Tripoli was dangerous not as dangerous as Benghazi but still dangerous. Random, lethal violence was to be expected. There were no police officers, no official law enforcement of any kind only tribal militia, who ruled the roost. He told me to be careful of ambushes while being driven around the city. What should I do if I get ambushed? I asked. Well, standard operating procedure in the army is to shoot your way out. Dont be static. Push on, fight back. I pointed out to him that I was an unarmed middle-aged lawyer who would be sitting in the back of a rickety saloon car when the moment came. He shrugged.
Not many people change the world. Fewer still are thanked for it. Adolf Hitler changed the world on 22 June 1941: by invading the Soviet Union, he delivered Hitlers Europe, the divided continent we lived in until 1989. We were not grateful for that. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev changed the world, as so many adoring millions saw it at the time, by ending the threat of their extermination by nuclear war and by allowing Europes captive nations to liberate themselves. But then, a Samson already blinded by his enemies, he brought down the gigantic temple of the Soviet Union on his own head, and his own power perished with it.
Harman was first elected to the shadow cabinet in 1992 and her account of her difficulties in her first job, as shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Gordon Browns deputy, are typical of the descriptions she gives of her ministerial career as a whole. She stresses her own inadequacy and failure in a way its almost impossible to imagine a mans political memoir doing.
One political leader who apparently tried to act on the idea of establishing a new nation in the heart of North America was Aaron Burr. Apparently, because the exact scope and intentions of what came to be known as the Burr Conspiracy of 1805-7 remain murky at best. Until recently, Burr was really known for one thing: killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804.

Adelaide families now have the opportunity buy fresh food directly from producers from all over SA at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market. The 20,000 strong crowd that turned up for the farmers market which formed the centrepiece of the 'Go Organic Festival' in September in 2005 encouraged the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RAHS) to back the foundation of a permanent farmers market by a not-for-profit community organisation. The market opened on October 1st 2006 with a massive crowd of 10,000 shoppers and runs each Sunday (apart from the weeks of the Royal Show) from 9am-1pm.
In the tradition of farmers markets, it is a food market at which both food producers and consumers can get a fair price for food produced in SA and support regional and sustainable land use. The market guarantees that you buy direct from the producer and is known for its strict adherence to the ethics of farmers markets which now number in their thousands worldwide as families seek to avoid overstored food from major retailers who pass on meagre prices to farmers. In Australia, the farmers market movement is represented by the Australian Farmers Market Association and SA's peak body, the SA Farmers Market Association, will soon be launched.
The Adelaide Showground location is superb, with a major bike trail, the Glenelg tram line, a major rail line, numerous bus routes all converging to make it one of the most accessible sites in Adelaide. Parking is also easy and cheap.
120 producers offer their extraordinarily diverse products (everything from oysters to almonds and bread to boysenberries!). It is accessed from the car parks at the Leader Street (southern) end of the Showgrounds.
Becoming a member brings with it 10% discount on all purchases as well as a right to vote in the management of the market. Details and memberships are available at www.adelaidefarmersmarket.com.au.
The Food Forest is a foundation stallholder at the market and presents a wide range of foods, always including its signature specialty - organically certified pistachio nuts. We are there on alternate weeks (we run short courses on the other weekends).
Gartner forecasts worldwide enterprise security spending to total $96.3 billion in 2018, an increase of 8 percent from 2017. Organizations are spending more on security as a result of regulations, shifting buyer mindset, awareness of emerging threats and the evolution to a digital business strategy. New questions are being asked about President Donald Trumps ability to lead after he slurred his words during a speech about his Jerusalem decision. Possible reasons for this include: fatigue, a dry mouth (the White House explanation), the use of drugs or alcohol, a problem with his dentures or more troubling issues dealing with his mental or physical health. Morning Joe reported this morning that, unlike other presidents, Trump has opted not to get his physicals at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Questions about Trumps mental stability have been growing over the last few months. While he has never been viewed as a stable person in the traditional sense, his tweets and comments have gotten more erratic. He was widely criticized recently when he retweeted several anti-Muslim videos that were posted by radicals in the United Kingdom.
One psychiatrist talk to MSNBCs Lawrence ODonnel about his impressions of Trumps state of mind.
Many think that any degradation in Trumps mental state may be due to the increased pressure he is feeling from Robert Muellers investigations into collusion between his campaign and the Russian government. This has increased since former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

