Governments shut down the internet more often than ever, report says "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

More countries shut down the internet in 2022 than ever before, according to a new report by digital rights researchers. Authorities in 35 countries instituted internet shutdowns at least 187 times, according to the New York-based digital rights watchdog Access Now. Nearly half of these shutdowns occurred in India, and if that nation is excluded, 2022 saw the most number of shutdowns globally since the group began monitoring disruptions in 2016. [The] report ... spans complete blackouts, suspensions of specific phone networks or social media apps, and the slowing down of internet speeds. Triggers for shutdowns have included large protests, conflict situations, elections and even examinations. Whatever the situation, they make it substantially more difficult for people to communicate and receive or send news, and they incur significant economic costs, which prompted the United Nations last year to call for governments to avoid using such a blunt tactic. "This can be a big warning sign of how the human rights situation is deteriorating, and shutdowns are often associated with increased levels of insecurity and other restrictions," said Liz Throssell, a spokeswoman at the U.N. Human Rights Office. A majority of [India's] 84 disruptions were logged in Indian-administered Kashmir, part of a disputed region in the Himalayas. India has at times cited a desire to control social unrest in the territory, where there is a separatist movement. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and mass civilian protests in Iran also led to internet shutdowns

U.S. regulators rejected Elon Musk's bid to test brain chips in humans, citing safety risks "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

On at least four occasions since 2019, Elon Musk has predicted that his medical device company, Neuralink, would soon start human trials of a revolutionary brain implant to treat intractable conditions such as paralysis and blindness. Yet the company, founded in 2016, didn't seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until early 2022 and the agency rejected the application. Musk has detailed a bold vision for Neuralink: Both disabled and healthy people will pop into neighborhood facilities for speedy surgical insertions of devices with functions ranging from curing obesity, autism, depression or schizophrenia to web-surfing and telepathy. Musk also has said Neuralink would restore full mobility to paralyzed patients. Reuters exclusively reported late last year that the federal government was investigating the company's treatment of its research animals. The probe was launched amid growing employee concern that the company is rushing experiments, causing additional suffering and deaths of pigs, sheep and monkeys. Musk's company ... trails at least one direct rival in the race for FDA approval. Synchron, a competitor making a BCI implant, has won the agency's blessing for human trials. The company first tested its device on four patients in Australia who successfully sent text messages with their minds. Synchron recently raised $75 million, including from funds backed by tech billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.

'Aims': the software for hire that can control 30,000 fake online profiles "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Advanced Impact Media Solutions, or Aims, which controls more than 30,000 fake social media profiles, can be used to spread disinformation at scale and at speed. It is sold by "Team Jorge", a unit of disinformation operatives based in Israel. Tal Hanan, who runs the covert group using the pseudonym "Jorge", told undercover reporters that they sold access to their software to unnamed intelligence agencies, political parties and corporate clients. Team Jorge's Aims software ... is much more than a bot-controlling programme. Each avatar ... is given a multifaceted digital backstory. Aims enables the creation of accounts on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, Gmail, Instagram and YouTube. Some even have Amazon accounts with credit cards, bitcoin wallets and Airbnb accounts. Hanan told the undercover reporters his avatars mimicked human behaviour and their posts were powered by artificial intelligence. [Our reporters] were able to identify a much wider network of 2,000 Aims-linked bots on Facebook and Twitter. We then traced their activity across the internet, identifying their involvement ... in about 20 countries including the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Panama, Senegal, Mexico, Morocco, India, the United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe, Belarus and Ecuador. The analysis revealed a vast array of bot activity, with Aims' fake social media profiles getting involved in a dispute in California over nuclear power; a #MeToo controversy in Canada ... and an election in Senegal.

FBI, Pentagon helped research facial recognition for street cameras, drones "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The FBI and the Defense Department were actively involved in research and development of facial recognition software that they hoped could be used to identify people from video footage captured by street cameras and flying drones, according to thousands of pages of internal documents that provide new details about the government's ambitions to build out a powerful tool for advanced surveillance. The documents, revealed in response to an ongoing Freedom of Information Act lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union filed against the FBI, show how closely FBI and Defense officials worked with academic researchers to refine artificial-intelligence techniques that could help in the identification or tracking of Americans without their awareness or consent. Many of the records relate to the Janus program, a project funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency, or IARPA. The improved facial recognition system was ultimately folded into a search tool, called Horus, and made available to the Pentagon's Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, which helps provide military technologies to civilian police forces. No federal laws regulate how facial recognition systems can be used. The tool's use in domestic mass surveillance would be a "nightmare scenario," said Nathan Wessler, a deputy director at the ACLU. "It could give the government the ability to pervasively track as many people as they want for as long as they want. There's no good outcome for that in a democratic society."

C.I.A. Is Collecting in Bulk Certain Data Affecting Americans, Senators Warn "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The Central Intelligence Agency has for years been collecting in bulk, without a warrant, some kind of data that can affect Americans' privacy. At the same time, [the C.I.A.] declared that a report about the same topic, which had prompted the letter, must remain fully classified. That report, called "Deep Dive II," was part of a set of studies by a watchdog board scrutinizing intelligence community operations under Executive Order 12333. In March 2021, the Senate Intelligence Committee received a copy of the report. Two Democrats on the panel, Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, urged Avril D. Haines, the director of national intelligence, and William J. Burns, the C.I.A. director, to declassify the activity. The senators suggested that its hidden existence cut against Americans' understanding that various pieces of legislation enacted in recent years "limit and, in some cases, prohibit the warrantless collection of Americans' records." In 2015, Congress banned bulk collection of telecommunications metadata under the Patriot Act and limited other types of bulk collection by the F.B.I. under laws governing domestic activities like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. Yet "the C.I.A. has secretly conducted its own bulk program" under Executive Order 12333, the senators wrote. "It has done so entirely outside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection, and without any of the judicial, congressional or even executive branch oversight."

The U.S. Set Up the Afghan Army to Fail "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

When the Afghan military and government collapsed in the summer of 2021, it was the worst failure of the U.S. defense establishment since the fall of Saigon. A new report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, issued this week sheds critical light on what went so terribly wrong in America's longest war and how tens of thousands of ordinary Afghans were set up by their leaders and foreign partners to fight and die for a doomed cause. The American mission in Afghanistan had been to build an army that could stand on its own feet to resist the Taliban. In the end, however, the Afghan military was not only riddled with corruption, but also designed to function properly only so long as the foreign contractors and soldiers remained around to manage it. In effect, similar to its disastrous experience in South Vietnam, the United States had attempted to build an army suitable for a modern, industrialized country like itself, rather than one that would fit the realities of a poor and agrarian state. "The types of security forces that we were trying to build, which were relatively sophisticated and relied on advanced technology and electronics logistics systems, were just not within the general capacity of what Afghanistan would be able to use in sustainable ways," said Jonathan Schroden, an Afghanistan expert at the Center for Naval Analyses. "The real damning thing about what is in the report is that people had been telling the U.S. military this for years."

