Did you know that some colors in the world are too intense for an average consumer computer screen to display? In this 3-minute video by Tom Scott, see how one really intense pink is just too pink for your screen.
Meeting up with artist Stuart Semple, Scott tests out his creation: The Worlds Pinkest Pink. Lo and behold, the color is just so intense that screens cant properly replicate it for you to see, so it appears duller than what youd see with the naked eye.
When an image, or video, reaches your screen, colors are interpreted as a series of numbers that say how bright to make each of the red, green, and blue pixels.
Unless youve got a really fancy, expensive screen, those numbers run from 0 to 255, says Scott. 0 means turn the pixel off, and 255 means make it as bright as it can go.
So with some calculation wizardry, that means your average screen can show around 16 million colors.
But thats not every color, warns Scott. There are colors that are so intense, your screen cant display them pixels cannot go red, green, or blue enough.
You can buy screens with colors running higher than 255, but theyre very expensive. Technology is moving on though, and eventually the Worlds Pinkest Pink may be replicated properly on screen.
So if youve ever photographed a really intense color, and wondered why you cant quite get it to look like how you saw it in real life, then this could be the answer to your problem.

Have you always wanted to try your hand at 810 large format film photography underwater? If you have $5,800 to spend, nows your chance to jump in. An underwater 810 camera has just popped up on eBay that purports to be the first successful underwater 810 ever made.
The seller, based in Florida, writes that the camera is crafted from aircraft aluminum that was welded without warping metal. Everything was designed around a Schneider Super-Symmar 150mm f/5.6 XL Aspheric MC lens with a Copal No. 1 shutter and No. 2 close-up lens by Century Optics. On the side of the camera are two ports for strobe connections.
The dome and rear element were purportedly built by Jim Bailey, a man who created camera systems for the likes of National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and Surfer Magazine.
The system was created for fine art film photography as many serious galleries will not accept digital photography, the seller writes in the listing description. This is the first successful underwater 810 ever made. Produced in 2005.
When being used in fresh water, youll need 60 pounds (~27kg) of dive weights to keep the camera down and give it about 10 pounds of negative buoyancy.
The seller has tips for how to operate the camera as well:
Set focus at five feet underwater (subject to film plane is five feet for tack-sharp resolution), they write. Additionally, the full frame subject coverage on the 810 negative at five feet in front of the film plane is about 6 feet horizontally and about five feet vertically. Depth of field at f11 f16 for tack sharpness is around 3 feet.
If youre interested in snagging this rare camera for yourself, you can get it for $5,800 if you do Buy It Now...

Just twenty minutes from downtown Tampa, in a community called Lutz, sits the home of Becky and Mike Daly, affectionally the subject of their home blog, Daly Digs. After working a government job for ten years, Becky decided to leave that life behind and start documenting the home renovations that she and Mike work on together. After a long and painful closing on their home that left them living out of suitcases and hotel hopping, they started the process of making over their home almost immediately. From replacing boarded up windows to tearing out carpet to replacing all the floors, the home, which had sat vacant for a few years, finally saw new life, courtesy of the Dalys.
The most challenging part of the room was the huge wall of windows.
Working room by room, Becky and Mike got started on the guest bedroom once the living room and dining room were complete. The most challenging part of the room was the huge wall of windows. Not only was it a lot of work to paint all of the trim, it was difficult deciding whether or not to continue the wallpaper to that wall. Ultimately I decided against it since I would have needed to invest in several more rolls of wallpaper, most of which would have been cut out for the windows. Instead, we painted matched the wallpaper and used the custom paint color on the wall of the windows, shared Becky, regarding challenges faces during the guest room renovations.
Before you is the perfect blend of modern meets bohemian, from the light fixtures to the wicker peacock chair, giving us a peek at a truly beautiful transformation. Enjoy! Erin

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Startup company BoxBox debuted their signature product today a subscription box delivered monthly to customers homes, filled entirely with other subscription boxes.
Were very excited about BoxBox, Betsy Leventhal, BoxBox Director of Marketing, said following the reveal. These days, it seems like theres a million subscription boxes to choose from; the market is downright saturated. Were glad to add another one to the pile: one thats at once different, while simultaneously remaining exactly the same.
Boxes featured in BoxBox include Birchbox, Boxwalla, Allure Beauty Box, and FighterBox the latter dedicated to active mens underwear; namely, boxer shorts and boxer briefs designed for amateur boxers.
It sounds very convenient, said Taylor Curtis, who pre-ordered BoxBox last month. For my first month, Ill get Bulubox, Glossybox, and Barkbox. Barkbox is great because its full of stuff for dogs. Annabel, my red fawn boxer, is going to love it.
Though BoxBoxs selection is limited at rollout, Leventhal assured potential customers the selection would expand monthly, including some BoxBox exclusives found in no other boxes. Thats the beauty of BoxBox: you never know what new boxes might pop up, she said. Were working with the developers of Blue Apron on a couple new boxes, including one dedicated entirely to cured salmon the Lox Box. It comes with bagels and everything.
Critics argue the sheer amount of packaging in the service is detrimental to the environment.
If just one person in an apartment building orders a premium BoxBox, they will have enough cardboard waste to fill an entire dumpster, said anti-consumerism activist Mark Schumer. Do you really need an box of still-sealed Spiderman merchandise and a box of a variety of boxed wine shipped at the same time?
Leventhal believes the early excitement behind the company is just the beginning, and plans to ramp up the companys online presence.

