The role of trust in security: Building relationships with management and employees "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Massive data breaches have become the new reality, and they confirm that one of the biggest challenges companies face when it comes to security: a companys biggest shortcomings are often not apparent until data breaches or other emergencies occur. As a result, adequately preparing for the worst and getting employees at every level of the company to give security the attention that it needs remain the key priorities for chief security officers. Belize imposes offshore oil moratorium to protect reefs "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

The government of Belize halted all exploration for oil in its territorial waters from Dec. 29, becoming one of the first developing countries to turn away from oil in favor of protecting the ocean environment. This is truly The Peoples Law, Janelle Chanona, vice president of the NGO Oceana in Belize, said in a report by teleSUR. Belizeans have remained steadfast in their opposition to offshore oil since they became aware that marine assets were at risk of irreversible damage from the offshore oil industry. That opposition began in earnest when the government shared its plans for oil exploration near the Belize Barrier Reef. At that point, WWF started a campaign during which 450,000 people emailed the government about offshore drilling, according to an article at Quartz. Belize is a small country making a mighty commitment to putting the environment first, Nadia Bood, a WWF reef scientist, said in the Quartz article. A stingray in Belize. Photo by Rhett A. The 300-kilometer (186-mile) stretch of coral in the Caribbean Sea is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, second in size only to Australias Great Barrier Reef. It is home to turtles, crocodiles and manatees among the roughly 1,400 species found in Belizes reefs. Such wildlife is a huge draw for tourists, who contribute about 10 percent of the countrys gross domestic product, according to Quartz. The Guardian reports that 50 percent of Belizes

Violence Against Dalits in Maharashtra Is Not New, but Dalit Reaction to It Is Changing "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Horowitz, perhaps the most feared man in Washington by the swamp dwellers, that is was appointed by President Obama in April of 2012. Horowitz announced exactly one year ago that the Inspector Generals office would examine evidence related to allegations of misconduct by then FBI Director James Comey regarding his handling of Hillary Clintons email practices, and whether Justice Department employees leaked information improperly during the run up to the 2016 presidential election. FBI Baffled by Encryption, 1978 "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

- PrepareWithBill - Food Storage You Can Depend On. 888-756-8727 https://preparewith.com/Bill.Still Good evening, Im still reporting on: FBI Baffled by Encryption, 1978 Synopsis: New FBI Director Christopher Wray, speaking on Tuesday at a cyber-security conference in New York, said that powerful encryption tools now becoming widely available are frustrating his agency. Surprise, surprise; last year, the FBI was unable to access data from 7800 devices thats over 50% - despite having legal authority to do so i.e. a legitimate warrant from a real judge. Wray warned the audience of cyber-security experts from around the world: This is an urgent public safety issue. [The solution] is not so clear cut. The FBI has been trying to require manufacturers to provide backdoors into their devices for law enforcement who obtain a warrant. However, the public is demanding more security from the government, not less, especially in light of the fact that the latest batch of cyber criminals were a literal cabal within both the FBI and Justice Department to attack the current President and help cover the crimes of his opponent and her husband, a past president. Just a few months ago some wondered if the FBI was not playing a deceitful game by pretending not to be able to break through current encryption techniques. However, it has recently come to light that utilizing the best commercially-available security practices can stop government snooping cold even one level of technology above that level currently available to the FBI. Yes, this is a huge problem for law enforcement, but one that is self-generated. Therefore, this is an impossible time for Mr. Wray to effectively make this case due to his own Bureaus recent and ongoing illegal activities. Wray could, at any moment, throw open the doors of complete transparency to the FBIs involvement with the Clinton Crime Cabal. Instead, he has chosen to continue to use the immense power of the Bureau to stonewall Congressional investigations and obstruct justice at every step of the way. Letter from Charlottesville to Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

By David Swanson, January 15, 2017, Lets Try Democracy.

Nazi rallies in the news in recent years have most prominently been held here in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, and in Ukraine. I want to send thoughts of solidarity to those in Ukraine resisting fascism. And I want to let you know that some of us are urging our government in Washington, D.C., to stop supporting fascism both in the United States and in Ukraine. In addition, we are pointing to the examples being set by so many shithole countries around the world that are 100% free of fascist rallies.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Brandenberg v. Ohio in 1969 that advocacy directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action . . . likely to incite or produce such action is not protected by the First Amendment. Sheriff Shithole has said these things: If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them. I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. Maybe he should have been roughed up, because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing. See, in the good old days this doesnt happen, because they used to treat them very, very rough. And when they protested once, you know, they would not do it again so easily. You know what I hate? Theres a guy, totally disruptive, throwing punches, were not allowed to punch back anymore. I love the old daysyou know what they used to do to guys like that when they were in a place like this? Theyd be carried out on a stretcher, folks. See the first group, I was nice. Oh, take your time. The second group, I was pretty nice. The third group, Ill be a little more violent. And the fourth group, Ill say get the hell out of here! Id like to punch him in the face, I tell ya. You see, in the good old days, law enforcement acted a lot quicker than this. A lot quicker. In the good old days, theyd rip him out of that seat so fast but today, everybodys politically correct. He was swinging, he was hitting people, and the audience hit back. Thats what we need more of.

Numerous incidents of violence followed these comments. John Franklin McGraw punched a man in the face at a Trump event, and...

Venezuelas Mining Arc boom sweeps up Indigenous people and cultures "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

An illegal miner carries a traditional gold pan, called a batea in the Las Cristinas mine in Bolvar state. Photo by Jorge Benezra This story is one in a series of Mongabay articles about Venezuelas Arco Minero, produced in partnership with InfoAmazonia which has launched an in-depth multimedia platform called Digging Deeper into the Mining Arc exclusively highlighting Venezuelas mining boom. LAS CLARITAS, Venezuela They gather in the hundreds, or maybe even thousands, in the early morning, their numbers perhaps tenfold the population of the town itself. Groups of miners, carrying pickaxes and gold pans, meet along the chaotic roads to catch rides by any mode of transport possible, headed to the illegal gold mines that lie outside the village. Some of these artisanal miners, maneuvering around honking cars and children hawking contraband fuel, come in desperation from Venezuelas urban centers. But among the dirt-poor miners in their ragged clothes and muddy boots, many indigenous faces also stand out. The nations failed petro-economy, disastrous governmental policies and a nonexistent job market have brought them all to Las Claritas and its surrounding mines to eke out a hardscrabble living and to feed their hungry families. This remote settlement has been transformed by the sudden rush to extract and process minerals. New arrivals find not a quiet rainforest locale, but a criminal underworld with numerous brothels, gang-controlled mines and an ongoing malaria epidemic. Opportunities are few here, and risk to life and limb are many. Men working a clandestine gold mine

Blockchain Bonds? Struggling German Telco Joins Bandwagon "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

But to no avail for its crushed shares.

Telefonica Deutschland, the struggling German subsidiary of the struggling Spanish telecom giant Telefonica S.A., announced that it issued 200 million of bonds, including a small tranche of undisclosed size, maturing in about one year, with blockchain technology:

For the first time, the transaction will demonstrate the capabilities of the Blockchain technology in combination with a traditional financing process and a larger number of investors. With the innovative use of this digital technology, all participants are promoting the development of more efficient and transparent processes in the German economy.

The company lost 178 million in the first three quarters in 2017 after losing 1.76 billion in 2016. Its shares the portion that is publicly traded  at 4.10, are down 30% since October 2015. The shares of its Spanish parent, Telefonica S.A., at 8.20, are down 40% over the same period.

The company could certainly do with attracting more shareholder interest.

