Google has recently pulled 36 fake security apps from Google Play, after theyve been flagged by Trend Micro researchers. Posing as legitimate security solutions, and occasionally misusing the name of well-known AV vendors like Avast, the apps seemed to be doing the job: they showed security notifications and other messages, warned users about malicious apps, and seemingly provided ways to fix security issues and vulnerabilities: But, it was all an act: the notifications are bogus, More

Very interesting and worth trying to get this off the ground. But what is not stated clearly enough is the very important point that this will only get off the ground and have a chance of success if the rhino horn harvested from the rhinos that are bred can be sold. That is the only possible source of the sort of income that would make this viable. At the moment, as Humes unsuccessful rhino horn auction last year showed, horn cannot be sold internationally because of CITES regulations and international support, however misinformed and misplaced that view might be, for a continuing international rhino horn trade ban. Horn cannot be sold, except in a few countries (including South Africa, where there is no market for it other than as an export commodity), and so currently it cannot bring in the income to make this work to provide payments for rural communities. This point is quickly skated over in a short para in the article below, but is a massive stumbling block. Unless CITES rules are changed or countries opt out (rhino range states and potential horn buyers both have to leave CITES for international trade to work) then this will simply not take off. Laudable idea but pie in the sky under current conditions. KS
Southern Africa rhino breeding programme roll-out takes off
The South Africa-based world biggest rhino breeder, Mr John Hume has partnered with a local NGO to implement a Southern Africa Community Rhino Breeding Programme aimed reducing the rhino poaching crisis in the region, working together with Southern African governments and private rhino breeders.
Currently, Southern African rural communities; settled next to national parks and game reserves suffer costs from wildlife human-wildlife conflict with no benefits from rhinos and are inclined to collaborate with poachers to get benefits from the rhino.
Therefore, the decision to roll-out the Southern African Community Rhino Breeding Programme is aimed at increasing the rhino population and in the process, create opportunities for rural communities to benefit from rh...
New Delhi: With the committee of experts looking into a data protection framework for India refusing to divulge basic information about its meetings, the National Campaign for Peoples Right to Information (NCPRI) has written to its chairperson, Justice B.B. Srikrishna, to protest.

I felt compelled to write a strongly-worded mail to the prime ministers office after a young girl from my town, Bahraich, called me and told me how her husband gave her a triple talaq and her father-in-law, a mufti, said they will take her back after a halala. This despite the Supreme Court verdict, an Islamic scholar and former cabinet minister who resigned over the Shah Bano case told me. In the mail, he reiterated the need for a comprehensive reform of Muslim family law, and urged the government to write to concerned organisations and individuals, giving them a three-month period to submit proposals on a draft family law, conforming to constitutional and religious beliefs. He further suggested holding meetings with stakeholders and entrusting a parliamentary sub-committee with the task of processing these proposals for a report to be tabled in the parliament for it to delibera...
Conclusion Up Front
President Donald Trump would be well advised to proceed with an abundance of caution regarding any trust he might place in Michael Pence and/or Pam Bondi.
An abundance of evidence shows both Michael Pence and Pam Bondi are in willful and obnoxious defiance of President Trumps Executive Order on February 9, 2017 Presidential Executive Order on Enforcing Federal Law with Respect to Transnational Criminal Organizations and Preventing International Trafficking.

Elnathan John, author of the best-selling fiction Born On A Tuesday, once said that the greatest disservice anyone can do to himself as a Nigerian is to be poor. He was right; the survival kit in Nigeria is not filled with patriotism, truthfulness and being forthright. But if providence has not smiled on you yet and your hustle, no matter how legal or illegal it is, has not paid off, try as much...
Former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili, says her political agenda is to actively campaign against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election. Ezekwesili made this known through a series of tweets on Wednesday morning. The massive inflow of refugees into Germany has significantly contributed to the recent rise of violent crimes, a new study says. It adds that effective integration and more aid are needed to tackle the issue. Germany has been recording a decrease in violent offenses for more than seven years before the refugee crisis, with the total number of such crimes falling by 22 percent over that period. The massive influx of asylum seekers, however, reversed this trend, leading to a renewed increase in violent criminal acts, the study conducted by a group of criminologists and forensic experts stated. The review was conducted at a request of the German Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
Bitcoin, and the world of cryptocurrency, is a boys' club, say some experts, and that should be cause for concern.
Google Analytics results put the divide at 96.57 per cent men to 3.43 per cent women: https://coin.dance/stats/gender.
That's a huge red flag to Duncan Stewart, research director of Deloitte Canada's technology division. "It isn't merely that the value has risen as far and as fast as it has; it's the fact that it's 97 per cent men that is, in and of itself, a potential danger sign," he says. "There are studies out there that suggest men are predisposed towards bubbles in a way that women are not."
Stewart made his case in a recent online post about the subject: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/bitcoin-bubble-gender-split-says-probably-duncan-stewart/?trackingId=LlXWi2rCxUW0itfA92%2BhSQ%3D%3D
Stewart said he "cannot think of any security, currency or asset class in history that shows that extreme a gender divide and has been sustainable."
[...] Iliana Oris Valiente is a rarity in the cryptocurrency world. She has emerged as a female leader in this space and was recently chosen to lead consulting firm Accenture's global blockchain innovation division. Oris Valiente doesn't buy into the theory that an outsized amount of male interest in a particular asset in and of itself creates a bubble. "If we have primarily men involved in building the businesses and being the early-stage investors, they're likely to share the new tidbits and the new deals with their own established networks."
But without a major catalyst, she doesn't see the gender divide in this field narrowing anytime soon.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the industrys main regulatory arm, reports a net increase in short contracts; volume is sluggish, and a legacy bank has now outright forbid clients and advisers from trading in the relatively new product. While it is too early in the experiment to draw definitive conclusions, bitcoin futures might not be the boost enthusiasts hoped.
CFTC end of 2017 reporting noted Chicago Board Options Exchange (Cboe) bitcoin futures broke for short contracts, up by nearly 300 in the final week of last year. Analysts believe bubble talk consumed traders, triggering a selloff.
A raised net short position wasnt expected by most bulls heading into the history market. It isnt clear what the trend means longer term, but a thirty percent spot price correction was already in the works during 2017s final weeks which certainly didnt help matters. Overall, the worlds most popular cryptocurrency finished the year up well-over one thousand percent.
More than 100 years ago, in September of 1899, a category 4 hurricane hit Puerto Rico, killing 3400 people. A headline in the New York Times revealed the attitude of the day:
SUFFERING IN PUERTO RICO
Hurricane Deprived Lower Classes of All Means of Livelihood
MANY PEONS ARE STARVING
Such expressions lower classes, peons are painful to our modern, presumably enlightened sensibilities, but they are used in private by far too many people in the US today. And we wonder if the attitude reflected by these words is the real reason why the US government has done so little to save Puerto Rico. A statement signed by over 200 scholars, professors, writers, and Latin American experts contains these heartbreaking words:
Efforts are delayed for a population that the federal government considers expendable.
The situation is of course much more complicated. Below we present a small collection of insightful comments from a variety of sources on the issue. While it is complex, it is also tragically simple.
Puerto Ricans are not citizens like the rest of us, because Puerto Rico is not a state. It is a so-called commonwealth of the United States, whose people are denied electoral representation in the federal government that decides their political destiny: no voice in Congress, no vote in Presidential elections. This arrangement, born of Americas conquest of the island, in the Spanish-American War, makes the islanders more like colonial subjects than citizens of a democratic republic. They are, in effect, second-class citizens.

For farmers in hilly regions, especially those in Kerala and Karnataka, the choice of large-scale crops is limited. They grow either coffee or cardamom as intercrops with pepper. Any farmers success largely depends upon the yield she is able to harvest and the income through sales.
In the plains, however, it is the usual vegetables that are grown along with some banana trees.
Compared to farmers across the country, those in Kerala and Karnataka are generally smart about taking timely advise from scientists to improve their yields. They arent content with just growing crops.
This attitude is what helped B.H. Sreekantha of Vijayashree Plantations, Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka win the International Pepper Community award for the best farmer among black pepper growers across various countries.
What makes the award all the more valuable is that his plantation is situated in Yemmedoddi village in Tarikere taluk, which is considered as the dry belt...