Nari Ward, Scapegoat (2017) steel, wood, tire tread, concrete, fire hose, 40 x 12 x 12 feet
I needed to look up the term lawn ornament. That is to say, the concept is somewhat foreign to me: the need to add decorative structures to enhance or beautify a natural setting. According to the Gardening Know How website, Wisely placed lawn ornaments in the landscape can create a sense of elegance and warmth. What this actually means is they exist to create a sense that the lawn, garden, or park is under conscious human management, that it is cultivated and controlled. We see mastery in the well-placed garden gnome that looks like an elf caught with his trousers down, peeing in a corner and looking over his shoulder impishly, or the heavily anthropomorphized deer looking up with warm, doey eyes. This seems like a particularly US phenomenon, to manicure whatever isnt nailed down, in order to, (again from Gardening Know How) enhance your life and bring you joy. What else is that urge about besides fear and the desire to exert mastery?
With his commission to create public art for the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, Nari Ward takes the lawn ornament in other directions, to some odd, hallucinatory places. The structures he created include other versions of the outdoor structure: the advertising sign, the monument, and so makes this small swath of public park space a test bed for Wards ideas about intervening in natural settings with things that dont quite belong, dont fit, and make the landscape a place to explore rather than dominate. His ornaments are goats, ostensibly playing on the acronym for Greatest Of All Time a meme thats been circulating in YouTube videos and Twitter hashtags for years. The idea of greatness gets echoed in the huge electrical sign spelling out Apollo, which alludes to the Greek and Roman god associated with truth and prophecy, sun and light...

At the beginning of this year I have quit consulting and set out to build GO2CINEMAFast, simple and secure way to book cinema tickets in the UK. I have done a splendid job making it fast, simple and secure. Somewhere along the way, Ive gotten obsessed with the critical rendering path optimization .
I have solved pre-rendering of the HTML using sus. sus renders HTML of single page applications (SPA) and inlines the CSS used to render the page. However, I did not like inlining 70 KB into every HTML document, esp. most of it being the CSS class names.
Have you ever peeked into the source code of https://www.google.com/? The first thing you will notice is that the CSS class names are no more than a couple of characters long.google.com HTML
There is one thing a minifier cannot do change the selector names. This is because a CSS minifier does not control the HTML output. Meanwhile, CSS names can get long.
If you are using CSS modules, your CSS modules are likely going to include stylesheet file name, local identifier name and a random hash. The class name template is described using css-loader localIdentName configuration, e.g. [name]___[local]___[hash:base64:5]. Therefore, a generated class name will look something like this .MovieView___movie-title___yvKVV ; if you like descriptive names, it can get a lot longer, e.g .MovieView___movie-description-with-summary-paragraph___yvKVV .
However, if you are using webpack and babel-plugin-react-css-modules, you are in luck you can rename class names at the compilation time using css-loader getLocalIdent configuration and the equivalent babel-plugin-react-css-modules generateScopedName configuration.https://medium.com/media/a8c7a67872e39ad4e79d12246968f147/href

PMID: PLoS One. 2012 ;7(9):e44524. Epub 2012 Sep 5. PMID: 22957077 Abstract Title: Pterostilbene-induced tumor cytotoxicity: a lysosomal membrane permeabilization-dependent mechanism. Abstract: The phenolic phytoalexin resveratrol is well known for its health-promoting and anticancer properties. Its potential benefits are, however, limited due to its low bioavailability. Pterostilbene, a natural dimethoxylated analog of resveratrol, presents higher anticancer activity than resveratrol. The mechanisms by which this polyphenol acts against cancer cells are, however, unclear. Here, we show that pterostilbene effectively inhibits cancer cell growth and stimulates apoptosis and autophagosome accumulation in cancer cells of various origins. However, these mechanisms are not determinant in cell demise. Pterostilbene promotes cancer cell death via a mechanism involving lysosomal membrane permeabilization. Different grades of susceptibility were observed among the different cancer cells depending on their lysosomal heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) content, a known stabilizer of lysosomal membranes. A375 melanoma and A549 lung cancer cells with low levels of HSP70 showed high susceptibility to pterostilbene, whereas HT29 colon and MCF7 breast cancer cells with higher levels of HSP70 were more resistant. Inhibition of HSP70 expression increased susceptibility of HT29 colon and MCF7 breast cancer cells to pterostilbene. Our data indicate that lysosomal membrane permeabilization is the main cell death pathway triggered by pterostilbene.

Want to try out product photography but cant afford a softbox? They can be expensive pieces of kit, but invisible ones cost a lot less. In this 6-minute video by Leo Rosas, learn how to use a cheap tube light as a makeshift softbox.
Sounds strange? Just shoot a long exposure and move the tube light along, light painting your subject, in the same plane the surface of a softbox would be.
The result? Well, see for yourself:
Even trickier-to-photograph wine bottles work too, and you get the same white reflection that you would from a soft box:
This video aims to inspire and motivate you to go a learn more about light and its effect on subjects, Rosas tells Petapixel. Especially if you are a beginner or simply you still dont own studio lighting and modifiers such as the very popular soft box.
With this trick, you are light painting the subject. Think about the direction youre moving, and even add a transparent sheet in front of the tube light to diffuse the light.
Besides this being a resourceful option, it only intends to show a cheap option and Im not suggesting that this can offer the same results that professional photographic gear can, continued Rosas. If you are serious about your photography you should definitely invest on good quality tools and flash systems are no exception to this.

