Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) with David Holmgren "IndyWatch Feed Allaunews"

<p><h3>Why study permaculture?</h3> <p><strong>Join us for internationally-recognised permaculture training that will help you design sustainable, abundant homes, businesses, professions and communities.</strong></p> <p>Whilst population growth and consumption levels are pushing our Planet towards a catastrophic environmental tipping point, permaculture design offers a way that we, as individuals and communities, can take control of our future and live sustainably.</p> <p>It is a design system which draws upon the great truths of traditional knowledge, modern scientific understandings and the ethics of a peaceful and democratic society. Developed in Australia in the late 70s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, it is now taught in over 150 countries. Over a million people have graduated from Design Courses and are using this tool to build resilience and diversity into their lives, their local communities & in the workplace.

David Suzuki dubs permaculture 'Australia's greatest intellectual export'.

Permaculture can be employed by anyone, whatever profession or skill, on any scale: from individual, household, urban or rural, to balconies, backyards & neighbourhoods, to farms, factories, businesses, schools and cities anywhere on the planet and in any climate. It offers a sustainable landscape, dignified human-scale living and self-reliant children who have the confidence to design a sustainable future for themselves.

Permaculture is based on three ethics: Care of the Earth, Care of Community and Acceptance of personal responsibility for consumption and population. Many practical design principles, technologies and strategies have evolved to make permaculture one of the most accessible and dynamic solutions to the issues we face in the 21st Century.

Artist Paints Architectural Portraits Onto Concrete Fragments of Same Demolished Estate "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Artist Paints Architectural Portraits Onto Concrete Fragments of Same Demolished Estate

Paintings on Concrete by Harriet Mena Hill

Sometimes the choice of materials is just as meaningful as the art itself. Artist Harriet Mena Hill has been working on an ongoing series of unorthodox paintings called The Aylesbury Fragments, rendering scenes of architecture directly onto pieces of concrete. Each of these remnants is salvaged material from the Aylesbury Estate, a large housing complex in South East London, which is being demolished as part of a regeneration program.

Hill finds a way to record snippets of the dismantled buildings on numerous shards of concrete, which range from palm-sized to nearly the length of a human torso. The inspiration for what she paints derives from the stories of residents who used to live in these torn-down apartments. I started making work about the Aylesbury Estate in response to my experience of working with the residents on art projects back in 2018, Hill tells My Modern Met. The Aylesbury Fragments document what remains of the occupied parts of the estate as it undergoes regeneration. The concrete pieces that Hill uses come from a block of flats called Chiltern which was demolished in 2020.

The Aylesbury Estate was designed by architect Hans Peter Fenton and constructed between 1963 and 1977. It consisted of 2,700 dwellings that housed about 10,000 residents at one time. During the 1980s, however, the site went through a period of disrepair, eventually prompting the beginning of a regeneration program in 2005. I wanted to present the human and community side of the estate which has historically experienced an extremely negative portrayal in the press, Hill explains. The works offer an opportunity to do so.

Scroll down to see more works from this series, and follow Hill on Instagram to keep up to date with her latest projects.

The United States V. China: The Mystery behind the Expanding War "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A War doesnt have to be publicly declared or mutually agreed upon by both of the participants. The United States should be keenly aware of this, considering our corporeal and civic annihilation of Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya to name a few. Would any of these countries agree to be bitch-slapped back into a feudal age if they couldve avoided it?

The authoritarian regime in China has engaged in a subversive war on the American citizenry, whether the Biden administration will admit to this or not. Is Biden reluctant to address Chinas complicity in the fatal poisoning of U.S. civilians because hes colluded with the corrupt nation so often?

Chinas unrelenting assault on young Americans with copious amounts of fentanyl has eradicated tens of thousands in recent years. Biden refuses to return volley for this attack and has aided in its efficiency by recklessly opening our borders. In comparison, the Bush regime slaughtered millions in recompense for the murder of just three-thousand on 9/11, most of which were unwitting, Middle Eastern dirt-farmers.

Apart from poisoning thousands of remiss young adults and irrevocably destabilizing their families, the Chinese have been purchasing land around key American military installations.

As disturbing as a communist land grab surrounding American military bases might appear, it pales in comparison to other occurrences. Recently, Chinese surveillance operations have been acknowledged to exist in several of our citys.

