Almost Lover "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Almost Lover

Your fingertips across my skin

The palm trees swaying in the wind

Images

Thats the opening line to a song thats taken me on a journey I would love to share with you.

Its about an Almost Lover

The very first time I heard Almost Lover I was obsessed with LA Ink, Kat Von D and her tattooing crew.  Kat had a shop girl named Pixie.  I loved Pixie and I followed her Myspace page. Pixies Myspace song was from a woman who called herself A Fine Frenzy and the song was Almost Lover.

I loved Almost Lover

The song made me happy. Its a sad song about a breakup but for my own reasons it made me happy. The lyrics are about her lover leaving her.  Shes singing about the moment when you feel your life cannot go on because you love someone so much and life blindsides you. My life wasnt that moment but it wasnt happy either. It just was my life and I was doing my best to live it.  I was married and I loved him the way the song portrays her love for her almost lover.  I loved this song and I made it my Myspace song just like Pixie for my own reasons.  I would play it on repeat and I loved it.  I found comfort in this song because it was my past.  He had left me before and I felt that I overcame this song.  My almost lover came back.  I beat the lyrics to the song and the images the artist speaks of that resonated with me made me smile because I felt I won.

My Almost Lover was my Lover

As the song starts I can feel his fingertips gliding over my skin as palm trees sway in the wind. I can see those images as she describes them.  I have lived those images and in that moment of introduction to this song, those images made me smile.

The next line

You sang me Spanish lullabies

The sweetest sadness in your eyes

Clever trick

When she says that I can hear him saying to me te amo con todo mi corazon I love you with all my heart he would always say to me in Spanish.  It was the only Spanish he really said to me but it was all I needed to hear.

Clever trick

I used to hear this song and smile.  It became our song after a while and he began to love it as much as I l...

Eritrean Modernism, a Brazilian Slave Port, and More Join UNESCO World Heritage Site List "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The Fiat Tagliero Building, Asmara, Eritrea (2015) (photo by sailko/Wikimedia)

The 41st session of the World Heritage Committee is underway through tomorrow in Krakow, with numerous new UNESCO World Heritage Sites announced. New listings this year have not been without controversy, with the designation of the Old City of Hebron as a Palestinian World Heritage site drawing swift criticism from Israel. Hebron is located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and in response Israel has reduced its United Nations funding. The official recognition of the United Nations for a World Heritage Site is based on its historical, cultural, or other significance, and gives these sites protection through international treaties.

Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is the first modernist city to be listed as a World Heritage site. From its Fiat Tagliero garage, with streamlined wings that soar like an airplane, to an art deco bowling alley, Asmara has an incredible wealth of 1930s Italian futurist experimentation. (Curbed has a vibrant photo essay on its structures.) Angola also got its first listing, with the plateau town of Mbanza Kongo. UNESCO states that its historical structures, dating back to the 14th century, demonstrate more than anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa, the profound changes caused by the introduction of Christianity and the arrival of the Portuguese into Central Africa.

Adobe Admits Lightroom is Slow, Says Speeding It Up Is Top Priority "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

If youre a photographer whos frustrated with Lightroom running slowly (even on a powerful computer), youre not alone its a struggle shared by many, many people who use the program. But hope may be on the horizon. Adobe has just taken the rare step of publicly admitting Lightrooms performance issues and says fixing it is the companys top priority.

In a blog post titled On Lightroom Performance and published to Lightroom Journal, Adobe Photo Product Manager Tom Hogarty writes that Adobe isnt unaware of or ignoring Lightrooms speed issues:

I would like to address concerns recently voiced by our community of customers around Lightroom performance, as improving performance is our current top priority. We have a history, starting with our first public beta, of working with our customers to address workflow and feature needs, and wed like to take that same approach regarding your performance concerns. We already understand many of the current pain points around GPU, import performance, certain editing tasks and review workflows and are investing heavily in improving those areas.

Adobe also wants to hear what you think and what youd like Lightroom to be faster at.

Over the past year weve added numerous enhancements to address your performance concerns but we understand we will have a lot of work to do to meet your expectations, Hogarty writes. If you have feedback or would like to work with the Lightroom team on your most pressing issues, please fill out this survey.

Local Dad Still Hasnt Realized Freddie Mercury Was Gay "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

TRENTON, N.J. Local father Frank Redondo continues to live unknowingly under speculation and ridicule due to his unshakeable belief that Freddie Mercury was heterosexual, according to friends and family.