Green introduced just two articles of impeachment against the President, but they were not impeachable offenses. [Trump has] undermined the integrity of his office, and has sewn discord among the people of the United States. Green said that whether or not Trump has committed any crimes is irrelevant: "The question isn't whether we have a bigot as President, the question is: What are we going to do about it?" Minority leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer voted nay with the Republicans and 4 other Democrats voted present. Democrat Whip Steny Hoyer struck a more moderate tone: "Do we disagree with [Trump's] policies? We do. But disagreeing with the policies is not enough to overturn an election a free and fair election of the American people." A growing number of Democrat voters want to make impeachment a central part of their 2008 midterm strategy. Democrat megadonor Tom Steyer has sunk at least $10 million into an online petition effort calling for Trumps impeachment. That has netted him more than 3.3 million signatures. H.R. McMaster worked with the NSA to perform surveillance on Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Steve Bannon and others. The original story is derived from a story first published on Monday by The Intercept. The source of the allegations against Gen. McMaster is a retired CIA officer reportedly working with Blackwater founder Erik Prince probably the most respected private security firm. The retired CIA agents name is John R. Maguire. Reportedly, he and Prince have been pitching the White House to hire them as a global, private spy network for the President because the current CIA Director, Mike Pompeo cannot rely on the intelligence that Obama holdovers within CIA are giving him for the Presidents Daily Brief. According to the Intercept: Maguire told at least two people that National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, in coordination with a top official at the National Security Agency, authorized surveillance of Steven Bannon and Trump family members, including Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. [Maguire] also had evidence McMaster used a burner phone to send information gathered through the surveillance to a facility in Cyprus owned by George Soros. ANDREI AKULOV | 07.12.2017 | WORLD / MIDDLE EAST Saudi Arabia and the UAE Forge New Military Alliance Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have formed a new military and trade partnership separate from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Germanys Social Democrats face a dilemma. Should they form another grand coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkels conservatives? Many in the party are skeptical. A conference in Berlin is supposed to provide answers.
The center-left Social Democrats (SPD) had been eagerly settling into their new role as Germanys largest opposition party. They had suffered a bitter defeat at the polls in Septembers national elections, and party leaders wanted to regroup outside of government. But the failure of exploratory coalition talks between Chancellor Angela Merkels conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), their Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU), the business-friendly Free Democrats (FDP) and the Greens have thrust the SPD back into the spotlight.
Will they once again join Merkel as junior partners in a so-called grand coalition? It is the question SPD members are set to address Thursday at their party conference in Berlin. If they did, they would have a stable parliamentary majority, but many fear that it could also be the beginning of the end of the party.
The SPD has already swallowed that bitter pill twice: They governed with the CDU/CSU from 2005 until 2009 and subsequently lost a huge number of votes during the next national election. Nevertheless, the Social Democrats tried their luck again in 2013, and voters were unforgiving: In this Septembers national elections, the SPD won 20.5 percent of the vote, the worst electoral showing in the partys 154-year history. It was a shock for the once-proud peoples party, which will now be meeting for the first time since the election.
Democratic leaders call effort premature, citing ongoing probes The House tossed aside an attempt by Rep. Al Green on Wednesday to bring articles of impeachment against President Trump. Many Democrats joined the Republican majority in voting, 364-58, to table the resolution from Mr. Green, Texas Democrat, after Democratic leaders said Mr. Trump's actions may be upsetting to the party, but that talk of impeachment was premature. "Legitimate questions have been raised about his fitness to lead this nation. Right now, Congressional committees continue to be deeply engaged in investigations into the President's actions both before and after his inauguration," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said in a joint statement. "The special counsel's investigation is moving forward as well, and those inquiries should be allowed to continue. Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment."

The capital of Israel is Jerusalem. Ask American politicians of either party and they will tell you that. Check the platform documents of the two major political parties and you will read that. Check with Congress and you will find a bipartisan resolution that passed declaring Jerusalem the eternal capital of Israel.
So it is fitting that President Trump would announce plans Wednesday to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and publicly refer to Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. After all, the political parties believe that, every major presidential candidate in the past few decades has said that, and Congress has declared it in bipartisan form.
Unfortunately, President Trump is committing the most grievance sin any politician in Washington can commit. He is walking the walk instead of just talking the talk. This is the behavior that is responsible for his election.
For decades, it has been perfectly convenient for politicians of both parties to fundraise in Jewish and Christian evangelical communities, declaring their support for Jerusalem as Israels capital.
This may be the first time in American history that a president is being attacked for keeping a promise made by the politicians who are attacking him.
It has been a great fundraising ploy to pledge support for moving the American embassy to Jerusalem. But few of the politicians have ever meant it. They could boldly claim to American audiences what they wanted to hear while privately winking at Palestinians and others who were in on the joke.
President Trump, though, is not joking. So now some of the very same American politicians who have for years supported Jerusalem as Israels capital when addressing American audiences are now savaging the president for doing what theyve long claimed they wanted.
This is all an exercise in mendacity that President Trump has no time for. He pledged to do something and he is going to do it.
This may be the first time in American history that a president is being attacked for keeping a promise made by the politicians who are attacking him.
Sadly, time and time again we see this even within the Republican Party. From calls....
In a harrowing report released Wednesday, an alleged victim of sexual harassment at the hands of Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) said that he told her something chilling after she rebuffed his advances. What did he say to her? The Washington Post reported the claims of a former staffer of Conyers who said that the "iconic" congressman propositioned her when she was just a 20-year-old intern working at his office. Courtney Morse, now 36, said that the congressman drove her home one evening but indicated that he wanted a sexual relationship with her after wrapping his hands around hers in her lap.
On November 30, the Central Statistical Office (CSO) came out with quarterly estimates of GDP for the second quarter (June to September) of 2017. The moderate jump in growth, compared to the previous quarter, sent analysts and spokespersons of the government into a tizzy, celebrating what they claimed was a sign of revival of the economy. Next morning, the story of the revival of the economy was front page news. If there was any adverse impact of demonetisation and GST, it was claimed, here was the evidence that such an impact was only short-term and had started to wane.
But are the Q2 figures a sign that the economy is really on a course of revival? What are these numbers and how seriously should one take them?
The data released by the CSO showed that year-on-year growth in the second quarter, 6.3%, was marginally higher than the year-on-year growth in previous two quarters (5.7% for Q1 and 6.1% for Q4). The increase from 6.1% and 5.7% to 6.3% was rather marginal and, for that reason alone, celebrations in the media seemed rather premature. A more careful examination of t...

New Delhi: The water of Arunachal Pradeshs river Siang has turned muddy in the last two months at the point where it enters India from Tibet. The change in the colour of the water, which was first noticed near Geling in the northeastern states Upper Siang district, has triggered many local residents and conscious citizens to suspect a Chinese hand in it.
Siang flows about 1,600 kilometres as Tsangpo river through the Tibet plateau before entering India in Arunachal Pradesh. The river becomes Brahmaputra after it flows into Assam near Sadiya. As per media reports from Guwahati, the waters of Brahmaputra in some places are also beginning to turn muddy, firming up the suspicion that China may have begun construction upstream.

