Keeping lions at bay to keep them going "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Living together can be hard. But put people and their livestock close to lions and other hungry predators, and its as hard as it gets. In East Africa, wildlife and local people often clash, as predator attacks commonly threaten the livelihoods of pastoralists. In turn, locals retaliate against predators most especially lions straining further the future of these already threatened cats. A recent study published in the journal Conservation Evidence finds that setting up chain-link fences is a cost-effective solution for reducing the number of animals lost to big predators every year and thereby protecting both livestock and big predators. Researchers looked at how much strengthening these structures, known locally as bomas, reduced depredation in Kenyas Western Mara region by analyzing the success of the Boma Fortification Program, which is run by U.S.-based charity Anne K. Taylor Fund. They found that building chain-link fences around bomas to protect livestock can cut depredation of cattle by almost 75 percent. Whether one cow or one thousand cows, everyone wants to protect their animals, Dr. Alexandra Sutton, said lead author of the study and doctoral candidate at Duke Universitys Nicholas School of the Environment. While husbandry practices throughout the day are largely effective at keeping predators away, domestic animals remain vulnerable at night. But traditional bomas circular, open-air structures made of acacia thorns are not solid enough to withstand some attacks. Predator attacks lead to average losses of more than nine heads of cattle per household annually, estimated at $1,870.

"The Case For Not Knowing What Time It Is"
by David Cain

"Since I started experimenting with short stretches of idleness throughout my otherwise very busy summer days, Ive become convinced that wed probably get more done, and enjoy our lives more, if we encountered fewer clocks. Even without clocks, we know what part of the day were in- early morning, late morning, mid-afternoon- and thats usually enough to know what we ought to be doing right now. We can set alarms for appointments easily. So why do we need the time displayed on every electronic device, at all times? That much clockage might be more than just unnecessary. Maybe theres such thing as being too aware of the exact hour and minute. If there is, we must be well past that point.

As Ive hidden and disabled the clocks around me, the days seem to flow better. Without question, Im more efficient with my time, even though Im unsure of exactly how much of it goes where. It simply feels healthier to operate with the vague sense that its mid-morning than to know its 10:24.

Almost everyone reading this remembers living in an era where you had to make some effort to check the time. You had to look around to see whic...

The debt number had been stagnant since March due to the debt ceiling, as the US Treasury faced a temporary ban on further borrowing.

Is Big Brother is coming to the blockchain? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Financial advisor Jim Rickards thinks so. In a recent article titled, The Global Elites Secret Plan for Cryptocurrencies, he says,

the crypto-hysteria is distracting you from a scary truth no one is talking about. There is every indication that governments, regulators, tax authorities, and the global elite are moving in for the crypto-kill. The future of Bitcoin may be a dystopia in which Big Brother controls whats called the blockchain and decides when and how you can buy or sell anything and everything. Furthermore, cryptocurrency technology could be the very mechanism used by global elites to replace the dollar based financial system.

Rickards goes on to say Blockchain does not exist in the ether (despite the name of one cryptocurrency) and it does not reside on Mars. Blockchain depends on critical infrastructure including servers, telecommunications networks, the banking system, and the power grid, all of which are subject to government control, then lists a number of significant developments involving major banks, governments, and supra-governmental organizations like the IMF, all relating to their plans to legislate and control the use of blockchain technology, including its use in virtual currencies and financial transactions.

Can they really do that? Of course they can. In the mid-1800s, the U.S. government imposed a tax on banknotes issued by private banks driving them out of circulation; in 1933 the government made it illegal for private individual to own gold, requiring them to surrender their gold holdings in exchange for government sanctioned paper money at the arte of $20.67 per ounce of gold.

What will be the popular response to such measures against virtual currencies? Will people docilely comply, or will there arise massive disobedience and flaunting of the law, just as occurred in the 1930s during Prohibition, and has been ongoing more recently in the war against drugs? If there is such an uprising, I think it will be in defense, not of Bitcoin, but of some yet-to-be-created virtual currency that rewards virtuous behavior and contributions to the common good. t.h.g.

Pune: Though scientist Medha Khole has withdrawn her police complaint against her former cook accusing her of not correctly revealing her caste, the entire episode has opened a sordid can of worms about the caste discrimination faced by domestic staff in Pune.

Khole, who is deputy director general in the Indian Meteorological Department in the city, had complained that her cook Nirmala Yadav had desecrated her family deities by not revealing that she was not a Brahmin. According to Khole family tradition, apparently only a Brahmin and married housemaid could cook in sowale (purity) on death anniversaries and festivals such as Gauri Ganpati. Yadav worked in the Khole household for two years and her employer was apparently under the impression that she was a Brahmin. I got to know her real caste recently and I felt that my God was desecrated, so I approached the police, Khole said in her statement.

The Cruelty of Barack Obama On immigration, the ex-president isnt what he says he is "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

On immigration, the ex-president isnt what he says he is.

Image result for barack Obama, photos

By William McGurn
The Wall Street Journal
Sept. 11, 2017 7:05 p.m. ET

Throughout his political life, Barack Obama has been hustling America on immigration, pretending to be one thing while doing another. Now hes at it again. Mr. Obama calls it cruel of Donald Trump both to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protected hundreds of thousands of people who came to the U.S. as children illegallyand to ask Congress to fix it. The former president further moans that the immigration bill he asked Congress to send him never came, with the result that 800,000 young people now find themselves in limbo.

Certainly there are conservatives and Republicans who oppose and fight efforts by Congress to open this countrys doors, as well as to legalize the many millions who crossed into the U.S. unlawfully but have been working peacefully and productively. These immigration opponents get plenty of attention.

What gets almost zero press attention is the sneakier folks, Mr. Obama included. Truth is, no man has done more to poison the possibilities for fixing Americas broken immigration system than our 44th president.

Mr. Obamas double-dealing begins with his time as junior senator from Illinois, when he helped sabotage a bipartisan immigration package supported by George W. Bush and Ted Kennedy. Mr. Obamas dissembling continued during the first two years of his own presidency, when he had the votes to pass an immigration bill if he had chosen to push one. It was all topped off by his decision, late in his first term, to institute the policy on DACA that he himself had previously admitted was beyond his constitutional powers.

Let this columnist state at the outset that he favors a generous system of legal immigration because he believes it is good for America. Let him stipulate too that a fair and reasonable solution to 800,000 children who are here through no fault of their own should not be a sticking point for a nation as large as America. But once again, heres the point about Mr. Obama: For all his big talk about how much hes wanted an immigration bill, whenever hes had the opportunity to back one, hes either declined or actively worked to scuttle it.

Start with 2007, when a coalition of Republican and Democratic senators came up with a bill that also enjoyed the support of the Bush Wh...

The Gender Gap in STEM is NOT What You Think "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In a new NBER working paper David Card and Abigail Payne have a stunning new explanation of the gender gap in STEM at universities. The conventional wisdom is that the gender gap is about women and the forcesdiscrimination, sexism, parenting, aptitudes, choices; take your pickthat make women less likely to study in STEM fields. Card and Payne are saying that the great bulk of the gap is actually about men and their problems. At least that is my interpretation of their results, the authors, to my mind, dont clearly state just how much their results run against the conventional wisdom. (Have I misunderstood their paper? We shall see.)

The authors are using a large data set on Canadian high school students that includes data on grade 12 (level 4) high school classes and grades and initial university program. Using this data, the authors find that females are STEM ready:

At the end of high school, females have nearly the same overall rate of STEM readiness as males, and
slightly higher average grades in the prerequisite math and science courses.  The mix of STEM related courses taken by men and women is different, however, with a higher concentration of women in biology and chemistry and a lower concentration in physics and calculus.

Since females are STEM-ready when leaving high school you are probably thinking that the gender gap must be a result either of different entry choices conditional on STEM-readiness or different attrition rates. No. Card and Payne say that entry rates and attrition rates are similar for males and females. So what explains why males are more likely to take a STEM degree than females?

The main driver of the gender gap is the fact that many more females (44%) than males (32%) enter university.  Simply assuming that nonSTEM ready females had the same university entry rate as nonSTEM ready males would
narrow the gender gap in the fraction of university entrants who are STEM ready from 14
percentage points to less than 2 percentage points.

Moreover:

On average, females have about the same average grades in UP (University Preparation, AT) math and sciences courses as males, but higher grades in English/French and other qualifying courses that count toward the top 6 scores that determine their university rankings. This comparative advantage explains a substantial share of the gender difference in the probability of pursing a STEM major, conditional on being STEM ready at the end of high school.

Put (too) simply the only men who....

Meadville leaders notified of water authoritys fluoride application plans "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Meadville City Council has received official notification of Meadville Area Water Authoritys intentions to apply to the state Department of Environmental Protection for a permit to add a fluoridation system.

A letter announcing the upcoming application was read at councils most recent meeting. The letter was acknowledged by council but was not discussed.

The letter was necessitated by state law, which requires that applicants for public water supply permits notify the municipalities they serve. Similar letters were also sent to officials in Vernon and West mead townships, according to Thomas Thompson, senior project manager at Gannett Fleming and consulting engineer for MAWA.