The CNC machinist, known for his loves of boxing, beer, and operatic rock, has allegedly thought Mercury to be the ultimate mans man and lady killer unchecked for decades.

We were at Hooters the first time I heard it, said co-worker Jim Doobie Gibson. Someone put We Will Rock You on the jukebox, and Frank looks around and says, Man, Freddie Mercury would have crushed all this pussy in his sleep. I laughed my ass off for almost a minute straight before I realized he wasnt joking.

Valerie Redondo, Franks wife of 20 years, still struggles with her husbands delusion.

When I met Frank, he looked like exactly like Freddie in his A Night at the Opera prime, Valerie said wistfully. When the kids play their music, Frank always scoffs. He says they need to stop listening to such wimpy music or it might turn them crooked. And then he blasts Queen and belts along. I dont have the heart to tell him at this point. He thinks Freddie died of exhaustion.

Despite her husbands harmless worship of Mercury, Valerie has come to see it as a burden.

Related:

So much of Franks identity as a man is built around Freddie. I dont know how hed handle the truth, she said. Itd be like waking up a sleepwalker who knows what harm it could cause?

Those close to Frank Redondo report he can often be heard espousing Mercurys supreme manliness at bars around Trenton.

Dynamite with a laser beam. Fat-bottom girls? Ol Mustache Ride Mercury knows whats up, Redondo said at a recent bull session with friends. The only guy as all-American man-tough as him was that dude from Judas Priest. All that leather you cant tell me that guy didnt get more trim than a barber.

Hand-Painted Walls and Artwork Enriches a Midwestern Familys Home "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Hand-Painted Walls and Artwork Enriches a Midwestern Family's Home, Design*Sponge

When she was 16, artist Mary-Catheryn Baker met her current husband Jordan. You can bet his company was more than welcome as young Mary-Catheryn had just moved to the States from South America and was, unsurprisingly, in the midst of a culture shock. For years they trekked through life together as he showed her the ropes and, eventually, asked for her hand. Then came the children. Three to be exact and each one an adventure in their own right. All in all its been a whirlwind of a life for the couple, and their latest escapade, turning a house outside Grand Rapids, MI into a home, has been no different.

Situated on nearly three acres, the spot was move-in ready and fairly updated when the family took it over a year ago. Fair wasnt enough for this creative duo though. Instead, theyve worked tirelessly to make it a vibrant space for their growing brood. Gone are several of the 90s-era furnishings that used to dominate the rooms and in their place are cheerful colors and paintings courtesy of the familys creative matriarch. Mary-Catheryn didnt let the edges of a canvas box in her creativity though. No, no, no. Shes expanded her work to include more than just framed pieces decked out in bustling florals and charming animals. Lately shes used her talents to add pattern and zest to the actual walls of her and Jordans property though hand-painted wallpapers and popping paint colors. (Pay close attention to the laundry room. Her work there is some of the best weve ever featured.)

Sure its filled with paintings, color and cheer, the home this couple has crafted is much more than just a pretty place. You see, Mary-Catheryn comes from a country where more people than not dont have homes at all. And as she walks her houses halls and her children play on the plot she and her husband have worked so hard to provide them with, shes reminded of the many gifts the family has been given. Scroll down to check out the humble Baker broods slice of the American...

It's now confirmed that the claim of "17 intelligence agencies" was yet another YUGE democrat canard, down to at most 4, as everyone with a shred of common sense and intellectual honesty has been saying all along. How long until those "4 intelligence agencies" are revealed to be just a few Obama/DNC loyalists in charge of cooking up "intelligence reports" for purely political purposes?

"But the DNC-contracted cybersecurity experts at Crowdstrike said..."

Ah yes, the same Crowdstrike that attributed the Sony hack to North Korea, which then turned out to be the work of a Sony insider. What price did the DNC pay for their reliable services, and why did they only turn their email server over to Crowdstrike instead of the DHS and the FBI who also requested it?

"Yeah but there were foreign language keyboard artifacts, and like Russian IP addresses and stuff!"

The public-domain evidence behind the Russia hoax is so pathetic and flimsy, yet it all makes no difference to dumbed-down, indoctrinated democrats who lack either the desire or capacity to think for themselves. The pre-packaged media narrative of Donald Trump as Literally Hitler 2.0 trumps all other moral considerations that c...