As the new year approached, Huffington Post editor Emily McCombs tweeted that her resolutions for 2018 are to cultivate female friendships and band together to kill all men. She subsequently deleted the tweet and protected her account, but Internet Archive preserved it.
McCombs is a founder of the feminist site xoJane.com, and moved on from there to editorial director of the Huffington Post parenting section, which presumably is aimed at parents of both females and males. In another irony, McCombs is the mother of a son, whom presumably she neither wants to kill now or when he grows to be a man:

When I ran across The Essential Tension by Sonya Bahar, my first thought was that it sounded very much like something my PhD advisor could have written:
The Essential Tension explores how agents that naturally compete come to act together as a group. The author argues that the controversial concept of multilevel selection is essential to biological evolution, a proposition set to stimulate new debate.
The subtitle is Competition, Cooperation and Multilevel Selection in Evolution, which is more than vaguely reminiscent of the cooperation and conflict framework Rick Michod has built over the last twenty years.
This wont be a review, since I havent read the book. Im not willing to spend $70 on the e-book, and the Google Books preview is missing too much to try to read it there. There are chapters on, among other things, multicellularity in Dictyostelium and Volvox, biofilms, and experimental evolution, though, so Id be remiss if I didnt mention it.
The Volvox chapter (Multicellularity: Volvox) seems, from what I can see on Google Books, to be a fairly straightforward review of Volvox biology and evolutionary relationships within the Volvocaceae. It gets fairly detailed in parts:
These laboratories [Richard Starrs, Robert Huskeys, and David Kirks] identified a panoply of mutants MulB, MulC, MulD, MulX, MulA, MegA, R-1, R-2, RadA, doughnut, double-posterior, S16, pld, Inv, Dis, Exp, Rel, Flg, Eye, Rot, and many othersThe Mul mutants are known as pattern-switching mutants, and cause asexual spheroids to develop in a pattern similar to male or female spheroids. MulB leads to asexual spheroids with gonidia distributed similarly to the eggs in a female spheroid
The point of all this detail isnt always clear, at least not from the parts I can see. Theres no indication of a larger theme until the very end (again, there could be larger themes in the pages not shown in the preview, but what I can see reads very much like a straightforward review of what we know about Volvox and its relatives)....

Oregon has just passed a law that gives gas stations in rural counties the option of allowing self-pumping (in some rural counties this is allowed only between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.!) As you have probably heard, this incomplete lifting of an absurd restriction has some Oregonians upset and afraid.
I dont even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian ... I say NO THANKS! I dont like to smell like gasoline! one woman wrote.
No! Disabled, seniors, people with young children in the car need help. Not to mention getting out of your car with transients around and not feeling safe. This is a very bad idea. Grrr, another woman wrote.
Ive lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas ... This [is] a service only qualified people should perform. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas.
Most of the rest of the Americawhere people pump their own gas everyday without a second thoughtis having a good laugh at Oregons expense. But I am not here to laugh because in every state but one where you can pump your own gas you cant open a barbershop without a license. A license to cut hair! Ridiculous. I hope people in Alabama are laughing at the rest of America. Or how about a license to be a manicurist? Go ahead Connecticut, laugh at the other states while you get your nails done. Buy contact lens without a prescription? You have the right to smirk British Columbia!
All of the Oregonian complaints about non-professionals pumping gasonly qualified people should perform this service, its dangerous and what about the jobsare familiar from every other state, only applied to different services.
Once we got familiar with self-pumping it didnt seem like a problem, but its surprising we ever got self-pumping as it would have been easy to scare people into voting no. After all, the case for trained gas pumpers is far stronger than for licensed barbers. Perhaps we were less risk averse and complacent in the past. I dont think we could build the Hoover Dam today either.
Its easier to scare than to inform and we fear losses more than we desire gains so collective decision-making defaults toward stasis.

When New York Times columnist Paul Krugman made a hysterical election night prediction that a Trump presidency would lead to an immediate downturn in the financial markets from which the nation would probably never recover, most of his liberal audience nodded in agreement.
Krugman has since taken back that foolish guess, but he and other liberal pundits and economists have not backed off the idea Trump and his administration have no idea what theyre doing. No matter how high the Dow went during the last 13 months, Krugman and the rest of the liberal chorus have largely stuck to their prophecies of doom decrying any evidence otherwise as the result of either Trumpian luck or circumstances beyond his control.
Yet The Times reported in a front page feature Monday that there is now an emerging consensus in the business world, and even among economists, that a wave of optimism has swept over American business. And that wave is bringing with it the sort of investment in new plants, equipment and factory upgrades that bolsters economic growth, spurs job creation and may finally raise wages significantly.
Whats even more astonishing is that as the storys headline concedes, this impending boom is being directly caused by The Trump Effect. American businesses arent, as The Times points out, merely happily anticipating the cut in corporate tax rates provided by the reform bill passed last month by Congress. Whats really fueling the upturn, according to The Times, is the Trump administrations regulatory pullback.
Despite the widespread consensus in the mainstream media that the administration has been a disaster on all fronts, Republicans have often singled out regulatory reform as a highlight of Trumps first months in office. Liberal economists have dismissed this assertion as nothing more than a talking point to reassure Republicans that Trump was, despite his populist tone, trying to govern like a conservative. But, as The Times report points out, the impact of his orders to cut back on regulations that hamstring businesses is real.
Since business leaders are reassured that not only will many Obama-era regulations be cut back, but also that no new arcane rules will be implemented in the next few years, theyre able to plan with confidence. That means more investment, more jobs, and ultimately higher wages for workers in a trifecta that appeals to both big business and also to the needs of the working class voters who were responsible for electing Trump last year.
If even the front page of The Times is prepared to accept that Trumps policies are having a tangible and positive impact on the economy, then those who, like Krugma...
The latest dustup in the world of foreign policy gurus occurred when a memo written to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by Brian Hook, an influential policy aide, was leaked to Politico. The memo was written in May 2017, weeks after Tillerson made a speech where he called for the United States to balance the pursuit of our values overseas with our interests.
Its really important that all of us understand the difference between policy and values, Tillerson said.
In the controversial memo, Hook outlines foreign policy basicsthe difference between realism and idealismand seems to call for a major shift to a more realist foreign policy: Allies should be treated differentlyand betterthan adversaries. Otherwise, we end up with more adversaries, and fewer allies. Hook also says America should stop badgering allies on issues such as democracy, the rule of law, or human rights.
To back up his argument, Hook turned to history. According to the memo, foreign policy idealists have harmed American interests, such as when Jimmy Carter didnt fully support U.S. allies like the shah of Iran. Today, Hook feels that in the age of a rising China and widespread terror in the Middle East, there is even less optimism that the world can be reshaped simply by expressing American liberal values.
Because of this, Hook says the Trump administration should tout human rights primarily as a means to attack Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. This is because pressing those regimes on human rights is one way to impose costs, apply counter-pressure, and regain the initiative from them strategically.
Many, including Tom Malinowski, a former Obama administration State Department official, took issue with Hooks Machiavellian worldview for doing exactly what Russian and Chinese propaganda says we douse[ing] human rights as a weapon to beat up our adversaries while letting ourselves and our allies off the hook.
He utterly misses the elemental fact that Americas moral authority is one of our main advantages in the world, and that it would disappear if we apply it as selectively as he advises, said Malinowski. Malinowski also disagreed with Hooks reading of history. According to Politico, Malinowski argued that anti-Americanism in Iran started long before Carter, due to American intervention in Iran and support for the regime that followed.

