Nearly 2 million animals, mostly wildebeest and zebra, migrate roughly 800 kilometers (500 miles) each year between Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Maasai Mara National Reserve across the border in Kenya. Their joint search for fresh green grass is an ecological phenomenon and a major tourist attraction in both countries. A few of the participants in the annual Serengeti-Mara wildebeest migration. Image by Sue Palminteri/Mongabay But along with tourists, this profusion of animals also attracts bushmeat poachers. Each year, poachers from the western edge of the Serengeti follow the herd into Kenya. Along the way, they kill between 40,000 and 100,000 wildebeest, zebra and other grazers each year, according to Brian Heath, CEO of the Mara Conservancy. The conservancy manages a portion of the Maasai Mara reserve called the Mara Triangle, perhaps best known for the annual crossing by the wildebeest of the crocodile-laden Mara River. Heath spoke with Mongabay-Wildtech about security, his biggest conservation challenge there, as well as his teams use of forward-looking infrared (FLIR) thermal imaging sensors in their ongoing effort to keep poaching of the famous migrating wildebeest and other wildlife at bay. Poachers typically kill the animals by setting wire snares, made from steel stripped from old tires. Theres a whole business doing this, Heath said, referring to local production of the many thousands of snares used illegally within the two reserves. Last year we collected 7,000 snares [in the Mara Triangle], the year before was the same. A wire snare formed from the

BROOKLYN, N.Y. Wunderkind ASCII artist darknessblade95 accepted a lucrative contract for an upcoming Final Fantasy VII GameFAQs strategy guide, sparking much debate in the New York City art scene.
Darknessblade95, born Mary Smith, announced the news with this update on her GeoCities page:
So theres been a ton of speculation about the GameFAQs thing and I just want to clear the air. I accepted! This could be a stepping stone to big opportunities like Myspace profiles and email signatures XD
Shes a sellout, plain and simple, fellow ASCII artist bLaCkRaIn1991 told Hard Drive via a Google Hangout that he kept referring to as the long-dead GChat. The scene was all about making raw, edgy art with the international standard for character encoding in electronic communication. All those lines of letters, numbers, and punctuation used to mean something. Not anymore, I guess. Not anymore.
The outcry against darknessblade95 was swift and venomous. Many fans printed her pieces on their parents computers so they could burn them outside her Brooklyn studio. One livid man even threw acid at her ASCII Crash Bandicoot currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art. The alleged vandal was later apprehended after bragging about the attack in a Club Penguin chat room.
Despite the backlash from her peers, GameFAQs was quick to defend the Spike TV Guys Choice Award-winning artist.
We couldnt be more excited about this new partnership, said GameFAQs spokesman iloveyuna69. Were leveraging darknessblade95s unique talent for thought-provoking art to enrich the 100-page .txt documents that made our brand famous. When players need an insanely detailed list of every gummi ship item in Kingdom Hearts or the full script for Blinx: The Time Sweeper, we know theyll come to GameFAQs.
At press time, darknessblade95s was familiarizing herself with the numerous free ASCII art generators available online. She told Hard Drive that although she used to look down on people that used them, they were now a necessity in her new role with the GameFAQs corporation.....