Notification must be sent to affected municipalities at least 30 days before DEP rules on the permit application, Thompson stated in the letter.

DEP has not yet received MAWAs permit application, according to Melanie Williams, community relations coordinator. The typical turnaround time on such an application is 120 business days, Williams said.

The mere fact it was acknowledged in the official communiqu is a step in the right direction. Some people might say it is not enough but it must be said that small steps are better than no step at all.
On the other hand, for allowing the protest to proceed barring an incident where protesters were asked to produce a permit the government of Samoa can also hold its head up high that it allowed a basic freedom in a democracy to be exercised.
The fact that the protesting group was allowed to express their views without having anyone dragged into Police cells, as weve so often seen in these things, is a good sign for Samoa.

Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. Im Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: Community control of the police activists in New York City take the struggle into the bowels of the subway system, while, in Philadelphia, activists present their case to the City Council; and, Dr. Anthony Monteiro says the time is right for a real progressive movement but the Left doesnt know how to take advantage of it.

Peace and environmental activists will hold a conference September 22nd and 23rd at American University, in Washington, to explore the possibilities of political cooperation. Veteran anti-war activist David Swanson is one of the organizers of the conference. According to Swanson, environmental organizations have historically avoided association with the peace movement.

President Donald Trump may have thought he would terrify North Korea, and the rest of the world, with his threats to bring down fire and fury if the U.S. doesnt get its way. However, Dr. Anthony Monteiro, the Dubosian scholar from Philadelphia, says, despite Trumps huffing and puffing, the U.S. superpower isnt so super any more.

Diop Olugbala, of the Black Is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations, has an important date coming up with the Philadelphia City Council. The Black Is Back Coalition and its allies are pressing for Black Community Control of the police.

In the Queens section of New York City, the Coalition to End Broken Windows Policing this year took the fight against police oppression into the subway system. Lauren Concepcion is an organizer with the Swipe It Forward campaign, which urges New Yorkers who have unlimited fare cards to swipe through low income and young people, so that they wont get snatched up by the cops for jumping turnstiles. All Food Is GONE! Violence Erupts On Caribbean Island Of St. Martin "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Hurricane Irma ravaged the Caribbean islands last week and wiped entire islands off the map. Now that the food and water have been scavenged from every grocery store on St. Martin, people are resorting to violence.
The people obviously started with the grocery stores, scavenging what they needed for sustenance; water, crackers, and fruit. But according to the New York Times, by nightfall on Thursday, what had been a search for food took a more menacing turn, as groups of people (some of whom were armed), swooped in and violently took anything of value that was left. Things like electronics, appliances, and vehicles were all stolen.
The social fabric has begun to fray now that people are without the most basic of essentials: food and water. All the food is gone now, Jacques Charbonnier, a 63-year-old resident of St. Martin, said in an interview on Sunday. People are fighting in the streets for what is left. Food to Sustain our Earth at Risk into the Future "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

World population growth outstripping food production capacity

Long Term Prospects for Food are not Good

Essay by S. Tom Bond, Resident Farmer, Jane Lew, WV

The future is always different from the past, but the pace of change is rapidly increasing for food, especially. Primary worsening factors are the world population increase, global warming, loss of farmland by development and erosion, and the increasing severity of large scale political conflict with the increasing possibility of nuclear weapons. About the only factor one might think of that could improve the prospect for adequate food supply is technology.

Not much can be projected about the increasing possibility of use of nuclear weapons. It depends too much on kinky leaders. No doubt the rich men in many countries will continue to manipulate politics to try to steal the wealth of the rich men in other countries. We might see some distance into the future if rational paths were followed, but too much depends on irrational leaders, so what we can see or do concerning use of nuclear war is pretty much in the realm of prayer.

On the other hand, population growth is highly predictable from the number of children born in a year and their expected life span, which is the stuff of a census. Birth rates change slowly in response to opportunity and workload of the child bearers. Wars seldom leave a wrinkle on the graph of population against time, and only very severe diseases like the Black Death of the Middle Ages show up. Only China has been able to affect birth rate by law, but even that law was largely ignored in rural areas. Government restraint has caused a downward alteration in the curve, but not a decline.

Loss of farmland by erosion is not new. Books have been written about civilizations that have perished because they destroyed the soil. I vividly remember the pamphlets produced in the 1930s about soil conservation by the new U. S. Soil Conservation Service. At that time corn rows went up and down hill, manure wasnt widely used as fertilizer, cover crops werent used to control sheet and wind erosion, gullies were ignored, fences were poor and many other practices to avoid erosion were not used.

The SCS encouraged contour farming, spreading manure on crops, seeding tilled land with a cover crop in time for winter, controlling gullies by building check dams, planting trees for a windbreak, and similar little tricks that held soil in place. Today the....

In 2012, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission fined Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Co. He had declined to design, bake, and sell a wedding cake for a same-sex wedding. Five years later, on June 26, 2017, the Supreme Court granted his appeal of a lower court decision.

Phillips answered questions at a policy forum hosted by The Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC. The Commission ruled that I am required now to make cakes for same-sex weddings, he stated. In order to comply with that ruling and obey the law, we decided we wouldnt make wedding cakes at all. It was 40 percent of our business and we lost that. Before the two men came into our shop, I had ten employees. Now I have four.

Speech Compulsions Are As Unconstitutional As Speech Restrictions

Phillips legal battle centered on alleged discrimination, and free speech is expected to become a topic of national discussion when the Supreme Court hears his case later this year. The high courts ruling in the 2015 case Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-sex marriages across the United States.

On Thursday at a Capitol Hill press conference, Congresswoman Vicki Hartzler (R-Missouri) and Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) announced that 86 members of Congress have signed on to an amicus brief in support of Phillips rights to free expression.

The Cato Institute, a leading libertarian think tank which supports same-sex marriage, also filed an amicus brief in his support. Speech compulsions are just as unconstitutional as speech restrictions, states an excerpt from their brief.

Most surprising to those opposing him, the Trump administrations Justice Department also filed a brief supporting Phillips. I find this nothing short of shocking, said Louise Melling, deputy legal counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

At the policy forum, Phillips appeared alongside other Americans whose work has been threatened by lawsuits. The legal battles stemmed from the artists reticence to utilize their creative talents and services in affirming same-sex marriage....

Why You Should Stop Trying To Change Peoples Minds "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Recently I posted the following question on my Facebook page: Are you actually interested in opinions you disagree with? The answers began to pop up and, given the bipartisan nature of my Facebook page, they were from a mix of friends on the Left and the Right.

Every answer started with Yes, but almost all, from both sides, contained caveats. Some said the person they disagree with must accept facts and science, some said he must be open to new ideas, some said he must not offend.

After a few dozen of these responses, my friend Jess chimed in with a very important point. She noticed that what tied these Yes, but, answers together was a requirement that the person offering the opinion be persuadable. She suggested this is a poor standard upon which to limit ones discourse, and it seems to me she is exactly right.

An Old Debate

A major problem with valuing discourse on the basis of persuadability is that it makes all of our conversations and consumption of ideas transactional. We are only listening with the intent of finding flaws we can use to prove the truth of our own perspective. But this assumes discourse is a zero-sum game, that eventually one idea will win and one will lose. While sometimes this is truethe earth is round, for examplethe vast majority of the time it is not.

In a sense, this demand for efficacy and admission of error from my Facebook buddies stretches back to Plato. Socratic dialogue establishes a dialectic in which the great philosopher does indeed correct and change the minds of his interlocutors. But much more recently, in the late eighteenth century, G.W.F. Hegel discovered a fundamental flaw in Platos approach. In most discourse, he argued, one idea doesnt banish its opposite, but together they form a new idea.

Hegel described his new dialectic in terms of a thesis (original idea), antithesis (argument against that idea), and finally a synthesis (a new idea that emerges). Today on our televisions, radios, and social media Platos winner-take-all approach dominates. There is very little room for synthesis, a moment that requires intellectual clarity, rather than emotional bombast.

Just Listen

For discourse to achieve synthesis, we must listen to the arguments those we disagree with make, not with the intent to knock them down, but to understand them. Too often, the first arrow we pull from our rhetorical quiver targets the reasons the idea is wrong based on our own understanding. A better, though much more difficult, approach is to use our questions to determine if the argument is intellectually consistent, given the worldview of the person we are listening to.

A tremendous example of such a dialogue can be found in our nations early history. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson founded a country to...

How Online Marketers Use Facebook Quizzes To Exploit Your Narcissism For Easy Bucks "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

I have a tip for you. Those Facebook intelligence quizzes that claim only 5% of the population will get all these answers right are not actual intelligence quizzes. I hope you already knew that. If not, youre welcome.

Those quizzes are either rigged, disingenuous (almost everyone can see the difference between these little colored squares) or are outright scams designed to get your personal information. Even at their best, quizzes shared on Facebook are marketing tools, either used for ad revenue, cookies, or brand engagement. They are, indeed, the ultimate clickbait.

Using Your Narcissism To Make Money

The one secret marketing companies dont want you to know? They prey on the narcissism inherent in social media use to get clicks. A University of Michigan study shows that social media reflects and amplifies our cultures growing levels of narcissism and attract individuals most in need of an ego boost. (The jury is out on whether social media is more about making a connection versus a venue for preening and self-promotion, but at least theres a quiz to help you figure it out).

