Anne Enright: Diary "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In 2015, the novelist Catherine Nichols sent the opening pages of the book she was working on to fifty literary agents. She got so little response she decided to shift gender and try as George instead. The difference amazed her. A third of the agents who saw his query wanted to see more, where my numbers never did shift from one in 25.

David Thomson: Eighteen Hours in Vietnam "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Once, every American knew the outline and the stock images of this chronicle. Because of largely unhindered television news coverage and the cameras that soldiers carried with them, this was the most visible war ever fought. Never again would the government allow reporters to go wherever daring took them.

Thomas Meaney: Merkels Kingdom "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Her trick is to avoid the countrys root problems while treating the symptoms more skilfully than any conservative politician before her has ever managed. The media, meanwhile, unwilling to address the difficulties caused by Germanys position as the reluctant hegemon of the Continent, or the growing sense of lurking inconsistencies in the gospel of Atlanticism, prefer endless celebration of the leader: the intellectual, strong, patient, grounded, wry, compassionate, tough, reality-grasping, scientific, opera-loving, Bismarckian wunder-Kanzlerin on whom nothing is lost.

Swati Dhingra and Nikhil Datta: How Not to Do Trade Deals "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

It would be sensible to prioritise a trade deal with the EU. Countries have always traded the most with their biggest, closest neighbours. This is by far the most reliable fact about international trade and holds true no matter which set of countries, time period or sector (goods, services, e-commerce, foreign investments) is looked at. Given that the EU is within swimming distance from the UK, has a population of more than 500 million and a GDP of almost $20 trillion (double that of China), an equivalent replacement is effectively impossible.

Google Chrome 63, expected to be released sometime around December, will label resources delivered over the FTP protocol as Not secure, a member of the Chrome security team has shared.

Mal gucken.

iPhone 8, iPhone X, and rapid charging "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

As if laying out $1,000 on a new iPhone X isnt expensive enough, Apple hasnt even included the equipment necessary to benefit from its new fast-charging capability.

Ignore the hasnt even included rhetoric and read on.

The feature is available in the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X unveiled this week by Apple. It means a flat battery can reach a half charge within 30 minutes, which is as fast as new flagship Android devices that support fast charging.

Apples specs page for the all three devices says theyre fast-charge capable. But then, in fine print, Apple declares that it tested fast-charging on the devices with Apple USB-C power adapters, and lists its 29W Model A1540, 61W Model A1718, and 87W Model A1719 power adapters.

Bottom line, the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X will rapid charge if you use a 29W adapter, which you likely have if you own a MacBook or MacBook Pro with a USB-C port. Not certain of this, but I suspect they will also rapid-charge on an iPad 29W charger.

And, I also suspect less expensive 3rd party chargers will be hitting the shelves as well, though do a bit of homework first to make sure the chargers are properly tested and recommended by folks that do that sort of thing.

The incredible architectural secrets of Steve Jobs Theater "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

[VIDEO] Lance Ulanoff, Mashable:

Apple explained that, yes, there were some interesting acoustics in the space, one that, incredibly, doesnt have a single column to hold up the ceiling or to slice up the sound, but I might have noticed that there were no echoes during the iPhone X launch event. People, they said, act as a natural sound absorber. If there were a small gathering, though, Apple might choose to put a bit of temporary acoustic absorption up on the walls.

What you see when you look at the Steve Jobs Theater from the outside is simplicity in the extreme. Inside, theres no visible frame, pipes, wires, or speakers to break the illusion. The secret, though, is that its all there.

The carbon fiber roof is supported by the glass frame. Foster + Partner also hid the wires and pipes in plain sight. Twenty of the thin joints separating each glass panel house specially-designed water pipes for the sprinkler system, itself hidden under dozens of recessed circles in the carbon fiber roof. The remaining joints are home to wiring for power, data, and audio.

This is just a taste. Great read. Take a look at the video embedded in the main Loop post. The elevator turns as it goes up and down. A magical space.

How the Equifax breach affects your enrollment in the iPhone Upgrade Program "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Lory Gil, iMore:

Recently, Equifax announced it had been compromised and as many as 143 million U.S. residents may have had their personal information exposed, including home addresses, birth dates, credit account information, and Social Security numbers. One suggestion from the credit reporting agency, as well as many banks and credit card companies, is to freeze your credit report.

A credit freeze is a way for you to restrict access to your credit report to protect you from identity theft. If youve put a freeze on your credit report, it doesnt affect your credit score or keep you from being able to apply for loans. There are some caveats though.

If youve put a credit freeze on your credit report, there are a few things you should know about applying for your iPhone Upgrade Program loan.

This is worth reading, certainly for the specifics on the iPhone Upgrade Program, but also to wrap your head around the implications of freezing your credit report.

My 2 cents: If you choose to not freeze your credit report, do a regular check on your credit report to see who is running credit checks on you. Believe it or not, there are companies out there that sell product purely on credit to someone who has the right credentials. In other words, they will ship out an Xbox if you have the right combination of social security number and other identifying personal information AND if they can run a credit check.

Freeze your credit and that cant happen. If you dont freeze your credit, pay attention. Identity theft is a painful thread to unwind.

Ad groups blasting Apple for Safari cookie blocking tech sabotage "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Ad Week:

From the perspective of the folks whose living depends on ad sales, I do understand this anger. But.

From the perspective of the user, the ability not to be tracked is absolutely fair. I do not want to be tracked. Period. Dont try to sell me on the supposed benefits of tracking my behavior. To me, it smacks of snake oil.

When I see an ad for something I momentarily glanced at on Amazon appearing again and again as a browser ad, I dont see that as a benefit. Instead, I see it as psychological manipulation. You are not showing me that ad repeatedly to help me. Instead, you simply want the money that ad brings in.

My ultimate reaction to this article is a sense of appreciation for Apple. While they certainly are not perfect, again and again I get the feeling that they have my back in this relationship. More than anything else, that sense keeps me on board the ecosystem.

Trump Fans Are Crying In Their Milk After Their Hero Breaks Yet Another Promise To Them (TWEETS) "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Trump made a bad decision, or so his ardent followers seem to think. His attempts to work something out with Congressional Democrats on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and also his remarks that current construction on his stupid border wall involves mostly existing fencing, have set off their ire. Big-time and small-time MAGAsh*ts alike are crying today, because their rigid, purist minds suffer from severe tunnel vision that doesnt include Trump doing, well, what hes done. They want Trump to do what he promised and damn the consequences to millions who arent like them.

Take Joe Walsh, for example. Walsh is a former U.S. Representative from Illinois 8th district, but his big claim to fame is being a deadbeat dad. All he wants is for Trump to cut his taxes and build the wall. With Trumps latest tweets on DACA and the wall, though, hes ready to abandon Trump and throw his support toprobably someone worse:

Less than a month after I quit, they announced the biggest heist of personal information in history affecting 143 million Americans. Thats way more than the number of Americans working full-time jobs today 127 million. When you go onto their website, they have a link to check if your personal data was compromised. Originally, I was so mad with them that I wasnt about to go on their website, especially since at first they put a sneaky clause in the notorious Terms and Conditions that if you used their website, you couldnt sue them later on. That sounded like good old Equifax to me so I stayed away. But, a story on Market Watch made me rethink that. First of all Congressional and public pressure had forced the company to take back the evil Terms and Conditions clause. But secondly, as Maria LaMangas piece pointed out, last year, 15.4 million people got hit with identity theft a rise of 16% over 2015. The average cost to each fraud victim was just over a thousand dollars to get things squared away. Ouch! The coming year is going to be another record catch for data fraudsters, and there have been so many breaches in the last few years that you might never get things squared away. How did it happen? The Racial Wealth Gap Is Leading To An Almost-Nonexistent Middle Class "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Julia Conley for Mint Press News - With people of color projected to make up the majority of Americans by 2043, a new study warns against policies that keep many black and Latino households out of the middle class. A new study finds that if the racial wealth divide is left unaddressed, the median wealth for black Americans will fall to $0 by 2053, with Latino Americans reaching the same median wealth two decades later. According to the report by the Institute for Policy Studies and Prosperity Now, the wealth gap between people of color and their white counterparts is showing no sign of narrowing in the coming yearseven as racial demographics in the U.S. are rapidly shifting, with people of color projected to make up the majority of the population by 2043. In the next three years, black households are projected to lose 18 percent of their median net worth, while white families are expected to gain about three percent more wealth. The report, The Road to Zero-Wealth, defines middle-class wealth as a household net worth of $68,000 to $204,000, and notes the disconnect between income and wealth: a median income for ones racial background does not guarantee entry into the middle-class. White households in the middle-income quintilethose earning $37,201-61,328 annuallyown nearly eight times as much wealth ($86,100) as Black middle-income earners ($11,000) and ten times that of their Latino counterparts ($8,600), write the authors.

Anti-Fascism Is Self-Defense : A General-Purpose Flier "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In response to an epidemic of fascist rallies and recruitment drives around the US, we have prepared this general-purpose flier. You can mass-produce this to distribute at anti-fascist mobilizations and everywhere else it is necessary to explain the importance of confronting fascists.