Since Francis of Assisi devised the first manger scene in the hills of Guccio, the Christmas crche has represented the Incarnation, the hearts blood of Christian faith. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Jewish babe asleep on the hay embodiesincarnatesGods covenant with his people. The crche is an 800-year-old emblem of divinity ushered into time and history. It is a theological symbol, not a political one.
Christmas celebrates Gods own action, not our own. But contemporary culture is more amenable to politics, expressed in social action, than proclamations of God at work in the world. It is time now to align the crib scene with secular social justice concerns. Accordingly, the Vatican displayed a crche that collaborates with political agendas phrased in Christian terms.
Last years crche in St. Peters Square added a Maltese fishing boat to signify the plight of migrants. Its presence erased crucial distinctions between the ancient command to welcome the strangerhighly nuanced in biblical timeswith endorsement of mass migration. This year, the boat was absent from the crib scene but occupied Pope Francis Christmas homily.
His address exploited the common but faulty equation of Mary and Joseph with todays migrants (those who have lost their land, their country, their dreams). It calls for a revolutionary tenderness to welcome and protect all peoples kept at a distance, feared and forced to live on the edges of society.
Francis repeated the theme in his message for World Peace Day, January 1, 2018: Migrants and Refugees: Men and Women in Search of Peace. RadioVaticana released the speech in November, providing a keynote for Advent and preparing the way for his Christmas sermon.
For World Day of Peace, Francis called for a four-point program of action for welcoming, protecting, and promoting migrants. He also advocated international agreements to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration. The key word there is regular.
In anticipation of the political thrust of this years Christmas message, the crche was rebranded Nativity of Mercy. A suitable cast of new characters was also introduced to illustrate papal exhortation to embrace the stranger, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned.
Dotted among the customary shepherds and wise men are tableaux representing the corporal works of mercy. Life-sized terracotta figures in eighteenth-century Neapolitan dress bury the dead, visit the imprisoned, clothe the naked. With its eye on two upcoming United Nations global compacts, the updated crche splits the difference between the significance of Christmas and a tutorial on good works acceptable to international policy initiatives.
Resident YouTube frat boy Logan Paul recently uploaded and has since deleted a video in which he filmed and tactlessly reacted to the body of a man who had taken his life in Japans Aokigahara forest, a 12-square mile plot of land at the base of Mount Fuji that has garnered international attention for being one of the worlds most popular suicide sites.
Paul and his cohorts come across the body of a suicide victim and somehow deem it appropriate to record close-up footage of the dead mans body, while providing thoughtless running commentary on the man. While displaying a level of emotional disconnect that can only be explained by assuming that this guy must be a closeted sociopath, Paul laughs off his buddies discomfort at the situation, saying, What, you never stand next to a dead guy? while he continues to film his observational callousness.
Paul is rightly facing a relentless backlash. Countless actors, fellow content creators, and other celebrities have taken to their public spaces to call a repulsive spade a spade and are pressing YouTube to demonetize and remove Pauls account entirely. Paul, in a likely attempt to protect a significant income stream and the backbone of his social media empire, released a half-hearted, typed-out apology that made sure to remind readers of his massive viewership and influence, while seeming alarmingly disconnected from why he had so massively effed up.
And it was Paul, not YouTube, who ultimately took the video down, but not before it had amassed 6.3 million views, a particularly horrific thing to digest after realizing that most of Pauls 15.2 million subscribers are mostly kids. To put that into perspective: Logan Paul has more subscribers than the entire populations of Greece, Belgium, Portugal, or Sweden. Imagine, hypothetically, that half the population of one of those countries is children. Now imagine all of them watching 15 minutes of an insensitive idiot degrading the severity of suicide in order to garner clicks on a YouTube video to ultimately make himself more money. If youre not outraged, check your pulse.
Paul is deserving of every ounce of flack hes receiving for this, but I cant help but think that the steady decline of social media content and etiquette has somewhat paved the way for influencers to blindly believe that theyre well within the boundaries of acceptability when stepping outrageously out of line like this. To some degree, we shouldnt be surprised when a content creator cluelessly believes bleeping out curse words and blurring the face of a corpse is more important than not filming the body of a man who took his own life for the sake of shock value and views.
Almost every social media platform is riddled with targeted harassment, threats of physical harm and, chillingly, even death threats, many of which are often met with a blind eye from hos...
An idea came to me while I was listening to Taylor Swifts new album. I have decided that this is not an embarrassing admission. Swift is one of the great marketers of our time, her music is catchy and well-produced and, doggonit, I like it.
High-school me would not be embarrassed either. I remember being in a car full of student athletes on the way to after school practice windows down, Love Story blasting from the car radio. Teenage girls in sweatpants and sincere expressions, arms flailing out the windows, screamed more than sang Its a love story, baby just say Yes!'
It occurs to me now that we all liked Love Story, and many of Swifts earlier songs, because we wanted to believe them, and we were so young and inexperienced at life that we did believe them, if only for a few minutes on the way to practice.
This is not to say that Swifts earlier albums did not have realistic songs about love and loss. Tear Drops on My Guitar (2008) and White Horse (2010) come to mind. But there is a different tone compared to her latest albums. While the older songs deal with breakups and unrequited love, there is an air of disappointment in them that makes listeners believe things should have turned out differently. Maybe it is the air of a sincere idealism so common in girls that age.
This idealism seems to be gone from Swifts newest album Reputation (2017) and even her last album 1989 (2015). In its place is a shrewd, calloused attitude that says, I dont have any dumb idealistic expectations about relationships anymore. Try to take advantage of me at your own peril.
This first came through with Swifts 2014 hit single Blank Space (You can tell me when its over/if the high was worth the pain) and is even more developed in her latest single Ready for it (Knew he was a killer/First time that I saw him/Wonder how many girls he had love and left haunted). Many are chalking up this new T-Swift to your typical pop artist trying to mature their brand and grow their fan base. But I think there is another reason.
I see this callousness in the same girls screaming Love Story at the top of their lungs. Theyre now twenty-something professionals and have experienced what this world has to offe...
The Oregon Court of Appeals decided unanimously this week to uphold a $135,000 fine against the owners of a local cake shop who declined to use their artistic skills to create a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. Sound familiar? Its a similar case to Masterpiece Bakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, argued before the Supreme Court in early December. In that case, baker Jack Phillips argues the government cannot compel speech that is against an individuals sincerely held belief.
In a nation whose people, politics, and especially religious beliefs are sharply divided, the Masterpiece decision will have critical effects on the preservation of the right to disagree, free speech, and freedom of belief in America. In the Oregon case, the baker owners Aaron and Melissa Klein were forced to pay emotional distress damages under Oregon law, which essentially means that if a customer feels offended on a basis protected by anti-discrimination law, he can successfully sue for damages.
What is most alarming about the Oregon courts opinion is the rejection of the Kleins argument that their custom designs rise to the level of artistic expression that is a clear message intended by the author. Rather, the court irrationally held that it is the burden of the speaker to show that his or her message is perceived correctly by others.
Although we accept that the Kleins imbue each wedding cake with their own aesthetic choices, they have made no showing that other people will necessarily experience any wedding cake that the Kleins create predominately as expression rather than as food, the opinion held.
This is the courts sleight of hand and end run around the First Amendment. Free speech and freedom of expression are fundamental rights held by the speaker. The Constitution does not protect a hearer or perceiver of speech from his or her subjective offense, misperception, oras the lesbian couple alleged in the Oregon caseemotional and mental distress.
Meaning and expression have always been and must be inherently vested with the author or speaker, otherwise they become literally meaningless. If meaning is left open to the subjective whim of the perceiver, communication itself cannot happen.
You may disagree with the content of this article, but the words and phrases that I as the author choose and intend to convey are not open for subjective determination. Any mistake of communication, whether through my poor word choice or your poor understanding, do not negate the original intent of what I actually intended.
This kind of rationale from a court of law is the hallmark o...
This was a truly great year for cinema, and I struggled over this list, especially since horror is my favorite film genre and it has seen a massive resurgence of quality in the last decade. 2017 was one of the strongest years in this trend so far.
That includes the massive critical and blockbuster successes of Get Out and the first installment of It, as well as M. Night Shyamalans return to form with his excellent Unbreakable spinoff Split. We also saw three excellent Batman films (Justice League not included) and three awesome Kaiju films, with more on the way.
We had a bold, epic, and controversial new Star Wars, two follow-ups to legendary films by Ridley Scott that didnt stink, as they almost certainly should have, two Wonder Woman movies, an epic end to the excellent Planet of the Apes trilogy, and some amazing stuff on Netflix! Ticket sales may be down, but cinemas vitals are strong.
So here is where I finally came down on the top 10 movies from 2017.
I flipped and flopped over this because I know it wasnt actually the best film that came out this year. But it might be the most important, and it was certainly my favorite.
We live in an era where facts are supposedly up for debate, where news is suspect and partisan. But in the midst of all this nonsense there was a tiny flicker of truly bipartisan journalism. It was the myth-busting Hulu documentary Batman and Bill, the best Batman film ever made.
The Dark Knight and Mask of the Phantasm are better adaptations of the character, but this film tells the true origin story of the greatest superhero ever. Bob Kane has always been credited as the man behind the bat, but his sordid tale makes Charles Foster Kane look like Brian Gumble.
The true Batmans name was Bill Finger. While fans like me have known the truth for a long time, it took the dogged guts of Marc Tyler Nobleman to finally bring the truth into the gloriously tragic light. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his journalistic work on this deep, dark secret. The truth really is more amazing than fiction. We had to say goodbye to one Batman this year (Adam West), and thanks to Nobleman millions have gotten to know a Batman they didnt even know existed.
Get Out was hands down the best fictional film of the yearand not because it tries to be woke. This is the best film of the year because every aspect of it was Hitchcockian perfection. Like Hitch and all his best horror disciples, this film breaks free of mere genre appeal. It works very well as a horror movie, but even better as a film.
One of the strongest directorial debuts ever, it deserves to win every single award it gets nominated for, and oodles more. Ide...
My recent investigation into insurance commissioners failure to consider, let alone prepare for, a new presidential administration withdrawing unconstitutional cost-sharing reduction payments when examining rates for the 2017 plan year included one particular story worth highlighting.
In Montana, the insurance commissioner branded Blue Cross Blue Shields premium increase as unreasonable, in part because it wished to prepare for an eventualitynamely, withdrawal of the cost-sharing reduction paymentsthat the commissioner herself ignored.
Democrats used this type of naming and shamingor, if one prefers, public scapegoatingof insurance companies to help get Obamacare passed back in 2010. Now, they look to do the same thing to pharmaceutical companies. The example in Montana thus could serve as a precursor of liberals future strategy, and the problems inherent with it.
As noted last month, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana first requested that state regulators permit it to stop reducing cost-sharing to low-income beneficiaries if the federal government withdrew the payments reimbursing insurers for those discounts. However, federal regulators rightly noted that Obamacare requires insurers to lower cost-sharing for qualified individuals, regardless of whether the federal government provides reimbursement for this, making this proposal impossible to implement.
Because it could not stop lowering cost-sharing if the federal reimbursements ceased, Blue Cross Blue Shield requested a higher premium increase for 2017, to cushion against the risk of an unfunded mandatethe federal government requiring the company to lower cost-sharing without reimbursing it for that. However, Montanas insurance commissioner, Monica Lindeen, dubbed the carriers proposed premium increase unreasonable.
In a letter of deficiency posted on the commissions website, Lindeen found several portions of the premium increase proposed by Health Care Services Corporation (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montanas parent company) unreasonable, including the portion linked to uncertainty over the cost-sharing reduction payments:
HCSC has added 4.2% to its rates because it believes that the government will lose a lawsuit that concerns the validity of the appropriation for cost-sharing reductions and that CMS [the federal Center...

