation that all correspondence from victims and survivors should receive a response. I learned in a letter from this particular [congregation] last month that they are refusing to do so, Collins wrote in a searing statement to the National Catholic Reporter. I find it impossible to listen to public statements about the deep concern in the church for the care of those whose lives have been blighted by abuse, yet to watch privately as a congregation in the Vatican refuses to even acknowledge their letters. She added: It is a reflection of how this whole abuse crisis in the church has been handled: with fine words in public and contrary actions behind closed doors. Collinss decision to leave the commission comes one year after the only other abuse survivor who was appointed to the commission, Peter Saunders, was forced to take a leave of absence after he complained the commission was doing far too little to tackle abuse.

Australias senior Roman Catholic prelate, and one of Pope Francis top advisers, has been charged with sexual assault, the police in the Australian state of Victoria said on Thursday. The prelate, Cardinal George Pell, became the highest-ranking Vatican official in recent years to face criminal charges involving accusations of sexual offenses. The case will test the credibility of Francis initiatives to foster greater accountability after abuse scandals that have shaken the church around the world. Cardinal Pell, the Vaticans de facto finance chief, had been accused in hearings before Australias Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse of mishandling misconduct cases against clergy members while he served as the leader of the Archdioceses of Melbourne and Sydney. Then allegations surfaced that he had sexually abused minors himself beginning early in his priesthood and continuing until he became archbishop of Melbourne. In recent decades, more than 50 Roman Catholic bishops worldwide have been accused of sexually abusing children, according to BishopAccountability.org, an advocacy group ... that documents sexual abuse in the church. Few, however, have faced criminal charges. It is rare for a cardinal, a prince of the church, to be accused of sexual abuse, though one of the most notorious cases involved Cardinal Hans Hermann Gror of Vienna, who resigned in 1995 over accusations that were deemed credible by his successor.

Glyphosate, an herbicide and the active ingredient in Monsanto Co's popular Roundup weed killer, will be added to California's list of chemicals known to cause cancer effective July 7, the state's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said on Monday. Monsanto vowed to continue its legal fight against the designation, required under a state law known as Proposition 65. The listing is the latest legal setback for the seeds and chemicals company, which has faced increasing litigation over glyphosate since the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is "probably carcinogenic" in a controversial ruling in 2015. Dicamba, a weed killer designed for use with Monsanto's next generation of biotech crops, is [also] under scrutiny in Arkansas after the state's plant board voted last week to ban the chemical. OEHHA said the designation of glyphosate ... will proceed following an unsuccessful attempt by Monsanto to block the listing in trial court. Listing glyphosate as a known carcinogen ... would require companies selling the chemical in the state to add warning labels to packaging. Monsanto and other glyphosate producers would have roughly a year from the listing date to re-label products or remove them from store shelves if further legal challenges are lost.
Note: The negative health impacts of Monsanto's Roundup are well known. Major lawsuits are building over Monsanto's lies to regulators and the public about the safety of glyphosate. CNN accepted the resignations Monday of three journalists involved in a retracted story about a supposed investigation into a pre-inaugural meeting between an associate of President Donald Trump and the head of a Russian investment fund. The story was posted on the network's website on Thursday and was removed, with all links disabled, Friday night. CNN immediately apologized to Anthony Scaramucci, the Trump transition team member who was reported to be involved in the meeting. The story had been quickly questioned both internally and externally, including by the conservative site Breitbart News. It was determined that the story was posted without going through the expected checks and balances for a story of such sensitivity, the executive said. The failure to follow proper procedures is what led to the resignations, the CNN executive said. It's not immediately clear what in the story is factually incorrect, or whether CNN will continue to report on the issue. The retracted story had said the Senate investigations committee was looking into a January 16 discussion between Scaramucci and Kirill Dmitriev, whose Russian Direct Investment Fund guides investments by U.S. entities in Russia. Scaramucci, in the story, said he exchanged pleasantries in a restaurant with Dmitriev. The report also said that two Democratic senators wanted to know whether Scaramucci had indicated in the meeting whether sanctions against Russia would be lifted, a decision that could impact the investment fund.