Anti-fascism means defending our communities from racists, xenophobes, homophobes, transphobes, and other bigots. Anti-fascist organizing requires no special skills. It isnt limited to any one political identity.

Far-right groups dont actually want dialogue. They aim to spread paranoia to escalate the ongoing violence against marginalized people. Anti-fascists aim to deny them any platform for doing this, even when fascists use code words instead of openly identifying themselves. The issue is not free speechit is whether we stand idly by while they recruit for violent attacks.

We must confront the fascist menace. Organizing against them doesnt make them stronger; fascists have gained momentum precisely because theyve met so little opposition recently. Everyone must be free to decide for himself or herself how to go about resisting fascism. The far right claims that anti-fascists are the same as fascists because they meet force with force. But just as a firefighter is not a fire, an anti-fascist is not a fascist.

Police are part of the problem. They kill a thousand people every year; they imprison and deport millions, disproportionately targeting people of color, tearing apart families and communities. When police coordinate with racist militias to run security at far-right rallies, this is not an aberration, but an example of the normal relationship between police and fascists. The US government is already implementing the fascist agenda more effectively than a group like the KKK ever could.

Dont count on a return to normal. Its not clear yet how far things will go. It wont help to call on the courts for assistance; any power we give the government can end up in the hands of fascists. We need to establish bonds of solidarity across difference, learn to care for each other, and build the infrastructure we need to live and fight as the political crisis deepens.

Anti-fascism means more than fighting in the street. It is an orientation toward life, a practice of collective resistance. It entails rai...

CVE-2017-5638 Apache Struts vulnerability is the root cause behind Equifax data breach "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Its official, the Equifax data breach case was caused by the exploitation of the CVE-2017-5638 Apache Struts vulnerability.

The Equifax data breach case was solved, that incident was caused by the exploitation of the CVE-2017-5638 Apache Struts vulnerability. The vulnerability affects the Jakarta Multipart parser upload function in Apache and could be exploited by an attacker to make a maliciously crafted request to an Apache web server.  Just after the experts from the Cisco Talos publicly disclosed it, proof-of-concept exploit code for  Metasploit was made available allowing anyone to launch public scans. The attacks leveraging the flaw spiked and in one case crooks leveraged on the flaw to deliver Cerber ransomware of the vulnerable servers.

The vulnerability was fixed back in March, but the company did not update its systems, the thesis was also reported by an Apache spokeswoman to the Reuters agency.

The website of Equifax was updated only Wednesday while the company and law enforcement were investigating the incident.

Equifax has been intensely investigating the scope of the intrusion with the assistance of a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to determine what information was accessed and who has been impacted. We know that criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability. The vulnerability was Apache Struts CVE-2017-5638. We continue to work with law enforcement as part of our criminal investigation, and have shared indicators of compromise with law enforcement. reads the statement published by the company on its website.

Equifax data breach

Shortly after the Equifax data breach, security experts pointed out different possible causes for the incident, including the possible exploitation of the recently fixed CVE-2017-9805 Apache Struts vulnerability or a still unknown zero-day flaw.

Last week, security researchers with the firm Baird published a report that supported the thesis of the exploitation of a...

At Event of EPO SLAPP Firm, a Suggestion That the UPC Should be Scrapped Because Its Stuck "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

TPP Is Dead. What Now?

Summary: Just like the TPP, the UPC is now in a potentially fatal deadlock, so people with a stake in the outcome consider starting again (almost from scratch)

THE EPO keeps lying about the UPC (giving the false impression that its about to start). It will do it again later this month in Canada.

Not everyone is so easily fooled; In a Mishcon de Reya patent seminar, according to patent maximalists, Nina OSullivan questions if it is time to scrap the #UPC & start again? Maybe another rebrand while youre at it? Weve lost track of all the names it used to have

Its interesting that Mishcon de Reya is holding this seminar because this is the firm which the EPO hired to bully/monitor me!They will have to restart and get signatures all over again. As the UK cannot ever join (Brexit). And that too is no guarantee of progress, for all sorts of reasons we listed here in past years and months.

Its interesting that Mishcon de Reya is holding this seminar because this is the firm which the EPO hired to bully/monitor me! (which they did, I caught them stalking me too)

As we noted here before, Mishcon de Reya is also professionally connected to the UPC/Brexit (and Microsoft), just like the other law firm that the EPO sent out to threaten me several times two years ago (Fieldfisher, which has a stake in the UPC).

Its a small world, isnt it?

Like CETA and other undemocratic institutions, Benjamin Henrion commented on the above, UPC should be shot in the head.

We often compare the UPC to TPP (...

U.S. Air Force Is Spraying 6 Million Acres With Chemicals In Response To Harvey "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Whitney Webb for Eco Watch - While the Pentagon has framed its efforts to "assist" as seeking to eliminate a potential human health risk, the particular chemical it is using to control insect populations is likely to do more harm than good. According to the Air Force, the mosquito control protocol involves spraying the "Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved and regulated material, Naled," which the Air Force insists will not be used in amounts large enough to "cause any concern for human health." However, the insecticide Naled, manufactured and sold by a strategic partner of Monsanto, is currently banned in the European Union due to the "unacceptable risk" it presents to human health. Naled is a known neurotoxin in animals and humans, as it inhibits acetylcholinesterasean enzyme essential to nerve function and communicationand has even been known to have caused paralysis. Mounting scientific evidence, including a recent Harvard study, has also pointed to Naled's responsibility for the mass die-off of North American bees. Just one day of Naled spraying in South Carolina killed more than 2.5 million bees last year. Yet, the most concerning consequence Naled poses for human health is the chemical's ability to cross the placental barriermeaning that Naled freely crosses from mother to fetus.

Protect Your Information with a VPN. Use Promo Code: bill still for 20% OFF Good afternoon, Im still reporting on: Imran Awan Hid Secret Server From Capitol Cops, 1788 Synopsis: When the secret history of the last 25 years is written our children will be astonished at the foolishness of their parents that would be us - to have allowed all this to happen. According to investigative reporter Luke Rosiak, writing in the Daily Caller, the ongoing revelations surrounding the investigation of Imran Awan, the IT guy of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the former Chair of the Democratic National Committee, have now expanded into a full-blown espionage investigation. Apparently, Awan was dumping every scrap of classified intelligence information that he could get his hands on from the Democrat members of the House Intelligence Committee and elsewhere into an illegal Dropbox account an account that any foreign intelligence service could peruse and purchase from if Awan gave them access. That is why such Dropbox accounts are prohibited in Congressional Offices. To get around this prohibition, Awan set up a secret private server hmmm, where have we heard that term before??? - that was connected directly to the House Democratic Caucus. Via this route, Awan had admin access to all emails and office computers of 45 members of Congress even after Capital Police pulled his credentials and tried to shut off his access. According to the Daily Caller, data was taken from this secret server and transferred to Awans Dropbox account to which investigators may still not have access because it was a private account. In the spring of 2016, House IT administrators discovered that the Awans were allegedly falsifying purchase orders that is, stealing from the government. As the investigators were following the money trail, they discovered the secret server. When they asked for an image of this server to check it out, according to a senior official involved in the investigation who spoke with the Daily Caller: We asked for an image of the server, and they deliberately turned over a fake [image]. They were using the House Democratic Caucus as their central service warehouse  It was a breach. The data was completely out of [the members] possession. Does it mean it was sold to the Russians? Ethnic cleansing and the price of silence "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

For years Rohingya have been fleeing Myanmar by any means possible. It is time to re-examine theses advanced by Arendt and Staub, taking the role of bystanders far more seriously.

All rights reserved.Archbishop Desmond Tutus condemnation of fellow Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi for her silence in the face of the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya has stirred the worlds conscience. If the political price of your ascension to the highest office in Myanmar is your silence, the price is surely too steep, he wrote.

For decades, the Rohingya have faced persecution in Burma. Stripped of their nationality in 1982 they have been repeatedly victimised at the hands of the military and local fanatics who are now burning their villages. In addition to the physical attacks, since losing their rights to citizenship the Rohingya have been denied a host of other rights, including the right to marriage, freedom of movement, access to hospitals and schools, and state protection.  All of this has precipitated their exodus from Myanmar.

Bangladesh has however been a far cry from sanctuary. In 2010 Physicians for Human Rights reported how once in Bangladesh the Rohingya were forced into bonded labour or languished in make-shift camps and suffered serious malnutrition. Others were pushed back by the police into Myanmar.  Like many other states, Bangladesh has been quickly constructing a border...

California Legislature Passes Bill To Punish Elder-Care Workers Who Dont Use Trans Pronouns "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

There was a time when I thought no rule of grammar could possibly inspire more ardent debate than the Oxford comma. But California once again proves me wrong.

State representatives elected by the special, especially tan snowflakes of the Golden State have just passed the nations first state laws governing pronoun usage.

SB 219, which passed the State Assembly on September 12 and has already passed the Senate, proposes to fine or jail employees of long-term or intermediate care facilities who repeatedly and willfully refuse to use a preferred gender pronoun:

This bill would enact the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Long-Term-Care Facility Residents Bill of Rights. Among other things, the bill would make it unlawful, except as specified, for any long-term care facility to take specified actions wholly or partially on the basis of a persons actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, including, among others, willfully and repeatedly failing to use a residents preferred name or pronouns after being clearly informed of the preferred name or pronouns. [Emphasis added.]

