Wow.

FBI Baffled by Encryption, 1978 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

- PrepareWithBill - Food Storage You Can Depend On. 888-756-8727 https://preparewith.com/Bill.Still Good evening, Im still reporting on: FBI Baffled by Encryption, 1978 Synopsis: New FBI Director Christopher Wray, speaking on Tuesday at a cyber-security conference in New York, said that powerful encryption tools now becoming widely available are frustrating his agency. Surprise, surprise; last year, the FBI was unable to access data from 7800 devices thats over 50% - despite having legal authority to do so i.e. a legitimate warrant from a real judge. Wray warned the audience of cyber-security experts from around the world: This is an urgent public safety issue. [The solution] is not so clear cut. The FBI has been trying to require manufacturers to provide backdoors into their devices for law enforcement who obtain a warrant. However, the public is demanding more security from the government, not less, especially in light of the fact that the latest batch of cyber criminals were a literal cabal within both the FBI and Justice Department to attack the current President and help cover the crimes of his opponent and her husband, a past president. Just a few months ago some wondered if the FBI was not playing a deceitful game by pretending not to be able to break through current encryption techniques. However, it has recently come to light that utilizing the best commercially-available security practices can stop government snooping cold even one level of technology above that level currently available to the FBI. Yes, this is a huge problem for law enforcement, but one that is self-generated. Therefore, this is an impossible time for Mr. Wray to effectively make this case due to his own Bureaus recent and ongoing illegal activities. Wray could, at any moment, throw open the doors of complete transparency to the FBIs involvement with the Clinton Crime Cabal. Instead, he has chosen to continue to use the immense power of the Bureau to stonewall Congressional investigations and obstruct justice at every step of the way. Mike Pence Rescues Iraqi Christians, 1977 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

- Virtual Shield VPN - the easiest way to create a home VPN. Go to: https://www.virtualshield.com/billstill Good morning, Im still reporting on: Mike Pence Rescues Iraqi Christians, 1977 Synopsis: According to the Washington Free Beacon, Vice President Mike Pence has caused State Department money to be shifted around to bring much-needed relief to persecuted Christians in the Iraqi city of Nineva after being devastated by the ISIS terror army. In an October speech, Pence promised that the administration would stop the State Departments ineffective relief efforts that gave all money to the U.N. to distribute in Iraq. The United States will work hand in hand from this day forward with faith-based groups and private organizations to help those who are persecuted for their faith. This is the moment, now is the time, and America will support these people in their hour of need. ISIS deci mated the Christian population in Iraq. There were 1.4 million Christians in Iraq. That has now dropped to below 250,000. The new money will go towards restoring basic services, such as water, electricity, sewage, health and education. The Knights of Columbus, one of the largest Catholic charities, has sent millions of dollars in donations to the Catholic archdiocese in Northern Iraq, one of the few groups on the ground providing relief to Christians and Yazidis and help to rebuild their homes. Teen Murti Chowk Renamed After Israeli City Haifa "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Credit: PTI

New Delhi: Teen Murti Chowk in central Delhi was formally rechristened as Teen Murti-Haifa Chowk in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu today.

The two leaders also laid a wreath and signed the visitors book at the memorial.

In the visitors book, Modi wrote that he saluted the great Indian traditions of selfless sacrifice and penance of Indian soldiers, who laid down their lives during the liberation of the city of Haifa and World War I.

One of these pages was written 100 years ago, in the sacrifice of Indian soldiers at Haifa. The sacrifice commemorated at Teen Murti observes its centenary. Naming this spot as Teen Murti-Haifa Chowk marks this historic occasion. In the presence of the prime minister of Israel, we pay homage to the brave soldiers, Modi wrote in the visitors book.

Netanyahu, who arrived on a six-day visit today, was received by Modi at the airport, setting aside protocol.

The three bronze statues at Teen Murti represent the Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers who were part of the 15 Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade.

The brigade carried out the victorious assault on the fortif...

Putting class back onto the UK's equality agenda "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The directors of a new documentary about class stratification in Britains acting profession argue that class needs to be added back into the UK Equality Act.

lead Tom Stocks At Eton. The Acting Class. Insideflim. All rights reserved. In 2010, the then Home Secretary of the UKs new Conservative-Liberal Coalition government announced that she would be repealing part one of the Equality Act that had been passed in the last days of the Labour government. Her name? Theresa May. Part one of the Act mandated public authorities such as government ministers, departments, local borough councils, health authorities and others, to develop strategies designed to reduce the inequalities of outcome which result from socio-economic disadvantage.

Interestingly, socio-economic disadvantage was not seen as part of the protected characteristics listed in part two of the Equality Act.  These characteristics were protected against discrimination and nine were identified: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

It is not hard to see why the question of socio-economic disadvantage was separated from the question of discrimination in the Act.  How can a society structured around socio-economic inequalities admit that this amounts to discrimination against those crowded at the bottom end of the distribution of economic rewards?  In a market-based society it simply cannot be illegal to discriminate against people on the grounds of their economic resources. Still, the original provisions of part one, carefully contained as they were, was a potentially useful starting point in at least acknowledging the reality of socio-economic disadvantage and requiring the collection of relevant data that could feed into strategic decision-making to improve things.

It was of course too much for the incoming government of 2010, which was about to embark on an extensive austerity programme  designed not only to make the poor poorer by cutting social benefits but to eradicate any positive representation of working class life and working c...

Trump vs the 5th Grade Tattletales, 1976 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

- Trade Genius Academy: Learn the safe, sure way to trade. https://www.TradeGeniusAcademy.com Good evening, Im still reporting on: Synopsis:Democrats have completely lost touch with the concept of forgoing some possible small, short-term political gain at the expense of the welfare of the nation as a whole. Yes, even presidents talk the way President Trump reportedly talked in a small private meeting in the Oval office yesterday. President Obama used those exact words to describe some of the poorer nations of the world, however, that never made the huge splash in the news for two reasons; #1 Democrats were scared to death of besmirching the reputation of the leader of the evil empire; and #2, Republicans had sufficient respect for the office, despite it being inhabited by the evil emperor, that they kept such private conversations, private, for the benefit of the nation as a whole. Democrats had better wake up. They are so desperate to destroy President Trump that they will do anything, say anything, even divulge private conversations in the Oval Office during heated negotiations. Guess what? No more visits to the White House. But also guess what? We, the American people, see it. We know what you are doing, and one minor swear word is no surprise to anyone. And it dwindles to insignificance compared to the major turnarounds Trump has already achieved across the face of our government. What did you think about the 5th grade tattletale? You immediately shunned him. Here is just one tiny example of what we see. Trump has already made a HUGE difference for millions of wage-earning families across the nation, ALREADY! In new role, Japans warships patrolling waters around Koreas to foil oil smuggling "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

KYODO

Maritime Self-Defense Force ships have been deployed to waters around the Korean Peninsula, even near the Northern Limit Line, since late last year to thwart North Korean attempts to evade international sanctions, government sources say.

Following a request from the U.S. military in December, MSDF ships have been stationed in areas including the Yellow Sea to monitor whether refined oil is being transferred from foreign ships to North Korean vessels in violation of U.N. sanctions imposed on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programs, the sources said Friday.