Prime Minister Narendra Modi keeps claiming historical firsts. However, the one thing he can genuinely claim as a real first is the fact that he is the first prime minister in democratic India to never have held a press conference.
With barely 16 months left for his term to end, he has not felt the need to hold himself and his government accountable to a free press. How fundamental this is for a real democracy is evident in the fact that even US President Donald Trump, with his permanent fulminations against fake news and a press he perceives as irremediably hostile, has held regular press conferences and continued the well-established practice of the White House spokesman holding nearly daily briefings for accredited correspondents.
Ending age-old traditions
Modi used to mockingly call his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh Maun Mohan Singh, but he has beaten Singh in his bid to take away the meta-institutional respectability of a free press.
Unlike Modi, who is an elected prime minister, Singh was a nominated prime minister. But Singh did not shy away fro...

In the last year Ive been doing some part time digital comms work, in part as a preparation for a more public project Ive been working on with my Swedish based colleague, John Kellden.
Right from the start of Slugger back in 2002 Ive kept a watching brief on how digital innovation is changing how we relate to each other. As blogging and micro blogging (Twitter/FB) has gone in house to the mainstream so have the worst (as well as some of the better) habits of the old bloggerverse.
Whats often missing, and which is a key part of Johns work, is the power (and the art) of conversation. Thats in part because of what always applied to the conventional news business applies to social media driven news cycles: if it bleeds, it leads.
With click bait riding over editorial choice, this promotes conflict over issues that build and maintain the connective tissues of society. No doubt citizens are enjoying the new power. From Libya (Information networks will define future conflicts) to the impact of Israels 2014 assault on Gaza, spectators are on the pitch like never before.
Its also introduced and random instability into systems that we held in place by the inability of pre network systems to facilitate the many to many conversations we now take for granted. Compulsive POTUS watcher Michael Wolff, has even posited the idea that Donald Trump is an accidental President (not that he didnt want to win).
It fits with how networks operate as open as opposed to closed feedback loops. In Trumps case it is also eerily reminiscent of Douglas Adams fictional improbability drive. Theres a tension between the convening power of the Labour Party in the June election, which contrasts with the power of content marketing, which won the 2016 EU Referendum.
Both work in ways the new digital platforms make hard to track in the uncharted margins of undecided and prior non voters. The problem is that much political life in the digital era is fuelled by a pervading sense of frustration and discontent (mostly with dry data which tells a story which diverges from lived reality.

We will admit that it is unlikely you have enough gear in your basement to make a solar cell using these steps. However, it is interesting to see how a bare silicon wafer becomes a solar cell. If youve seen ICs going through fabrication, youll see a lot of similarities, but there are some differences.
The process calls for a silicon wafer, some ovens, spin coaters, photolithography equipment, and a dice saw, among other things. Oh, you probably also need a clean room. Maybe you should just buy your solar cells off the shelf, but it is still interesting to see how they are made.
Modern solar cells have some extra structures to improve their efficiency, but the cells in this video are pretty garden-variety. For example, some experimental cells use multiple layers of active devices, each tuned to absorb a different wavelength of light.
If you really want to make your own, theres another process where you can start with some copper and wind up with a kind of solar cell that uses a copper-based semiconductor material. But dont be fooled into thinking that making the silicon variety is totally out of reach to hackers, weve seen [Sam Zeloof] pull it off.
Jason Todd, also known as the Boy Wonder has returned to base after the Christmas break but has still refused to comment on Batmans alleged body odour problem. Speaking at Gotham City airport, Todd denied he escapes by air for the winter holidays every year in order to avoid witnessing episodes in which Batman abuses mistletoe protocol only to be disappointed by potential partners put off by the smell of bat excrement.
One starlet said the only reason Batman hasnt been involved in any Hollywood scandals is that they cant even bear to be in the same room as him. Meanwhile Jack Nicholson, the actor most associated with the Joker in the Batman movies told reporters: Its the rubber suit. That and his taste for Brussel Sprouts at this time of the year. The last time I shared the Batmobile with him I demanded the top came off.
Fans hoping to see the Batmobile at an exhibition in the New Year are also likely to be disappointed after the vehicle suffered a breakdown. The AA said they were unable to replace a wheel assembly because the model does not appear in our database.
The technology used to produce, record, and process music has become ever more sophisticated and awe-inspiring, especially in the capability of software to emulate real instruments and acoustic environments. Digital emulation, or modeling, as its called, doesnt simply mimic the sounds of guitar amplifiers, pianos, or synthesizers. At its best, it reproduces the feel of an aural experience, its textures and sonic dimensions, while also adding a seemingly infinite degree of flexibility.
When it comes to a technology called convolution reverb, we can virtually feel the air pressure of sound in a physical space, such that listening in may be viewed as much as a spatial experience as it is a temporal one. So notes Stanfords Icons of Sound, a collaboration between the Universitys Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and the Department of Art & Art History. The researchers in this joint project have combined resources to create a performance of Byzantine chant from the 6th century CE, simulated to sound like it takes place inside a prime acoustic environment designed for this very music, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

