People Who Say Happy Friday Get Less Sex, Research Shows "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

happy friday

Your colleagues who say Happy Friday at the end of the working week are probably not getting any, an encouraging new study has found.

The extensive research showed that there was a strong link between using the phrase and getting absolutely no sex.

Lead researcher Felicity Vernon said the results were not surprising, but they had to check anyway. It started out as a funny little thing to say at the end of the week, didnt it? But its now just fucking annoying, she confirmed.

Fire destroys home and business of Raven and Stephanie Grimassi "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. On June 27 a fire broke out at the home of Raven and Stephanie Grimassi. According to the fire marshal, the blaze was caused by a lightening strike during a thunderstorm. Raven Grimassi is best known as an author of books on Wicca, Stregheria, Witchcraft, and Paganism. He and his wife operate the store Ravens Loft, out their home.

A fundraiser has been set up to help the couple recover from the fire.

[Courtesy Photo]

Mr. Grimassi says he and his wife were home during the storm when they heard a loud crack of thunder. Mr. Grimassi checked the home, including the third floor, to see if there was any damage. Finding none, he went back to working on his next book, and his wife went grocery shopping. A short time later there was a loud pounding on his door.

I opened the door and my neighbor was there, yelling that my house was on fire, Grimassi explained. I stepped out and looked up towards the third floor and could see the flames.

Mr. Grimassi says the fire department was there within minutes. The third floor was completely destroyed by the fire, while the other floors were destroyed by water.

The couples temple room was located in that space. In sifting through the room after the fire, the couple found the God and Goddess altar statues completely unharmed. Likewise, the plaque with the symbol of their Tradition and another Goddess statue were also undamaged. Everything else in the room was destroyed.

These are wonderful affirmations of our Tradition. There are so many stories connected with fire that speak of magic and how we were protected by the powers that be.

Mr. Grimassi says it will take six months to a year to rebuild their home. Although it was insured, Mr. Grimassi says the loss of his home is the loss of his business, Because we work out of our home, we wont have any income until we can get our store running again. That means we have no money coming in to pay our mortgage or any of our bills.

To help the couple financially until they are able to find a place to live and re-establish their home based store, author Christopher Penczak and Steve Kenton have started a...

Going Backstage with a Theaters Ghosts "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Scene from Ghost Light by Third Rail Projects; pictured: Jessy Smith (photo by Julieta Cervantes)

My first encounter with the apparitions in Ghost Light, the new immersive production from Third Rail Projects, was with a Pierrot-like clown in a hallway, somewhere above the stage. Are you from London?, she asked our small group, which had been split from the larger audience entering the Claire Tow Theater at Lincoln Center. She mentioned a British ghost thats seen every night walking through the single electric light left on the stage the ghost light performing a speech for the empty seats, which would only be filled at the conclusion of the show. For most of Ghost Light takes place behind-the-scenes of the theater, in dressing rooms and stairwells, as phantoms of the theater cycle through their loops, each marooned from some closed production. A 1940s starlet struts below the proscenium in a glittery gown, rehearsing her lines; a 1930s theater usher has a solo in a backstage light; a 1970s janitor reveals his cabinet of candles and crucifixes ready for exorcising these spirits, not realizing he died in a ladder fall decades ago.

Going back to 2010 when I visited the Steampunk Haunted House, which had a silly name but was a beautifully crafted experience, Ive been impressed with Third Rails ability to take their audiences on unexpected, site-specific journeys. Their ongoing Then She Fell in Brooklyn is based on Alices Adventures in Wonderland, its encounters with the White Rabbit and Red Queen set in a mental hospital, while last years Grand Paradise sprawled through a 1970s tropical resort, constructed in a Bushwick warehouse, complet...

A Replica of the Parthenon in Germany Constructed from 100,000 Banned Books "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The Parthenon of Books, 2017. Steel, books, and plastic sheeting. 19.5 29.5 65.5 m. Commissioned by documenta 14, with support from the Ministry of Media and Culture of Argentina.

South American conceptual artist Marta Minujn has just installed a towering new architectural installation in Germany called The Parthenon of Books, a scaffold replica of the famous Greek temple clad in 100,000 copies of banned books. The piece is currently on view in Kassel, Germany as part of a 100-day art exhibition called Documenta 14.

Minujn worked with students from Kassel University to identify 170 titles that have been historically banned worldwide by various institutions, and then sought help from the public to obtain donated copies. The books were then wrapped in a protective plastic coating to shield them from the elements while allowing visitors to easily identify each title.

The Parthenon of Books will be on view through mid-September and you can see more photos at the Instagram hashtag #parthenonofbooks. (thnx, Alice!)

An Animated Introduction to Economist John Maynard Keynes "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

If you know anything about modern economic theory, youve learned the names Milton Friedman and John Maynard Keynesgenerally pitted against each other as representing the divide down the center in Western political economy. While more radical thinkers like F.A. Hayek and, of course, Marx and Engels, hold sway over a significant part of the population, when it comes to the entrenched two-party system in the U.S. and so-called moderate Democratic and Republican politicians, we can handily refer to Friedman and Keynes, respectively, as advocating on the one hand very little government intervention into free market affairs and, on the other, a significant, very visible, guiding hand.

Keynes believed that governments have it in their power, says Alain de Botton in his School of Life animated introduction above, to solve some of the greatest ills of capitalism. Rejecting both communism and the utter wisdom of the unfettered free market, Keynes sought to chart a middle way, theorizing capitalist economies planned through "judicious injections" of money and wise regulations to smooth out the peaks and troughs to which all economies seem fatefully prone. Keynes himself was not prone to many financial ups and downs. Born in 1883 in Cambridge to a well-to-do academic family, writes the BBC, his father was an economist and a philosopher and his mother became the towns first female mayor. He amassed a considerable personal fortune from the financial markets between the wars and became a board member of a number of companies.

At the height of the economic crisis in 1930, Keynes published an essay titled Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren, in which he outlined his be...

7 Tips for Overcoming Street Photography Awkwardness "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Street photography can seem daunting. The idea of photographing strangers and intruding on their privacy might make you nervous, but this video by Eduardo Goye is full of tips for how to overcome this.

Goye is quick to point out that hes never experienced aggression from anyone while shooting on the street, and in fact 99% of the time people are happy to have their picture taken if asked.

However, most of the video describes ways to capture candid photos where people arent aware of whats going on.

You can create powerful images of strangers standing on the street on their phone. Just focus, compose, and wait for them to look up. They may give you a strange look, sure, but it could make the image pop. Snap the photo, and move on.

Wide-angle lenses are helpful too. People dont often realize theyre even in the frame, and you can take close-up shots with a great perspective.

Even so, Goye does stress that unless you want a particularly candid shot, theres nothing wrong with talking to people. Its often the case that your intended subject will take your interest as a compliment. After all, they stood out to you. Maybe they were having a crappy day, and youve just brightened it up!