The government may report on that effort Tuesday at an international meeting of foreign ministers regarding North Korean issues in Vancouver, British Columbia.

According to the sources, the MSDF is following the standard rules for warning and surveillance activities for the mission. The main purpose is to monitor ship movements and collect information to share with the United States. The MSDF does not forcibly inspect ships, as it is not authorized to do so unless certain conditions are met under the Self-Defense Forces Law.

But the government believes the activities will put more pressure not only on North Korea, but also on China and Russia, which are allegedly economic enablers of North Koreas weapons development programs.

So far, the MSDF has sent vessels to areas where suspicious ships are found by its P-3C surveillance planes during daily patrols over the East China Sea and elsewhere.

In the Yellow Sea, to the west of the Korean Peninsula, the MSDF has sometimes sailed as far as the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between North and South Korea, the sources said.

The MSDF takes photos of suspicious ships and provides information to the U.S., which is leading global efforts to impose tough economic sanctions on North Korea, according to the sources.

Missions also take place in the Sea of Japan.

A senior MSDF official, however, admitted that it is not clear whether the efforts will yield substantial results in foiling oil smuggling.

We cannot forcibly investigate ships. They could leave the area and sail to a different location to meet (a North Korean ship) and transfer the items, the official said. The activities have significance in tightening the net around North Korea, but the actual effects remain uncertain.

The U.N. Security Council has imposed stepped-up sanctions against North Korea as it continues to test-fire missiles and carry out nuclear tests.

Last September, a council resolution prohibited the ships of U.N. memb...

Gilad Atzmon and Islam "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Introduction GA: In the following book review Jay Knott suggests that  Being in Time scores a very high mark on many fronts, however, the text fails to attack Muslims and Islam. In the last two decades I have been accused of many things but this is the first time I am criticised  for 'not being an Islamophobe.' I have met Knott before and I think that regardless of the peculiar premise of this text,  it deserves attention.

Gilad Atzmon and Islam

Book Review by Jay Knott

A review of Being In Time a post-political manifesto, Gilad Atzmon, Skyscraper Publications, 2017

There is just one point where I have encountered a difficulty  Russell to Frege, 1902.

I introduced a talk by Gilad Atzmon, and organised a reading group to discuss his first book, The Wandering Who?, about Jewish identity politics. We had many criticisms of it.

The new book is much broader, and better. I have only one major criticism. This article is about that criticism, but though as a result its mostly negative, I actually think this book is a major contribution to understanding the times we live in. It explains Donald Trump, Brexit, the left, identity politics, political correctness, and especially, US support for Jewish supremacy in the Middle East. It is undogmatic, finding inputs from a wide range of sources. Atzmon even manages to get something useful out of the book The Bell Curve while rejecting its central premise, IQ. I mostly agreed with much of Being in Time.

But chapter four, United Against Unity, woke me up with a jolt.

But what about Hammed, a metal worker from Birmingham? Hammed identifies as a Muslim can he join a Left demonstration against the War in Syria? Its a good question and the answer is not immediately obvious because its no secret that many of those who subscribe to progressive and liberal ideologies and especially activists...

A female sergeant with nearly 20 years on the force is coming forward with claims of sexual harassment and discrimination within the Toronto Police Service, allegations detailed in a recent complaint filed to the Human Rights Tribunal on Ontario.

Sgt. Pirate Streaming on Facebook is a Seriously Risky Business "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

For more than a year the British public has been warned about the supposed dangers of Kodi piracy.

Dozens of headlines have claimed consequences ranging from system-destroying malware to prison sentences. Fortunately, most of them can be filed under tabloid nonsense.

That being said, there is an extremely important issue that deserves much closer attention, particularly given a shift in the UK legal climate during 2017. Were talking about live streaming copyrighted content on Facebook, which is both incredibly easy and frighteningly risky.

This week it was revealed that 34-year-old Craig Foster from the UK had been given an ultimatum from Sky to pay a 5,000 settlement fee. The media giant discovered that hed live-streamed the Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko fight on Facebook and wanted compensation to make a potential court case disappear.

While it may seem initially odd to use the word, Foster was lucky.

Under last years Digital Economy Act, he couldve been jailed for up to ten years for distributing copyright-infringing content to the public, if he had reason to believe that communicating the work to the public [would] cause loss to the owner of the copyright, or [would] expose the owner of the copyright to a risk of loss.

Clearly, as a purchaser of the 19.95 pay-per-view himself, he wouldve appreciated that the event costs money. With that in mind, a court would likely find that he would have been aware that Sky would have been exposed to a risk of loss. Sky claim that 4,250 people watched the stream but the way the law is written, no specific level of loss is required for a breach of the law.

But its not just the threat of a jail sentence thats the problem. People streaming live sports on Facebook are sitting ducks.

In Fosters case, the fight he streamed was watermarked, which means that Sky put a tracking code into it which identified him personally as the buyer of the event. When he (or his friend, as Foster claims) streamed it on Facebook, it was trivial for Sky to capture the watermark and track it back to his Sky account.

Equally, it would be simplicity itself to see that the name on the Sky account had exactly the same name and details as Fosters Facebook account. So, to most observers, it would appear that not only had Foster p...

San Diego Man Gets 10 Years for Supporting Terror "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Foreign Islamic State fighters preparing to execute captured Syrian pilotsForeign Islamic State fighters preparing to execute captured Syrian pilots (Photo: video screenshot)

A San Diego man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegal possession of a firearms cache and body armor and making false statements to federal agents involving international terrorism.

Marchello Dsaun McCain, 35, a previously convicted felon (for assault with a firearm), provided assistance to others who had joined ISIS abroad, including his brother Douglas McCain.

Knowing that his brother intended to travel abroad to join ISIS, McCain deposited money in his wifes bank account, then let his brother use his wifes credit card to purchase plane tickets to Turkey, a known entry point to Syria for foreign fighters. He also let his brother make hotel reservations from the same credit card.

McCain regularly communicated with his brother and others regarding the financial and logistical needs of foreign fighters in Syria, at one point wiring $800 to an ISIS operative in Turkey to support his brother, among others. He also agreed to travel to Syria to join them.

In August of 2014, McCains brother became the first American known to have been killed fighting for ISIS in Syria.

The next January, McCain was arrested on the firearms charges. Eight months later, he pleaded guilty to lying to FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force agents about his assistance to and knowledge of individuals engaged in violent terrorist activities abroad.

ISIS has brought the war on terror closer to home by directing and inspiring attacks in the U.S. and other countries, thereby putting Americans lives in danger, said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman at McCains sentencing. By lying to federal agents, Marchello McCain delayed, frustrated and thwarted an investigation into a group that supplied U.S. and Canadian fighters to ISIS. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to protect American lives here and abroad.

Mining Boom in A Small Town

Wenatchee is home to a dozen of the largest bitcoin miners, becoming something of an epicentre. It appears a steady stream of investors are discovering the town as an optimum place to mine. Steve Wright, the head of the local power utility, says that another 75 have inquired about coming to the town:

Weve come from just a few people out there who have been knocking on the door to all of a sudden to people who are banging on the door pretty loudly.

Bitcoin mining is known to be energy-consuming. But miners here appear not to have this problem. Power is extremely cheap for the town only 2 to 3 cents per kilowatt hour.