The company enthused that blockchain technology allows for direct and secure financial transactions in real time by blocks of data that are stored and encrypted on multiple servers. It hopes that the new technology will lower servicing costs and diversify its financing strategy.

But if the plan was to levitate the firms shares by adding blockchain to the press release, it hasnt quite worked. Telefonica Deutschlands shares continue to decline, and the Spanish parent saw its shares close on Friday at the same level as three days ago. It cant have helped that on the same morning, Spains second biggest bank, BBVA, reported that it booked a capital loss of 1.12 billion on its 6.7% stake in Telefonica SA for 2017 over 300 million more than the bank had provisioned for. Not exactly good PR

The Iceman Checks Out, Scientifically "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Wim Hof first caught the attention of scientists when he proved he was able to use meditation to stay submerged in ice for 1 hour and 53 minutes without his core body temperature changing. Since then, he's climbed Mount Everest in his shorts, resisted altitude sickness, completed a marathon in the Namib Desert with no water and proven under a laboratory setting that he's able to influence his autonomic nervous system and immune system at will.

Almost everything Wim has done was previously thought to be impossible - but he's not a freak of nature.

To demonstrate that any human can learn his methods, Wim offered to teach Matt Shea and Daisy-May Hudson to climb a freezing cold mountain in their shorts without getting cold.

3 Things You Learned In Elementary School "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Illustrative Picture. (Photo: Creative Commons/Johannes Thiel)Illustrative Picture. (Photo: Creative Commons/Johannes Thiel)

Elementary school! Our memories include recess, minimal work and crayons. But there were some vital lessons you learned in that place. Yet, in all the hustle and bustle of adult life, you may have forgotten some of the most important lessons.

Heres a reminder, and what those lessons mean for the struggle against radical Islam.

1.No Take-sie Back-sies

This is one of the most important life lessons of all. You cant take anything back. No one can. For better or worse, Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq, Osama Bin Laden ordered the terror attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11 and Hillary Clinton failed to reinforce the embassy in Benghazi.

The past cannot be changed just because we dont like something that happened. We have to come to terms with the reality of the world and move forward proactively, not waste time arguing about whether or not the current instability in Pakistan is really the fault of British imperialists who have been dead for nearly a 100 years.

Accepting what has happened is the first step to deciding how you want to react to it.

2.Finders Keepers Losers Weepers

One of the more brutal facts of life, this one underscores the unfairness of the world. The Gulf States have the oil and therefore they have the money. They found it and they kept it. The fact they have used that money (in part) to fund extremism worldwide is what they chose to do with it.

The same goes for the current borders of countries. Pretty much every state on the planet has committed war crimes at least once. The breakup of the Ottoman Empire was a complete mess that saw many groups disenfranchised.

But today it doesnt necessarily make sense to alter national borders and radically restructu...

"The Fascinating Psychology of Blowoff Tops" "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

"The Fascinating Psychology of Blowoff Tops"
by Charles Hugh Smith

"Central banks have guaranteed a bubble collapse is the only possible output of the system they've created. The psychology of blowoff tops in asset bubbles is fascinating: let's start with the first requirement of a move qualifying as a blowoff top, which is the vast majority of participants deny the move is a blowoff top.
Exhibit 1: a chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJ-30):
Is there any other description of this parabolic ascent other than "blowoff top" that isn't absurdly misleading? Can anyone claim this is just a typical Bull market? There is nothing even remotely typical about the record RSI (relative strength index), record Bull-Bear ratio, and so on, especially after a near-record run of 9 years.

The few who do grudgingly acknowledge this parabolic move might be a blowoff top are positive that it has many more months to run. This is the second requirement of qualifying as a blowoff top: the widespread confidence that the Bull advance has years more to run, and if not years, then many months.

Ankara has slammed the plan to create a 30,000-strong force from the Kurdish-dominated SDF militias on its border with Syria, accusing its NATO ally of presenting its "unilateral" move as a joint decision of the US-led coalition. The Turkish government perceives the so-called Syrian Border Force, that may be stationed along the Kurdish-controlled parts of the Syrian border with Iraq and Turkey, as well as in the Euphrates River Valley, as a threat to its national security, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in the statement on Sunday. "Turkey is determined to eliminate any threats against it, and has all possibilities to do this," it said, denouncing what it called "the persistence of the United State in this erroneous approach" of cooperating with the Kurdish militias.

Terab Project Allows Bitcoin Cash to Scale to one Terabyte Blocks "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Forcing cryptocurrencies to scale will always remain a very troublesome topic by the look of things. Bitcoin shows such issues can effectively cripple a network with relative ease. Project Terab, an open source initiative, wants to make sure Bitcoin Cash goes in a different direction. Right now, the network can accommodate blocks of up to 8MB in size. With Terab, the goal is to ensure one terabyte blocks become a possibility for the future. An interesting concept, but the bandwidth requirements shouldnt be underestimated either.

Looking to the future is always important in the world of cryptocurrecy development. It is always better to prepare for potential issues rather than patch things up later on. The Bitcoin network has learned this lesson the hard way. After many years of bickering, the network now has a scaling solution few service providers are willing to use. Moreover, there is the Bitcoin Cash altcoin which seemingly has no scaling issues as of right now. Several initiatives are underway to further increase the BCH block size in the coming years.

Project Terab and one Terabyte Blocks

One of these scaling initiatives is known as project Terab. Its an open source initiative focusing mainly on Bitcoin Cashs technical issues. More specifically, the team aims to introduce BCH blocks of one terabyte in the future. It is an astonishingly high number, but an interesting prospect nonetheless. Bringing such blocks to the network will be a rather big challenge, though. With such blocks, Terab would also allow Bitcoin Cash to process 7 million transactions per second.

It is evident these goals are very ambitious. Achieving such major milestones may not even be feasible in the long run. At the same time, in theory, nothing prevents a blockchain from scaling to such levels. The main problem is the terabyte blocks. Very few people have the infrastructure and bandwidth to process such blocks on a regular basis. Surprisingly, it seems unlikely such block sizes would be feasible for the regular Bitcoin blockchain. It seems the introduction of SegWit has made on-chain scaling a lot more difficult in terms of sheer block size increases.

Whether or not Terab will become a success, remains to be determined. The open source initiative certainly introduces some new opportuniti...

Poll Results: Should We Give Medical Treatment to Jihadis? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

A wounded soldier in Iraq awaits evacuation and treatmentA wounded soldier in Iraq awaits evacuation and treatment (Illustrative photo: AHMAD AL-RUBAYE/AFP/Getty Images)

Recently, we reported on the decision by Austrias interior ministry to refuse entry to a suspected ISIS fighter from Georgia who required emergency surgery. The 19-year-old fighter, who was suspected to be connected to Chechen jihadi kingpin Akmad Chatayev, was shot in the head in a special forces operation and was in a coma.

Citing security concerns as the primary reason, the ministry also said the fighters entrance to Austria would increase the risk of a possible rescue or a blackmail attempt.

We then polled our readers about whether or not they agreed with Austrias decision. Here are the results of the poll:

  • 89.7 percent said, Yes, why should resources go to people who want to kill us?
  • 10.3 percent said, No, refusing treatment poses serious questions about medical ethics and opens the way to a slippery slope of government control over medical treatment.

Here is a sample of some of the many comments we received:

Once the terrorist is healed, he will return and continue to kill us. So this is a self defense.

[The terrorists] want to destroy our way of life. They want to destroy other religions. They choose theirr way and then want their enemy to save you. Sorry

If you treat an enemy combatant like this, their way of thinking still remains the same. Why then would I want treat such a person?