Extinct kangaroo-like lion discovered in Australia
Fossil of dog-sized 19 million year-old marsupial reveals new insights into family tree of these ancient creatures
Josh Gabbatiss, Science Correspondent
Thursday 7 December 2017 01:14 GMT
The fossilised remains of a new species of marsupial lion have been found in Australia.
Though that species survived until around 30,000 years ago, it is thought that the arrival of humans in Australia may be linked to its demise.
This new lion is considerably more ancient. The scientists who discovered it estimate that it has been extinct for at least 19 million years.
It is also considerably smaller. While at 130 kg the larger marsupial lions could have been a real threat to our ancestors, this new species is around the size of a dog, weighing around 23 kg.
It's an anxiety and depression symptom that doctors frequently don't recognise. Feeling physically sick is a little-known sign of anxiety and depression, research finds. Many people - patients and doctors included - assume the cause of nausea is a physical problem, not a mental issue. However, people who go to the hospital with nausea are quite frequently found to be suffering from anxiety and/or depression. This study found that 41% of people complaining of nausea actually had an anxiety disorder and 24% were clinically depressed. Dr Tone Tangen Haug, the study's first author, says that identifying depression and anxiety faster is key: "This may lead to avoidance of long-term use of potentially harmful medications for nausea, unnecessary medical investigation and probably a better quality of life for the patients." The conclusions come from a survey of 62,000 people in Norway.

Either Theresa Mays government falls, or Britain crashes out of the EU with no trade deal. Mays squalid deal with Northern Irish hardliners allows no alternative.
My colleague Adam Ramsay has written persuasively about how far from the myth of an insurgent victory over the elites Brexit was led by Establishment England. It was connived, he says, by the powers that have run the country for centuries, combining an anguished cry of imperial nostalgia, and a home-coming for disaster capitalism.
Yet those same English elites could not, in their wildest dreams, have imagined the true outcome of their campaign to Make Britain Great Again.
The only thing that is certain now, amid so many other swirling uncertainties, is that Brexit has for the first time in hundreds of years made Ireland, once a colonised subordinate, far more powerful than its British neighbour.
After decades of strife, the border which separates Ireland and the UK is now barely noticeable discreet signposts, no checkpoints, people and goods flowing back and forth unimpeded. The government of the Republic of Ireland, as an EU member, has made it clear they will block any British proposal for the impending EU divorce which changes this arrangement, and imposes any kind of hard border. It would be catastrophic for the economy on both sides, and risks stoking sectarian tensions in a region which has only in recent history found peace after decades of violence, and where urban communities are still separated by large so-called peace walls.
Given all this, any pragmatist faced with Brexit would offer a special status for the Northern Ireland, allowing it to stay in some form of customs union or looser arrangement with the EU, enabling movement and trade over the border to continue largely unimpeded. (Northern Ireland, after all, voted to Remain in the EU by a majority of 56-44). Mays government was set this week to announce just such a measure, after striking an...

Internet users are having a field day at the Ukrainian army's expense after the latter released video footage of drills meant to show off its prowess before a delegation of visiting US National Guardsmen. The armed forces' new video shows troops from the California National Guard arriving at a training center in northern Ukraine to watch their Ukrainian counterparts take part in drills and discuss the prospects for further military cooperation. The video features the Ukrainian military showing off its mostly Soviet-era tanks, artillery and infantry weaponry being used to effect in an effort to wow their American colleagues. But what really seemed to 'wow' internet users in the video-gone-viral is a new coffin-shaped vehicle filled with anti-aircraft gunners pictured driving back and forth along a railway track. Some quickly christened the cart a 'wagon on a string'; others said it reminded them of a cart from a rollercoaster ride. The more macabre among users simply called the vehicle a 'coffin on wheels', given its distinct shape.