Be brave, talk to people, and street photography doesnt have to be a scary genre.

Watering Tomatoes: When & How 5 Pro Tips "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Watering Tomatoes is both a Science and an Art

If you love gardening, youve probably already asked an expert or yourself this question: How often should I water my tomato plants? Dont worry, youre not alone in this quest. This guide has 100s of people reading and sharing it each day.

Plenty of people all across the globe take to tomato cultivation, not because tomatoes are relatively easy to grow and sustain; but the fact that they are used in plenty of different cuisines, in a variety of ways more ways than you can ever imagine.

4 Facts about Tomato growth you need to know:

  1. Tomatoes are not magical  Tomatoes cannot be grown everywhere and not all through the year. There are plenty of tomato varieties to pick from. Speak to your local gardening club or neighbor to find out what grows best in the region.
  2. Sunlight is important  Tomato plants need sunlight in order to grow well. So, make sure that you place your plants in a sunny spot of your garden, not too hot though. Read on to know more about these settings.
  3. Nutrition  No matter how well you water, if the plants are not receiving the right nutrition, there isnt really much you can do apart from getting this problem fixed. Check your tomato plants for yellow leaves, as this is a sign of bad nutrition.
  4. Watering tomatoes  This is definitely a skill. But, its not rocket science and can easily be mastered. You could even teach your kids and maybe have them grow their own crop this season its an amazing learning experience and a chance to bond.

Uniting Critical Voices: Where can we Collaborate? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In a recent post on this site, Bonnie Burstow explored the meaning of the term antipsychiatry and coherently argued that the word should be reserved as a descriptor for those seeking the eradication of psychiatry. By contrast, in this article I use antipsychiatry as a catch-all term to refer to the wide range of people who are, to various degrees, critical of Western psychiatry. Although accepting the importance of language, and recognizing that the word antipsychiatry is open to more than one interpretation, semantics is not my focus here. My purpose in writing this piece is a pragmatic one: exploring how best we might harness this array of dissent so as to realize radical change.

If we are to achieve the much-needed paradigm shift in the way we respond to human suffering, it is imperative that the various strands of the antipsychiatry movement unite. Given the powerful vested interests sustaining the dominant bio-medical model, a fragmented opposition will possess insufficient power to transform the current mental health system. Indeed, the adage united we stand, divided we fall has never been more apt.

As a vocal critic of Western psychiatry I actively engage in a variety of social media and, like many others on this side of the debate, often find myself embroiled in arguments regarding the most appropriate ways to help people who are experiencing emotional distress and overwhelm. Predictably, many of these spats are with biological psychiatrists and others wedded to broken brain explanations. But  perhaps more surprisingly  Ive witnessed a growing number of passionately expressed differences between people who each identify with the antipsychiatry movement.

What are the sources of these conflicting ideas?

I suspect that tensions within the diverse range of voices striving for radical change in our approach to emotional distress originate from three major sources:

1. Abolitionists versus reformers?

One important line of division seems to be around whether the ultimate goal of our efforts should be total eradication of psychiatry or its radical reform.

Many argue that the inherent inadequacies of Western psychiatry are so deeply ingrained as to render the current system beyond repair. It is reasoned that the illness like any approach to human suffering, justifying the gross overuse of psychotropic drugs and a perverse approach to risk, is now so energetically defended by vested interests  the pharmaceutical industry and a psychiatry profession desperate to retain its status as a bona fide medical speciality  that the prospect of meaningful change in our mental health services is remote.......

Prostate tissue -3 fatty acids may be protective against prostate cancer progression in men with low-risk prostate cancer. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Cancer Prev Res (Phila). 2014 Jul ;7(7):766-76. Epub 2014 May 13. PMID: 24824038 Abstract Title:  Prostatic and dietary omega-3 fatty acids and prostate cancer progression during active surveillance. Abstract:  The association between omega-3 (-3) fatty acids and prostate cancer has been widely studied. However, little is known about the impact of prostate tissue fatty acid content on prostate cancer progression. We hypothesized that compared with the estimated dietary -3 fatty acids intake and the -3 fatty acids levels measured inred blood cells (RBC), the prostate tissue -3 fatty acid content is more strongly related to prostate cancer progression. We present the initial observations from baseline data of a phase II clinical trial conducted in a cohort of 48 untreated men affected with low-risk prostate cancer, managed under active surveillance. These men underwent a first repeat biopsy session within 6 months after the initial diagnosis of low-risk prostate cancer, at which time 29% of the men had progressed from a Gleason score of 6 to a Gleason score of 7. At the first repeat biopsy session, fatty acid levels were assessed with a food-frequency questionnaire, and determined in the RBC and in the prostate tissue biopsy. We found that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer progression when measured directly in the prostate tissue. Thus, this initial interim study analysis suggests that prostate tissue -3 fatty acids, especially EPA, may be protective against prostate cancer progression in men with low-risk prostate cancer.

This Guy Photographed the Moon and Jupiter with a Game Boy Camera "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Astrophotographer Alexander Pietrow recently made some unusual photo history: he is apparently the first person ever to photograph the Moon and Jupiter using a Game Boy Camera.

First released in 1998, the Game Boy Camera is a monochrome, 2-bit camera that packs a 128112-pixel CMOS sensor. At the time of its introduction, it was the worlds smallest digital camera.

I wondered if it would be possible to do astrophotography with this camera, Pietrow writes. Searching the internet I was surprised that nobody had tried this before and decided to give it a go.

He decided to pair this ancient digital camera with an ancient telescope: the 6 Fraunhofer telescope in Leiden Universitys Old Observatory a telescope that dates way back to 1838. Using a Gosky Universal Cell Phone Adapter, Pietrow managed to align the Game Boy Camera with the telescopes eyepiece.

The biggest issue was a typical Dutch one: waiting for a cloudless night, Pietrow says. For some test shots, he shot a photo of a nearby church clock tower to test the imaging quality:

Modern Quilt Along 2017Asymmetry "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

We are taking a quick break from Skirting the Issue for one day to keep up with our Modern Quilt Along Series. This month the theme is Asymmetry in Modern quilting!

Asymmetry is defined as lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something or a lack of symmetry, for lack of a better explanation. So in symmetry both sides of something are matching or alike, and in asymmetry both sides of an object are different, like in our case a quilt.

Lets look at a few examples

Here is a quilt I made for a Modern Dresden challenge a couple of weeks ago. I was using scraps so that helped right off the bat with the asymmetry of the quilt. I also positioned the dresdens in the bottom half of the quilt top so that the top and bottom wouldnt be matching.

This flying geese quilt block that we did for our Quilt Block of the Month Series last year is also a good one for asymmetry. And all the directions for making one are in the link!