There Are No Religious Exemptions In SB 219

Although this technically wouldnt criminalize using the wrong pronoun, violating this item in the patients bill of rights for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly would carry a fine of up to $1000 or a year in jail. As Amy Swearer noted in the Daily Signal, in true California style, SB 219 carries no religious exemptionsnot for nursing homes run by religious institutions, nor even individual doctors. The only exception it makes is for professionally reasonable clinical judgment.

Additionally, facility staff may not Prohibit a resident from using, or harass a resident who seeks to use or does use, a restroom available to other persons of the same gender identity, regardless of whether the resident is making a gender transition or appears to be gender-nonconforming. Harassment includes, but is not limited to, requiring a resident to show identity documents in order to gain entrance to a restroom available to other persons of the same gender identity [emphasis added].

In other words, a provider concerned about protecting vulnerable residents co...

John Le Carrs Latest Depicts A Spy Who Should Have Stayed In The Cold "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Former British spy and famed author John Le Carr is back with a new book called A Legacy of Spies. This is basically the story-within-the-story that was originally told in Le Carrs seminal 1963 Cold War novel, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. A Legacy of Spies also interweaves elements of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Its being billed as the return of illustrious spymaster George Smiley.

The new book opens with a quote attributed to German philosopher Martin Heidegger: Every man is born as many men and dies as a single one. Thats kind of the highlight, because the story basically goes downhill from there. Thats no offense to Le Carr, who is clearly a gifted writer and deserves real respect for authoring a book in his mid-80s.

A Legacy Of Spies is told from the first-person point of view of one Peter Guillam as he recounts the tale (or, more accurately, is made to recount the tale) of top-secret Operation Windfall mounted against East German Stasi intelligence services in the late 1950s and early 60s. The Stasi, or Ministerium fr Staatssicherheit (Ministry for State Security), was an iron-fisted and paranoid spy apparatus that dominated East German life for decades prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The book is basically one big drawing back of a curtain on a slow-motion nightmare of broken lives in the intelligence community during the Cold War. It ties up the loose ends and fills in the backstory of prior novels.

Le Carr decided to take Guillam from being Smileys left hand to the main narrator because he wanted to tell the story from another perspective, plus Smiley has gone missing in this novel. The narrator is speaking in old age from his retirement in rural France...

Apple Is Turning Its Stores Into Town Squares. Is This The Future Of Shopping? "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

What is a store for? Its definition appears to be changing, increasingly illusory, as consumers embrace digitalization and the virtual.

For many, running to the grocery store is replaced by ordering groceries on Amazon Fresh. While trips to the shopping mall are still relatively popular, depending on where one lives, many malls are now ghosts of themselves: empty holes of space, surrounded by a mass of unused parking lot.

As the world increasingly turns to computers for an easy shopping alternative, retail stores are attempting to reinvent themselves: to assert their usefulness and relevance in a digitalized economy. But many seem to be finding their answer to this dilemma not by burying into retail practices of the last several decades, but rather by reinventing their stores experience entirely. Take Nordstrom, for example.

A Nordstrom With No Clothes

Nordstrom just announced their creation of a store without merchandise last week: a 3,000-square-foot space called Nordstrom Local which would offer experiential amenities, such as a spa and a bar, hair salon and tailor.

Stylists will be on hand to guide shoppers to a personalized wardrobe, which customers can then order online to be delivered to the store that same day, reports the Washington Post. Or the stylists will visit one of the nine local traditional Nordstrom locations to retrieve the purchase. The idea is to keep shoppers from feeling overwhelmed by too much choice.

Its a fascinating idea, especially at a time when online retail stores offer a mind-numbing array of choices. We have more options than ever beforebut that doesnt mean shoppers are happier than ever before. We still have to return clothes that dont fit, dont work, or dont look like they were advertised. As people experience information overload online, they increasingly turn to expert curatorsvia newsletters, podcasts, and blogsto give them the most important information of the day. Maybe this is what shoppers want, too.

Retailers are, very consciously, promoting these in-store experiences, Joe Pinsker writes for The Atlantic. Its a reaction to the fact that buying is now something that can be done anywhere, and that reaction can be detected in a linguistic shift.

When A Store Becomes A Tow...

Syria: US-Led Coalition Use Of White Phosphorus May Amount To War Crime "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Staff of Amnesty International - The US-led coalitions use of white phosphorus munitions on the outskirts of al-Raqqa, Syria is unlawful and may amount to a war crime, Amnesty International can confirm after verifying five videos of the incident. The videos, published online on 8 and 9 June, showed the coalitions artillery strike using the munitions over the civilian neighborhoods of Jezra and el-Sebahiya. International humanitarian law prohibits the use of white phosphorus near civilians. The use of white phosphorus munitions by the US-led coalition gravely endangers the lives of thousands of civilians trapped in and around al-Raqqa city, and may amount to a war crime under these circumstances. It can cause horrific injuries by burning through flesh and bone and can pose a threat even weeks after being deployed by reigniting and burning at extremely high temperatures, said Samah Hadid, Middle East Director of Campaigns at Amnesty International. The US-led forces must immediately investigate artillery strikes on Jezra and el-Sebahiya and take all possible measures to protect civilians. The use of white phosphorus in densely populated areas poses an unacceptably high risk to civilians and would almost invariably amount to indiscriminate attacks. Amnesty International verified and cross-checked five videos that surfaced on 8 and 9 June 2017. The videos clearly show different angles of a white phosphorus air-burst and the same areas being targeted by burning elements of white phosphorus landing upon low-level buildings.

Security Firm Zerodium Offering $1 Million To Hack Tor Browser "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Zerodium offers $1 million for zero-day exploits targeting Tor Browser

A U.S. based start-up security firm announced a new bug bounty program on Wednesday where it is offering a total of $1 million in rewards to security researchers to identify zero-day exploits in the Tor Browser on security-focussed Tails Linux and Windows.

The start-up security firm, Zerodium is known for buying security flaws and zero-day vulnerabilities from researchers and selling the information to government customers.

ZERODIUM, the premium zero-day acquisition platform, announces and hosts a Tor Browser Zero-Day Bounty. ZERODIUM will pay a total of one million U.S. dollars ($1,000,000) in rewards to acquire zero-day exploits for Tor Browser on Tails Linux and Windows. reads the announcement published by ZERODIUM. The bounty is open until November 30th, 2017 at 6:00pm EDT, and may be terminated prior to its expiration if the total payout to researchers reaches one million U.S. dollars ($1,000,000).

The highest individual bounty offered by the company is $250,000 to any researcher who can provide the company with an exploit that allows the attacker to hack a target whos using the Tor Browser with high security settings on Linux Tails and Windows. Other small bounties range between $75,000 (for exploits that only work for either Windows or Tails, and work only with Javascript allowed, for example, making them easier to develop) and $200,000.

Today, ZERODIUM sets the bar even higher with a new technical challenge: develop a fully functional zero-day exploit for Tor Browser with JavaScript BLOCKED! Exploits for Tor Browser with JavaScript allowed are also accepted/eligible but have lower payouts (see below). continues the announcement.

Watching William Friedkins Documentary About Exorcism Can Make You Believe In God "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist, is releasing a new documentary, The Devil and Father Amorth, detailing a real-life exorcism. Last year for Vanity Fair he wrote about filming it, in an article as frightening as it is intriguing.

Friedkin received special permission from the Vaticans chief exorcist, Father Amorth, to film him performing an exorcism on a young Italian woman. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival in late August, and has yet to be widely released, but by all reports, the documentary is disturbing. Friedkin not only captures the demonic possession on film, but interviews leading psychiatrists, who find his footage to be inexplicable within given medical language.

The fact that such things happen regularly in the modern world jars our complacent sense of reality. While someone is binge-watching The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt, someone else is writhing on a couch, screaming in an inhuman register, We are an army! Our name is legion! Ive known quite a few atheists who, while unmoved by the idea of God, seem to be afraid of the Devil and conscientiously avoid horror films.

Manifestations of Evil Illuminate the Supernatural

People with no belief in the supernatural are capable of being scared by demon-possessed teens, vengeful spirits from Native American burial grounds, sewer-dwelling evil clowns, and demonic puppets when they are presented on the screen or the page. Why? If these things are utterly outside the realm of plausibility, wouldnt it make more sense to be afraid of beings that are found within nature (rattlesnakes, bears, Kim Jong Un, serial killers) while laughing off this Satan business as completely ridiculous, otherworldly nonsense?

Despite what their intellects say, supposed skeptics still fall prey to a primal fear of something beyond mind and matter. The fear of cosmic evilof evil that is more than just bad neural wiring in the brain of a murdereris innate within us all. It is a healthy and sane emotion.

In the modern world, we are taught that the entirety of nature is mechanical, operating according to the laws of physics as neatly as a plastic Mouse Trap contraption. This leaves little room for authentic evilor for authentic good. It is an idea we inherited from the Enlightenment: the world is simply a machine that God set up and put into motion, without interfering further in its operation.