Hawkish Israel Is Pulling U.S. Into War With Iran "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Last week, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides appeared to endorse a plan for Israel to attack Iranian nuclear facilities with U.S. support. Nides's words come after recent high-level military drills between Israel and the United States intended to showcase the ability to strike Iranian targets, as well as recent acts of sabotage and assassination inside Iran believed to have been carried out by both countries. The Israeli escalations mean that the U.S. now faces the unsavory prospect of a major crisis flaring up in the Middle East at the exact moment when its bandwidth is already stretched thin because of a major war in Europe and its deteriorating relationship with China. "The decision to leave the JCPOA ... allowed Iran to restart its nuclear program and raise once again the question of what the U.S., Israel, or anyone else might do about it," said Stephen Walt ... at the Harvard Kennedy School, referring to the nuclear deal by the initials of its former name, Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The nuclear deal was intended to avoid the Middle East confrontation now visible on the horizon. Signed by President Barack Obama in 2015, the deal traded strict limits on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for its reintegration into the global economy. When President Donald Trump violated the deal ... this pragmatic arrangement went out the window not only removing limits on Iran's nuclear program, but also politically empowering hard-liners inside Iran who had balked at negotiating in the first place.

Biden's Chip War With China Is an Imperial Struggle for High-Tech Supremacy "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The rivalry between the U.S. and China has hit fever pitch. Despite their deep economic integration and record trade in goods of $690 billion in 2022, the two powers are at loggerheads over everything from military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific to Russia's imperialist invasion of Ukraine, to trade and investment in the Global South. The U.S., of course, remains the world's dominant imperialist power, but now China poses a threat to its hegemony. At the center of this conflict are microchips, which are as important to global capitalism today as oil. Washington put its high-tech weaponry on full display in the 1991 Gulf War. Triumphant, Washington adopted a new imperial strategy of superintending the world economy by incorporating states into a neoliberal world order of free trade globalization. The U.S. used the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization and UN to enforce this order. The U.S. retained its lead in the design of chips, but increasingly fabrication was done by [Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company] in Taiwan. The Trump administration ... targeted Beijing's tech industry. Using national security as justification, the Commerce Department prohibited U.S. companies from selling chips, hardware and software to the company. The Biden administration doubled down on Trump's strategy of great power rivalry. [Author Chris] Miller argues, "Taiwan isn't simply the source of the advanced chips that both countries' militaries are betting on. It's also the most likely battleground."

The Forgotten Terrorist Pretext of the Vietnam War "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Antiterrorist moral fervor and ideological blinders propelled the U.S. into its biggest foreign policy blunder since World War Two. The U.S. government constantly embellished the storyline to demonize the communist opposition. A CIA operative provided materials for a massive bomb that ripped through a main square in Saigon in 1952. A Life magazine photographer was waiting on the scene, and his resulting snap appeared with a caption blaming the carnage on Viet Minh Communists. The Kennedy administration sought credibility by profoundly deceiving the American people and Congress regarding its Vietnam policy. In August 1963, South Vietnamese Special Forces "carried out midnight raids against Buddhist pagodas throughout the country. More than 1400 people, mostly monks were arrested and many of them were beaten," according to the Pentagon Papers. The CIA was bankrolling these Special Forces, which were supposed to be used for covert operations against the Viet Cong or North Vietnam, not for religious repression. The Johnson administration exploited the terrorist label to sway Americans to support greater U.S. Involvement in Vietnam. In a special message to Congress on May 18, 1964 seeking additional fund for Vietnam, LBJ declared, "the Viet Cong guerrillas, under orders from their Communist masters in the North, have intensified terrorist actions against the peaceful people of South Vietnam. This increased terrorism requires increased response."

How a Movement That Never Killed Anyone Became the FBI's No. 1 Domestic Terrorism Threat "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Who the Justice Department decides to prosecute as a domestic terrorist has little to do with the harm they've inflicted or the threat they pose to human life. Police and FBI agents ... arrested a dozen of [activist Joe] Dibee's associates in the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front. They were charged with conspiring to burn down factories that slaughtered animals for meat, timber mills that disrupted sensitive ecosystems, government facilities that penned wild horses, and a ski resort. While the arsons, which never hurt or killed anyone, largely took place in the late 1990s, the wave of arrests known as the "Green Scare" came in the post-9/11 era, when terrorism was the FBI's prevailing obsession. The fur and biomedical industries had spent years lobbying the Justice Department and lawmakers to go after eco-activists. When the planes hit the twin towers, industry groups seized on the opportunity to push legislation, and federal law enforcement ramped up pursuit of radical activists in the name of counterterrorism. Of 70 federal prosecutions of radical environmentalists and animal rights activists identified by The Intercept, 52 did not result in charges under anti-terrorism laws. Yet the defendants were repeatedly called terrorists by the Justice Department. The Patriot Act's broad new definition of domestic terrorism, signed into law in October 2001, was another step toward institutionalizing the notion that eco-saboteurs were terrorists.

If we can farm metal from plants, what else can we learn from life on Earth? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

For the past couple of years, I've been working with researchers in northern Greece who are farming metal. They are experimenting with a trio of shrubs known to scientists as "hyperaccumulators": plants which have evolved the capacity to thrive in naturally metal-rich soils that are toxic to most other kinds of life. They do this by drawing the metal out of the ground and storing it in their leaves and stems, where it can be harvested like any other crop. As well as providing a source for rare metals in this case nickel, although hyperaccumulators have been found for zinc, aluminium, cadmium and many other metals, including gold these plants actively benefit the earth by remediating the soil, making it suitable for growing other crops, and by sequestering carbon in their roots. Hyperaccumulators are far from being the only non-humans that we might learn from. Physarum polycephalum, a particularly lively slime mould, can solve the "travelling salesman" problem a test for finding the shortest route between multiple cities faster and more efficiently than any supercomputer humans have devised. Spiders store information in their webs, using them as a kind of extended cognition: a mind outside the body entirely. A new conception of intelligence is emerging from scientific research: rather than human intelligence being unique or the peak of some graduated curve, there appear to be many different kinds of intelligence with their own strengths, competencies and suitabilities.

Note: This was written by James Bridle, an artist and technologist who was able to paralyze a self-driving car using salt and road markers. Rats with backpacks could help rescue earthquake survivors "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes can level entire towns, and for the search and rescue teams trying to find survivors, it's a painstaking task. But an unlikely savior is being trained up to help out: rats. The project, conceived of by Belgian non-profit APOPO, is kitting out rodents with tiny, high-tech backpacks to help first responders search for survivors among rubble in disaster zones. "Rats are typically quite curious and like to explore and that is key for search and rescue," says Donna Kean, a behavioral research scientist and leader of the project. In addition to their adventurous spirit, their small size and excellent sense of smell make rats perfect for locating things in tight spaces, says Kean. The rats are currently being trained to find survivors in a simulated disaster zone. They must first locate the target person in an empty room, pull a switch on their vest that triggers a beeper, and then return to base, where they are rewarded with a treat. While the rodents are still in the early stages of training, APOPO is collaborating with the Eindhoven University of Technology to develop a backpack, which is equipped with a video camera, two-way microphone, and location transmitter to help first responders communicate with survivors. APOPO has been training dogs and rats at its base in Tanzania in the scent detection of landmines and tuberculosis for over a decade. Its programs use African Giant Pouched Rats, which have a longer lifespan in captivity of around eight years.