The Stardust Modern Triangle Quilt by Bryan House Quilts is a great example of using asymmetry in a quilt pattern. And the fact that it is bold triangles gives it such a modern feel.

#FreeMalobrodsky "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Russian theatre is fighting for the right to independence and diversity and showing how to do that beyond political protest.

28 June: solidarity action in support of Russian theatre at the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin. Ive figured out why Berlins Brandenburg Gate is so popular among young tourists. Your friend crouches down in front and then you jump in the air your silhouette then appears with the four bronze horses driven by Eirene, the goddess of peace, immortalised on your Instagram or Facebook.

I know this because two days ago I spent three hours in front of the gate. There were a dozen or so of us, all Russian-born Berliners, and we were determined to present our placards, with slogans in English, to the tourists cameras. The placards called for support for creative freedom in Russia and demanded a fair investigation into the case of Alexei Malobrodsky.

A Midsummer Nights nightmare

Alexei Malobrodsky, a well known theatre manager and former general producer of Studio Seven, an independent not-for-profit theatre, is currently being held in a pre-trial remand centre. The studios chief accountant Nina Maslyaeva is also on remand and Yuri Itin, its former head, is under house arrest. At the end of May, Russian Investigative Committee officers also searched the home of director Kirill Serebrennikov, the studios founder, and questioned several other former members of staff before relieving some of them of their foreign passports.

The former studio employees are being accused of embezzling 200 million roubles out of the 216 million (2.8m) they received from the Ministry of Culture for their Platform project. The accusation seems absurd between 2011 and 2014, the project was rolled out at such a rate that it would have been impossible to stage all the shows and hold all the round table discussions for a mere 16 million roubles (208,000).

Russias theatre sector has somehow managed to be much freer and more diverse than its media and cinema. In the current situation, with Russias conservative turn and daily restrictions on freedom of speech, independent artistic expression is inevi...

Op Ed: Initial Coin Offering Risk Factors: More Than Just Legalese "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Initial Coin Offering Risk Factors: More Than Just Legalese

Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) are where cryptographic computing and federal securities laws collide. As investors lacking the technical expertise of early market entrants throw their money into cryptocurrency presales, regulatory agencies like the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission cannot be expected to sit on the sidelines much longer.

Even if regulators do not act, when a presale results in nothing more than profits for its promoter, a disgruntled investor will inevitably make a private securities fraud claim to try and claw back some of their capital; assuming a court will determine a presale of digital tokens to be a private placement of securities, any such federal claim would fall under Rule 10b-5.

However, without conceding the point as to whether digital assets are securities (enough ink has already been spilled on the Howey test), white papers are evolving into documents resembling private placement memoranda typical in a standard Rule 506 private offering of securities. Additionally, a presale purchase agreement is starting to mirror a standard securities purchase agreement. These hybrid documents represent a hedge against current conventional wisdom that digital tokens are not securities.

Disclosure Is Key

Rather than pulling a set of standard securities offering risk factors and slapping them onto the back of its white paper (increasingly, risk factors are being attached as an exhibit to the technical document), some consensus appears to be emerging among practitioners regarding cryptocurrency risk factors that should be disclosed, including:

  • Regulatory risk associated with an undeveloped and emerging body of law both in the United States and internationally;

  • Unexpected transfer restrictions resulting from new regulations;

  • Uncertain tax consequences relating to an investment in digital assets;

  • No guarantee that any digital token will be tradeable on any exchange;

  • Illiquidity and volatility of any cryptocurrency;

  • Potential loss of digital currencies and wallet risks;

14 Abstract Painters to Follow on Instagram | Design*Sponge

Lately Ive found myself drawn to abstract art, as it feels like such a boundless territory. The painter Arshile Gorky once said Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes. Its such a wonderful way of describing how abstract art has the power to inspire our individual curiosities and the reaches of our imaginations. When looking at something abstract, were free to see anything we want. Abstract art becomes full of opportunities, not only for the artist but for the viewer too.

Instagram and other social media venues have given us the opportunity to be inspired by artists from all over the world who share a bit of themselves through their work. Receiving a daily dose of art in my feed has grown my interest in various art forms, and a few weeks ago it even inspired me to make an attempt at painting, something I had never tried before! The wonderful Instagram feeds of these 14 abstract painters have sparked my imagination. I hope youll enjoy them too! Sofia

Experimental Protest Chant Uses 11/8 Time "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

NEW YORK Longtime political activist Lorenzo Marquez attempted to kick off a new protest chant at a march last weekend, but struggled to find followers due to the unorthodox 11/8 time signature, according to fellow marchers unable to follow the rhythm.

Sources at the pro-immigration rally reported Marquez, a performance artist involved in countless protests, spent over two hours chanting in the elusive 11/8 time signature alongside the classic, This is what democracy looks like, and Fuck Donald Trump. The avant garde chant, which counted as 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2, took the form of Donald Trump, Donald Trump, Donald Trump, get out! Nobody, witnesses confirmed, joined in.

Im a little hurt it didnt catch on, yes, said Marquez. Its as simple as it is brilliant. You just have to count it as three 3/8 measures and then one measure of 2/8. Or, one measure of 6/8, and then 5/8 after that! Either way, its dead simple.

The experimental activist questioned whether a true progressive movement could ever take hold in America if people cannot count non-traditional time signatures.

Simple chants in 4/4 are exactly what they are expecting. The establishment wants hand claps and rhymes. The only way to defeat the hegemony is by usurping their expectations and embracing the outr, said the bearded rabble-rouser.

A storied innovator, Marquez has been challenging the status quo in the world of protest chants for over two decades his previous works include use of worlds first computer-generated protest chant at a Bush-era rally against the Iraq war. More recently, at the 2014 Peoples Climate March, he unveiled a chant consisting of one long, unintelligible scream into a cracked hand mirror.

The activist remains hopeful his chant will catch on. Ive just learned the music played on the race results screen in Mario Kart 64 is written in 11/8 time. Im using this information to better reach millennials at my next protest. This is happening, said Marquez.

Should the 11/8 chant never catch on, though, Marquez claimed he has another experiment ready to go, inspired the by the works...

  • Regulatory risk associated with an undeveloped and emerging body of law both in the United States and internationally;

  • Unexpected transfer restrictions resulting from new regulations;

  • Uncertain tax consequences relating to an investment in digital assets;

  • No guarantee that any digital token will be tradeable on any exchange;

  • Illiquidity and volatility of any cryptocurrency;

  • ...

Fotodioxs DLX Stretch Adapters Have Built-in Macro Extension Tubes "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Fotodiox has announced a great new set of lens adapters for mirrorless cameras. The Fotodiox Pro DLX Stretch adapters allow for mounting third-party lenses onto a number of major camera mounts, as well as some awesome other features.