Now, taking this a step further, secularists tend to see the world as a machine without an inventor. Even the human mind is just an amped-up calculator: The mind is a computer, declares Harvards Stephen Pinker, while philosopher Daniel Dennett claims to have explained consciousness entirely in physical terms (falsely, by the way...

Leah Remini Trains The Big Guns On Scientology In Latest Episode "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The first season of Leah Remini and Mike Rinders A&E series exposing the Church of Scientology had one aim: to explain the evils of the organization, which in no way is actually a church. The ratings and reception were better than anyone anticipated, and soon, a second season was ordered. Where once speaking out against Scientology could spell the end of a Hollywood career, the times, they are a-changin, as most clearly evidenced by the fact that the series just won an Emmy.

The second season had one goal: to bring it down. In promotional clips, Rinder tells Remini, We need to do more than just document this stuff. The first episodes focusing on child abuse and forced labor were hard-hitting and left many viewers wondering how such an organization could function in the United States, let alone while enjoying tax-exempt status as a religious organization.

More recent episodes strayed a bit, focusing on the suicides of members, which, while tragic, I contend are not legally actionable. Aaron Smith-Levin, one of the most powerful critics of Scientology (and a contributor to the A&E series) pushed back against my assertions, making a critical point that the organization does indeed have culpability in the suicides of its members if Scientology authorities prohibited them from seeking professional help. But could suicides spark a law enforcement investigation? Unlikely. Last nights episode, however, just might.

Interviews With Bodyguards to the Boss

Remini and Rinder spent the fifth episode documenting the rise of David Miscavige, the current leader of Scientology after the death of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. In the previous season, Remini and Rinder highlighted just how sociopathic and violent Miscavige allegedly is, but this episode highlighted the institutional methods Miscavige used to seize power over the billion-dollar organization. It interviewed two men close to Miscavige: his former body men and the former head of security at the Gold Base.

John JB Brousseau was not only one of Miscaviges body men, but also his former brother-in-law. Like many the pair interviewed in the last season, Brousseau says he became disillusioned upon witnessing Miscaviges violent treatment of other members of the church. Brousseaus testimony is powerful not only for those still in Scientology who view Miscavige as a kind of deity, but also to law enforcement because of the brutal nature of some of the assaults he described.

The most powerful portion of the episode, and most likely to be of interest to law enforcement, was the....

U.N. Security Council to meet after North Korea fires another missile over Japan "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

SEOUL/TOKYO (Reuters) North Korea fired a second missile over Japan far out into the Pacific Ocean on Friday, South Korean and Japanese officials said, deepening tension after Pyongyangs recent test of its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb.

The U.N. Security Council was to meet later in the day to discuss the launch at the request of the United States and Japan, diplomats said.

The missile flew over Hokkaido in the north and landed in the Pacific about 2,000 km (1,240 miles) to the east, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

The missile reached an altitude of about 770 km (480 miles) and flew for about 19 minutes over about 3,700 km (2,300 miles), according to South Koreas military far enough to reach the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, which the North has threatened before.

On Aug 29, North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile, the Hwasong-12, which traveled 2,700 km (1,700 miles) over Japan.

The range of this test was significant since North Korea demonstrated that it could reach Guam with this missile, the Union of Concerned Scientists said in a statement.

But it said the accuracy of the missile, still at an early stage of development, was low.

Warning announcements about the missile blared around 7 a.m. (2200 GMT Thursday) in parts of northern Japan, while many residents received alerts on their mobile phones or saw warnings on TV telling them to seek refuge.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said the launch put millions of Japanese into duck and cover, although residents of northern Japan appeared calm and went about their business as normal after the second such launch in less than a month.

The U.S. military said soon after the launch it had detected a single intermediate range ballistic missile but the missile did not pose a threat to North America or Guam, which lies 3,400 km (2,110 miles) from North Korea.

U.S. officials repeated Washingtons ironclad commitments to the defense of its allies. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called for new measures against North Korea and said the continued provocations only deepen North Koreas diplomatic and economic isolation.

Not Even Trans Apologists Can Keep Their Ideology Straight "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

What a different world wed have if more people did evaluated a belief system, not from what they assume about it, but what they learn from the experienced and serious people who hold those beliefs. Because of my work at Focus on the Family, Ive had the fortune to do this over the last decade or more with the gender studies community.

They are quite different than I am. Like 99.999 percent of the world, I hold that humanity presents itself as male and female, solely. Our gender studies friends believe this is a tragically uninformed, if not oppressive, view. What have I learned by venturing outside my own bubble and observing this different world? I have much to tell, and no one could make up this stuff.

Much of this experience comes from speaking at more liberal college campuses all around the country on different aspects of gender issues. Out of the gate, I tell audiences my belief on this subject is founded in the reality that humanity exists and is fundamentally understood as male and female, that both are wonderfully unique and they need each other.

Its typically normal for such crowds to boo, hiss, and laugh raucously at the statement. I long ago came to anticipate the reaction like a match to gasoline, its own little law of nature. Group fun at the silly hayseeds expense. I let the amusement simmer down then repeat back to the audience what just happened. I said this, and you guys did that. Wisconsin Public Radio hosted and recorded one such event at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and edited out this exchange in their broadcast. Simply noting the behavior without commentary is its own commentary.

Ive Never Met a Third Sex

I then go on into my remarks asking if the males in the hall will raise their hands. Many do. The females? They make themselves known as well. Are there others who dont fit into either category? On most campuses, I get a sprinkling of hands raised.

I say to these folks the same thing you might. Please come up afterward and introduce yourself. Ive never had the pleasure of meeting someone who isnt male or female. Who would pass up that opportunity, right? Each one whos responded to the invitation over the years has only left me disappointed. Falsehood in advertising. They are always some hope-crushing variation of male or female, and often times, not that varied.

A butch female is not a new gender, and no amount of butch can make her one. A femme or androgynous guy is simply a femme or androgynously fashioned male. Neither is a third, fourth or ninth gender, just a different kind of male or female.

Ive never had Fox and Owl in my audience, but they perfectly represent what I see time and again. Fox and Owl, a British man and woman, publicly contend they are not a man or wom...

Health Care Is So Expensive Because You Dont Pay For It Yourself "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Almost everyone involved in health care will tell you that the greatest problem in our system is that we pay on a fee-for-service basis. Almost everyone is wrong.

The logic is obvious: paying a fee for a service encourages providers to get more fees by providing more services. Ergo, we consume too much and spend too much. Ipso facto, getting rid of fee-for-service would result in fewer services and less spending. Case closed.

Well, maybe not. In fact, almost everything we do in the course of our economic lives, we do on a fee-for-service basis. When we go to the movies, get our oil changed, have our roof replaced, buy a computer, get a haircut, hire a babysitter, buy a steak dinner, get someone to do our taxes or defend us in a suit, we do it on a fee-for-service basis. None of it is particularly inflationary.

The graph below shows the Consumer Price Index broken into components. Food, housing transportation, apparelall are paid fee-for-service, and all have a lower rate of inflation than health care does.

Yes, the providers of these services would like to sell us more units of service. But we have good reason to resistwe dont want to waste our money on services we dont need. What is unique about health care is not fee-for-service, but third-party payment. Only in health care is someone else picking up the tab for our spending.

If We Applied Health-Cares Model to Other Markets

If we applied the same third-party payment technique to any other segment of the economy, we would get the exact same inflationary spiral we see in health care. I buy donuts from time to time. If those donuts were free at the point of purchase, I would buy (and eat) a whole lot more than I do today. The stereotype of cops eating donuts came about because donut shops gave them away to the cops for free.

Babies Start Learning Language In The Womb. What Does That Mean For Generational Poverty? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Did you know the most impactful thing you can do for babies and toddlers to get them ready for school is talk to them? Language is a predictor of school success, and researchers can begin to predict which children will do well in school as early as three years old.

Children who know more words at age three enter kindergarten at age five more prepared and are more likely to be reading on grade level by third grade, a key indicator that a student will graduate from high school. Pre-K interventions dont happen early enough, so to ensure children are ready to learn to read, parents need to start at the very beginning: pregnancy.

A recent study from researchers at the University of Kansas shows that the brain begins building the foundation of language as much as a month before birth. The study looked at fetal heart rate changes for the unborn babies of two dozen American mothers who were, on average, eight months pregnant.

Researchers played a recording from a bilingual speaker reading a passage in English and a passage in Japanese. The babies heart rates changed when hearing the second passage read in Japanese, a language with a distinctly different cadence than the mothers native English, but their heart rates did not change when the speaker read the second passage in English. This sensitivity to the rhythmic process of language had been seen in studies of days-old infants, but this new information indicates the beginning of language acquisition happens even before a baby is born.

Unborn Babies Are Already Learning

How much can an unborn baby hear? According to Utako Minai, associate professor of linguistics and the team lead for the study, babies can hear a good bit before birth. Fetuses can hear things, including speech, in the womb. Its muffled, like the adults talking in a Peanuts cartoon, but the rhythm of the language should be preserved and available for the fetus to hear.

