Indonesian ex-soldier among three jailed for illegal trade in Sumatran rhino, tiger parts "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

MEDAN, Indonesia A court in Indonesia has sentenced three men, including a former soldier, to two years in jail for illegally trading in body parts from a critically endangered Sumatran rhino and tiger. The verdicts were handed down in separate cases at the Medan District Court on Jan. 4 and 8. In the latter ruling, the court found Suharto, a former captain in the Army Special Forces, or Kopassus, guilty of possession of a horn from a Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) a species on the brink of extinction, with possibly fewer than 30 individuals left in the wild. Herman, a middleman to whom Suharto tried to sell the contraband, was also found guilty. (The defendants, like many Indonesians, go by just one name.) The pair were also fined 100 million rupiah ($7,000) each. The Medan District Court hand down two-year sentences and fines of $7,000 each to Suharto and Herman for attempting to trade a Sumatran rhino horn. Photo by Ayat S. Karokaro/Mongabay-Indonesia. The two men were arrested in August last year in a sting carried out by local authorities. The horn seized in the operation was found to have been partially carved into an ornamental globe, measuring 15 centimeters (6 inches) in height and more than twice that in circumference at the base. It weighed an estimated 400 grams (14 ounces). Suharto claimed to have obtained the horn from an acquaintance as collateral for a loan of just $150 a steep discount on the estimated street

Lana Del Rey says Radiohead suing her for copying Creep "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

OK, this seems really clearcut to me, but judge for yourself.

My take: The chord structure seems identical, the production not so much. But theres this one moment that really makes the case for me.

  • In the Radiohead video, jump to about 39 seconds in and listen to the phrase, float like a feather, with that bit of vocalization at the end of the word feather.

  • Now, in the Lana Del Rey video, jump to about 50 seconds in and listen to the phrase my modern manifesto. To me, I hear the same vocalization at the end of the word manifesto.

As I said, judge for yourself. But hard for me to believe Creep wasnt an influence here.

Apple Watch to be able to control Whirlpool appliances this year "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Whirlpool has said Apple Watch wearers will soon be able to remotely control their home appliances.

It would mean smart watch owners could change temperature settings on ovens, delay cycles on washers or check how long is left to run on a dryer.

When I first saw this, I compared it to the ability to use my Apple Watch to quickly bring up my profile/setup on a piece of gym equipment. This takes advantage of the security/identity features of the Apple Watch.

But thinking a bit more, I can see the value in using my Apple Watch to control an appliance. With an oven, you could tap a recipe, have the oven preheat to the right temperature without having to look it up. And checking the time remaining on a washer/dryer cycle, also useful.

Things like this make me realize just how much the Apple Watch is still in its infancy.

What the rise of cyber indictments means for 2018 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The growing implementation of indictments throughout 2017 was arguably the most impactful government action to counter cyber attacks, and yet received little attention. Sydney is absolutely booming "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Sydney booms

Wow, even more stunning jobs vacancies figures for New South Wales topping 81,500 for the latest quarter!

To put that in perspective before this cycle no state had ever topping 60,000, although there was a bit of a gap in the ABS survey in 2008-9.

Sydney may be set for a record low unemployment rate this year on this evidence, so it's no wonder it is the premier city of choice for immigrants.

Jobs vacancies have exploded 17 per cent higher to 210,800, easily the highest level on record.

And the number of unemployed persons per vacancy has declined to the lowest level in years, so finding a job is getting easier.

Why is this important? Because it suggests that Australia is returning to full employment.

Sophia the Citizen Robot Is Learning to Walk

Sophia, the famous humanoid robot which had been ridiculed since getting the Saudi Arabian citizenship has now another update to sweep everyone off their feet.

Sophia took her first few steps. It is a big revolution in the domain of AI and robotics.

And of course, this happened in CES 2018, the annual Tech Trade show happening this year in Las Vegas.

A Hong Kong based company, Hanson robotics, founded by David Hanson announced its partnership with Rainbow Robotics and Drones and Autonomous Systems Lab at the same event to help Sophia become a fully-fledged humanoid by integrating with DRC-HUBO body which possseses mechanical legs and ability to walk like a human. In 2015, this DRC-HUBO body has won the DARPA Robotics Challenge.

Dr. Ben Goertzel, Chief scientist of Hanson Robotics said in a statement, Giving Sophia a more complete and robust embodiment is a key part of our ongoing, rapidly accelerating quest to supply her and our other Hanson robots with general intelligence at the human level and ultimately beyond.

In March 2016, Sophia was first showcased at South by Southwest by Hanson. He says, Integrating Sophia with a (robotics) body that can allow her to walk completes her physical form, so she can access the full range of human experiences, which will help her learn to live and walk among us.

Tajikistan: Brain Drain Rush Causes Annual Riot "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Such was the crowd of people in Tajikistans capital that turned up this week to apply for permission to move to Russia from the local representative office of the Russian Interior Ministry that police officers had to be summoned.

The scenes of chaos starkly underlined the pervasive sense of hopelessness in Tajikistans long-term economic prospects and how ever more people aspire to move abroad.

Eyewitnesses reported that around 2,500 people arrived on January 9 to submit documents on the first day of work this year at the offices of Russias National Program for Supporting Voluntary Migration of the Compatriots Residing Abroad. The program is open to people born in the Soviet Union and to ethnic Russians. Applicants with higher qualifications doctors, engineers and other similarly qualified specialists are typically given priority.

The scramble occurred on the first day of work at the Russian Interior Ministry branch after the New Year holidays and as the applications are processed on a first come, first served basis, aspirant Russian citizens are desperate to get their names as high up as possible on the waiting lists.

RFE/RLs Tajik service, Radio Ozodi, cited a representative with the Russian Interior Ministry, Galina Aleksandrova, as saying that they were forced to call police when the situation got out of their control.

Police dispersed the aggressively disposed crowd. We have no information about anybody being injured, she said.

The Russian Embassy has said that as a result of the high demand to take part in the migration program, applications are now only being accepted by phone.

South Koreas Moon says Trump deserves big credit for North Korea talks Our task going forward is to draw North Korea to talks aimed at the denuclearization of the North "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Christine KimSoyoung Kim

SEOUL (Reuters) South Korean President Moon Jae-in credited U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday for helping to spark the first inter-Korean talks in more than two years, and warned that Pyongyang would face stronger sanctions if provocations continued.

The talks were held on Tuesday on the South Korean side of the demilitarized zone, which has divided the two Koreas since 1953, after a prolonged period of tension on the Korean peninsula over the Norths missile and nuclear programs.North Korea ramped up its missile launches last year and also conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test, resulting in some of the strongest international sanctions yet.

The latest sanctions sought to drastically cut the Norths access to refined petroleum imports and earnings from workers abroad. Pyongyang called the steps an act of war.

Seoul and Pyongyang agreed at Tuesdays talks, the first since December 2015, to resolve all problems between them through dialogue and also to revive military consultations so that accidental conflict could be averted.

I think President Trump deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks, I want to show my gratitude, Moon told reporters at his New Years news conference. It could be a resulting work of the U.S.-led sanctions and pressure.

New Caledonia: Socit Le Nickel Mine Sabotaged "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

translated by Earth First! Journal

A creek in southern New Caledonia contaminated by the nickel mine.