A high score on an intelligence-measuring test, for example, is one way to signal to your friends what youve known along: that you are very, very smart. With some tests that truly go viral, it is a way to one-up others. Take, for example, a vocabulary quiz that in June 2016 was shared more than 78,000 times and liked over 51,000 times.

As always, the results of this quiz should be taken with a grain of salt, not in this case because it is rigged but because the questions start off relatively simple then throw in some very obscure words. Thus, almost anyone choosing to take such a test will likely do well...

Peggy Noonan Was Right About The National Cathedrals Confederate Windows "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Columnist Peggy Noonans recent tweets criticizing the Washington National Cathedrals decision to remove the stained glass windows of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson might have landed her in hot water among Twitters reactionaries, but she was right and doesnt deserve to be called a white supremacist simply for speaking the truth.

In response to scrubbing the church of Confederate symbols, she tweeted, A shonda [Yiddish for shame]. They were figures in the greatest, most killing moral struggle in U.S. history. They didnt tweet, they took to the field and died.

Then one side won, she continued, they reconciled, the American experiment continued and we learned through this history. Keep em. Let it be. They are us.

The reaction was to be expected: They fought against America. They are the poison in Americas soul you are far too willing to drink and right here spread. Shameful. THEY WERE TREASONOUS, PRO-SLAVERY GHOULS, WHO HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING ACKNOWLEDGED ANYWHERE OTHER THAN HISTORY BOOKS AND MUSEUMS.

Peggy lives in a delusion that pretends white folks r actually goodif u look REALLY hard. Shes just another #whitesupremacist. Another tweet said, They owned slaves, Peggyto which she responded: Thats what the fight, which existed from our national beginning, was about. They resolved it: all men are and must be free. They RESOLVED it.

The reactions to Noonans tweets reveal the ignorance many have of the Civil War and the rash judgments they place on people in the past. The men who fought in the Civil War deserve our remembrance, because we judge them by the best of who they were, not the worst. To make such a generous judgment, we need to understand why these men fought.

Slavery Was Not the Only Thing They Fought Over

Contrary to popular opinions today, Union soldiers did not primarily fight to free the slaves or to secure their equality. They fought to preserve the Union. Likewise, Confederate soldiers did not primarily fight for slavery. They largely believed they fought to preserve the independence of the South from Northern invaders.

In saying this, I am not making the case that the Civil War wasnt about slavery. It certainly was, but it wasnt onlyor even primarilyabout slavery. This doesnt diminish the integral role slavery played in the war, but there was much more to it,....

Photographers Respond to Trumps Comments on Sweden Protecting The Image, Ignoring Many of the Facts "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

STOCKHOLM Swedens leading photographers are launching a new exhibit and publishing a book in response to President Donald Trumps criticism of the countrys immigration policy.

During a rally in Florida in February, Trump said that terrorism was growing in Europe, and look whats happening last night in Sweden. But the comment baffled many Swedes because there had been no extraordinary trouble that night in Sweden, a country welcoming to immigrants.

Publisher Max Strom commissioned Last night in Sweden in an effort to present a more diverse and multi-faceted portrait of Sweden.

Photographer and publisher Jeppe Wikstrom told The Associated Press before the exhibits opening that we felt we had to react because we didnt recognize Sweden at all in his words.

The crowdfunded book hits the shelves Tuesday.

DNA Proves Fearsome Viking Warrior Was a Woman "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

DNA proves fearsome Viking warrior was a woman:

A 10th century Viking unearthed in the 1880s was like a figure from Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries: an elite warrior buried with a sword, an ax, a spear, arrows, a knife, two shields, and a pair of warhorses. [...] a new study published today in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology finds that the warrior was a womanthe first high-status female Viking warrior to be identified. Excavators first uncovered the battle-ready body among several thousand Viking graves near the Swedish town of Birka, but for 130 years, most assumed it was a manknown only by the grave identifier, Bj 581. [...] Now, the warrior's DNA proves her sex, suggesting a surprising degree of gender balance in the Vikings' violent social order.

Her name was Lagertha.

No, A Classical Education Is Not Impossible To Revive In Americas Degenerate Society "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Several months ago, a colleague handed me David Hicks classic work of conservative pedagogy, Norms and Nobility. First published in 1981, Hicks book argues that the ancient Greeks embedded in their literature and history the goal of forming (through paideia, education) young men into an Ideal Type. From that premise, Hicks constructs a specific argument about the value of a Great Books-centered education and how that approach summons the student to develop his heart and soul into pursuing the Good, the True, and the Beautiful.

I appreciated Hicks analysis, in part because he brought out some excellent observations about ancient literature. Yet I find flawed the presupposition that education should lead a student to fit into an Ideal Type. I also doubt that the Greeks, who for all their universal humane vision struggled with basic ethical categories, unveiled the Ideal Type of humanity.

This last school year, Hicks wrote an essay, Is Classical Education Still Possible? To my shock, he answered no. Hicks denied the possibility (not the practice, but the very possibility) of conducting truly classical education in twenty-first-century America. Here I respond and propose a definition of classical education that provides hope in place of Hickss pedagogical despair.

Classical Ed Is Not Strong Enough Medicine for Our Disease

Hicks tone is one of dismay. Reflecting on his 50 years in education, he writes, Its hard to make this backward glance without cynicism or to look ahead without despair. Hicks sees educators divided into two groups: those who believe that in technology, brain-research, mega-data, or some research-based breakthrough we will discover new tools and approaches that will revolutionize the way we learn and teach, and those who believe that recovering the lost tools of learning will spark another Renaissance and turn those trend lines around. Hicks then distinguishes those who attempt to follow some sort of classical method within the second group.

Classical education lacks a clear definition, in Hicks view. The term classical education does not so much describe a specific and well understood approach to learning and teaching as something that feels good and appeals to this second group of reformers and to those, mostly parents, who no longer trust the first group and are looking around for alternatives to their failing local school systems. Rather than a diverse, contemporary educational movement like that described by Andrew Kern and Gene Veith in Classical Education: The Movement Sweeping America, Hicks posits classical education as a feel-good movement comprised of those dissatisfied with public education offering.

He goes on to claim that classical education as practiced in...

In Response To Attacks, New Florida Law Aims To Protect Religious Expression In Public Schools "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Christianity, part of Americas national heritage, is increasingly contended in public education. Broad arguments have succeeded in wiping out Christian prayers and a decades-old historical pledge in courts across the country. But new legislation in Florida aims to ensure that students may practice Christianity, and any religion, freely this school year and beyond.

A Series of Public School Attacks

What began as isolated incidences in the Sunshine State grew into a string of anti-Christian attacks against students in recent years. A math teacher in Hillsborough County, Florida, a proponent of the LGBT agenda and a lesbian, told a student she couldnt wear a cross in her classroom because the cross represents a gang symbol, said Anthony Verdugo, founder and executive director of Christian Family Coalition Florida.

Three years ago, a student named Giovanni Rubeo, an elementary school student at Park Lakes Elementary School in Lauderdale Lakes, was reprimanded by a teacher, taken to the principals office and had his parents pulled from work, all for reading a Bible during his free reading time in school, Verdugo said. Obviously this teacher felt that her rules overrode the First Amendment.

There are also cases against prayer in public school in Florida, Verdugo said.

Through these cases and others, we established there was a need in Florida for the Florida Student and School Personnel Religious Liberties Act to remedy these cases of discrimination, Verdugo said.

Anti-Religious School Policies On the Rise

As a school board member, I can tell you that it was much needed clarifying guidance for local policy makers, said Shawn Frost, Florida Coalition of School Board Members president. As a conservative, I can tell you that the bias toward secular humanism in our schools is a daily assault on the deeply held religious values of families by administrators that needed to be put in check. The prevailing philosophy is that schools should offer freedom from religion, even when practiced by fellow students.

From my perspective, there is a very anti-Christian sentiment in many of our public schools, said Daniel Diaz. Teachers are afraid to mention anything related to their faith, so much so that their fear and caution gets passed on to the students as if the students were an extension of the state, because they attend a publicly-funded school. Also, because of the political correctness and sue-happy culture we live in, school districts are doing everything they can to prevent potential lawsuits by passing anti-religious expression policies that limit the students from doing things as simple as reading their bibles during free time, or drawing pictures of biblical figures which they consider heroes.

Weve seen the censorship of....

Texas Clinic To Raise Harvey Death Count By 15 With Crowdfunded Abortions "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In the aftermath of deadly hurricane Harvey, which ravaged parts of Texas and Louisiana last month and killed at least 77 people, abortionists are scheming to raise the death count even higher.

Whole Womans Health, a nationwide chain of abortion clinics, has scheduled abortions for 15 Harvey babies so far, which would raise the death count to at least 85. In partnership with The Lilith Fund, the abortion provider says its helping women whose lives were turned upside down by Harveys destructive floodwaters, by aborting their children for free.

Amy Hagstrom Miller, founder and CEO of Whole Womans Health, told The Texas Tribune theyre doing this because many women probably missed their previously scheduled abortion appointments during the storm. She also added that the deadly floodwaters changed the situation for many expecting mothers.