Babies are born knowing their mothers voice, and according Minais team, they are familiar with the rhythm of her language as well. The human brain begins building its wiring right from the start, and in the first few years of life, brain development careens along at rapid pace, forming one million neural connections every second. The more the brain is used, the more neural pathways form.

After a break to prune and organize, the brain continues the cycles of building and pruning to build more efficient circuits and complex processes on top of the initial foundation. This early building phase is a key period for language development where a babys caretakers play a primary role in teaching them to communicate.

Why Congress Would Be Insane To Give SpaceX A Monopoly Over Space Launches "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Elon Musks SpaceX wants to go to Mars with taxpayer money. That may never happen, but this week Congress might give the company the greatest gig it could ever receive on planet Earth: a government-granted monopoly over space launch.

To be fair, every aerospace manufacturer receives a high percentage of its government contracts from the federal government. Thats expected. But what should not be tolerated is political maneuvering by any company to outlaw existing competition through congressional action.

Elon Musk Kills His Rivals Via Legislative Fiat

For years, that is exactly what Musk has been trying to do. Giving big ticket donations to politicians of both parties, particularly those in high-ranking positions in the Armed Services Committee, to kill rivals by legislative fiat. Unfortunately, this week, it just may pay off.

Section 1615 of the House NDAA, which the Senate may very well take up for a vote in a couple of days, would ban the Air Force from seeking development of new launch systems. This is Musk donor-speak for allowing SpaceX to dominate the market.

Many military operations heavily rely on space services to alert the Pentagon to potential threats, as well as provide means of strategic communications. Thats why ensuring adequate competition and steady innovation is so important. Currently, the two main players are SpaceX and United Launch Alliance (ULA). ULA has an unprecedented number of successful launches. However, its Delta IV is on its way out, while production of its hallmark Atlas V will also soon cease because Congress is not comfortable with its use of the Russian-made RD-180 engine.

For these reasons, the Pentagon has invested in public-private partnerships to produce new engines. However, it is also working with companies to establish a new launch vehicle. Why? Because as the Pentagon stated in a testimony to the House A...

The Day of the Generals: Winning Armageddon "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

8821 Journal NEO Collage

In a room, somewhere deep inside the Pentagon generals and admirals met recently in order to prepare an assessment for the United States Senate Armed Services Committee. Present at the metering were General Mark Milley, the U.S. Armys Chief of Staff, the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson, the Commandant of the Marine Corps General Robert Neller, and U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff General David L. Goldfein. At such a meeting theres no doubt that Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford attended seeing hes the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The agenda for this meeting was serious as a heart attack Americas most brilliant and powerful military men gathered that day to discuss Armageddon.

The minutes of this fateful meeting are top secret. Only a handful of people will ever know what was discussed. But the end result of the strategy session was revealed on September 15, 2017 before the people of the United States. The top generals of the most powerful nation on Earth advised congress that America could in fact win an all-out war with Russia and China. It must have been a scene right out of Director Stanley Kubricks classic Cold War film, Dr. Strangelove. I was not there, so I can only imagine the gathering of war hawks, the stoic expertise and military intellect, and the obtuse arrogance being conveyed across the congressional forum that day. The vision makes me wonder, Who in the hell ordered such an assessment in the first place? But I think we all know the answer.

General Milley expressed his only concern over World War III by citing the U.S. Armys lack of resources and training to execute Americas national security strategy without high military risk. Admiral Richardson agreed with Milley, but his level of confidence in the U.S. Navys dominance seemed somehow higher. Milley told committee:

I concur with Gen. Milley. If we get into one of those conflicts, well win, but it going to take a lot longer than wed like and its going to cost a lot more in terms of dollars and in casualties.

Marine General Neller parroted these opinions, only with a typical Jar Head obtuseness and psychosomatic bravado proclaiming America...

The Trump Administration Was Ordered to Disclose the Legal Basis for its Syria Strike. It Handed Over Squat. "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

By Alex Emmons, September 13, 2017, The Intercept.

In this image provided by the U.S. Navy, the guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) launches a tomahawk land attack missile in the Mediterranean Sea in April.

After President Donald Trump launched a cruise missile strike against Syria in April, his administration struggled to justify the legal basis for the attack. For months, a watchdog group has hounded the Trump administration for its legal reasoning. Under court order, the government has finally produced documents that reveal little, if anything.

One document the administration saw fit to release is simply an aggregation of praise for Trumps strike from pundits, lawmakers, and world leaders. It was prepared by Trumps National Security Council.

On April 6, the United States fired 59 tomahawk missiles at Syrias Shayrat air base in response to the regimes use of chemical weapons in Khan Shaykhun, Syria, two days earlier.

The day after the missile strike, an advocacy group called the Protect Democracy Project filed a request with multiple agencies for documents that outline the administrations legal basis for the attack. After the Pentagon and State Department denied the groups request for expedited processing, a judge ruled in July that there was a compelling need for the information to get out and ordered the administration to provide answers as soon as practicable.

In response, the administration on Friday released nearly 60 pages of responsive documents, none of which contain any legal reasoning beyond what appears in the White Houses public statements. The Protect Democracy Project has published the documents on its...

Abortion Is A Celebration Now. Thats Insanely Wrong "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Since Roe v. Wade, abortion has worn many faces: Weve seen abortion as a political movementa womans right to choose trumps a babys right to life. Weve seen the even more progressive left declare a war on womens wombsa la reproductive justice.

This week, the Ohio Supreme Court heard one of the most important abortion cases of its time. But the pro-choice movement has gone so far, abortion has surpassed being personally expedient or politically progressiveits now straight-up celebrated at events nationwide.

In June, actress Martha Plimpton (of The Goonies fame) spoke at a Shout your abortion event in Seattle. The footage was recently released, and her remarks are a bit surprisingif not disgustingeven for an event created just to brag about abortions.

I also had my first abortion here at the Seattle Planned Parenthood! she exclaims, followed by a long, loud, Yaaayyyyyyyy. The crowd and host erupted in raucous applause. Plimpton continues: Notice I said first. And I dont want you guys to feel insecure. It was my best one. Heads and tails above the rest. If I could Yelp review it I totally would. Plimpton goes on to thank the doctor who performed the abortion, as if she had received a gift from a total stranger.

Treating Abortion Like Stand-Up Comedy

Granted, this particular event likely garnered an unusually abortion-friendly or even abortion-fanatic audience. But Plimptons light, airy, celebratory toneas if she had bought a new home or published a best-selling novelseems extreme, even in context.

Whats even more alarming is the crowds reaction: it sounds as if they had gotten the keys to a new car from Oprah herself. Imagine a serial killer on a talk show announcing that hed murdered someone years ago, and hearing the crowd exclaim, Wahoooooo! Because thats basically what happened.

Yet acting like abortion should be celebrated or joked about isnt uncommon. In April, comedian Louis C.K. thought abortion would be a funny enough topic for a stand-up routine. Abortion is exactly like taking a s. Or it isnt.

To this, the crowd laughed. Or its killing a baby. Its only one of those two things. C.K. says with a smirk. He continues. I dont think its like killing a baby. Well, I think its a little like killing a baby. The crowd laughs again. Ok fine. Its 100 percent killing a baby.

Now of course, some could say the comedian is using satire to comment on an important, controversial issue in society. But...

Everybody (in Congress) feels it is (his elevation) delayed. Now, he (Rahul) is waiting for organisation elections. He would like to emerge as the president of AICC only out of the election process, he said. The internal election process in states is expected to be completed this month, which would be followed by the one at the AICC level, the former chief minister of Karnataka said.

Asked if he expected Rahul to take over next month, Moily said, Possibly yes. On what needs to be done to boost the prospects of the Congress, he said, Rahul Gandhi is doing it. We will have to address the issues in respect of each of the state, because each state is different from the rest. So, that requires state-wise strategies not...

Mainstream Media Defends Amazon Deleting Nearly All Negative Reviews of Hillary Clintons Book "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

As failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton began making the media rounds promoting her new book titled, What Happened, many Amazon users were asking the same questions after their 1-star reviews of the memoir were mysteriously deleted.

ClintonImage via ZeroHedge

As a report from ZeroHedge noted, Amazon did not just delete a few reviewsit deleted over 1,000 reviews. As of 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, there were 445 reviews remaining. Out of those, 97 percent were 5-star reviews, 438 contained positive comments, and only seven reviews were critical.

While the idea that Amazon would delete negative reviews of Clintons book might be treated as another crazy Clinton conspiracy if it were to receive any mainstream media coverage, the opposite is true in this case. Instead, the story did receive its share of media coveragewith the MSM defending the websites actions.

An Amazon spokesperson told Fortune that the reviews were deleted because they were about Hillary Clinton the politician, not specifically about the contents of the book itself.

In the case of a memoir, the subject of the book is the author and their views, the spokesperson said. Its not our role to decide what a customer would view as helpful or unhelpful in making their decision. We do however have mechanisms in place to ensure that the voices of many do not drown out the voices of a few and we remove customer reviews that violate our community guidelines.

In a story titled, The Anti-Hillary Clinton Camp Has Already Hijacked Amazon Reviews of Her New Book, Fortune put the blame on the Amazon users who dared to leave a critical review of Clintons latest publication.