Mobilising Assam's 'hargila army': how 10,000 women saved India's rarest stork "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Some of the women are wearing papier-mache headdresses shaped like long-necked birds. As they sing, one of them gets to her feet and starts dancing. They are part of the "hargila army", a group of rural women in the Indian state of Assam who work to protect one of the world's rarest storks: the greater adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius) or hargila (meaning "bone swallower" in Assamese) as the scavenger bird is known locally. They are celebrating the recent UN Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth award, conferred on the group's biologist founder, Dr Purnima Devi Barman. Barman won the award for her achievement in mobilising more than 10,000 women to help save the stork. "They are the protectors of the birds and of their nesting trees," says Barman. The birds were not just reviled, they were seen as a bad omen and carriers of disease. Villagers attacked them with stones, cut down trees where they roosted communally and burned their nests. Today the greater adjutant is endangered, with fewer than 1,200 adult birds in its last strongholds. Most of the global population is found in Assam, making Barman and the hargila army's work critical to its survival. Today, the once-maligned bird is now a cultural symbol, appearing on everything from towels to road-safety campaigns. In the villages of Dadara, Pacharia and Singimari (all in Kamrup district), greater adjutants' nests have increased from 28 in 2010 to more than 250 according to Barman's last count, making the area the world's largest breeding colony.

Soweit, so klar.

Early Exposures to Phthalates Associated with ADHD Symptoms in Children with ASD "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

New Research Uses Data from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) Study

A new UC Davis MIND Institute study has found associations of phenol/parabens mixtures in urine samples of children with autism with increased ADHD symptoms, especially inattention. Predictably, these associations were more pronounced in males. The present studys design included a total of 574 children aged 2-5 years old from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) case-control study who were administered the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). The study focused on the Hyperactivity subscale and its two subdomains (hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention). Then, 62 chemicals from four classes (phenols/parabens, phthalates, organophosphate pesticides, and trace elements) were measured in the participants urine samples. Forty-three chemicals were detected in more than 70% of samples and were used in statistical analyses. After running further mixture analyses on the samples, the team restricted the study to 232 children with ASD. Results showed that the participants inattention problems were associated with mixtures of phenols and parabens, possibly contributed by several parabens and their metabolites (ETPB, PRPB, BUPB, DHB34) and two bisphenols (BPP, BPAP), as well as total mixtures that were weighted for paraben metabolite (DHB34) and two .....

Prenatal Methylmercury Exposures Causes Autism-Like Behaviors in Rodents "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Low-Dose Exposure Led to Impaired Communication, Reduced Sociability, and Repetitive Behaviors

Canadian researchers have discovered that prenatal low-dose methylmercury (MeHg) exposure triggers autism-like behaviors in a rodent model. By studying adult mice that had been prenatally exposed to non-apoptotic (low dose) MeHg, the team noticed the mice exhibited key autism characteristics, including impaired communication, reduced sociability, and increasingly restrictive repetitive behavior. The authors performed early postnatal ultrasonic vocalization analyses on participant mice to test the rodents communication skills. Mouse pups emit calls during their first two weeks when separated from their mother and littermates. The researchers discovered that mice prenatally exposed to low-dose MeHg vocalized significantly less than the control group mice during this period. To examine repetitive behaviors, the team used the Marble Burying test and discovered that mice prenatally treated with low-dose MeHg buried significantly more marbles than control mice. The authors used the adult social interaction test to examine social skills. Once again, the low-dose MeHg mice scored poorly on this test. The team also found that mice prenatally treated with low-dose MeHg showed poor reversal memory, similar to genetic ASD mouse models. Interestingly, the study discovered that metformin, an FDA-approved drug, can reverse some MeHg-induced impairment in the subject mice. The authors suggest that the drug has the potential to be a future therapeutic strategy for autism.

In a desperate attempt to prop up faith in our rapidly failing banking system, the Federal Reserve unveiled an emergency plan late on Sunday that is absolutely staggering.  All of the depositors at Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank will be protected, and all of them will have access to their money right away.  They arent calling this a bailout, but that is essentially what it is.  But will it be enough to stop the bank runs that are already happening?

Late last week, huge lines at Silicon Valley Bank quickly made headlines all over the nation.

The panic at Silicon Valley Bank quickly spread to other banks in California.  In particular, First Republic Bank was hit really hard

Dozens of customers lined up outside of a First Republic Bank in southern California on Saturday eager to withdraw their funds in the wake of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

There had been fears following SVBs demise for First Republics future when analysts pointed out the similarities between the estimated value of their assets versus the actual value.

As news of what was unfolding in California spread like wildfire on social media, soon there were lines at various banks...

Close Encounters with the Tall White Aliens of Orion "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From openhandweb.org: Day by day tremendous shifts and unwindings are happening in the field that will beneficially affect sentient life on the planet as we climax into the Shift. What needs to be hoisted on board, is the diverse and complex interdimensional intervention that's been going on here that has locked life in a control system. It's from the field itself that this is happening and the Tall Whites of Orion are a leading layer of the intervention. I can report they are now being confronted and helped to realign.

Intervention: Why Can't You See it?

The challenge for human life on the planet is to come to the realisation that there are purposeful, alien influences projecting into the psyche and emotions to marshall people in a particular direction, a particular agenda. The ETs are not "out there". Too many are looking in the wrong direction. They are very much "in here" - meaning they've gotten into the human field through purposeful DNA manipulation that goes right back to the inception of hybridised Homo Sapiens during the epoch we can call, Atlantis. If it's so prevalent and systematic, why can't you see it?
The intervention is complex and multifaceted. It's highly sophisticated and "clever". It recognises the many desires and directives of human consciousness, including that of the soul, and it's learned how to channel them in particular ways - to condition them. You think you're free. You think you're making your own sovereign choices, but so few truly are. It's not until you go deep within, confront and pull apart the impulses that make you take a certain direction and pathway, that you get a sense of these alien influences.
How do you know if it's happening to you, and what's the antedote? Although the situation is complex, actually the solution is straightforward. It's not necessarily easy, but it is straightforwar...

How to Deal With Toxic Change In CoinJoins "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Wasabi Wallets WabiSabi protocol is designed to eliminate change outputs from CoinJoins, better protecting Bitcoin users privacy.