When a Panorama Selfie Goes Wrong "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The intelligent panorama features on smartphones these days can help capture some pretty neat shots, but they can also produce some very strange results if things go wrong. Mitchell Flann and Erika Gomos were using the Wide Selfie mode on a Samsung Galaxy S7 recently when Gomos sneezed midway through the exposure. The gem above is what resulted.

Were Canadians from Vancouver BC and weve been backpacking Europe for a month and a half, and we have another two weeks to go. That photo was taken beside the Hungarian parliament building in Budapest along the Danube river, Flann tells PetaPixel. Erika and I have been taking wide selfies like that with my phone in almost every city and there have been some funny malfunctions before, but never like this.

When I first took it we were in tears laughing, Flann says. It was actually pretty inappropriate to laugh that hard, since we were directly in front of a beautiful memorial to the Hungarian Jews who died there in WWII.

After sharing the photo on Reddit, it exploded: Flanns post has since received over 150,000 upvotes there.

Learn the Science of Deep Focus and Hyperfocal Distance "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Hyperfocal distance is a tool often used by certain genres of photography to render an entire scene in focus. It allows you to capture the foreground through to the background, keeping the whole image sharp. But how does it work? This 12-minute video by Filmmaker IQ looks at the science behind hyperfocal distance.

Increasing the f-stop value to keep a scene in focus isnt necessarily always the best option. Once you reach a certain point, diffraction takes hold and your photo will become soft because of the small aperture.

Instead, try focusing at the hyperfocal distance. Its the optimum point which you can focus at, using f/8 or similar, to achieve the largest possible depth of field through the image.

If you love algebra, then youll enjoy this equation decoding the actual workings of hyperfocal distance:

It means that a lens with a smaller focal length has a hyperfocal distance closer to the camera. A higher f-stop also renders the hyperfocal distance closer. Finally, the same goes for a larger circle of confusion (the size a spot of light can be before it is no longer deemed acceptably sharp).

You can see in this clip from the video that light coming from the hyperfocal distance point is perfectly sharp, running straight through the center of the circle of confusion. But crucially, light from both double and half this distance also runs within the confines of the circle of confusion, also rendering these areas in the scene sharp.

The entire 12-minute video is quite fascinating and definitely worth watching if you want to understand the science behind this widely used concept in photography.

Human rights protection at home and abroad: Lessons to be learned from the Colombian peace process "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Human rights abuses in Colombia can serve as a stark reminder of what the UK has to lose.

Ensuring access to justice for victims of human rights abuses will be fundamental to the success of the Colombian peace process. Photo: U.S. Special Envoy for the Colombian Peace Process, Bernard Aronson, Addresses Conflict Victims. Wikimedia Commons/U.S. Department of State from United States. Some rights reserved.

Kofi Annan once said: "We will not enjoy security without development, we will not enjoy development without security, and we will not enjoy either without respect for human rights."

In the wake of rising hate crime and racist attacks following the Brexit referendum and the UN expressing serious concern regarding the disproportionate and adverse impacts that austerity is having on disadvantaged and marginalised groups in the UK, this is a sentiment which the UK Government must not forget.

The salience of Kofi Annans message was brought home to me during a recent visit which my colleague Elisabeth Andresen and I made to Colombia as part of the fifth biennial visit of the International Caravana of Jurists (the 'Colombia Caravana'). Along with 53 other lawyers and judges from 10 different countries around the world, we visited seven regions of the country and the capital, Bogot, in order to record testimony from human rights defenders and victims of human rights abuses.

This was a historic time to visit the country as on 24 August 2016 a peace agreement was signed between the Colombian government and the guerrilla movement FARC, bringing to an end a 50 year conflict which has seen hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced. The agreement intends to establish a transitional justice system to provide reparations to victims, and hold to account those who have committed crimes during the conflict.

Although the peace process is an extremely important step forward for Colombia, it was clear from our visit that significant challenges remain. Ensuring access to justice for v...

Nikon D750 vs Fujifilm X-T2: Shooting Motorsport "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

My name is Chris Harrison, and Im a photographer based in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England. In this post, Ill share a head to head comparison of the Nikon D750 DSLR and Fujifilm X-T2 mirrorless camera in shooting motorsport.

Due to being a creature of habit more than any master plan to compare these two cameras, I ended up shooting the hill climb at the 2017 Festival of Speed with the Fuji kit from near enough the exact same spot as the 2016 event with the Nikon. I also realized that (again being a creature of habit) the gear used for each system was pretty similar. I thought it would be interesting to throw together a comparison of the two systems.