Given the current political climate and the venomous nature of the 2016 race, it...

Something New: The OFF Act can Bury Fossil Fuels "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The OFF Act Is a Climate Game Changer

From an Article by Mark Schlosberg, Food & Water Watch, September 7, 2017

Rep.Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) introduced the Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act (OFF Act) last week. This visionary bill comes as the nation bears witness to the devastation being brought by the climate change-super charged storm Harvey to Texas and Louisiana and braces for Irmas impacts. Storms like this and other extreme weather events will become all the more frequent and intense unless bold action is taken.

Gabbards billthe strongest yet introduced in Congresswill put us on a path towards avoiding increased climate chaos: It will place a moratorium on new fossil fuel projects and move the country to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035, with a focus on a rapid transition in the next ten years. The bill is co-sponsored by Representatives Nanette Barragan (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL).

This legislation could not be more needed. While the impacts of Harvey are readily apparent to all, it is not an isolated occurrence. Evidence continues to build of the severity and urgency of the climate crisis. And while Trump flew to Texas and talked about helping communities there, he and fossil fuel-funded members of Congress continue to put the planet on a collision course with climate chaos. They deny climate change and are suppressing our governments ability to address it; they are moving to increase drilling and fracking on public lands and off our coasts; they are promoting development of more pipelines; and they are exporting more oil and gas abroad while wrecking the environment here at home.

In this dysfunctional political environment, a broad movement has grown to resist Trumps foolish and dangerous agenda. Hundreds of thousands of people have marched in the streets in DC and across the country. Thousands more have called members of Congress, written letters, and gone to town halls and community meetings opposing this destructive agenda. This is heartening and powerful, but we must do more.

To win on climateto really move off of fossil fuels and transition our economy to 100 percent renewable energy on a time frame that will actually prevent even greater climate catastrophewe must continue to resist Trumps agenda, but we need to do more than....

Overview Of Battle For Deir Ezzor On September 15, 2017 (Maps)

Click to see the full-size map

On September 15, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), the Syrian Republican Guard (SRG), Hezbollah and their allies continued operations against ISIS in the area of Deir Ezzor city.

Troops advanced on Ayash northwest of Deir Ezzor city amid an intense fighting with ISIS units. Some pro-government sources even claimed that the SAA and its allies already entered the village. However, this still has to be confirmed.

Government forces conduct their anti-ISIS operation on the western flank of Deir Ezzor city using their advdantage in free manpower in the area. ISIS units are de-facto encircled in the area between southern Raqqah and western Deir Ezzor that had beeen created as a result of the advance of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Deir Ezzor.

ISIS poses a notable resistance to the advancing government forces but they dont have enough resources to get a upper hand in this battle.

East of Deir Ezzor, government forces further advanced on al-Martiyah en route to al-Mayyadin city, a key ISIS stronghold located on the road to the Syrian-Iraqi border.

On September 14, the SAA, the SRG and their allies liberated Baghiliyah, the missiles base, the Hajjanah regiment, the radio transmitter station, the al-Jazeera university, the Saiqa Camp, the Nishan oil field, the Nishan gas station and the water pumping station east of Thurdah mount as well as the Dhamn base and the al-Kurum hill.

3D-Printed Wind Turbine Blades Could Bring Sci-Fi Level of Performance "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

( The rapid advance of 3D printing technology means that hybrid-material wind turbine blades complete with metal mesh inserts are no longer the stuff of imagination. These energy savers with sci-fi-level performance could become reality in as soon as two years. Philip Totaro of Totaro & Associates, The greatest challenge for wind turbine blade structural and manufacturing engineers is to implement the idealized performance and noise mitigated designs of aerodynamics engineers, explains Totaro. Limitations of previous generations of manufacturing technology and the reliance on lower cost materials have limited the type of spar/shear web structures which could be utilized. But 3D printing could be about to change all that, Totaro says.

Facebook Has Developed AI That Can React Naturally to Human Expression "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The Facebook AI lab has developed an animated bot that learned to respond naturally to human facial movements during conversation, so much so that volunteers rated its reactions as natural as a humans.

Most of us are able to intuitively understand human facial expressions: in conversation, millions of tiny muscle movements change our eyes, mouth, head position and more to signal to our fellow humans what were thinking. These unconscious movements are what make us human, but they also make it exceptionally difficult for robots to imitate us and make those that try seem creepy, as they enter the uncanny valley.

Samsungs New Electric Car Batteries Boost Range to 600 Kilometers "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

At the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA Cars 2017) in Germany earlier this week, Samsung SDI the battery-focused division of Samsung unveiled a new multi-functional battery pack capable of increasing the current range of electric vehicles. As explained by the Korean company, the battery enables cars to go between 600700 kilometers (3724343 miles), provided the right number of modules are installed.

Its users can change the number of modules as they want as if they place books on a shelf, says Samsung. For example, if 20 modules are installed in a premium car, it can go 600 to 700 kilometers. If 10 to 12 modules are mounted on a regular sedan, it can run up to 300 kilometers. This pack is expected to catch the eyes of automakers, because they can design a car whose mileage may vary depending on how many modules of a single pack are installed.

Electrek explains that automakers like Nissan and GM have been using prismatic cells in their battery packs. Samsung SDI began developing new 2170 cylindrical cells earlier this year, following the footsteps of Tesla, which was the first to do so with their 2170 battery cell.

London Grenfell Tower fire, inquiry false start "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

THE NIGHTMARE IS CONTINUING! Inquiry angers survivors

THE NIGHTMARE continues as it was like the first night, Shah Aghlani, who lost his mother and aunt in the Grenfell fire, said yesterday on the first day of the inquiry into the fire.

Survivors and the relatives of those who had died were further angered by the location of the inquiry, its narrowness and the fact that so few people have been re-housed. Out of the 196 made homeless by the fire to date, only three have been permanently re-housed.

The first day of the hearing was held at the Grand Connaught Rooms in central London, described by Labour MP for Kensington, Emma Dent Coad, as dripping with chandeliers.

She said that those affected by the Grenfell fire were angry because it was extremely difficult and costly to come all the way from the Grenfell Tower area of west London and attend. To make matters worse, the head of the inquiry former judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick did not take any questions after his opening statement.

China says opposes N. Korea missile launch, urges restraint "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

AFP | Pedestrians walk in front of a large video screen in Tokyo broadcasting a news report about North Koreas latest missile test that passed over Japan on September 15, 2017

BEIJING (AFP)  China condemned North Koreas launch of a ballistic missile over Japan Friday and appealed for restraint to avoid inflaming tensions in the region.

The Chinese side opposes the DPRKs violation of the resolution of the (UN) Security Council, and its use of ballistic missile technology for launch activities, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing.

The concerned parties should exercise restraint. They should not take any further action that could aggravate the situation on the peninsula and in the region, Hua said.

The launch, from near Pyongyang, came after the United Nations Security Council imposed an eighth set of measures on the isolated country following its sixth nuclear test earlier this month.

It was by far its largest nuclear test to date and Pyongyang said it was a hydrogen bomb small enough to fit onto a missile.

In New York, the Security Council called an emergency meeting for later Friday.

Racial Inequality Is Hollowing Out Americas Middle Class "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Dedrick Asante-Muhammad and Chuck Collins for Other Words - Since 1983, national median wealth has declined by 20 percent, falling from $73,000 to $64,000 in 2013. And U.S. homeownership has been in a steady decline since 2005. While we often hear about the struggles of the white working class, a driving force behind this trend is an accelerating decline in black and Latino household wealth. Over those three decades, the wealth of median black and Latino households decreased by 75 percent and 50 percent, respectively, while median white household wealth actually rose a little. As of 2013, median whites had $116,800 in wealth compared to just $2,000 for Latinos and $1,700 for blacks. This wealth decline is a threat to the viability of the American middle class and the nations overall economic health. Families with more wealth can cover emergencies without going into debt and take advantage of economic opportunity, such as buying a home, saving for college, or starting a business. We looked at the growing racial wealth gap in a new report for the Institute for Policy Studies and Prosperity Now. We found that if these appalling trends continue, median black household wealth will hit zero by 2053, even while median white wealth continues to climb. Latino net worth will hit zero two decades later, according to our projections.

Seeing through all the noise "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Ive mentioned this odd duck conference sponsored by Mythicist Milwaukee beforenow Martin Hughes clarifies what bugs him about it, too. The meeting has been doing some unusual things. Theyve been advertising some well-known attendees not speakers, just popular atheists who will be doing the hard work of showing up which is the first time Ive seen that.

On Saturday, September 30th, 2017, several atheist celebrities will be at the fourth annual Mythicist Milwaukee Mythinformation Conference. The more well-known names include Matt Dillahunty, Richard Carrier [Wait! I thought we destroyed his reputation and his career! At least, he claims we did that, and is suing us for one million dollars for it], Aron Ra [edit: Aron Ra has recently decided not to attend. His wife cited the reasons here), and Seth Andrews. Their presence at this conference is being well-publicized.

But the people coming to hear these people speak are going to be disappointed. Because none of them are giving a talk.