Miller isnt wrong. Women primarily seek abortions due to economic reasons, which is why abortion isnt empowering. Killing a womans child doesnt change the fact that she lost everything in the storm, nor does it help her get out of her dire financial circumstance. It merely ends the life of her pre-born baby. If you or someone you know is faced with an unplanned pregnancy and looking for help, heres a few resources to start with.

Monuments To Robert E. Lee Should Stay Because They Mark Our Growth As A Nation "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

To our collective horror, a vandal recently desecrated the Lincoln Memorial, and wed feel no better were someone to harm the Martin Luther King Jr. or Iwo Jima Memorials. The moral principle that monuments are out of boundsbecause all are sacred to someone, and we all have to get along like grown-upsis quite sound. It also brakes calls for the destruction of Confederate monuments.

The iconoclasts who wish to get around this have devised some superficial talking points: a good example is an attack on Robert E. Lee for having been a traitor unworthy of commemoration, and on his commemorators for having been racially motivated and thus undeserving to leave monuments behind them. Lee was a traitor if the Southern states had no right to secede in 1861, yet many Americans have admired Lee nonetheless, and even raised statues to him. How could this be?

To answer such a question, we tend to fall into the trap of asking ourselves why someone would raise such a statue today. Hard experience from the civil rights era up to the recent march in Charlottesville has prepared us to find racist intent. Then when we ask ourselves why people of a more distant past erected statues to Lee, we project racist intent onto them, as though our thought processes were interchangeable with theirs, their motives deducible from ours.

Despite Racism, Commemoration Had Other Motivations

Noting the presentist fallacy does not give the statue erectors a pass. There is much objective evidence for the astonishingly offensive opinions whites took for granted about blacks in the Civil War commemoration era. In the South, powerful whites from governors down to policemen in the street enforced black subordination. Vigilante action and lynchings illegally enforced the same. The fortress of Jim Crow stood strong until federal intervention bypassed locally entrenched systems of repression.

Yet the claim that statues of Lee were intended as buttresses of this repressive social order before the desegregation era is dubious. It lacks support beyond mere plausibility and the circumstantial argument that Jim Crow caused commemoration of Lee because it correlated with it in time. Why would whites, safe within the fortress of Jim Crow, have wasted money building bastions within its walls?

There is an alternative explanation with more convincing plausibility and circumstantial arguments: Whites competed against one another socially by supporting and paying for those statues, thus signaling their civic virtue. They put the statues to Lee where they performed socially, at civic center and in their up-and-coming neighborhoods like Monument Avenue. I am unaware of any monumental statue of Lee erected in what was a black neighborhood at the time, which is where I would look for at least some of them if they were social weapons aimed at blacks. A rece...

Why Illegal Immigrant Advocacy Groups Arent Really Pro-Immigrant "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Western civilization is crumbling. Some people even think the demise of all things white and European is a good thing.

Ironically, the people who think so tend to be the same people who think sanctuary cities and open borders are great, and painting immigrants with a broad brush is not. These are the people who think of themselves as pro-immigrant, but they couldnt be more wrong. Group identity, open borders, and sanctuary cities are pro-immigrant only in the world of fantasy moral high ground.

Those of us who think individualism is great and sanctuary cities and open borders are not tend to be the same people who think the demise of Western culture is a terrible thing. We are the ones called anti-immigrant, but that couldnt be further from the truth. Were the ones who are actually saving immigrant lives. And were doing it with Western values like individualism and the rule of law.

Whats Wrong with Sanctuary Cities

The idea that sanctuary cities protect immigrants is just stupid. Legal and illegal immigrants alike are at more risk in sanctuary cities because they attract criminal illegal aliens who prey on thema fact attested to by Juan Francisco Lpez-Snchez, the criminal illegal alien who killed San Francisco resident Kate Steinle. Lpez-Snchez was only in San Francisco because it was a sanctuary city. He said so himself (43:49).

The specious argument for sanctuary cities is that poor, innocent immigrants are at the mercy of criminal aliens because theyre so afraid of deportation, they wont report the crimes to law enforcement. If deportation were the worst thing that could happen to illegal aliens, the argument would hold water. But it isnt. The worst thing that can happen to themand criminal aliens well know thisis to have themselves victimized or family back home threatened or killed.

So what if a sanctuary city makes it easier for illegal aliens to report a local crime to law enforcement? They arent about to report threats to their families back home because A) theres nothing local law enforcement can do and B) it puts their families in more danger. Since sanctuary cities attract criminal illegal aliens, the immigrants in those cities are statistically more likely to be victims of crimes they can do nothing about.

Five days after he took office, as is his constitutional prerogative, anti-immigrant President Trump issued an executive order denying certain federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions that willfully refuse to cooperate with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Immediately, the pro-immigrant....

Democrats Keep Their Mouths Shut As Menendez Trial Gets Weirder "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

In 2008, Sen. Bob Menendez sent a letter of support to the State Department to get two women from the Dominican Republic a U.S. visa, and one of these women happened to be the girlfriend of a wealthy eye doctor who prosecutors say bribed the Democratic senator with gifts and luxury vacations in exchange for favors. At least, thats what Menendezs former staffer, Mark Lopes, said while testifying against his old boss in court on Monday.

Today, Menendez and his wealthy friend, Dr. Salomon Melgen, face 18 counts of bribery and fraud. Both say theyre innocent of wrongdoing. Melgen was convicted of Medicaid fraud earlier this year and was the single largest Medicaid recipient in 2012 snagging a cool $21 million that year. At the heart of the case against the eye doctor is a $8.9 million billing dispute, which is when prosecutors say Melgen asked Menendez to intervene with the government on his behalf.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, may chose another Republican to replace Menendez if his seat becomes vacant, which would affect the political makeup of the U.S. Senate. Yet Democrats are busy pretending like everything is fine.

Should a convicted felon be allowed to serve in the Senate? a Republican operative recently asked Sen. Kamala Harris, over and over again, in the video below. Her response? Silence.

Shes not the only Democrat whos being tight-lipped about the trial. Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Menendez was issuing a spirited defense and refused to speculate about the potential outcomes of the trial or subsequent political consequences. Sen. Joe Manchin and a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New Jersey also kept quiet when asked about Menendezs case.

Woman punishes SatNav with trip to Wales "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In return for years of surly instruction and demands that she take the second exit at the roundabout, Esme St. Fleur (52) has decided to inflict a syllabic slap-down on her pushy on-board navigation system. By deliberately driving in reverse down Eisteddfod Road in Cwmystwyth, Mrs St. Fleur has managed to give her SatNav a stammer and a much overdue sense of inferiority.

The relationship with her SatNav originally broke down in 2013, somewhere in between Spaghetti Junction and a service station that never appeared. Subsequently, Mrs St.Fleur grew weary of SatNav calling the A5115 the A Five thousand, one hundred and fifteen or it going into a silent sulk just before a vital turning.

The battle of wills was heightened by the fact Mrs St. Fleurs GPS did not seem to have updated its map library since Magna Carta. Coupled with its pompous insistence that it use only the first five letters of a postcode, had made it the most annoyingly, smug driving companion since James Corden.

Mrs Fleur growled: Whats wrong with just an ordinance survey map and a small supply of Kendal mintcake? The only touch screen option I want, is if I can throttle the bitch. Ive had it up to here, with every time she suggests I go off-road to Tescos or that the Thames estuary is the quickest route to Calais. Llanfairpwllgwyngyll here I come!

1,000-Year-Old Illustrated Guide to the Medicinal Use of Plants Now Digitized & Put Online "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

If you don't much care for modern medicine, entire industries have arisen to provide you with more "alternative" or "natural" varieties of remedies, mostly involving the consumption of plants. Publishers have put out guides to their use by the dozens. In a way, those books have a place in a long tradition, stretching back to a time well before modern medicine existed as something to be an alternative to. Just recently, the British Library digitized the oldest such volume, a thousand-year-old illuminated manuscript known as the Cotton MS Vitellius C III. The book, writes the British Library's Alison Hudson, "is the only surviving illustrated Old English herbal, or book describing plants and their uses." (The sole condition note: "leaves damaged by fire in 1731.")

The manuscript's Old English is actually the translation of "a text which used to be attributed to a 4th-century writer known as Pseudo-Apuleius, now recognized as several different Late Antique authors whose texts were subsequently combined." It also includes "translations of Late Antique texts on the medicinal properties of badgers" and another text "on medicines derived from parts of four-legged animals."

LEGO Prototyping with Tinkercads Brick Mode "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

[Andrew Sink] made a brief video demonstrating how he imported an STL of the well-known 3D Benchy tugboat model, and instead of sending it to a 3D printer used the Brick Mode feature to make a physical copy out of LEGO bricks in an eye-aching kaleidoscope of colors.

For those of you who havent used Tinkercad lately, Brick Mode allows you to represent a model as LEGO bricks at various scales. You model something as usual (or import a model) and by pushing a single button, render it in LEGO as accurately as can be done with standard bricks.

In addition, [Andrew] shows how the Layers feature can be used as a makeshift assembly guide for the model, albeit with a couple of quirks that he explains in the video embedded below.