Vaccine scientists and the public health community cautiously and occasionally will admit that vaccines can cause adverse reactions just like any other medication or biological product. Although experts are less willing to openly disclose the fact that adverse reactions can and do include death, one has only to look at reports to the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) to see that mortality is a possible outcome. From 1990 through 2010, for example, VAERS received 1,881 reports of infant deaths following vaccination, representing 4.8% of the adverse events reported for infants over the 20-year period.
Moreover, analysts acknowledge that VAERS, as a passive surveillance system, is subject to substantial underreporting. A federal government report from 2010 affirms that VAERS captures only about 1% of vaccine adverse reports.
On the international frontier, the public health communitywith the World Health Organization (WHO) in the vanguardpreviously used a six-category framework to investigate and categorize serious adverse events following immunization (AEFI), including death. Guided by this tool, public health teams examined temporal criteria and possible alternative explanations to determine whether the relationship of an AEFI to vaccine administration was very likely/certain, probable, possible, unlikely, unrelated, or unclassifiable.
I was committed to burning my property. I know this sounds a bit crazy but were talking about a prescribed burn. My wife researched programs in our area for homeowners to reduce fire hazard. In our area the firefighters are cross-trained for both wildland and structure fires so they are perfectly qualified to do prescribed burns on a residential property.
After getting an assessment we got rid of all the pine needles dropped by the numerous ponderosa in proximity to the house and studio. The fire crew dug a containment line around the perimeter of our property. Then they trimmed low hanging branches and small trees that could be potential ladder fuels Then we waited for the right weather and time to burn.My wife, Barb, is also a fire ecologist and participated in initiating the prescribed burn in autumn. Using a drip torch like this, the burn crew strategically places fire based on wind and weather conditions. Nikon D800E with Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f4 G ED VR at 70mm, 1/160, f8.0
I live in the WUI (pronounced woo-ee). That stands for wildland-urban interface. The upside is Im in the woods and mountains with beautiful views; surroundings that motivate me creatively, its quiet, and I see lots of wildlife. The downside is Im in the woods, which means potential danger from wildland fires. Exacerbating that danger is that I also happen to be in northern Arizona, where wildland fires are not uncommon.
Ive seen smoke plumes and hazy skies from forest fires many times but they are usually far off. However, a few years ago a young man, despondent over his girlfriend, decided to light a dozen fires in the forest near my house and studio. My wife happens to be a fire ecologist and although we were away at the time, one of her colleagues that manages a wildland fire crew called us to let us know there was a fire in our area. We drove home, got our dogs, and packed up a few irreplaceable items while coughing from smoke.
It sounded like we were in an air raid with planes flying right over our heads dropping fire retardant. Then the sheriff knocked on the door and told us to get out of there. We stayed at my mothers house trying to get updates on the progress of the firefighters. Finally in the early evening we breathed a big sigh of relief when a neighbor called and said it was OK to come back to our homes.
Thankfully, the fire crews did a spectacular job safely containing the fires....
PMID: Biochem Cell Biol. 2015 Feb ;93(1):16-27. Epub 2014 Sep 12. PMID: 25453494 Abstract Title: Inhibitory effects of kaempferol on the invasion of human breast carcinoma cells by downregulating the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase-9. Abstract: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been regarded as major critical molecules assisting tumor cells during metastasis, for excessive ECM (ECM) degradation, and cancer cell invasion. In the present study, in vitro and in vivo assays were employed to examine the inhibitory effects of kaempferol, a natural polyphenol of flavonoid family, on tumor metastasis. Data showed that kaempferol could inhibit adhesion, migration, and invasion of MDA-MB-231 human breast carcinoma cells. Moreover, kaempferol led to the reduced activity and expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, which were detected by gelatin zymography, real-time PCR, and western blot analysis, respectively. Further elucidation of the mechanism revealed that kaempferol treatment inhibited the activation of transcription factor activator protein-1 (AP-1) and MAPK signaling pathway. Moreover, kaempferol repressed phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-induced MMP-9 expression and activity through suppressing the translocation of protein kinase C (PKC) and MAPK signaling pathway. Our results also indicated that kaempferol could block the lung metastasis of B16F10 murine melanoma cells as well as the expression of MMP-9 in vivo. Taken together, these results demonstrated that kaempferol could inhibit cancer cell invasion through blockingthe PKC/MAPK/AP-1 cascade and subsequent MMP-9 expression and its activity. Therefore, kaempferol might act as a therapeutic potential candidate for cancer metastasis.

PMID: PLoS One. 2013 ;8(12):e81122. Epub 2013 Dec 12. PMID: 24349037 Abstract Title: Curcumin intake affects miRNA signature in murine melanoma with mmu-miR-205-5p most significantly altered. Abstract: Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer with estimated 48,000 deaths per year worldwide. The polyphenol curcumin derived from the plant Curcuma longa is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerogenic properties. Accordingly, dietary intake of this compound may be suitable for melanoma prevention. However, how this compound affects basic cellular mechanisms in developing melanoma still remains elusive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate for the first time the impact of oral curcumin administration on the miRNA signature of engrafting melanoma. For this purpose, the effects of a 4% curcumin diet were tested on melanoma, which were established by injection of murine B78H1 cells in the flank of C57BL/6 mice. Curcumin diet or standard chow (control) was administered two weeks prior to injection of tumor cells until termination of the experiment. High throughput chip-based array analysis was deployed to detect alterations in the miRNA signature of the tumors. Curcumin treatment significantly reduced the growth of the flank tumors. Furthermore the miRNA expression signature in tumors was substantially altered by curcumin intake with mmu-miR-205-5p over 100 times higher expressed when compared to controls. The expression levels of identified key miRNAs in the tumor samples were confirmed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). A comparable expression pattern of these miRNAs was also detected in other curcumin-treated melanoma cell lines under in vitro conditions. Putative targets of curcumin-induced up-regulated miRNAs were enriched in 'o-glycan biosynthesis', 'endoplasmatic reticulum protein processing' and different cancer-related pathways. Western Blot analyses revealed that of these targets anti-apoptotic B-cell CLL/lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were significantly down-regulated in curcumin-treated tumors. These findings demonstrate a profound alteration of the miRNA expression signature in engrafting curcumin-treated melanoma with mmu-miR-205-5p being up-regulated most significantly.