The 19-year-old should be treated medially and then put on trial for his crimes. I would in no way defend ISIS, but it is a tough question. As an individual I would want to treat this person as I would like to be treated if I was in his shoes. The only way to change people is by changing their hearts. Love is the greatest force that can overcome evil. This is what this young man needs to experience in order to have his heart chan...

Prayer and Meditation for Tuesday, January 16, 2018 "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Tuesday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 312

Reading 1 1 SM 16:1-13

The LORD said to Samuel:
How long will you grieve for Saul,
whom I have rejected as king of Israel?
Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way.
I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem,
for I have chosen my king from among his sons.
But Samuel replied:
How can I go?
Saul will hear of it and kill me.
To this the LORD answered:
Take a heifer along and say,
I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.
Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I myself will tell you what to do;
you are to anoint for me the one I point out to you.

Samuel did as the LORD had commanded him.
When he entered Bethlehem,
the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and inquired,
Is your visit peaceful, O seer?
He replied:
Yes! I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.
So cleanse yourselves and join me today for the banquet.
He also had Jesse and his sons cleanse themselves
and invited them to the sacrifice.
As they came, he looked at Eliab and thought,
Surely the LORDs anointed is here before him.
But the LORD said to Samuel:
Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature,
because I have rejected him.
Not as man sees does God see,
because he sees the appearance
but the LORD looks into the heart.
Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him before Samuel,
who said, The LORD has not chosen him.
Next Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said,
The LORD has not chosen this one either.
In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel,
but Samuel said to Jesse,
The LORD has not chosen any one of these.
Then Samuel asked Jesse,
Are these all the sons you have?
Jesse replied,

A Forgotten Memorial That Gives Indian Soldiers of Yore Their Due "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

We have an obligation to those whose valour and heroism deserves recognition even if they fought and died as part of a war that was not Indias.

Cavalry officers have always felt that brief surge of extra pride in the month of November, when traffic on Delhis busy Teen Murti roundabout pauses, halts and gapes at them in awe as they pay homage at the famed Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade Memorial in their ceremonial finery.

This memorial commemorates the valour of soldiers of princely armies namely Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers which formed part of the famed 15 Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade. These troops were later co-opted into 61 Cavalry, the only mounted regiment besides the famed Presidents Body Guard (PBG), which is largely officered by 61 Cavalry. Imperial Brigade is known for its exploits in the First World War in Megiddo and most notably for the liberation of Haifa on September 23, 1918. The brigade was part of the British Indian Army fighting the Ottoman Turkish forces in the Middle East.

After independence, and in keeping with the natural desire to discard imperial baggage, the memorial and circle were rechristened Te...

Catholicism is the One True Faith "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The Creation of Adam, as depicted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, by Michelangelo. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)The Creation of Adam, as depicted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, by Michelangelo. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)

Catholicism is the one true faith. You might think thats a pretty odd thing for a Jew to say. But in a Western context, we treat it as if its true.

Everything in the West is oriented around the Catholic church. Sunday is the day of rest. Even if contemporary corporate culture has largely abandoned the idea of resting as a concept, government offices and banks and other such things are more often than not closed on Sundays. We even use the Catholic calendar, created by a pope and dating the years from the birth of the Catholic savior, Jesus Christ.

The other major western branch of Christianity (in all its myriad fractions) defines itself relationally to the Catholic Church. Its called Protestantism because they were protesting against the papacy.

Catholic terminology and ideas are embedded into our culture. We say talk about things being sinful or pure and mutter Jesus Christ when we swear. The way God is traditionally depicted, as an old, white man sitting on a throne with a long beard comes from Catholic iconography and art.

The history we learn centers the Catholic church, for a long time the most powerful religious institution in Europe, and then later on the planet. We talk about separation of church and state because the historical norm was the opposite (they were fused under Catholic rulers for hundreds of years).

The very way Western culture conceives religion makes Catholicism the default, with other systems defined as how they compare to Catholicism. This has been imprinted over a 2,000-year period of social conditioning. Why else would we talk about the Old Testament or Eastern spirituality? Both of those terms define their...

MANILA, Philippines  Whether or not Beijing accepts the July 2012 ruling of a United Nations-back tribunal on the South China Sea is immaterial under international law, Malacaang said Monday.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque stressed that the international tribunal had already invalidated Chinas historic claims to the contested waters and that their artificial islands were located within the Philippines exclusive economic zone.

What is material under international law is its there Thats the unique feature of international law. You cannot deny what is there, Roque said in a televised press briefing. The Philippines has declined to press China on the decision, preferring instead to focus on other aspects of ties between the two nations.

Roque made the statement in response to Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, who said that the Philippines should reject Chinas request to conduct marine research in Benham Rise, which is now officially called Philippine Rise.

In a statement sent to CNN Philippines, Carpio said that the Philippines would be dumb to grant Chinas request following its refusal to accept its obligation under the arbitral award.

Barry McElduff resigns I do not wish to be a barrier to reconciliation and healing "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

At ten oclock this morning, Barry McElduff released a statement to announce that he is resigning as MP for West Tyrone.

It is with great sadness that, after more than 30 years as an active Sinn Fin member and public representative I am tendering my resignation as MP for West Tyrone. The reason I am doing so is because of the consequences of the Twitter video which has caused such controversy over the last week.

But the deep and unnecessary hurt this video caused the families of the victims of Kingsmill is my greatest regret. I again offer my profound apology to those families and to the wider victims community. Had I been conscious of the connection to the terrible atrocity at Kingsmill I would certainly not have posted that tweet. I genuinely did not make that connection, not for a second did I make that connection in my mind.

Kingsmill was wrong, unjustifiable and sectarian. It should never have happened. There was no intended reference to Kingsmill in my tweet. But I do accept that there are many people who do not believe this to be the case. I accept also that this view of what happened is deeply damaging to the reconciliation process that is so important to consolidating the peace process and to healing the pain and hurt of the past.

I cannot undo the pain caused but I know that my continuing role as MP for West Tyrone will compound that sense of hurt and impede any reconciliation process. I wish to wholeheartedly thank my family and friends for their steadfast personal support during this difficult time, and the people of West Tyrone whom I have had the privilege to serve as their public representative for over 20 years. I have a deep gra for my native county and its people.

I am an Irish republican and believe whole heartedly in the reunification of our country and an agreed Ireland in which we heal the wounds of the past together. Reconciliation is essential, but that message is not being heard at this time. I do not wish to be a barrier to reconciliation and healing and in that spirit I again offer my sincere apologies to the survivors and families of those murdered at Kingsmill.

Airbus overtakes Boeing, says could halt A380 programme "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

AFP

AFP / by Djallal MALTI | Airbus said that without new orders from Dubai-based airline, Emirates, it will be forced to halt its A380 programme
PARIS (AFP)  European aerospace giant Airbus overtook arch-rival Boeing in terms of aircraft orders last year, but warned that it could cease making its A380 jet if it does not receive any more orders for the supersize plane.Airbus said it booked a total 1,109 aircraft orders and a record 718 deliveries in 2017.

By comparison, US rival Boeing booked 912 orders and 763 deliveries.

Chief operating officer Fabrice Bregier said that overall deliveries could rise to 800 this year, given the increased pace of production of its A320neo aircraft.

The medium-haul A320neo and A321neo jets feature new generation engines that use 15 percent less fuel compared to their peers.

We are going to double the number of A320neos delivered this year, Bregier told a news conference. If we do that, we will be close to 800 deliveries in 2018.

