Saving the rainforest 2.0: New report makes recommendations for improving forest protection "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Over the past decade, Norway has spent $3 billion to support efforts to keep forests standing in all of the worlds major rainforest countries, helping to elevate forest protection as a globally important cause (and climate solution) in the process. But its time to take stock of whats worked and what hasnt, in terms of both tropical forest protection in general and Norways particular role in facilitating forest conservation, and chart a new course forward thats the premise of a new report from Rainforest Foundation Norway titled Saving the rainforest 2.0. The report, released last week as hundreds of policymakers and conservationists met at the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum hosted by Norway, identifies key barriers to stopping the destruction of the worlds forests and offers several recommendations for how the world can more successfully combat deforestation. Incidentally, last week also saw the release of deforestation data from the University of Maryland in the U.S. that showed tropical countries lost 158,000 square kilometers (39 million acres) of tree cover in 2017. Thats the equivalent of deforesting an area the size of Bangladesh, marking the second highest annual rate of tree cover loss recorded since the dataset was first compiled in 2001, and it was primarily driven by land clearance for agriculture. As long as deforestation and forest degradation is happening at alarming rates, it is obvious that were doing some things wrong, yvind Eggen, executive director of Rainforest Foundation Norway, said in a statement accompanying the release of the new

Smartphone app helps indigenous communities fight deforestation "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

Five people suspected of illegal gold mining in Peru are in custody after indigenous community members used a system called ForestLink to alert authorities to the activity. Communities are the natural guardians of the Amazon, Rosa Baca, who works for a Peruvian indigenous group called FENAMAD, said in a statement. Technologies like ForestLink are helping indigenous peoples to protect the rainforest from illegal mining, even in areas outside their titled lands. After members of the Masenawa community in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon discovered a mining camp, they documented its presence and sent the evidence by satellite link to FENAMAD short for Federacin Nativa del Rio Madre de Dios y Afluentes. The illegal gold mining camp that the indigenous community members discovered was situated not far from the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. Image courtesy of FENAMAD. Madre de Dios is one of the countrys richest repositories of biodiversity. But its forests have also come under siege in recent years as gold miners some 30,000 in 2015 alone have moved into the area, where they illegally collected $15 billion worth of gold between 2003 and 2014. In the miners wake, they often leave felled forests, muddied waterways and lands scraped of their topsoils. To tackle these types of issues, which typically occur far from the oversight of government authorities and conservation NGOs, Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) developed the ForestLink system and has worked with groups like FENAMAD to get the technology into the hands of the people

Investing in indigenous communities is most efficient way to protect forests, report finds "IndyWatch Feed Allworld"

The best way to save forests and curb biodiversity loss is to recognize the claims of indigenous peoples to their territories, a new report urges. Published by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), an international NGO headquartered in Washington, and Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, the UN special rapporteur on indigenous rights, the 28-nation study compares conservation outcomes in lands controlled by indigenous groups against those in government-managed protection zones. This research shows that indigenous peoples and local communities are investing substantially in conserving their forests up to $1.71 billion in the developing world, the authors write. The figure amounts to between 16 and 23 percent of what the conservation establishment governments, multilateral organizations, bilateral aid agencies, NGOs, foundations and private entities spends each year. Through labor and capital put toward managing, protecting and rehabilitating forests, indigenous communities were found to achieve equal or better conservation outcomes at a significant discount. [Indigenous peoples] are achieving at least equal conservation results with a fraction of the budget of protected areas, making investment in indigenous peoples themselves the most efficient means of protecting forests, according to the study.  The findings add a quantitative dimension to a growing body of literature showing indigenous groups to be forest guardians without peer. Their lands, home to some of the richest forests left, are thought to hold a quarter of the globes remaining aboveground carbon, and possibly much more. In the Brazilian Amazon, for example, deforestation in lands inhabited by indigenous peoples was found to

Axel, Junge, geh doch lieber in Wrde in Rente. Schlimm genug, dass der Steuerzahler dir eine Altersvorsorge zahlt, deinen Whlern aber nicht. Sei dankbar und halte die Fe still.