Which isweird. I mean, Matt Dillahunty, the one exception, will only serve as a moderator for a debate; hes not speaking.

Some of them, like Seth Andrews, have been awfully defensive (and offensive) about it, too. Im curious about a couple of things.

  • Are you being paid, or at least having your travel costs covered, to be an attendee and to promote the meeting?

  • Are you comfortable being window-dressing?

No condemnation if they were to answer yes to either of those questions its just that it would make me a little uncomfortable, and I wouldnt accept an invitation to a conference on those terms.

But then the next question is, when youve got Dillahunty and Andrews and briefly, Aron Ra, why are they being sidelined? Who are the even more brilliant speakers being showcased at this meeting?

Why, in a conference attended by so many shining stars of the atheist movement, arent any of the celebrities speaking?

Its a simple mystery. Heres the clue: All the speakers at this skeptic conference are anti-SJWs who, for the most part, havent had a prominent voice on the atheist conference scene before.

A bit of background: See, the three YouTubers speaking were not given opportunities to speak at VidCon 2017, the major YouTube conference. In spite of the fact th...

Passengers badly burned in London Underground train incident "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

AFP / by Alexandra DEL PERAL | London has witnessed several terror attacks so far this year and the capital is on high alert

LONDON (AFP)  Passengers were seen badly burned following a possible explosion on a London Underground train, eyewitnesses said on Friday, as emergency services said they were responding to an incident.Witnesses reported seeing passengers who had suffered facial burns and had hair coming off, with at least two women seen being treated by medics amid scenes of panic during rush hour.

Explosion on Parsons Green District Line train. Fireball flew down carriage and we just jumped out open door, said Twitter user @Rrigs, who posted pictures of a white bucket smouldering on the train.

The bucket looked like the type used by builders and there appeared to be cables coming out of it.

We are aware of an incident at Parsons Green tube station. Officers are in attendance, Londons Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

The station was closed, as well as an entire section of the District Line where it is located and police urged people to stay away from the area.

A reporter at the scene was quoted by the paper as saying that some passengers were really badly burned and their hair was coming off.

The incident comes after a series of terror attacks that have rocked Britain this year, killing dozens of people and injuring hundreds, putting the capital on high alert.

British Foreign Secretary and former London mayor Boris Johnson appealed for calm.

Im afraid my information is limited and it really is important not to speculate at the moment, he told Sky News.

Obviously, everybody should keep calm and go about their lives in a normal way, as normal as they possibly can, he said.

A Better Way to Thrift "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I used to love thrifting for everything from clothes to furniture to books, but lately it just doesn't seem worth it to drive from store to store and treasure hunt through all the junk. Actually, it's not just thrifting...I would do ALL my shopping online these days if possible. It's just so much nicer to get a box at the door than to take Ian in and out of the car seat all day long! offered to give me some store credit to try them out, and since I've already been discouraged with in-person thrifting, I said yes please. They are the largest online consignment shop and offer more than 2 million top quality secondhand items to choose from (brands like Gap, J.Crew, and more). It's mostly clothes, but they also have some toys, books and decor. The site really is like a GIANT online thrift store...there's a lot of stuff to sift through, and most of it I wouldn't buy. But there are also some gems! So you can still get the rush of a great find, without having to physically drive to a store and flip through a bunch of racks. And it's way easier to get to the good stuff because you're to able filter by so many more things: brand, size, gender, season, price, color, condition, etc. I was able to snag a bunch of cute fall stuff for Ian, most of it with tags still a few things for myself. :)

A better way to thrift: review

These are just a few of my favorite finds. Aren't those tiny Toms so cute? And the mustard yellow vest? Ahhh, I can't wait for colder weather to put him in that!

Like any thrift store, the majority of the items aren't that great, and it definitely takes some patience to dig through them all. And the presentation isn't as slick as if you were shopping for new clothes (the photos are obviously not as pretty as professional product shots)...BUT just like thrifting, if you're willing to do a little work you can find some amazing deals! And hey, at least you can do your treasure hunting from the comfort of your own sofa. Plus, to make the deals even sweeter, is offering 25% off your first purchase, with the code 25OHBABY (expires December 31st). Let me know if you give them a try, and if you find anything good!

Happy shopping, and have a great weekend. :)

A court in San Francisco has cleared San Andreas of any wrong doing saying the town should not be held responsible for the tectonic boundary that divides the Pacific and North American plates. For over 100 years geologists and seismologists have highlighted San Andreas as the epicentre of volatile rock formations that run from the Santa Cruz Mountains in the north, down to Monterey County in the south.

However, the court decided that it was wrong to blame San Andreas for geological defects in the area saying that any continental transform condition was a result of right-lateral strike-slip and should not be attributed to the town or its people.
In his summing up, the judge pointed out that any earthquake activity caused by slippage in the tectonic plates would affect San Andreas just as much as any other town in the region. Its time to stop blaming San Andreas for things that are quite clearly beyond their control said the judge. The rock formations are a geological freak of nature, created millions of years ago, long before San Andreas was even there. Surely its time to end this blame game.
San Andreas welcomed the findings saying the decision would bring some closure for the town.  Representatives of the Pacific and North American plates have released a joint statement saying they were now looking forward to moving on, at a rate of 37 millimetres per year.

Piezomagnetic Trick Shrinks 2.5 GHz Antennas "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

To a ham radio operator used to short-wave antennas with lengths listed in tens of meters, the tiny antennas used in the gigahertz bands barely even register. But if your goal is making radio electronics thats small enough to swallow, an antenna of a few centimeters is too big. Physics determines plausible antenna sizes, and theres no way around that, but a large group of researchers and engineers have found a way of side-stepping the problem: resonating a nano-antenna acoustically instead of electromagnetically.

Normal antennas are tuned to some extent to the frequency that you want to pick up. Since the wavelength of a 2.5 GHz electromagnetic wave in free space is 120 cm, most practical antennas need a wire in the 12-60 cm range to bounce signals back and forth. The trick in the paper is to use a special piezomagnetic material as the antenna. Incoming radio waves get quickly turned into acoustic waves physical movement in the nano-crystals. Since these sound waves travel a lot slower than the speed of light, they resonate off the walls of the crystal over a much shorter distance. A piezoelectric film layer turns these vibrations back into electrical signals.

Ceramic chip antennas use a similar trick. There, electromagnetic waves are slowed down inside the high-permittivity ceramic. But chip antennas are just slowing down EM waves, whereas the research demonstrated here is converting the EM to sound waves, which travel many orders of magnitude slower. Nice trick.

Granted, significant material science derring-do makes this possible, and youre not going to be fabricating your own nanoscale piezomagnetic antennas any time soon, but with everything but the antenna getting nano-ified, its exciting to think of a future where the antennas can be baked directly into the IC.

All the World's a Stage "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

I feel like my blogging has gotten painfully repetitive, and I apologize for that. My compulsion to keep hitting many of the same themes like a dead horse is driven by the persistence and strength of narratives that I feel are dangerously wrong. Sometimes its easier to see something after the fact, and if you go back to what I wrote just prior to President Trump making a deal with Schumer and Pelosi, youll see that I was saying that the time had come for the right to be sidelined.

In that piece, I used the Heritage Foundations September action plan as a stand-in for the right, so I was focused on a broad array of policies. It wasnt just the debt ceiling and a possible government shutdown, but also what to do with the FAA and CHIP and national flood insurance policy. The overall conclusion, though, was that the right was still making impossible demands on Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. By extension, they were making impossible demands on Donald Trump, too. And it was getting late enough in the game that it just wasnt going to be possible to humor the right anymore. It was time for the entire Republican leadership to pivot and start working with the Democrats.

When it actually happened, the next day, it was of course disguised and filled with sideshow narratives about Trump selling Ryan and McConnell out, but the truth was that Ryan and McConnell were every bit at the end of their ropes as the president was, and they all needed to pivot. To be honest, I had been thinking about that moment for almost a year. Back in October of 2016, when I still thought the Access Hollywood tape had destroyed any chance Trump had, I was already thinking about September 2017 and what it would do to the Republican Speaker when he or she had to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a shutdown for President Clinton.

My assumption at that point was that Ryan would not seek to be reelected Speaker if Trump lost and would not succeed if he tried.

Again, were assuming here that Clinton wins the presidency and the Republicans retain a narrower majority in the House.

The Republicans will search around for someone who is willing to take the job of passing spending bills that President Clinton wont veto. But the standard theyll set for their candidate is that they wont pass spending bills that President Clinton will sign. Only a fool would volunteer for such an assignment, and only someone dishonest could fulfill both roles at once.

The House Republican caucus will struggle to find a candidate and they will struggle even mor...

Trump's Retreat From a Blind Alley "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Its admittedly hard to read a man like Donald Trump. He isnt consistent. His word is not good. His comprehension of some of the basics of our system of government is shockingly low. His understanding of history, both recent and distant, is horribly flawed. His grasp of what is easy and difficult doesnt appear to exist. He beat all his political opponents without seeming to have a realistic and overarching strategy, but more through a series of tactical battles that involved as many big losses as big wins. He lives in the moment and doesnt follow even a basic script. Hes driven by lower emotions and is blinded to larger concerns.