He acknowledged that deliveries of the A320neo had been slowed last year by problems with the engines made by US firm Pratt & Withney and by CFM, the joint venture of General Electric and Safran.

Nevertheless, the problems were gradually being resolved and around 30 aircraft were waiting for their engines, down from 60 at the beginning of the year, he said.

Turning to the A380, sales director, John Leahy, warned that Airbus would have no choice but to halt the programme if Dubais Emirates airline the main customer for the superjumbo launched in 2007 did not place another order.

We are still talking to Emirates, but honestly, they are probably the only one to have the ability right now on the market place to take a minimum of six per year on a period of eight to 10 years, Leahy said.

Quite honestly, if we cant work out a deal with Emirates there is no choice but to shut down the programme, Leahy said.

But Im hopeful that we work out a deal with Emirates, he added.

There have been a total of 317 orders for the A380, the worlds largest passenger airliner, since its launch.

Airbus had been hoping to secure another major order from Emirates, which took delivery of its 100th A380 in 2017, at the Dubai Air Show in November.

But the airline finally picked 40 Boeing 787-10 jets instead.

Bloody Sunday, Brexit & The Democratic Process: Public lecture, followed by In conversation with Bernadette McAliskey Derry, 26th January 2018, 7.30pm "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Why Bloody Sunday, Brexit & The Democratic Process ?

Much like many other parts of the world at that time, the North of Ireland was undergoing a process of profound political change in the early 1970s.  By the time January 1972 came around the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) had already been holding peaceful protests and marches for close on 4 years.

From the outset the Northern state had chosen to respond violently to NICRAs modest demands and this eventually led to the British government introducing armed troops onto the streets in August 1969.  This militarised situation was further heightened with the commencement of the IRAs bombing offensive in 1970.

Then in August 71 the state introduced internment without trial and on Sunday, January 30th 1972 NICRA responded by holding an anti-interment march in Derry city, which tragically ended with 28 civilian marchers being shot by the British army, 13 of whom died that day.

Today all across the world we see people continuing to express that desire for democratic change, whether thats through the Arab Spring protests, which erupted in many middle eastern countries several years ago or with Scotlands Independence referendum of 2014 or last year with the UKs Brexit referendum and again more recently with the Catalonian governments declaration of independence from the Spanish state.

Equally and despite the election last year of a racist, sexist, Islamophobe president the American people, by electing Donald Trump, have clearly demonstrated their desire for real and urgent democratic change.

What then does this all mean for global society and more specifically how might these seismic changes effect Ireland and its relationship with our nearest neighbour.

Britains Brexit decision has introduced an air of anxiety and instability into European politics, which in turn has provoked heated debate and soul searching around the question of the border here and for many this instability has brought the imperative of a united Ireland much closer.

However, in response to justified demands for change and accountability, many governments and institutions have chosen different forms of repression or censure, be that with the Spanish governments recent violent response to democratic Catalonian nationalism, the EUs punishing fiscal water-boarding of the Greek economy or through EU Troika diktats delivered to the Southern Irish state.

Syria says US-led coalitions plan to create a border force creates traitors Russia-Syria Already Supported by Iran and Turkey "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

AFP/File | Kurdish female fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces in Raqas iconic Al-Naim square on October 19, 2017, after retaking the city from IS
DAMASCUS (AFP)  Syria on Monday lambasted the US-led coalitions plan to create a 30,000-strong border force in the countrys northeast, saying it would consider its members traitors. The alliance fighting the Islamic State group announced on Sunday that it was working with Arab and Kurdish fighters to establish a Border Security Force (BSF).

The BSF would be responsible for preventing a resurgence of IS in areas where the jihadists had been cleared by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

But an official source in Syrias foreign ministry on Monday denounced the plan.

Syria strongly condemns the US announcement on the creation of militias in the countrys northeast, which represents a blatant attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity and unity of Syria, and a flagrant violation of international law, said the source, cited by state news agency SANA.

Syria considers any Syrian who participates in these militias sponsored by the Americans as a traitor to their people and nation, and will deal with them on this basis.

Backed by the US-led coalitions air strikes, advisers and weapons, the SDF has ousted IS from swathes of territory in the east and north, including IS bastion Raqa.

With the offensive winding down, the coalition and SDF said they were shifting their focus to border security to prevent a jihadist comeback.

A strong Border Security Force will prohibit Daeshs freedom of movement and deny the transportation of illicit materials, the coalition said, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

In a new emailed statement on Monday, it said it aimed to create the 30,000-strong force over the next several years.

About half would be SDF veterans, and another 15,000 would be new recruits.

The Border Security Force will be stationed along the borders of SDF-held areas, to include portions of the Euphrates river valley and international borders to the east and north of SDF-liberated territory, the coalition said.

Turkey reacted sharply to news of the border force on Sunday, saying it would legitimise a terror organisation.

Ankara is fiercely opposed to the SDF, which is dominated by the Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) considered by....

Face Recognition to Now Be Permitted as Additional Means of Aadhaar Authentication "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The move will enable easy authentication for those individuals who face a difficulty in other biometric authentication. Credit: PTI

New Delhi:  The UIDAI today allowed face recognition as additional means of Aadhaar authentication to be used in combination with existing ways such as fingerprint or iris scan.

The move will enable easy authentication for those individuals who face a difficulty in other biometric authentication like fingerprint and iris.

The facility is being allowed only in a fusion mode that is along with other existing means of authentication and will be available by July 1, 2018, an official release said.

This facility is going to help in inclusive authentication of those who are not able to biometrically authenticate due to their worn out fingerprints, old age or hard work conditions, the UIDAI said.

As of now, two modes of biometric authentication, fingerprint authentication and iris authentication, are allowed under Aadhaar.

The face authentication provides additional option for all residents to have inclusive authentication. It shall be allowed only in fusion mode along with one more authentication factor combined with either fingerprint or iris or OTP to be able to successfully authenticate an Aadhaar number holder, UIDAI said.

The new method will also be allowed on need basis.

Todays move comes close on the heels of the biggest overhaul of Aadhaar system by the UIDAI last week when it allowed individuals to create and use a virtual ID to avoid sharing their unique identity numbers, when using government and other services.

Users will, from March 1, have the option of generating a 16-digit virtual identity mapped to their Aadhaar number that can be shared...

Bank Indonesia Team Up With Police to Clampdown on Bali Bitcoin Transactions "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Indonesias Central Bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), have united with the national police service to tackle the illegal use of Bitcoin in Bali. According to them, the tourist hot spot is much more likely to attract people trying to use the cryptocurrency for transactions that are outside the law. The Jakarta Post and local language news source Tempo.co report that on Saturday, January 13, a senior member from BI, Causa Iman Karana, announced the clampdown in Dempasar, the capital of the romantic island getaway location:

We are looking out for bitcoin transactions in Bali, particularly in tourist spots. We will take measures against non-rupiah transactions.

Karana also called on the people of Bali to not accept transactions using digital money. For the banker, it is the lack of central authority regulating transactions that is a primary cause for concern. Like most central bankers, the fear of their own pending redundancy was also a likely motivating factor behind his words.

This recent  crackdown in Bali is part of a wider initiative against the use of cryptocurrency in the nation of Indonesia. According to national legislators, making transactions in Bitcoin violates Law No. 7/2011 on currency. This recent reiteration underlines the initiative penned at the bank late last year. In early December, Bank Indonesia issued BI Regulation No. PBI: 19/12/PBI/2017. This expressly banned the use of digital currency in Indonesia and stated that all transactions and payments must be made using the national currency, the rupiah. A spokesperson for the bank, Agusman, at the time spoke of the risks posed to those getting involved in the digital currency space. Like Karana, he too deemed the primary issue with virtual money transactions the lack of centralised control:

We warned people not to carry out transactions with virtual money because there is no authority that regulates the transactions.