If you want to know how much money the city of Chicago spends on holiday parade security in a given year, you can file an open records request with the city for the details.
If you want to know how a college president spends his or her time, you can ask for his or her official calendar through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
FOIA allows anyone to request information from the government. In my first six months at ProPublica Illinois, Ive sent over 1,018 requests for information, to everyone from the Department of Transportation to the state lottery.
As a data reporter, I need to understand what information government bodies across the state keep, how they keep those records and what they dont retain in documents or databases. To do that, I need to know different state and local agencies, and maintain a list of contacts throughout the state.
Finding your way through some of the records systems is like walking in the dark and getting information can take a lot of time. While Ive sent requests all over the country, Ive learned Illinois has its own quirks.
Here are a few things Ive learned about FOIA in Illinois that might help you get the information you want.
Filing records requests takes time, persistence and putting a bit of pressure on officials to have them produce information on time. Illinois law requires agencies to respond to requests within five business days, so typically I give them a call if I dont hear back when the deadline passes.
Compared to other places where I've filed FOIAs, agencies in Illinois seem more likely to immediately ask for an extension and they often cite the same reason....
A potential landslide on Rattlesnake Ridge in Yakima County is threatening homes and Interstate 82 near Yakima. The area of concern is east of Union Gap, east of Thorp Road -- an area also known as Anderson Quarry. A section of Thorp Road has been closed as a precaution and Yakima County Emergency Management has urged some homeowners to evacuate. The landslide, which is 20 acres in size, is moving at a rate of about 1.3 feet per week and is accelerating each week, according to state geologist Dave Norman. The concern is that the landslide would keep moving, even closer to I-82. Video shot from a drone showed the landslide in striking clarity, with giant fissures in a hillside, widening, as the earth shifts.

AFPAFP/File / by Fulya OZERKAN | Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had repeatedly slammed the New York trial of a Turkish banker as a plot against Turkey
The US court has interfered in Turkeys domestic affairs in an unprecedented way based on so-called evidence that is only fit for forgery and political abuse, the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.
A jury in New York found Atilla guilty on Wednesday of five counts of bank fraud and conspiracy.
The federal trial hinged on the testimony of well-connected Turkish-Iranian businessman Reza Zarrab, who became a government witness after admitting his involvement in the multi-billion-dollar gold-for-oil scheme to subvert US economic sanctions against Iran.
His testimony implicated former Turkish ministers and Erdogan in the scheme, and identified 47-year-old Atilla as a key organiser.
Turkeys foreign ministry branded the US ruling as unfair and unfortunate, and a shame of law.
Erdogans spokesman Ibrahim Kalin meanwhile described the conviction as a scandalous decision in a scandalous case and a shameful scenario.
Erdogan had repeatedly slammed the trial as a plot against Turkey and, according to American newspaper reports, had often raised the case in talks with US leaders.
Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, at that point part of Zarrabs legal team, had even met Erdogan in Ankara in search of a solution to the case.
Zarrab, a prominent gold trader, agreed to testify after striking a deal to plead guilty to violating US sanctions in a switch that infuriated Ankara. His assets in Turkey were later seized.
Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag blasted the case as a political plot, saying the jurys conviction doesnt have any legal value from Turkeys point of view.
This decision is against international law, he wrote on Twitter.
Ties between Turkey and the US have been strained over a number of issues including Washingtons re...
Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) is coming under increasing pressure over its illegal order banning the recognition of tribal forest rights in tiger reserves. The order prompted Survival International to launch a global tourism boycott in November.
Information released to Survival has revealed that Indias tribal peoples Commission (officially called the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST)) has directly challenged the NTCAs order in private meetings in Delhi. The Commission demanded that the NTCA suspend any planned evictions of tribal peoples, who have been dependent on and managed their forests for millennia.
After demanding to meet with the NTCA, the Commission argued that the order violates Indias Forest Rights Act which guarantees tribal peoples rights to their forests. It was intended to address the historical injustice against tribes and other traditional forest dwellers.
In November, representatives of tribal communities met with many human rights and environment activists in Delhi, amidst mounting concern over the NTCA order.
J.K. Thimma, a Jenu Keruba man who lives in Nagarhole National Park, and was present at the meeting, said: The NTCA order is an attack against our culture and our tradition. This is anti-Constitutional and the NTCA have no right to stop the implementation of an Act passed by the Parliament This is denial for our existence. The order needs...

given until January 23rd 2018 to have their SIM cards
Communications Minister Sam Basil says the SIM registration is vital in regard to minimizing security risks towards the 2018 APEC meetings in PNG.
Basil also called on mobile phone operators to use SMS registration to make it convenient for their customers in rural areas.
Over the last four weeks, it has been a very crucial time for mobile phone users across Papua New Guinea to have their SIM cards registered.
Since July 2017, mobile phone communication operators have been sending out messages to users to register their SIM cards to avoid deactivation by December 31st.
Communications Minister Sam Basil says customers were given enough time to register their sim cards and have to do so within the given period.
Customers in Lae who have travelled in from rural areas have expressed frustration saying the process of registration is quite difficult.
" We would encourage the operators (Mobile companies) to use SMS registration so that customers (especially rural users) can use SMS to register while the operators can take some time to verify, says Minister Basil.
While Prime Minister Peter ONeill has given approval for an extension on registration of sim cards until January 23rd , mobile phone operators have been urged by Minister Basil to provide alternative options to register their users.....read more on PNG Technology News site : PNG eHow

While almost 85% of Syrian territory has now been liberated from ISIS and other terrorist groups, according to Russian Ministry of Defense, and dialogue on political settlement and reconciliation is going on at a steady pace, the question of economic reconstruction is such that is going to leave a paramount impact on the ultimate outcome of the Syrian end-game; for, in the absence of meaningful resources of reconstruction, political settlement will remain fragile, likely to suffer fragmentation. The US and its allies, both in Europe and the Arab world, are not yet willing to invest economic resources in Syria to help it rebuild, estimated cost of which is US$ 226 billion. The reason for this tacit refusal to provide resource is the same old claim on Assads supposed illegitimacy. According to this proposition, if Syria is to receive aid and assistance for reconstruction, Assad must leave his office; although this proposition doesnt take into account the fact that next presidential elections in Syria would take place in 2021, and as democratic practices go, Assad can be sent home only then through popular vote.
For the West, therefore, the hope of aid from them to Syria is also possibly the last leverage they have at their disposal to influence the Syrian end-game. In fact, the European Unions top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, has clearly stated this and further said that Western nations must make clear (to Syria, Russia, Iran) that their participation (in economic reconstruction of Syria) will start only when the political transition will be agreed on in Geneva (and their terms agreed upon with regard to Assads exit from power). Besides it, some reports have indicated that global institutions like World Bank do not intend to pull out their chequebook for Syria because Western governments have signaled that they will not aid reconstruction while Assad is in power.
However, this is not something that the conveners, organizers and participants of Syrian national dialogue at Sochi have in mind and are trying to achieve. Clearly enough, the path that is being crafted at Sochi leads to Assads stay in power at least until next presidential elections, which means that the West will not be sending money to re-build Syria and that Syria will have to rely on non-Western sources to start re-building.

It's Newfoundland, 1986. Fourteen-year-old Bun O'Keefe has lived a solitary life in an unsafe, unsanitary house. Her mother is a compulsive hoarder, and Bun has had little contact with the outside world. What she's learned about life comes from the random books and old VHS tapes that she finds in the boxes and bags her mother brings home. Bun and her mother rarely talk, so when Bun's mother tells Bun to leave one day, she does. Hitchhiking out of town, Bun ends up on the streets of St. John's, Newfoundland. Fortunately, the first person she meets is Busker Boy, a street musician who senses her naivety and takes her in. Together they live in a house with an eclectic cast of characters: Chef, a hotel dishwasher with culinary dreams; Cher, a drag queen with a tragic past; Big Eyes, a Catholic school girl desperately trying to reinvent herself; and The Landlord, a man who Bun is told to avoid at all cost. Through her experiences with her new roommates, and their sometimes tragic revelations, Bun learns that the world extends beyond the walls of her mother's house and discovers the joy of being part of a new family -- a family of friends who care.Busker Boy is Native, and apparently, there is a lot of Native content. At one point, someone calls Busker Boy a "drunken Indian" and Bun tries to intervene. There's also something about the actor who played the part of Tonto. I'll pick up a copy at the library and be back with a review.
This 11 December 2017 video is called International Astronomical Union approves 86 new star names from around the world.
By Mariah Quintanilla, 9:00am, January 2, 2018:
86 stars get official names
Choices reflect international community
In December, astronomers and space enthusiasts received an early present: 86 newly official star names.
Such designations are often derived from Arabic, Greek or Latin origins. But the new monikers also draw inspiration from ancient mythologies and historical star names from indigenous cultures around the world, including in China, Australia and southern Africa. The star names were officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union, which oversees the naming of objects in space, and announced on December 11. Here are some of the names we thought shined the brightest.
According to South African lore, the indigenous Khoikhoi people nicknamed the pair of stars just before the end of the scorpions tail xami di mura, meaning eyes of the lion.
Fafnir is a dwarf from Norse mythology who became a dragon to guard his treasure. He was slain by the hero Sigurd.
Pipirima is named for a pair of fraternal twins, the boy Pipiri and his sister Rehua, from a Tahitian legend. When their parents didnt share a meal of fish one night, the two kids ran away. As the parents came closer to finding them, the twins climbed onto the back of a passing stag beetle and were carried into the sky.