An early miner in the town, Malachi Salcido, owns three data centers in the area capable of generating 5 to 7 BTC per day. Salcido uses 7.5 megawatts of power and wants to produce 50 BTC per day by July, which would require a whopping 42 megawatts of power. The town of Wenatchee is key in his plans.

Power outages set off IV bag shortages

13 January 2018

Hospitals nationwide are in the midst of one of the most severe medical product shortages in modern US history. With half of Puerto Rico still without power, the major medical supply giant on the islandBaxter Internationalhas been unable to keep up with the production of the millions of IV bags upon which hospitals throughout the US mainland rely on for basic daily medical treatment of their patients.

Erin Fox, director of the University of Utahs drug information service, told the Guardian Weve seen some pretty terrible shortages. This shortage proves that things can always get worse. It affects every single medication that we are giving in our hospital.

IV fluid bags are an essential part of modern medical care in hospitals, where they are used to dilute and administer medication.

This critical shortage has been exacerbated by a sharp increase in flu cases nationwide, sending patients to hospitals where they often require IV drip medications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that 46 states are experiencing widespread flu activity, comparable to the peak of the 2014-2015 season, which was the most severe flu season in recent years.

Since flu season usually peaks in January and February many medical professionals have expressed grave concern about how the shortages will be handled in the coming months. The flu kills anywhere from 2,000 to 56,000 Americans every year, and puts 140,000 to 710,000 people into the hospital, according to the CDC. The Responsibility to Protect the World... from the United States "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Neocons like William Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Pearl were the driving forces in pushing for the war in Iraq. They understood if they wanted to sell war, Americans needed to believe the conflict was about values, not interests. The neocons dusted off and put a new face on that old rationalization for colonialismthe white mans burden. Interventions were to bring democracy and freedom to those people who were struggling to be just like their more advanced models in the white West. Liberal interventionists further developed those ideas into humanitarian interventionism and the responsibility to protect.

The Tunisian revolution seven years on "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Seven years after the Tunisian revolution one can dissect four main conflict issues in Tunisia today.

A rally marking the third anniversary of the uprising that ousted long-time dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14, 2014 in Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis. Picture by Palacio Marieau/ABACA/PA Images. All rights reserved.Thirty years last November Zine el Abidine Ben Ali assumed power in Tunisia ending thereby the rule of ailing Habib Bourguiba who ruled the country since its independence in 1956. Ben Ali promised political reforms that lured large segments of the Tunisian polity, including the Islamists. Those hopes were soon shattered by the brutal crackdown following the 1989 general elections in which Ennahda ran on independent lists, and came second after Ben Alis RCD party. Leftists were not spared either and by 2010 Ben Ali managed to unite most Tunisians against his authoritarian rule. Tunisians embarked on a political transition that has been underway seven years now.

Dubbed the Arab Springs exception, a number of explanations have been put forward by different analysts. There is the role of a vibrant civil society, high levels of education, the homogenous fabric of the Tunisian society, and the limited geostrategic interests. One important factor, however, is experiences of dialogue and coalition building among political and civil society actors of different worldviews, especially between secular leftists and Islamists. Those involved in the 18 October 2005 dialogue initiative rightly argue that the outcome of that experience facilitated reaching the agreement on which the 2012 Troika government was formed.

The international community hailed the 2014 constitution as unique in the Arab world

Political transitions following bottom up upheavals are very difficult to navigate in that they bring to the surface all the contradictions that were suppressed by the authoritarian regime. It was inevitab...

Trump Administration plan sees deterrence in new nuclear firepower "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

WASHINGTON (AP) With Russia in mind, the Trump administration is aiming to develop new nuclear firepower that it says will make it easier to deter threats to European allies.

The plan, not yet approved by President Donald Trump, is intended to make nuclear conflict less likely. Critics argue it would do the opposite.

The proposal is spelled out in a policy document, known officially as a nuclear posture review, that puts the U.S. in a generally more aggressive nuclear stance. It is the first review of its kind since 2010 and is among several studies of security strategy undertaken since Trump took office.

In many ways it reaffirms the nuclear policy of President Barack Obama, including his commitment to replace all key elements of the nuclear arsenal with new, more modern weapons over the coming two decades.

It says the U.S. will adhere to existing arms control agreements, while expressing doubt about prospects for any new such pacts. The Trump nuclear doctrine is expected to be published in early February, followed by a related policy on the role and development of U.S. defenses against ballistic missiles.

Where the Trump doctrine splits from Obamas approach is in ending his push to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in U.S. defense policy. Like Obama, Trump would consider using nuclear weapons only in extreme circumstances, while maintaining a degree of ambiguity about what that means. But Trump sees a fuller deterrent role for these weapons, as reflected in the plan to develop new capabilities to counter Russia in Europe.

The Huffington Post published online a draft of the nuclear policy report Thursday, and The Associated Press independently obtained a copy Friday. Asked for commen...

The Etymology of Tea/Chai "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Image Quartz, qz.com

Most of us have either ordered a chai latte at a caf before, or at least a cup of tea. I, for one, always assumed that chai was just the Hindi word for tea, and that in the US this always meant tea with certain spices, versus normal tea being plain old green or black tea leaves. But instead of getting into semantics, I want to share some of the etymology behind the two words, tea and chai, that I learned from an article in Quartz by Nikhil Sonnad:

With a few minor exceptions, there are really only two ways to say tea in the world. One is like the English termt in Spanish and tee in Afrikaans are two examples. The other is some variation of cha, like chay in Hindi.

Both versions come from China. How they spread around the world offers a clear picture of how globalization worked before globalization was a term anybody used. The words that sound like cha spread across land, along the Silk Road. The tea-like phrasings spread over water, by Dutch traders bringing the novel leaves back to Europe.

The term cha () is Sinitic, meaning it is common to many varieties of Chinese. It began in China and made its way through central Asia, eventually becoming chay () in Persian. That is no doubt due to the trade routes of the Silk Road, along which, according to a recent discovery, tea was traded over 2,000 years ago. This form spread beyond Persia, becoming chay in Urdu, shay in Arabic, and chay in Russian, among others. It even it made its way to sub-Saharan Africa, where it became chai in Swahili. The Japanese and Korean terms for tea are also based on the Chinese cha, though those languages likely adopted the word even before its westward spread into Persian.

But that doesnt account for tea. The Chinese character for tea, , is pronounced differently by different varieties of Chinese, though it is written the same in them all. In todays Mandarin, it is ch. But in the Min Nan variety of Chinese, spoken in the coastal province of Fujian, the character is pronounced te. The key word here is coastal.

Ballistic missile threat warning in Hawaii a false alarm "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Hawaii ballistic missile threat alert to phones was false alarm, officials say.

Hawaiians were thrown into a panic Saturday morning after an emergency alert was mistakenly sent, warning them to seek immediate shelter from a ballistic missile threat, and it took emergency officials 38 minutes to send a new alert to mobile phones that the threat was a false alarm.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Administrator Vern Miyagi said at a press conference with the governor Saturday afternoon that a single individual sent out the alert by mistake. The individual went so far as to click through a second message, intended as a safeguard, that asked whether the alert should go out.