The bank spokesperson went on to highlight the speculative risk of using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Also amongst his concerns were the dangerous posed to the state because of money laundering, as well as the ease with which virtual currencies could be used to finance terrorism. Agusman concluded with a straight forward message for the people of his country:

Therefore, [BI] wants all parties not to sell, buy or trade the virtual currency.

Blunt Force: Take an Attacker Down in Seconds "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Yeah, ReadyNutrition Readers, this article is about the bat.  Not that flying mammal, or the derisive term used for a mother-in-law in angerthe All-American baseball bat.  This wonderful piece of sporting equipment is very effective in defending yourself in addition to hitting one over the fence in center field.  I know, I know, naysayers, you surely cant carry a bat around with you wherever you travel.yada, yada.  Seriously, there are several reasons to tote this everyday self-defense item around with you.  Lets cover them.

Batter Up!

For those of you who wish to know, my baseball bat of choice is an aluminum T-ball bat, a 24 job that sits directly next to my leg and within the groove of my vehicles front seat.  I recommend aluminum over wood for several reasons.  Firstly, theres no danger of the bat splitting at the handle or breaking apart: it is sturdily-constructed.  Secondly, it will not rot or deteriorateand the aluminum bat will not rust.  Thirdly, theyre pretty cheap: you can lay your hands on one in a used sporting goods store or thrift store for between $5 to $10.

It is not just for beating someone up.  The bat can also be used to bust out of the vehicle if its trapped and you cant open the door.  Just bust out the window with the bat, and get out.  How about hiking around?  You can use that bat to keep an animal at bay if need be.  The point is, you may also have to protect yourself without a signature, such as the sound of a gunshot.  The bat is a lot quieter in this regard.

It is also a weapon that gives you some defensive distance.  Muggers coming in, a pair of them armed with switchblades?  If they are after me, Ill show them how to dance with that bat in a manner they never viewed on Star Search.  That bat gives you the distance to strike without exposing yourself to some goon who wishes to come in close.

In the following video, the demonstrators use a baton, but the same defense movements can be used with a bat.

5 Ways You Can Practice With the Bat For Self-Defense

Once again, if you dont train with it, theres no point in toting it with you.  Another thing: even if youre trained, it wont do you any good unless you act.  The finest equipment in the world wont d...

Teacher coulpe and two children killed in Morobe Province "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Two primary school teachers serving in rural Kabwum district were killed instantly along with their two children and an elderly woman relative, in what is now considered one of the worst road accidents in Morobe province, NBC reports.

With the unofficial and unconfirmed death toll last registered at seven, the Nasupum crash is one of the worst road accident in Morobe province, following the worst national road accident in 2010 where 40 people died after two Route-100 Coaster buses crashed into each other at Ragiampum village near Watarais junction in the Markham valley.

Among the dead, is the Munga family of four, parents Yaing and Brenda Munga both serving primary school teachers and their three-year-son Nathaniel and two-year-old daughter, Justline.

The two teachers of Tauga Primary School in Komba Local Level Government Area in Kabwum district, were travelling from Lae to Nadzab ariport to catch a light aircraft flight to go back to Kabwum with the intention to settle in and resume duties early.

They were accompanied also by an elderly woman relative who was the childrens babysitter, and were travelling in a five-door Toyota Landcruiser vechicle which collided with a 15-seater bus near Nasuapum village, located halfway between Lae and Nadzab.

They were part of the first seven dead bodies rushed down to Lae along with some other occupants of both vehicles, most of whom were in serious conditions.

Michael Gerson, who oversees the districts eduation standards as the Provincial Examinations Cordinator, says the two teachers who were killed in that tragic road accident were part of the team of hardworking and committed teachers serving in Kabwum, whose contribution resulted in the district topping the province academically in 2017.

Relative and colleague teacher, Kevin Panpan, and Mr Gerson described their deaths as unexpected and unnecesary and say it is a big loss to the people of Kabwum and the Education division.

The military situation in the area of the strategic Abu al-Duhur airbase in the Syrian province of Idlib remains tense.

By January 15, government forces had advanced west and northwest of Khansir and established control over al-Hass Mount and a large number of the nearby villages. The distance between government positions southeast of the Abu al-Duhur airbase and west of Khanasir is now about 2 km.

In southern Idlib, the Tiger Forces and their allies engaged militants in the villages of Atshan, Tell Maraq, Umm Khalakhil, Zifr Saqer, Zif Kabir, Suruj, Istablat and Rasm al-Qard that had been a target of counter-attack launched by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and its allies.

Separately, government troops advanced in northeastern Hama and captured the villages of Tafahah and Tal Mutilat as well as attacked the villages of Abu Khaf, Aniq Bajrah and Sukari.

Britain: Medical records of thousands of patients handed to US firms connected to tobacco industry by British health officials "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The medical records of British cancer victims have been handed to a controversial American firm working for one of the worlds biggest tobacco companies, the Daily Telegraph can reveal.

The data covering almost 180,000 patients every case of lung cancer diagnosed in England over a four year period was given by health officials to a firm which has acted to cigarette giants Philip Morris International for almost three decades.

Image result for NHS, Photos

It is feared the company could use the anonymised data in legal cases minimising the dangers of smoking, or fighting regulation.

The sensitive information, taken from NHS records, was taken without the consent of any of the cancer sufferers or their families.

An investigation by the Daily Telegraph reveals that Public Health England (PHE) gave the anonymised data, covering 179,040 lung tumours diagnosed between 2009 and 2013, to a commercial firm called William E.

EPO Scandals Played a Considerable Role in Sinking the Unified Patent Court (UPC) "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Inability to maintain the reputation and perception of justice at the EPO is proving fatal

Dialogue like telling the Appeal Boards to sack their colleague, a judge called Patrick Corcoran?
Original: Presidential candidates set out their vision for the EPO | full article (copy)

Summary: Todays press coverage about the UPC reinforces the idea that the EPO saga, culminating in despicable attacks on Patrick Corcoran (a judge), may doom the UPC once and for all (unless one believes Team UPC)

THE UPC isnt going ahead, no matter what media may be trying to tell us. Some of that media is literally paid for UPC advocacy. It has been promising or heralding the UPC for a number of years, but it was wrong every time. They are trying to sell outcomes, not information.

To get an idea of what patent professionals think, look at comments. Right now, for example, virtually all the comments about it in Kluwer Patent Blog are negative (13 comments so far, with the author trying to contain the damage after his late Friday 'Molotov'). That speaks for itself really. So do the comments (so far) in this mornings coverage from The Register. Good news for UPC advocates, bad news for EPO staff, says the summary. Well, UPC advocates being Team UPC and good news being an odd term because the views of Tilmann at el were so predictable that its not even news (he already expressed these same views in Kluwer Patent Blog, only to be promptly slammed in the comments). The article is noteworthy for the parts which cover EPO scandals and their relevance to the perception of justice. Quoting the author who is very much familiar with these matters:

Senior figures in Germanys Social Democrats (SPD) called on Sunday for amendments to the partys preliminary coalition agreement with Chancellor Angela Merkels conservative bloc.

SPD lawmakers said they hoped that the parties could still agree on a new social security scheme and firmer employee contracts in the would-be coalitions policy blueprint.

However, Germanys conservative bloc  made up of Merkels Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU)  swiftly dismissed the calls, insisting that the SPD first vote on whether to move on to formal negotiations before demanding more concessions.