PMID: 25230992 Abstract Title: Tumour growth inhibition and anti-angiogenic effects using curcumin correspond to combined PDE2 and PDE4 inhibition. Abstract: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a major role in angiogenesis by stimulating endothelial cells. Increase in cyclic AMP (cAMP) level inhibits VEGF-induced endothelial cell proliferation and migration. Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs), which specifically hydrolyse cyclic nucleotides, are critical in the regulation of this signal transduction. We have previously reported that PDE2 and PDE4 up-regulations in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) are implicated in VEGF-induced angiogenesis and that inhibition of PDE2 and PDE4 activities prevents the development of the in vitro angiogenesis by increasing cAMP level, as well as the in vivo chicken embryo angiogenesis. We have also shown that polyphenols are able to inhibit PDEs. The curcumin having anti-cancer properties, the present study investigated whether PDE2 and PDE4 inhibitors and curcumin could have similar in vivo anti-tumour properties and whether the anti-angiogenic effects of curcumin are mediated by PDEs. Both PDE2/PDE4 inhibitor association and curcumin significantly inhibited in vivo tumour growth in C57BL/6N mice. In vitro, curcumin inhibited basal and VEGF-stimulated HUVEC proliferation and migration and delayed cell cycle progression at G0/G1, similarly to the combination of selective PDE2 and PDE4 inhibitors. cAMP levels in HUVECs were significantly increased by curcumin, similarly to rolipram (PDE4 inhibitor) and BAY-60-550 (PDE2 inhibitor) association, indicating cAMP-PDE inhibitions. Moreover, curcumin was able to inhibit VEGF-induced cAMP-PDE activity without acting on cGMP-PDE activity and to modulate PDE2 and PDE4 expressions in HUVECs. The present results suggest that curcumin exerts its in vitro anti-angiogenic and in vivo anti-tumour properties through combined PDE2 and PDE4 inhibition.

Hate the high-pitched buzzing of camera drones? Youre not alone. A new study published by NASA has found that people find drone founds more annoying than any ground vehicle, even when the sounds are heard at the same volume.
NASA found 38 subjects and ask them to listen to sounds related to the future of transportation. Some of the sounds were recordings of drones (including the DJI Phantom 2) and others were the sounds of ground vehicles ranging from the consumer Subaru Impreza Sport hatchback to diesel truck.
What the scientists found was that the extra annoyance levels of drone sounds were the equivalent of cars being twice as close as they were before.
Initial analysis of the data from this test indicates that there may be a systematic difference between the annoyance response generated by the noise of the sUAS [Small Unmanned Aircraft System] and the road vehicles included in this study, NASA concludes. This result casts doubt on the idea that sUAS operators can expect their operations to be greeted with minimal noise-based opposition as long as the sound of their systems are no louder than conventional package delivery solutions.
We didnt go into this test thinking there would be this significant difference, says study coauthor Andrew Christian.
So for drones to be less annoying to the public than cars on the road, drone manufacturers may need to find a way to make them much more quiet.

Last night, the Appropriations Committee of the US House of Representatives approved the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2018, earmarking $145 million each for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). While this represents potential cuts of nearly $5 million compared to the $149,849,000 both agencies received for FY2017, its also a far cry from the complete de-funding called for by President Trump in his proposed federal budget for next year.
The Appropriations Committees budget would additionally slash federal funding for the Smithsonian Institution by nearly $13 million, from $729.4 million in FY2017 to $716.6 million next year. The Committee is also proposing to maintain funding for the National Gallery of Art at last years level, just under $133 million.
The Appropriations Committee approved the $31.4 billion spending package which, in addition to the NEA, NEH, NGA, and Smithsonian, covers everything from Environmental Protection Agency funding to money for fighting forest fires on land controlled by the Department of the Interior by a margin of 30 votes to 21. Overall it represents a drop in appropriations of $824 million compared to the 2017 bill, a huge cut that nevertheless is a far cry from the $4.3 billion in cuts Trump called for in his proposed budget.
The appropriations bill now must be debated, amended, and approved by the US Senate, whose federal budget proposal for FY2018 isnt likely to take shape until after Labor Day.
Despite the funding cuts proposed by the Appro...
Rodolpho Lancianis photo capturing the discovery of the bronze statue of the Boxer (1885) (all images Istituto Nazionale di Archeologia e Storia dellArte)
In 1885, excavations at Romes Quirinal Hill revealed one of the most celebrated Hellenistic Greek sculptures: the bronze, seated Boxer at Rest. Present was the archaeologist Rodolpho Lanciani, who witnessed its exhumation and snapped a photograph of the rare ancient object. The image he produced is as arresting as the sculpture itself, capturing the figure perched on a mound of dirt, like a time traveler taking in the ruins of a once-familiar world. Its one of many photographs Lanciania captured of his citys changing landscape, and its just one gem from his own, massive archives amassed as his impressive effort to document Romes entire archaeological history through the end of the 19th century....
PMID: Genes Cancer. 2015 Jan ;6(1-2):49-61. PMID: 25821561 Abstract Title: Polyphenols from green tea inhibit the growth of melanoma cells through inhibition of class I histone deacetylases and induction of DNA damage. Abstract: Melanoma is the leading cause of skin cancer-related deaths. We have examined the effect of green tea polyphenols (GTPs), a natural mixture of epicatechin monomers, on melanoma cancer cell growth and the molecular mechanism underlying these effects using different human melanoma cell lines as an in vitro model. Treatment of melanoma cell lines (A375, Hs294t, SK-Mel28 and SK-Mel119) with GTPs significantly inhibited the cell viability as well as colony formation ability of melanoma cells in a dose-dependent manner. These effects of GTPs were associated with a significant inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity, reduction in the levels of class I HDAC proteins, enhancement of histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity and induction of DNA damage, as detected by Comet assay, in melanoma cells. GTPs-induced decrease in the levels of class I HDAC proteins is mediated through proteasomal degradation. Valproic acid, an inhibitor of HDACs, exhibited a similar pattern of reduced viability and induction of death of melanoma cells. Treatment of A375 and Hs294t cells with GTPs resulted in a decrease in the levels of cyclins and cyclin dependent kinases of G1 phase of cell cycle whereas upregulated the levels of tumor suppressor proteins (Cip1/WAF1/p21, p16 and p53).