South Tyrol a distorting mirror for Vienna, Rome and liberal London "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Three capitals the financial and military heart, the bridge with eastern Europe, and the ancient caput mundi on the Mediterranean form a triangle, at whose centre emerges South Tyrol.

lead Benito says believe, obey, fight! Bolzanos bas-relief, 2008. Flickr/John Shave. Some rights reserved.South Tyrol is a hot topic, currently being debated in Austria, Italy and Britain. They boast loud politics, drawing in others as well. In all three, Euroscepticism has firmly taken hold.

One section of the London press and Vienna's newly elected government have zoned in on Italy's largest, richest and least Italian of all provinces. What they discussed contains a throwback to the upheavals of the first post-war period.

Half a million South Tyroleans can still feel the icy reverberations of that time. Others know this too; they peer anxiously, everyone holding a different lens.

The Guardian published an analysis on how a fascist bas-relief in Bozen's Gerichtsplatz (Law Court Square) has been defused by a work of art, one inspired by Hannah Arendt's thinking. (Oddly enough, the op-ed never uses the terms 'South Tyrol' or 'South Tyrolean', but instead employs the Italian name 'Bolzano', not emphasising sufficiently the Austrian ethnic side of the story.)

From the bombastic headline A small Italian town can teach the world how to defuse controversial monuments it would rightly seem that the sole merit goes to this mountain municipality.

But, digging deeper, you find another consideration: in 2011 it was apparently the government in Rome which asked Bozen to do something about the Mussolini-on-a-horse. Whereas London waxes lyrical about all things Italian, Austria openly challenges Italy.

Not so much a local initiative, then, as a push from Rome. A sign that Italy might well have woken up from its torpor and recalibrated the past, ready to honour the re...

Kate Winslet weeps at scratchcard win "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

There were tearful scenes in North London yesterday as Kate Winslet reacted with stunned humility and was then overcome with emotion at her surprise win of 10 on a National Lottery scratch-card.

The card had been bought for her by her husband, director Sam Mendes, as a little domestic joke and at a dinner party in Hampstead, various showbiz guests were invited to scratch off the silver coating on their cards to see if any of them had won. When Sam announced that the winner of the maximum ten pound prize was Kate Winslet, his wife burst into tears as she stepped up to accept the cash.

There are so many great actors who deserve this more than me, wept Kate to the assembled guests. Really memorable actresses like Thingy, you know, whatserface. I would like to thank the National Lottery, Mr Patel who sold Sam the card, my friends and family for all the support they gave me on the incredible journey, and oh, God theres bound to be someone Ive forgotten.

Culture Minister Andy Burnham held up Winslets scratchcard win as a triumph for the United Kingdom. Britain is leading the field this year, with more scratchcard wins than the Americans and Europeans. It is something of which we can all be very proud.

Earlier in the month Kate was overcome with emotion when she got the little plastic toy with her portion of breakfast cereal and last week was tearful to discover that she was the millionth visitor to a website and had won a mystery prize. I could never have won this without the other 999,999 visitors sobbed Ms Winslet, who tomorrow flies to Nigeria to collect it with the cash payment that is apparently needed to access her latest award.

MANILA, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte rejected the proposed term extensions for government officials, including himself, as his allies in Congress plan a shift to a federal form of government.

In an interview with MindaNews, Duterte also thumbed down the proposed suspension of elections if charter change pushes through.

There will be no suspension of elections, and there will be no term extension, especially for me, Duterte told MindaNews on Friday, January 12.

With discussions on charter change taking place in Congress, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez previously said he is open to cancelling the 2019 midterm elections if the Philippines transitions to a federal form of government.

Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III also said the 6-year term of President Rodrigo Duterte may be extended if necessary during the countrys transition to federalism.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, however, responded to these statements saying Duterte wants to cut short his term, rather than extend it. (READ: Malacaang says Duterte doesnt want term extension)

Dutertes term is set to end in 2022.

In the same interview, Duterte also said he envisioned a unicameral legislature composed of about 50 members, should the Philippines adopt a federal form of government.

New Delhi: Indias position in the World Banks annual ease of doing business index could be affected as the Washington-based institution moves to recalculate its rankings of the last four years amid suspicion that their sanctity might have been compromised due to the reported use of politicised methodology.

The World Banks chief economist, Paul Romer, on Friday told The Wall Street Journal that the bank would be recalculating national rankings of business competitiveness in the report called Doing Business going back at least four years.

India broke into the top 100 in the World Banks latest ease of doing business rankings, notching up the biggest improvement among all countries on the back of big gains on a number of measures. The rise to the 100th position from 130th the previous year made India one of the top 10 best-improved countries, which the Modi government celebrated as an emphatic endorsement of its economic reforms.

Zimbabwe woman arrested trying to smuggle ivory to Malaysia "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Newsday

12 January 2018

A 34-YEAR-OLD Norton woman appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court yesterday charged with contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act after she allegedly tried to smuggle out 200 kilogrammes of ivory to Malaysia disguised as kitchen floor tiles through Robert Mugabe International Airport.

BY DESMOND CHINGARANDE

Respina Masukuta was not asked to plead when she appeared before magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa, who remanded her in custody to January 25 after advising her to apply for bail at the High Court.

It is the States case that on December 9 last year, Respina and Rainstone Masukuta, who is still at large, hatched a plan to illegally export a consignment of 200kg of processed elephant ivory.

The State alleges the two approached Meili Lin alias Annah, a registered ivory dealer who is still at large, who accepted to take part in the deal and secure customers from abroad. Annah allegedly secured a customer in Kuala Lumpur, and they agreed to disguise the processed ivory as ceramic kitchen tiles for easy passage of the clearing procedures.

Annah, Respina and Rainstone Masukuta sought and influenced the services of Ephraim Ncube and Rebecca Manyere in the processing of the export.

It is alleged as a result of the connivance, export papers were prepared by Ncube and the consignment of the processed ivory disguised as ceramic kitchen tiles received by Manyere during the clearing process.

The State alleges upon completion of the paper work, the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) got wind of the intended illegal export deal prompting a physical examination of the consignment leading to the detection of the crime. The processed ivory disguised as tiles was recovered and taken to the ZimParks headquarters for assay where it was confirmed to be ivory.

The recovered processed ivory is valued at $50 000.

A former lawmaker warned on Sunday that the current Charter change (Cha-cha) proposal may abolish the office of the vice president but would not disqualify President Rodrigo Duterte from running for president in 2022.

Under the PDP-Laban (Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan) Constitution, the office of the Vice President will be abolished by 2019 if they succeed in having the new Constitution ratified during the 2019 elections, Bayan Muna Chair and former Congressman Neri Colmenares pointed out in a statement.

Vice-President Leni Robredo will be ousted from her office long before her term ends in 2022, he said.

While PDP Laban may argue that they will not apply this to VP Robredo, this is not expressed in PDP Laban Constitution since they have refused to divulge their transitory provision, he added.

Colmenares said that even if Robredo is allowed to stay until 2022, she will be a lame-duck Vice President who is not even listed in the line of succession to Pres. Duterte.

In September last year, proponents of federalism from Dutertes PDP-Laban party have submitted their own draft of a Constitution that adopts a parliamentary-federal system of government.