Dementia Villages: A New Way of Caring for The Vulnerable Old "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Image may contain: one or more people and outdoor

The Netherlands pursues a promising (but costly) experiment

The Economist

ANJA, who is in her 80s, says she has lived here for one hour. In fact, it has been almost a year. Like all of her neighbours, she has severe dementia. But if she is feeling particularly perky, she can buy lagers at the local supermarket, get coiffed at the hair salon and play bingo as night falls. She can dip her feet into the local fountain, or even cycle into it. She lives in Hogeweyk, thought to be the worlds first dementia village, near Amsterdam.

Dementia villages are gated communities designed for people who suffer from dementia, a term used to describe a set of symptoms (such as memory loss and confusion) that are caused by a variety of brain diseases. Hogeweyks 150 residents live in six-room houses, each designed around one of four lifestyles. These are selected for patients after tests and interviews alongside their families. Anja (not her real name) and her housemates live in a traditional home. They eat starchy stamppot stews and have a sewing machine that says it is Made in West Germany. You wont find Danish [modern or minimalist] design here, says Eloy van Hal, who founded the village in 2008. The neighbouring house is furnished with pink floral wallpaper and kitschy plastic chandeliers; all part of the urban style.

Hogeweyks allowance of small freedoms gives peace of mind to people who have lost a part of theirs. Grouping residents by lifestyles is meant to establish continuity between their former lives and the nursing facility. The idea is based on reminiscence therapy, which holds that anxiety in dementia patients can be reduced by creating a familiar environment. It is catching on. A dementia home in Rotterdam has built a remembrance museum in its basement where residents can ogle over childhood artefacts. In Dresden, one nursing home has a room set up to recall the former East Germany. A poster of Erich Honecker, a former leader of the East German communist party, looms over communist paraphernalia and bulky cassette tapes playing 1960s hits. Sometimes fakery keeps residents safe. One home in Dsseldorf has a fake bus stop. Residents who decide, in their confusion, that they want to go somewhere else tend to line up patiently there. After they have waited for a bus that will never come, a carer lures them back to their homes.

Hogeweyk received over 1,400 visitors...

Wont Challenge Discharge of Officers in Sohrabuddin Case: CBI "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The trial court had in 2016 and last year discharged Rajkumar Pandiyan, DG Vanzara and Dinesh MN.

Sohranuddin Sheikh and Kauser Bi.

Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Bombay high court on Monday (January 15) that it will not challenge the recent discharge of any of the senior IPS officers in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case.

CBI counsel Sandesh Patil and additional solicitor general Anil Singh told the HC that the agency had already challenged the discharge of some junior officers in the case.

However, the CBI had decided not to challenge the trial court order that absolved senior officers, including former deputy inspector general of Gujarat DG Vanzara, Rajasthan IPS officer Dinesh MN and Gujarat IPS officer Rajkumar Pandiyan, in connection with the alleged fake encounter killing of Sohrabuddin and his aide Tulsiram Prajapati, they said.

The CBIs submissions came while a single bench of Justice Revati Mohite-Dere was hearing a revision application filed by Sohrabuddins brother Rubabuddin Shaikh, challenging the trial court orders of discharge of these officers.

The trial court had in 2016 and last year discharged Pandiyan, Vanzara and Dinesh MN.

Rubabuddin has filed separate petitions challenging the discharge of the three officers from the case.

However, his counsel advocate Gautam Tiwari told the high court on Monday that while they had been able to serve notices to Dinesh MN and Pandiyan in the case, they had been unable to trace the address or contact details of Vanzara.

The high court had earlier directed the CBI to provide Vanzaras address to the petitioner, but Tiwari said the central agency had provided an incorrect address....

In Iran, protesters suicides are stirring anger and calls for accountability "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Image may contain: one or more people

By THOMAS ERDBRINK

.

TEHRAN, Iran Two of the detained young men killed themselves, and another was a terrorist who died in a clash with security forces, Irans government officials have declared with finality. But in an extraordinary display of audacity, many Iranians, including a number of lawmakers and a top entertainment star, have assailed such conclusions.

The three young men were among more than two dozen Iranians who died in the wave of anti-government protests that swept the country a few weeks ago, the most serious unrest to confront the Islamic republics political-religious hierarchy in nearly a decade.

The personal stories that have since emerged of the three have struck a nerve among many Iranians, who see glaring contradictions to the official accounts of the facts.

Their push for further investigation, including a parliamentary demand for an inquiry into the prison deaths, suggests that while the protests have largely subsided, the fallout in Iran may be just beginning.

This news of so-called suicides is making people angry; they demand answers, said Farshad Ghorbanpour, an analyst close to the government of President Hassan Rouhani.

It is unclear whether the anger signals a potent new complication for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who as Irans supreme leader was a target of some of the protests, which began over economic grievances and quickly broadened.

But the willingness by members of mainstream Iranian society to publicly repudiate the narrative of the top judicial authorities is unusual in this country of 80 million, where such behavior can be risky and invite retribution.

Irans judicial authorities, in an update on Sunday about the aftermath of the protests and government response, said a total of 25 people had died and nearly 4,000 had been arrested. They also said that hundreds had been released, including 500 in Tehran.

The national prosecutor, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, told a news conference in Tehran that none of the bullets found in those killed had matched types used by Irans law enforcement officers and military. Those who died in detention, he said, had committed suicide.

Court Overturns Sharia Patrol Acquittal "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Members of the 'Sharia Patrol' in Wuppertal, GermanyMembers of the Sharia Patrol in Wuppertal, Germany (Photo: video screenshot)

A German federal court overturned the ruling of a regional court, which acquitted members of a controversial Sharia Patrol operating in Wuppertal.

The case dates back to September 2014 when a group of Salafist Muslims were caught patrolling the streets of Wuppertal in western Germany telling those walking by not to engage in activities forbidden by sharia (Islamic) law.

The group handed out notices to passersby announcing the area was a Sharia Controlled Zone which meant that alcohol, drugs, gambling, music and concerts, pornography and prostitution were prohibited.

Despite the fact that the group was dressed in in bright orange vests labelled Sharia Patrol, the regional court ruled the group had not violated Germanys laws on wearing uniforms that are suggestively militant or intimidating a law originally aimed at squelching any nascent Nazi-like street movements.

In turning over the lower courts ruling, the federal court said that the regional court had been mistaken since the judges failed to consider the impact the mens actions had on the public.

Keppel bribes belie Singapores clean image "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

State shipbuilder's US$55 million bribes-for-business scandal has raised questions about the city-state's supposed incorruptibility

One of the largest corruption scandals in the history of Singapores corporate sector has come to glaring light, tarnishing the image and credentials of prominent state-backed conglomerate Keppel Corp and raising questions about the city-states supposed incorruptibility.

Its subsidiary, Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (KOM), the worlds largest builder of oil rigs, has been implicated in a 13-year-long US$55 million bribery scheme involving Brazilian executives and politicians to win business deals.

KOMs US subsidiary last month pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate anti-bribery laws and agreed to pay US$422 million in criminal fines as part of a deferred prosecution agreement with the US Department of Justice (DoJ), as well as authorities in Brazil and Singapore.

KOM made the bribe payments between 2001 and 2014 through a chain of shell companies that used the US banking system to conceal and disperse kickbacks, according to court documents released by the DoJ. The documents claimed the company knowingly and willfully conspired to win business through bribery.

The illegal payments were made mainly to officials at Brazils state-owned oil giant, Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras), the largest listed company in Latin America.