This is an opinion editorial by Thibaud Marchal, a contributor to privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet project Wasabi Wallet.

Much ink has been spilled on the privacy horrors of change outputs for Bitcoin. It is now widely understood that Bitcoin is a pseudonymous network, where all users are identified by the addresses they use. When making a bitcoin transaction, instead of only sending the exact amount that is needed like in traditional, account-based payment systems you send all the sats from the original address into new ones. This creates a change output, which is the amount you get back when making a payment.

Such a change output is quite bad for privacy, as most users underestimate, or sometimes completely ignore, how easy it makes it for someone to track all related payments.

Let's examine why the change output is often referred to as "toxic" and bad for privacy.

Privacy Concerns For Change Outputs

Source

In the above picture, we can see that everything from the address on the left got moved into two addresses on the right, while a third, small part was spent as a Bitcoin network transaction fee.

Outsiders don't necessarily know at this point which output was the payment and which one went back to the sender as change. Only the sender and the receiver know without a doubt which one is which. However, the receiver can now track the change output, and see where the payment comes from. As pointed out by many Bitcoin privacy researchers, a change output is a privacy nightmare that can undo many years of diligent UTXO management.

CoinJoins To The Rescue?

There is a type of collaborative bitcoin transaction that enables you to group up your UTXOs with other peoples coins to gain privacy, without ever losing custody of them, called a CoinJoin. Sometimes, hundreds of participants join their coins together, making it hard to track the flows of funds, including change outputs in some cases.

CoinJoin includes multiple inputs and outputs from many different users, making it hard...

Biden Administration Prevents Worlds Top Tennis Player from Entering Country Because He Refuses to Take COVID Vaccine "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I thought Biden announced the end of Covid? From thegatewaypuncit.com: The Biden administration has refused tennis great Novak Djokovic, the worlds number one tennis player, entry into the United States because he refuses to take the COVID-19 vaccine.  Most people thought that the insane mandates related to the COVID vaccine were over, but this apparently isnt the case. FOX News reports:

Novak Djokovic will not participate in the BNP Paribas Open this month after the Biden administration denied his entry to the United States, due to him being unvaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic, 35, requested a vaccine waiver, which would have allowed him to enter the U.S. unvaccinated, but it was rejected by the Homeland Security Department.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion subsequently withdrew from the combined ATP-WTA event, which begins Wednesday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.
The event includes matches in both California and Miami, Florida. It runs through March 19.
The communist-like tactics pushed by the Biden regime, forcing people to do or take things that they do not want, are still in effect. Despite mounting evidence that the vaccines may make individuals more...

Remove Pesticides from Your Fruits with This Simple Trick "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Did you know that you can use baking soda to remove pesticides from certain foods? Apples, for example, are one of these foods. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that baking soda is effective for this purpose.

Taking care of our health means paying attention to the foods we eat, including fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Excessive consumption of pesticides can increase the risk of various diseases, such as liver cancer, leukemia, tumors, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, brain cancer, Alzheimers, and Parkinsons disease. Thats why its recommended to eat organic foods whenever possible.

However, organic foods like apples may not be available or may be too expensive for some people. But dont worry, theres a solution! You can use baking soda to remove pesticides from apples (and other fruits that are eaten without peeling) and still get all the benefits of this delicious fruit without the harmful chemicals.

In a study by the University of Massachusetts, researchers tested three methods for removing pesticides from apples exposed to two common pesticides: Thiabendazole and the insecticide Phosmet. The most effective method was soaking the apple in a solution of water and baking soda for 15 minutes. After this process, rinse the apple with drinking water to remove the excess baking soda, and its ready to eat.

Now you know an easy and affordable way to remove pesticides from your fruit at home!

How 99% of Ancient Literature Was Lost "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Ancient Greece and Rome had plenty of literature, but practically none of it survives today. What exactly became of almost everything written down in Western antiquity is the subject of the video above by ancient-history Youtube channel Told in Stone, previously featured here on Open Culture for its investigations into everything from the Colosseum and the Pantheon to Roman nightlife and the explosion of Mount Vesuvius. But none of its past videos has quite as much relevance to this particular story as the one on the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

Described by narrator Garret Ryan as the greatest of all ancient libraries, the Library of Alexandria could have contained between 532,800 and 700,000 volumes in scroll form, all of them lost by the time Julius Caesar burned it down in 48 B.C..

14 Bilinguals Reveal Something Only They Know "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Its pretty common around the world to speak two, three, four (or more) languages fairly fluently. Its less so in the United States, so there are probably more than a few mysteries about what its like living with more than one vocabulary in your head.

If youre curious what its like, these 14 people who speak more than one language are revealing a little bit of what they experience every day.

14. The precise expression.

When you want to say something you have the precise expression for in another language than the one youre just speaking in.

13. The pinnacle.

When some word only comes to mind in another language, and you just cant remember what that word is in your native tongue.

I heard about Dutch ppl not being able to remember a word in Dutch but being able to think of it in German and then getting super frustrated, only to realize that its the same word in Dutch, which I think is the pinnacle of this phenomenon. I am bilingual but in two very unrelated languages, so I dont have this issue.

12. Quite fun.

How much fun it is.

So I speak Dutch as a native language. My English is really good, my German is normal and I also speak a bit of Swiss German ( believe me thats a big difference). So a friend of mine is from Switzerland. She also speaks all those languages. ( and even more)

When we are talking I ask something in Dutch she answers in English and I reply in German. When we have a couple of beers the language can change mid sentence.

We already had a couple of times people asking which language we were speaking. So yeah thats quite fun

Nick Wise

Last August 12th, Nick Wise came across a Facebook post advertising the first, third, and fifth author positions for sale on a scientific paper with the same title as a recently published article.

Wise, a scientific sleuth whose work has resulted in more than 850 retractions, posted a comment on PubPeer with a screenshot of the advertisement and contacted the publisher of the journal.

Six months later, the article, Potential application of AlP nanosheet semiconductor in the detection of toxic phosgene, thiophosgene, and formaldehyde gases, has been retracted. It had appeared in Semiconductor Science and Technology, an IOP Publishing title, and has been cited once.

Meanwhile, the authorship broker says he has left the business.

The retraction notice cited Wises PubPeer post, and detailed the publishers conclusion:

that there is sufficient evidence to hand that supports several author positions were purchased. During this investigation, the journal became aware of additional concerns relating to this article, which includes portions of previously published works [1, 2] by different authors being drawn upon without sufficient attribution, and further indications that demonstrate the article was created, manipulated, and/or sold by a commercial entity.

Despite numerous attempts to receive further information, the journal has not received any conclusive evidence from the authors that refutes the concerns raised, including any materials that demonstrate the research was conceptualised and drafted by the author group. An Architect Breaks Down the Design of New York City Subway Stations, from the Oldest to Newest "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

With 26 lines and 472 stations, the New York City subway system is practically a living organism, and way too big a topic to tackle in a short video.