So, it wasnt really possible to confidently predict that he would not want to deport the Dreamers. His reaction to Charlottesville and his pardon of Joe Arpaio could have legitimately led people to conclude that his racial animosity would outweigh his compassion and that his strategic vision was focused on shoring up the support of his racist base.

I perhaps am willing to give him too much credit for strategic thinking, although Im wary of underestimating him after having done so for too long. But, I saw some of his racial misbehavior in August as a potential prophylactic against the backlash he knew was coming in September when he knew he would have to back down on DACA and the border wall and strike a deal with the Democrats on fiscal and budgetary issues.

After all, the backlash was very predictable:

Casual Observation "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Jonathan Chait is basically correct, but I don't think it's accurate to say that Bernie Sanders has gotten us zero percent closer to a single-payer system for health care. Convincing almost all Democrats who have presidential ambitions to sign on for his bill is a form of progress, even if we can legitimately debate whether it alone moves the needle more or less than a rounding error from zero.

The reason I'm a little more optimistic than that is because Sanders doesn't have to be the details guy who explains how the public is weaned off employer-based health care or convinced to pay the taxes needed to put everyone on Medicare. If he can just get the party to make that a consensus goal, he's surely done better than zero percent.

A Socratic Dialogue on Health Care "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee, Republicans are now confronting healthcare. Its going something like this:

SENATOR LAMAR ALEXANDER of TENNESSEE: UmPatty? I didnt want to tell you this, but we broke the television.
SENATOR PATTY MURRAY of WASHINGTON: What the unholy hell?!?? Are you kidding me??!?
LAMAR: Yeah, um, no. No, Im not.
PATTY: Whats wrong with it?
LAMAR: Well, its smashed.
PATTY: Smashed?!?? Why the hell is it smashed?
LAMAR: See, remember when you told us to be sure to pay the cable bill?
PATTY: Yeah.
LAMAR: We didnt do it.
PATTY: Figures. So?
LAMAR: We couldnt watch the ball game.
PATTY: Right.
LAMAR: So, Mitch and Paul and everyone threw bricks at it.
PATTY: You idiots!!
LAMAR: Well, we want to fix it.
PATTY: Yeah, you better.
LAMAR: But we need your help.
PATTY: MY help? Why do you need MY help?
LAMAR: See, we also figured we owed you an apology.
PATTY: Damn straight yall owe me an apology!
LAMAR: But I cant get the guys to help pay for a new set unless I promise they wont have to admit they did anything wrong.
PATTY: Youre kidding, right?
LAMAR: So, what I need is for you to tell them they didnt do anything wrong.
PATTY: Why would I make a foolish concession like that?
LAMAR: Because otherwise, the television is going to stay smashed.

This is whats happening in the committee:

In exchange for funding Obamacares subsidies to insurers that cover care of low-income people with severe health needs, Republicans are demanding that some of the ACAs protections and mandates be waivedand have suggested rolling back the requirement that every insurance plan cover essential health benefits like maternity care and mental health treatment.

Now that the Republicans realize theyre stuck with the Affordable Care Act, they realize they cant just leave it broken. But Republicans also feel like they have to get some kind of concession from the Democrats or they wont agree to fix it.

Without a concession or a win they can point to,...

Why a Tax Bill Will Be So Hard "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

I wrote a piece yesterday entitled Tax Reform and the Politics of Tennessee that highlighted the roles of Sen. Bob Corker and Rep. Diane Black in the next big battle in Washington DC. It was the latest in a series of posts Ive written about the mechanics of passing a big tax bill through Congress using the budget reconciliation process to avoid a Democratic filibuster in the Senate. Not long after we published that article, more news broke about the difficulties the House of Representatives is having passing a budget, which is something they absolutely must do if they want to use the reconciliation process.

In my piece, I highlighted the fact that Rep. Diane Black is both the chairwoman of the House Budget Committee and intent on becoming a candidate for the governorship of Tennessee. I noted that a 2014 rule adopted by the House Republicans states that Black must relinquish her gavel if she officially declares to run for another office. What I didnt know at the time was that she had long planned to step down as the head of the Budget Committee by the end of this month anticipating that her work on the budget would be completed by then. In other words, her stalled budget is about to start interfering with her upcoming campaign sooner than I anticipated. And its making her uneasy:

The House GOPs budget chief Tuesday urged House Speaker Paul Ryan to bring the budget to the floor this month, even though her hard-fought fiscal outline lacks the 218 votes needed for passage.

House Budget Chairman Diane Black, frustrated by her partys divisions, is daring die-hard conservatives to vote no, forcing them to take the fall for choking off the partys chances at tax reform.

Sometimes when you get this close, perhaps you just need to put it on the floor, Black (R-Tenn.) told POLITICO in a 30 minute interview. I have made the case to the leadership, that I think its time.

I am restless. I want to have it done, she said.

She managed to get a budget blueprint passed out of her committee, but the leadership did a whip count last week and discovered that they dont have the votes to pass it on the floor of the House. The problem is a little hard to describe because its partly technical, partly a function of the House Freedom Caucus not fully understanding some of the technical details, and partly a result of Black trying to bullshit and bully the Freedom Caucus. And then thats all backed up by the potential for the leadership to use a fall-back position that would amount to breaking a promise they made to the Freedom Caucus back in January.

How to protect a drug patent? Give it to a Native American Tribe "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The drugmaker Allergan announced Friday that it had transferred its patents on a best-selling eye drug to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in upstate New York - an unusual gambit to protect the drug from a patent dispute. Under the deal, which involves the dry-eye drug Restasis, Allergan will pay the tribe $13.75 million. In exchange, the tribe will claim sovereign immunity as grounds to dismiss a patent challenge through a unit of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The tribe will lease the patents back to Allergan, and will receive $15 million in annual royalties as long as the patents remain valid.

Elite Epidemic: At Least 10 US Mayors Accused of Child Sex Crimes in Just the Last Year "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

As TFTP reported yesterday, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has resigned after a fifth victim has come forward and alleged the mayor raped him as a childit was his cousin. While this is certainly a massive revelation, it is important to note that Ed Murray is only one name on a long list of mayors accused of child sex-related crimes since 2016.

According to a scathing report from the Daily Caller, at least 10 current and former mayors have been accused of unspeakable crimes against children. Ranging from child porn to rape, some of the victims were as young as four-years-old.

The mayor of Stillwater, New York, Rick Nelson resigned earlier this month after he was caught and arrested with child porn. According to the Times Union, Nelsons arrest marked at least the fifth time in the last 42 years that the former school bus driver has been accused of victimizing children or teenagers.

Nelson, 62, faced three separate sex crime cases between 1975 and 1986 with one of the latter cases including allegations of rape and sodomy, according to the Times. And in 1982, the future mayor was accused of inappropriate behavior toward a 5-year-old. He was never found guilty on any of those charges.

Dale Kenyon, former mayor of Clayton, New York was also on the list. The 78-year-old mayor was indicted last week following allegations of sexual acts against a child. According to Watertown Daily Times, hes been indicted on a whopping 22 counts of third-degree criminal sexual acts.

In July, the mayor of Randolph, Nebraska, 61-year old Dwayne Schutt, was arrested following an investigation that yiel...

How To Read Donald Trump "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Ariel Dorfman for Tikkum - The organizers of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville last month knew just what they were doing when they decided to carry torches on their nocturnal march to protest the dethroning of a statue of Robert E. Lee. That brandishing of fire in the night was meant to evoke memories of terror, of past parades of hate and aggression by the Ku Klux Klan in the United States and Adolf Hitlers Freikorps in Germany. The organizers wanted to issue a warning to those watching: that past violence, perpetrated in defense of the blood and soil of the white race, would once again be harnessed and deployed in Donald Trumps America. Indeed, the very next day, that fatal August 12th, those nationalist fanatics unleashed an orgy of brutality that led to the deaths of three people and the injuring of many more. Millions around America and the world were horrified and revolted by that parade of torches. In my case, however, they also brought to mind deeply personal memories of other fires that had burned darkly so many decades before, far from the United States or Nazi Europe. As I watched footage of that rally, I couldnt help remembering the bonfires that lit up my own country, Chile, in the aftermath of General Augusto Pinochets September 11th coup in 1973 that first 9/11, which, with the active support of Washington and the CIA, had overthrown the popularly elected government of Salvador Allende.

This Brooklyn-Based Startup Is Growing Leather In LabsCruelty Free "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Modern Meadow believes leather is a co-product of the meat industry. You cant get cattle hide without stripping it from meat. Rather than configuring new ways to utilize polymers, the Brooklyn-based company genetically creates proteins similar to bovine collagen. As Inventionr reports :

Modern Meadow has formulated a method of activating the building blocks of proteins to form fibres without using natural fibroblasts. Once the fibres form, they can as well be assembled, according to its intended purposes, into fine sheets of leather. Once the process reaches this point, other processes like tanning and dyeing can proceed in the normal way.

Environmental impact is only aspect of this story. Natural leather is notoriously finicky. Now it can be produced in straight sheets, making production easier for whoever is going to work the leather. Engineers can even alter the composition within each sheet, making one part coarse and another soft, for example.