PMID: Environ Res. 2017 Jul 14 ;158:566-575. Epub 2017 Jul 14. PMID: 28715785 Abstract Title: Prenatal exposure estimation of BPA and DEHP using integrated external and internal dosimetry: A case study. Abstract: Prenatal exposure to Endocrine disruptors (EDs), such as Bisphenol A (BPA) and di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), has been associated with obesity and diabetes diseases in childhood, as well as reproductive, behavioral and neurodevelopment problems. The aim of this study was to estimate the prenatal exposure to BPA and DEHP through food consumption for pregnant women living in Tarragona County (Spain). Probabilistic calculations of prenatal exposure were estimated by integrated external and internal dosimetry modelling, physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model, using a Monte-Carlo simulation. Physical characteristic data from the cohort, along with food intake information from the questionnaires (concentrations of BPA and DEHP in different food categories and the range of the different food ratios), were used to estimate the value of the total dietary intake for the Tarragona pregnancy cohort. The major contributors to the total dietary intake of BPA were canned fruits and vegetables, followed by canned meat and meat products. In turn, milk and dairy products, followed by ready to eat food (including canned dinners), were the most important contributors to the total dietary intake of DEHP. Despite the dietary variations among the participants, the intakes of both chemicals were considerably lower than their respective current tolerable daily intake (TDI) values established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Internal dosimetry estimates suggest that the plasma concentrations of free BPA and the most important DEHP metabolite, mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), in pregnant women were characterized by transient peaks (associated with meals) and short half-lives (

No-fly zones are increasing, regulations are tightening, and the situations where you can actually fly a drone in public spaces are dwindling. No bother just use your smartphone and a really, really long selfie stick instead.
In this 2-minute video from Chung Dha, he runs through his setup for taking aerial shots from a drones perspective without a drone.
By using a 5-meter-long (~16.4ft) boom pole, coupled with a stabilizing gimbal, his shots really do look like the real thing.
Combine the pole with moving yourself forward, as well as tilting the pole between different angles, and you have yourself a pretty natural drone movement.
But you might have to cope with some strange looks.
If you havent heard of Hugo Gernsback, youve surely heard of the Hugo Award. Next to the Nebula, its the most prestigious of science fiction prizes, bringing together in its ranks of winners such venerable authors as Ursula K. Le Guin, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Neil Gaiman, Isaac Asimov, and just about every other sci-fi and fantasy luminary you could think of. It is indeed fitting that such an honor should be named for Gernsback, the Luxembourgian-American inventor who, in April of 1926, began publishing the first and longest-running English-language magazine dedicated to what was then not quite yet called science fiction, notes University of Virginias Andrew Ferguson at The Pulp Magazines Project. Amazing Stories provided an exclusive outlet for what Gernsback first called scientifiction, a genre he would for better and for worse, define for the modern era. You can read and download hundreds of Amazing Stories issues, from the first year of its publication to the last, at the Internet Archive.
Boris Johnson is to join the cast of Love Island, following a joint announcement from ITV and 10 Downing Street. The Foreign Secretary proclaimed his excitement at the prospect of being let loose amongst what he called a bunch of boobyswaddled slagamuffins and was jolly chizzawuzzled that it was a genuine island, thus limiting avenues of escapes for the eligible young ladies.
He lamented the lack of live sex in the Parliamentary TV coverage, suggesting politics would be more appealing to the young if Westminster followed the Love Island format more closely. This would mean all female MPs to wear bikinis at all times, and all male MPs would be required by statute to have full sleeve and neck tattoos, and come from either Essex or Newcastle.
Betting firms reacted to the news of Johnsons imminent arrival on Love Island by immediately installing him as 3/1 favourite to win the Margarita sculling challenge, 300/1 outsider to actually cop off with any of the sexy young ladies and even money favourite to be lynched after just two days by his fellow Love Islanders in a primitive Lord of the Flies style ceremony of natural justice.

Weve seen that brass lighting is a trend with staying power, but theres another metallic tone thats stealing the show for its versatility and aesthetic appeal in design. Copper and rose gold light fixtures possess an influence thats twofold: 1.) the color is striking and eye-catching, making it perfect for rooms where lighting needs to be the focal point, and 2.) Its rosy/warm hue matches or complements many popular design materials (namely wood or anything white).
If youre intrigued by this material but unsure of its longevity, Id wager that copper and rose gold metallics in lighting specifically will stick around for a while. To help paint a picture of the ways this metallic can be used in lighting, weve rounded up some of our favorite examples from past home tours. Kelli

Urinary Tract Infections Medics in survival scenarios have to deal with major injuries and serious infections, Sometimes, infections arent serious to begin with, but worsen if not treated. Some of these infections involve the urinary tract. Urine directly from the bladder is generally sterile, but most women have experienced a urinary tract infection (UTI) at one point or another. The areas most commonly contaminated are the bladder, which holds the urine, and the urethra, the tube that drains the bladder.

PMID: Mutat Res. 2017 Mar ;815:1-5. Epub 2017 Jan 11. PMID: 28283087 Abstract Title: Bisdemethoxycurcumin enhances X-ray-induced apoptosis possibly through p53/Bcl-2 pathway. Abstract: Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC), which is isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, has anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic activities. Here we found that BDMC enhanced X-ray-induced apoptosis in human T-cell leukemia MOLT-4 cells. Knockdown of p53 significantly attenuated the radiosensitizing effect of BDMC. However, BDMC did not enhance X-ray-mediated activation of the p53 signaling pathway via p53's transactivation or mitochondrial translocation. On the other hand, BDMC promoted the X-ray-induced dephosphorylation at Ser 70 in Bcl-2's flexible loop regulatory domain and Bcl-2 binding to p53. Overexpressing Bcl-2 completely blocked the BDMC's radiosensitization effect. Our results indicate that BDMC stimulates the dephosphorylation and p53-binding activity of Bcl-2 and suggest that BDMC may induce a neutralization of Bcl-2's anti-apoptotic function, thereby enhancing X-ray-induced apoptosis.