In order to be assured of some sort of security, login links for quite some time contain the address https://, however ZTE have deliberately omitted the https protocol in favour of the more vulnerable http to gain access as administrator to their hardware.

In the above illustration the web browser warns that the connection is not secure i.e http://

The company TP-Link also has this not secure mode of login to their routers.

We therefore do not recommend the purchase or use of Huawei, TP-Link or ZTE.

Optus sells Huawei modems to Australia's 'consumers'.

Optus and Virgin also sell ZTE pocket wifi devices.

DHAKA/YANGON (Reuters) Hamid Hussain, a 71-year-old Rohingya Muslim farmer, first fled Myanmar for Bangladesh in 1992. He went home the next year under a repatriation deal between the two neighbors, only to repeat the journey last September when violence flared once more.

Officials from Myanmar and Bangladesh meet on Monday to discuss how to implement another deal, signed on Nov. 23, on the return of more than 650,000 Rohingya who have escaped an army crackdown since late August. Hussain is one of many who say they fear this settlement may be no more permanent than the last.

Bangladesh authorities had assured us that Myanmar would give us back our rights, that we would be able to live peacefully, said Hussain, who now lives in a makeshift refugee camp in southeast Bangladesh.

We went back but nothing changed. I will go back again only if our rights and safety are guaranteed forever.

Buddhist-majority Myanmar has for years denied Rohingya citizenship, freedom of movement and access to many basic services such as healthcare and education. They are considered illegal immigrants from mainly Muslim Bangladesh.

The authorities have said returnees could apply for citizenship if they can show their forebears have lived in Myanmar. But the latest deal like the one in 1992 does not guarantee citizenship and it is unclear how many would qualify.

Mondays meeting in Myanmars capital Naypyitaw will be the first for a joint working group set up to hammer out the details of the November repatriation agreement. The group is made up of civil servants from both countries.

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, authoritarian despots across the globe must be feeling pretty flattered by President Trump these days. Trumps latest efforts to distort and discredit special counsel Robert S. Mueller IIIs independent investigation into the Trump campaigns alleged collusion with Russia is straight out of the despots playbook.

In 2013, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey a democratically elected leader with a clearly authoritarian bent was facing credible allegations of corruption. A truly independent investigation could threaten Erdogans grip on power. As arrests mounted, it became clear that the prosecutorial net was sweeping closer to the prime minister himself.

Erdogans political machine sprang into action. Despite overwhelming evidence of corruption among his close associates, Erdogan claimed there was none. He dismissed the investigation as a dirty plot by law enforcement. His supporters spoke of a witch hunt launched by the Turkish deep state. Erdogan demanded that the investigation focus not on him but on his political opponent. His supporters began to agitate about the need to clean house in the judiciary and law enforcement. Soon thereafter, Erdogan fired those who were investigating him.

SEN. KAINE CALLS FOR FERC REHEARING ON MOUNTAIN VALLEY AND ATLANTIC COAST PIPELINES

From an Article by Joseph Abbate, Blue Virginia, January 5, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine sent a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requesting that it grant a rehearing request on the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) and the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). Kaines letter supports formal requests for rehearing made by a number of stakeholder groups and individual Virginians living along the proposed pipeline routes.

The Commission approved the MVP and ACP on 2-1 votes when two of the five commissioner slots were vacant. The split decisions were most unusual 98% of FERC orders in 2016 were unanimous. Given that the Commission now has a full complement of five members, there is a real concern about whether the divided rulings by a partial Commission fairly reflect the FERC position, Kaine said.

Kaine also asked for clarification on tolling orders, which some have contended is a way for FERC to freeze legal appeals while allowing construction to move forward. Highlighting the unusual circumstances surrounding the approval of the pipelines, Kaine requested that FERC invoke its rehearing option to ensure maximum public confidence that its final decision followed every step of the process to the fullest extent.

While the letter does not endorse or oppose the views of these petitioners on the substantive merits of the applications, Kaine believes that FERC needs to make these decisions following a full and fair process that accounts for technical analysis and public input.

FERC approved the MVP and ACP jointly on October 13, 2017, with two of the five commissioner seats vacant. The new commissioners were sworn in on November 29 and December 7, respectively. In 2016, 98% of FERC orders were unanimous.

The full text of the letter appears below and here.

Bartop Arcade Cabinet Build Skips the Kit "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

An arcade cabinet is one of those things that every gamer wants at home, but few ever get. Getting a real arcade cabinet is usually expensive, and building one yourself is no small feat. There are kits you can get now which help the process along, generally taking the form of pre-cut cabinet parts, but with them comes the quiet shame of kit-building. What if your friends found out you used a kit instead of designing it yourself? The drama is almost too much to think about.

Thats how [Bogdan Berg] felt about it, at least. Not content with just getting a pre-cut cabinet kit from eBay, he decided to design and build his own bartop arcade machine in just one week: fast enough for him to fit the whole thing into his Christmas vacation. We dont know what Christmas was like for his friends and family this year with him toiling away on this beautiful build the whole time, but we can confidently say his Christmas was awesome.

He designed the cabinet in Fusion 360, working around the limitation that the laser cutter he had access to had a work area of 24 inches by 18 inches. Some interesting design choices were made here, including going with a tab and slot construction method. While [Bogdan] admits that this aesthetic isnt always popular, he liked how...

Western media's propaganda war against Syrian army success "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The success of the current Syrian government operations against al-Qaeda in Idleb governorate can be measured by the volume of U.S. propaganda against it. A similar situation occurred when Aleppo was liberated from al-Qaeda's control. Certain U.S. media, (non-)government-organizations and politicians obviously prefer Takfiri al-Qaeda rule in Syria over control by the legitimated secular government. According to the various streams of such propaganda Idleb is crowded with hospitals, bakeries and little children who all get "barrel bombed" by the nefarious Iranians and Russians while no Takfiri militant can ever be seen. Chinas inexorable rise being helped by US retreat "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Ishaan Tharoor

But there are concerns about what a growing Chinese empire based on hard power means for the world

The first stop on French President Emmanuel Macrons trip to China last week was, curiously, not Beijing.

He arrived in the central Chinese city of Xian, a town fabled for its imperial tomb filled with terracotta warriors, as well as its role as the historic gateway to the Silk Road.

The President was deliberately pandering to Chinas sense of its past. Our relationship is anchored in time and, in my opinion, is based on civilisation, in the sense that France and China are two countries with very different cultures but which both have a universal calling, Mr Macron told the Chinese media.

They are two countries that have always been eager, across distances, to meet and recognise each other. Its for all these reasons that I wanted to start my state visit in Xian its a way to experience ancient China.

Mr Macron used the occasion to extend a hand to Beijing: What I came to tell you is that Europe is back, he said, signalling a contrast between the America First nationalism of President Donald Trump and the openness of Chinas other interlocutors in the West.

In turn, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed his desire to protect multilateralism and the pillars of the global economy.

The rhetoric is already a dramatic illustration of how far China has come.

ST ILLUSTRATION: CEL GULAPA

For decades, the ruling Communist Party has publicly groused about the century of humiliation endured by China at the hands of imperial European powers from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s.

Resentment over this experience of colonial bullying and coercion, subjugation and war remains a crucial plank of Chinese nationalism. But it is being superseded by another, more confident nationalist narrative, one based in reasserting Chinas historical primacy.