Chalawan, a villainous crocodile king from a Thai folktale, lived in an underwater cave. A man named Krai Thong fell in love with one of Chalawans two wives and killed the crocodile king.
Ran, a Norse goddess of the sea, created peril by capturing sailors in her net.

In stories from Australias aboriginal people, Unurgunite has two wives, which are represented by stars on either side of the named star. Whe...
Most Americans recently polled reportedly seem to hold favorable opinions about Americas corporations.1 If true, it means that most Americans dont know what I know and what they need to know. Trained as an organizational psychologist much of my research and consultative work during my career were for government agencies at the local, state and federal level. But I also have studied exhaustively the corporate side of organized life and have written more about it than the government side.2 My overall conclusion, not opinion, regarding all large organizations, especially large corporations, is that when they are unmasked their leadership is found to be morally depraved, and their organizations dysfunctional. I frame this overall conclusion about corporate America as an overarching simple truth that subsumes many other simple truths.
A Moral and Functional Framework for the Simple Truths
The primary intent of this article is to unmask corporate America by telling you about those simple truths. Even simple truths need an explanation, otherwise their full meaning and validity may be missed, and the massive and relentless lies may remain unchallenged. So, I want to tell you what they mean in the case of large, publicly traded corporations, at least to me.
Many decades ago I learned what morality really meant from a brilliant lawyer turned ethicist, believe it or not. He had studied all cultures throughout time and identified what he called the ten universal values: accountability, caring for and respecting others, commitment to excellence, fairness, honesty, integrity, justice, loyalty, promise keeping, and responsibility....

Here is the president of the United States of Americas official statement on his former chief advisor:
Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating seventeen candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party. Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isnt as easy as I make it look.
Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. Yet Steve had everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans. Steve doesnt represent my base-hes only in it for himself.
Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was. It is the only thing he does well.
Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books. We have many great Republican members of the Make America Great Again agenda. Like me, they love the United States of America and are helping to finally take our country back and build it up, rather than simply seeking to burn it all down.
What the president did not say:
1. that Bannon had blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming
out of his wherever.
2. that Bannon was bleeding badly from a face-lift.
3. that Bannon was wrong when he said the chance that Don. Jr did not walk [the Russians he met with in Trump Tower] up to his fathers office on the 26th floor is zero.
4. that Bannon was wrong when he said that the campaign should have called the FBI rather than hold a meeting with Kremlin-connected Russians peddling illegally obtained dirt on Hillary Clinton.
5. that Bannon was wrong when he said that holding the meeting was treasonous.
6. that Bannon was wrong when he said that holding the meeting was unpatriotic.
7. that Bannon was wrong when he said that holding the meeting was bad shit.
8. that Bannon was wrong when he mocked the brain trust that decided to meet with the Russians with no lawyers present.
9. that Bannon was a coffee boy.
I dont know how well the president will do in deflecting these criticisms with this stupid press release but if this is the kind of criminal defense he and his family are hoping to offer, hes really going to wish he...
I dont expect any better from the New York Posts Page Six, but this is still remarkable:
The federal grand jury handing down indictments for special counsel Robert Mueller doesnt appear to include any supporters of President Donald Trump, according to one witness who recently testified before the panel.
Of the 20 jurors, 11 are African-Americans and two were wearing peace T-shirts, the witness said. There was only one white male in the room, and he was a prosecutor.
It reminds me of this, from October 22nd, 2008:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin apologized yesterday for implying that some parts of the country are more American than others, even as similar comments by two Republican congressmen were causing a backlash that threatened their chances for reelection.
In an interview on CNN, Palin said comments she made last week in North Carolina praising small towns as the real America and the pro-America areas of this great nation were not intended to suggest that other parts of the country are less patriotic or less American.
If thats the way it has come across, I apologize, she told CNNs Drew Griffin.
That might be the last time that Sarah Palin or the conservative movement apologized for anything, and it obviously wasnt sincere. In their view, the country is divided into whites, particularly white men, and everyone else. White men can serve on a grand jury but if anyone else serves on a grand jury then the proceedings lack legitimacy.
The obvious point here is to undermine the credibility of the investigation into the Trump campaigns dealings with the Russians. Not only is the FBI biased, but the grand jury pool is biased, too. They might as well....
When I was a kid, my parents watched the television program Lou Grant and sometimes they let me stay up and watch it, too. My favorite character on the show was Joe Rossi who was played by Robert Walden. There was something about Rossi that appealed to me, and I developed a fondness for the actor who portrayed him. Later on, when I was probably in my early teens, I watched the movie All the Presidents Men about the Watergate scandal and President Nixons downfall. I took a special interest in the character of Donald Segretti specifically because he was played by Robert Walden. Even to this day, I can picture his scenes with Dustin Hoffman (Carl Bernstein) in vivid detail, with his sweater and his coffee and his beautiful balcony view.
I actually felt some sympathy for Segretti, despite the nickel and dime ratf*cking he did for the Nixon campaign. That was partly the intent of the screenwriters but also a result of my inability to fully disassociate the role of Segretti from the role of Joe Rossi on Lou Grant. It was only later that I came to despise everything Segretti and his University of Southern California Trojan mafia stood for.
And what they stood for was dirty campaign tactics. Segretti, along with other USC undergrads that went on to serve Nixon like Press Secretary Ron Zeigler and chief of staff Bob Haldemans hatchet man Dwight Chapin, cut his teeth running student government campaigns. In the movie, Segretti claims that what they did for Nixon was tame compared to what they did in college.
One thing Segretti did for Nixon was to steal Democratic presidential candidate Edmund Muskies letterhead and forge documents stating that Senator Henry Scoop Jackson had an illegitimate child with a 17-year-old and that Senator Hubert H. Humphrey had engaged in sexual misconduct. You can recognize his tactics in some of the things you see Roger Stone and James OKeefe engaged in today. More ominously, you can see a replay of the Trojan mafias efforts to achieve a conservative takeover of student government in Jane Mayers recent pie...
Benjamin Wittes is the editor in chief of Lawfare and a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution. Yesterday, he decided to revisit a piece he wrote back in May 2016 warning of what a prospective President Donald Trump might do to the administration of justice in this country. With the benefit of hindsight, he concludes that his forebodings could notunfortunatelyhave been more spot-on.
Wittes also produced a helpful list to demonstrate his prescience:
- He has demanded substantive outcomes from investigations.
- He has demanded investigations of political opponents.
- He has raged against the norms that prevent these wishes from being fulfilled.
- He has attackedpublicly and by namepeople who have acted honorably to defend those norms.
- He fired the redoubtable FBI director whom I flagged as an inconvenient bulwarkfor precisely the reason that James Comey was functioning as an inconvenient bulwark.
- He has harassed Comeys management team and demanded publicly their replacement.
- He has made the environment for those assistant U.S. attorneys committed to their jobs so uncomfortable that one literally sat in my office and told me that he was going to resign because I dont want to stand up in court any more and say, Im [his name] and I represent the United States.
- He has appointed an attorney general he specifically intended to protect him and go after his opponents.
Predictably, Wittes is scathing in his assessment of the presidents performance.
This is banana-republic-type stuff. One year into Trumps term in office, his character has not changed. The president of the United Statesas John Bellinger warned as early as December 2015 and as I elaborated on in March of 2016remains the principal threat in the world to the national security of the United States. His aspirations are as profoundly undemocratic and hostile to the institutions of democratic gove...