LEGO can be useful for prototyping, so once youve sorted all your LEGO blocks with the aid of a DIY machine and converted a few motors to be LEGO compatible, you might want to give this new feature a whirl.

Syrias Victory is a Severe Blow to the Global Extremism Project "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Syrias victory in remaining still standing still on its feet, as it were amid the ruins of all that has been visited upon her, marks effectively the demise of the Bush Doctrine in the Middle East (of the New Middle East). It signals the beginning of the end not just of the political regime change project, but also of the Sunni jihadi project which has been used as the coercive tool for bringing into being a New Middle East.

Just as the region has reached a geopolitical inflection point, however, so too, has Sunni Islam. Wahhabi-inspired Islam has taken a major hit. It is now widely discredited amongst Sunnis, and reviled by just about everyone else.

Just to be clear how linked were the two projects:

In the wake of the first Gulf War (1990-91), General Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, recalled: In 1991, [Paul Wolfowitz] was the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy  And I had gone to see him ()

And I said, Mr. Secretary, you must be pretty happy with the performance of the troops in Desert Storm.

And he said: Yeah, but not really, because the truth is we should have gotten rid of Saddam Hussein, and we didnt  But one thing we did learn is that we can use our military in the region??in the Middle East??and the Soviets wont stop us. And weve got about 5 or 10 years to clean up those old Soviet client regimes??Syria, Iran, Iraq??before the next great superpower comes on, to challenge us.

Should Trump Pivot on Tax Reform? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Im going to make this post shorter than the last one. Presumably, you will thank me for this. Im not going to get down in the weeds of all the procedure involved in trying to pass tax reform using the budget reconciliation process. Instead, Ill just note that the process shares most of the characteristics we saw in the effort to repeal Obamacare with the budget reconciliation rules.

In both cases, the idea is that the Republicans can pass a bill through the Senate without worrying about a Democratic filibuster. In both cases, the Republicans have to pass the legislation with almost no defections from their own side. And, in both cases, its a time consuming process that needs to be completed by a definite deadline. In the case of health care, their chance officially expires after September 30th when the fiscal year ends. In the case of tax reform, the deadline would be next September 30th.

Now, Trump did Congress a favor by clearing the looming debt ceiling and government shutdown crises off the September calendar, which should allow them to work on a budget which can include reconciliation directives for tax reform. But we saw the health care effort founder on the inability to unite Republicans on the issue of Medicaid expansion. Any tax reform bill will be complicated by several similar conundrums. For example, what happens when you eliminate the exemption for state and local taxes and you discover that this is a good deal for some Republican senators states and a horrible deal for others states? Thats just one example, but its well known that tax reform is difficult because it creates winners and losers and that those winners and losers dont break down neatly along partisan lines.

President Trump now needs to decide if he wants to begin this process anew after it failed him on health care. Does he want to risk not getting any tax cuts or tax reform at all because he trusted Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell to deliver on something that they could not actually deliver?

Its obviously tempting to try, because the party is kind of demanding it for one thing, but also because who wants to make concessions when they might not have to?

On the other hand, why take the risk of complete failure?

The Democrats are not opposed to working on a tax reform bill, but they do insist on a few conditions:

Schumer and 44 others in the Senate Democratic caucus signed a letter in August that laid out three key principles that we believe are prerequisites to any bipartisan tax reform effort.

These are that any tax-reform plan should provide no tax cut for wealthy people, be fiscally responsib...

Why Trump Pivoted "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Its not necessarily a great feeling to find myself in complete agreement with a person like Rick Manning, but hes only saying exactly what Ive been saying repeatedly for the last ten months.

Republicans who dared to cut deals with Democrats have long had to fear retribution from conservative activists like Rick Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government. He had railed against a 2015 debt-ceiling compromise as absurd, and as recently as March called for President Trump to use the vote to create real reforms to cut spending, the Washington Post reports.

But when Trump shocked the nation last week, handing Democrats a major victory by accepting their terms for a clean three-month suspension of the borrowing limit, Manning says he felt no ill will for the president. Instead, he blamed House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for forcing Trump to work with Democrats. He gave them the opportunity to legislate and they failed, so of course hes got to knock over the table, Manning said.

Lets go back to that absurd debt-ceiling compromise from 2015. Its important, because it helps us remember how Paul Ryan became Speaker of the House.

For years, tensions had been boiling between the hard right of the Republican Party and the House leadership, a battle that effectively pushed Speaker John Boehner out of office and ended the bid of Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to succeed him.

The first serious sign that John Boehners grip on the Speakers gavel might be loosening came just before the 2015 August recess, when Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina filed a non-privileged motion to vacate the chair. It was no more than a shot against Boehners bow because it went straight to the Rules Committee which was still under Boehners iron control, and that meant that the motion wasnt going anywhere. It sent a strong message, though, especially because it was accompanied by an itemized list of grievances, including the...

This is a critical moment for our politics.

The challenge we all face is to forge a society based on a positive accommodation of difference and diversity.

That challenge is made all the more important following the Brexit Bill vote last night.

N. Korea hackers suspected of stealing bitcoins "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

AFP/File | Experts suspect North Korean hackers of trying to steal bitcoins and other virtual currencies

SEOUL (AFP)  North Korea is suspected of intensifying cyber-attacks to steal virtual currency in order to obtain funds and avert tightening sanctions, according to security experts.North Korean hackers have mounted attacks on at least three South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges since May, security researcher FireEye said in a report Monday.

The attacks include an apparently successful one when four wallets at Seoul-based exchange Yapizon were compromised.

Local news reports said that in May Yapizon had more than 3,800 bitcoins worth $15 million stolen although FireEye said there were no clear indications of North Korean involvement in that case.

South Koreas opposition Bareun Party lawmaker Ha Tae-Kyung, who has followed North Korean hacking attempts, said it had apparently stolen more than 90 billion won ($80 million) from South Korea through hacking attacks in the four years to June, including cyber-attacks on ATMs.

North Korea has set its sights on the so-called next generation financial markets, including virtual currencies, pin-tech and blockchains, he told journalists last week.

Alongside the UN-imposed sanctions, international cooperation is also required to curb the Norths cyber-hacking which can be used to finance its nuclear and missile programmes, he said.

South Korea has become one of the worlds busiest trading hubs for cryptocurrencies, with Seoul-based Bithumb ranking as the worlds largest exchange for the ethereum virtual currency.

In June Bithumb was hit by cyber attacks, possibly linked to the North, in which information about 30,000 customers was leaked.

Some 160 customers are preparing a class action suit against Bithumb, claiming they lost around $10 million in total.

North Korean actors used spearphishing attacks targeting the personal email accounts of employees at digital currency exchanges, FireEye said in its report published Monday.

They frequently use tax-themed lures and deployed malware and variants linked to the North Koreans who are suspected of being behind intrusions into global banks in 2016, FireEye said.

It should be no surprise that cryptocurencies, as an emerging asset class, are becoming a target of interest by a regime that operates in many ways like a criminal enterprise, it said.......

What caused the sudden disappearance of ocean waters in Long Island in the Bahamas? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Picture
Charlotte Saunders Ferguson posted on her Facebook page a video in where you can see that Hurricane Irma took all the ocean waters in Long Island in the Bahamas. Charlotte shocked by what see witnessed wrote bible prophecies being played out right here and now its like God opened the red sea for Mozes, God is amazingly powerful.
If you see the video below than its quite understandable that she was shocked by what see witnessed. Now there is much discussion on the web about how it is possible that all the ocean waters suddenly disappeared.

Well, there is nothing Natural about the sudden disappearing from the ocean waters. It has everything to do with Water Vapor Generation in advance of the storm that will be sucked up and dropped on Florida in torrential rain.

Circular In-Place Simultaneous and Coordinated Bursts of Rapid Evaporation combining to create the bands of Irma, and that exact process can be seen throughout this storms development.

From start to finish, the bursts are the only reason this storm exists at all, and they prove the manmade and deliberate origin. The fact of the matter is this Global Water Vapor Generation System that created Irma from scratch all the way across the Atlantic in Africa, has existed and been under development for over half a century.
The very same bursts visible throughout this storm are identifiable on satellite imagery from the 60s and 70s. Granted, there were considerably less of them and this system was far less widespread, but this method of weather has been hidden from the public in plain sight for at least 50 years

Below Charlottes ocean video followed up with an excellent video showing how such a Global Water Vapor Generation system works.

Update: The ocean bed has filled up again, the sea has gradually come back.

Brisbane Walls Graffiti and Street Art "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

The Art of Graffiti Writing

This is the final draft of the forward I was invited to write for a new book by Brisbane photojournalist, Toks Ojo. Toks has photographed and collated a vast amount of current graffiti/street art in Brisbane into Brisbane Walls, Graffiti and Street Art. The book is due for release later this year.

OJO_20170520_M3360

2018 will mark 20 years since I began an alchemists experiment with graffiti. I invited graffiti writers into a conservative enclave to publicly demonstrate their art. It was a bold and maybe nave move but it was the beginning of Jugglers, at that time a bi-monthly celebration of fine art, music, graffiti, comedy, poetry reading and coffee in, of all things, a north Brisbane suburban church context.