The extraordinary destruction of a Syrian fighter jet by a US aircraft on Sunday has precious little to do with the Syrian planes target in the desert near Rasafa but much to do with the advance of the Syrian army close to the American-backed Kurdish forces along the Euphrates. The American strike on Monday was ... a warning to the Syrians to stay away from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces the facade-name for large numbers of Kurds and a few Arab fighters since they are now very close to each other in the desert. But the Syrian military are still winning against Isis and its fellow militias with Russian and Hezbollah help, of course although comparatively few Iranians are involved. The US has been grossly exaggerating the size of the Iranian forces in Syria, perhaps because this fits in with Saudi and American nightmares of Iranian expansion. So who is fighting Isis? And who is not fighting Isis? The Syrian army, supported by the Russians, is fighting Isis. But what is America doing attacking first Assads air base near Homs, then the regimes allies near Al-Tanf and now one of Assads fighter jets? It seems that Washington is now keener to strike at Assad and his Iranian supporters inside Syria than it is to destroy Isis. That would be following Saudi Arabias policy. If we are to believe all the Americans now say, they want to destroy Isis but are quite prepared to go on attacking the Syrian government forces that are fighting Isis. Does Washington want simply to break up Syria and leave it as a failed state?
The United States is stumbling into another decade of war in the greater Middle East. And this next decade of conflict might prove to be even more destabilizing than the last one. In the fight against the Islamic State, U.S. forces have been aggressively initiating attacks, resulting in a sharp rise in civilian deaths in Iraq and Syria. And in a dramatic escalation, this week the United States shot down a Syrian warplane, putting Washington on a collision course with Syrias ally, Russia. Worse yet, it is unclear how this belligerence toward the Bashar al-Assad regime will achieve the sole stated mission of the United States involvement in Syria: to defeat the Islamic State. In Afghanistan, Trump has delegated the details of a mini-surge of 4,000 more troops to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. The United States has been in Afghanistan for 16 years. And yet, Mattis acknowledges that the United States is not winning. What will an additional 4,000 troops now achieve that 130,000 troops could not? In Yemen, the United States is more actively engaged in a conflict that does little to advance the fight against radical Islamist terrorism. Washington is further fueling Saudi Arabias proxy war against Iran - a war that has led the kingdom into a de facto alliance with al-Qaeda in Yemen. In almost every situation that U.S. forces are involved in, the solutions are more political than military. After 16 years of continuous warfare ... somebody in Washington needs to ask - before the next bombing or deployment: What is going on?

Hundreds of men swept up in the hunt for al-Qaida militants have disappeared into a secret network of prisons in southern Yemen where abuse is routine and torture extreme - including the "grill," in which the victim is tied to a spit like a roast and spun in a circle of fire, an Associated Press investigation has found. Senior American defense officials acknowledged Wednesday that U.S. forces have been involved in interrogations of detainees in Yemen but denied any participation in or knowledge of human rights abuses. Interrogating detainees who have been abused could violate international law, which prohibits complicity in torture. The secret prisons are inside military bases, ports, an airport, private villas and even a nightclub. Some detainees have been flown to an Emirati base across the Red Sea in Eritrea, according to Yemen Interior Minister Hussein Arab and others. Several U.S. defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the topic, told AP that American forces do participate in interrogations of detainees at locations in Yemen, provide questions for others to ask, and receive transcripts of interrogations from Emirati allies. They said U.S. senior military leaders were aware of allegations of torture at the prisons in Yemen, looked into them, but were satisfied that there had not been any abuse when U.S. forces were present. Inside war-torn Yemen, however ... nearly 2,000 men have disappeared into the clandestine prisons, a number so high that it has triggered near-weekly protests.
Note: Saudi Arabia's military campaign in Yemen has strong US military support, and flagrantly violates international law. For more along these lines, see concise summaries of deeply revealing military corruption news articles from reliable major media sources.
Crippling deficits and a nightmarish national debt are popular, recurring tropes in American politics. Politicians and the pundit class ... complain that America is running out of money when it comes to helping the poor, people of color, the disabled and the elderly. Their worries miraculously disappear whenever the military wants to start a new war. A recent editorial in the Washington Post [alleged] that single payer in the U.S. is simply unaffordable. Yet in the past 20 years of editorials on U.S. wars - every one of which the paper has supported - the Post has never framed the issue of bombing and occupying as one of cost. Most glaringly, its 2003 editorials in support of invading Iraq never mentioned dollars and cents, even though that war ended up costing the U.S. more than $2 trillion. In the presidential debates, billionaire Pete Petersons pro-Social Security privatization group, the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, was mentioned twice by the moderators ... in the context of deficits and the alleged impending insolvency of Social Security. Yet none of the 178 mentions of Russia, 71 mentions of Syria, or 67 mentions of Iran had anything to do with costs to the U.S. Treasury. An estimated 44,000 Americans die a year because they dont have access to healthcare, whereas youre more likely to die taking a bath than at the hands of a terrorist. Why is spending on the latter existential and beyond cost-cutting, but working urgently to address the former a budget-buster we cant afford?
Note: Despite reports of massive budgetary mismanagement, the Pentagon has never been audited. Could it be that the real reason the Pentagon is the only branch of US government that doesn't balance its books is that they don't want us to know where the money is going? Twice in the past month, National Security Agency cyberweapons stolen from its arsenal have been turned against two very different partners of the United States ' Britain and Ukraine. The N.S.A. has [not acknowledged] its role in developing the weapons. White House officials have deflected many questions ... by arguing that the focus should be on the attackers themselves, not the manufacturer of their weapons. The silence is wearing thin for victims of the assaults, as a series of escalating attacks using N.S.A. cyberweapons have hit hospitals, a nuclear site and American businesses. There is growing concern that United States intelligence agencies have rushed to create digital weapons that they cannot keep safe from adversaries or disable once they fall into the wrong hands. On Wednesday, the calls for the agency to address its role in the latest attacks grew louder. Representative Ted Lieu ... who serves on the House Judiciary and Foreign Affairs Committees, urged the N.S.A. to help stop the attacks and to stop hoarding knowledge of the computer vulnerabilities upon which these weapons rely. Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft, said outright that the National Security Agency was the source of the vulnerabilities now wreaking havoc. For the American spy agency ... what is unfolding across the world amounts to a digital nightmare. It was as if the Air Force lost some of its most sophisticated missiles and discovered an adversary was launching them against American allies ' yet refused to respond, or even to acknowledge that the missiles were built for American use.