ACC sniffing out corruption in a wood pileNews National | 2018-01-04Page no: 3
THE Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating two cases of the illegal transit and corrupt trading in timber in Namibia.
Although the two matters are distinct from one another, ACC chief investigator Nelius Becker said the investigation of one stemming from the Zambezi region over the past year led to the discovery of the other just last week at Walvis Bay.
Last Thursday, the ACC followed up on information circulating on social media of trucks having been seen at the Walvis Bay weighbridge transporting timber suspected of being the products of illegal logging. This led to the discovery of timber, a load of 121 mkula logs.
The mkula tree is a slow grower, and faces extinction because of indiscriminate logging. It has become sought-after, and is considered amongst the best hardwood in the world.
The ACC seized the cargo, and launched an investigation after discovering alleged forged transit documents. The wood was apparently loaded at Sesheke Hardwood Limited in Zambia, and was in transit through Namibia for the Zheijiang Wutong Tree Supply Chain Management Company Limited in China. It is believed the wood is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
On Monday, the ACC seized more of the timber in transit. The Zambian truck on which it was being transported was also impounded.
Becker said five Zambian trucks timber cargoes were seized, and will remain in Namibia until the investigation is finalised. He told The Namibian yesterday that he believed three of the consignments were illegal, and that a case under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act will be lodged as soon as next week.
He explained that when the transit permits were inspected, it was discovered that they may have been forged as certain parts of the certificates had the same serial numbers, with some details describing the consignments having been changed.
It also suggested that the treatment of the wood (required prior to export) was done in May last year, but the wood was only....

A previous attack by Boko Haram terrorists who burned down the homes of an entire village. (Photo: Reuters)
A teenage suicide bomber in Nigeria blew himself up in a mosque, killing his father among others who were praying at the time.
Reports of the death toll varied between five and 11 people in the explosion which the bomber set off during the 5 am service.
The attack occurred in Gamboru, a town in the Borno state in northeastern Nigeria located on the border with Cameroon.
It was not immediately known to which group the teenage attacker identified, but the attack had all the markings of the terror group Boko Haram, which is known for targeting crowded mosques and market places and using children to carry out their deeds.
Boko Haram (which literally means secular education is forbidden) opposes all groups including Muslims that do not adhere to their extreme beliefs.
Boko Haram is also believed to be behind the recent disappearance of 30 loggers in the same area. Local sources feared the loggers mostly men in their 20s had been kidnapped after they left Gamboru early Tuesday morning, January 2, to gather firewood and failed to return.
Last month, 30 soldiers disappeared after a raid on a military base in the same region, known to be a Boko Haram stronghold.

A year ago I was appointed to serve on the planning commission in my hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota. It's been an interesting year of getting to (kinda) know how things work under-the-hood in my city. Contrary to what some of you might think, being thought of (at least in some circles) as an influential urban thinker means very little here in my small town. Getting positive things done requires the same stuff here as everywhere else: time, relationships and endless meetings.
In the latter half of 2017, the school district came to our meeting and presented their plan for an upcoming bond referendum, including potential changes to each of the district's neighborhood schools. There is a lot to discuss there, but one thing that stood out was the district's passion for off street parking facilities. Their extensive slide deck showed their proposed amount of parking as well as the city's requirements. Sometimes they wanted more than we require, but sometimes we required more than they were asking for.
Anticipating some detailed discussion on this in the coming months, I felt it was important to sideline the city's parking mandate. I and some of my fellow commissioners did not want our code -- which is arbitrary and excessive like most parking requirements -- to set the floor for the conversation. After some discussion, we proposed an ordinance amendment to repeal that line item -- just the minimum for schools -- and forward that recommendation to the council.
As part of the conversation at the planning commission, I made a presentation in what is becoming my second language (powerpoint). I gave the same presentation this past Tuesday to the city council. I'm sharing it here so you can see how I'm approaching this conversation in my own community. It's a slow, difficult conversation that I hope picks up momentum in time.
When I make presentations like this, I don't want my points to be con...

The Israeli military said early Thursday that it had struck central terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza Strip after three rockets were fired at Israeli border communities a day earlier.
The statement added that the military will continue to employ all measures available to it below and above ground to thwart attempted attacks on Israeli citizens.
The unusual wording of the statement implies that the target of the attack was an attack tunnel. The assessment is reinforced by the fact that the Palestinians have not yet revealed the target of the Israeli strike.
We are prepared and ready for a variety of scenarios, and we will work to face every attempt to breach Israeli sovereignty, the military statement said.
On Wednesday, three rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli communities near the border. All the rockets exploded in open areas, causing no injuries or damage, the army said. In the first two cases, sirens did not sound, while a siren sounded for the third one.
The army also said on Wednesday morning that Islamic Jihad was behind a rocket attack on Friday, in which militants in Gaza fired a rocket toward Israel that disrupted a ceremony for a fallen IDF soldier.
The Israel Air Force hit a Hamas military compound in the Strip early Tuesday morning. The rocket was in retaliation to an earlier rocket fired from Gaza, which struck an open area in southern Israel on Monday. There were no casualties or damage in the incident.

We said in the last article that since everything is based on energy, there were two factors needed to remove in order to decrease the chances that they manifest in the physical plane the military and geopolitical those governing the system of human control intentions. So, stop being batteries for the system and eliminate the distribution networks of this energy. Most of these plans, still in the making mental and etheric level, have been delayed, not canceled, and diminished in potential.
Everything happens for a reason, and when it is perceived that at least a part of the human race takes the reins and action to implement something that goes against your highest good, others listen, and others get involved and help because action is by, albeit tiny part of humanity, to want to reverse, get out, and remove something that is, obviously, a huge network of understanding complicated and confusing as few for those who are inside.
This makes these two previous actions, thousands of people who have been executed, has earned some time, and that gives us room to continue running other things that hopefully give us even longer, and thus more likely to reverse the current path line 33 ahead.
As we said, the line 33 remains as an evolutionary school needed to be the prelude to the line 42 , and therefore, can not and should not suffer greater damage than those that the same human race, without manipulation, could reach cocreate therein. That means it would be a line, a reality where things will go, or would go, like humans connected to it want...

The pardon allows the autocrat to walk free after twelve years in jail. He was convicted for having command responsibility in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres, in 1991 and 1992, and he was also sentenced on charges of corruption, robbery and aggravated kidnapping. Kuczynski accelerated the pardon in order to avoid being deposed by the Fujimorista majority in Congress. The deal sparked protests by the anti-Fujimorista camp: every day since Christmas Eve, they are staging marches in Lima and in a third of the regions in the country.
The former banker and current president of Peru has spent a year and a half under the pressure and facing the parliamentary obstruction of Peoples Force, the party led by Keiko Fujimori, his rival at the 2016 elections. Five of his ministers have been questioned or censored, and finally dismissed or forced to resign.
During the presidential campaign, Kuczynski promised not to pardon the convict, but he justified his change of mind, on the night of...
In this piece for the Feminist Current, Tove Happonen argues that the therapy model pathologizes womens responses to systemic injustice, aiming to change their emotional reactions to oppression rather than addressing patriarchy itself.
Therapy opposes collective feminist action both by determining some of us are unfit to support other women if we dont have degrees, and also by claiming we are unfit mentally in need of therapy ourselves. It places the burden of overcoming the effects of patriarchy, along with the blame for it, onto us as individuals. I myself was often told by therapists, when I expressed how powerless I felt in terms of my ability to improve the situation of women in our society, that I could not focus on trying to save the world until I first saved myself. I was in too fragile a mental state to make any difference, they said. I couldnt be an activist without damaging myself in the process. Just as our foremothers were labelled hysterical, we are taught that we are too mentally unwell or unstable to be effective activists. We learn that we suffer from things like social anxiety, depression, various phobias, bipolarity, and trauma that we need to personally overcome and heal from, through professional help, before we can focus on organizing and changing anything beyond ourselves.
From Science Magazine: A new study suggests that wisdomspecifically, the ability to take the perspectives of others into account and aim for compromisecomes much more naturally to those who grow up poor or working class.
The findings make sense, Jayawickreme says, as people who grow up in a working-class environment have to rely on shared, communal resources more than people in the middle class, and therefore hone social techniques that smooth out conflicts with their peers. Those in the middle class, in contrast, tend to focus on education, which improves their IQ scores, but they dont put nearly as much effort into conflict resolution skills, Grossmann says.