COLOGNE There is a sameness that plagues museums around the world today: A small group of canonized artists are exhibited under standardized rubrics within similarly grandiose architecture, separated into antiquity, renaissance, modern, and contemporary. The opposite is true at Kolumba, the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne, where new and old works are exhibited alongside each other to create a deeply introspective, multi-temporal space curated for the purpose of contemplation. In building and maintaining the museum, an inherently religious institution, the archdiocese sought to inspire faith in visitors who are unlikely to visit the church. Awe-inspiring and spiritual to be sure thought not necessarily godly Kolumba is a sort of post-religious space for worship.
The space itself is part of the exhibition Me in a no-time state, composed from the archdioceses permanent collection, which is reimagined every year with new curatorial proposals. Ruins excavated in Cologne date back to Roman times; its upon these that the St. Kolumba Church was constructed during the Middle Ages. It survived until World War II, when it was almost completely destroyed along with the rest of Cologne. Today the ruins are preserved and incorporated into the building by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor....
When photographer, artist, and filmmaker Troy Moth followed his heart, moving back to his birthplace of Vancouver Island and leaving behind a hot career as a fashion photographer in Toronto, he didn't do so alone. His trusty companion Nikita, a rescue dog, was by his side.
Since adopting the pup four years ago, Nikita has grown from a frightful dog cowering in her urine-covered crate to an adventurous creature living her best life. And while the transformation from who Nikita was to who she is today was not easy, it's had a profound impact on her owner's life. So much so that she has a starring role as muse in many of his photographs.
During her first few days with Moth, she would cower in fear every time he approached and it took months to build trust between the rescue dog and her new owner. It was seeing this fear in the beginning that made Moth vow never to place her in a crate again, and since that time they've traveled across North America together in search of adventure.
She has taught me more about the simple joys in life, which really are the most important, Moth writes us via email. To this day, watching her run free in the forest, jumping off rocks or walking across fallen logs warms my heart more than anything.
As she gradually opened up to new people and experiences, she's become bolder, tracking deer in the woods and tussling with a skunkwhich was all fun until it sprayed her. She's made canine friends and has gotten a chance to speed across a frozen lake, running free in a way that wasn't possible before she landed in Moth's life.
Nikita's story is just one more reason to consider adoption if you are looking for a pet. As Moth reminds us, your best bud may already exist and is waiting for some adventure.

A report examining Bitcoin Unlimiteds claims about consensus says it invalidates both its major statements.
Over the past two centuries, the times of day, locations and methods of measuring temperature have all changed dramatically. For example, where once researchers lowered buckets over the side of ships to collect water for measuring, we now have a global network of automated buoys floating around the oceans measuring the water directly.
This complicates matters for scientists putting together a long-term, consistent estimate of how global temperatures are changing. Scientists must adjust the raw data to take into account all the differences in how, when and where measurements were taken.
These adjustments have long been a heated point of debate. Many climate sceptics like to argue that scientists exaggerate warming by lowering past temperatures and raising present ones.
Christopher Booker, a climate sceptic writing in the Sunday Telegraph in 2015, called them the greatest scientific scandal in history. A new report from the rightwing US thinktank, the Cato Institute, even claims that adjustments account for nearly all the warming in the historical record.
But analysis by Carbon Brief comparing raw global temperature records to the adjusted data finds that the truth is much more mundane: adjustments have relatively little impact on global temperatures, particularly over the past 50 years.
In fact, over the full period when measurements are available, adjustments actually have the net effect of reducing the amount of long-term warming that world has experienced.
Land and ocean temperatures are adjusted separately to correct for changes to measurement methods over time. All the original temperature readings from both land-based weather stations and ocean-going ships and buoys are publically available and can be used to create a raw global temperature record.
The figure below shows the global surface temperature record created from only raw temperature readings with no adjustments applied (blue line). The red line is the adjusted land and ocean temperature record produced using adjusted data from the US...

Senators from the Australian Greens will be stamped with their country of origin from next week, to help them remember where they come from.
The Greens who have been strong supporters of country of origin labelling for years will finally get their wish, with mandatory C of O information identified in large print on all current and future senators.
Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the label will be clearly visible whenever a Greens Senator looks in the mirror. Itll hopefully mean we can identify any issues early, he said, stopping to take a call from another resigning senator.
Mr Di Natale said he would hold a meeting today to discuss the details of the program with remaining Greens senators. Both are expected to attend.

One of those advocates, STEPHEN WELLS, says we can no longer afford to ignore the devastating impact of animal agriculture
Thank goodness Im not a millennial. They cant even watch Sex and the City and simply appreciate a witty ode to female friendship. No, instead binge-watching repeats of a Clinton- and Bush-era show must prompt an accounting of which characters are good feminists, as in Marie Claires recent article, Charlotte York is Anti-Feminist, and Weve Outgrown Her.
Of course, Im likely not the intended audience for this article, as according to The Washington Post, Im certainly not a feminist. I believe in equality between the sexes, and that I am the product of my choices, including the choice to prioritize my children over my career at this stage in my life. I also choose not to identify as a feminist because I find litmus tests off-putting.
All four central characters on Sex and the City would have identified as feminists during the shows run, a key component of fairly evaluating characters from other eras. However, Marie Claire rejects that assessment. Writer Leah Thomas disdain for Charlotte York, a character she deems cringe-worthy, is striking: [Charlotte] is dependent, helpless, and an avid slut-shamer. I beg to differ.
First, Charlotte lives independently and supports herself financially while shes single, which is not true for all millennials. In May, Pew reported: As of 2016, 15% of 25- to 35-year-old millennials were living in their parents home. This is 5 percentage points higher than the share of Generation Xers who lived in their parents home in 2000 when they were the same age (10%). Charlotte is also not dependent in an emotional sense; she has mutually supportive friendships with the shows three other leading ladies (and her wedding planner), in between her pursuit of a healthy marriage.
Second, theres no better example of Charlottes refusal to be the victim of her circumstances than her response to her fertility challenges. For Charlotte, who yearns to be a mother, that includes daily hormone injections (which first husband Trey resents) and researching adoption (which Treys mother vehemently opposes).
Finally, Charlotte is overwhelmingly supportive of her friends and their romantic choices. If Charlotte were indeed a slut-shamer, its hard to believe Samantha would spend so much time with her.
Lets also note that Charlotte and Samantha represent fundamentally different ideas about sex and relationships...