The important mining site of the Socit Le Nickel (Eramet group) in New Caledonia has been the target of many sabotages during the holiday season, according to the company on Friday [January 5].

The facts occurred between December 25 and January 3 on the infrastructure of four mining centers of the SLN within the municipality of Thio, on the east coast of Grande-Terre. Whats happening in Thio is quite serious, there are gangs of thugs, who challenge themselves and commit more and more frequent abuses, said Olivier Bligon, director of communications at SLN.

In an internal memo that AFP had a copy of, the management said that a dozen cars were stolen, burned or damaged. It is also said that the curtain of a workshop was smashed, the cafeteria was vandalized and looted, and a truck had its lift arm damaged. As the first private employer in the Caillou, SLN, a subsidiary of the French group Eramet, strongly condemned these acts of sabotage, a precise assessment of which is underway.

In this mining village, the center of deadly clashes between Kanak independence and Caldoist loyalists in the early 1980s, the mining company, which employs 180 people, is regularly targeted by acts of vandalism. The i...

The Sgnl wristband would let Humans receive phone calls through hands "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Sgnl wristband lets you make calls using a finger

Worlds first BCU (Body Conduction Unit) would now make it possible to receive phone calls through your hands. The technology is yet to be released this year post March and is going to bring revolution in the domain of wearable technology.

The product is derivative of Samsungs C-Lab. Both of these devices with other similar spin-offs are currently being showcased in Las Vegas at CES 2018. People at the CES event who got a chance to use the device were able to listen to music by placing their fingertip near their ear while wearing the Sgnl device on the wrist of that fingertip. Although, the main motive of the device is not listening to music but to have a phone conversation.

The Sgnl works in few steps. It transmits vibrations from the users wrist to their fingertips via their bones. Yes, it transmits through bones. And when the fingertip is placed next to ear converts into sound which can be heard via the user and a phone call happens successfully. One advantage of this is that no one except the user will be able to hear the vibrations and the phone calls can be received safely. It means there wont be any need to take out mobile phones from the pocket.

The Sgnl technology not only can make calls but do other important stuff as well. It can also work as pedometer, sleep monitor, fitness tracker and has many apps which can be integrated with it. Sgnls strap can be affixed with any traditional watch or wrist band.

It can store up to five contacts through which phone calls can made using the basic Sgnls interface. Although, later its assumed to get updated and store more than five contacts. It also means until that happens, user will have to take out phone for phones calls other than those five.

This device is compatible with both Android as well as iOS and is water resistant. It posses a battery life of four hours of call time and up to four days in the standby mode.

Right now, its in nascent stage but we all are excited for this new technology and waiting for its release.

WiFi Alliance Announces Upcoming Fixes to WPA2 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Last October, before Intels Management Engine was completely broken and the Spectre and Meltdown exploits drove Intels security profile further into the ground, we had a problem with wireless networking. WPA2 was cracked with KRACK, the Key Reinstallation Attack. The sky isnt falling quite yet, but the fact remains that the best WiFi security currently available isnt very secure at all.

This week, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the WiFi Alliance announced they would introduce security enhancements in 2018. While its not said in the press release if this is a reaction to KRACK, the smart money says yes, this is indeed a reaction to KRACK.

Four new capabilities are outlined in the upcoming release of WPA3 this year. One feature will be protection for users who do not choose complex passwords. A second feature will simplify the process of configuring security on devices that have no display, ostensibly like that little button on your router that youve never pressed. The third feature will strengthen user privacy in open networks, while the fourth, the one we really care about, will add a 192-bit security suite which will, further protect WiFi networks with higher security requirements.

While most devices currently in service should have a patch for KRACK by now, there will always be thousands of unpatched devices, because, really, who is in charge of the router at your local coffee shop? Were not sure about the timing of the WiFi Alliances announcement of upcoming security improvements: coming during CES when the entirety of the tech press is gawking at manned quadcopters and an endless variety of voice assistants. But we have to say better late than never.

After terror attack, Israeli army imposes partial lockdown on West Bank city, villages
Israel set to approve hundreds of new settlement homes in West Bank

Israeli cabinet ministers called Wednesday for the legalization of an illegal West Bank outpost after one of its residents was murdered in a terror attack.

On Wednesday morning, Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot visited the Havat Gilad outpost where Rabbi Raziel Shevach, 35, a father of six, had been shot to death the night before, hit by bullets fired from a car driving along the West Banks main route.

Eisenkot was briefed on the attack and ensuing actions by army and Shin Bet security service forces. The actions included a curfew and partial lockdown on Nablus and Palestinian villages in the area amid the efforts to find the shooter or shooters.

PNG Defence Force ready to evacuate Schouten Islanders "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The PNG Acting Government Chief Secretary, Frank Aisi, says the PNG Defence Force's naval element is already on the Schouten Islands, to assist evacuate the Kadovar islanders from the Ruprup Island to Turubu on the Wewak mainland.

Mr Aisi also says a K15,000 relief funding is being mobilized in consultation with the East Sepik Governor, Allan Bird, to purchase immediate supplies for the people.

Scientists at the Rabaul Volcano Observatory, say the spewing of smoke and ash on Friday, has covered the entire island, making it unfit for occupation.

Volcanologists also say while Friday's eruption was only a discharge of old material from the volcano, it could be disastrous if the magma reaches the surface.

The volcano observatory also says Kadovar islanders may not be able to return to their island in a long while.

Mr Aisi says, prime minister Peter O'Neill has directed relevant disaster and emergency organizations to work together help and resource the islanders from the disaster.

"So that's what the prime minister has done. He's also directed all relevant agencies work closely with the National Disaster Office and East Sepik Provincial Government and other agencies to ensure the islanders are safely evacuated to safer grounds.

"The Defence Force is already there, to assist with logistical requirements.

"The Rabaul Volcano Observatory is also being instructed to monitor the situation on the island as well as on nearby islands.

"We already secured the funding and we need to procure the goods from services providers in Wewak town.

We will arrange funding to Papindo in Wewak to purchase fresh water and food which are the immediate requirements."

Frank Aisi is the Deputy Secretary Policy 1, responsible for Economic, Infrastructure and International Relations with the Department of the Prime Minister and National Executive Council.

He's currently the acting government chief secretary in the absence of Isaac Lupari.

Mr Aisi says government agencies responsible for disaster warnings and emergencies should be grouped together in order to respond effectively to events in the country.

The vital disaster warning and emergency agencies are the Rabaul Volcano Observatory which comes under the Geohazards Division, located within the Department of Mining,...

German AfD hardens radical, anti-Muslim course railing against barbaric, Muslim, gang-raping hordes "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

AFP/File / by Frank ZELLER | Von Storch started 2018 by attacking police in Cologne for tweeting in Arabic.

The Alternative for Germany party started the year by railing against barbaric, Muslim, gang-raping hordes, ending months of relative post-election calm and any remaining doubt about its hardening far-right course.

If the AfD had been at pains to portray itself as a patriotic conservative force after the September 24 polls, the latest slur signalled that an extremist faction is winning the battle for control, say political scientists.

The radical course has been cemented, said Hajo Funke of Berlins Free University, adding that the AfD was now openly reaching out to the right-wing extremist fringe, including neo-Nazis and white-pride Identitarians.