Various countries all over the world aim to regulate cryptocurrencies. That is much easier said than done, though. After all, cryptocurrencies cant be controlled by default. In South Korea, the government has taken a slightly different approach. Their form of cryptocurrency trading regulation doesnt sit too well with the general public. In fact, a Seoul-based law firm has filed an appeal regarding this matter.
It is evident the regulation of cryptocurrency trading is a very sensitive subject. It may seem the best course of actions for most governments all over the world, though. Since cryptocurrencies cant be controlled, the exchanges facilitating services certainly can. However, things will not go over so smoothly in South Korea. Anguk Law Offices filed an official appeal to fight this trading regulation. In fact, they claim the government conducted unconstitutional infringement on property rights. A very serious accusation that will not be easy to pursue whatsoever.
According to the law firm, there is no legal ground to regulate cryptocurrency trading. A very interesting way to put things, to say the very least. While no one denies regulation can be a good thing, there are no official related laws in place just yet. The Korean government is asked to respect the property rights of its citizens. Again, very firm language that leaves little to the imagination. The big question is whether or not the government will even pay attention to this appeal. It would certainly set an interesting precedent in the world of cryptocurrencies.
It is true the idea of regulating cryptocurrency trading is frowned upon all over the world. Forcing exchanges to conduct more thorough KYC and AML checks is not uncommon, though. However, limiting the way people can conduct these trades is something that doesnt sit well. After all, people should still be given minimal access to these services without verifying their identity. Even if it is just for small amounts, theres no reason to exclude these users whatsoever. How all of this will play out, remains to be determined, though.
Whether or not the South Korean government will...

Street surveillance, sometimes called street checks or carding, are a common practice for police in Edmonton, Alberta. It was recently revealed in The Star that those same police have been handing over data harvested from street surveillance to intelligence authoritieswho have then, in turn, constructed profiles on entire communities without any specific allegation of criminal behaviour.
Much to my frustration, there is a substantial portion of Canadian progressives who stop paying attention after the ballot box. The Liberals arent the same as the Conservatives, but they dont differ in a number of critical areasincluding surveillance, the tool that arguably threatens grassroots organizing the most.
Cell phone video of an Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers interaction with a group of young black men at a south side gym last month offered a rare close-up look at the controversial practice of carding or street checks, as the police prefer to call it and raises troubling questions about whether EPS is violating citizens Charter rights even as both the Edmonton Police Commission and the provincial justice department is reviewing the practice.
On the video, an officer can be seen engaging with a group of young men who are waiting around for a manager to give them a refund. The officer demands the men produce identification and when they question why, they are all threatened with arrest. When one of the young men says he doesnt feel comfortable giving the officer his identification, the officer responds (at 3:07 of the video clip), You dont feel comfortable? How about I tell you right now that youre under arrest for obstruction? Turn around and put your hands behind your back.
The incident which arose out of a now-resolved commercial dispute between a business and customers (neither of which wished to be quoted on the record for this story) resulted in no arrests. No complaint that a crime had been committed was ever filed.
While there are some occasions when an individual is required by law to provide identification, she said, It does not appear that the individuals depicted in the video would be required to do so as there is no lawful basis for an arrest and minimal prior investigation to justify them as being legitimate suspects.
We asked the Edmonton Police Service if they felt the officer acted appropriately. Based upon the information provided by both parties and a review of the incident, the EPS believes the officers actions were appropriate, responded EPS communications advisor C...
New Delhi: The demolition of illegal constructions by the Myanmar Army on the no mans land along the India-Myanmar border led to some tension in Manipurs Tengnoupal district last week.

WASHINGTON Verizon users experienced a sudden and painful throttling of their Internet speed while playing Overwatch, specifically against FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.
Frustrated gamers initially took to Reddit to discuss the issue before slowly beginning to piece together their theory that Pai implemented the throttling to give himself an unfair advantage.
My team needed just 5 more seconds in a captured location to win, said Redditor Jen Allen. Next thing I know my internet starts lagging like a mother, Doomfist is dead, and we lost the match. It made no sense.

As more and more gamers came forward, several began to notice unusual similarities in each of the matches.
A couple of us Reddit sleuths in r/Overwatch figured out that every player who experienced the throttling had two things in common, said Redditor Glen Klentak. They were all Verizon internet users, and the throttling only occured in matches featuring a player named Ajit_Pai_69. That cant be a coincidence.
Several hours and hundreds of comments later, a mysterious Redditor claiming to work for the FCC confirmed that Ajit_Pai_69 is Ajit Pai. The source explained that Pai promised Verizon he would repeal Net Neutrality in exchange for the ability to throttle internet speeds of his online opponents at will.
The source, who deleted their Reddit account the next day, also explained Pais ultimate motivation.

French President Emmanuel Macron is trying to advance a new kind of "offensive multilateralism." But unless the European Union as a whole embraces the cause, Europe risks becoming a casualty of Chinas efforts to bend the multilateral system to its own will or, worse, Trumps efforts to dismantle it altogether.

As a budding student of computer science, theres a disconnect between what you learn in class and what you see in the real world. You learn all there is to know about loops of every varietyfor, while, do while. You can write a command line based tic-tac-toe game like its nobodys business. And you write so much fill-in-the-blank x86 assembly that it makes your head spin.
But sometimes it feels as if everyone knows what theyre doing and you do not. You havent the slightest clue how something like Facebook works. Or Reddit. Or YouTube. You dont even have an inkling of where to begin. When you Google companies that use python, since Python is the only language you know, you find people saying things like Reddituses python for their backend. Backend? What does that even mean?
Theres this giant gap in your knowledge between writing tic-tac-toe for the command line and building a real application, and nobody is telling you how to fill it in. Even though youve learned all about how to think logically, you have no idea how to apply what youve learned in order to build the things you want to build.
Heres the thing: it takes initiative to get to where you want to be. You wont always have professors giving you templates and boilerplate for all your projects, leaving you to fill in the blanks. You wont always have a lesson plan telling you This is what you need to learn next.
Nobody has more influence over your personal development than you. Its up to you to decide what you want to learn, without someone spoon-feeding you the next step every step of the way. This self-directed learning, what Dan Luu might describe as a meta-skill, is one of the most important skills youll pick up in your journey towards becoming a software developer.
Luckily, these days we have Google to help out. How to build a website using python, you search. You stumble across this nifty little web framework and decide to give it a shotnot that you actually know what a framework is. You try reading the documentation from the beginning, dont understand any of it (database abstraction layer?), and skip ahead to the installation step.
Finally, some actionable steps to follow! You copy the commands into your terminal. Theres something about something called pip, and virtualenv, whatever those are...
An emerging black-market gun-making industry lets buyers bypass background checks and gun regulations, authorities say

Axel Galvez had a deal: $7,500 for five untraceable semiautomatic rifles. And he had a buyer: a felon who planned to ship them overseas. Now, he just needed weapons that would be invisible to regulators.
To avoid background checks, Mr. Galvez bought rifle parts, then assembled the five guns at the Los Angeles machine shop where he worked. He offered to build his buyer 100 more for $130,000.

Cryptocurrencies may be bringing us closer to a world of singularity and the Matrix more than we can imagine. One experiment designed by Manuel Beltrn aims to bring humans closer to this world by using human-powered energy to mine digital assets. The Dutch-based research and development team called the Institute of Human Obsolescence led by Beltrn is mining cryptocurrencies with a special bodysuit that harvests human body heat into a sustainable energy source.
Manuel Beltrn, the founder of the Institute of Human Obsolescence (IoHO), is challenging the idea that technology cannot be sustained by our current resources, because he believes one supply the human body is very abundant. The institute has been running various operations that consist of researching and developing biological labor, with the current project tethered to mining cryptocurrencies. The most recent tests comprised of roughly 212 hours between many shifts and 37 workers participated in the experiment.