YouTube journalist Lewis Spears identifies that these anti-vaccine advocates always have a medical expert on hand to corroborate their claims. However, doctors seemed to be vastly underrepresented in Melbourne as Lewis embarked on a mission to track them down at the rally.
He adds in his monologue before footage of the rally starts, that one would think that perhaps one of these medical experts would be on hand at such a large event.
Lewis patrols the crowd inquiring as to whether any of the attendees are in fact medically certified. One gentleman makes an impassioned speech outlining that he is there to raise awareness to people that are misinformed when there is no evidence to suggest that vaccines are safe or effective. Others ask rhetorically why there would be a doctor at an anti-vaccine rally which really just reaffirms the aim of Lewis experiment.
When he asks the crowd at large if there are any doctors present, not only do none present themselves, but he is abused by the crowd.
Vaccine advocate and ridiculously clever unit, Dr Ben Goldacre claims that there is little linking what makes good journalism and what is scientific fact. The head of Bad Science also claims that the story linking the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine to Autism was never originally founded in a solid scientific hypothesis, rather in an isolated study that gave a conflicting view on the subject. Many other less interesting papers that gave predictable results were ignored. This, however, was enough to spark a worldwide anti-vaccine movement.

Just 12 days before Christmas 1977, in the same building as this very radio station Paddington Town Hall a band known as Radio Birdman played a show that would go down in history books. Not only was it to be their final Sydney show before they broke-up in London just six ugly months later, the Paddington gig was also noteworthy for the 2000 or so fans who packed the hall and then trashed it. Whether they really trashed it is a moot point, but there were bloodied handprints on the walls and things certainly turned a bit more frenzied than usual. Hard to imagine that happening in Paddington today, where cashed-up residents would have invoked the lock-out law spirit at the first sight of an amp being wheeled into the building mid-afternoon for soundcheck.
The above story is just one in a new documentary about Radio Birdman by Sydney filmmaker Jonathan Sequeira, called Descent Into The Maelstrom. Others stories detail band factions/frictions and a tour Kombi known as The Van Of Hate, as well as their halcyon days down the road from Paddington Town Hall at the Funhouse (Oxford Hotel) where crazy-good times eventually turned into painfully sobering ones when the Hells Angels beat up a band member. At The Funhouse, eclectic crowds made up of Oxford Street queers, queerly dancing rockers and everyone in between, enjoyed the same dance floor space. The only rule for entry: No trendies. The main reason to be there? To see one of Radio Birdmans legendary full-throttle performances.
With Descent Into The Maelstrom opening in cinemas across Australia this month, Eastside Radio caught up with director Jonathan Sequeira to ask him a few questions.

Beverly Buchanan: Low Country, at David Klein Gallery in Detroit, installation view (all photos by the author for Hyperallergic)
DETROIT Due in part to its protracted economic siege state, for many decades, Detroit sat largely outside the realm of art world conversations. Aside from the Cass Corridor artists of the early 1970s, there has not been a major contemporary art movement to emerge from Detroit. As an outsider place, it has long been a landscape both literally and figuratively shaped by the work of outsider artists (this despite being home to Michigans only dedicated undergraduate art school, the College for Creative Studies).
Perhaps for this reason, the work of Beverly Buchanan feels like a perfectly natural fit for Detroit. A small retrospective of her shack sculptures and drawings, Beverly Buchanan: Low Country, is on view at David Klein Gallery downtown, and the aesthetics feel right at home with those of landmark Detroit artists like Olayami Dabls and Tyree Guyton, painters like Jide Aje and Gilda Snowden, and the wood constructions of artist John Egner. Buchanans evocative little constructions and childlike pastel drawings are alive with the same kind of color and wabi-sabi principles that inspired a whole category of practicing artists in Detroit....

In outlawing gluten-free bread for Holy Communion, the Bishop of Rome has decreed that an intolerance to wheat is a clear sign of witchery and being unnecessarily fussy about doughnuts. Pope Francis told his assembled cardinals that roasted plantain chips were the work of the devil and that all babies should be baptized in a vat of Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, rolled in flour and cooked in a traditional clay oven.
Remarked one priest: Everyone knows that the body of Christ had a distinctly wheat-like flavour. What next, hmmm? Communion wine replaced with Ribena? Some say we should be tolerant of those with a lifelong autoimmune condition but I say lets burn them in corn-based wicker man!
The Vatican has long held strict rules on diet, stemming from Jesus own adherence to the Atkins diet avoiding carbs every 40 days and 40 nights. One medieval crusade saw half the population of Jerusalem crucified for an immoral penchant for hummus and sodomy.
Of course, such a ruling could lead to a schism in the Church, similar to when protestant Henry VIII gave up dairy on the advice of his personal trainer. One Bishop whose tolerance was wafer thin, said: The bread itself is converted to the body and blood of Christ through transubstantiation thats also how we make sausages.
Whatever else we take from it, Franz Kafkas nightmarish fable The Metamorphosis offers readers an especially anguished allegory on troubled sleep. Filled with references to sleep, dreams, and beds, the story begins when Gregor Samsa awakens to find himself (in David Wylies translation) transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. After several desperate attempts to roll off his back, Gregor begins to agonize, of all things, over his stressful working hours: Getting up early all the time, he thought, it makes you stupid. Youve got to get enough sleep. Realizing that he has overslept and missed his five oclock train, he agonizes anew over the frantic workday ahead, and we can hear in his thoughts the complaints of their author. Sleep and lack thereof, writes The Independents Christopher Hooten, is of course a central theme in Kafkas best known work. It seems there was a strong dose of autobiography at play.
Chronically insomniac, Kafka wrote at night, then rose early each morning for his hated job at an insurance office. Though he made good use of restlessness, Kafka characterized his insomnia as much more than an inconvenient physical ailment. He thought of it in metaphysical terms, as a kind of soul-sickness. Sleep, he wrote in his diaries, is the most innocent creature there is and sleepless man the most guilty.
Insomnia transformed Kafka into an unclean thing, quivering in fear of death. Perhaps I am afraid that the soul, which in sleep leaves me, will not be able to return, he conf...
If you were surprised by yesterdays announcement from Bitmain with their 15 GHS X11 ASIC miner, then the new X11 ASIC from Innosilicon will surprise you even more. The Innosilicon A5 DashMaster is claimed to be capable of delivering up to 30.2 GHS X11 hashrate with just 750W of power usage, that is double the performance with lower power usage compared to Antminer D3. Of course weve seen before Innosilicon pre-anounce specifications of ASIC miners that end up too much with the actual product not able to deliver what was initially offered, still even if they deliver slower hashrate and higher power usage than what is currently cited it could still be an interesting product. What is really important here is what the price will be as Bitmain did manage to offer a really sweet deal price wise for their 15 GHS X11 miner, no word on pricing for the A5 DashMaster yet though.