Architect Michael Wyetzner may not have time to touch on rats, crime track fires, flooding, night and weekend service disruptions, or the adults-in-a-Peanuts-special sound quality of the announcements in the above episode of Architectural Digests Blueprints web series, but he gives an excellent overview of its evolving design, from the stations themselves to sidewalk entrances to the platform signage.

First stop, the old City Hall station, whose chandeliers, skylights, and Guastavino tile arching in an alternating colors herringbone pattern made it the star attraction of the just-opened system in 1904.

A Second Bank CLOSED by FDIC: Whos Next and What Should We Do? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Author of Be Ready for Anything and Bloom Where Youre Planted online course

After Silicon Valley Bank had its deposits seized by the FDIC, on a Friday, as predicted, theres a sense of unease across the country. Depositors have been unable to access their funds, and were all wondering, Am I next? Many of us are quickly making a transition to physical investments we can hold in our hands because the future of banking is incredibly concerning.

On Sunday night, a second bank was closed by regulators and its deposits have also been put in control of the FDIC. Signature Bank out of New York was shut down to protect consumers and the financial system according to a joint statement released by the U.S. Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

According to that statement:

Depositors of the Silicon Valley Bank will have access to all of their money following the banks failure on Friday at no loss to American taxpayers

Today we are taking decisive actions to protect the U.S. economy by strengthening public confidence in our banking system, the joint statement read. This step will ensure that the U.S. banking system continues to perform its vital roles of protecting deposits and providing access to credit to households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth.

The statement said Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen had approved actions enabling the FDIC to complete its resolution of SVB in a manner that fully protects depositors.

Depositors will have access to all of their money starting Monday, March 13. The taxpayer will bear no losses associated with the resolution of SVB.

Notably, the regulators statement also announced the shutdown of New York-based Signature Bank.

We are also announcing a similar systemic risk exception for Signature Bank, New York, New York, which was closed today by its state chartering authority, the joint statement read.

Punk Celebrates 20 Years of Complaining About AFI Selling Out "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

MILWAUKEE Local punk Max Prime is celebrating his 20th year of incessant complaining about his former favorite band AFI signing to a major label and becoming unforgivable sellouts, sources who cannot believe hes still doing this shit confirm.

Man, its hard to believe Sing The Sorrow is already 20 years old. I still remember hearing it for the first time and immediately knowing AFI was finished, said Prime, shaking his head grimly. I knew I had to make it my mission to tell everyone how I knew about them before they were huge, and how Ill never listen to any of their new stuff. Normally I can only find things to complain about regarding an artist for like five, maybe ten years, so this is a really big deal for me. My buddies have mostly stopped bringing up AFI around me, but Im sure they have something planned for this milestone.

Primes housemate Brad White does not have any plans to help him celebrate and wish hed shut the fuck up about it already.

No, we definitely dont have anything planned. In fact I booked an AirBnB just so I could get away for a few days while Max rants to no one, said White. I like Sing the Sorrow, and I like everything AFI has put out since. Well, except for Crash Love. I dont really care for Bodies either actually, but thats not the point. Bands evolve, its normal, and they still make an effort to play some deep cuts at every gig. If Max wants to just mope around listening to Very Proud Of Ya for the rest of his life, thats his problem.

Members of AFI report a deep desire for fans to move on.

Yeah, I know who Max is. He DMs me all the time complaining about our sound and how I used to be his idol and I betrayed him, said frontman Davey Havock while braiding his mullet. Ive had him muted for years, but every now and then I check in and see if hes moved on, and no, he has not. Were all used to this now though. Just once I want to play a show without some crusty punk yelling at us to play some old stuff. And then when we do play the old stuff, they still just stand there with their arms crossed. Fucking annoying.

At press time, Prime offered unprompted to give an extended interview breaking down every reason why Sing The Sorrow sucks.

I Gave John Lennon the Finger Guns the Day He Died and Ive Felt Guilty Ever Since "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I have a confession. Its been eating away at me for decades. On December 8th, 1980 when I waited outside of the Dakota Apartments hoping for a glimpse of my idol. Though I wasnt able to meet him, I was able to briefly make eye contact and fire off a couple of cool finger guns at him. Later that night, Id learn that my idol, John Lennon, had died of gunshot wounds.

They say to never meet your heroes. I never knew this is what they were warning me about.

Ive thought about that day often. The day my harmless gesture ended in tragedy. I keep thinking of what I could have done differently. Maybe I should have tipped an imaginary hat. No! Regret fixes nothing. I must simply confess to what Ive done and move on one day at a time.

I never told anyone about that day until now. One minute I was having a personal interaction with Mr. Ono himself, and the next I was watching football and having to learn about his demise. For a split second I thought I had magical finger-bullet-shooting powers and that was bittersweet, but when I realized it was a coincidence, I only felt bitter.

It feels so good to finally get all of this out. Obviously, I didnt cause the death of my hero. But confessing to my symbolic part in his murder is cathartic nonetheless. Someday Ill work up the courage to talk about the time I gave the throat-cutting gesture to a waiter on June 12th, 1994 at the Mezzaluna restaurant in Brentwood, California after he refused to give me a free refill.

Record Collector Fooled by Big Crate of Laserdiscs Again "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

VALPARAISO, Ind. Voracious record collector Anson Tugliss once again mistook a large box of Laserdiscs at an outdoor market for LPs before it was too late, sources at the flea market confirmed.

Damn it to hell, this always happens. I get too excited about seeing soundtracks for movies I never knew had vinyl releases. I was flipping through, all pumped and stuffCabin Boy, Mars Attacks! George of the Jungle, stuff like that, yknow? said Tugliss, while angrily cracking a rare disc of Spice World over his knee. And then I pay the guy a huge wad of cash right before I realize, yet again, theyre of course Laserdiscs. Then all the guy can do is tap the All Sales Final sign, before he taps the We Dont Sell Laserdisc Players sign. That guys got a sign for everything

Vendors at the Valparaiso Flea report initial confusion over the enthusiasm shown for the clearly worthless form of media.

Hes got no case, he shouldnt have been so inattentive. I wasnt about to correct him, though. Its tough to get rid of those things, especially these days. Everything he boughts streaming free on Tubi as we speak, said flea market vendor Harv Laemmle. Next time Ill try to trick him into taking some Betamax tapes too, and say that theyre regular cassettes and hes just standing really close and his perspectives off. I guarantee ya I could make that sale, the boys just that dim.

Laserdisc CEO Ralph Rowlhutt stated hes just glad to have the short-lived video format back in the public eye.

Honestly, god bless that vendor for single-handedly keeping the Laserdisc economy flowing. Any day that Anson kid mistakenly buys a milk crate of my unwanted stock is another day that stock doesnt end up in a secret landfill like all those E.T. Atari games, said Rowlhutt, from his tiny office. I thank my lucky stars every day I decided to make Laserdiscs circular, and easily mistaken for records. I shudder at the thought of that coin landing the other way, and we had made them square. Scary to think about, sometimes that thought invades my nightmares and I dont sleep for days.