These surveillance hubs are littered throughout the densely populated areas of communist China and they infect every nook and cranny of its society. It seems unfathomable, however, to imagine these subversive intelligence agencies operating in the United States. If American citizens are privy to this alarming development, then its safe to say that our officials mustve known for years.

The Chi-com infiltration of our cities and around our military bases is only astounding when taken out of context. The reality is that we are voluntarily tied at the hip with Chinas oppressive regime.

Just take a stroll to the nearest bargain superstore and youll discover 99% of its products are made in China. Is there any other time in history when the United States was so interdependent with such a formidable enemy?

As we learn more and more that money is fake, shouldn't we ask ourselves why we're willing to trade real, hard, honest work for fake money.

If the money is fake, shouldn't the work be fake?

Then, if the answer to that question is 'yes', then we must ask ourselves....

What does fake work look like?

To answer my own question, I guess it looks like a youtube video, or a tik tok video, or a government official asking the Federal Reserve for a billion dollars.

Then we should ask ourselves,...

10 myths told by COVID experts and now debunked "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

More to share with your friends, from the New York Post no less: In the past few weeks, a series of analyses published by highly respected researchers have exposed a truth about public health officials during COVID: Much of the time, they were wrong. To be clear, public health officials were not wrong for making recommendations based on what was known at the time. Thats understandable. You go with the data you have. No, they were wrong because they refused to change their directives in the face of new evidence. When a study did not support their policies, they dismissed it and censored opposing opinions. At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention weaponized research itself by putting out its own flawed studies in its own non-peer-reviewed medical journal, MMWR. In the final analysis, public health officials actively propagated misinformation that ruined lives and forever damaged public trust in the medical profession. Here are 10 ways they misled Americans:

Misinformation #1: Natural immunity offers little protection compared to vaccinated immunity

A Lancet study looked at 65 major studies in 19 countries on natural immunity. The researchers concluded that natural immunity was at least as effective as the primary COVID vaccine series.

Public health officials downplayed concerns about vaccine-induced myocarditis or inflammation of the heart muscle.

How Bitcoin Mining Is Adapting To The Energy Transition "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Researching more than 100 bitcoin mining companies, its clear that this industry is poised to advance energy consumption more than any other.

This is an opinion editorial by Ritabrata Santra, an engineer focused on energy tech.

I bought my first bitcoin in 2016. I was a college sophomore and it was my second year living in the U.S. As I was acclimating myself to the new way of life I found myself living, I came across an article on Bitcoin.

I had saved up some money from my on-campus jobs. As someone who saw the devaluation of my parents hard-earned money, the value proposition of Bitcoin was immediately clear to me and I made the second-biggest mistake of my life: I bought a bitcoin off of Coinbase (for $1,500) instead of mining and cold storing (HODLing) it! If you are wondering what my biggest mistake is: Two months later, I got an internship in Germany, so I sold the bitcoin to buy myself a ticket to Berlin, and six months later, one bitcoin was worth around $16,000!

The Energy Trilemma And Bitcoin

One of the many things that stood out in my new way of life in the U.S. is the reliable access to electricity. Growing up in India, I witnessed how a lack of energy impacted health, knowledge and opportunity.

Today, developed economies consume as much energy as 12 times the average in some of the developing economies. There are over 900 million people who do not have access to electricity but we flare enough gas every year to power entire sub-saharan Africa. In other words, we burn enough gas (emitting carbon dioxide, or CO2) to provide energy for millions of people without creating any economic value, as we do not have the necessary technology to profitably transport the energy where it is most needed.

I believe that the energy trilemma, the need to balance energy reliability, affordability and sustainability, is one of the great challenges of our lifetime we need to eradicate energy poverty and meet the additional demand of energy from emerging economies, while actively decarbonizing to reach carbon neutrality.

Bitcoin mining serves as a medium for capturing the wasted economic potential of excess energy resources, accelerates otherwise expensive but innovative renewable development, and therefore sits at the center of solving the energy trilemma.

From the archive: Were we being precious in 2009? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

This post contains an exchange between myself and Ravi Chandirimani, then the editor of CYPN. It dates from May 2009. He advised those involved in IDYW to embrace pragmatism. Being pragmatic has certainly done him no harm. He sits today on the Mark Allen Board of Directors. Fair enough. Does the success of his individual pragmatism expose the naive preciousness of the collective, that was the IDYW? Or, ironically, given the failure of IDYW to organise a successful resistance to the behavioural capture of youth work, what has been the price of the victory of Ravis pragmatic advice?