I was the minister of a large protestant congregation and I had begun feeling deeply frustrated with its sterile and utilitarian approach to the arts. Not only that church but the whole religious paradigm and its dualistic approach to life, spirituality and subsequently, art had become stuck. I needed a push through the door that was opening.

Jugglers effectively became my wide open door out of the restrictions of that paradigm into a new life where graffiti would feature as the writing on the wall and the metaphor for a new l...

The Murder of John Kennedys Mistress, Part 1 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

On October 12, 1964, Mary Pinchot Meyer, a Washington socialite, went for her usual jog along the Potomac River in a fairly deserted section of Washington DC and, for no apparent reason, she was shot twice at close range. She was neither raped nor robbed.

A witness, who heard screaming and shots ran to an embankment overlooking the scene, arrived in time to see a black man standing over Meyers body. He said the man stared at the woman for a bit, then put a dark object in his pocket, presumably a gun, and calmly walked away.

The witness, Henry Wiggins Jr., saw the gunman from a distance of 128.6 feet, and described him as a negro who was 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 185 pounds.

Not long afterward, the police arrested a negro and Wiggins positively identified him even though he was only 5 feet 3.5 inches, and weighed 130 pounds.

And there were many other problems with the case. The man, Ray Crump, Jr., was put on trial, and acquitted, though many still think he was guilty. Others have a much darker explanation for Meyers murder: It was a CIA operation. Some background:

Meyer was the late John F. Kennedys lover. Her closest friends believe she was responsible for Kennedys desire to make peace which was dangerously unpopular with the military industrial complex. She was under surveillance, and even found signs that strangers had been in her home while she was out. She seemed to know too much about the assassination. She most likely expressed what she knew in her diary. Immediately after her death, there was a frantic search for it.

Her sister found the diary and gave it to her husband, Ben Bradlee, who soon thereafter became the managing editor of the Washington Post. He turned it over to his friend, spook of spooks, CIA counterintelligence chief James Jesus Angleton.

In his 1995 memoir A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures, Bradlee revealed that Meyer had described her affair with JFK in detail. And he confessed that he conspired with Angleton to destroy the diary. At the trial of the accused, Bradlee described finding only a pocket book which contained the usual items, her wallet, keys, cosmetics, pencils and not a word about the diary. (United States District Court for the District of Columbia: United States of America vs. Ray Crump, Jr. Defendant; Criminal Case No. 930-64. Washington, D.C., July 20, 1965, pp.46-47.)

Meyers life was steeped in the CIA. She married Cord Meyer, who was recruited by Allen Dul...

Former Sputnik correspondent questioned by FBI in election-meddling probe "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The FBI recently questioned a former White House correspondent for the Russian state-funded Sputnik news agency about the organization's editorial operations in what appears to be part of its probe into an alleged Russian campaign to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Andrew Feinberg, who was fired from Sputnik in May, told RFE/RL on September 11 that he met with a lawyer from the Justice Department and an FBI agent for more than two hours on September 1. During that meeting, he said he turned over a thumb drive containing thousands of internal e-mails from his five months at Sputnik. He described the interview, which took place at the bureau's Washington field office, as voluntary and said the questions concerned Sputnik's internal operations. News of Feinberg's questioning and of the possible probe into whether Sputnik violated U.S. laws on foreign agents was first reported by Yahoo News. The Justice Department refused to comment on the interview or to confirm whether there was an investigation into Sputnik's operations. Set up in 2014 as part of a restructuring of Russian-government-funded news operations in the Rossiya Segodnya news group, Sputnik runs radio broadcasts and news websites in 30 languages. Feinberg told RFE/RL that, during his FBI interview, he was asked about how editorial decisions were made at Sputnik. He was also asked about U.S. operations at RIA Novosti, another Russian-funded news agency that was subsumed by Rossiya Segodnya during its 2014 restructuring.

Japans Abe to Launch $17-Billion Indian Bullet Train Project as Ties Deepen "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

NEW DELHI/TOKYO Japans Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will lay the foundation stone for Indias first bullet train in Prime Minister Narendra Modis home state this week, in a tightening of ties just days after New Delhi ended a dangerous military confrontation with China.

The move by Abe, who starts a two-day visit to India on Wednesday, highlights an early lead for Japan in a sector where the Chinese have also been trying to secure a foothold, but without much success.

Modi has made the 500-km- (311-mile-) long high-speed rail link between the financial hub of Mumbai and the industrial city of Ahmedabad in western Gujarat a centerpiece of his efforts to showcase Indias ability to build cutting-edge infrastructure.

The leaders will launch the start of work on the line on Thursday, Indias railways ministry said in a statement.

This technology will revolutionize and transform the transport sector, said Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, welcoming the prospects for growth brought by Japans high-speed shinkansen technology.

In Tokyo, a Japanese foreign ministry official told reporters, We would like to support Make in India as much as possible, referring to Modis signature policy to lure investors in manufacturing.

And for that, we want to do whats beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line and achieve economies of scale.

India would make all-out efforts to complete the line by August 2022, more than a year earlier than planned, the government said this week.

Apocalyptic September? Here Is A List Of 27 Major Disasters That Have Already Happened So Far This Month "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

by Michael Snyder; The Economic Collapse

Two major hurricanes, unprecedented earthquake swarms and wildfires roaring out of control all over the northwest United States what else will go wrong next? When I originally pointed to the month of September as a critical time, I had no idea that we would see so many catastrophic natural disasters during this time frame as well.

Hurricane Harvey just broke the all-time record for rainfall in the continental United States, Hurricane Irma is so immensely powerful that it has been called a lawnmower from the sky, vast stretches of our country out west are literally being consumed by fire, and the magnitude-8.2 earthquake that just hit Mexico was completely unexpected. As I have stated so many times before, our planet is becoming increasingly unstable, but most people simply do not understand what is happening.

My good friend Zach Drew is getting married next month, and I would encourage everyone to go wish him well on Facebook. On Friday, he posted the best summary of the major disasters that we have been experiencing so far this month that I have seen anywhere

US and Japan closer to importing beef to Australia "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

`FRESH and frozen beef from the US and Japan are a step closer to hitting Australian shores after 14 years.

Trade was suspended in the early 2000s due to fears about mad cow disease, or BSE, but a final Department of Agriculture review has found trade can resume if the countries meet Australias strict biosecurity requirements.

The review, released quietly on the departments website last month, stresses the US, Japan and fellow applicant the Netherlands will need their operations verified via a bacteriological testing program equivalent to that undertaken in Australia, in accordance with relevant Australian standards.

A spokeswoman from Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyces office said the decision to allow or disallow trade was not made by the minister.

As a member of the World Trade Organisation, and as a partner in free trade agreements, we have obligations to allow trade where the science says it is safe to do so, she said.

Trade is a two-way street: effective trade means ensuring that we can safely import produce from the trading partners that buy our exports.

The department reviewed the risks associated with 10 animal diseases, finding the biosecurity risk negligible. But Food Standards Australia New Zealand is still considering risks associated with e.coli and salmonella, which present a medium to high risk to public health from beef imports.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention lists one case of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow), found in Alabama earlier this year.

Mr Joyces spokeswoman said FSANZ had assessed the BSE risk for the three countries, and allowed heat-treated shelf-stable beef and beef products to be imported.

In the past seven years there is global evidence that BSE has been controlled in all previously BSE-affected countries. Extensive surveillance has shown that the numbers of BSE-affected cattle has fallen to a negligible number of cases per year, or none, she said.

Red Meat Advisory Council chair Don Mackay said he was confident imports would not begin unless the Government was absolutely certain all requirements were met.

The Government was put on very clear notice regarding what happened with the white spot outbreak with prawns, Mr Mackay said.

Mr Mackay said would not speculate on what the potential trade could mean for Australian beef markets, saying it would likely be some time before the US and Japan could meet Australias requirements.

No doubt theres a lot of work still to be done before a kilo of meat comes into this country, he said.

Certainly what theyre looking to bring here wont be low-cost produce they might be specialist prod...

The War On Terrorism Isnt Working "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over in the expectation of a different result, then our foreign policy surely qualifies as madness.

Since 2001, in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks, the United States has been in a state of constant warfare: the Afghan conflict has been ongoing since that time, the longest sustained combat in our history.

From Iraq to Syria to Somalia and beyond, US forces and their proxies are engaged in a war on terrorism that shows no signs of slowing down, only expanding.

And where has it gotten us?

In Afghanistan, more than half the country is under the control of the Taliban, the radical Islamist group that sheltered Osama bin Laden and they are now joined by ISIS, which has extended its tentacles into that country.

In Iraq, after our war of liberation, a civil war pitting Shiites against Sunnis is raging, and terrorist attacks are the norm. The Iranians have extended their sphere of influence into the country, and US troops are still fighting there, despite the much-heralded withdrawal.

The focus of US military action in the Middle East has now shifted to Syria, where a multi-sided civil war has been raging ever since the so-called Arab Spring.