In North Carolina, a person cannot withdraw consent for sex once intercourse is taking place. Because of a 1979 state supreme court ruling that has never been overturned, continuing to have sex with someone who consented then backed out isnt considered to be rape. The North Carolina law is an example of how the US legal system has not always kept pace with evolving ideas about rape, sex and consent. Just last year, an Oklahoma court ruled that the states forcible sodomy statute did not criminalize oral sex with a victim who is completely unconscious. The toughest charge available to prosecutors was unwanted touching. But the North Carolina law appears to be unique. And it has shocked even those who are used to dealing with such legalistic vagaries. Its absurd, said John Wilkinson, a former prosecutor and an adviser to AEquitas, a group which helps law enforcement pursue cases of sexual violence. I dont think you could find anyone today to agree with this notion that you cannot withdraw consent. People have the right to control their own bodies. If sex is painful, or for whatever reason, they have the right to change their mind. The ruling has devastated victims and frustrated prosecutors in North Carolina for years. State senator Jeff Jackson ... has introduced legislation to amend the law. North Carolina is the only state in the country where no doesnt really mean no, he said in a statement. We have a clear ethical obligation to fix this obvious defect in our rape law.
Note: A local North Carolina newspaper, the Fayetteville Observer, drew widespread attention to this bizarre law by reporting on a case of sexual abuse involving US military personnel. The Justice Department is investigating allegations that officers of a special Venezuelan anti-drug unit funded by the CIA smuggled more than 2,000 pounds of cocaine into the United States with the knowledge of CIA officials despite protests by the Drug Enforcement Administration. That is a huge amount of cocaine. But it was hardly a first for the CIA. The agency has never been above using individuals or organizations with known links to drug trafficking if it thought they could help it further its national security mission. In Costa Rica, when the war against Nicaragua's Sandinista government was at its peak and cocaine was beginning to pour into the United States, the DEA attach wanted to place cameras at clandestine airstrips from which he suspected drugs were being flown to the United States. The CIA resident gave him a list of airstrips on which he was not to place cameras. They were the strips into which the CIA was flying arms for the contras. Some were also strips from which the DEA agent suspected drugs were being flown to the United States. Shortly after the kidnapping and brutal murder of the DEA's Enrique Camarena in Mexico, Francis Mullen, the DEA administrator, was taken by the CIA station chief in Mexico City to Mexico's director of federal security, a man who, the station chief confided, was a CIA asset. The gentleman ... denied any knowledge of the affair. He was lying. A DEA investigation revealed that he had been connected ... to the murder. CIA ties to international drug trafficking date to the Korean War.
Note: The above was written by Larry Collins, author of the book, "Black Eagles," which deals with the CIA, cocaine traffic and Central America in the mid-'80s. Read the account of Mike Levine, a 25-year veteran of the DEA who personally witnessed large-scale drug smuggling by the government. An Instagram account seeks to counter misconceptions about people and countries in Africa by sharing gorgeous photos of everyday life on the continent. Everyday Africa, which started five years ago and now has about 340,000 followers, regularly publishes pictures from more than 30 photographers, most of whom are African themselves. Their work reflects a range of experiences on the continent: kids playing in a pool, young women taking selfies, people selling food at a street market. The project, largely directed at an American audience, aims to use photography to upend stereotypes about Africa namely that it is mainly a region of war, poverty and safaris and instead celebrate its rich diversity. The way news functions is to focus on the extremes often its the very negative, co-founder Peter DiCampo [said]. The war and poverty parts are certainly present, but theres so much else. The project just released a book. Since 2013, DiCampo and others have visited more than 2,500 students in classrooms, mainly in Chicago and Washington, D.C., to teach kids about the Everyday Africa project and stereotypes in the media. Teachers then use their curriculum free to the public over several weeks to teach students about media and photography, and to have students do their own everyday projects. Everyday Africa is just one of many efforts ... to push back against stereotypes of the continent. The Twitter hashtag #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou ... also sought to break [these] stereotypes.