Big Bets on A.I. Open a New Frontier for Chip Start-Ups, Too "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Today, at least 45 start-ups are working on chips that can power tasks like speech and self-driving cars, and at least five of them have raised more than $100 million from investors. Venture capitalists invested more than $1.5 billion in chip start-ups last year, nearly doubling the investments made two years ago, according to the research firm CB Insights.

SAN FRANCISCO For years, tech industry financiers showed little interest in start-up companies that made computer chips.

How on earth could a start-up compete with a goliath like Intel, which made the chips that ran more than 80 percent of the worlds personal computers? Even in the areas where Intel didnt dominate, like smartphones and gaming devices, there were companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia that could squash an upstart.

But then came the tech industrys latest big thing artificial intelligence. A.I., it turned out, works better with new kinds of computer chips. Suddenly, venture capitalists forgot all those forbidding roadblocks to success for a young chip company.

US Govt Brands Torrent, Streaming & Cyberlocker Sites As Notorious Markets "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In its annual Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has listed a long list of websites said to be involved in online piracy.

The list is compiled with high-level input from various trade groups, including the MPAA and RIAA who both submitted their recommendations (1,2) during early October last year.

With the word allegedly used more than two dozen times in the report, the US government notes that its report does not constitute cast-iron proof of illegal activity. However, it urges the countries from where the so-called notorious markets operate to take action where they can, while putting owners and facilitators on notice that their activities are under the spotlight.

A goal of the List is to motivate appropriate action by owners, operators, and service providers in the private sector of these and similar markets, as well as governments, to reduce piracy and counterfeiting, the report reads.

USTR highlights the following marketplaces because they exemplify global counterfeiting and piracy concerns and because the scale of infringing activity in these marketplaces can cause significant harm to U.S. intellectual property (IP) owners, consumers, legitimate online platforms, and the economy.

The report begins with a page titled Issue Focus: Illicit Streaming Devices. Unsurprisingly, particularly given their place in dozens of headlines last year, the segment focus on the set-top box phenomenon. The piece doesnt list any apps or software tools as such but highlights the general position, claiming a cost to the US entertainment industry of $4-5 billion a year.

Torrent Sites

In common with previous years, the USTR goes on to list several of the worlds top torrent sites but due to changes in circumstances, others have been delisted. ExtraTorrent, which shut down May 2017, is one such example.

As the worlds most famous torrent site, The Pirate Bay gets a prominent mention, with the USTR noting that the site is of symbolic importance as one of the longest-running and most vocal torrent sites. The USTR underlines the sites resilience by noting its hydra-like form while revealing an apparent secret concerning its hosting arrangements.

The Pirate Bay has allegedly had more than a dozen domains hosted in various countries around the world, ap...

J Nicholas Gross Thinks Professors Stop Being Professors If Theyre Not Patent Extremists Like Him "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Summary: The below-the-belt tactics of patent trolls and their allies show no signs of abatement and their tone reveals growing irritation and frustration (inability to sue and extort companies as easily as they used to)

THE INTERNET is not a pleasant place when it comes to discussions about patents. We may seem confrontational/abrasive at times, but nowhere near as much as trolls and their defenders. They describe people who invalidate patents as killers or death squads. Watchtroll even called them a cartel earlier this month.

J Nicholas GrossThis theme of death or kills isnt too uncommon. Here is one patent maximalist stating: In a Rule 36, Fed. Cir. Affirmed 101/Alice Kill of ZKey Patent Asserted against Facebook (he always, without exception, uses the word kill in such scenarios, otherwise survives i.e. the language of militarism).

These people are habitually attacking CAFC judges, not just PTAB panels and SCOTUS Justices (as well as the EFF, as J Nicholas Gross repeatedly did when he wrote for the Web site of a patent troll last year). According to him, based on this tweet, professors stop being professors when he doesnt agree with them on patents. These are his words: Anti-patent troll Professor (RIGHT!) Lemley reversed today: cafc.uscourts.gov/sites/default/ CAFC says his serial infringer client loses on 101 bc SOFTWARE-BASED innovations can make non-abstract improvements to computer technology here security profile enabled bette [sic] virus filtering

J Nicholas Gross must be suffering from inferiority complex; hes not a professor like Lemley (heck, he is not even a doctor), so hes attacking Lemleys credentials. Some patent trolls did this to me as well, defaming me as having fabricated my Ph.D. and even resorting to literally below-the-belt insults (like speaking about my genitals in their public podcasts). He appeared to have developed quite a reputation for these things and he is connected online (maybe professionally) to these trolls, too. Here he is, only days ago, attacking PTABs decision: Another typical day at...

Ahed Tamimi: Australian Outrage Or Indifference ? "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Australia has once again remained silent on another Israeli outrage, writes Professor Stuart Rees.

Sixteen-year old Ahed Tamimi has been imprisoned in an Israeli jail. She slapped an Israeli soldier who had invaded her home in the village of Nabi Saleh, where her cousin was shot in the face with a rubber bullet and sustained life-threatening injuries. Her mother Nariman and cousin Noor have also been arrested. A video of the incident was streamed live on Facebook.

In response to Aheds resistance, Israeli education Minister Naftali Bennet said that Tamimi should spend the rest of her life in prison. A prominent Israeli commentator, Ben Caspin said hed like to see the teenager sent to a dungeon to be tortured in such a fashion that no-one should witness it.

Aheds Courage

Around the world there is outrage that Ahed has been being shackled and held in detention. Im outraged by Australian political leaders apparent non-response to the thuggery of Bennet and others, politicians whom an Australian government regards as partners in anti-terrorism operations and with whom we like to trade in arms.

I do not want to hear the sitting-on-the-fence response: weve stayed silent because we cant interfere in the affairs of another country. Thats the time-honoured cowards way out. As a newly minted member of the UNs Human Rights Council, the Australian government should not behave as though it believes in human rights but cant afford to offend a friend.

Journalist Ben Ehrenreich records that Ahed first came to the notice of Israeli authorities when she was 11. She was filmed raising her bare, skinny arm to shake her fist in the face of a fully armed Israeli soldier twice her size. Other soldiers had just arrested her brother.

The very courageous Ahed has lived her life under a brutal occupation. Settlers who steal land are protected by the military. Settlers act with impunity but aim to ethnically cleanse the area surrounding Nabi Saleh. Those who resist injustice are charged with being offenders while the perpetrators of injustice are defined as victims. Morality, law, human rights and ethics dont exist. Who...

Costliest Disaster Year Ever 2017 Living on Earth (PRI) "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Fires ravaged parts of Southern California in December 2017, unusually late for fire season

2017 The Costliest Disaster Year Ever

HOST: Steve Curwood, Public Radio International, Living on Earth.

DATE: January 12, 2018, WEB-SITE: www.loe.org

CURWOOD: From PRI, and the Stanley Studios at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, this is Living on Earth. Im Steve Curwood.

NOAA the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tells us America suffered a record amount of damage in 2017 from natural disasters, with a tab of more than 306 billion dollars. And to put that 306 billion in perspective, consider that its more than the interest on the US national debt, and twice the federal budget for health, Medicare, and education. Extreme weather hit almost every state this year: wildfires out west, Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Harvey in the South, and disasters that got less press coverage but still cost of over a billion dollars events like the Minnesota hailstorm and drought in the mid-west. Here to discuss these steep costs and how they relate to climate disruptions is Kendra Pierre-Louis from the New York Times Climate Desk. Welcome to Living on Earth Kendra!

PIERRE-LOUIS: Thanks, Steve. Im so glad to be here.