Turkish wedding photographer Onur Albayrak is being hailed as a hero this week after the photographer admitted to beating up a client when he learned that the mans bride-to-be was only 15 years old.
Hurriyet Daily News reports that Albayrak had been hired to photograph the July 5th wedding at Turgut zal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya. On the day of, when he noticed that the bride-to-be didnt look like an adult, he asked the groom her age and learned that she was only 15.
The groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone, Albayrak tells the Daily News. I saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. Shes a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.
Albayrak then reportedly refused to continue as the wedding photographer and attempted to stop the wedding.
I cant take pictures of a child bride, Albayrak reportedly told the client, who angrily argued that Albayrak was bound by their contract to shoot the wedding.
The argument soon turned physical when the groom attacked him as he was attempting to leave, Albayrak says. The photographer ended up breaking the clients nose in the fight, according to local reports.
Albayrak confirmed the reports in a Facebook post, which has been met with widespread approval, attra...
When a small, but potent, percent of the population is ready to expand their range of possibilities and validate new information, putting aside the egos opinion in favor of exploration, then change for the many is possible. Change, when called for, is something we need not approach with trepidation although we often do.
Yes, it requires energy and focus, dedication and often bravery and sacrifice. It also requires true knowledge, which is sometimes gained not by science, but by experience. Our willingness to enter new ground depends upon that interesting question what am I here for? To lay in the cut? And whats the cut the injury?
One thing we can know, right now, as we take a look outside, and take a deep breath, and remember ourselves our value is here, in our human existence. Dig it its good to be here. This is the place where we can act, and see a response.
Lately Ive been consuming information like the owl eats its food Ill take it in and then just throw out what doesnt nourish me. If theres something that feels like it could be a match for whats already incorporated, Ill work it around digest it.
I imagine we all look for solutions in our own way. For me, the process is to seek the intuitive hit that will show me whatever is at the heart of the matter the problem causing suffering. Recently I came across some information that opened me up to a broader landscape with regard to the subconscious mind/dimension and the masculine and feminine polarities.
Amazingly, upon taking in this information, a few other things started to click the sin of Eve, the idea that the feminine divinity is subject to the masculine divinity, the fear of the woman trying to take control or manipulating with hidden power.
This stuff has caused a rift for long enough. Has anyone attempted to grasp t...

The bizarre sonic attacks against diplomats began in Cuba, but have now spread to other countries with over 200 illnesses reported. It all started in the fall of 2016 when diplomats at the United States Embassy in Cuba reported some hearing loss and mild brain damage after hearing unusual and puzzling sounds.
SHTFPlan originally detailed the symptoms experienced by US diplomats in Cuba back in September of 2017.
Several of the affected diplomats were recent arrivals at the embassy, which reopened in 2015 as part of Barack Obamas reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba. The Daily Mail reported that one diplomat described being jolted awake in a Havana hotel room by a grinding, blaring cacophony. When he moved a few feet across the room, the noise stopped. When he got back into bed, the agonizing sound hit him again; as if, he told doctors, he had walked through some invisible wall cutting straight down the middle of his room. SHTFPlan
But now, the sonic attacks have progressed beyond Cuba. Other embassies have now reported the debilitating conditions of diplomats. The U.S. State Department has remained all but silent on the issue as well, other than to characterize their suspicion as unknown sonic attacks targeted U.S. diplomats, according to WND.
Diplomats in at least seven cities in four different countries have sought testing for strange symptoms. The victims symptoms include hearing loss, dizziness, tinnitus, balance problems, visual difficulties, headaches, fatigue, cogn...
Over a decade later (and a revival I could debate for hours on end), the original Gilmore Girls series still remains one of my all-time favorite TV shows. The same age as Rory Gilmores character, I was inspired by everything from her wardrobe to her never-ending reading list throughout my high school and college years. Would I have dove into the desperate world of Tolstoys Anna Karenina, learned about Ayn Rand or embraced the mini skirt and jumper combination without a little nudge from Rory? Im doubtful.
Although the focus of the show was never on interiors per se, the quaint little town of Stars Hollow and the homes featured in it always resonated with me as warm, inviting, and most importantly, exuding quirky personality. All this considered, its somewhat ironic that one of my favorite interior moments from Gilmore Girls one thats stuck with me for all these years has less...