Funke said the former anti-euro party had steadily radicalised, purged its more moderate figures, built bridges to groups such as the anti-Islam Pegida street movement, and had never publicly expelled a far-right member.

While the AfDs declared enemy, Chancellor Angela Merkel, has been struggling to form a new government with the Social Democrats, the AfD has barely been out of the headlines in recent weeks.

In a familiar pattern, its provocations have been followed by vague apologies but also complaints about political correctness and censorship by a liberal media and political thought police.

Meanwhile, long-unthinkable content has appeared on social media despite tough new rules against online hate speech.

Days ago, said Funke and news reports, an AfD local politician in Berlins multicultural Neukoelln district, Franziska Lorenz-Hoffmann, briefly posted a Nazi-era propaganda poster on Facebook that warned the German woman to keep your blood pure.

Groping migrant mobs

AfD deputy leader Beatrix von Storch started 2018 by attacking police in the western city of Cologne for tweeting in Arabic, as well as in German, English and French, on New Years Eve.

What the hell is going on with this country? she wrote. Did you mean to placate the barbaric, Muslim, gang-raping hordes of men?

The comment pointed to mass sexual assaults there in 2016 by mostly North African men whom the far-right labelled rapefugees.

No extra fees for Madang schools "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

All Government run schools in the Madang Province are not allowed to charge any school or project fees this year.

Provincial Education Director Moses Sariki, says, this is because they do not have a Provincial Education Act that allows schools to charge fees for all TVET, elementary, primary, high and secondary schools in the province.

Mr Sariki says, because Madang does not have such a law unlike provinces like East New Britain, they will have to go by the Education Secretarys circular of 2016, which prohibits school fees and other related fees.

He however explains that while schools are still allowed to collect extra money, it has to be done with the approval of the provincial education board, and must be accompanied by proper documentation of projects that the schools want to implement.

Mr Sariki also emphasized that school administrations and boards must not make decisions in isolation from parents but must always seek their approval through the Parents and Citizens Association meetings.

This means if parents agree, schools can then ask the PEB to allow them to collect what he terms as "parental contributions" for special school needs.

Speaking to the media in Port Moresby, Governor Ipatas described the Royal PNG Constabulary as a 'liability' and that external help is needed immediately.

"We already have an understanding.

"The Australian government was already willing to fund it.

"So I am saying with the difficult economic conditions I don't think we have the resource to bring in 200 to 300 policemen and women.

"My suggest is that all this 200-300 policemen and women are deployed right throughout the country.

Not in Moresby only, not in Lae only, so that the bad type of attitudes that is creeping up in society, and for young people, we need to manage them.

"A policeman who is well trained, will be engaged properly with offenders, will be able to get the society to understand rights and wrongs.

Britons expect war, terrorism and political upheaval in 2018 but still think that things can only get better! "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Comment: Behind the Headlines: Trump Wags the Iran Riot Dog, Kim Talks Korean Peace Polling by Ipsos MORI revealed that Britons were most likely people to think that a major terrorist attack in their country is likely - with two thirds of us thinking the country will be hit by terror. Elsewhere, two in five (39 per cent) of us think that a USA-North Korea war is likely, while another two in five (43 per cent) think that President Trump will be impeached this year. Comment: Meanwhile the UK conservative government only just managed to slither into power by making dodgy deals with a highly questionable party based in Northern Ireland, most of the voting public had never even heard of, and since forming the coalition have been plagued by scandals and infighting. But it's Trump whose future looks bleak! But despite all of these concerns, two thirds of us still say we are optimistic that 2018 will be a better year for us personally.

Modern Monetary Theory and Strong Towns "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Last year I read Debt: The First 5,000 Years by David Graeber. I found it compelling and included it in an article I wrote about Puerto Rico (The Spooky Nature of Debt), mentioned it in a podcast and included it in the list of books I published in December. Apparently, this was a signal to many of you that I am, or at the very least might be, interested in a strain of economic thinking called Modern Monetary Theory.

The reality is that Im a deep skeptic of the theory. In fact, I think we should all be reflexively skeptical of any theory that purports to remove burdensome economic constraints and make our lives instantly easier if only society can find the required cultural enlightenment. If you discover a magic pill that is said to solve some complex and ancient problem human societies continually struggle with, you might want to pause before taking it.

My skepticism aside, my goal here is not to convince the passionate supporters of endless federal money printing that this is a bad idea youve got your thing and you really believe it and I dont want to quarrel over it in this piece but to point out to you, and especially those sympathetic to the ends if not the means of what you advocate for, that Modern Monetary Theory is not going to solve the problems we are trying to address at Strong Towns.

Like any theory being examined in the framework of politics, economics and society, there is a lot of nuance and varying interpretations. That being said, I think the point of greatest divergence (and popular appeal) of Modern Monetary Theory is described by a sympathetic (though skeptical) Paul Krugman in the opening of a piece he wrote in 2011:

Right now, deficits dont matter a point borne out by all the evidence. But theres a school of thought the modern monetary theory people who say that deficits never matter, as long as you have your own currency.

The base concept here is described in a recent article in Truthout, "But How Will We Pay for It?": Modern Monetary Theory and Democratic Socialism. From that piece:

Governments with their own currency and a floating exchange rate (sovereign currency issuers like the United States) do not have to borrow from "bond vigilantes" to spend. They themselves first spend the money into existence and then collect it through taxation to enforce its usage.....

2017 has been an such unusual year in so many ways that its unusuality has masked the ways in which it has been a very usual year, a very much more-of-the-same series of months. This piece continues our look at 2017 through the most significant pieces we've written last year.

Toyota, Mazda Choose Alabama for New $1.6 Billion Car Plant "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Auto makers plan to formally announce location on Wednesday

Updated Jan. 9, 2018 9:38 p.m. ET

Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. will build a new $1.6 billion assembly plant in Huntsville, Alabama, according to people familiar with the companies decision, a move that boosts their production capacity in the U.S. and adds to large and growing foreign auto maker presence in the southern state.

Toyota and Mazda first announced plans in August for the new plant, which will create 4,000 jobs and make up to 300,000 vehicles a year by 2021. Toyota has said it would build 150,000 Corolla models and Mazda will use the rest of the capacity for an unspecified model.

Alabama is home to three other vehicle assembly plants operated by foreign auto makers: Daimler AGs Mercedes-Benz unit, Honda Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. In September, Daimler said it would invest $1 billion at its Alabama facilities on top of the $5.8 billion it has spent in the state since it began vehicle production there in 1997.

The selection of Huntsville comes a year after Toyota was criticized by U.S. President Donald Trump for plans to build a new plant in Mexico. The Japanese company announced plans within days of that to spend $10 billion in the U.S. over the next five years.

The two companies plan to formally announce the location, which had not previously been disclosed, at a press conference Wednesday in Montgomery, the state capital, the people familiar with their decision said.

Reuters earlier reported news of the location of the factory.

Toyota, the worlds largest auto maker, already has a major manufacturing presence in the Midwest and South with factories in Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas. The Alabama plant would be its fifth assembly plant in the U.S. For Mazda, the plants opening would mark the first time it is building cars in the U.S. since it stopped manufacturing vehicle...