Generators have been an important part of Python ever since they were introduced with PEP 255.
Generator functions allow you to declare a function that behaves like an iterator.
They allow programmers to make an iterator in a fast, easy, and clean way.
Whats an iterator, you may ask?
An iterator is an object that can be iterated (looped) upon. It is used to abstract a container of data to make it behave like an iterable object. You probably already use a few iterable objects every day: strings, lists, and dictionaries to name a few.
An iterator is defined by a class that implements the Iterator Protocol. This protocol looks for two methods within the class: __iter__ and __next__.
Whoa, step back. Why would you even want to make iterators?
Iterators dont compute the value of each item when instantiated. They only compute it when you ask for it. This is known as lazy evaluation.
Lazy evaluation is useful when you have a very large data set to compute. It allows you to start using the data immediately, while the whole data set is being computed.
Lets say we want to get all the prime numbers that are smaller than a maximum number.
We first define the function that checks if a number is prime:
for divisor in range(2, int(number ** 0.5) + 1):
if number % divisor == 0:
Then, we define the iterator class that will include the __iter__ and __next__ methods:
def __init__(self, max):
self.max = max
self.number = 0
self.number += 1
if self.number >= self.max:
Primes is instantiated with a maximum value. If the next prime is greater than the max, the iterator will raise a StopIteration exception, which ends the iterator.
When we requ...
A curious feature about the Russia-gate "scandal" is that its proponents ignore the growing number of moments when their evidence undercuts their narrative. Instead, they press ahead toward a predetermined destination in much the way that true-believing conspiracy theorists are known to do. For instance, The New York Times ran a story on Monday, entitled "Operative Offered Trump Campaign Access to Putin," detailing how a conservative operative "told a Trump adviser that he could arrange a back-channel meeting between Donald J. Trump and Vladimir V. Putin, the Russian president, according to an email sent to the Trump campaign" - and apparently described to the Times by a helpful source on Capitol Hill. The Times quoted the email from National Rifle Association member Paul Erickson to Trump campaign adviser Rick Dearborn as saying, "Putin is deadly serious about building a good relationship with Mr. Trump. ... [Putin] wants to extend an invitation to Mr. Trump to visit him in the Kremlin before the election." An NRA conference in Louisville, Kentucky, was supposed to be the location for the "first contact" between the Russians and the Trump campaign, according to the email.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of John Coltranes death. With the possible exception of Philip Larkin (metallic and passionless nullity was one of the nicer things he had to say about him), Coltrane has had a pretty good press. Indeed, in my opinion there is a form of writing about Coltrane whose main characteristic is hyperbolic hagiography rather than sober critical reflection.
You dont have to buy in to the hyperbole, though, to recognise that Coltrane was a superb and interesting musician whose influence can be seen all over contemporary jazz. There are also many John Coltranes from the pop lyricism of My Favourite Things, for example, to the hippy spirituality (or long-winded and portentous demonstrations of religiosity: Larkin again) of A Love Supreme; from the Blue Note hard bop of Blue Train, to the free jazz of Ascension.
Gilad Atzmons new CD, The Spirit of Trane, is a tribute to John Coltranes more lyrical side, the Coltrane of ballads, the sentimental Coltrane. Atzmon mainly plays tenor and soprano sax on the album and is joined by Frank Harrison (piano), Yaron Stavi (bass) and Enzo Zirilli (drums). Several of the tracks also feature the Sigamos String Quartet (Ros Stephen and Marianne Hayes (violins), Felix Tanner (viola) and Laura Anstee (cello)).
The album kicks off with Duke Ellingtons In a Sentimental Mood. Coltrane played this on his 1962 collaboration with the Duke. Atzmon plays soprano sax, an instrument Coltrane made very much his own. There is a marvellously lush string accompaniment which sounds like a full orchestra rather than a quartet. The whole has a touch of Charlie Parker With Strings about it and, sure enough, it turns out that Birds work with strings was an early influence on the young Atzmon. Yaron Stavi plays a short but very effective solo on bass. Atzmons timing and dynamics are spot on and the whole is a beautifully conceived piece of music which could be appreciated by jazz and non-jazz fans alike...
Recent events in Mapuche territory in Argentina suggest a growing spiral of repression and violence towards the country's indigenous peoples.
On Saturday 25 November 2017, Rafael Nahuel, 22, from the city of Bariloche in Ro Negro province, was murdered in an ongoing territorial conflict between the Argentine state and organisations of the Mapuche people. He was killed by a 9mm bullet that entered through the gluteus and lodged in his lung.
While the circumstances are being investigated, the accusations point to the Albatros Group, a special command of the Argentine Naval Prefecture, whose officers, armed with Heckler & Koch MP5 automatic submachine guns (using 9mm caliber ammunition) allegedly opened fire on "15 or 20 people who attacked them with spears and bolas."
The Mapuche had recovered the territory, located in a national park, about two months ago. They made it public on 11 November and were evicted on Thursday 23 November. The event in which Nahuel died and two others were injured took place two days later.
Since March 2015 when a group of Mapuches recovered the territory of Pu Lof en Resistencia, in the department of Cushamen, from the hands of the transnational Benetton state action in response to territorial conflicts in the Rio Negro and Chubut mountain ranges has produced one disappeared person (Santiago Maldonado, who ultimately was found dead), one dead man (Rafael Nahuel), at least twenty wounded, and a similar number of detainees and defendants.
The historical territory of the Mapuche people (mapu = land; che = people) is located in southern South America, in the area known a...

Millenials get a bad rap for being lazy entitled snowflakes who cant take criticism or do a hard days labor. We also are criticized for pandering to Islamist sensibilities out of our misplaced desire for political correctness. Well, hold my avocado toast, old timer, because I need to explain some things to you.
This is your fault.
No, not you specifically (dont get cranky), but the fault of baby boomers in the aggregate. Youre the generation thats held power since the late 60s (sorry Gen X, you never quite rocked the boat enough to get attention). Dont get upset you didnt know any better. You just werent paying attention and now were here, with terrorist attacks a possibility anywhere and at any time.
So heres how the baby boomers set us up for radical Islam.
Since the 1970s, the government of Saudi Arabia has been spending money like a sailor on shore leave to fund extremism around the world. Its estimated theyve spent somewhere in the region of $100 billion funding their ultraconservative brand of Islam worldwide paying for schools, mosques and extremist literature. All that money to support ideas that women are worth less than men, that gay people and apostates should be killed, etc.
But where did they get the money? Boomers gave it to them. Your thirsty little cars guzzled the stuff down like there was no tomorrow and you made no effort to invest in different sources of power.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) Iraq demanded on Thursday that the U.S. government backtrack on a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israels capital and summoned the U.S. ambassador in Baghdad to protest the decision.
U.S. President Donald Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on Wednesday and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, imperiling Middle East peace efforts and upsetting the Arab world and Western allies alike.
Shiite-majority Iraq is the only country to have an alliance with regional powerhouse Iran and the United States, who do not see eye-to-eye.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said it had summoned the U.S. ambassador in Baghdad and that it would hand him a memo protesting Trumps decision.
We caution against the dangerous repercussions of this decision on the stability of the region and the world, an Iraqi government statement said.
The U.S. administration has to backtrack on this decision to stop any dangerous escalation that would fuel extremism and create conditions favorable to terrorism, it said.
Iraqs top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani condemned the decision and called on the Umma, or Islamic nation, to unite its efforts and reclaim Jerusalem.
This decision is condemned and decried, it hurt the feelings of hundreds of millions of Arabs and Muslims, his office said in a statement.
But it wont change the reality that Jerusalem is an occupied land which should return to the sovereignty of its Palestinian owners no matter how long it takes, it said.
Dozens of Iraqis protested the decision in Baghdad, carrying signs saying Jerusalem is Arab and vowing to return in greater numbers the following day after Friday prayers.
A prominent Iraqi militia, the Iran-backed Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, said Trumps decision could become a legitimate reason to attack U.S. forces in Iraq.
Trumps stupid decision to make Jerusalem a capital for the Zionist will be the big spark for removing this entity from the body of the Islamic nation, and a legitimate reason to target American forces, said the groups leader Akram al-Kaabi.