AUSTIN, Texas A local Iron Maiden T-shirt came to the sudden realization yesterday, to its horror and disgust, that it was being sold at an Urban Outfitters retailer, according to sources also on display near the shirts rack.
Im not gonna lie. This is a serious let down, lamented the shirt, featuring longtime Iron Maiden mascot Eddie as The Trooper. I figured, when I was still in the box, that Id be unveiled at a live Iron Maiden show maybe a fest or something. Id already come to terms with being sold to a bald guy with a ponytail who lives in a van.
I realized I wasnt at Monsters of Rock when I saw so many younger customers, which OK, whatever, the shirt added. But on a rack at Urban Outfitters, between IDK Not Trump Tho shirts and rainbow-striped denim halter rompers? I dont think I deserve this. I thought I saw someone walk by with an Ozzy bobblehead, but other than that, I dont fit in with anything here.
The wistful shirt, fondly remembering production alongside other metal shirts, questioned how it arrived in such a lowly establishment.
When I was fresh off of the press, I was so pumped all my neighbors were Slayer, Megadeth, and Judas Priest shirts, said the shirt, trying to hide itself behind a Mr. Bubble display. Man. I sure hope those guys ended up in a better place than I did. I wouldnt even wish this on a Five Finger Death Punch shirt.
When reached for comment, an Urban Outfitters salesperson unfamiliar with the metal band admitted her excitement for the latest merchandise.
I actually kind of like these new shirts. Theyre pretty fierce, noted shift lead Megan Tucker. The name Iron Maiden is fire! If I had to guess, Id think maybe shes a designer probably from London or Paris or something.
These shirts would look super cute if maybe I could upcycle them into crop tops, she added. Insta would lose their shit!
+CityxChange is set to put the IOTA (MIOTA) Tangle technology to the test again in a multi-point, smart city project that has just received the green light and funding from the European Union.
Following the successful partnership with Taipei to create the first ever blockchain based smart city project, IOTA with +CityxChange will take on this much more expansive challenge over the next five years. Working with the cities of Trondheim, Limerick, Alba Iulia, Pisek, Sestao, Smolyan and Voru to become smart, positive energy cities, with the goal of using digital services to generate more energy than they consume and to share their experiences with cities all across Europe.
IOTA, as part of this visionary project, has another opportunity for the network to prove its utility in a real-world situation, before a massive audience. The platform will play a critical role in the +cityxChange project by offering decision making support and providing the tools participants require to be successful. The final result is hoped to be a positive energy block that reduces energy use and wastage using peer to peer energy trades through a flexible local depository.
As this is a community-based project +cityxChange is looking for a top-down change in energy use behavior from local authorities. According to the Head of Business Development at IOTA, Wilfred Pimenta:
Smart cities is one of the fastest growing cross-sectorial arenas of innovation for IOTA. Building on our work and partnerships across mobility, energy or data marketplace, these smart city ecosystems bring it all together. The +CityxChange consortium gathers many public and private partners around an ambitious open innovation and co-creation initiative. This is 100% aligned to IOTA Foundations DNA and we cant wait to get started.
The project is expected to get started in on January 1, 2019. The entire project is to be funded jointly with 20 million Euros coming from the European Research and Innovation program, Horizon 2020. This will be matched with 10 million Euros from some of the project partners which will go to ensuring implementation in the...
New blockchain project Constellation Labs for consumer grade applications development announced the listing of its DAG token on KuCoin exchange, following the recent launch of their developer community Orion. Orion has an award system for participants and will be used for the testnet at the beginning of August.
The main feature of Constellation is that its network is proportional to user adoption. That is to say, its throughput is about 4000 to 4800 transactions per second (tps) with a 1200 node cluster. In comparison, the Bitcoin network has an average capacity of fewer than 4 tps, and Ethereum is about 15 tps.
This is achieved through harnessing dynamically partitioned consensus that allows the network to scale the number of tps. Reputation-based incentives eliminate transaction fees between users. Constellation uses Proof-of-Meme (PoM) protocol, letting individuals directly contribute to the improvement and monitoring of the chain by utilizing computing power from their own smart devices. PoM rewards those who improve a nodes overall reputation within the system.
The Constellation protocol aims to solve the primary challenge of scalability in the blockchain, providing a solution that is highly resource-efficient and exponentially scalable, said Constellation CTO Wyatt Meldman-Floch.
Constellation deploys smart contracts as microservices so that services can be chained and composed into distributed applications. Microservices is an approach to application development in which a large application is built as a suite of modular services. Each module supports a specific business goal and uses a simple, well-defined interface to communicate with other sets of services. Microservices are concurrent processes, unlike smart contracts which must be in every node.
Community platform to help network development
Constellation launched their portal Orion on June 18th, calling it a flagship product. The purpose of Orion is to induce the developer community around the project federating all of Constellations information a...