Compatible with Sony E, Micro Four Thirds, and Fujifilm X camera mounts, the adapters will come in a choice of 24 different varieties. This will suit a collection of eight different lens mounts: Canon EOS, Canon FD, Contax/Yashica, Leica R, Minolta MD, Nikon, Olympus Zuiko (OM), and Pentax K.

But what are the special new features? This new adapter has three awesome creative functions, too.

The barrel turns, extending the distance between the lens and the cameras sensor. This gives you the function of an extension tube, allowing you to capture macro images with the lens in use. Pretty neat.

The adapter also has space where you can add one of their new ND filters into the back of the system. This means long exposures in daylight are possible, especially with the ND4, ND8, and ND16 options on offer.

Heres a short video introducing the new adapters:

China Sends Warning to Trump, Starts Banning Individual Visas to South Korea "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Ahead of this weeks G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, Donald Trump called the leaders of China and Japan to discuss the threat posed by North Korea, along with trade issues, the White House said on Sunday. Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose LDP had just suffered a devastating loss in the Tokyo Assembly elections, and according to the White House read out, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula adding that President Trump reiterated his determination to seek more balanced trade relations with Americas trading partners.

The terse statement did not provide further details of the call or say if Trump managed to persuade Xi to endorse his approach of exerting maximum pressure on North Korea, including a slew of further economic and trade sanctions.

According to Reuters, the call may have been prompted by Trump increasing frustration with Chinas inability to rein in North Korea, and the reference to trade was an indication the president may be ready to return to his tougher-talking ways on business with Beijing after holding back in hopes it would put more pressure on Pyongyang. Trump and Xi discussed the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula, Chinas Foreign Ministry said, without elaborating.

Congress Goes After Kratom, Attempts to Expand Drug War "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

By Brandon Turbeville

With the 4th of July holiday having just passed, theres nothing to remind Americans of their freedom more than the staggering speed at which their government has taken and continues to take it away.

After having come under attack by one of the most useless organizations in the federal government the DEA kratom survived only to be attacked by state governments all over the country. But because more and more Americans have realized that decades of propaganda coming from the DEA and other government organs regarding drugs is utter bullshit, many more Americans have tried kratom, which only entrenched their view that the DEA is more concerned in mission creep than anything resembling public health.

This is clearly the case since the DEA recently labeled CBD oil as a schedule 1 drug. While the DEA may feel proud of itself for being able to reclassify a non-psychoactive substance in the same schedule as heroin, it simply reaffirmed its belligerence to individual rights and its obvious connection to Big Pharma and Big Prison in the eyes of many Americans.

While the DEA was forced to back down last year, the federal government is once again creating a platform for a War on Drugs renewed. This is likely coming as a result of drug war relic Jeff Sessions fanatical desire to increase the police state and throw more Americans in cages.

5 SEO Pro Tips for Your Photo Website "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Whether youre just starting your photography career or have years of experience, being found in search engines is critical to accomplishing your goals. In this post, well be sharing 5 helpful SEO tips that can help your photography website place well in search engines.

Full disclosure: This post was sponsored by Squarespace.

Search engine optimization (SEO) for photographers is different than SEO for other professions due to the necessary enhanced focus on image optimization, which has its own set of best practices. We will dive into individual image optimization techniques later, but first we must look at the bigger picture.

Tip #1: Use The Right Keywords

Put yourself in the mind of your customer and think of what keywords theyd type in Google if they were looking to buy what you sell. SEO is keyword driven so determining the keywords people use to find your products gives you an idea of the keywords for which you should attempt to rank well. Googles Keyword Planner allows you to get search volume estimates so you can tell if wedding photographer gets more searches than wedding photography. Having this insight will allow you to better understand which keywords to focus on and include in your content.

As you can see from the example above, you can see that wedding photography has around 5,000 more searches per month than wedding photographer however if you consider the intent of the two queries, its possible that some of the people searching for wedding photography are looking for inspiration for their photos or something else besides an actual photographer. 100% of people searching for wedding photographer are looking for a photographer, so it makes more sense to target that keyword.

Its always better to chase intent rather than volume, so if two keywords have similar volume, always best to target the one that is more indicative of a user looking to be inter...

North Korea Shows It Can Hit US with Latest ICBM Test, Saber Rattling Continues "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

As Americans slept through the first few hours of July 4, Kim Jong Un personally observed the culmination of a years-long goal the testing of a missile that he can use to nuke the US mainland.

Flying nearly 1,800 miles high above earth, the missile flew for over 35 minutes before crashing down into the sea, according to David Wright of the Union of Concerned Scientists. North Korean media stated that it shot the missile at a high arc so as not to hit any other countries.

Wright calculated that at a normal trajectory, the missile could fly 4,160 miles, or as far as Alaska from North Korea. Kim Jong Un has long threatened the US with nuclear attacks, and done everything in his power to demonstrate the capability to launch such an attack. While a single successful ICBM test doesnt mean North Korea has full combat capability, it could indicate that its just a few months away.

China Just Built the Worlds Cutest Panda-Shaped Solar Farm "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

panda shaped solar farm

Renewable energy just got an injection of cuteness thanks to the Panda Power Plant, a new solar farm installed in the Shanxi province of China. The adorable, panda-shaped farm will have an aggregate capacity of 100 MW when completely finished.

The initiative by Panda Green Energy, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, is part of a push to educate China's young people about sustainable energy. Accordingly, an activity center at the solar farm will educate local schoolchildren about solar energy and its benefit. Since starting construction in November 2016, the project has progressed rapidly. The first phase is now complete, with one 50 MW panda being connected to the grid.

In order to form the shape of these cuddly creatures. Panda Green Energy used monocrystalline silicone solar cells for the black portions and thin film solar cells for the white and gray face and belly. Much more than a cute gimmick, the Panda Power Plant is a big step in moving China toward green energy solutions. The 100 MW Panda Power Plant will provide 3.2 billion kWh of green electricity in 25 years, equivalent to saving 1.056 million tons of coal, or reducing 2.74 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

This first Panda Power Plant is just the beginning. Panda Green Energy revealed that it intends to build more solar farms over the next 5 years as part of their Panda 100 program. The goal is to construct along the Belt and Road areas that are part of President Xi Jinpings economic development strategy.

How to Get Noise-free Star Photos with Starry Landscape Stacker "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

After doing an astrophotography shoot and zooming in on the stars, and you may find digital noise spoiling the scene. Removal in Lightroom can result in less color in the cosmos, but using a piece of software called Starry Landscape Stacker software can make the final output much better.

In this 23-minute video tutorial by Lonely Speck, Starry Landscape Stacker is put to the test.

By taking multiple exposures of the night sky, it is possible for the software to track the stars (accounting for the rotation of the Earth) and determine what is and isnt digital noise. This makes for much cleaner and higher quality star shots after removal.