The two vowed to identify "ways in which NATO can strengthen its contribution to women's protection and participation in all aspects of conflict-prevention and resolution." The pairing of a NATO bureaucrat and a famous movie actress may at first glance appear odd. However, this partnership has been long in the making. Some years ago, NATO, always on the lookout for a reason to justify its continued existence, not to mention its perpetual expansion, came up with a new raison d'tre: It would be the global champion of women. "Achieving gender equality is our collective task. And NATO is doing its part," said Mari Skre, the NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, in 2013. In March 2016, on International Women's Day, NATO held a so-called "Barbershop Conference" on gender equality. Stoltenberg took the opportunity to declare that gender equality was a frightfully important issue for NATO because "NATO is a values-based organization and none of the Alliance's fundamental values-individual liberties, democracy, human rights and the rule of law-work without equality." Diversity was a source of strength. "We learned in Afghanistan and in the Balkans that by integrating gender within our operations, we make a tangible difference to the lives of women and children," Stoltenberg explained. He stressed that NATO is proud of its record in embedding gender perspectives within its work. Last November, Stoltenberg was at it again: "Empowering women is not just the right thing to do, it's the smart thing to do: it makes countries safer and more stable. NATO is determined to make a difference."

Ken Roth the US Deep State Destablization Outreach Agent "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

21st Century Wire says

Few organisations have underpinned the Western anti-Syrian government and Syrian Arab Army demonisation campaign as consistently as Human Rights Watch and its morally indignant Director, Ken Roth. Throughout the US coalition dirty war that has ravaged Syria for the last seven years, injecting a multitude of monstrous terrorist entities into Syrian territory, Roth has systematically sustained the faux-humanitarian propaganda.

HRW, Amnesty International and assorted Humanitarian offshoots are on a ceaseless crusade against the SAA use of barrel bombs.  Today, Ken Roth even compared the use of Barrel bombs to the destruction caused by the nuclear bomb used on Hiroshima whilst failing to mention that the Israeli bombardment of Gaza in 2014 can very credibly be compared to Hiroshima in its destructiveness and tonnage of explosive dropped on innocent civilians in the besieged & battered enclave. ~ Vanessa Beeley Syria Welcome to Hell

Macron said he had confirmation from Chinese President Xi Jinping that a contract would be finalized shortly for China to order 184 short-haul Airbus A320s.

French officials quoted by the French news agency AFP as Macron wrapped up his three-day visit accompanied by a large French business delegation said the 184 planes would be delivered to 13 airlines in 2019 and 2020.

At Airbus list prices for the single-aisle planes, the deal could be worth at least 15 billion ($18 billion).

Macron added that France and China also had ambitions for sales of Airbuss longer-range A350 and its large but hard-to-sell A380 in the weeks and months to come.

President Xi confirmed to me that China will maintain the volume of orders in the coming years and preserve parity with the market shares of Airbus and [US rival] Boeing, Macron said at a news conference.

US rival Boeing sold 300 jets last November during a visit by President Donald Trump as China splits orders to cope with airline traffic as middle-class aspirations grow.

China also placed a large order for 140 Airbus jets during a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Germany last July.

On Tuesday, Airbus, based in Toulouse, signed a provisional deal to increase the output of A320s at its China assembly plant in Tianjin from four to six planes per month by 2020.

The Hundred Trillion Stories in Your Head "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In this piece for The Paris Review, Benjamin Ehrlich discusses the role of the literary arts in shaping the work and ideas of Santagio Ramn y Cajal, the father of modern neuroscience.

The world of the infinitely small, like novels of his youth, seemed more real to Cajal than everyday existence. How else could he routinely spend up to fifteen hours a day, for almost fifty years, alone in the laboratory? He claimed to have observed a million neurons, witnessing them in every phase of their lives: birth, development, movement, relationships, adversity, trauma, decline, and death. On thumbnail sheets of dead brain tissue, the Spaniards cherished stories came to life. He imagined neurons as protagonists in an intense cerebral drama. Their fibers groped to find another. Their aching contacts became protoplasmic kissesthe final ecstasy of an epic love story.'

When the Cure is the Cause: The Case of the Green Hairy Tongue "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From Undark Magazine: In late 1970, a pharmacologist discovered that an antibiotic drug designed to cure a disease called SMON (subacute myelo-optic neuropathy) was actually causing the illness. This case exemplifies how medical treatment all too often makes matters worse.

Few doctors know the story of SMON, and perhaps even fewer use the catchphrase cure as cause. Yet the phenomenon is more relevant today than ever. A study published last year suggests that medical interventions, including problems with prescribed drugs and implanted medical devices from cardiac stents to artificial hips and birth control devices are now the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

Examples abound in virtually every specialty, from cardiology to psychiatry to cancer care. Jerome Hoffman, an emeritus professor of medicine at UCLA, says it isnt surprising: Because drugs and medical devices target disordered body systems, its all too easy to overshoot and make the disorder worse.

George RR Martin Under Fire After Speech in Front of Banner That Reads Series Accomplished "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

SANTA FE, N.M. A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin is being attacked online by fans after giving a speech under a large banner that read Series Accomplished, claiming that he had succeeded in completing his book series.

The series, which originally was planned as a trilogy but has now been promised as seven books, has released five novels so far, the last of which, A Dance with Dragons, came out in 2011. Martin has continuously pushed back the release date for his sixth book as he continues to write it, but this is the first instance of him claiming that the book series is actually complete.

In the early 1990s, I set out to write a series of novels called A Song of Ice and Fire, and today, we are here to celebrate the fact that the series is completed, he said, inexplicably to a large group of military officials on an aircraft carrier. Mission accomplished.

The announcement from Martin comes with no new information about the completion of the sixth ASOIAF book, titled The Winds of Winter, or even the announcement of a companion ASOIAF book, such as the Targaryen history book he had originally planned for 2018 titled Fire and Blood. Fans were confused to discover that Martin also did not announce a new Dunk and Egg book or even a newly edited Wild Cards novel.

Mandated free speech was supposed to be a joke "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The proponents of frozen peaches have seldom grappled with the irony of some of their proposed solutions, including a ban on no-platforming or refusing to invite someone to speak. By such a solution, the New York Times would need to be penalized for all the pitches Ive sent them that theyve never published. Its completely ridiculous. It is entirely ordinary for those who run platforms to schedule those platforms to the specifications of their own programs.

I didnt think anyone would be daft enough to attempt a no-platform ban, but I forget that I can count on Conservatives to pursue the worst ideas possible.

Still, if the Government is going to legislate, I hope politicians pay some attention to the ponderings of the parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights. The Committee is looking into the vexed topic of no-platforming in universities and, to my great surprise, I was recently invited to appear and give evidence.

It was a cheering experience. Absent were the soundbites of politicians in a hurry, like Conservative minister Jo Johnson. Instead, I found a willingness to listen and an appreciation that some things are complex. The idea that anyone was signed up to absolute free speech was, I argued, a myth. In fact almost everyone would like to ban someone or something, with right-wing banners well to the fore.

You dont believe me? Just attend your local Armistice Day celebrations next November wearing a white poppy and count the purple faces! The fact that everyone is against absolute free speech, though, was a relatively easy point to make, given that I was appearing just one week after UK parliamentarians had advocated the ultimate no-platform of the Big Sleaze himself, President Trump.