The developer of a high-end underground residential housing project advertised as a five star playground with DEFCON 1 preparedness is the subject of a federal criminal complaint after he agreed to launder money for Colombian drug cartels.
John Eckerd owner and manager of the $330 million Trident Lakes condo project, along with an unnamed co-conspirator accepted money they thought to be the proceeds from the Colombian drug trade but it was actually undercover FBI agents according to Dallas local station CBS 11.
The court documents allege Eckerd, 54, and an unidentified co-conspirator accepted $200,000 in purported drug money from undercover FBI agents over the past year. The federal sting culminated in February with Eckerd allegedly agreeing to launder $1 million from Colombian drug dealers through Trident Lakes, a planned 700-acre residential project in rural Fannin County.
An undercover FBI agent posing as a former narcotics trafficker learned of Eckerd last September when the unidentified co-conspirator, who lives in New Jersey, suggested that Eckerds development in rural Fannin County could be used to launder narcotics profits.
Eckerd, a McKinney resident, has been out on $100,000 bond since March. His attorney, Dallas defense lawyer Bob Webster, declined an on-camera interview, but questioned the charges against his client. CBS 11

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, one of Chinas Big Four state owned commercial banks and among the worlds largest by total asset, is seeking to patent a blockchain system for the exchange of monetary assets. Based on a patent application filed with the bank in January and shown on Friday, the system envisions a platform where participating institutions can function as nodes to create a dispersed network. When an individual from one institution starts a transaction request, it triggers a wise contract causing each node to validate the transaction based on the information supplied, including the balance of the senders account, the name and the transaction amount.
A transaction will be considered complete when the network has obtained sufficient validation from participating nodes such as consensus over a pre determined threshold. The target of the concept, based on the document, is to eliminate intermediaries from existing system and increase the liquidity of financial assets. The ICBC said in the filing that the study originated because the existing system is slow and pricey when sending interbank or cross border transactions for both regular obligations and monetary instruments, like precious metals and futures. The document states: The traditional transaction chain thats constructed around a centered credibility system incurs issues such as the high price, low efficiency, low stability, along with inflexibility.
This hastens the banks launch-to marketplace process to meet the rapidly growing demand for advanced financial products. The patent application marks the banks latest filing linked to blockchain technology, in accordance with the China State Intellectual Property Office. As previously reported by CoinDesk, the bank is also seeking to patent a blockchain system that may confirm user info over a distributed network. Based on the information report from the South China Morning Post, ICBC took over Well Fargo to become the largest bank in the world by total assets as of January 2017. The institution held 24.9 trillion yuan in assets as of the end of 2017, as an its latest financial report.

LOS ANGELES In 2001, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the United States to photograph people of mixed-race backgrounds specifically those who, like himself, identified as partially of Asian and/or Pacific Islander descent. He took over 1,200 portraits on that journey, and also had each subject contribute brief handwritten notes, each answering the question, What are you?.
In 2006, a selection of Fulbecks pictures were showcased in an exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum, kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa (later turned into a book of the same name). This was the beginning of the Hapa Project, an ongoing multimedia exploration of multiethnic Asian identity. The latest entry in the project is Fulbecks new exhibition at JANM: hapa.me, an update to his original series which revisits its subjects. The exhibition space for hapa.me (photo by the author for Hyperallergic)
The second series replicates the format of the first one. Once again, Fulbeck photographs each subject and has them write down a response to What are you?. Once again, the exhibit has a space in which visitors can have their own pictures taken, write their own responses to the question, and have them stuck to the wall. Yoga has reached an apex since its emergence, from at least pre-3000 B.C. based on archeological findings, amalgamating the lush heritage of the East with the practical science of the West, and combining the numinous with the practical in a very palpable manner.
There are now thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers which explain yogas efficacy as a healing modality for diseases as varied as cancer, depression, diabetes, and cardiovascular failure, and the mystical aspects of yoga have been passed down, either in classes meant for the masses, or through heavily guarded transmissions bestowed by a master to his or her select students. However, some of yogas most esoteric aspects are only taught to those who are deemed ready to take those powers into the world.