The software will select every star it can find, creating a mask of them. Its possible to adjust this mask by clicking on any stars that have been missed (or hot pixels that have been misinterpreted).

Itll also select the entire area of sky. You can, once more, fine-tune this to ensure the foreground and sky are entirely separated.

Then just click to continue, and Starry Landscape Stacker will output a TIFF file of glorious stars, without drastically reduced noise. You can see a comparison here the softwares output is on the left, compared with one of the original frames on the right:

Consensus Cell Phone Science "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

By Catherine J. Frompovich

What is consensus science?

As a researcher, Ive come to regard the word consensus as equivalent to conspiracy-like insofar as one segment of science research agrees either to accept or not to accept research that is either favorable or unfavorable to their specific vested interests.

Therefore, we find a dogmatic use of consensus science in medicine, specifically regarding vaccines, but moreover, in microwave technology, which doggedly contends there are no such electromagnetics as non-thermal radiation waves, which damage human health and wellbeing. However, such studies go back to the 1930s!

Updating microwave science to make it safe would require costly improvements, which would not fit in with the U.S. military agenda and microwave tech industries cost analyses.

Should subsequent research result in adoption of the Soviet standard by other countries, industries whose practices are based upon less stringent safety regulations could be required to make costly modifications in order to protect workers. Recognition of the .01 mW/cm2 standard could also limit the applications of new electronic technology by making the commercial exploitation of some products unattractive because of increased costs imposed by the need for additional safeguards.[1] [CJF emphasis]

Political baseball: Happiness, unhappiness, and whose team is winning "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Are conservatives happier than liberals. Arthur Brooks thinks so. Brooks is president of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. And hes happy, or at least he comes across as happy in his monthly op-EDS for the Times.  In those op-EDS, he sometimes claims that conservatives are generally happier. When youre talking about the relation between political views and happiness, though  as I do  you ought to consider who is in power. Otherwise, its like asking whether Yankee fans are happier than RedSox fans without checking the AL East standings.

Now that the 2016 GSS data is out, we can compare the happiness of liberals and conservatives during the Bush years and the Obama years. The GSS happiness item asks, Taken all together, how would you say things are these days   would you say that you are very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy?

On the question of who is very happy, it looks as though Brooks is onto something. More of the people on the right are very happy in both periods. But also note that in the Obama years about 12% of those very happy folks (five out of 40) stopped being very happy.

But something else was happening during the Obama years. It wasnt just that some of the very happy conservatives werent quite so happy. The opposition to Obama was not about happiness. Neither was the Trump campaign with its unrelenting negativism. What it showed was that a lot of people on the right were angry. None of that sunny Reaganesque Morning in America: for them. That feeling is reflected in the numbers who told the GSS that they were not too happy.

Among extreme conservatives, the percent who were not happy doubled during the Obama years. The increase in unhappiness was about 60% for those who identified themselves as conservative (neither slight nor extreme).  In the last eight years, the more conservative a persons views, the greater the likelihood of being not too happy. Got Meat? Due to USDA, it Might be Rotten "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Ranchers are suing the USDA in hopes of reinstating country of origin labeling for meat. Keep rotten meat off our plate by calling on Congress to act. Action Alert!

Earlier this month, cattlemen and rancher groups sued the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) over last years repeal of country of origin labeling (COOL) for meat. The lawsuit alleges that the USDAs regulations are in violation of the Meat Inspection Act, which requires slaughtered meat from other countries to be clearly marked. The plaintiffs allege that current USDA rules allow meat from other countries to be sold with a Product of USA label alongside real domestic products.

Previously, Congress caved and repealed COOL when the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that the law unfairly discriminated against meat from Canada and Mexico. The logic was that COOL infringed upon international trade obligations, entitling those countries to take retaliatory measures against US exports that amounted to billions of dollars.

Repealing COOL has undercut domestic meat production. Multinational meat companies can import meat and present it as domestic, rather than paying domestic producers for their products. As a result, domestic farmers and ranchers get lower prices for their meat, and it is driving many out of business..

This matters a great deal. We reported recently on the massive scandal in Brazils meat packing industry in which some of the worlds largest meat producers have allegedly been selling rotten meat and poultry for years. Acid and carcinogenic chemicals were reportedly used to make the meat look fresh, while cardboard, potato, and water were mixed in with poultry products to increase profits.

The USDAs Food Inspection Safety Service recently found [paywall]abscesses, ingesta (the contents of the animals stomach), and unidentified foreign material in meat imported from Brazil. As a result, the USDA has put a halt to Brazilian meat imports to the US.

Without COOL, tainted, rotten meat could be sold alongside US-produced meat that must meet US standards, and consumers would be none the wiser. How many other foreign producers are engaged in the same unsanitary practices as the Brazilian compan...

Fujifilm to Bring In-Body Stabilization to X Series, Report Says "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Fujifilm is reportedly working on bringing in-body image stabilization to its X Series cameras, something the company had previously said wouldnt be possible and or/practical with its XF-mount lenses.

In February 2016, Fujifilm senior product planner Takashi Ueno told Fujilove in an interview that the XF mount is incompatible with in-body image stabilization (IBIS):

our XF mount is not compatible with IBIS [] for the sake of image quality. [] The diameter of our mount was designed for the image circle without IBIS. It means the amount of light at the corners is reduced when the sensor is shifted. We could correct it digitally, but we dont want to do it: we dont want to compromise our image quality.

To cover the larger image circle, not only mount size (and body size), but also lens size must be bigger. We are pursuing the best balance of image quality, size and weight of both cameras and lenses, operability and performance. [] we dont think this direction will be changed in the future. Our highest priority is always image quality.

Those are some pretty strong statements, but Fuji Rumors is now hearing that Fujifilm is in fact working to bring IBIS to future X-mount cameras.

Fujifilms main mirrorless competitors (Sony, Panasonic, Olympus) all offer IBIS and it has become a strong selling point!, writes Fuji Rumors. This rumor comes from a trusted source. This is why I personally take no grain of salt at all. Im 100% sure that these are Fujifilms (current) plans. I also know that Fujifilm can change plans anytime, but I have the feeling that this wont happen this time. IBIS will come

Five Ways To Preserve Meat In the Wild "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of how to preserve meat without a refrigerator and have completely forgotten how our grandfathers preserved their proteins. If you are stranded in the wild, it is important to act fast to preserve the meat. In fact, it can start to go bad in as little as a few hours.

Luckily, there are a number of food preservation techniques for preserving meat in the wild. Here are several techniques that I feel are especially effective:

Five Ways To Preserve Meat In the Wild

Wet Curing Meat

One way to cure meat is to use a saltwater solution with 15-20 percent salt. Place small cuts of meat in this solution, and let it soak for around five minutes. Then, take the meat out of the solution and hang it out to dry.