I know how these things can often go, so Ill list the caveats in an easy to digest list before I get started:

  • This was never planned.
  • Had I planned it, I wouldve thrown in the Fuji 56mm f/1.2 to give a true equivalent focal length comparison (with the Nikon 85mm 1.4).
  • Had I planned it, I wouldve aimed to grab a few more comparable shots in the paddock.
  • Had I planned it, I wouldve used similar settings on the hill instead of whatever felt right at the time.
  • They are a year apart, so clearly weather/light and angles are different, the light was beautiful in 2016 (Nikon), but pretty terrible in 2017 (Fuji).
  • Ive been usin...

See What Freezing Lemons Can Do And You Will Do This Forever! "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

by Healthy & Tasty Recipes

See what freezing lemons can do and you will do this forever!

They are incredibly healthy and offer countless health benefits, as they strengthen the health in various ways.

They are also high in lemonoids, which prevent the growth and development of cancers and tumors in the case of breast cancer.

Studies have shown that the lemon peel contains twice as many vitamins as the fruit itself, and it has anti-cancer, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and antifungal properties.

We all just love lemons, as they offer a plethora of health benefits, and can be used as a natural medicine, as a household cleaning agent, as a delicious addition to meals, salads, smoothies and desserts, and much more.

These fruits detoxify the body, but when juiced, they lose a great part of the medicinal capacity and nutrients.

5 Signs Your Third Eye Is Opening "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

by Power of Positivity

Since ancient times, the third eye had been revered by all kinds of cultures. Today, we know it as the pineal gland, but it is still called the third eye in the spiritual realm. The third eye is viewed as a spiritual sign representing our capability to conquer all kinds of challenges in daily life by tapping into our inner wisdom.

But there is much more to the third eye than that. In most Eastern traditions, the third eye is undoubtedly real; a thing that anybody can perceive and obviously feel if they have a strong sense of self and mindfulness. It is what is often referred to as the connection between our body and our spirit.

When we meditate with any consistency, the third eye opens and your inner guide becomes stronger and a more present guiding force in your life.

Here are five signs your third eye is opening:

1. A dull sensation of pressure between the eyebrows.

Generally when the third eye starts to manifest on a much deeper level, theres a related consciousness of sensation between eyebrows. It could seem like somebody is lightly touching us at that moment, or you might feel a spreading of warmth.

Prescription Broccoli In A Pill Seen as a Future Diabetes Treatment "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

broccoli in a pill

By Alex Pietrowski

The life-changing disease Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise worldwide, and especially alarming is the fact that rates are on the rise among children and teenagers, potentially condemning them to a lifetime of dependence on pills, shots, blood-sugar testing, and doctors visits.

There are many natural alternatives to popular prescription medicines, in fact, many of todays pharmaceuticals are derived from plants, and now concentrated broccoli is being seen as a potential treatment for diabetes.

Sulforophane is a miracle compound you have probably never heard of. Found in its highest concentrations in broccoli, and especially broccoli sprouts, the compound is something anyone can grow in their kitchen and consume on a regular basis for very little money, and is being shown to have a beneficial effect on many aspects of health.

Sulforaphane is a precursor nutrient. Meaning, when it enters the body, it starts out as something else and is processed into the super beneficial compound which can stop cancerous tumors from doubling, and help diabetics to balance their blood sugar levels, among hundreds of other clinically-proven health benefits. California Got One Right "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

California declares glyphosate a toxic cancer-causing chemical, effective July 7, 2017

glyphosate-testing(NatualHealth365) In a win for consumer rights and safety, the OEHHA (California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment) has declared that glyphosate weed killer is a known, cancer-causing carcinogen. It will be added to the states Proposition 65 warning list.

Proposition 65, also known as The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was passed in order to protect California drinking water from toxic, cancer-causing substances and those known to cause birth defects.

Glyphosate designated probably carcinogenic by WHO in 2015

Glyphosate weed killer is sold under numerous brand names, but the most widely used is Roundup, manufactured by the Monsanto company. The state of California is using statute CAS #107-83-6 to change the designation of the weed killer, which they say has cancer as a known endpoint for some people who are exposed to it.

This designation is a blow to companies that use glyphosate in their products. Efforts to ban the substance have ramped up ever since the WHO (World Health Organization) designated it as probably carcinogenic in 2015.