[Dave] Rauch worked for 31 years at Trader Joes, the last 14 as a president. He helped grow the small retail chain in California into a grocery store with a national presence. He retired in 2008. But Rauch wasnt really ready to call it quits. He started growing another food store Daily Table, located in a low-income neighborhood of Boston. I failed retirement, says Rauch, his eyes crinkling when he smiles. Since it opened two years ago, Daily Table has been a pioneer in its approach to food waste, food deserts, hunger, and obesity. Its a nonprofit grocery store, selling healthy food at bargain prices. The food that Daily Table sells is excess food either donated by various organizations or bought at steep discounts from big-name companies looking to unload items that are close to their expiration dates. The items are resold at a fraction of retail prices and yes, they still havent reached their expiration dates. Daily Table looks like a Trader Joes. [The store is filled with] stacks of organic cereal, produce piled high on display tables, and in a refrigerated section, precooked meals and fresh salads made on-site. As many as 49 million Americans are food insecure, says Rauch, citing a common statistic. The data have frustrated him. Were one of the richest nations in the history of food production, he says. It just seemed so incongruous to me. To get excess healthy food into the hands of those in need, Rauch searched for inefficiencies in the system. He found them and channeled what he learned into Daily Table.

Mike Miles hadnt had a stable job in years. This wasnt due to a poor work ethic. Because Miles had a criminal record, he was always cut loose when it came time to let staff go. It was like walking on eggshells. You just never knew when youd be gone, he recounted. After his release from prison in 2007, Miles struggled to find stability. It wasnt until October 2015 ... that a cousin told Miles about Lancaster Food Company, a local business that ... focuses on hiring formerly incarcerated people. Miles submitted an application. He got an interview. And, soon after that, he began a new job, encompassing everything from food production to maintenance, not to mention a livable wage of $15 an hour. He says its the best job hes ever had. Miles scenario is rare in Lancaster, where the poverty rate holds steady at 30 percent. This figure riled Charlie Crystle, Lancasters co-founder and CEO. He believes that food production is a key way to meet people where they are, referring to former offenders who may lack a high school or college degree. Lancaster produces products like bread and maple syrup, all of it USDA certified organic. Crystle says he wants to inspire other companies and entrepreneurs to rethink their current practices and ignite conversations around minimum wage and employment opportunities for everyone, including ex-offenders. Not one employee has quit. According to Mike Miles, having a steady job has given him new courage.

On Friday 27th November 2015, REI did a remarkable thing. It closed the doors of all 143 of its retail stores, its headquarters and its two distribution centres. On this day, REI paid every one of its 12,000 employees to #OptOutside to enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family and invited all its customers and the entire American nation to join them. The most astonishing fact about the #OptOutside store closure was that it took place on Black Friday: the biggest shopping day of the year. Turning its back on millions of dollars worth of sales, REI went ... against a cardinal rule of traditional business. Instead of cashing in on a one-day opportunity for inflated profits, it chose to act in a way that would best support its purpose that of inspiring, educating and outfitting its members and the community for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship. Heres how Jerry Stritzke, REIs president and CEO, explained the decision: As a member-owned co-op, our definition of success goes beyond money. We think that Black Friday has gotten out of hand and so we are choosing to invest in helping people get outside with loved ones this holiday season, over spending it in the aisles. It was a risk for sure, but the payoff has been sensational. More than 1.4 million people responded to REIs invitation to #OptOutside, and 175 organisations companies as well as non-profits joined the movement. It was a response that showed not just tremendous levels of engagement, but engagement of the highest order.