CURWOOD: So, 2017 was only the third hottest year on record in the US, but at 306 billion dollars, disaster damage broke all records.
PIERRE-LOUIS: When you go back to 1980 when they first started keeping records, there were only 3 natural disasters that topped a billion dollars. This year it was 16. The only other year where there are 16 events that topped a billion dollars was in 2011. So what were seeing is its not just that were having severe weather events, were having more of them.

CURWOOD: So, $306 billion dollars. Just how unprecedented is this figure record-wise compared to previous years?
PIERRE-LOUIS: Yes, its record-breaking. The next closest disaster year was in 2005, and that was the year of Hurricane Katrina and that was $91 billion dollars less.

CURWOOD: Now, of course, were not saying that climate caused all of this, but climate amplifies these disasters.
PIERRE-LOUIS: Right. We can definitely say that climate change amplified these disasters, and that we can see especially when it comes to, like, the western fires or the hurricanes that happen this year, we can definitely see the fingerprints of....

Who and What Will AI Serve? US and China Give Very Different Answers "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

Beijing (MPN Artificial Intelligence is a frighteningly powerful new tool and weapon. Who and what will it serve? In the U.S., tech giants Facebook, Google, and Amazon and their corporate agendas; in China, the needs of the public and the economy. These two models should be thought through now.

Speaking to a group of students in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a bold proclamation. Artificial intelligence is the future, he said, stating that this is a fact not only for Russia but for all humankind. It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.

Why Did Sudan Close Their Border with Eritrea? "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Khartoum (GPA) Sudan closed their border with Eritrea as long-standing tensions with Egypt begin to flare up. Ongoing disputes over territory and resources, as well as Sudans relations with Turkey, triggered the dispute.

On January 6th Sudan shut their border with Eritrea after fortifying it with thousands of troops. The closure comes off the heels of rising tensions with Egypt. Relations between the two nations have long been heated, but on January 4th Egypt sent hundreds of troops to a UAE base in Eritrea. Though Egypt denies having sent any troops to the base. Two days later, the Sudanese-Eritrean border was closed until further notice.

Sudan shut the border citing national security concerns. On January 11th Sudan officially announced that the deployment of troops along the Eritrean border was a result of military threats from Eritrea and Egypt. The border remains fortified.

Philip K. Dicks Electric Dreams, the New Series Starring Bryan Cranston, Anna Paquin & Steve Buscemi, Now Streaming Free on Amazon Prime "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Do I like Philip K. Dick? Do androids dream of electric sheep? Honestly, I dont think well ever be able to answer such questions about the subjective experience of artificial beings. But I know for certain that I like Philip K. Dick. Deeply admire, respect, fear, even there are many words I could use to describe the way I feel about his imagination and vision. And I could say much the same about the film adaptations of Dicks work, up to and including Blade Runner 2049, which wasnt as visually overwhelming on the small screen after its release on streaming video but still as emotionally captivating in its narrative, pacing, score, and director Denis Villeneuves fidelity to, and expansion of, the original films use of color and monumental, future-brutalist architecture to tell a story.

Though he very much wanted to break out of science fiction and achieve the status of a literary writerthe distinctions in his day being much harder and fasterDicks fiction has provided the ultimate source for the cinematic sci-fi epic for several decades now, and shows little sign of falling out of favor. This Portable Pi May Not Be What You Expect "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

In the years since the Raspberry Pi and other similar inexpensive Linux-capable single board computers came to the market, we have shown you a huge variety of projects using them at the heart of portable computers. These normally take the form of a laptop or tablet project, but today we have one that starts from a completely different perspective.

The Kindleberry Pi Zero W from [Ben Yarmis] does not attempt to create an enclosure or form factor for a portable computing solution. Instead its fair to say that it is more of a software hack than a hardware one, as hes created something of an ad-hoc portable Raspberry Pi from other off-the-shelf pieces of consumer hardware.

The Zero W is a particularly useful computer for this application because of its tiny size, lowish power consumption, on-board Bluetooth, and wireless networking. He has taken a W and put it in the official Pi case, with a portable battery pack. No other connections, thats his computer. As an input device he has a Bluetooth keyboard, and his display is a jailbroken Kindle Touch tied to the Pi using his Android phone as a WiFi router. We suspect with a little bit of configuration the Pi could easily serve that function on its own, but the phone also provides an Internet connection.

The result is a minimalist mobile computing platform which probably has a much longer battery life and higher reliability than portable Pi solutions using LCD displays, and certainly takes up less space than many others. Some might complain that theres no hack in wirelessly connecting such devices, but wed argue that spotting the possibility when so many others embark on complex builds has an elegance all of its own. It has the disadvantage for some users of providing only a terminal based interface to Raspbian, but of course were all seasoned shell veterans for whom that should present no problems, right?

Notable portable Pi solutions weve shown you before include this beautiful Psion-inspired project, and this one using the shell of an old laptop.

ATHENS (Reuters) Greek bus, subway and city rail services were disrupted on Monday with some flights grounded as public transport workers and air traffic controllers walked off the job to protest a reform bill they fear will restrict their right to strike.

The labor action disrupted the daily commute for thousands of Athenians, causing gridlock on streets leading to the city center.

In sympathy, other civil servants including teachers, judges and public hospital doctors staged work stoppages with their unions set to demonstrate later in the day.

The work stoppage is backed by several unions, including civil servants union ADEDY and GSEE, the largest private-sector one.

The government is continuing a storm of anti-labor measures that impoverished Greek society, GSEE said. This is the final blow to workers, pensioners and the unemployed as the bill essentially terminates the constitutional right to strike.

The draft legislation, due for a parliamentary vote later on Monday, makes it harder to call a strike. It is a bitter pill to swallow for Syriza, the dominant party in the ruling coalition, whose roots are in left-wing labor activism.

Unions can now call strikes with the support of one-third of their members; the new law raises that to just over 50 percent. Business owners and Greeces international creditors hope will limit the frequency of strikes and improve productivity, which lags about 20 percent behind the European Union average.

The government says it needs the reforms to receive tranches of bailout aid. The latest bailout, worth up to 86 billion euros ($104 billion), expires in August. So far, Athens has received 40.2 billion euros, and a new tranche is expected to be worth around 4.5 billion euros.

Three French unions demanding more secure working conditions have called for a total blockage of the countrys prisons on Monday after three guards were assaulted last week in northern France by an Islamist terrorist inmate.

Its a dead prison operation. Everything will be done at a slowed-down pace. The agents are very determined, Jean-Franois Forget, of the Ufap-Unsa Justice union, told Agence France-Presse.

Thursdays incident saw the German Islamist convict Christian Ganczarski lightly injure three guards with a pair of scissors and a razor blade at the Vendin-le-Vieil prison, 30 kilometres south of Lille. Ganczarski is serving an 18-year sentence in connection with the attack on a synagogue on the Tunisian resort island of Djerba that killed 21 people in April 2002.

In the wake of the assault, more than a third of French correctional facilities were already subject to work stoppages on Friday.

As long as we havent found a path to agreement with the government, we will not back down, said Forget, condemning what he called total impunity in French prisons. The joint call to action by the Ufap-Unsa Justice, CGT Pnitentiaire and FO Pnitentiaire unions is renewable beyond Monday.

Prison guard sources have told Reuters that Ganczarski was informed just days before assaulting the guards of plans to extradite him to the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. Footage from 2000 aired at Ganczarskis 2009 trial in France showed him alongside then al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Mohammed Atta, a 9/11 attack leader who was killed when the airliner he had hijacked crashed in to the World Trade Center.