When contacted for a final statement, Tugliss stated hes been playing the Laserdiscs on his turntable anyway, and even started to enjoy the resulting horrible screeching noises.

5 Times Taking Life Advice From a Beach Boys Song Led to Me Waking up in a Drained Swimming Pool "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Fun, fun, fun, til daddy takes the T-Bird away! Also, Beach Boys songs are fun until you stop listening to them as background music at Johnny Rockets and view them as a viable source of life guidance.

While it is often said that the music of the 1960s is the poetry of a generation, it turns out that listening to the Beach Boys just leads to waking up fully clothed at the bottom of a drained swimming pool more often than youd care to remember.

You know she digs you and thinks youre a real groovy guy/ But yet Im not sure that I feel the same Dont Hurt My Little Sister: Word to the wise, walking up to a guy who went out with your sister a couple of times in high school and drunkenly ordering him to prove hes a real groovy guy has consequences, the biggest of which is he and his friends chasing you out of the bar, across a highway, and into the abandoned Wet City Water Park, where you trip into the dried out wave pool and wake up hours later.

If you brought a big brown bag of them home/ Id jump up and down and hope youd toss me a carrot Vegetables: If you get excited when your community-supported agriculture box arrives and demand the farmer throws you a carrot but he actually has a hell of an arm and you have to go long and end up back at Wet City and then wake up with a seagull poking you, its time to stop taking Brian Wilson at face value.

Gotta keep those lovin good vibrations a-happenin with her Good Vibrations: Good vibes at a party are all well and good, but deciding to maintain them by spontaneously jumping into a pool at a backyard party only works if youve checked if it has currently been emptied for retiling.

Never had a lesson I ever learned Never Learn Not To Love: Technically, this is a Dennis Wilson solo track, but turns out that doing anything like the hardest-partying member of the Beach Boys is a lesson that ends up with you fucking trashed at the bottom of a kiddie pool and 911 being called.

The Southern girls with the way they talk/ They knock me out when Im down there California Girls: I dont really want to get into this too much, but this girl from Alabama takes some things as a personal challenge and then you wake up missing teeth, somehow at Wet City once again.

Despite leaving me near dead at the bottom of a pool, ussually for hours at a time, at least none of these songs are Kokomo. Fuck Kokomo.

Theyve Been Accused of Cheating to Get a Promotion. Did They Do Anything Wrong? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

There tend to be hurt feelings when one person gets a promotion over someone elseits just the way it goes.

But to be accused of cheating by a co-worker is a different story entirely.

So did this person act like an a**hole for how they ended up getting promoted?

Lets see whats going on here

AITA for cheating to get a promotion?

I put the cheating in quotes because I dont think its cheating but my colleagues disagree. Im in my 30s and everyone involved are between 30-50.

About 6 months ago, our unit VP announced his retirement by the end of the year so the company went into search mode. We recently found out our manager will be promoted into the VP position so now his position needs to be filled. Which brings us to my current situation.

Im single with no kids so I have no other responsibilities except to myself. I really want this position because its a visible position and a great stepping stone to my career (as seen by my managers promotion) and itll almost double my pay. Once we found out about our managers promotion, I started to take on extra projects and taking work home.

I leave work at my normal hours then work from home until 9 or 10 pm, even on the weekends. All of those extra hours have allowed me to take on harder projects that other people turned down and complete more than anyone else. My manager and the VP have noticed and complimented me on my hustle.

My colleagues also noticed my increased production. Last week a work friend asked me how Im able to do all of those projects in 8 hrs and I told her about my nights and weekends.

Word got around and this week during our weekly conference call, my colleagues told me to cut it out. They accused me of cheating because Im putting in the amount of hours they...

14 People Who Dont Share A Room With Their Partner Talk About Why "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Theres no right way to make a relationship work. Whatever keeps people happy and together works, right and for some couples, that means having your own space to sleep.

If youre curious about why people make this choice (and why its great), here are 14 couples living the separate bedroom life.

14. An awesome way to live.

I dont understand why this would be weird, honestly.

The whole king and queen chambers things sounds like an awesome way to live.

Also so does living in a castle, but I realize thats not actually a good idea in most cases.

13. Its about teamwork.

A marriage doesnt mean you own the other and have to stick 24 hours. Its team work. For both people. And the respect they have for each other.

12. If you can afford it

I heard we only used to sleep together bc beds were so expensive. My partner and I work opposite hours and I would wake up very early to workout. It made more sense and was courteous to sleep in separate rooms.

It was hard @first bc our culture paints a clear picture of how we should be living. Im so glad I see through that BS now. Do what is best for you in your relationship. Thats what matters. Be kind and give others grace.

11. There are real benefits.

I had abdominal surgery in the spring, one night i woke up to an elbow right in the gut where my fresh incision was when my husband rolled. After that he slept in the spare room til I was healed.

It was amazing to have the bed to myself for almost 2 months, I woke up starfishing every morning lol. So to those couples who live like that all the ti...

Diode | A Narrative About a Mental Journey by Karen Hudes "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From Thomas Pynchon: Diode explores a pivotal mental state I experienced nearly 30 years ago, the psychiatric response in its aftermath, and my search for the true nature of what took place.

Catalysts for the narrative include novels such as The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon and The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles, as well as 90s music videos, halogen lamps and witchcraft shops. While it takes place amid an atmosphere of shifting relationships with family and friends, Diode goes beyond telling a personal story to conceive of a different model for understanding mental journeys, one based on the energy surrounding and coursing through us, rather than on individual biology.

~ writer and editor Karen Hudes

* * *

Despite being grateful at the time that I went crazy in the 1990s rather than an earlier era, Ill never know what would have happened if I were given time to eat and drink, patience to sleep and recover, come back to myself.

And interest in why I would overthrow a burden, and how I did it. They fixated on the overthrowing as the problem.

Heres what I think:

I had a ton of things bottled up since I was a baby, and an explosion was inevitable. Its not necessarily an unusual condition for something that needs to explode, to explode. All it takes is sensitivity, pain and repression. A body under pressure did what it needed to do.

The wall was real. It was also a metaphor. And it was proof.

In Spain I expanded. When I came home I contracted, then broke through.

There is a particular anger. The anger of awakening to deserving more.

* * *

The explanation from the doctors, a chemical imbalance, gave everyone a pass. No one talked to us about having family therapy. When the energy first coursed through me, I saw the truth that our family needed to talk, but once I became the sick person, the idea died.

Thats something no one said either, that this state may have exposed something true. That you took an extraordinary trip with the power of your mind.

I see what happened as a rush into my intellect, turning into a waking dream, a migrating dream, and I was left alone to discard it while having my system altered, instead of receiving help, choosing the help I wanted, to make an honest repair. To integrate it back to myself, to possess it.