Hey folks. The blog hasnt died or anything. Ive been tied up in something thats probably bigger than anything Ive ever pursued before, and Im pouring all my free time into it.
Just quickly sharing this article on medicine and eugenics.
Medicine is rife with old eponymsdiseases or body parts named after their discoverers or researchersthat are beginning to be replaced by more logical names for practical reasons. (The term rectouterine pouch, after all, tells us more precisely what we are talking about than pouch of Douglas).
But this was the first I had heard of the entire medical profession deciding to change an eponym for the sake of revoking honor from someone whose actions were now deemed immoral. And, more than that, the name change accompanied a small but repetitive teaching of why there was a new nameactively passing on the unethical history that led to greater understanding of a rare disease.
When other diseases gained new names, we were typically allowed to use the original eponym and the logical name interchangeably. But here? We were being told: Dont use this old name. This man was a Nazi, who used tissue from Nazi prisoners to make his discoveries. And this moment of reflection on the history of this diseases name happened almost every time I was taught about GPA.
The piece goes on to describe some pretty grizzly methods of discovery in medicine, so content warning for racism and extreme violence.

LANSING, Mich. Chuck Cottington, a friend you havent liked in years, has made it clear that he will be voicing unrelenting criticism for the upcoming Ready Player One film adaptation until its release next March, prompted or not, according to close sources.
That book is absolute gutter trash, said Cottington, in an unsolicited phone call late last night. You cant just roll a bunch of fan service and nostalgia together and trick me into thinking thats exciting. Can you think of anything more annoying?!
Cottington has been vocal about his disapproval for the franchise since Ernest Clines novel was initially published six years ago. Many sources have reported that he is generally the one to bring it up in conversation.

I see his point, but he also got me fired.

At a certain point in the not-too-distant future, the president of the United States is going to feel compelled to assert that he was taken in and duped by Michael Flynn and that he feels betrayed, his feelings are hurt, and that he didnt know one damn thing about any of it. I cant see any other way that Trump can get the separation from Flynn that hell need to survive in office.
The latest revelation begins with a text message received by someone in the inaugural crowd at 12:11pm on January 20th, 2016.
As President Trump delivered his inaugural address on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in January, his new national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, sent a text to a former business associate telling him that a plan to build nuclear power plants in the Middle East in partnership with Russian interests was good to go, according to a witness who spoke with congressional investigators.
Flynn had assured his former associate that U.S. sanctions against Russia would immediately be ripped up by the Trump administration, a move that would help facilitate the deal, the associate told the witness.
This was a chance encounter.
According to [Rep. Elijah] Cummingss letter, the witness said he met Alex Copson, Flynns former business associate, at an inaugural event. Copson is the managing director of ACU Strategic Partners, a Washington-based company that Flynn said he advised from April 2015 through June 2016, according to a financial disclosure he filed this August.
The witness told Cummings and committee investigators that Copson shared a text message he had just received from Flynn, who was on stage at the Capitol during Trumps speech.
Perhaps because of his eyesight or the glare, the witness couldnt read the text message but he did note the time stamp. Because he was disturbed by the conversation, he took contemporaneous notes. Lets look at the conversation:
As the president spoke, Flynn reportedly texted Copson that the nuclear project was good to go, the witness said Copson told him.
Mike has been putting everything in place for us, Copson said, according to the witness, adding: This is going to make a lot of very wealthy people.