South Korea Tells Two Dozen Countries and the IMF to Regulate Cryptocurrency Trading "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

We have witnessed dozens of global attempts to regulate cryptocurrencies in recent years. None of these efforts have been positive whatsoever. South Korea now urges other countries, as well as the IMF, to curb cryptocurrency trading. An interesting stance, although it may turn out rather positive for the future of Bitcoin and altcoins. Whether any of the addressed parties will take action, is something else entirely.

In a way, curbing cryptocurrency trading is all governments can do right now. Rather than take Chinas lead, following South Korea may not be a bad idea. More specifically, the local financial regulator wants to prevent money laundering, terrorist funding, et cetera. Cross-border cyber transactions involving cryptocurrency have become rather problematic in South Korea over the past few months. It is unclear if any other region of the world has to deal with similar issues right now.

Regulating Cryptocurrency Trading Wont be Easy

An international coordination to regulate cryptocurrency trading will not be easy to achieve. Very few countries are actively concerned about this new form of money. The laissez-faire attitude reigns supreme in this regard. If countries were to work together, however,  interesting things could happen. It will be either beneficial or destructive for the cryptocurrency ecosystem. In this day and age, there is no middle path when it comes to governments, regulation, and cryptocurrency.

With South Korea attempting to initiate discussions, a big first step has been taken. Addressing the way people can buy and exchange cryptocurrency seems to be the top priority. No country can afford to ignore this new form of money any longer. Preventing speculative transactions is another important aspect to keep in mind. Right now, all cryptocurrencies are mainly valued based on hype and speculation. It creates very volatile markets where money can be earned and lost very quickly.

Although it is commendable to tap the IMF in this regard, that institution most likely wont intervene. More specifically, th...

Ethics Board Fines Cook County Assessor Over Campaign Contributions "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios is facing $41,000 in fines for failing to return campaign contributions from property tax appeals lawyers whose donations exceeded legal limits, according to a pair of new rulings by the county ethics board.

The rulings raise the level of scrutiny on campaign contributions given by appeals lawyers to Berrios, who doubles as chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party and depends heavily on their donations in raising political funds. The action also ignites another high-profile showdown with the county Board of Ethics, with which he previously clashed over nepotism issues.

At the center of the ethics boards rulings is a 2016 county ordinance stating that donors who seek official action with the county may contribute no more than $750 in nonelection years. Attorneys for Berrios are seeking to overturn the rulings, arguing that the county limits are unconstitutional and that higher limits set by state law should apply, among other objections.

The fines add to the controversy surrounding Berrios, who is heading into a March primary as he bids for a third four-year term as assessor.

Berrios has been under fire for inaccurate assessments that favor the wealthy over the poor since the Tribune published The Tax Divide, an investigation launched in June and continued in December in collaboration with ProPublica Illinois. Federal court monitors also have criticized Berrios for being too slow to erase politics from hiring and other employment decisions as required under the anti-patronage Shakman decree.

In rulings released late Monday, the ethics board listed 30 examples of property tax attorneys or firms whose donations to Berrios main political fund in late 2016 or early 2017 exceeded the $750 limit. It fined Berrios and the Committee to Elect Joseph Berrios Cook County Assessor $1,000 for each violation, for a total of $30,000. The $1,000 fine per violation is the maximum allowed.

An additional $11,000 in fines were imposed on Berrios and his 31st Ward Democratic Organization, the source of his main power base.

The ethics board said the 41 donations to Berrios political funds exceeded the limit by a total of $62,250 an excess of $52,200 for the assessors election fund and $10,050 for the 31st Ward fund.

Some contributions flagged by the ethics board came from the countys most active tax appeal attorneys and firms.

Among them was a $1,500 contribution made by Michael Crane of Crane and Norcross, which filed appeals on nearly $7.9 billion in commercial and industrial initial values since Berrios took o...

Israeli intelligence foiled major terrorist attacks planned against European countries, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The statements was made during a speech to ambassadors from member countries of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), at a meeting in Jerusalem, reported The Times of Israel.

We have, through our intelligence services, provided information that has stopped several dozen major terrorist attacks, many of them in European countries, Netanyahu said. Some of these could have been mass attacks, of the worst kind that you have experienced on the soil of Europe and even worse, because they involve civil aviation. Israel has prevented that, and thereby helped save many European lives.

Netanyahu also said Israel was fighting Sunni and Shiite radical Islamic terrorism coming from both ISIS and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

ISIS is being destroyed in Iraq and Syria, but it is trying to establish an alternative territorial base in the Sinai. Israel is contributing to preventing that in myriad ways. In general, I would say that Israel is the most powerful indigenous force in the Middle East that fights radical Islam, Netanyahu added.

Regarding Iran, he said Israels efforts have prevented the transfer of 100,000 Iranian Shiite fighters to Syria to wage brutal sectarian war.

Where will the spillover [of a Sunni-Shiite clash in Syria] happen? In Europe. Where will the human flow go? To Europe. Whos preventing that right now? Israel? Right now, Israel alone. But I maintain that its a common interest that we have.

Although Israel is not a member of NATO, it has close ties with m...

Bitcoin Price Watch; Staying The Course "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

So we are now midway through the week and things havent been particularly easy from a bitcoin price perspective as far as long-term holdings are concerned so far. Price took a real dip overnight yet again and the bitcoin price currently sits in and around $13,800 more than 30% down on all-time highs.

As ever, when we see a dip like this, it translates to a substantial degree of weakened sentiment and generally results in an increased weakening effect purely based on the fact that people are selling in anticipation of further decline.

As most who have been in the space for a while will know, these depreciation periods arent too much of a concern and can often serve up nice opportunities to pick up cheap coins ahead of a longer-term return to the overarching upside momentum.

Thats the hope, anyway.

Whatever happens, were going to stay the course with our intraday strategy and make sure that we are ready to jump in and out of the markets as and when we get any favorable movement.

So, with this said, lets get some levels in place that we can use for the session today. As ever, take a quick look at the chart below before we get started so as to get an idea where things stand. The chart is a one-minute candlestick chart and it has our primary range overlaid in green.

As the chart shows, the range we are looking at for the session today comes in as defined by support to the downside at 13763 and resistance to the upside at 13912.

If we see price close above resistance, we will enter long towards 14050. A stop loss at 1380 looks good.

Conversely, a close below support will signal a short entry towards 13660. A stop loss on this one at 13800 works well from a risk management perspective.

The aptly named Lago Escondido (Hidden Lake), to the south of Ro Negro province, close to the border between Argentina and Chile, can only be accessed by helicopter or on a horseback journey of several days along a mountain path. English tycoon Joseph "Joe" Lewis, a personal friend of Argentine President Mauricio Macri, has kept the lake fenced for more than 20 years, ever since he bought the 11.000 hectares surrounding it. It was an irregular purchase, for this land is within the so-called "Border Security Area" and the Argentine National Defense Law does not allow it to be in foreign hands. Now a Court of Justice has reopened a lawsuit in which Lewis's eldest son and several public officials are being investigated for that fraudulent transaction.