As of July 7, California retailers must add cancer warning labels to all products containing glyphosate. However, cancer warnings will as yet not be required on foods and grocery items t...

How to Make a DIY Beauty Dish for Less Than $7 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Beauty dishes are great pieces of equipment to have in your lighting arsenal, but they come at a price. You can spend hundreds of dollars on a dish, yet using a cheap shoot-through umbrella can easily produce the same effect, as this 10-minute tutorial by Joe Edelman shows.

A beauty dish is very handy in portrait photography because of its very rapid fall-off of light. Theyre ideal for using close to the subject, creating a fairly hard light without a hot spot.

But a shoot-through umbrella allows you to recreate this effect, and theyre available for only $6. Your remaining buck is spent on a piece of black foam, letting you create a circle to prevent the hot spot and give a dot inside the catchlight, signatory of a beauty dish.

The comparison shots below show that while the umbrella is just a modifier, it does well to reproduce the effect of a beauty dish on its own, catchlight and all.

The shot with the actual beauty dish does give some more contrast and a crisper shadow under the jaw, but the $7 option is not far off at all.

Make sure to watch the video above for full instruction of how and when to use a beauty dish, as well as the specifics of positioning and shooting with your DIY beauty dish.

Watch the Making of a Hand-Crafted Violin, from Start to Finish, in a Beautiful, Wordless Documentary "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The history of the violin can be traced back to 1530, when a violin-like instrument first appeared in Gaudenzio Ferrari's painting, "Madonna of the Orange Tree." By the 1550s, Andrea Amati and his descendants began to craft priceless violins, in the form we know them today. And then followed other families closely associated with the golden age of these stringed instruments--the Bergonzi, the Guarneri, the Stradivari.

Today, luthiers like Dominique Nicosia continue the same tradition. Above you can watch Nicosia hand-craft a violin at the Muse de la lutherie et de l'archterie franaises in northeastern France. Shot by Baptiste Buob, the wordless documentary walks you through the making of a violin, from start to finish. A process that takes a luthier 3-4 weeks, working full-time, gets covered in 33 elegant minutes. Savor each and every one of them.

Bonus: Below, watch another film by Baptiste Buob--this one a 28-minute film detailing how French bow maker Roch Petitdemange practices his craft, again from beginning to end. A perfect complement.

Floral Artwork To Bring Blooms Indoors "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Best of Floral Artwork on Design*Sponge

Summer is finally here and the days keep getting warmer and warmer. The flowers and plant life some of us tend outdoors are beaming under the intensity of the sun, while we often retreat to a cool spot indoors. Full of vitamin D and maybe a chilled glass of water, we try our best to not forget about those blooming beauties in our care. Maybe we grab a few snippets, throw them into a bud vase and sprinkle similar displays throughout our homes to add a flair of natural color. There is nothing quite like a fresh bouquet to bring a room to life.

Many of the homes featured here on Design Sponge celebrate floral dcor of all kinds; thoughtful centerpieces, hand painted walls, and patterned wallpaper or textiles. These same spaces often show a penchant for reveling in this beauty year-round with two-dimensional floral artwork spilling onto the walls. It is no surprise that flowers are so often captured and retold through the eyes of artists. Expert and novice alike, this subject is interpreted time and time again throughout history as something special, beautiful and maybe a little mysterious. Below are a few of my favorite spaces from the archives that celebrate framed blooms that wont ever wilt. Bethany

Image Above: Floral designer Anna Potter is no stranger to natural beauty as the founder of Swallows & Damsons, and her Sheffield home is full of quiet moments like this one, captured by India Hobson. Her dreamy bathroom is filled with a lively plant collection and nicknamed The Jungle by her boys. This floral print adds a hint of pink to the green-filled space and echoes the ideas of growth and nature that overtake the small room.

First up is Audrey from Skirt Fixation and as her blog name suggests, she has so many incredible skirt patterns (and just recently released a swim skirt as part of a new swimsuit pattern that I am dying to make ;). Her tagline even reads Changing the world, one skirt at a time! (Dont you love that?)  She is giving away this free pattern for the Bloom & Grow Skirt. It is made with a double border print fabric that looks so fun and the skirt is full and twirly which is just what a little girl wants. Go HERE to grab the pattern! Thank you Audrey for joining our cause this summer.we are so appreciative.