The links in the following paragraph do not work. Evidently, CYPN and its owners, the market-leading brand, Mark Allen Holdings dont do history.

The debate about youth work values and core principles continues on the pages of Children and Young People Now In the article Are government policies chipping away at youth work values? Janaki Mahadevan collects together the views of a panel of experts. Gin Blossoms Finally Acknowledge White Privilege of Letting Cops Chase You Around and Facing Zero Repercussions "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

TEMPE, Ariz. 90s alt rockers Gin Blossoms finally acknowledged their white privilege that enabled them to drive around this town being chased by the cops without any repercussions, confused and old listeners of Sirius XMs Lithium confirmed.

Anyone whos heard our music is well aware of our extreme level of whiteness. Heck, were routinely ranked between Savage Garden and Toad the Wet Sprocket as the most likely to sunburn indoors rock groups of the 90s. But we didnt learn until recently about the privilege that comes along with being the alt rock equivalent of mayonnaise on Wonder Bread, explained bassist Bill Leen. Its important now that we recognize that not every band could spend the day letting the cops chase them without facing arrest, or worse. Lets just say if it was Living Colour in that situation, the song Hey Jealousy would have ended very differently.

Random Tempe woman commuting to work Shawna Howard described a related run-in with Leen.

I saw this middle-aged white guy walking down the street and briefly stopping and speaking to every person of color. When he reached me, he said Im sorry. I asked for what and then he explained hes in the Gin Blossoms. I got excited thinking they were the guys who wrote that song from The Babysitters Club movie but apparently that was Better Than Ezra? said Howard. I suppose I appreciate what hes trying to do, even if it may negatively affect his career. Because lets face it, bands like his mostly play midwestern state fairs, and those places are teeming with corn dog-eating, anti-woke white people.

Former MTV VJ and 90s rock scene staple Matt Pinfield elaborated on this emerging trend among aging rock bands.

The one consistent throughline in the story of grunge and alternative rock is white privilege. I mean, how else could a band like Matchbox Twenty receive a record contract and radio play without it, said Pinfield. But Zoomers that are now discovering this music are viewing these lyrics through a different lens than their parents. First, consider the so-called dark secret behind the boathouse in The Toadies Possum Kingdom. And its probably best to just avoid the thorny issue that is King Missiles Detachable Penis.

In response to Gin Blossoms newly found empathy and atonement, Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind has vowed to continue being the biggest asshole of 90s rock.

Review: Radiohead Kid A "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Each week The Hard Times travels back to review an album that we probably should have when it came out. This week were looking at Radioheads iconic Kid A.

Ah, yes. Radiohead. The Reel Big Fish of electronica. The Limp Bizkit of experimental music. The Taylor Swift of art rock. A lot of things could be said about this band. Especially this critically acclaimed record.

I remember the first time I ever heard Kid A way back in the early 2000s. I had just downloaded a copy from the file-sharing behemoth known as LimeWire. If you dont remember, LimeWire was like Spotify but totally illegal because artists didnt get any money from it. Unlike Spotify where they at least get spare change here and there.

Anyway, this album was my very first introduction to the Head, and boy was I floored. The first Kid A track I downloaded was an MP3 of their song Creep. Simply incredible vibes. Next, I got M4As of Karma Police and High and Dry. Im telling you, it was such a mind-blowing start to a piece of work that it almost sounded like it could be a greatest hits album.

From there, Kid A kind of took a turn. The next songs that I downloaded were MmmBop, Enter Sandman, and Mambo No. 5. I had heard this band got pretty experimental but I was not expecting this kind of range.

At one point it sounded like I was listening to seven or eight different bands on one album. That being said, I think my favorite Radiohead song of all time is definitely Wu-Tang Clan Aint Nuthing to F With. Thats track 24 on the album. Not enough experimental art rock bands incorporate hip-hop into their sound.

This album is an absolute classic and quite possibly the most experimental record of all time. If youre a Radiohead fan, you know exactly what Im talking about already. Its just too bad LimeWire had to shut down due to the rampant copyright infringement because I never wouldve found the classic song Smells_Like_TeenSpirit by Third Eye Blind without them.