You shouldnt hang the meat in a sunlit area. This can result in certain parts of the meat curing more quickly than the rest. Also, the area that you choose for drying must be well ventilated. The hooks that you use for the drying process must be made of materials that will not rust.

The curing process usually takes around five days. During this period, it is unlikely that you will have any issues with insects in the meat. The salt naturally repels them.

Dry Curing Meat

Dry curing meat is another effective way of preserving it. When you use this method, the salt is rubbed over the meat and its dried. You also can add other flavorings to the dry rub, such as pepper or other spices.

What To Do After Its Cured

After either curing process is finished, the meat can be rehydrated if its cooked by boiling. After boiling the meat, the nutritional content is nearly unchanged. While I dont find boiled meat to be particularly tasty, this method is highly effective at preserving meat. However, its essential to store the meat in an environment that is dry.

As Cathy ONeil nicely shows in her Weapons of Math Destruction (and associated columns), algorithmic decisionmaking has become increasingly important in domains as diverse as credit, insurance, education, and criminal justice. The algorithms ONeil studies are characterized by their opacity, their scale, and their capacity to damage.

Much of the public debate has focused on a class of algorithms employed in criminal justice, especially in sentencing and parole decisions. As scholars like Bernard Harcourt and Jonathan Simon have noted, criminal justice has been a testing ground for algorithmic decisionmaking since the early 20th century. But most of these early efforts had limited reach (low scale), and they were often published in scholarly venues (low opacity). Modern algorithms are proprietary, and are increasingly employed to decide the sentences or parole decisions for entire states.

Code of Silence, Rebecca Wexlers new piece in Washington Monthlyexplores one such influential algorithm: COMPAS (also the study of an extensive, if contested, ProPublica report). Like ONeil, Wexler focuses on the problem of opacity. The COMPAS algorithm is owned by a for-profit company, Northpointe, and the details of the algorithm are protected by trade secret law. The problems here are both obvious and massive, as Wexler documents.

Beyond the issue of secrecy, though, one issue struck me in reading Wexlers account. One of the main justifications for a tool like COMPAS is that it reduces subjectivity in decisionmaking. The problems here are real: we know that decisionmakers at every point in the criminal justice system treat white and black individuals differently, from who gets stopped and frisked to who receives the death penalty. Complex, secretive algorithms like COMPAS are supposed to help solve this problem by turning the process of making consequential decisions into a mechanically objective one no subjectivity, no bias.

But as Wexlers reporting shows, some of the variables that COMPAS considers (and apparently considers quite strongly) are just as subjec...

How To Use Photoshops Dehaze Tool in CS6 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Dehaze is an impressive fog- and haze-eliminating feature that Adobe released to Creative Cloud users back in 2015. Whilst the feature is not visible in CS6, it is still available and can be applied natively by using the presets that Cross has created.

The presets run in increment of 5 from -100 (which adds haze) to +100. Applying the preset will have the same effect as moving the Dehaze slider in Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom.

To install them, you need to first download them from Crosss website. The button to access them says Enroll in Course for $5, but that wording is just due to a limitation with Crosss website, as he usually sells training courses. Youll have to enter your email address and then use the code freepresets to get the presets for free.

To install the presets, quit Photoshop and Camera Raw and copy the unzipped presets to:

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings

Now open a Raw file in Camera Raw and youll see the list of presets under the Presets tab. Simply click to apply.

Eric Holders Mysterious Threat? 1697 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

- Trade Genius: The safe, sure way to trade. Good afternoon., Im still reporting on: Eric Holders Mysterious Threat? 1697 Synopsis: As President Trump seems to have turned the corner in his battle against those who would use every resource of the U.S. government against him, the Clinton and Obama holdovers in the Deep State bureaucracy grow increasingly desperate to hold onto power. Last Friday former Attorney General Eric Holder a man who recently expressed interest in running for president at the next opportunity tweeted out this: To the career men & women at DOJ/FBI: your actions and integrity will be unfairly questioned. Be prepared, be strong. Duty. Honor. Country. This is the man primarily responsible for arming major Mexican drug cartels in Operation Fast & Furious. This is the man who gave a wink and a nod to the Clintons blantant pay-for-play scheme with Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State shoveling money into the now defunct Clinton Foundation. The Gateway Pundit hypothesized that this could be a warning to disgraced former Attorney General Loretta Lynch keep her mouth shut as she faces a probe by the Senate Judiciary Committee. It could also be a warning to Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe who is under a federal investigation with THREE different inquiries, including blatant Hatch Act violations in openly supporting his wifes failed campaign for a Virginia Senate seat. Or it could be a warning to former National Security advisor Susan Rice who is being hauled in to testify before the House Intelligence Committee in a closed door session. Certainly its a warning to all the above to not squeal on Holder. So now Eric Holder is in the unenviable position of being unable to control his fate for the first time in many years. As was said during the last time a coup was attempted by Richard Nixon & his attorney general John Mitchell in 1972 he is left twisting in the wind. Make Friends Across Religions, Religious Leaders Appeal "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Make Friends

Make Friends is an initiative of the Elijah Interfaith Institute; a nonprofit, international, UNESCO-sponsored interfaith organization which was founded by Rabbi Alon Goshen-Gottstein in 1996 with offices in Israel and the United States. We can see the joint statement of 22 worlds most important religious leaders in an interesting video.

In a rare movie, worlds most prominent religious leaders are giving short but effective advices how religion can be used as a bridge between people not a stumbling block. Leaders from Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other faiths are talking about reconciliation of different perceptions of faith. Muslim cleric Ayatollah Sayyid Fadhel Al-Milani says in the video: "Our advice is to make friends to followers of all religions. My religious life became richer with his explanations, so much richer, Francis said of Argentinean Rabbi Abraham Skorka. And I guess the same happened for him.

Rabbi Dr. Alon Goshen-Gottstein said about the joint statement that it represents "a significant novelty from a theological perspective." "We cannot deny that in the books of many religions you can find texts that are not very open, even hostile, to people of other faiths," he said. "Therefore, when the world's most important leaders call for friendship, they are in fact affirming a particular way of practicing religion and rejecting another."

Personal contact, personal friendship then we can exchange a deeper level of experience, said the Dalai Lama. One of the wonderful things about spending time with people completely unlike you is you discover how much you have in common. The same fears, the same hopes, the same concerns, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks said.

Friendship and getting to know one another are the antidotes to negativity and divisions in society, enhancing understanding and unity, stands on the official site of the Elijah Interfaith Institute. Certainly, people should be more tolerant and open to differences which can be seen everywhere. The lack of understanding between different races, religions, sexual orientations etc is often a reason for violence.

But, what about people who are not religious? We dont see in this video any message addressed to non-religious and their number is growing every day.