This is so cool. The UKs current heatwave is exposing the outline of ancient hill forts and settlements. As the UK heatwave continues, the shadows of ancient settlements have begun appearing in the fields.
Ancient ditches create lines of deeper soil, retaining more moisture and meaning the crops grow thicker.

WordPress is, without a doubt, the most popular website management system in use. The latest statistics put the number of websites running on WordPress over 60 million, and those include many popular news/media, company/brand, and personal sites. Attackers who seek to take over websites for a variety of malicious purposes couldnt be happier about this: a zero-day or recently patched vulnerability in the CMS (or a popular WP plugin, extension, or theme) can open many More

IQ scores have been steadily falling for the past few decades, and environmental factors are to blame, a new study says. Norwegian researchers analyzed the IQ scores of Norwegian men born between 1962 and 1991 and found that scores increased by almost 3 percentage points each decade for those born between 1962 to 1975 - but then saw a steady decline among those born after 1975. Studies in Denmark, Britain, France, the Netherlands, Finland and Estonia have demonstrated a similar downward trend in IQ scores. "The causes in IQ increases over time and now the decline is due to environmental factors," said [study co-author Ole] Rogeburg. These environmental factors could include changes in the education system and media environment, nutrition, reading less and being online more, Rogeberg said. Researchers have long preferred to use genes to explain variations in intelligence over environmental factors. However, the new study turns this thinking on its head. Intelligence is heritable, and for a long time, researchers assumed that people with high IQ scores would have kids who also scored above average. Moreover, it was thought that people with lower scores would have more kids than people with high IQ scores. The study not only showed IQ variance between children the same parents, but because the authors had the IQ scores of various parents, it demonstrated that parents with higher IQs tended to have more kids, ruling out the dysgenic fertility theory as a driver of falling IQ scores.
Note: This New York Times article shows that pesticide exposure can affect IQ. And this Newsweek article shows how flame retardants can harm IQ. For more along these lines, see concise summaries of deeply revealing health news articles from reliable major media sources.
Chinese researchers are working on a new handheld laser weapon capable of burning skin and clothing from up to half a mile away. Boasts about the ... laser rifle's capabilities come amid a diplomatic row between the US and China over the use of blinding lasers on military aircraft. The new laser rifle will be used by anti-terrorism squads in the Chinese Armed Police, the South China Morning Post reports, with prototypes of the device already being tested ... at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The ZKZM assault rifle causes "instant carbonisation" of human tissue, according to the researchers behind it, and will "burn through clothes in a split second. " The unnamed researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences added: "If the fabric is flammable, the whole person will be set on fire." While the gun is not powerful enough to kill someone, the researcher said: "The pain will be beyond endurance." Aerospace and defence giant Lockheed Martin has previously developed laser beam systems that can be attached to planes or ground-based vehicles. In May, the Pentagon made a formal complaint to the Chinese government over Chinese nationals allegedly pointing lasers at US planes in east Africa. While there has been no word on when China's new laser gun might see service, the US Navy recently announced its own $300 million research fund aimed at creating a family of laser weapons for its fleet. In 2016, the US military said it would be deploying laser weapons as early as 2023.
Note: China was reported in 2006 to be using lasers to blind American spy satellites. For more along these lines, see concise summaries of deeply revealing non-lethal weapons news articles from reliable major media sources.
A record-breaking fundraiser started by Dave and Charlotte Willner to help families separated at the border continues exceeding all expectations. While President Trump signed an executive order to halt his policy of breaking up families, the Willners said some of the $16 million raised will help a nonprofit to return children to their families. The additional money raised by the Willners will help Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) provide lawyers to immigrants as well as reunite families. The Willners said RAICES has unified three families already. The fundraiser first started after the Willners saw the photo of a 2-year-old Honduran girl crying at the border and they thought immediately of their own 2-year-old daughter. They felt they had to act so they started a fundraiser on Facebook, hoping to raise $1,500 for RAICES. It soon became clear this was no ordinary fundraiser. At one point, people were donating between $2,000 and $4,000 a minute, the family shared. The average donation is $38. As the fundraiser neared $5 million dollars, Facebook updated its platform so that the family could continue raising money. The Willners were among Facebook's first employees, and now both work at different tech companies in Silicon Valley. They raised more than $16 million in five days for the RAICES, and the Willners reset their goal to $20 million.
Note: The donations continue to pour in and now exceed $20 million. Explore a treasure trove of concise summaries of incredibly inspiring news articles which will inspire you to make a difference.
ABCC is another exchange trying to reward users with AT and ToM. Today we are going to discover how bitcoin-like mechanism and a principle of fixed number of tokens generated via half-life cycle with Simultaneous Release differentiate the new approach from others
While some want to lower the exchange fee, the others reward traders. Recently a new method was adopted by the ABCC trading platform. They are using ToM mechanism to provide users with bonuses. AT (ABCC Token) Mining rules have been discussed extensively even before the official AT issuance on July 9, because the growing trading amount of the platform promises an interesting future for AT. Today we are discovering new concerns and new opportunities, evolving with the new cryptocurrency.
What is ToM?
The interesting thing about ABCC token is its issuance. The company is implementing Trade-to-Mine (ToM) mechanism. Users mine AT tokens via trading activities, while each block releases a fixed amount of AT every 6-hours. 50% of them will be provided to the active traders (40%) and old platform users (10%). The rest will be issued simultaneously to investors, the team and the platform itself. It means, the more you trade, the more you mine. The stats are collected and published every chain block issuance every 6 hours. So, the entire community is watching the AT distribution process.
Same but different
If we look back, we will observe some more incentives for ToM-related projects. But ABCCs approach is quite different. First of all, AT will be generated in a Bitcoin-like mode to cap the natural inflation. So, every half-life period of 120 days, the number of tokens issued will be halved. It means that the total number of AT will never exceed 210 million. In the first cycle, 350k ATs will be issued every day, in the second cycle th...