There we have managed to destabilize the regime of Bashar al-Assad by supporting alleged moderate Islamists, while we simultaneously fight ISIS which is tacitly supported by our moderate proxies. The result has been a disaster of epic proportions: hundreds of thousands dead, as refugees pour out of the country and into Europe.

Far from winding down, the war on terrorism is constantly expanding. The latest front is in Yemen arguably the poorest country on earth where our Saudi allies, aided by the US, are slaughtering civilians, bombing funeral processions, and setting off a famine that will kill many thousands more.

And while al-Qaeda does indeed have an active franchise in Yemen, the Saudis arent targeting them theyre going after the Houthis, a religious sect that is neither Sunni nor Shiite, whose adherents are fighting both the Saudis and al-Qaeda.

The Houthi-Saudi war started because Saudi missionari...

Ahmedabad: A special SIT court hearing the 2002 Naroda Gram riot case today summoned BJP president Amit Shah to appear before it as a defence witness for former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani, who is one of the prime accused.

On a petition filed by Kodnani, special SIT judge P. B. Desai summoned Shah to appear before the court on September 18.

The court said it will not re-issue the summons in case Shah fails to present himself on a given date.

Kodnanis advocate Amit Patel submitted before the court the residential address of Shah in Thaltej area of Ahmedabad city, after which the court issued the summons to him on the same address.

Earlier, Kodnani had failed to give the address to which the summons to Shah were to be issued.

Her advocate had twice sought time for four days each to her to find out and submit the address on which the summons could be issued to Shah.

The court had in April allowed Kodnanis plea to have the summons issued to Shah and some others as witnesses in her defence.

In a stunning reversal from his campaign rhetoric, President Donald Trump declined to mention radical Islam on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as did the vice president, secretary of defense and attorney general.

The omissions were first noticed by Breitbart, which pointed out that Attorney-General Jeff Sessions came closest to using the terminology by stating that the terrorists sought to impose their speech codes, their religion, their theocracy.

In his speech at the Republican convention accepting the partys presidential nomination, Trump mentioned the Islamic basis of the jihadist threat four times. During the presidential campaign, Trump regularly attacked Hillary Clinton for declining to use the term radical Islam.

By omitting any mention of Islamism or jihad, the Trump Administrations language is even closer to that of the Obama Administration than Hillary Clinton, who defined the enemy as jihadists. President Obama refused to use any terminology associated with Islam at all.

The change represents a big triumph for National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, who fought tooth-and-nail against any Islam-themed language and pushes policies that are...

The Shotgun Method A Story of Mental Health Crisis in Iceland "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Whats it like to deal with mental health challenges in Iceland? What about if youre a young person in crisis? What on earth is the shotgun method?

My name is Svava Arnardttir and I want to tell you about my personal experience with the Icelandic mental health system. I am not here to tell you to stop taking psychiatric medication if you dont want to. I simply want us all to be informed consumers to have the power to make decisions and choose between many different choices. I ask you to keep an open mind and open ears.

Here is the list of psychiatric medications that I was prescribed, bought and ate for a five year period. I was 17 when I started, and 22 when I got out.

I was 17 in 2005. I was in junior college, had been fully committed to sports and was an overachiever in school. I started having difficulty catching my breath when working out, and sometimes in school. I thought I had exertion asthma but hadnt gone to the doctor. Then one evening, I was at home with my family watching TV. I meant to be relaxing after a long day but instead I couldnt breathe. It felt like I was choking. I couldnt get oxygen. I ended up being taken to the ER where it turned out I wasnt dying, there was nothing wrong with my body, it was all in my head! I had had a severe panic attack. I went to my doctor and was prescribed my first psychiatric medication. I was told I had a chemical imbalance in my brain. I was told that I would never recover, but by taking the medication, I could hope to feel a little better. I completely bought into this idea of brain chemistry. I was an obedient, good patient did everything my doctor told me.

Turns out the medicine didnt work well for me. I continued feeling worse and worse. Their response was to give me more medication and to try other brands and types. Still I continued feeling worse. Then we increased the dosage. Then we added other medication. We took some out, we added a few more in. I had all sorts of side effects. I got migraines and horrible, lifelike nightmares. My short term memory was giving out. I had difficulty concentrating. My mouth made so little saliva that my enamel was wearing out and I had to get extensive dental work. I had never gotten tooth decay before in my life! My eyesight changed rapidly, from -3 to -4, -5, -6. My ophthalmologist looked at my medication and immediately wanted me off three o...

We Revisit Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and by We I Mean Me, Alone, Like Always "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Today were taking a look back on one of the most influential rock albums of all time, Pet Sounds by The Beach boys!

Let me clarify. By we I am referring to three people. Namely me, myself, and I. Oh, yeah. The gangs all here. Lets do this.

Though officially credited as a Beach Boys album, many consider Pet Sounds to be a Brian Wilson solo project. In this respect its sort of like my entire life. Sure, on paper other people are involved. Family, peers, a network of friends. But at the end of the day its just one guy sitting in an apartment listening to records writing a Hard Style post. And thats fine!

Pet Sounds opens with perhaps its best single Wouldnt It Be Nice, a bombastic song that steps right on the gas of the albums landmark wall of sound aesthetic. Co-written by lyricist Tony Asher, this song is an ode to the pains of youth. Its central character lamenting about experiencing a love he knows hes not old enough for. Hearing it now I cant help but think of a few other things that would be nice. Like, wouldnt it be nice if I wasnt the only person I knew who thought sitting around listening to Pet Sounds on vinyl would be a fun group activity?

If youre anything like me youll find it and the two following tracks (Thats Not Me and Dont Talk) to be the perfect soundtrack to frantically double and triple checking that you havent accidentally missed a text from any one of the many, many people you reached out to about hanging out tonight. Then again, as is becoming devastatingly clear, no one is like me.

The History of Brainwashing is a Red Flag for Technotherapy "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From Aeon: In the 1950s, psychiatrist Donald Ewen Cameron developed a treatment called psychic driving, which involved removing distressing memories and pathological behaviors through an extensive regime of ECT, followed by subjecting patients to continuously repeated audio messages on a looped tape. The history of psychic driving, as well as the CIAs sponsorship of this treatment as part of the MK-ULTRA Project, serves as a warning of the potential dangers of merging psychiatry with technology.

Psychic driving might also tell us something about the future, not just the past, of psychological therapy. Few present-day psychiatrists find themselves preoccupied with issues of communism and brainwashing, but Camerons core belief in the inevitable merging of technology and psychiatry has proven remarkably resilient. This is perhaps seen most dramatically in the recent explosion of smartphone applications concerned with mental health, with some 10,000 apps on the market offering everything from mood trackers to mindfulness programmes, ambient noise generators to automated hypnosis. Enthusiastic advocates have been quick to praise these pocket-sized therapies as a timely solution to the budgetary pressures and long waiting lists of overstretched mental health services.

However, psychic driving introduces a note of caution to these celebrations. While exotic conspiracies of international espionage are unlikely to be uncovered, Camerons work reminds us that we ought to question whose interests, beyond benevolent healing, are at play. Beneath the optimistic rhetoric of this new wave of techno-therapy there is plenty to worry about: applications frequently lack expert medical oversight, few are supported by reliable studies gauging their effectiveness or even basic safety, and many have been found to leak or actively sell users sensitive health data to third parties. Clearly such issues must be interrogated further, and the history of psychic driving can bolster the necessary scepticism and dissent to do so.

On September 6, 2017, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Dr. Leroy Hulsey, Chair of UAFs Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, presented some damning findings and conclusions detailed in his teams September 2017 progress report regarding the collapse of World Trade Center building 7.

Over the past 16 years many highly respected academics and experts have come forward to challenge the official narrative on the collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers forwarded by the U.S. government with particular interest given to the collapse of WTC building 7.

The official government position elicited in the 2008 National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report holds that the collapse of all three towers was due to intense heat inside of the buildings.

Now, for the first time, an ongoing peer reviewed academic study, WTC 7 Evaluation is being conducted by Dr. J Leroy Husley of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Institute of Northern Engineering and it directly challenges the findings of the official NIST report.

MDMA Crossed a Hurdle on the Path to Being Legally Prescribed "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From Yahoo! Finance: The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has passed a major hurdle on the path to getting MDMA approved for medical use. The psychedelic has been granted the designation of breakthrough therapy, meaning that it will move toward the final phase of medical trials that could one day lead to prescription use of the drug to treat PTSD.

Psychedelic-based treatments offer an opportunity to dig down and get to the heart of the problems that drive long term mental illness in a much more effective way than our current model, which is take daily medications to mask the symptoms and stay just-about level without digging down, Sessa said.

Its a source of hope to many people struck by conditions like anxiety and depression especially those who havent responded to traditional treatments like talk therapy and antidepressants.

Beating The Drum For A Good Nuclear War With North Korea "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Washington D.C. (GPA)  Wars dont start these days with the invader/attacker saying We want war (even Hitler ginned up a false-flag attack as pretext for launching WW II). So Kim Jong Un is crazy, North Korea begging for war, and enough is enough. The drum beats on and justifications assemble themselves.

United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has proven herself to be one of the most hawkish U.S. representatives to the UN, likely a reflection of the increasingly hawkish veer of the U.S. President Donald Trump, who had originally campaigned on anti-interventionism.