12 Cheerful and Creative Workspaces | Design*Sponge

Itll soon be a year since I started writing for Design*Sponge, and the same amount of time since I shifted from working in an office to mainly working from home. During this past year Ive come to realize just how important our workspaces really are, and how much they can inspire the work that we do.

Ive always been one to decorate my desk at work and make it my own, but theres something extra special about creating a personal office space at home   the options for creative and fun solutions are only limited to ones own imagination. My current workspace is an antique secretary desk located in the hall of my one bedroom apartment. It has dents, scratches and signs of various artistic endeavors that punch up the charm factor.

Lately, Ive been looking to add some art and lighting to make my little nook an even more inspiring place to work from. To get new ideas, Ive browsed our archives for offices that feel both unique and surprising. These 12 cheerful workspaces are bound to get the creative juices flowing! Sofia

When a Cat Co-Authored a Paper in a Leading Physics Journal (1975) "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Back in 1975, Jack H. Hetherington, a physics professor at Michigan State University, wrote a research paper on lowtemperature physics for the respected scientific journal Physical Review Letters. Before sending it off, Hetherington asked a colleague to review the paper, just to make sure it covered the right bases. What happened next Hetherington explained in the 1982 book, More Random Walks in Science:

Before I submitted [the article], I asked a colleague to read it over and he said, 'Its a fine paper, but theyll send it right back.' He explained that that is because of the Editor's rule that the word "we" should not be used in a paper with only a single author. Changing the paper to the impersonal seemed too difficult now, and it was all written and typed; therefore, after an evenings thought, I simply asked the secretary to change the title page to include the name of the family cat, a Siamese called Chester, sired one summer by Willard (one of the few unfixed male Siamese cats in Aspen, Colorado). I added the initials F D in front of the name to stand for Felix Domesticus and thus created F D C Willard.

The editors eventually accepted the paper, "Two-, Three-, and Four-Atom Exchange Effects in bcc 3 He." And the ruse lasted until, remembers Hetherington, a visitor [came to the university and] asked to talk to me, and since I was unavailable asked to talk with Willard. Everyone laughed and soon the cat was out of the bag. (Pun surely intended.) Apparently only the journal editors didn't find humor in the joke.

Anti-Semitism Office Soon to be Closed "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Ira Forman

The position of Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism was established in 2004 by the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act. This position was most recently filled by Ira Forman who served as the special envoy from May 2013 until January 20, 2017 when, like all envoys appointed under President Obama, his post was not granted an extension. It has been empty since President Trump took office in January and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said earlier this month he believed the role actually interferes with the governments efforts to combat anti-Semitism.

One of the questions Ive asked is, if were really going to affect these areas, these special areas, dont we have to affect it through the delivery on mission at every level at every country? Tillerson said. And by having a special person, an envoy out here, one of my experiences is, mission then says, Oh, weve got somebody else that does that, and then they stop doing it.

Unfortunately, closure of the Office to Combat and Monitor Anti-Semitism is slated for Saturday. The office currently has two half-time employees but they will be reassigned come July 1, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Human rights groups headed by the Jewish ones are making efforts to persuade the Trump administration to preserve its envoy to combat anti-Semitism. They are lobbying the administration on social media and through petitions, including one sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. In the first three months of this year, the Anti-Defamation League stated that there were 541 incidents, among them 150 bomb threats made towards Jewish schools and centers.

Tillerson, current United States Secretary of State will soon receive a letter from Katrina Lantos Swett, whose father sponsored the legislation that created the position 13 years ago. She is a daughter of the late U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to have served in Congress. She is hoping to persuade Secretary Tillerson not to make an unnecessary mistake and she said: Its baffling to me that a time when we all acknowledge that anti-Semitism is a huge problem worldwide, that there wouldnt be great eagerness to move swiftly to fill this post.

I cant believe someone at the White House wont have better sense than to realize that this is a disaster, Forman told Jewish Insider in February. I just cant believe that they would even think of this given the relatively small budget needed to run this office. The office exists by legislation. Its just a matter of someone signing up to fund it. This is as bipartisan as an issue as you can get, and I just hope folks at the Whit...

Japanese Bakery Transforms Ordinary Bread Into a Tasty Square Watermelon Loaf "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Square Watermelon Bread

Combining the novelty of a square watermelon with the new watermelon bread trend, Japanese bakery Bo-LoGne presents a delightful square watermelon loaf. Sold online by the Daimaru Matsuzakaya department store, the bread is both beautiful and delicious.

Known as Suika Pan (literally Watermelon Bread in Japanese), the bakery takes pains to create the illusion of your favorite fruit. The exterior stripped to mimic a real watermelon rind, with the interior seeds made from bits of chocolate.

Once you cut in, that's where the magic really happens, as each slice takes on the uncanny illusion of watermelon. With dough made from watermelon juice, the essence of this summertime treat is in every bite. And, if you throw it in the toaster, you'll have a sweet fragrance wafting through the house.

With real square watermelon a high-end luxury that can cost two to three times that of a normal one, the Suika Pan clocks in at an affordable 2,400 yen (about $23). Unfortunately, Daimaru Matsuzakaya only ships within Japan, but gives great inspiration to create your own loaf.

Taxpayer Money can Fund Certain Church Projects, Court Ruled "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In the Missouri case, which dates to 2012, the church applied for funding to replace the pea-gravel surface of its child learning center's playground with material made from recycled tires. According to Missouris Blaine amendment there is a provision in the state constitution that bans public funding of religious organizations, including schools. Similar provisions exist in nearly 40 state constitutions and have been the basis for overturning private school choice programs.

The Supreme Court ruled -2 on Monday (June 26) that if the government makes a grant available to the public and a church qualifies for it, it cant be ruled out simply because its religious. The state wrongly denied the church an otherwise available public benefit on account of its religious status, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion. Roberts said in his opinion that excluding this church from receiving the grant to upgrade a playground was odious to our nations principles:

The State in this case expressly requires Trinity Lutheran to renounce its religious character in order to participate in an otherwise generally available public benefit program, for which it is fully qualified the exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution all the same, and cannot stand.

Five of the justices who ruled in favor of Trinity Lutheran Roberts, Kennedy, Alito, Kagan, and Breyer believe this case is just about playgrounds (and similar grants). Its Thomas and Gorsuch who want a broader decision. Two justices, Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented in the case. To hear the Court tell it, this is a simple case about recycling tires to resurface a playground. The stakes are higher. This case is about nothing less than the relationship between religious institutions and the civil government that is, between church and state, Sotomayor wrote. She made a great point because when you renovate a playground on church property, you are helping that church. When you give taxpayer money to the church, you are obviously helping that church no matter what the money will be used for.

Christian religious liberty groups are celebrating this decision. Alliance Defending Freedom called this a huge religious freedom victory. Equal treatment of a religious organization in a program that provides only secular benefits, like a partial reimbursement grant for playground surfacing, isnt a government endorsement of religion. After this ru...