And second joining us from U Create is Becky from her blog Be So Crafty. Becky has been doing a project that is quite amazing and we so admire her for it. Throughout Summer 2017 she is making 100 skirts in 100 days to donate to girls and women ranging from foster care to refugees. She did the same project last summer, so she is up to making and donating over 200 skirts in 2 years. Isnt that amazing? The character is portrayed by British actor Rupert Penry-Jones. The series ran from May 2002 to Oct. 2011. This report is not something thrown together quickly. It is detailed and appears on first blush to be authoritative. It analyzes the file metadata found in a 7zip archive file, 7dc58-ngp-van.7z, originally attributed to the Guccifer 2.0 persona. The report resides at g-2.space/ , or simply search for Guccifer 2.0 Game Over. The report states that according to the metadata attached to the files, the files were transferred on July 5, 2016 starting at 18:39:02 EDT and completed at 18:53:17 EDT at a transfer rate of 23 MB per second. That is an upload speed that was probably impossible over the Internet at the DNC site other than over their private LAN (Local Area Network). In other words, someone had to be in the DNC building to make this copy, and it certainly could not have been done from Russia or Romania, where the famous hacker Guccifer was supposedly located. According to the report: Due to the estimated speed of transfer (23 MB/s) calculated from this study, it is unlikely that this initial data transfer could have been done remotely over the Internet. The initial copying activity was likely done from a computer system that had direct access to the data. By direct access we mean that the individual who was collecting the data either had physical access to the computer where the data was stored, or the data was copied over a local high speed network (LAN). Ascending The Densities of Consciousness "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

(Jeff Street) Authors Note: As always, my articles are simply my perspective that I offer in the spirit of discovery and empowerment take what resonates and leave the rest.

Each thread of consciousness (our souls, over-souls, and beyond), within the One multiversal consciousness, exists in one of eight states. Each of these states of consciousness has a unique set of characteristics, perspectives, and core beliefs that define it. These states have also been called LEVELS because we generally progress through them sequentially. This progression is the evolution of our souls consciousness, and it is the fundamental process that every Soul is undergoing and striving for the process also known as Spiritual Evolution. And it is the primary reason that we incarnate into physical realities like our planet Earth. Physical experiences, and the challenges that they entail offer our souls an evolutionary fast track, and hence are greatly coveted.

Selling Sticks and a Slap in the Face: Artists Intervene in eBay "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Megan Hildebrandt, ANXIETY DISORDER FOR SALE, #exstrange auction (all images courtesy #exstrange)

Editors note: This essay is excerpted from the book #exstrange: a curatorial intervention on eBay, in which seven writers consider critical artistic perspectives on and provocations within the online market.

The sweet dream of a commercial marketplace doubling as a space for community and connection is an old one. We imagine the Ancient Agora of Athens, for instance, as a place where merchants peddled goods and citizens swapped political ideas. Perhaps this was even true.

By comparison, eBay seems more coldly mercantile. Its creation story, which involved the founder wanting to help his fiance trade Pez dispensers with like-minded collectors, has only the flimsiest link to human connection and is in any case a myth invented by publicists. The real goal of eBays inventors was to devise a perfect market, in the pure and uncluttered sense of matching buyers and sellers with zero friction. The Pez yarn may have contributed to somewhat condescending early assessments of eBay as little more than a digital flea market. Today, of course, it is a multinational ecommerce giant, facilitating all manner of transactions in dozens of countries.

But either way, why not take the flea market seriously? The fifth episode of Robert Hughess famous 1980 documentary series The Shock of the New memorably sees the critic striding through one in Paris, bellowing about the Surrealists, who had found inspiration in such settings and their endless profusion of battling objects in the early 20th century. The flea market was like the unconscious mind of capitalism, Hughes booms; artists prowled the sales stalls to mine connections from the seemingly impersonal good...

Israeli Official Urges Regulators to be More Paternalistic Regarding ICOs and Bitcoin "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Israeli Official

An Israeli official gave a talk in Tel Aviv today regarding the challenges with regulating ICOs and bitcoin. Professor Shmuel Hauser, Head of the Israeli Securities Authority, expressed fear and concern about cryptocurrencies. He seemed to see digital tokens as representing a threat, and he urged regulators to be more paternalistic in their oversight of ICOs.

Investors Cannot Look After Themselves and do Not Understand Cryptocurrencies

Hauser elaborated on his position, saying, We have to address today what is happening with bitcoin, blockchain and ICOs that are challenging the current regulation around the world. It is here at the gates of the stock exchange. It is a new economy where the companies have no faces, and the investors have no faces. Our task is to get ready now in a proactive fashion before an event will occur that will hurt Israeli investors.