Imagine if safety were an afterthought in automobiles: Manufacturers would create a pristine new car and then hand it off to the safety teamwhich would bolt airbags onto the dashboard, seatbelts onto the side panels, and bumpers onto both ends. And if they were under a lot of pressure to get the car to dealers as quickly as possible, they might just leave off some of this stuff, ship the car to the dealer, and More

Hillary Clinton may be plotting a secret rematch between herself and president Donald Trump in 2020, according to one speculative report. It wouldnt be out of the question for a politician as corrupt as Hillary to try it again, but will she?
According to an opinion piece published by the New York Post, Hillary Clinton just might want to be the Democrat nominee to face off against Trump in a mere two years, and once again, vying for the pregnancy.
The messages convey a sense of urgency and are coming with increasing frequency. They are short, focused reactions to the latest outrage committed by President Trump.
Some end by asking for money, some urge participation in protests. All read as if they are sent from the official headquarters of the resistance. Michael Goodwin, The New York Post
The article went on to tout Hillary Clintons money-making ability and ability to distribute said money among groups that lobby for liberal causes before writing this:
Not long ago, I told a group of friends, all liberal Dems, that I believed she was keeping open the possibility of a rematch against Trump, and might already have decided to run.
It was unanimous they were horrified. I would not give her a single cent, one man, formerly a big donor to Clinton, said emphatically. Michael Goodwin, The New York Post
According to the Daily Mail, the corrupt democrat has been appearing at high-profile events, such as those for the Clinton Foundation and at Oxford University. In addition to these such events, shes taken to asking for donations to causes...

This is a rather mysterious or at least poorly documented Mosin Nagant carbine variation. Made from an assortment of rifles dated from 1896 through 1920, these carbines were designed to fit Gulkevich folding bayonets. They have a barrel just slightly longer than a 1907 carbine, but were fitted with 1907 Carbine rear sights. They were also fitted with metal sheaths alongside the rear sights to retain the tip of the folding bayonet, as well as new sling swivels on the left side of the stock and barrel band.
Basically no documentation has been published explaining the origin and purpose of these carbines, but hopefully some will eventually be found. The best hypothesis I am aware of at this time is that the carbines were made by and for the St Petersburg Cavalry School.