Did Jay cheat on Bey? He certainly seems to confirm Lemonades cheating allegations on his own new album, 4:44. If thats true, its a big deal for the couple and their marriage. But for the rest of us, Jay-Zs rapping about the couples experience with infertility is arguably more significant not because their experience is unique, but because of who they are. When Jay and Bey speak, their words echo across continents.
Over the last few years, this power couple has repeatedly spoken out about the pain of infertility, dragging the issue out of the shadows and onto their very public platform. In doing so, Jay and Bey help others on fertility journeys know theyre not alone. For those facing setbacks on the road to building a family, that in itself is meaningful.
Theres growing awareness that its important to create space to speak about infertility, but that doesnt mean its easy or particularly common. In fact, when couples are in the midst of their struggles, its more typical to keep mum.
As Second Lady Karen Pence remarked during our interview earlier this year, Well, you know, its easy for me to sit here and say, Oh, yes, Ill be interviewed about infertility, because it was many years ago, and I have three healthy, grown children now. But at the time, Ive got to tell you, we didnt tell anybody. We didnt tell anybody we were struggling.
When people do open up, its more often women who speak. Its not that men are unaffected by infertility quite the contrary, both biologically and emotionally speaking but as with many emotionally charged topics, women are frequently more comfortable sharing details about the pain. So, it is certainly notable to hear a fathers perspective, especially since Jay is not speaking to one or two close friends. Because of who Jay and his wife are, this story will be shared widely.
Previously, Jay-Z commemorated the life lost before Blue Ivys birth with a mention in his song Glory. But here, after the recent birth of the couples twins, Jay offers more details about the couples painful, personal experiences.
For many women, the decision to go on birth control is a normal part of womanhood. At well-woman checks and appointments after a babys birth doctors say its time to talk about birth control, and the general assumption is that youll use birth control until its the perfect time to have exactly as many kids as you want.
Birth control, especially the Pill, is interwoven with womens health care, and access and funding for contraception has featured heavily in recent years with the debates on insurance policies and coverage. A new study has introduced a troubling concern for a medication so ubiquitous in most Western womens lives, finding that the Pill might be putting women at significantly higher risk for breast cancers.
Its hard to find a family in America that hasnt been affected by breast cancer. Its the most common cancer for women in the USA, and the rates of diagnosis are staggering. This year, more than 250,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and tens of thousands more will be diagnosed with non-invasive breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women. This makes the information in the new study particularly concerning.
Combining data from 12 previous studies looking at the health histories of American and European women from 19 to 40 years old, researchers from the University of Michigan discovered that some types of hormonal birth control increase womens progestin levels fourfold. In addition, ethinyl estradiol, an artificial estrogen strongly correlated to breast cancer, was increased by 40 percent in women who use some forms of the Pill.
These two hormones work together normally to control a womans menstrual cycle and fertility. The synthetic versions are used in hormonal birth control to alter the normal monthly changes in a womans body to prevent pregnancy. Advocates of hormonal birth control frequently insist the risks of birth control are less than the risks of pregnancy for women.

Iaw, one of the last members of the dwindling Av Canoeiro tribe, has died from cancer aged about 56 years. His death means just eight Av Canoeiro remain in his small family group.
Iaw, his wife Tuia, her mother Matcha, and her aunt Naquatcha, were contacted by FUNAI, Brazils Indian affairs department, in 1983 as a huge hydroelectric dam was set to drown the Indians hilly refuge, the Serra de Mesa.
The government eventually designated a territory for the Av Canoeiro in 1996.
The tiny group had survived a massacre in 1962 and for two decades sought refuge in caves hidden high up in the mountains.
Incredibly, this group of Av Canoeiro live only five hours drive from Brazils capital, Braslia
At night they would come down to raid settlers gardens for food. Otherwise they survived by catching small mammals like rats and bats. This precarious existence meant the women had no children during this time.
Since contact, Iaw and Tuia had a son and daughter, Trumak and Putdjawa.
Putdjawa married a Tapirape Indian and the couple have three young children.
Iaws death last month will be an enormous blow to the group as he was noted for his humor, his courage in defying contact for so long, and for helping his family to survive many massacres.
The Av Caneiro are the last remnants of a proud and strong tribe which has been on the run since 1780. For decades they fiercely resisted the white colonists who systematically hunted them down as more and more Indian land was stolen.
Another small group of Av Canoeiro were contacted in 1973. They now live in a neighbouring state and share a territory with other tribes.
Derek Thompson, a 62-year-old train announcer employed by Southern Rail, has died from what coroners are describing as heartache. Thompson may well have said the word sorry over a million times during his career.
When he said sorry he meant it, said co-worker, Terry Dodds. Were warned about this during training. One of the first rules of being a train announcer is not to get involved with the commuter, or actually give a shit when apologising or using the word sorry. You tell the commuter youre sorry in a robotic voice, then move on.
Luckily, I find it hilarious telling people that their train has been delayed, said another announcer. But poor old Derek, I caught him in tears once after hed announced the 12.27 from Charing Cross to Brighton would be delayed by 20 minutes. The guy was inconsolable.
Southern Rail have put out a statement to Thompsons family saying they were sorry, while also apologising for any inconvenience that may have been caused.
Theres a danger for musicians in covering well-known songs from famous artists. The obvious problem: one can fail to meet the challenge and deliver a substandard performance of a beloved classic, almost a criminal act in the estimation of die-hard fans. But its too tempting not to try. Musicians, like writers and other artists, learn best by mimicking the greats, then take what theyve learned and develop their own style. Some of the best covers of popular songs are those that transpose them into a different key, style, tempo, or another genre entirely. Make it your own! as they say. Still a risky move... especially when it comes to the Beatles.
There are indeed many phenomenal Beatles coverssuch as Bad Brains live take on Day Tripper (for me anyway)that rival the originals. Some others... not so much. But when a Beatles cover is really good, and I mean really, really good... its usually a pro who pulls it off. So hats off to David Brookings, an able non-famous musician and Beatles superfan who set himself the gargantuan task of covering 209 Beatles songs in 209 days. Are all his cover versions gems? No, but the bar is set so high that its an impossible expectation, especially given the constraints. Brookings isnt re-inventing the pop genius wheel. Hes having fun with Beatles songs, accompanied by an acoustic guitar, a keyboard, a friendsinging Yokos parts in the silly The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, aboveor his wife Shelby, as in Please Please Me, below....
With their home video production values, Brookings covers dont rise far above the wealth of other such efforts that flood YouTube, many of which are highly admirable in their own way. But what sets his project apartbeyond its ambitious scopeis his occasionally tren...
Meet Gillian, seven years old from the south coast of Victoria.
We stumbled on this little legend a week before her very first trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Excited and in awe at what she was about to see at this World Heritage listed natural wonder, we just had to capture her unscripted passion and share it with the world. Because, while she can still experience many parts of the Great Barrier Reef in all their glory today, if we dont act now it could disappear in her lifetime so her children cant.
Our Reef is in grave danger. This amazing ecosystem, home to 9000 species and 10,000 years old, is under serious threat from global warming mainly due to the burning of coal. Back-to-back bleaching has left half of corals dead after just two years due to rapidly rising ocean temperatures, caused by climate change. We must act now to halt carbon pollution and reduce temperatures if our Reef is to survive. If not, it could vanish in our childrens lifetimes.
The Great Barrier Reef can recover but the window is closing fast. Time is critical, so were calling on the Australian government to take firm climate action and stop Adanis giant Carmichael mine now. Were also asking UNESCOs World Heritage Committee for help as the damage done to our Great Barrier Reef is a symbol of whats happening to coral reefs around the world.