Update: Have you been feeling dizzy, light headed, head aches, agitated with the loss of appetite?
After watching SuspiciousObservers report from yesterday I thought I would make a little post about the energetic changes that are occurring. I recently met with Tear-Eir for the first time in weeks. I was shown the nearly transparent spheres through out the solar system. He stated that the energy buffers would soon fade away allowing the full brunt of the cosmic energy to fully impact the inner solar system and interact with the Sun. It was explained that what we have witnessed on the world stage over the last year.
We are seeing more volcanic, earthquake and electrical storm activity that we have previously observed. We have also seen the polarization between opposition group turn into wars to destroy the other side. We are seeing people around us behave as if they have End Times Madness. This diagnosis may not be far off. Many who are on the Service to Others and Karmic Cleansing path are also feeling the symptoms. Many of us are experiencing high anxiety, head aches, dizziness or vertigo, loss of appetite and unexplained agitation. Tear-Eir communicated that it was extremely important for each of us to ground ourselves and meditate often to maintain a high vibration. If we manage to stay in a higher vibratory state these cosmic energies will have less of an impact on our physiology. Tear-Eir stated that it was also very important for us all to coordinate our mass meditation efforts. It was further communicated that these symptoms of anxiety, dizziness, and headaches are causing many to want to withdraw and close off the world.
It is best if each of you communicates with people of the same vibration as much as possible right now. Networking, developing relationships and encouraging one another to continue our missions and to not feel alone against the darkness. Many of us are also finding it impossible not to deal with traumas from the past or karmic entanglements we have with others. It is best to bite your lower lip and focus on those issues head on. As difficult as that is to do, it allows you to maintain a higher vibration. These traumas and karmic entanglements have mass. The cosmic energies that are flowing through us eddy around those traumas and anchor you to a lower vibratory state that is not compatible with 4th Density energetics. I have found this very difficult to do my self in recent weeks. I am beginning to listen to a Remote Viewing DVD that I bought some years back. It is excellent for guiding me into deeper states of consciousness when I have too much on my mind to meditate on...

The mephaa (tlapaneca) community of San Miguel El Progreso, or Jba Wajin, in the Guerrerense municipality of Malinaltepec, triumphed over the Corazn de Tinieblas mining project through a legal ruling of national transcendence. The decision in favor of the community provides judicial protection against mining in that territory of the Mountain of Guerrero. First District Judge Estela Platero Salgado stated that [the communitys] rights had been violated and that the Mexican State has a constitutional and conventional obligation to respect the rights of this indigenous-agrarian community.
In a conversation with La Jornada, Valerio Mauro Amado Solano, president of Jba Wajins communal property commission, describes the extractivist spiral that began at this and other neighboring communities in 2010: First, pure rumors that they were going to lay mines , With no notification from the government. We were the last to know what they were trying to do on our land, it was said that they were licensed by the Ministry of Economy (SE). The police station investigated and the SE took a year to respond, saying yes, this was true. In 2011 an assembly rejected the mining license and presented it to the agrarian authority. We approached Tlachinollan (center for human rights based in the city of Tlapa), and in 2013 we filed our first claim for protection clause.
Australia quietly makes first uranium shipment to India three years after supply agreement, ABC Radio The World Today By South Asia correspondent James Bennett, 18 Jul 17 Three years after signing a civilian nuclear supply treaty, the Federal Government confirmed overnight the first shipment of Australian uranium has left for India.

Kakadu National Park: Jabiru residents in limbo as governments, mining company contemplate towns future, ABC, By Sara Everingham, 18 July 17, If the Northern Territorys mining town of Jabiru near Kakadu National Park is to stay afloat, decisions will need to be made soon to avoid the loss of essential services, infrastructure and people, a report commissioned by Energy Resources of Australia has warned.
ERA, which operates the Ranger Uranium mine, is planning for the expiry of its lease agreements in 2021.
The company is required to return the town of Jabiru, which is also a service hub for the national park, to its pre-development state, removing housing and critical infrastructure, including power and water services.
Jabiru, which has a population of about 1,100, was built in 1982 as a mining residential and service hub, and the majority of its residents, whether they work at the mine or not, live in the town.
Even if theres a consensus that Jabiru should continue to exist, its not clear what services would remain, particularly if theres a sharp population decline once ERA departs
The NT and Federal Governments have been in talks with traditional owners, the Northern Land Council, and ERA about a plan for the future of the town, but have not yet reached an agreement.
Traditional owners have also been in talks with the Commonwealth about a new township lease over Jabiru.
In the absence of any final agreements, ERA was planning for the closure of the town in four years time.
ERAs lease on the Ranger Uranium Mine expires in 2021, and the rehabilitation of the Ranger Mine has to be completed by 2026.
ERA had proposed prolonging the life of the Ranger mine by developing the underground 3 Deeps project, but in 2015 that plan lost the support of traditional owners and Rio Tinto, the majority shareholder of ERA.
The Mirrar traditional owners absolutely want to see the town continue and have been intensely lobbying the Federal Government since 2003, said Justin OBrien, CEO of the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation.
If you want security of tenure, if you want to avoid the bulldozers and the base case scenario thats still the only option on the table, sadly, you negotiate very speedily the township lease that the traditional owners have put on the table, which weve commenced negotiating with the Australian Government, he said.....