Joe Lewis took over the land in 1996. He then built a 3.600-square-meter mansion, a guest house, stables, a soccer field, an amphitheater and a heliport. His son Charles circumvented the National Defense Law on border areas. First, the Argentine capital fund company H.R. Properties Buenos Aires S.A. presented a request for authorization to purchase 7.789 hectares before the National Commission of Security Zones, the agency which is responsible for ensuring that no key territory for national security is owned by foreigners.

Simultaneously, the foreign companies HR Properties, Lago Corp and Hidden Lake bought all the shares of the Argentine firm. Once the Commission...

Turla APT groups espionage campaigns now employs Adobe Flash Installer and an ingenious social engineering technique, the backdoor is downloaded from what appears to be legitimate Adobe URLs and IP addresses.

Security researchers from ESET who have analyzed recent cyber espionage campaigns conducted by the dreaded Turla APT group reported that hackers leverage on malware downloaded from what appears to be legitimate Adobe URLs and IP addresses.

Turla is the name of a Russian cyber espionage APT group (also known as Waterbug, Venomous Bear and KRYPTON) that has been active since at least 2007 targeting government organizations and private businesses.

The list of victims is long and includes also the Swiss defense firm RUAG, US Department of State, and the US Central Command.

The Turlas arsenal is composed of sophisticated hacking tools and malware tracked as Turla (Snake and Uroburos rootkit), Epic Turla (Wipbot and Tavdig) and Gloog Turla. In June 2016, researchers from Kaspersky reported that the Turla APT had started using rootkit), Epic Turla (Wipbot and Tavdig) and Gloog Turla.

In the most recent attacks, the group is packaging its macOS backdoor with a real Adobe Flash installer and downloading the malware on victim systems from endpoint systems that use a remote IP belonging to Akamai, the Content Delivery Network that is also used by Adobe for its supply chain. Legitimate Flash installer, in fact, are also distributed through the Akamai network.

In recent months, we have observed a strange, new behavior, leading to compromise by one of Turlas backdoors. Not only is it packaged with the real Flash installer, but it also appears to be downloaded from reads the report published by ESET.

From the endpoints perspective, the remote IP address belongs to Akamai, the official Content Delivery Network (CDN) used by Adobe to distribute their legitimate Flash

Researchers noted that Turla installers were exfiltrating information to URLs since at least July 2016, data were sent back t...

At least 13 dead after devastating mudslides hit southern California (VIDEOS, UPDATES) "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Comment: Update 10 Jan 2018, 06:00 EST The death toll is up to 13 now, and is expected to rise further. Rescue operations are underway in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, the very counties torched by California's worst-ever wildfires (and which this record rainfall just put out). This incident is already deadlier than the 2005 La Conchita landslide in southern California, which took place only 20 miles from yesterday's disaster. A fire official says five people have been killed by mudslides that swept Southern California homes from their foundations as a powerful storm drenched recent wildfire burn areas. Santa Barbara County Fire Department Capt. Dave Zaniboni says the bodies were found in mud and debris during rescue operations Tuesday in Montecito northwest of Los Angeles. Heavy rains were triggering dangerous flooding Tuesday morning in Southern California, with rivers of mud and debris destroying at least three homes and pooling water forcing police to close parts of the coastal US Route 101, officials said. Near the coastal community of Montecito, at least three homes have been "wiped away by mudflow and debris," and emergency workers were scrambling to rescue people from vehicles and buildings, Santa Barbara County fire spokesman Mike Eliason said.

Sewing a Button onto Knitwear "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Have you ever gotten to the end of a cardigan pattern only to realize that you arent quite sure how to sew on the buttons? Sure, you can sew on onto a shirt But a sweater?

While there are many ways to sew a button onto knitwear, here are two of our favorite methods: one without a backing button and one with. While both methods are very good at securing buttons, a button with a backing button is sturdier and gentler on the fabric. Give both a try and see which one you prefer!

To sew a button onto knitwear, youll need

  • A button that fits snuggly through the buttonhole
  • A tapestry needle that fits through the holes of the button
  • Some thread or fine yarn that fits through the eye of the needle
  • A larger tapestry needle for creating the shank
  • Scissors
  • A fabric marker
  • Optional: A smaller button, if you want to sew on a backing button

NOTE: These instructions are for a two-hole button but can be easily applied to a four-hole one!

Sewing On A Button Without A Backing

  1. Thread the needle and pull the thread, so that one end of the thread is slightly longer than the other. Insert the needle through one of the holes in the button from back to front, then from front to back, and pull the thread until the shorter end pulls clear of the button.
  2. With the two ends of the thread, make a square knot right near the ends of the threads. Make another knot, then snip the tails near the knot and slide the thread so that the knot is very close to the backside of the button.
  3. Find the stitch where youd like to sew the button and mark it with a fabric marker. Place the button on that stitch, making sure the knot stays close to the backside of the button. Insert the needle to one side of the marked stitch from the right side of the fabric to the wrong side and then on the other side of the marked stitch, from wrong side to right side, coming up through the other hole of the button.
  4. Pull up gently on the button to loosen the thread a little and then slide the extra tapestry needle under the loop of thread at the top of the button. Now tighten the thread.
  5. Sew back and forth through both holes of the button, from right side to wrong side and wrong side to right side, three or four times. When finished, come up from the wrong side to the right side and then back down through the next hole of the button, but not through the fabric.
  6. Remove the extra tapestry needle and wrap the thread approximately four times around the bun...

Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 1072 in First Week of 2018; Deaths: 81 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Human Wrongs Watch

Geneva, 9 January 2018 (IOM)* IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 1,072 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea during the first week of 2018, with around 450 each landing in Italy and Greece and the remainder in Spain. This compares with almost an identical number 1,159 coming ashore during a similar period in 2017.

Data on deaths at sea, however, are much grimmer.  Through the first eight days of the new year, a total of 81 Mediterranean Sea deaths of irregular migrants or refugees were recorded. Five of those deaths were in Western Mediterranean waters off Spain and Morocco.

The rest 76 with a possibility of many more were recorded in the waters between Italy and Libya. IOM recorded just 26 migrant deaths on Mediterranean Sea lanes during the month of December.

IOM Romes Flavio Di Giacomo reported Monday (8 January) that IOM staff gathering testimony of survivors of a shipwreck that occurred Saturday morning determined that 64 people lost their lives after leaving Libya on a rubber dinghy reportedly carrying 150 men, women and children.

The Italian Coast Guard Ship Diciotti rescued 86 migrants who survived to the incident, while recovering the remains of eight others, with the balance believed to be 64 people now lost at sea.

Survivors arriving in the port of Catania, Siciliy, on Monday morning provided the following details of the incident: the migrants left from Garabuli (Libya) after midnight between Friday and Saturday morning.

After some eight to nine hours at sea, their over-crowded craft began to tak...

Pink Camo Lawn Chair "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Pink Camo Lawn Chair - There are lots of things which you want to keep in mind, if you're likely to get an easy seat. At this moment, this guide is going to offer you several tips that can enable you to meet with for. Thus have a look at these advice. As the very first step, you need to decide about the prospective size restrictions for the seat you are likely to get and also the maximum measurements could be if, for instance, you're likely to move your new seat through a narrow doorway or if you're going to squeeze it into a very small living space. This is very important particularly with recliners, which ought to be pulled away from the wall and may block the traffic patterns when tilted back.