Aldrin: To infinity and beyond! (laughter)
Trump: This is infinity here. It could be infinity. We dont really dont know. But it could be. It has to be something, but it could be infinity, right?

This week is the one year anniversary of my wife and I purchasing a home in North Brainerd and moving our family from a suburban 5-acre lot to the middle of town. I knew this would be a great move and it has not disappointed. It's been twelve months of fantastic and my only frustration is that we weren't able to pull it off sooner.
There is one thing, however, that has been a source of tension and it has to do with parking. We have a half-alley (it has a dead end) where there are two parking spots although, when we both use them, it makes getting in and out a challenge. We also have lots of on-street parking, and by lots I mean hardly anyone parks on the street. The street rarely has any cars at all parked along it.
I like parking in the street. Someone in my household who will remain unnamed does not like me parking on the street but prefers I park in the alley. I've been told it is a matter of aesthetics.
At first I assumed -- incorrectly -- that the problem was with my vehicle. I drive a 2004 Honda Element. It is orange in color. It has 280,000 miles, a couple mild dents and a cracked windshield. An unnamed person in my family has called it a "clown car" among other things. To have such a vehicle parked in front of our house perhaps sends the wrong signal to some people tuned into that type of thing. I thought that might be the problem, but no.
Yesterday in Brainerd was the annual Arts in the Park. I really love it -- we used to drive in to go to it -- and now we can just walk over. It's only a block and a half away. We were even having extended family come over for lunch and they were all going to head over there too. For timing reasons we went to church on the other side of town and so as we're getting home from mass, reality sets in.
The streets are no longer empty. There is no longer a pair of parking spaces right in front of our house. And now the block is -- according to the person who shall not be named -- a lot uglier.
For me -- and I'm a simple man in this setting -- it was rather nice to see the streets in my neighborhood lined with cars. The cars provide a barricade between the speeding vehicles and the sidewalk where today lots more people than just me and my family were walking. Also, the lack of wide open space has a calming effect on traffic. Not only does a wall of steel protect me while I walk, but the cars that threaten are forced to...
Bitcoins use in illicit activities in India continues after kidnappers and a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme fall to police.
POLICE have charged a man after a police pursuit through Woonona, Bulli and Bellambi overnight.
About 10.25pm on Sunday, police were patrolling Hillcrest Avenue, Woonona, when they attempted to stop a white Holden Commodore for a breath test.
The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued from Woonona to Bulli, before the Holden Commodore collided with a marked police vehicle.
The pursuit continued through Bellambi, before it was terminated due to safety concerns.
Acting on information, police went to Popes Road, Woonona, and arrested a 27-year-old man.
A search of the premises allegedly found methamphetamine and cannabis and the Holden Commodore, believed to be involved in the pursuit. The drugs were seized and will undergo forensic analysis.
The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing, before being taken to Wollongong Police Station. He was charged with driving while disqualified, breaching bail and dangerous driving, including failing to stop for police, common assault, and stealing relating to another incident.