In this sense, it appears Hauser is attempting to alert regulators of the world to prepare for more digital currencies and ICOs to spread. Hauser suggested many people invest in digital currencies and they do not understand them. He implied they need government protection, because 67% of people cannot look after themselves. Overall, 60% of the public have be...

Save CBD Oil "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

We need to save this powerful pain reliever now. Action Alert!

Without urgent grassroots support, hurting Americans could lose pivotal access to CBD oil, a key natural pain medication. Momentum is building on Capitol Hill, but our voices must be heard.

In recent weeks weve been telling you about recent federal actions that threaten to restrict consumer access to affordable CBD oila derivative of the hemp plant that has no psychoactive properties. Nevertheless, this natural supplement has come into the crosshairs of federal regulatory agencies, and we expect their continued pushback against the movement to maintain access to this vital treatment.

Legislation has recently been introduced that will take some important steps towards preserving CBD products. The Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and Respect States (CARERS) Act, introduced by Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Corey Booker (D-NJ), would allow the possession, production, and distribution of medical marijuana and CBD in the 29 states (not including the District of Columbia) with established marijuana laws.

Importantly, the bill would also exclude CBD from the definition of marijuana. This helps clear up uncertainty and confusion in states where it is legal to possess and use CBD oil but illegal to produce it.

The bill also helps undo the Drug Enforcement Agencys (DEA) recent action to classify CBD (short for cannabidiol) as a Schedule 1 controlled substance like heroin and LSD that has no medicinal benefit. This is an absurd classification, particularly considering the fact that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has a patent on CBD oil that covers its use to protect the brain from degeneration and the treatment of diseases like Alzheimers and Parkinsons. There are also thousands of published scientific studies on CBD and its beneficial health effects on pain, inflammation, seizures, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions.

Beyond the efforts in the Senate, Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA) has introduced the Legitimate Use of Medical Marijuana Act (HR 714) and the Compassionate Access Act (HR 715), both aimed at removing federal obstacles that prevent patient access to CBD as well as medical marijuana. You can see our ...

Metal Siding That Looks Like Real Wood!! "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Hands down the most requested info about my in-laws house is where they sourced the wood-look siding. Its crazy good, even standing right underneath it youd swear it was wood.

Its made by a company called Longboard

They have 20 different colors and wood types. The one we went with was Light National Walnut thought we also really loved the Dark Acacia and the Dark National Walnut.

Its significantly more expensive than real wood but the upside is that it doesnt have any maintenance once its installed. Real wood requires staining and/or clear coating every 4-5-ish years (which is pretty spot on based on our experience with our exterior shutters).

Another advantage is that it looks absolutely perfect. There isnt any warping, kno...

Seven charts show why the IEA thinks coal investment has already peaked "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Global investment in coal-fired power plants is set to decline dramatically after passing an all-time high during the past several years, says the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Thats one of the most striking messages from World Energy Investment 2017, published today. The report, now in its second year, offers a comprehensive picture of energy investment from fossil-fuel extraction through to transport, energy efficiency and power networks.

The IEA report is not only backwards looking, reporting money already invested. It also offers a glimpse of forthcoming trends, by reporting the value of decisions taken to invest in future.

Overall, investment fell again last year, as the oil-and-gas sector continued to cut back in response to low prices. Steady investment in renewables, along with falling costs, saw 50% more capacity being added in 2016 than in 2011. But gains for low-carbon wind and solar are being offset by declines in hydro and nuclear.

Carbon Brief has seven charts with the key messages from this years energy investment report.

Fossil fall

For the second year running, global investment in new energy supplies fell steeply, the IEA report says. This decline was mainly due to the oil-and-gas sector, where investment has fallen 44% in two years on the back of the collapse in oil prices.

These cuts have seen fossil fuels share of investments in new energy supplies fall below 60% for the first time, as the chart below shows.

The man who built a $1 billion firm in his basement "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Will Smale, BBC News:

After a month of working crazy hours, Mr. Rodrigues had come up with his first fully formed idea a software system that allowed the user to control his or her mobile phone from their laptop.

Naming his company Soti, sales of the system started to grow slowly, until 12 months later Mr Rodrigues got a phone call out of the blue from one of the UKs largest supermarket groups.