The dangers of fluoridated water. "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Why Our Drinking Water Is Killing Us
The dangers of fluoridated water.

"Water Fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay", according to wikipedia.org. Fluoride happens to be the chemical compound that we find in our toothpaste, processed foods and in our public water supply. Fluoridation became an official policy of the U.S. Public Health Service in 1951 and by 1960, water fluoridation had became widely used in the United States, reaching about 50 million people. According Dr. Joseph Mercola, "If fluoride is really the panacea for dental disease that it's been portrayed as, then why is that the United States is one of the only developed countries that fluoridates their citizen's drinking water?" Dr. Mercola continues to say, "It's not because the other countries aren't aware of fluoride's supposed 'miracle' powers for your teeth..it's because they fully realize that adding a known poison to your population's water supply is probably not a good idea."

Obviously, fluoride isn't the beneficial product that citizens of the United States have been led to believe. Naturally, many people trust in their government and don't believe a chemical that is harmful to people would be distributed into the general population. However, it's one thing to be unaware of the poison you are putting into your body, but it's completely different to be aware of this poison and not take action. According to mercola.com, "Many assume consuming fluoride is only an issue that involves your dental health." But according to a 500 scientific page review, fluoride is an endocrine disruptor that can affect your bones, brain, thyroid gland, pineal gland and even your blood sugar levels.

So a chemical compound that was just intended to prevent tooth decay has many extremely harsh side effects. I remember when I was a kid, my mother always told me not to ever swallow toothpaste because I could get very sick. Back then, I didn't understand the consequences with consuming fluoride.

The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) reported: "Fluorosilicic acid is the most contaminated chemical added to public water supplies, and many impose additional risks to those presented by natural fluorides. These risks include a possible cancer hazard from the acid's elevated arsenic content and a possible neurotoxic hazard from the acid's ability -under some conditions -to increase the erosion of lead from old pipes." So fluorosilicic acid can certainly be labeled a great treat to humankind. Simply put, this chemical can lead to cancer and provides toxins to the brain. The question is, why is something so harmful still in our drinking water? Energyfanatics.com states, "Fluorisilic acid is a waste product of phosphate fertilizer industry and is heavily contaminated with toxins and heavy metals (including the cancerous arsenic, lead and cadmium) and radi...

(Manish Swarup/Associated Press)

The Associated Press

BANGKOK Myanmars civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has called the militarys investigation into the deaths of Rohingya Muslims found in a mass grave a positive indication, state media reported Saturday.

The military, which has been accused of indiscriminate killings, rape and burning of Rohingya villages, acknowledged that security forces and villagers were responsible for the deaths of 10 people found in a mass grave in December. It said the 10 were Bengali terrorists who had threatened villagers, but that the military would take action against those who broke the rules of engagement.

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar does not acknowledge Royingya as a minority group even though they have lived in the country for generations. It says theyre immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. Since August, military operations have driven more than 650,000 Rohingya into refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh.

It is a positive indication that we are taking the steps to be responsible, Suu Kyi said, according to a report in the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper. However, some may worry. But I believe that our investigation will prevent such things from happening again.

Suu Kyi made the comments Friday during a joint news conference with Japans foreign minister. Suu Kyi is Myanmars foreign minister as well as the governments civilian leader though the military has a final say in security matters.

Neither the military nor Suu Kyi has said what action will be taken against those responsible for the deaths linked to the mass grave in Rakhine state, where most of the Rohingya live.

Volcanic ash triggers evacuation in Philippines with 'hazardous eruptions' feared "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The Mayon volcano in the Philippines has spewed ash several times over the weekend, forcing authorities to evacuate two villages in its vicinity and raise the threat level, warning of potential "hazardous magmatic eruptions." "The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the six kilometer (3.7 mile) radius Permanent Danger Zone to minimize risks from sudden explosions, rockfall and landslides," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced on Sunday. The volcano, located in Albay province of central Philippines, first spewed ash on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday morning. Since the eruptions, a "faint crater glow" has been observed, while the "rockfall events have been intermittently recorded and are continuing," the agency added. The threat level was raised to level 2, with Phivolcs warning the volcanic activity is "probably of magmatic origin, which could lead to more phreatic eruptions or eventually to hazardous magmatic eruptions." Residents of at least two villages within the six kilometer radius around the volcano have already been evacuated, but some people still remain in the danger zone, hoping the threat is not yet "critical." We have not reached the critical level," said the head of the Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Cedric Daep, as cited by Reuters. "Alert level 3 is what we consider critical, 4 is when eruption is imminent, and 5 is eruption in progress."

Okinawa and the Secret to Longevity (Sponsored Post) "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

While there are no official records of the undying (yet), more people live beyond 100 years of age in Japans Okinawa Prefecture than anywhere else in the world. And while they may have tapped and plumbed the fountain of youth somewhere in the hundreds of islands, the key to longevity may be more simple.

Life medicine, or what the locals call nuchigusui, is an Okinawan precept for healthy living. By focusing everyday practices on easing the mind, satisfying the spirit and looking after the body, the locals have inhabited a philosophy that seems to be working pretty well.

It all comes down to fresh food, stress-free living and a connection with nature that is endemic to Japanese culture and way of life. For thousands of years, the rich beauty of the islands has been conserved, and if you look at the stars at night amidst almost no light pollution you can catch a glimpse into ancient utopian times.

Whether its long stretches of white sand beaches, rare blue coral reef or dense jungles, 20 per cent of the Okinawa Prefecture is national park. The islands are also incredibly fertile, and provide a habitat for dugongs, turtles, rare cats and thousands of other animals that feed off its rich resources.

Food itself is the essence of nuchigusui. Eating is revered as medicine; vitality is passed from the cook to the customer. The island chain has countless wholesome dishes that are native to the region, from delicious teas to rich sobas, all of which aim to nourish and rejuvenate.

Okinawa might be the only place youll ever visit where the more time you spend, the more time you earn on Earth, and even if you dont find the secret to immortality, youll walk away feeling pretty bloody relaxed.

Check this vid out to see what we mean.

The Supreme Court dissolved the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) in November at the request of the government of long serving Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Party leader Kem Sokha was arrested in September and is accused of trying to overthrow the government with American help and of espionage charges he denies and says are politically motivated ahead of a general election in July.

Former CNRP leader Sam Rainsy said in a tweet on Sunday that the Cambodia National Rescue Movement (CNRM), launched on Saturday, would provide a new structure that nobody can harm or dissolve.

The CNRM can launch appeals to the people to organize peaceful protests, to workers to go on strike and to the armed forces to side with the people, Sam Rainsy tweeted, along with a statement.

Sam Rainsy, a former CNRP leader who lives in exile in France, did not say it was calling for any protests at this point. It was not immediately clear how widespread the backing for the new movement was among CNRP members.

According to the statement, the CNRMs members include Sam Rainsy, his wife Saumura Tioulong and deputy presidents of the now dissolved CNRP, Eng Chhai Eang and Mu Sochua.

We invite our compatriots from all walks of life, regardless of their political affiliation, to join the CNRM in order to protect the will of the Cambodian people through free, fair and inclusive elections, the statement said.