From Alternet: The pharmaceutical industry has played a major role in causing the opioid crisis by downplaying the potentially addictive and fatal effects of narcotic pain medication. Now, taxpayers will be required to pay for prevention and treatment of opioid abuse; instead, the pharmaceutical industry should be held financially responsible.
Once upon a time, narcotics were limited to post-surgery, post-accident and cancer pain because they are addictive. But cagey Pharma marketers, assuming that both younger doctors and patients had forgotten why narcotics were so heavily restricted, spun the lie that the narcotics were not addictive per sethat addiction boiled down to the individual person. Right. They began marketing narcotics for everyday pain and the result is the opioid and heroin crisis we have now.
When Big Tobacco was busted for a similar schemelying to consumers that its products were neither addictive or deadlyit was forced to pay $206 billion in the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. Provisions include paying states, in perpetuity, for some of the medical costs of people with smoking-related illnesses. Why are taxpayers paying for the similar, Pharma-caused scourge?
From the Los Angeles Review of Books: In recent years, liberalism has begun to serve the function of the superego. Like the superego, liberals have taken on the role of maintaining the status quo and social order, attempting to suppress both the far left and the far right.
If liberalism has ceased to function as a political faction so much as a censorious regency for capital, then there is little difference, in its view, between left and right both are id-ish impulses that must be suppressed. The language of irresponsibility and childishness is not just a messaging contrivance but an explicit statement of core values: the trouble with all of these radical politics is that they want to pull society up by the root and the root, as any adult knows, must be kept firmly in place. The fact that the right receives a larger share of liberalisms disdain is not a reflection of a larger distaste but simply of the fact that the right happens to be winning. That it might be winning because managerial liberalism has hamstrung progressive impulses is an unthinkable idea, dutifully suppressed.
From Undark Magazine: A new app, Psych Ward Reviews, gathers anonymous reviews of patients experiences with inpatient treatment at public and private psychiatric and general hospitals. According to patient advocates, this service is badly needed, as patients experiences with the mental health system have long been ignored by professionals and policymakers.
Unfortunately, inpatient psychiatric units appear to be faltering in both safety and developing a patient-centered orientation of care, wrote Kathleen R. Delaney, professor at the department of community, systems and mental health nursing at Rush University, in a research paper on measuring patient and staff satisfaction.
One reason for this lag may be that some medical professionals are hesitant to trust the opinions of patients with mental illness. Theres the idea that patients dont have insight, or dont know what they need, said Morgan Shields, who has researched quality of care at psychiatric inpatient facilities with Rosenthal and is a Rappaport Public Policy Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Because of the nature of their condition, theres a distrust in their opinions, she added.

PITTSBURGH Local Dungeon Master Tyler Ferrell, being free to imagine worlds wherein literally anything is possible, has designed a fantasy realm that features his parents respecting him as a person.
One part had this underground castle ruled by a dragon who speaks telepathically, but only through song. I was like this is the most mindblowing thing ever, said Laura Roth, one of Ferrells friends and a player in his D&D campaign. Then our party walked into a room featuring Tylers parents congratulating him on completing a creative writing degree in only six years. I had never seen anything like it.
According to Ferrell, his trick for making such intricately creative settings is to use his real life as inspiration.
For this particular campaign, I wanted to keep it grounded by having my real-life parents live in my real-life house in one of the villages my players came across, said Ferrell in an interview. That base layer of reality makes it so much easier to get away with the absolutely bonkers fantasy shit like talking animals or me not being present in the house even though thats where I still live in real life.