Im no expert on the Church of Latter Day Saints, but I feel pretty confident in saying that their missionary work is pretty central to their whole belief system. For example, young men between the ages of 18 and 25 who meet standards of worthiness are strongly encouraged to consider a two-year, full-time proselytizing mission. I dont think too many Mormons consider this some kind of clever way of avoiding military service, although it obviously can serve that purpose.
Steve Bannon, however, obviously feels differently. At a rally for U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore in Fairhope, Alabama last night, Bannon attacked Mitt Romney:
Judge Roy Moore has more honor and integrity in that pinkie finger than your entire family has in its whole DNA, Bannon said in his 30-minute speech at Oak Hollow Farm. You hid behind your religion. You went to France to be a missionary while guys were dying in rice paddies in Vietnam. Do not talk to me about honor and integrity, he said, referencing Romneys Mormon faith.
Theres a lot of heat in those remarks. He accuses Romney not only of being a coward who lacks honor and integrity, but of being an insincere missionary who was proselytizing out of his own convenience instead of any conviction. Bannons condemnation is sweeping enough to call into question the LDSs entire practice of missionary work if it happens to take place in wartime.
There are other religious faiths that would fare poorly by this standard, including the Quakers, but this is a pretty strong attack on a pillar of Mormon faith and religious practice, and I dont imagine it will be received well.
Amazingly, Bannon thinks he can disparage Mormonism like this and still have standing to talk about who will represent Utah in the Senate.
Bannon has reportedly toyed with the idea of endorsing Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) for reelection, fearful that a Hatch retirement would allow Romney to walk into the Senate in 2018 and become a conservative thorn in Trumps side.
Id like to know how Orrin Hatch feels about Bannons assertion that young Mormon men on mission are lacking in honor, integrity, courage, or conviction. Does Hatch endorse that view himself? Does he want Bannons support? Will he disavow Bannon and defend the honor of Mitt Romney and their religious brethren?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Weve been doing an okay job of holding up the fence, but Trump has some momentum now and hes beginning to knock shit down and break it. Next up is our relationship with the Muslim world, friend and foes alike. The Supreme Court got the ball rolling yesterday when they upheld Trumps travel ban for people from Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Apparently, tomorrow Trump will pour some kerosene on the fire by announcing that were moving our Israel embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Jerusalem as the capital.
Our allies are united in saying this is a very bad idea. Some of these countries may not be able to be our allies for much longer. Obviously our enemies are furious and will use this to recruit people who will do us harm. The worst part is probably that this is wholly unnecessary and cant even solve any problems in theory. This isnt like trying to rid your property of a wasps nest by hitting it with a bat. Its like taking a wasps nest out of your neighbors yard, carrying it home, and then hitting it with a bat.
Theres simply no need to move our embassy at this time, and its a particularly reckless move to recognize Jerusalem as Israels capital. Theres complete unanimity that this will cause a violent backlash and undue stress on our international relationships, with the only debate coming from people who welcome these problems.
The King of Jordans response was typical:
King Abdullah II strongly cautioned against the move, stressing that Jerusalem is the key to achieving peace and stability in the region and the world, according to a statement from the royal palace in Amman.
King Abdullah stressed that the adoption of this resolution will have serious implications for security and stability in the Middle East, and will undermine the efforts of the American administration to resume the peace process and fuel the feelings of Muslims and Christians, the statement said.
The reaction from NATO member Turkey was similar:
In a televised speech, Mr Erdogan addressed the US president directly, saying Mr Trump! Jerusalem is a red line for Muslims.
We could go as far as cutting diplomatic ties with Israel over the issue, he added.......
Were Donald Trump a learned man, he might prophesy those once false to him will grow in falseness. And thus denied sleep with worry, would cry out, Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.
Alas, Donald is not a learned man, with no counsel so wise as King Richard to warn of the treacheries to come.
If so, Mike Pence would prove a lesser threat.
Earl of Warwick: There is a history in all mens lives,
Figuring the natures of the times deceasd;
The which observd, a man may prophesy,
With a near aim, of the main chance of things
As yet not come to life, who in their seeds
And weak beginning lie intreasured.
Such things become the hatch and brood of time;
And, by the necessary form of this,
King Richard might create a perfect guess
That great Northumberland, then false to him,
Would of that seed grow to a greater falseness;
Which should not find a ground to root upon
Unless on you. Henry IV, Part 2, Act III, Scene I
Yes, Mike Pence plotted once when times were grim. Would of that seed not grow a greater falseness; which should not find a ground to root, unless on Trump again? Ere he plotted once; he shall plot again.
After the Access Hollywood tape came out on October 7th, 2016, Pence thought he saw an opening to defenestrate the top of the ticket and take it for his own.
Its been reported that Pence sent Trump a letter saying he needed time to decide whether he could stay with the campaign. But in fact, according to several Republicans familiar with the situation, he wasnt just thinking about dropping outhe was contemplating a coup. Within hours of The Posts bombshell, Pence made it clear to the Republican National Committee that he was ready to take Trumps place as the partys nominee. Such a move just four weeks before Election Day would have been unprecedentedbut the situation seemed dire enough to call for radical action
The furtive plotting, several sources told me, was not just an act of political opportunism for Pence. He was genuinely shocked by the Access Hollywood tape. In the short time theyd known each other, Trump had made an effort to convinc...
The essay below was originally published in May, but it's something I was chewing on for months before that. I had heard tell of an exurban area near my city (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) that was manufacturing it's very own "downtown" and I needed to see it for myself. While most of the local chatter was excitement about this development, I found myself more skeptical.
I wrote the following piece before I actually had the opportunity to visit Drexel Town Square but I can now report that one Saturday this fall, I made the trek south to see it up close. It looked almost exactly like I expected: half-empty cookie-cutter storefronts (just waiting to be filled with more chain businesses!), eerily vacant sidewalks and none of the life, vitality or excitement that a real downtown should have.
After we walked through the handful of dreary blocks around the Town Square, we stopped by the Woodman's Grocery next door (well not really next door; we had to hop in our car to get there in spite of the fact that it was mere yards away). We got some good deals on produce so the day wasn't a complete loss, but I have to say, I have no plans to visit Drexel Town Square again. I'll stick with the old but lovable downtown streets in my own neighborhood the ones that have been developed over decades of trial and error, not plopped down by a couple of moneyed developers and a misguided local government. - Rachel Quednau
Its not just like downtown. It is downtown. Thats the tagline for a new town square currently under construction in Oak Creek, Wisconsin (a second ring suburb of Milwaukee). Drexel Town Square is positioning itself as Oak Creeks new downtown, but unlike traditional downtowns where businesses, residences and public spaces are built gradually over time, and tested and intensified as demand grows, this development is being created from the ground up for more than $150 million in public and private funding....
Havent been so well, so Im (reluctantly) having to take looking after myself really seriously this month. Im making sure I stay in touch with people, doing everything I can to not beat myself up for being snail in wet concrete on valium levels of slow with work and life, and I even started doing yoga (which is how I know Im really desperate) because I was getting horrible tension headaches and migraines every day due to stress, and painkillers were doing fuckity all. (For anyone interested I do it at home in the kitchen in my pyjamas with this woman, whos kinda great and really gentle.) Taking an active role in your well-being when you are lacking motivation is knackering.
The best thing about being depressed to the backdrop of intense bouts of hypochondria and panic is that half of you gets to sit there petrified that youre dying the entire time, the other half is like Oh, I do hope so and the third half is just bawling at them both. Being mentally ill doesnt only involve being mentally ill; you also have to be your own advocate, treatment coordinator and crisis manager with increasing amounts of self-reliance because formal support on the NHS is now so scant. What is there is stupidly hard and slow to access, hopelessly time-limited or is simply non-existent (because yknow, Jeremy Hunt by and large wants disabled people wiped out) which leaves you on your own a lot of the time just doing your best to ride it out. I commend anyone else who is struggling with this, you are not alone.
Yesterday I realised I needed to do some art that was therapeutic rather than work-related/for anyone else. Some people do colouring books with the nice swirly patterns, but for me its more of a KIND HORSE WITH LONG HAIR SOLVE ILLNESS thing:
Also I am 24 tomorrow and god has blessed me with the mother of all coldsores, I think as a reminder that I will still be suffering with the skin of a sad youth into my mid-20s
Anyhow, thanks for reading. Stick with it (thats to myself and to you) x

A French halal food shop has been forced to close down for not selling pork and alcoholic beverages.
The Good Price mini-market in the town of Colombes is owned by a public rent control organization (called an HLM office) run by the city of Colombes and its mayor, Nicole Gueta. It was rented by a shopkeeper who stocked it with almost exclusively halal products, prompting a lawsuit.
This is a case that may seem unique but is still quite simple, the lawyer for the HLM office Franois Meyer told Breitbart. Colombes gave a lease to the company Good Price and, in the clauses of the lease, is inserted a mention for this business to be a general shop.
According to them, a general food shop includes selling alcohol and pork products. Lawyers for the Good Price mini-market argued that alcohol is not part of the general diet. It is called compliment, so there are no obligations.
The court agreed with the city of Colombes. Good Price has been ordered to shut down and to pay 4,000 euros for legal fees.
The case is highlights several complex aspects in the debate over integration and Islamism. The first is the legal aspect, the second is societal and the third is interpersonal.
In legal terms, a lease is a contr...