They said in the statement that they also demand the release of Kem Sokha and other politician prisoners of conscience.....

Restricting Eating Times Boosts Quality of Life in Neurodegenerative Disease "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Neurodegenerative diseases affect millions of Americans, especially those who are elderly or approaching old age. These diseases can cause rapid decline and loss of both one's well-being and one's ability to care for oneself. Although there are several treatments that can improve or extend the lives of people living with neurodegenerative disease, there currently are no cures. As a result, most treatments are focused on slowing disease progression and improving quality of life in the meantime. New studies have found that restricting eating times may be an effective way to improve quality of life for women with these diseases. Living With Neurodegenerative Disease Neurodegenerative diseases are, by definition, diseases that include a progressive loss of brain function. This group of disease includes diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Although the pathophysiology of these diseases can differ, they all share a few core characteristics. People with these diseases gradually lose cognition, memory, and the ability to care for themselves, causing a sharp decline in quality of life. Many people are left unable to work, perform hobbies, perform personal activities of daily living and keep a healthy social life.

Transition Towns Offer Hope for the Future "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Years Eve on record. Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against. Bundle up!
 Donald J. Trump

Reading tweets like this from President Trump incites a mixture of humour and sadness in me.  I cant even tell which sentiment is stronger at this point.  Since his exiting the US from the Paris Agreement last year it is difficult to take this person seriously about any utterance he makes on the environment, to include his suspicion that global warming is a theory advanced by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.  The entire planet is suffering previously undocumented shifts in temperature that have been recorded since 1880 and we are facing a pollution crisis that has resulted in people in certain cities around the planet having to don face masks to leave their homes.  And just yesterday Trump announces that he feel[s] strongly about the environment.

According to The Ocean Cleanup, eight million tons of plastics enter the oceans every year, most of which has resulted in FIVE giant garbage patches (literally vortexes of pure garbage) floating in major bodies of water.  And I write five even though this number is relative given that just last summer another patch in the Pacific was found that is larger than Mexico and scientists are now grouping them together as singular, but larger, garbage patches such that now we have one spanning from off the coast of California all the way across the Pacific Ocean the the coast of Japan. Even shipping routes in smaller bodies of water, such as the North Sea.  And then there is the tragedy of marine life which is under threat from oxygen depletion, the ablation of ice sheets, the melting of massive icebergs, and the fact that...

The "Deadly Breast Cancer Gene" Is A Myth, Lancet Study Confirms "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

A powerful new Lancet study reveals that the so-called breast cancer susceptibility genes -- BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 -- do not, in fact, cause breast cancer. Jolie's prophylactic mastectomy, for instance, was for naught. A new Lancet Oncology study, reported widely in the mainstream media, confirms that the so-called "breast cancer genes," i.e. BRCA1/2, do not have the power to determine breast cancer survival outcomes, as widely believed by the medical profession. The study titled, "Germline BRCA mutation and outcome in young-onset breast cancer (POSH): a prospective cohort study," found, "[There is] no significant difference in overall survival or distant disease-free survival between patients carrying a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation and patients without these mutations after a diagnosis of breast cancer."

Britains National Health Service: Three million people at high risk of flu have not yet been vaccinated flu vaccine in short supply "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By Henry Bodkin

More than three million people at high risk of flu have not yet been vaccinated despite the biggest wave of public fear since swine flu in 2009, health chiefs have said.

A letter sent to every GP practice in England warns they have just two weeks left in which to vaccinate patients against this winters virulent outbreak, which has already claimed 85 lives and is threatening to become an epidemic.

It comes amid concerns large numbers of pregnant women and young adults with asthma are in particular danger because of failure to take up the jab.

Temperatures are set to plummet over the next few days with bookmakers cutting the odds of this winter ending up the coldest on record to 2-1, threatening to exacerbate the problem.

Yesterday The Daily Telegraph revealed patients across the country were being turned away from high street chemists which had run out of the flu vaccine due to a late surge

The 15 Most Common Anti-Vegan Arguments "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

BY SOFO ARCHON

anti-vegan

If you love animals, why do you kill them?

Thats a question most people dont seem to ever contemplate on.

Now, you might argue that you dont kill the animals yourself, but the reality is that if youre eating them, youre indirectly contributing to their death. In other words, to kill them with your own hands or to let someone else kill them for you is in essence one and the same thing.

I admit, I used to be like you. I would eat animals and their byproducts for almost every single day of my life, without really caring about how my eating habits affected other sentient beings. However, at some point I realized how much suffering was inflicted upon animals because of my dietary choices.

Having read some books on nutrition, I was aware that scientific evidence clearly shows humans can be healthy on a plant-based diet. So I thought: If I dont need to feed on animals, why do I keep on eating them and hence unnecessarily cause suffering and death to hundreds of sentient beings every year?

Soon afterwards, I decided to adopt a vegetarian diet. That is, I ditched meat and fish from my diet, but Id still eat dairy, eggs, and honey on a regular basis.

I was seventeen at the time, and the reaction from my friends and family for my decision wasnt what youd call encouraging. They actually thought I acted foolishly and that I would ruin my health if I didnt change my mind and start eating animals again.

From where are you going to get your protein? Certainly not from plants!

How about omega 3s? Fish is essential for a healthy diet!

These and other objections were put forward by them to convince me to go back to eating an omnivorous diet. But I didnt care. I was feeling healthy, and knew in my heart that I was doing the right thing.

Little did I know that vegetarianism does shit for the animals.

Fast forward nine years. I was doing some research on factory farming, during which I came across some videos showing footage of the horrors that take place in the dairy and egg industries. What I saw left me speechless. To my surprise, I found out that th...

Germany: New Grand Coalition Not a Sure Thing as Saxony-Anhalt votes against its own leaders "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

A coalition with Angela Merkels conservatives? No thanks! Thats how the regional SPD conference in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt voted, against its own leaders. Sabine Kinkartz reports from Wernigerode.

When German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel arrived at Wernigerodes congress center to attend the annual conference of Saxony-Anhalts Social Democratic Party (SPD) on Saturday, the youth branch of the party had already made its position clear. Grand coalition, no thanks! was the title of a two-page paper calling on the conference to officially oppose a new coalition with Angela Merkels Christian Democrats (CDU) and Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU).

Image result for 3No GroKo, Germany, photos

The fact that Saturdays conference did indeed decide against such a coalition does not have a binding effect, because the final decision will be taken at a national SPD conference on January 21. But it does send a clear signal to the entire party.

Gabriels mission was clear: He thinks the outcome of exploratory coalition talks between the three parties, which have just been concluded in Berlin, was a good one, and he wanted to gain support for it. The agreements made at the talks were collated in a 28-page document, copies of which were hastily distributed among the 120 delegates attending Saxony-Anhalts SPD party conference. And unlike Gabriel, many, it seems, were disappointed.

Anne Fiebig heads the partys youth organization, the so-called Juso, in Halle (Saale) and complained that many decisions made at the last party conference were simply ignored. She said the document does not afford any importance to social justice at all. Fiebig sported a large red button-shaped badge reading #NoGroKo, indicating her opposition to yet another grand coalition (GRosse KOalition or GroKo in German).