When Ferrell isnt crafting stunningly complicated civilizations for his role playing games, hes hanging out at the local Starbucks working on what he describes as his masterpiece, a science fiction adventure novel.
I read a copy of the first draft and it was brilliant but I felt like a lot of the sci-fi elements were way over my head, said Roth. It takes place in this spectacular alternate universe where everything is exactly the same exc...
SAN FRANCISCO A confused stoner participated in a sleep-study program last week, despite falsely believing the nocturnal testing session would actually be a thoughtful dissection of the doom-metal band Sleeps seminal album Dopesmoker, according to research reports.
29-year-old Tyler Harrison reportedly noticed a flyer for the study posted outside of a nearby GameStop, and was immediately intrigued.
Sleep is one of my favorite bands, bro, so I was all like, $50 to fucking groove? Hell yeah! Im in, said Harrison from his sleep-study chamber. The flyer looked hella official, so I figured there might be some CIA level bud involved maybe some of that G13 stuff, or some dank Funyon Dust Kush.
Harrison was initially disappointed when he realized he misunderstood, but changed his tune after learning about the studys perks.
These beds are insane. They have clean sheets, and arent just mattresses laying on the floor. I feel like the King of England, man, said Harrison. Plus, they give me endless saltine sleeves. I just slaughter them, yo.
The scientists conducting the survey at the CPMC Research Institute were reportedly fascinated by their cooperative new subject.
Weve never seen someone sleep like this. He was breathing the whole time, but there was literally no brain activity for the vast majority of the study, said Dr. Lisa Chen. He would always kind of smirk every 12 hours at 4:20, but even then, there were no visible brain waves.
As the 48-hour program concluded, Harrison expressed interest in participating again.
Im kinda between living situations and jobs right now, so Im actually gonna see if cant work something out full-time with the doctors here. Ive been sleeping for free my entire life, and now, I can get paid for something Im really good at, said Harrison. Id even be happy just moving my futon into one of the maintenance closets.
Harrison is allegedly also signing up for a battery of clinical trials.
I feel like Im in some sort of fairy land. First, they pay me to sleep. Now, Im goi...

Minister must Give Directive to Stop Illegal Logging of Purple Spotted Gudgeon Habitat
The North East Forest Alliance has once again asked the Minister
for Fisheries to intervene to make the Forestry Corporation comply
with its Fisheries Licence and immediately stop illegal logging of
headwater stream buffers in habitat of the Endangered Purple
The Forestry Corporation's June logging lists state that they are currently logging buffers on headwater streams in 20 compartments that qualify as habitat of this endangered fish.
"We recognise that the Forestry Corporation have been forced to stop logging of stream buffers in 37 of the compartments that we identified two months ago, but they are continuing to log stream buffers in 5 compartments in Styx River State Forest, and have commenced logging of stream buffers in 15 additional compartments in Bril Bril, Broken Bago, Burrawan, Landsdowne, Riamukka and Chichester State Forests that constitute Purple Spotted Gudgeon habitat that weren't on their March logging lists" NEFA spokesperson Dailan Pugh said.
"It is absurd that when we identify one area where they are illegally logging that they stop there and start doing it somewhere else.

Dhaka: In a landmark verdict today, Bangladeshs Supreme Court declared void a 2014 constitutional amendment empowering parliament to impeach apex court judges, a ruling which the government said could undermine the sovereign parliaments authority.
By unanimous decision the (government) appeal is dismissed, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha pronounced as a seven-member apex court bench unanimously upheld a previous high court judgment calling the 16th amendment to the constitution illegal.
He said the seven-member apex court bench dismissed the appeal with some findings after hearing the arguments for and against the government appeal against the High Court decision for over 11 days.
The verdict came amid a visible conflict between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasinas ruling Awami League government and the Supreme Court over the apex court jurisdiction in disciplining lower judiciary judges.
Attorney general Mahbebey Alam expressed his frustration over the judgment fearing it could undermine the sovereign parliaments authority but said he could take steps to seek its review by the apex court itself on consultation with the government.
Several lawyers said the verdict would aut...
Credible evidence indicates that Special Air Service troops executed unarmed civilians during night raids in Afghanistan and doctored after-action reports to shift blame onto their Afghan partners, the Times claims, citing military and defense sources. The series of killings allegedly took place during the final stages of Britains involvement in the Afghan war, the Times reported, citing a major Royal Military Police (RMP) investigation codenamed Operation Northmoor. Part of the RMP inquiry is said to have focused on a specific SAS squadron dubbed a rogue unit. Sources with detailed knowledge concerning the investigation said there is strong evidence that unarmed Afghan civilians suspected of being Taliban militants were executed during night raids on their homes. As many as two persons died and another went missing from various locations of Kaski district, following flood and landslide triggered by continuous rainfall since Saturday night. The deceased have been identified as Shova Paudel (33), wife of Hari Paudel, a permanent resident of Lamachaur in Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolitan City-19 and Tanka Chhetri (14) of Galyang Municipality in Syangja. Paudel was swept away by the landslide on Sunday Morning at around 4:00 am in Lamachaur. China has strongly condemned a recent move by a United States warship to sail near one of its islands in the disputed South China Sea, describing the move as a provocation. The USS Stethem, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island, part of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, a US Defense Department official said, media reported on Sunday. China said in response that it had sent its navy battle ships and fighter jets to confront the potential threat. Chinas Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said the US warship had made an unauthorized entry into the countrys territorial waters. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang described the US move as a serious political and military provocation. China strongly urges the US side to immediately stop this kind of provocative action, which seriously violates Chinas sovereignty and puts at risk Chinas security, Lu said.