On September 5th, following a nuclear weapon test conducted by North Korea a few days prior, Haley told the UN Security Council that the isolated Asian nation was begging for war, adding that the time for half measures had come to an end and enough is enough. She then asserted that war is never something the United States wants we dont want it now. But our countrys patience is not unlimited.

Haleys bellicose rhetoric closely followed similar statements made by Trump on Twitter on Sunday, in which he chided South Korea and Chinas appeasement approach towards rising tensions with Pyongyang and asserted that North Korean government officials only understand one thing (i.e., military force).

Having embraced his generals, and with little else at hand to buoy him, Trump seems increasingly war-bent.

Most mainstream media outlets and their associated pundits have found little trouble in agreeing that North Koreas leadership is crazy. Furthermore, the ease of a non-diplomatic i.e., military solution is also being touted by U.S. media, suggesting that the advantages of going to war with a nuclear power greatly outweigh the risks.

Those who have followed the U.S. forays into ill-fated military interventions over the last several decades may notice that this narrative sounds eerily familiar. Indeed, variations of this....

Why Not Ensure City Montessori Admits Disadvantaged Children Before Visiting It, Adityanath? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Lucknows City Montessori School (CMS) is the venue for an event to present sanitation awards on September 12. Organised by India Today, the event will see the participation of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, Vidhan Sabha speaker and state minister for law and justice Brijesh Pathak, mayor of Varanasi Ram Gopal Mohle and film personality Shilpa Shetty are participating.

For some time now, the CMS has been defying the Lucknow district magistrates order to admit children from disadvantaged groups and weaker sections to its various branches. Under section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2009, the school is is supposed to admit children to classes 1 to 8 free of cost. Thirteen Valmiki children were admitted in its Indira Nagar branch in 2015-16 because of a Supreme Courts direction. But the school has not admitted a single child on its own after that, even though orders of admission of 18, 55 and 296 children for the academic years 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively, are pending.

Ed Rogers: Fossil Fuel Lobbyist by Day, WaPo Columnist by Night "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Washington, D.C. (FAIR Ed Rogers continues to embarrass the Washington Post.

What is the point of Ed Rogers, the Washington Posts most conflict-ridden, mediocre columnist (FAIR.org4/23/15)? He doesnt add a lot to the discourse, his boilerplate Republican talking points could be better written by any number of Heritage fellows, he shills for Trump in the most boring ways possible, andmost glaringly of allis an actual paid lobbyist for an assortment of sleazy industry interests, via his lobbying firm BGR Group.

So why does a major paper feel the need to continue to give him column inches? Rogers has major conflicts of interest, as AlterNet and Media Matters have noted: Among many other infractions, he neglected to mention his firms $500,000 fee from the Saudi regime while boosting Trumps PR trip there, and promoted the shiny new weapon systems of his client Raytheon on the night Trump used them to bomb the Syrian Air Force.

When he does disclose conflicts, it renders the rest of his writing limp and risible. Take his latest right-wing missive (9/5/17) lamenting the lurch to the left of the Democratic Party, which offers up one of the greatest self-owns in the history of the Postopinion section:

The Danger of Relations Between Israel and Sunni Arab States "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Tel Aviv (MEMO While the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has gloated in the past about the great development in the relations between Israel and what he calls the Sunni Arab states during his rule, he made sure during his speech last week during the Jewish New Year to highlight how far these countries have gone in their mission to improve cooperation with Tel Aviv.

In his speech, Netanyahu said: What is actually happening with the Arab states has never happened in our history, even when we signed agreements. The cooperation between Israel and Arab states exists in various ways and different levels.

Benjamin Netanyahu

In order to entice his listeners and push them to imagine the nature of the development that has occurred in the relations with the Arab states, Netanyahu noted that this cooperation is still not visible above the surface. Away from the public eye, there is much more than during any other period in the history of Israel. This is a tremendous change. The entire world is changing.

It seems ironic that Netanyahus comments were made to coincidence with the Jewish Radios revelation of a prominent Gulf state official making a secret visit to Israel in order to meet with Israeli officials to discuss political and security issues.

I wont be saying anything new by mentioning that Israeli and western media outlets have recently spoken excessively of the manifestations of the secret and large-scale cooperation between Israel and many Arab states, including those with diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv and those who do not have such relations.

PewDiePie Accidentally Puts on Entire KKK Uniform in Middle of Game Stream "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

BRIGHTON, U.K. While streaming a heated match of PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds, YouTube celebrity PewDiePie, in a fit of rage over being killed, impulsively put on an entire historically accurate KKK Uniform, today.

The stream, which showed the YouTube celebrity carefully putting on an elaborate KKK uniform for about fifteen minutes in the middle of a PUBG squad match, caused a massive controversy on social media sites within a matter of minutes and led to an apology vlog within a few hours of the event.

Hey Bro Army. So you might have heard people were a little upset with me yesterday because of a mistake I made, PewDiePie said in an apology video titled Woah a lot of people saw me wearing a decked out KKK outfit so I guess I need to say something.

The video, which was six minutes long, included a recap of what happened over a continuous EDM beat playing in the background.

Let me just say that I am not in the Ku Klux Klan and also I dont hate blacks. I was playing PUBG and after I got killed by some obvious stream watcher, so I was just reacting off the top of my head, PewDiePie said over an image that said KKK=NOT PART OF BRO ARMY that accidentally had PewDiePies face over the word Not.

Read More From Hard Drive, The Only Ethical Gaming Journalism Site on The Internet:

I had absolutely no intention of putting on that KKK uniform, piece by piece, while playing PUBG. It was a heat of the moment mistake that happened in a split hour, he explained to his fans.

Over the course of the video that frequently mentioned how many subscribers he has, White Supremacist puns, and joking how much he looks like he belongs in the KKK, PewDiePie made clear in the video that desp...

4 Ways to get Started Building Strong Towns "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

So you've been reading Strong Towns for a while now. Maybe you even took the next step and became a member (if so, thanks!) ... But now what? Here are four basic things you can do to get on the right track to being a strong citizen who is working to make your town better:

Source: Sarah Kobos

Source: Sarah Kobos

1. Find a place you love that needs you.

The drive to build strong towns requires one thing to begin with: a love for your town. If you aren't passionate about your community, you probably won't have the lasting motivation to help make it better. So find a place you love that needs you and then figure out exactly what it needs from you.

For a healthy dose of inspiration, read Strong Towns member Sarah Kobos' story about how she found an old house in her city that needed some serious attention and used that as a catalyst to help understand and strengthen the neighborhood around it.

2. Start with your story.

If you're hoping to build a strong town and convince others around you to participate in that, you're going to need more than an article about the Growth Ponzi Scheme or a graphic illustrating tax productivity. We want you to take what you learn from those resources and then apply it to your own town, with all its unique challenges and quirks. To do that, you need to start with your story. Data is important, but if you don't have a compelling narrative about why your town needs to grow stronger and why you care about its future, you won't convince very many people.

Read Strong Towns member Mike McGinn's thoughts on how to build a persuasive case for changing your city to get started.

Why Good Hygiene and Sanitation Keeps You Safer After an Emergency "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

ReadyNutrition Guys and Gals, the Grand Funk were going to be speaking about today is not that of the Grand Funk Railroad, the Band.  Rather it is the funk of sweat, dirt, and grime that all of us experience firsthand throughout our existence.  I am relating it to the bush, or the outdoors/forest/jungle when you are out and about in a survival situation.  There are a few pointers here that would be good to observe, especially considering the world situation and how close we are to a war with China or North Korea.

Hygiene in the field.  So, what?  So, it may be the difference between life and death.  Everyone will recognize and concede the point that hygiene helps protect you from germs and diseases, as well as preventing the body from falling apart.  This is common sense.  But there are other reasons to keep clean that might not be clear.

When you sweat, your body uses apocrine and eccrine glands.  The eccrine secrete primarily water and salt.  The apocrine glands, on the other hand, are mostly found in the hairy areas of the bodyand these throw out (in addition to water and salt), oily secretions that have pheromones in them.  The secretions from the apocrine glands tend to be eaten and metabolized by bacterial flora on the skinand produce a hideous odor.

Im here to tell youyou can smell a stinky man a long way offseveral hundred feet when the wind is right.  Be advised: in an SHTF/collapse scenario, whether its foreign troops or neighborhood maraudersif you can smell them, they can smell you.  It is very important to clean the heaviest apocrine gland-laden areas of your bodyyour groin, armpits, buttocks.  You should wash them (a sponge bath at the minimum) at least once a day, especially after much work or physical exertion.

Deodorant is finebut not an antiperspirant.  The antiperspirants have Aluminum and Magnesium in them to keep you from perspiring.  This is not good.  You need to perspire, as the sweat removes toxins from your body, as well as cooling you off (thermoregulation).  For this reason, a mild deodorant will work well, one with some alcohol in it to help kill the germs that feed upon your sweat.  For soaps, use a clean, non-fragranced soap in the field.  I always used Ivory when I was in the service.  It is effective and doesnt stick out with a fragrance.

That last part can be detrimental, especially for you guys and gals that like to use cologne or p...