Ol' Sloppy Steve Bannon is out of another job. He had planned to go back to Breitbart "News." In his megalomaniacal mind, he thought they would greet him with flowers. But, it was not to be. The multi-billionaire Mercer family, the same folks who have financially back Senor Trumpanzee's political career have pulled the plug on him. Its always dangerous to make predictions about the Middle East.

After all, few experts foresaw Anwar al-Sadats trip to Jerusalem in 1977, which led to the first peace treaty between Israel and an Arab state, nor did they predict the Iranian Revolution of 1978-79 or the Arab uprisings of 2010-11. Having taught and written about the Middle East for three decades, however, I feel confident in making the following forecast for the region in 2018.

Israeli Army Confirms Gaza Attack Destroyed Hamas Cross-border Tunnel "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Army says the tunnel, which passed under Kerem Shalom border crossing and extended into Egyptian territory, was designed to smuggle weapons and militants for attacks

The planes that hit targets along Israels border with Gaza late Saturday night destroyed an attack tunnel, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

To really understand the Middle East subscribe to Haaretz

According to the Israeli army, the tunnel passed under the Kerem Shalom border crossing, near the Egyptian border. The IDF said it also extended into Egyptian territory. We have not encountered a tunnel like that before, IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said.

A video released by the IDF on Twitter showing the location of the attack tunnel.

A video from the IDF Twitter account

https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.834738

In contrast to Hamas claims that the tunnel was used for smuggling goods, the IDF unequivocally stated that it was an attack tunnel used to smuggle in weapons, terrorists and other operatives into Israel in order to carry out terror attacks.

The Kerem Shalom crossing is the main entryway of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The army said that it views Hamas as responsible for what happens in Gaza. We have no intention of escalating the situation, but we are prepared for every scenario, it said.

The military said in a statement that the tunnel extended from the Palestinian town of Rafah, staring about 900 meters west of the Israeli border, and was dug below the border crossing and under pipelines used to transport natural gas and fuel. It reached 180 meters into Israeli territory.

On Saturday evening the army informed the Palestinians that it would temporarily close the Kerem Shalom crossing for all traffic starting Sunday morning. The army said the decision, which is unusual, was reached in accordance with current assessments.

This is a blatant violation of Israeli sovereignty, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said following the strike. The destruction of the network of attack tunnels is an essential part of our policy of systematically harming Hamas strategic capabilities.

Why Don't Electric Cars Look Like the Future? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Sure looks a lot like your father's Oldsmobile...

Electric cars were supposed to be the future or at least look like it. So now they're here, why do they still look like ordinary petrol and diesel cars and not dazzling props from a science fiction film.

Before they hit the market and became relatively mainstream, many imagined (or at least, hoped) that electric cars would resemble the Light Runner from Tron: Legacy. After all, without the need for an internal combustion engine, an exhaust system and a fuel tank, electric car designers should have the creative freedom to rip up the rule book and create some truly eye-catching vehicles.

But this hasn't really happened. Park a Renault Zoe next to a Renault Clio, for example, and compare the two. While there are subtle differences and styling cues that suggest the Zoe is electric and the Clio isn't, the overall body form is strikingly similar. In fact, the Zoe is assembled on the same production line as the Clio and Nissan Micra.

Russia's Efforts to Divide Us Are Not New "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In his book Spymaster: My Thirty-two Years in Intelligence and Espionage Against the West, former KGB head of foreign counterintelligence Oleg Kalugin disclosed some of the fake news that the Russians put into Americas national discourse during the directorship of Yuri Andropov:

Under Andropov the disinformation branch of the KGB flourished. For both domestic and external consumption, it concocted stories to deceive, confuse, and influence targeted audiences. It conducted operations to weaken Soviet adversaries and to undermine the internal stability and foreign policies of the Western world in order to facilitate favorable conditions for the eventual triumph of Communism.

The CIA ousted President Nixon; the CIA arranged the 1978 mass suicide and murder of more than nine hundred people of the Jonestown cult; the U.S. was developing an ethnic weapon that would kill blacks and spare whites; the CIA was behind the assassinations of Olof Palme in Sweden, Indira Gandhi in India, and Aldo Moro in Italy, and an attempt on the popes life; the U.S. military planned to use tactical nuclear weapons in Italy in case the left parties came to power; U.S. Army scientists developed the AIDS virus; Americans steal foreign babies to use their organs for transplant these and hundreds of other faked stories hit the front pages of the world media at one time or another. And though Andropov died in 1984, his legacy and that of his KGB predecessors in the area of psychological warfare eventually developed into practical guidelines for the KGB and its friends and allies across the world.

He also wrote about more sinister active measures.

One of our dirty tricks involved a nasty letter-writing campaign against African diplomats at the United Nations an idea cooked up by KGB headquarters in Moscow and approved by the Communist Party Central Committee. Our KGB staff, using new typewriters and wearing gloves so as not to leave fingerprints, typed up hundreds of anonymous hate letters and sent them to dozens of African missions. The letters, purportedly from white supremacists as well as average Americans, were filled with virulent racist diatribes. The African diplomats publicized some of the letters as examples of the racism still rampant in America, and members of the American and foreign...

In two other tweets he expressed his view that the immigration deal under discussion would force America to accept large numbers of people from high crime countries which are doing badly. And, then, finally, he tried to contextualize his shithole remarks to make them less personal to the people of Haiti.

So, saying Haiti is a shithole is not derogatory? Saying a whole continent is a shithole is not derogatory?

Well 99% of it, Im certain Ive missed something.

While theres no doubting the eminence of the panel of four, David Attenborough, Richard Dawkins, Jane Goodall, and Richard Leaky (of whom I hadnt really heard of much before), I thought they fell far short of understanding the issues no, predicaments we are facing.  None of them seem to know much about energy, or the monetary system, with the fat cat lookalike, that Leaky fellow I didnt know much about, really displaying his ignorance of nuclear energy.

Money is the problem after all, which thankfully Attenborough points out to him, even if its just as an aside.  I love Jane Goodall to bits (and her chimps theres a wonderful clip of a couple with a Jack in the Box), but shes frankly a bit nave.  Dawkins is interesting, as always, but has no grasp of the financial and energy problems at all, in fact says nothing whatever about it.  Attenborough is the best informed of all, he has after all seen how the planet has changed in the past 60 years more than anyone else, and at least he realises we are way overpopulated..  at the end, they all roll around in hopium. Id love to know what DTM followers think

That this video has only had 187,634 views as I type says it all.  Does anybody care?

Zaluuokhin by Fin DAC in Adelaide "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

After his recent trip to New Zealand, Fin DAC made the short hop across the water to Australia where he hopes to make a few stops and paint a number of murals.

The first of those stops is a return to the location of one of his most famous works. His Shinka piece  painted in Adelaide in Jan 2016 was subsequently featured on an Aus Post Street Art Stamp collection so you could say he has a lot to live up to this time around.

Zaluuokhin is the result of 3 days work and is another gem to add to his Hidden Beauty series of works.

As has been a pattern with quite a few of his more recent works, Fin once again has tried to incorporate actual wall/building features into the work. Check the night time photo where those ornaments, hanging from the Models head, light up.

As always with these pieces, the artist hasnt divulged the exact location but in his own words Its somewhere in the CBD.