Ever since the day that we first got the idea to create ProtonMail, one of the most enduring challenges has been how to do email security right while simultaneously making encrypted email easy enough to use for normal people. Since our early days working from the CERN cafeteria, we have been working tirelessly to address this specific problem.
In the years since, we have made many great strides towards creating usable encrypted email, first with ProtonMails webmail interface and then with our award-winning iOS and Android secure email apps. However, one of our goals has always been to bring easy-to-use encrypted email to desktop. The problem is formidable. Desktop systems encompass multiple operating systems with dozens of popular email clients with their own adherents, and virtually none of them natively speak PGP, the email encryption standard upon which ProtonMail is built.
Around two years ago, we created a small task force to tackle this challenge. Today, we are finally ready to present ProtonMail Bridge.
In a single sentence, ProtonMail Bridge is an application that allows you to use your ProtonMail encrypted email account with your favorite desktop email client such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook, while simultaneously retaining the zero-access encryption and end-to-end encrypti...
Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945. The north end of Halifax was wiped out by the blast and subsequent tsunami. Nearly 2,000 people died, another 9,000 were maimed or blinded, and more than 25,000 were left without adequate shelter.

Its time for us to put some levels together that we can try and use to draw a profit from the market on an intraday basis right now so were going to jump straight into it so as to avoid missing out on any of the volatility that is coming at us thick and fast currently.
As ever, then, take a quick look at the chart below before we get started so as to get an idea what happened overnight and where things stand as we head into the European session this morning. The chart is a one-minute candlestick chart and it has our primary range overlaid in green.
As the chart shows, the range that we are using for the session today comes in as defined by support to the downside at 14578 and resistance to the upside at 14746. This is a pretty wide range, so intrarange trading is an option as things stand. Specifically, long on a bounce from support towards a target of resistance and, conversely, short on a correction from resistance towards a target of support.
Looking at things from a breakout perspective, if we see price close above resistance, we will enter long towards an immediate upside target of 14800. A stop loss on the trade at 14730 defines risk nicely.
Looking the other way, if price closes below support, it will signal a downside trade with an immediate short target of 14510. Again we need a stop loss on the position and somewhere in the region of 14600 looks like it should do the trick.
Lets see how things play out.

Palestinians were first to take to the streets following Trump's Jerusalem decision - a potentially fatal blow to their future statehood ambitions - as their leaders called for three days of rage against the controversial move.

The Australopithecus fossil, Little Foot, was discovered by Wits [University of the Witwatersrand] palaeoanthropologist Ron Clarke.
From the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa:
Litte Foot takes a bow
South Africas oldest, and the worlds most complete Australopithecus skeleton ever found, introduced to the world
December 6, 2017
South Africas status as a major cradle in the African nursery of humankind has been reinforced with todays unveiling of Little Foot, the countrys oldest, virtually complete fossil human ancestor.
Little Foot is the only known virtually complete Australopithecus fossil discovered to date. It is by far the most complete skeleton of a human ancestor older than 1.5 million years ever found. It is also the oldest fossil hominid in southern Africa, dating back 3.67 million years. The unveiling will be the first time that the completely cleaned and reconstructed skeleton can be viewed by the national and international media.
Discovered by Professor Ron Clarke from the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, the fossil was given the nickname of Little Foot by Prof. Phillip Tobias, based on Clarkes initial discovery of four small footbones. Its discovery is expected to add a wealth of knowledge about the appearance, full skeletal anatomy, limb lengths and locomotor abilities of one of the species of our early ancestral relatives.
This is one of the most remarkable fossil discoveries made in the history of human origins research and it is a privilege to unveil a finding of this importance today, says Clarke.
After lying undiscovered for more than 3.6 million years deep within the Sterkfontein caves about 40km north-west of Johannesburg, Clarke found several foot bones and lower leg bone fragments in 1994 and 1997 among other fossils that had been removed from rock blasted from the cave years earlier b...

The Snapdragon 845 is a large step in terms of SoC architectures as it's the first to employ ARM's DynamiQ CPU cluster organization. Quickly explained, DynamIQ enables the various different CPU cores within an SoC to be hosted within the same cluster and cache hierarchy, as opposed to having separate discrete clusters with no shared cache between them (with coherency instead happening over an interconnect such as ARM's CCI). This major transition is probably the largest to date that we've seen in modern mobile smartphone ARM consumer SoCs.
[...] The Kryo 385 gold/performance cluster runs at up to 2.8GHz, which is a 14% frequency increase over the 2.45GHz of the Snapdragon 835's CPU core. But we also have to remember that given that the new CPU cores are likely based on A75's we should be expecting IPC gains of up to 22-34% based on use-cases, bringing the overall expected performance improvement to 25-39%. Qualcomm promises a 25-30% increase so we're not far off from ARM's projections.
The silver/efficiency cluster is running at 1.8GHz, this is clocked slightly slower than the A53's on the Snapdragon 835 however the maximum clocks of the efficiency cluster is mainly determined by where the efficiency curve of the performance cluster intersects. Nevertheless the efficiency cores promise 15% boost in performance compared to its predecessor.
The Adreno 630 GPU should provide up to 30% better performance than the Snapdragon 835's Adreno 540 at the same level of power consumption. Snapdragon 845 devices can record (encode) 2160p60 10-bit H.265 video, compared to 2160p30 for Snapdragon 835.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korea says a nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula has become a matter of when, not if, as it continued to lash out at a massive joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea involving hundreds of advanced warplanes.
In comments attributed to an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesman, North Korea also claimed high-ranked U.S. officials, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, have further confirmed American intent for war with a series of bellicose remarks.
Pompeo said Saturday that U.S. intelligence agencies believe North Korean leader Kim Jong Un doesnt have a good idea about how tenuous his situation is domestically and internationally. The Norths spokesman said Pompeo provoked the country by impudently criticizing our supreme leadership which is the heart of our people.
We do not wish for a war but shall not hide from it, and should the U.S. miscalculate our patience and light the fuse for a nuclear war, we will surely make the U.S. dearly pay the consequences with our mighty nuclear force which we have consistently strengthened, the spokesman said.
The comments were carried by the official Korean Central News Agency late Wednesday, hours after the United States flew a B-1B supersonic bomber over South Korea as part of a massive combined aerial exercise involving hundreds of warplanes. North Korean propaganda is often filled with extreme claims and threats, and the spokesmans comments were consistent with the tone of previous statements condemning Washington and Seoul.
South Koreas Joint Chiefs of Staff said the Guam-based bomber simulated land strikes at a military field near South Koreas eastern coast during a drill with U.S. and South Korean fighter jets.
Through the drill, the South Korean and U.S. air forces display...

