Blockchain has been one of the hottest sectors in tech over the past couple of years, with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum soaring in value as they captured the publics attention. But blockchain has applications well beyond underpinning cryptocurrencies, including gaming and art. On that latter front, a new initiative aims to raise money and awareness for conservation by leveraging the popularity of CryptoKitties, one of the worlds first blockchain games. A CryptoKitty is effectively a digital collectible a piece of electronic art that is unique, tradable, and can be bred to produce more CryptoKitties. While the concept may seem abstract to the uninitiated, there is currently a market for CryptoKitties in May, one Kitty sold for $140,000 at auction. More than $20 million in CryptoKitties have been transacted to date. Seeking to capitalize on this interest, Axiom Zen, the company behind CryptoKitties, has just created Honu, a sea turtle-inspired CryptoKitty, in partnership with NGOs Ocean Elders and ACTAI Global. On Monday, Axiom Zen and the two groups put Honu up for auction, aiming to raise money for sea turtle conservation efforts in the Caribbean by supporting the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in Antigua and Barbuda and Unite BVI. The bid stood at $25,000 as of 6 pm Pacific time on July 10th. If the pilot proves successful, the idea could be expanded says Axiom Zens Cassidy Robertson, who spoke to Mongabay about how blockchain games could help conservation efforts. AN INTERVIEW WITH CASSIDY ROBERTSON Mongabay: What
An investigation by Mongabay has uncovered new evidence suggesting one of the worlds biggest paper producers, Indonesias Asia Pulp & Paper, took deliberate measures to disguise its ownership of a controversial company engaged in deforestation. The revelation comes after repeated denials by APP that it owns the company, as its opaque corporate structure has been dragged into the spotlight. Two of APPs ex-employees interviewed by Mongabay said management had used their names on official filings for the company, PT Muara Sungai Landak, which has been cutting down tropical forest on the island of Borneo to make way for a pulpwood plantation now half the size of Manhattan. One said that he had received a monthly payment to compensate for the arrangement, and that he had been afraid to protest for fear of losing his job. Their accounts, and that of a third ex-employee who provided insight into APPs inner workings, contradict assertions made in recent months by the paper giant that it has no relationship with Muara Sungai Landak. The findings place APP squarely in the middle of an emerging debate about the presence of shadow companies among the holdings of the family-owned conglomerates that dominate Indonesias plantation sector. Under pressure from civil society groups, many of these business groups have promised to stop deforesting. But it is becoming increasingly clear they are using a variety of methods to conceal their control of troublesome assets. APP belongs to the billionaire Widjaja family, which has investments in a wide range of
On this episode of the podcast we discuss the increasing use of drones by wildlife lovers, researchers, and businesses, how that might be stressing animals out, and how drone hobbyists can make a meaningful contribution to science while avoiding wildlife harassment. Listen here: Our guest is Alicia Amerson, a marine biologist, drone user, and science communicator. She tells us why its critical to have best practices for drones in place not only to guide hobbyists making videos of whales or birds, but especially before companies like Amazon.com deploy fleets of drones in our skies. After getting a Masters degree in marine biodiversity and conservation from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, Amerson spent two seasons on a research project flying drones over mother whales and their calves in Australia. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs, are a hot topic in conservation research these days. Theyre used to monitor coral reefs and wildlife for instance, and can actually be used to produce wildlife population counts much more quickly and accurately than traditional methods allow. But when Amerson returned home to California from Australia, she noticed the use of drones on the coastline was becoming much more common, especially among drone hobbyists and wildlife lovers. She was alarmed: wildlife like seabirds, seals, and sea lions on the California coast are often disturbed by humans, and the drones were just adding another level of disturbance. Thats when Amerson convened a group of experts to develop

ZIMUNYA COMMUNAL LAND, Zimbabwe Christopher Zimunya, a 72-year-old leader of the indigenous VaJindwi people in eastern Zimbabwe, beamed as he spoke about pangolins. Sitting on the veranda of his small, thriving convenience shop at 22 Miles Business Centre, Zimunya told Mongabay that pangolins are revered in this part of the country, an area known as Zimunya communal land. Pangolins are sacred here and we guard them jealously, he said with a smile. These animals are really beautiful and finding one brings a lot of good luck to the person who finds it and its a taboo to kill it. Asian stocks of the scaly mammals are fast dwindling for the illegal international trade. Traffickers are now targeting African pangolins for new supply, raising fears in Zimbabwe that they could wipe out the countrys last pangolins. However, traditional leaders, with the support of the Zimbabwean government, are taking a strong role in protecting the countrys remaining pangolins. They are reminding their communities of age-old myths and beliefs about pangolins, as well as imposing heavy fines on those who harm them, to instill a sense of collective responsibility among the people. Christopher Zimunya, a traditional leader of VaJindwi people in eastern Zimbabwe, explains the importance of pangolins. Image by Andrew Mambondiyani for Mongabay. Scaly and endangered Pangolins are sought after in China and Vietnam, where the meat is considered a delicacy and the scales are used in traditional medicines for various ailments (although there is no evidence of their efficacy). In 2014, the
When large wildfires in the forests of the western United States generate dramatic headlines, it can be particularly tempting for climate activists to adopt negative messages about wildfire and link them with global warming as a means of building public concern about dangers from anthropogenic climate change. While such efforts are well-intentioned, in this essay I examine how negative messages about wildfire will ultimately backfire for climate activists by inadvertently giving cover to logging schemes that are harmful to forests and the climate. There are two key aspects of the forest fire issue that makes it a particularly tricky territory for climate activists. The first is that human-caused mechanized wildfire suppression by the US Forest Service and similar agencies has caused a significant shortage of fire in forests of the western US over the past century and continuing to this day. Fire is a natural and beneficial component of western forests, just like rain is. Mixed-severity fires create great wildlife habitat and stimulate nutrient cycling that enables the long-term vitality of the forest. Thus, the anthropogenic shortage of fire is harmful to forests. In this human-altered context, an increase in fire amount from the current depressed levels actually functions as an ecological recovery for forest ecosystems. The second tricky aspect of the forest fire issue is the role of the Forest Service, the timber industry, and other logging proponents. Faced with widespread public concern over the damage from logging on national forests, in the 1990s and 2000s the Forest Service
Kennt ihr den schon? "Feminist Apparel CEO admits sexual misconduct and fires staff"?
Staff at the clothing brand Feminist Apparel found out their CEO had admitted to sexual misconduct - and were fired within days of confronting him about it.Und was hat der CEO zu seiner Verteidigung vorzubringen?
He said the nine former employees were let go legally and that they did not share his views on "feminism or business"."feminism or business", ja?
Money Quote:
The whole thing was highly unprofessional, she continued. There was zero reason for him to be there. He wanted to vent his anger, and he had the power to command a woman to stand there while he took his feelings out on her, so he did. Then he walked out, [the manager] got my stuff from my desk and the HR person asked for my key card. Was fr ein fieser Fiesling!
Ghostery blendet jetzt Werbung ein. Und zwar so richtig monster-frech:
Ghostery nennt die Werbeanzeigen "Rewards", also Belohnungen.
Still, indeed.