What emerged needed to emerge. The stabilizers held it in place.

I wonder if an expansion followed by a contraction precedes any radical break. If the aftermath hadnt cordoned off everything I experienced on the rooftopwhich my body granted me as relief, whose loss I would mourn, without receiving room to mourn, or recognition there was anything to mourn or craveI would like to have understood what happe...

Lets start with the Seven of Cups. When this card shows up we know we are under her spell. We listen to the part of ourselves that just wants a quick fix. She softly whispers in our ear: just take the easy road. We feel drawn into a cycle of instant gratification and we lose our way.

We are faced with temptation in many areas of our life. We might feel cloudy and disconnected from our moral compass. We could not be thinking clearly due to a possible addiction or problematic pattern. And the Seven of Cups is pointing to some less-than-healthy behaviors that might be taking up space in our lives.

Whether its a relationship based purely on pleasure and not connected to our hearts, a job that pays the bills but does not fulfill us, or even the glasses of wine and endless scrolling that soothe our brain after a long day but dont fuel our spirit.

These pleasures can easily deceive us into thinking that its something we need. We start to crave this way of operating instead of healthier more sustainable choices. The Seven of Cups shows up to make sure we see through the illusion of instant gratification.

It is hard to make healthy choices because they usually require more planning and effort. And if we have been dealing with emotional or physical pain, the effort is just that much harder. But we are called to remember that these things are not making us happy. It may be delaying unhappiness for the time being, but it is not making us more joyful in the long run.

When we take a step back and look at our patterns, which the end of Pisces Season might call us to do, we will be able to adjust and recalibrate, rather than just operating on autopilot. This recalibration will be so worth the effort.

There is nothing wrong with pleasure in it itself. The cards just want us to see if we are experiencing quick, short-term pleasure or deeper more restorative pleasure. It wants us to cultivate pleasures that enrich us and make us feel more alive and strong, to find things that truly fill our cups.

Our next card is the Fool, a card connected to the youthful energy in all of us. The Fool highlights a childs fantastical imagination, the creative mind, and our adventurous spirit.

It is the first card in the Major Arcana and it brings the energy of a new soul that is not familiar with the trials and tribulations of life. It is all about taking risks and lightening our emotional baggage. If the Fool had a mantra it would be: Lea...

U.S. Treasury, FDIC And Federal Reserve Will Guarantee All Deposits At SVB, Signature Bank In Unprecedented Move "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A joint statement ensured that all customer deposits at the respective banks will be honored by the federal government.

The U.S. Treasury, Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) announced on Sunday that they would take "decisive actions" to strengthen public confidence in the U.S. banking system. This decision came after the FDIC and Federal Reserve recommended Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank be placed under systemic risk exceptions. The move would allow the FDIC to resolve Silicon Valley Bank, based out of Santa Clara, California, in a manner that fully protects depositors money and ensures their access to credit. The same would apply to Signature Bank, based out of New York, New York, which was closed today by its state chartering authority.

In the joint statement, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen, Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome H. Powell, and FDIC Chairman Martin J. Gruenberg said, "This step will ensure that the U.S. banking system continues to perform its vital roles of protecting deposits and providing access to credit to households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth."

The senior management of both banks has been removed, and shareholders and certain unsecured debtholders will not be protected. However, depositors will have access to all of their money starting on March 13, and no losses will be borne by taxpayers. Any losses incurred to support uninsured depositors will be recovered by a special assessment on banks, as required by law.

The Federal Reserve Board also announced on Sunday that it would make additional funding available to eligible depository institutions to ensure banks have the ability to meet the needs of all their depositors. "The U.S. banking system remains resilient and on a solid foundation," the statement said. "Those reforms combined with today's actions demonstrate our commitment to take the necessary steps to ensure that depositors' savings remain safe."

The "decisive actions" to protect depositors' savings is a welcome move; but also a showcase example of why Bitcoin was created. The Chancellor on the Brink message included within the genesis block was an express comment by Satoshi Nakamoto on their inspiration for the technology. We now see a new iteration of this inevitable consequence of fiat currency systems: and so a new point of evidence for why Bitcoin exists.

3rd FDIC-Insured Bank Fails in 5 Days but Feds Avoid Black Monday by Bailing Out Depositors "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

by Brian Shilhavy
Editor, Health Impact News

Sunday morning U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen appeared on Sunday talk shows to announce that the Fed was NOT bailing out Silicon Valley Bank or any other banks, as they did in 2008.

However, faced with the possibility of bank runs and a Black Monday collapse of the stock market, the Feds apparently reversed course (or maybe this was their intention all along?) and did just exactly what they said they would not do, and put into place a program to bail out depositors who were not covered by the FDICs limit of $250k per account.

The FDIC also closed another bank, Signature Bank in New York, but assured depositors that they could get all of their money out of their accounts on Monday.

And it worked, as futures trading that began Sunday night jumped up, instead of crashing, and Wall Street breathed a deep sigh of relief.

We now have had 3 FDIC-insured banks fail in 5 days, but it doesnt matter if your account was insured or not, as the Fed is just going to give everyone their money back.

So the financial Armageddon has been postponed, again. The Big Tech billionaires, like Mark Cuban, whined and complained over the weekend that the Fed was not stepping in to save them, so the Fed obliged.

The banking system has been saved, for now, so the $billions can continue to pour into Wall Street to fund the military industrial complex to continue their wars, as well as $billions flowing into Big Pharma to keep funding never-ending emergency use authorizations for new drugs and vaccines.

This wont fix the systemic problem with our financial system, but at least depositors should be able to get access to their money Monday, even though that money will be worth far less than what it was worth on Friday.

Get ready for the mass consolidation of the banking industry now and the rollouts of Digital IDs and eventually Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

Health Officials Caught Deploying Fear and Staging Coverup "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In January 2022, House Oversight Committee Republicans released a batch of emails sent to and from the National Institutes of Health (NIH),1,2,3 showing that scientists in the earliest days of the pandemic strongly suspected SARS-CoV-2 was a genetically engineered virus.

The correspondence also revealed that NIH leaders Dr. Anthony Fauci and then-NIH chief Dr. Francis Collins were nervous about the possibility that they'd funded the creation of this virus and were determined to suppress questions about its origin.

Fauci, Collins and at least 11 scientists convened for a conference call February 1, 2020, during which they discussed the evidence for genetic manipulation. Yet, no more than three days later, by February 4, four of the participants had already drafted a paper titled "The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2," in which they dismissed the possibility of a lab origin for the virus.

One of the authors of this paper, Kristian Andersen, Ph.D., a professor at Scripps Research, has so far insisted that Fauci did not attempt to influence the working group's conclusions.

In a letter to Sens. James Comer and Jim Jordan, Scripps Research answering questions on Andersen's behalf claimed that Andersen "objectively weighted all the evidence available to him." In a March 5, 2023, memorandum,4,5 the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic laid out evidence showing that this assertion is "demonstrably false."