The second step would be to consider about the color since the chair will become a part of your decor for many decades. You should select something you may live with for extended time. You can pick a neutral seat that can be updated with trendy pillow. The next step that you have to do is to discover the thought about the sort of upholstery before you start to shop it, you want. In fact, the leather can be great for the family with pets and toddlers. Additionally cotton may be fine for adults that are careful.

Anyway, you need to consider the feels of this fabric's texture as you examine it. The itchy or scratchy cloth must be passed by. The pattern on the rear area of the chair has to lineup with the pattern on the cushion, if it is a stripe, large print, plaid, and so on and also on down towards the very front of seats base.

RuTracker Reveals Innovative Plan For Users to Subvert ISP Blocking "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

As Russias largest torrent site and one that earned itself a mention in TFs list of most popular torrent sites 2018, RuTracker is continuously under fire.

The site has an extremely dedicated following but Russias telecoms watchdog, spurred on by copyright holders brandishing court rulings, does everything in its power to ensure that people cant access the site easily.

As a result, RuTrackers main domains are blocked by all ISPs, meaning that people have to resort to VPNs or the many dozens of proxy and mirror sites that have been set up to facilitate access to the popular tracker.

While all of these methods used to work just fine, new legislation that came into force during October means that mirror and proxy sites can be added to block lists without copyright holders having to return to court. And, following legislation introduced in November, local VPN services are forbidden from providing access to blocked sites.

While RuTracker has always insisted that web blockades have little effect on the numbers of people sharing content, direct traffic to their main domains has definitely suffered. To solve this problem and go some way towards mitigating VPN and proxy bans, the site has just come up with a new plan to keep the torrents flowing.

The scheme was quietly announced, not on RuTrackers main forum, but to a smaller set of users on local site Leprosorium. The idea was that a quieter launch there would allow for controlled testing before a release to the masses. The project is called My.RuTracker and heres how it works.

Instead of blocked users fruitlessly trying to find public circumvention methods that once seen are immediately blocked, they are invited to register their own domains. These can be single use, for the person who registers them, but its envisioned that theyll be shared out between friends, family, and online groups, to better make use of the resource.

Once domains are registered, users are invited to contact a special user account on the RuTracker site (operated by the sites operators) which will provide them with precise technical details on how to set up their domain (.ru domains are not allowed) to gain access to RuTracker.

In response, after a while (usually every other day), a list of NS-addresses will be sent to the registrars domain settings.....

SBC: Gullible COCKERILLs Dog Poo Myth

  • an In My View report by NIGEL WARD, commenting on a Report presented to Full Council by SBC Portfolio Holder for Major Projects,  Councillor Mike COCKERILL [Ind.Ind.] addressing the South Bay pollution problem.

The official transcript of Councillor COCKERILLs verbal Report to Council on Monday 8th January 2018 is reproduced, below. Let us allow it to speak for itself. Thereafter, I propose to raise a question. Just one question. For now.

Thank you for the prior notice of your question. Whilst it specifically refers to the South Bay, my replies cover all of the designated bathing beaches along the whole of our coastline.

I will, once again, state that it is the Environment Agency which is the regulatory authority for BATHING WATER QUALITY.

Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency both have their respective and important roles and responsibilities but the greatest impact of less than EXCELLENT Bathing Water, as targeted by Yorkshire Water with its major investment programme, is on the tourism and business sectors.

As you are all aware, Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency carried out a major DNA sampling programme of bathing water within the South Bay and Wheatcroft area of Scarborough in late summer of 2016. You have all received copies of the detailed technical report together with the Executive Summary.

The findings of the report are guiding further work towards identifying possible sources and locations where different types of pollution start to be problematic. As was always stressed, we did not believe the report would, alone, provide all the answers to be able to solve the problem.

Some colleagues will have seen the article on BBC Look North last Wednesday when representatives from the Environmental Agency and Yorkshire Water were interviewed.

At this point I would state that I was not approached to participate, probably as the BBC understands, it is those interviewed that have the direct responsibility for Bathing Water Quality.

I am indebted to The Chief Executive together with the Leader and Deputy Leader who met with the Chief Executive of Yorkshire Water as recently as last w...

Senior Hamas leader Imad al-Alami shot himself in the head by accident while cleaning his weapon, according to a Hamas spokesperson.

The accident occured while al-Alami, also known as Abu Hamam, was inspecting his personal weapon in his home, Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum told media. Alami is in critical condition and is reportedly being treated at a hospital in Gaza city.

The BBC reported that, according to initial reports, the shooting may have been an assassination attempt.

Alami, now in his sixties, was one of the founders of Hamas and is a former member of the groups political bureau. He was designated as a special global terrorist by the United States in 2003, along with five other senior Hamas leaders.

From 1994, when he was exiled from Israel, until 2008, when he moved to Damascus, he represented Hamas in Iran. In 2012 he became deputy Hamas leader on his return to Gaza, according to The Daily Wire. He held that position until early 2017.

More on Seagate's Plans to Double HDD Speeds With Multi-Actuator Technology "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The Register asked Seagate's Director of Technology Strategy and Product Planning Jason Feist about the company's plans to use multi-actuator technology in upcoming hard disk drives. Seagate insists that the technology can double input/output operations per second (rather than increasing it by, for example, 1.8x), and says that customers have validated the concept:

Howard Marks, founder and chief scientist at Deep Storage Net said: "We've had drives with 2 positioners before (IBM 3380 - one set of heads were dedicated to inner tracks, the other to outer tracks). That was back in the day of linear voice coils so they came from opposite sides of the 14-inch platters."

He identifies a software issue with Seagate's multi-actuator single pivot design: "Most storage software including logical volume managers and file systems, are built with the knowledge that a disk drive can only have it's heads in one place at a time and their queuing logic may mismatch with the multipositioner logic." This means: "It may not double throughput for large I/Os."

It could get close though, as "I understand that Seagate is going to make these look like 2 logical drives via a driver. That should solve #1 above and let systems get 1.8-1.9X IOPS."

After Data Breaches and Leaks, UIDAI Rolls Out New Security Measures "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

A new virtual ID and UID token system will roll out from March 2018 in an attempt to crack down on privacy violations by errant private enrolment partners and authentication agencies.

Like how the UPI system works for bank transfers, the UIDAI hopes the virtual ID will allow users to no longer hand over their Aadhaar numbers. Credit: Reuters

New Delhi: A new sweeping two-tier security system for the Aadhaar programme was announced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Thursday, weeks after a wave of data breaches and leaks raised fresh privacy and security concerns.

One new measure is the introduction of a virtual ID for every Aadhaar holder  a temporary 16-digit number that will be mapped to a users Aadhaar number that will allow the individual in question to avoid furnishing his or her Aadhaar number at the time of authentication.

The second, according to an IT ministry notification, is the creation of a limited KYC (know your customer) service that will purportedly prevent agencies from storing Aadhaar numbers during the paperless KYC process.

Residents are currently required to share Aadhaar number to authenticate their identity to avail various services. With the introduction of virtual ID (VID), a fungible number mapped to the Aadhaar number, Aadhaar number holders will have an option not to share their Aadhaar number to improve privacy, the notification says.