And:

I dont think they realised that they were talking to just one guy in a basement, so when the person asked to speak to someone in sales I came back on the phone with a slightly different tone.

The little ruse worked, and the UK firm placed a huge order for 20,000 units.

This story is amazing to me, in how he got his start, in the fact that he built this mom and pop operation into a billion dollar enterprise, and in the stealth manner in which he did it. Impressive.

The iPhone killed my inner nerd "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Tom Warren, The Verge, on being a teenage IT manager for his family:

All of our email went through my Exchange server, and I had a custom app that pulled mail from ISP and Hotmail POP3 accounts and filtered it through an assortment of anti-spam tools before it was allowed to hit an Exchange inbox. All of my familys important documents were stored on a file server, backed up in a RAID array. I even used Zip drives for the really important stuff. I was a true IT administrator, and I was only 15.

All of these PCs were built by hand, with custom cases, cooling configurations, and my own selection of processors or RAM. I laughed at the thought of having to buy a Toshiba or Packard Bell PC, and opted for AMDs Athlon 64 processors. Id build powerful gaming rigs and spend hours writing scripts to get a better field of view in games, or a slight advantage by squeezing out every single drop of performance by altering textures per map. I would enter contests and win better processors or RAM, upgrade my PC and push the older components down to my servers.

And:

All of that tinkering and hacking things ended for me shortly after the iPhone arrived, and the closest Ive come to it recently is playing around with a Raspberry Pi and Kodi.

And:

Apples App Store and the iPhone have altered computing massively, beyond my own examples. Nokia, BlackBerry, Microsoft, Motorola, and Palm have all had their businesses disrupted by the iPhone. The iPhones impact has also shaped how we use PCs today, and our expectations of computing in general. Apples iPhone has been on the market for 10 years now, and it hasnt experienced a single instance of a mass malware attack like weve seen twice in the past month on Windows PCs.

Apples locked down and sandboxed environment for apps is a new model that has succeeded with consumers and security. Sure, there have been vulnerabilities, bugs, and near misses, but nobody has been forced to pay $300 to unlock their iPhone after a huge malware attack.

This article resonates for me. I truly miss the days when I could tweak just about every aspect of my devices, from swapping out memory, drives, graphics cards, to building custom cables that enabled third party devices to interface with my rig.

The new reality, of our own making, is a constant state of siege, one that makes the Apple ecosystem a safe port in the constant storm. But I do miss the tweaks and the repairability.

Building a Simple Mining Rig Restarter with Raspberry Pi "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Making your own solution for restarting a mining rig that has frozen is relatively simple for pretty much anyone, you just need a Raspberry Pi board and a couple of 5V relay boards and you can be up and running in no time. You can use the base RPi operating system and with the help of WiringPi you can get easy control of the GPIO pins of the Pi, even direct console one with the GPIO utility. Of course you can install a web server with some basic visual interface as well, simple buttons to drive on/off the relays connected to the GPIO pins of the Pi board.

If you have a spare Raspberry Pi 3 you have up to 28 channels available to drive on/off relays, though based on our experience only 25 of the GPIO puns are actually reliable usable. Pins 2, 3 and 14 have a bit of erratic behavior being in high (triggered state) when the Pi board boots up or temporary switching on and then off when rebooting the board, so it is wise to skip them. Another possible issue is the GPIO pin 0 (the bottom white one) as using zeroes can be tricky when programming something, so be careful with that one as well. We have been using the relays to short the on/off button on the motherboard forcing the mining rig to shut down and then start up again. This works surprisingly well and you avoid the need to work with the high 110V/220V mains power going through the relays that can cause problems for not so experienced users. Our...

Amazon is quietly rolling out its own Alexa Geek Squad "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Jason Del Rey, Recode:

Amazon has quietly been hiring an army of in-house gadget experts to offer free Alexa consultations as well as product installations for a fee inside customer homes, multiple sources told Recode, and job postings confirm.

The new offering, which has already rolled out in seven markets without much fanfare, is aimed at helping customers set up a smart home the industry term used to describe household systems like heating and lighting that can be controlled via apps, and increasingly by voice.

While Amazon has a marketplace for third parties to offer home services like TV mounting and plumbing, these new smart-home-related services seem important enough to Amazon that it is hiring its own in-house experts.

Amazon is focused on expanding Alexas position as the number one home assistant, building out their ecosystem as much as possible before Google builds up any traction and before the real threat, Apple and HomePod, start their assault on Alexas market share.