DONALD TRUMP AND THE SEX INDUSTRY
Robert Brannon National Organization for Men Against Sexism
Sexuality is a central, life-enhancing, and important part of our lives, but its commercial exploitation for profits has had many negative consequences, for individuals, and for our society.
The National Organization for Men Against Sexism sponsors a National Task Group which monitors and critiques the commercial sex industry: a wide-ranging, constantly evolving array of businesses or activities which profit financially from satisfying, and often exploiting, our sexual interests and needs. In a patriarchal culture, a number of these activities are very clearly harmful to women and girls, in direct and indirect ways. Men and boys are also impacted in many ways, some of these also quite harmful.
Since the recent U.S. presidential election, there is great interest in what actions the new Trump administration will take on the important issues that concern us.
I wouldnt normally share things from this site, but this one makes sense and adds to the debate on whether a legal trade in ivory would aid conservation. KS

.France 24, screen capture | President Macron arrives in Doha on December 7, 2017.
Latest update : 2017-12-07
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Qatar on Thursday for a one-day trip to the small Gulf country as it faces continued isolation and a boycott by some of its Arab neighbors.
Macron landed and immediately traveled to the vast al-Udeid Air Base, home to some 10,000 American troops and the forward headquarters of the U.S. militarys Central Command. France also has a contingent of soldiers at the base, which is crucial to the ongoing fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and to the war in Afghanistan.
Macron smiled and shook hands with the French and American soldiers who greeted him at the base before walking into a meeting with the bases top commanders.
Speaking to coalition soldiers, he said the next few months of battle will determine the outcome of the war against the IS group in Iraq in Syria.
This military win does not signify the end of the operations and the end of our battle because first we need to stabilize and win peace in Iraq and Syria, he told troops. Next spring is decisive in the situation in Iraq.
Macron also stressed in his remarks at the air base that France wants to avoid partition in Syria and avoid the domination of certain international elements whose interests contradict peace.
The French president later will hold talks with Qatars ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Macron is traveling with Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who in 2015 as defense minister helped negotiate a multibillion dollar deal with Qatar to buy 24 Rafale fighter jets. Qatar may announce during Macrons visit that it will purchase up to 12 more of the French-made Dassault Rafale jets.
Macrons visit comes just days after a Gulf...

A team of physicists and mathematicians with Los Angeles based Quantum Gravity Research are developing a first-principles unified quantum gravity theory they call emergence theory. Still in the early stage of development, emergence theory attempts to unify, through mathematical and scientific rigor, the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics... and consciousness.
This film is presented in layperson terms and explains basics tenets of emergence theory, quantum mechanics and digital physics in ways that are meant to be communicative and fun. Daria Barazandeh has been pressuring the OWASA board to stop fluoridating since 2012. Before her public appearances, OWASA did not have a speaking limit for public petitions and requests. They implemented a 3 minute speech limit after they got tired of Daria continuing to question their conclusions and presumptions about the policy. This was admitted by Will Raymond in his speech at the same meeting - you can note that they are still playing these games with their 'technical difficulties' at the beginning.
Here, Daria has helped organize more than 25 people to attend this incredibly boring OWASA meeting and raise awareness about their negligence and obstinate attitude towards the general public. She does a great job exposing their inability to address many of the principled and ethical arguments we make, that are blatantly ignored. Unfortunately, OWASA counts on the public not really taking interest, because they ignore us when we call them out on ignoring us. That is why we have to document and upload example after example so as to build a chronological expose of their continued willing negligence in this matter.

The influential Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has called for a new uprising against Israel, starting on Friday. Speaking in Gaza on Thursday, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said, We should call for and we should work on launching an intifada in the face of the Zionist enemy. Most people in Bitcoin are familiar with Andreas Antonopoulos. He is a great speaker at events, successful author, and doesnt get involved in Bitcoin politics. However, one thing most people dont know is how he isnt a Bitcoin millionaire. That is slowly starting to change, thanks to a new donation campaign by the Bitcoin community.
A lot of people are surprised Andreas Antonopoulos hasnt made millions off Bitcoin. Most people who got involved during the early days and are still around make a good amount of money. At the same time, some of us have to work for our money paid in Bitcoin and use that money to cover bills and expenses. In the case of Andreas, that is exactly what happened over the years. Bills need to get paid and Bitcoin has been valued pretty low for most of the past nine years.
Roger Ver recently called out Andreas Antonopoulos over this development. As is usually the case, such debates spark an immediate reaction among the Bitcoin community. Because of this development, some people started donating healthy amounts of BTC to Andreas. That is only normal, as the Bitcoin community is often very helpful in these regards. The global availability of Bitcoin makes it easier to send money around the world as well.
I'm not a bitcoin millionnaire. I was working for free, instead of investing, for the first 2 years. Only recently got out of debt.