Iran Accuses US of Grotesque Interference in Internal Affairs "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Andre Vltchek
RT OpEdge

The diplomatic and media storm is far from abiding with questions about the origin of the protests. What really took place in Iran at the very end of year 2017 and at the very beginning of 2018? Was it a spontaneous rebellion, an attempt to improve economic and social situation in the country, a revolt against ayatollahs, or both? Was it really a protest against Iranian-style socialism?

Protests in Iran are winding down, and the streets in most of the cities are becoming quiet again. But the question remains: who was behind the events that took at least 22 human lives?

Or was it, after all, a bold and ruthless attempt from abroad to overthrow the Iranian system?

Many, including this writer, believe that it was yet another effort of Washington and its allies to trigger a Color-style revolution in an extremely important country that stands in the way to their geopolitical and economic interests.

Protests began in Mashhad on December 28, reportedly over rising food prices and growing unemployment. Within days, protesters in several other cities called for overthrowing the government and the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

No country can create a secure environment for itself at the expense of creating insecurity among its neighbors, Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday, warning outside actors who sought to exploit the protests, without naming them.

Iran also has sent a letter to the UN, accusing the US of grotesque interference in its internal affairs.

It has been pointed out by Russias envoy to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia:

The feeling is that there is some sort of inexplicable allergy to this country and it clouds the thinking about events in this country and leads to wishful thinking.

Perhaps such thinking could be described as morally inexplicable, but from the strictly pragmatic stance that is governing foreign policy of the United States, it is quite logical.  There were just too many similarities with the events that during the last years and decades shook various areas of...

Partners have identified about 20 children separated from their families during the violence but estimate the total number to be at least 100 most of whom are in parts of northern Rakhine state that they still cannot access, Marixie Mercado, UNICEF spokesperson told journalists in Geneva during a briefing on her visit to Myanmar from 6 December 2017 through 3 January.

She painted a harrowing picture of the situation in Rakhine, noting that prior to 25 August, when the most recent outbreak of violence occurred, UNICEF had been treating 4,800 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition; these children are no longer receiving this life-saving treatment.

New Senators Get Committee Assignments "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

My geekiest feature is my obsession with the makeup of Senate committees, so I was impatiently waiting to get the news of how things would be organized in the post-Roy Moore/Al Franken world. And I am pleased. Very pleased.

The full Senate is set to ratify revised committee rosters and ratios before adjourning Tuesday evening.

The changes add a Democrat to the Finance and Judiciary Committees, because each needed new Democrats to provide an across-the-board one-seat advantage for the GOP with their diminished majority.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York announced the new Democratic assignments, which are highlighted by the appointments of Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California to the Judiciary Committee.

Booker and Harris become only the second and third African-American members of the Judiciary panel in American history.

There's other news, too. You might be interested in this:

Alabama Democratic Sen. Doug Jones will sit on the Banking, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Homeland Security and Aging panels.

Sen. Tina Smith, Minnesotas new appointed senator, has received assignments to the Agriculture, Energy and Natural Resources, HELP and Indian Affairs committees.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse landed the coveted seat on the Finance Committee, which is fine by me.

If I was making the decisions, I'd probably give Jones some different committee assignments, but they're treating him pretty much like any other fresh meat. I expect he'll want to dive into the education work on HELP, and maybe his spot on banking will make him some friends back home that he can't afford to have as enemies if he wants to have a prayer of getting elected to a full term.

For the same reason, I worry that he won't be a solid vote on labor issues which would be really unfortunate for running the HELP committee in the event the Democrats win back a narrow majority.

Tina Smith's assignments seem better suited to helping her make inroads with the constituencies she'll need to hold her seat.

GOP Cares More About Agenda Than Midterms "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Ron Brownstein has a pretty good analysis of the Republicans electoral strategy, but I think hes missing one important ingredient. He identifies two basic decisions that the Republicans have already taken that will have a major impact on the midterms and that will very difficult to compensate for over the course of the campaigns.

The first has been to align more closely with Trump even as questions have mounted about both his basic fitness for the presidency and the potential legal exposure that he and his inner circle might face in the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller. The second has been to pursue a policy agenda, on issues from taxes to health care to the environment, aimed almost entirely at the preferences of their partys conservative base, with strikingly few concessions to any voices or interests beyond their core coalition.

Before November, the GOP might modulate each of these choices. But Republicans have engraved the fundamental outline of each direction so deeply over the past year that they are unlikely to be significantly altered.

The decisions to increasingly lock arms with Trump and to pursue such a partisan agenda reflect the same political calculation. On each front, Republicans are placing the highest priority on maximizing unity and enthusiasm among their base voters even at the price of infuriating and energizing Democrats, and antagonizing more swing voters especially suburban college-educated whites. For voters anywhere on the continuum from ambivalent to alarmed about Trump, congressional Republicans are now sending a clear signal that they are far more inclined to empower than to constrain him.

I think all of that is accurate. Yet, what it seems to miss is that the Republicans are looking to achieve as much as they can while they have their majorities rather than trimming their sails in the effort to maintain their majorities. This should be familiar, as its precisely what the Democrats did in 2009 and 2010. And the Democrats might have hoped back then that theyd be rewarded by their base with a lot of support and enthusiasm in the 2010 midterms, but the eventual result was that the opposition was more mobilized by a very wide margin. It turned out that doing things like vastly expanding access to health care after decades of futility caused the base to moan about the details and be complacent about the accomplishment. Doing what you promised isnt as good of a vote-getter as being in the minority while your party is getting rolled by the opposition.

It didnt help that the Democrats didnt act like they were proud of their achievements or in love with their...

The Government Shutdown Battlefield "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

When you look at all the issues that need to be negotiated before January 19th to avoid a government shutdown, its very hard to see how a shutdown can conceivably be avoided. Theres always the possibility that theyll pass another short-term continuing resolution to buy themselves more time, but even that is looking unlikely.

Because there are so many areas of dispute, both parties have a lot of options for assigning blame to the other side. If there is a shutdown, the Republicans will most likely opt to focus on two areas. One will be the old standby of a strong national defense. The GOP wants to cut a deal to break the budget caps put in place by the Budget Control Act of 2011. But the Democrats are insisting that any increase in authorized spending be split between defense and non-defense spending. The Republicans will argue that the Pentagon has been systematically underfunded ever since 2011 and that the Democrats are leaving our military in a weakened condition. Theyll argue that the Democrats are shutting down the government to protect illegal immigrants, which is also imperiling our national security.

If the Democrats want to shut down the government because they cant get amnesty for illegal immigrants, then theyre going to have to defend those actions to the American people, Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas said Sunday on ABCs This Week program.

As you can see from the two Democratic senators from New Hampshire, the Democrats will never concede that a shutdown is being done to protect the Dreamers because too many of them are frightened by the rhetoric of people like Sen. Tom Cotton. So, while they will appeal to the publics general sympathy for the Dreamers who are protected by an expiring DACA, and they will claim that they are fighting for them, if there is a shutdown they will argue that its about Trumps stupid border wall. And theyll note that Trump promised over and over again that the Mexicans would pay for his stupid border wall.

On the defense appropriations, the Democrats will counter that the Republicans just gave away all the money to millionaires with their tax reform, and that the budget rules are needed to control runaway deficit spending. If the caps are going to be busted, the money should go equally to the military and to domestic spending, including investments in educa...