Fauci and Collins Prompted Creation of 'Proximal Origin'

According to the Select Subcommittee, the evidence available clearly shows that Fauci did indeed prompt Andersen to write "Proximal Origin," and for a specific reason, namely to "disprove" the lab leak theory. "The authors of this paper skewed available evidence to achieve that goal," the Subcommittee writes.

As noted in the memorandum,6 in a February 8, 2020, email, Andersen stated: "Our main work over the last couple of weeks has been focused on trying to disprove any type of lab theory " Furthermore, in a February 12 email to the journal Nature, Andersen openly and clearly admitted Fauci's and Collins' influence:7

Genetically Engineered Food the Lie That Wont Die "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Editors Note: This article is a reprint. It was originally published March 3, 2020.

Promises, promises, promises. The toxic world of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and industrial agriculture is built on false promises. For nearly 30 years we have been listening to the propaganda of the big biotech companies like Monsanto/Bayer, Syngenta, DuPont/Pioneer, BASF and others about how genetic engineering will transform farming and food production.

Weve heard how it will reduce the environmental impact of farming by lowering pesticide use. Weve been promised that it will increase the nutritional content of food. Weve been told how it will boost farmers profits by increasing yields, and that those increased yields will help feed the world.

As the problem of man-made climate change has moved to the top of the global agenda, new promises have emerged about how GMOs will fight climate change and how genetic engineering will make plants more resilient to drought and flooding. The huckster promises keep on coming, but what has the biotech industry actually delivered over nearly three decades?

Increasing Pesticide Use

First and foremost, GMO crops were sold as a way of reducing on-farm pesticide use. But since GM crops were introduced, there has been a dramatic increase in pesticide use on those crops worldwide.

Most GM crops fall into one of two types. Pesticide resisters, or Roundup Ready crops, mostly corn and soya, are genetically engineered to withstand the spraying of Monsantos Roundup herbicide, the active ingredient of which is glyphosate. Most recently, pesticide resisters have also been engineered to resist other highly toxic pesticides like dicamba and 2,4-D.

GM crops have turned glyphosate into one of the most widely and recklessly used herbicides in history. According to the USDA,1 more than 90% of the soybeans harvested on U.S. farms are genetically engineered to withstand herbicides like Roundup.

Pesticide producers, or Bt plants, which include corn and soya but also cotton, produce their own insecticides. When an agricultural pest eats the crop, in theory, it will be poisoned and die.

But weeds and insects rapidly evolve2 to be immune to these poisons. Most agricultural weeds have become resistant to Roundup, causing farmers to spray more each year. The heavier use of herbicides creates ever more superweeds and even higher herbicide use.

The increase was first seen in pesticide resisters. A 2012 study3 out of Washington State University found that planting GM crops quickly resulted in herbicide-resistant superweeds and, as a result, increased herbicide use...

Chinese Medical Herb Fights Tumors "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Skullcap (Scutellaria barbata) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plant known in China as banzhilian. The Scutellaria genus belongs to the mint family, and while there are 50 Scutellaria species used in TCM, Scutellaria barbata is particularly notable for its anticancer properties.1

Now, researchers with the Centre of Excellence for Plant and Microbial Science (CEPAMS), which is a collaboration betweentheChineseAcademyofSciences(CAS)andtheJohnInnesCentre(JIC), used DNA sequencing to uncover how skullcap produces one of its primary anticancer compounds, a clerodane diterpenoid known as scutebarbatine A.2

Genetic Basis for Skullcaps Anticancer Prowess Uncovered

The team uncovered skullcaps genomic sequence, revealing clues about how it produces anticancer compounds. Study author Cathie Martin with JIC explained, "We have found that the primary metabolite has activity against cancer cells but not non-cancer cells, which is especially important for an anticancer metabolite. Now we are looking to develop synthetic methods for producing more of the lead compound."3

While the team is hoping to create synthetic versions of the compound using a host such as yeast, skullcap has a long history of medicinal use. Scutellaria barbata, known as barbed skullcap, is used in TCM cancer treatments, particularly for advanced metastatic cancers.

The efficacy of S. barbata extracts at reducing cancer progression as well as the absence of harmful side effects has resulted in renewed interest in using this TCM prescription as a therapy complementary to modern chemotherapies, the study notes.4

Barbed Skullcap Shows Anticancer Promise

Barbed skullcap, a perennial herb, is widely used in China and Korea, traditionally for its anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties. It contains alkaloids, flavones, polysaccharides, organic acids and neoclerodane diterpenoids,5 each with unique active effects.

Scutebarbatine A from skullcap has been found to induce apoptosis, or cell death, in human colon cancer cells. Scutebarbatine A promotes apoptosis specifically in cancer cells by reducing the abundance of the inhibitors of apoptosis proteins, according to the CEPAMS team.6

The leaves, stems and flowers of Scutellaria barbata are particularly rich in clerodanes like scutebarbatine A, and more than half of clerodanes known in nature have come from species of the mint family....

Five Sustainable Brick Alternatives "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Standard brick kilns use a diverse range of energy sources to fire bricks, all of which release noxious pollutants and particulate matter into the environment. Also the raw material for bricks comes from top soil and clay, depleting precious land resources, which could otherwise be used to grow food.

Brick manufacturing innovators are exploring the use of low carbon materials sourced from industrial, municipal and agricultural waste, and hemp among other material.

The raw material for hempcrete bricks comes from the hemp plant, which can grow in most soils and climates, reducing the journey from farm to factory, and thereby, the emissions. By absorbing copious amounts of carbon over its lifetime, the hemp plant is an effective carbon sink.

Hemp blocks from IsoHemp are non-load-bearing glued masonry products recommended for creating building envelopes and partition walls. These blocks can efficiently regulate temperature and humidity, and deliver acoustic insulation and fire resistance. The low-energy manufacturing process uses locally sourced 100% natural hemp and limestone.

The Gent waste brick is a lime-cured brick made from recycled municipal waste, specifically developed for use on the facade of the new Design Museum Gent extension in the city of Ghent in Belgium. These bricks contain 63% waste, and are cured rather than fired. The lime captures CO2 from the atmosphere during the curing, sequestering carbon over the life of the building. The brick also delivers the required strength and resilience to stand up to external conditions.

CHD Exclusive: Mother Sues D.C. Doctor Who Gave Kids COVID Vaccines Without Consent "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Your_rightsParental consent has always been on our watch list. Recently, as transsexual ideation has swept through schools, the topic has reached a heated level. Even hotter than abortion. The push to allow minors to make healthcare decisions continues, disregarding parental input. But remember the inverse has been true as well. Parents who choose not to approve a medical procedure or product or tretment are quickly judged and can be punished. Perhaps the erosion of parental healthcare rights has been marching in this direction for decades.  As a teen, I thought I was grown up enough to make my own healthcare choices. That's just the teen brain. Smarter than everyone, until about age 25, right?