React Pattern: Extract Child Components to Avoid Binding "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Having issues with your component? Extract that wild child!

Heres a common scenario in React: Youre mapping over an array, and you need each item to call a click handler and with some relevant data.

Heres an example. Im iterating over a list of users and passing the userId to delete to the deleteUser function on line 29.

Heres a working example on Codesandbox. (which is awesome )

So Whats the Problem?

Im using an arrow function in the click handler. This means every time render runs, a new function is allocated. In many cases, this isnt a big deal. But if you have child components, theyll re-render even when data hasnt changed because each render allocates a new function.

Bottom line: Avoid declaring arrow functions or binding in render for optimal performance. My team uses this ESLint rule to help alert us to this issue.

Whats the Solution?

So how do you avoid binding and arrow functions in render? One option is to extract a child component. Here, Ive extracted the list item to UserListItem.js:

Then, the parent components render gets simpler, and no longer needs to contain an arrow function. It just passes the relevant context for each list item down via props:

Heres a working example of the refactor.

Yay or Yuck?

This pattern improves performance by eliminating redundant function allocations. So its most useful when this situation applies to your component:

  1. Render is called frequently.
  2. Rendering children is expensive.

Admittedly, extracting a child component as Ive suggested above is extra work too. It requires more moving parts, and more code. So if youre not having performance issues, its arguably a premature optimization .

So you have two options: Either allow arrows and binds everywhere (and deal with perf issues if they pop up), or forbid them for optimal performance and consistency.

Documenta 14 opened last month in Kassel, a dreary, small town in the center of Germany. The exhibition has been held here ever since it was founded, in 1955, as part of a larger project of reintroducing humanist images and traditions into postwar German society. Every five years, residents of this working-class town gear up to host about a million visitors from around the world, and pride themselves on being the documenta stadt, or documenta city, as its official tagline declares. This time, however, citizens were surprised to learn that the exhibition will open in another city before theirs: Athens.

Under this editions title Learning from Athens, the curators, led by artistic director Adam Szymczyk, have made Athens their home for the last few years, while they worked with local institutions and artists. They even declared at the Kassel press conference that they now felt like Athenians a feeling other Athenians, based there for longer than just a curatorial project, reportedly did not share. The curators have set up the two cities as symbolic poles of todays Europe: Kassel a working-class town in economically flourishing Germany, Athens the capital of struggling Greece; Kassel with barely any buildings constructed before WWII remaining, Athens crammed with layers of cultural history, the very image of Western civilization. Germany is Greeces biggest creditor and engineered the austerity policies that had Greece debating whether to leave the EU in 2015; it has...

I can still remember the morning of June 29, 2007. I was living in NYC, working at an ad agency, McCann-Erickson. Though I had been following the release of the iPhone and I couldnt wait to get my hands on one, I knew I couldnt spend the day in line waiting as I had responsibilities at work.

I arrived at my office, however, and my very cool boss looked at me and said, Austin, what are you doing here? I was a little confused as it was a standard work day and I was on time. What do you mean? I said. She responded, Its iPhone day. Youve been talking about this for months! Get outta here and go get in line! I got a big smile on my face, said thanks, and bolted straight to the Fifth Avenue store at about 10AM.

I carried a Leica D-LUX 3 at the time (still love that thing) and shot a few very shaky clips throughout the day and cut them into this quick piece.

Why I Walk Everywhere And You Should Too "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Imagine if you could transport yourself from one place to another without paying an exuberant amount in congestion charges or a single cent to overenthusiastic vendors. Imagine travelling tax free, and in a way that saved the planet at the same time. Imagine if this technology was so cheap, easy-to-use, culturally sensitive and readily available the world over that it could be used by every single person, every single day. How amazing is science and technology in the 21st century? We have come so far since our primal great-great-great-great grandparents hoisted themselves up on two legs and began to walk the Earth.

Or have we?

Walking is no new concept. Our ancestors have been propelling one foot in front of the other for thousands of years. As people have gotten lazier, and the technology we use every day has gotten crazier, we seem to have forgotten how handy walking can be. Especially when we are all poor hobos catching budget flights the world over with carry-on baggage only, layering all our jumpers and ski jackets in such a fashion that if we were to sink over the Indian Ocean, we wouldnt require use of any self-inflating life vests. Walking is not only the laypersons greatest asset, but it is one of the greatest tools a traveller could ever utilise. To prove it, I present to you the following.

More pasta, more Pringles, more Prosecco

There is no way I ever could have persisted with a pack-a-day Haribo gummy confectionary habit throughout two months in Europe if I hadnt have been walking my bloody arse off day in and day out. Im sure most dieticians would agree this isnt a sustainable (or healthy) practice. But when you walk everywhere, anything is possible. Just ate a whole pizza? Good. You should be carb loading anyway for your afternoon climb up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Food is fuel, and all the more important when you are committing to the cheapest form of transport available.

Its free

Seriously, name another mode of transport with that kind of guarantee. We can barely afford public transport at home, how are we supposed to extend this privilege to overseas travel when we dont even have our weekly incomes to rely on?  There are far better things you could spend money on rather than be squished into a space barely larger than your tightest pair of jeans on a grimy underground train breathing recycled air. Just think, that spare change could be put towards air-conditioned hostel rooms, a bottle of red (or three) and surfing lessons. Even a...

New York Times on Apple Park "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Kathy Chin Leong, New York Times:

City officials and residents say this project is like nothing theyve seen before. It is even bringing tourists.

Onlookers snap pictures of the spaceship from the streets. TV helicopters circle above. Amateur photographers ask residents if they can stand on driveways to operate their drones, hoping to get a closer look at Apple Park.

The entire project shows off Apples obsession with details. The custom windows were made in Germany and are considered the worlds largest panels of curved glass. One pair of glass doors is 92 feet high. The finish on the underground concrete garage, said David Brandt, Cupertinos city manager, is so shiny it is almost like glass.

Mind-blowing, mind-blowing, mind-blowing, the mayor, Savita Vaidhyanathan, said about her visit to the site. I saw the underground 1,000-seat theater and the carbon-fiber roof. The roof was made in Dubai, and it was transported and assembled here. I love that its here and that I can brag about it.

The price of property in the neighborhood has also become a source of some worry. Sunnyvale and Cupertino, like many other Silicon Valley towns, have had an extended real estate boom, as the tech industry has expanded. Prices in the area really started to rise, real estate agents and residents said, after Apple released its plans.

A three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,400-square-foot ranch-style house that cost $750,000 in 2011 has doubled in price. Since Apple said it was moving into the former Hewlett-Packard site, prices have moved up 15 to 20 percent year after year, said Art Maryon, a local real estate agent. Today, bidders usually offer 20 to 25 percent over the asking price.

Fascinating piece.