Score: Kid A+

White Jeans Attempted "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

BRUNSWICK, Maine Determined punk Leroy Ainsley decided to throw caution to the wind recently when he attempted to pull off wearing white jeans, sources confirmed amid derisive snickering.

Ill be the first to admit I was nervous to take such a big swing. Every pair of jeans Ive ever worn has been a dark blue or black, so it was going to be jarring no matter what. But I figured Id be able to make them work, said Ainsley while holding his head in his hands for several consecutive minutes. Lets just say, I was ripped to shreds the minute I stepped outside. I thought I lived in a warm, supportive community, but apparently I live on the dais of a Comedy Central Roast. Never again.

Brunswick residents of all walks were reportedly ruthless in their impromptu mockery.

I couldnt stop laughing. I mean, you could tell the little weiner was on the fence in trying them out in the first place, you could practically smell it on him. The guy had no confidence whatsoever, so I had to let him have it, said Ainsleys postal worker Helena Radscombe. Ugh, just picturing it turns my stomachwho does he think he is, fuckin Andrew W.K.? You know how people throw red paint on people in fur coats? We gotta start saving a few cans for timid bozos giving new pants a whirl. Yuck!

Denim Depot salesperson Irv Gladstone revealed that white jeans are something of an inside joke in the apparel parlance.

Ill admit, I sold the young man the jeans in question, and I dont regret it. The entire industry is corrupt when it comes to white dungarees, its an open secret, said Gladstone, nervously puffing on a cigarette. So when a rube comes in off the street wanting something fresh, we pounce. Let that be a lesson to your readers out there: never, ever try something new. Scientifically, no one can pull off white jeans unless they live in a tropical climate and are over the age of 55. But luckily for us denim salesmen, Florida exists.

At press time, Ainsley lamented that hell never have to worry about wearing jeans of any variety ever again, as the local bullies wont stop pantsing him as soon as he leaves his house.

How I Upgraded My Life by Committing a Crime in Sweden and Going to One of Their Nice Ass Prisons "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Like many of you, I used to sit in my drab apartment and dream of moving to Europe, the land of affordable train travel, relaxed attitudes towards casual nudity, and rampant alcoholism. Well, friends, Ive cracked the code.

Keep reading to learn how I moved to Sweden for at least the next 3-5 years. Maybe longer if I play my cards right.

It was a simple trick really. I just committed a string of felonies, or grov frbrytelses as theyre known in these parts. All I had to do was fall in with a gang of Swedish criminals and embark on a crime wave that landed me right here in Gothenburgs own Hrlanda Park prison!

My cell features 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a bespoke dining room set, and modern light fixtures. It also contains artwork crafted by local artisans. Furthermore, I was welcomed to the block by my neighbor, a famous bank robber named Henrik The Swedish Swindler Berg, who made me a wonderful dinner with fresh fish, dill potatoes, and lingonberry-coated meatballs.

Needless to say, this is a serious upgrade over my old apartment.

For starters, I would pay at least $2,500 a month for something like this in any major American City, and thats not counting HOA fees. And since Sweden offers free higher education to all incarcerated (and non-incarcerated) residents I figure I might as well complete that marketing degree I never finished. I considered taking some Swedish classes too, but they speak better English here than anywhere else in the world, so why bother?

Sure I miss my friends and family back home, but you have to leave the nest sometime dont you? Besides, my mom always dreamed that I would one day live in a safe neighborhood with no guns, promising career prospects, and low crime rates.

She just never thought that place would be a Swedish prison.

"IndyWatch Feed Spiritual" "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

An autistic Year 10 (or equivalent to Grade 9 in the US) student from Wakefield, England, was dismissed from his school and bombarded with death threats after an event where a Quran was allegedly disrespected.

The incident started with a wager after the unnamed 14-year-old student played Call of Duty with his friends. The winner could tell the loser what to buy or do. In this case, the autistic student lost the wage and was told to buy a copy of the Quran. He complied and purchased the holy book from Amazon.

The autistic student then brought the Quran inside the premises of Kettlethorpe High School and gave it to another student, who recited a passage from the book to other students on a tennis court. It was also revealed that an unrelated boy knocked the Quran off the students hands, causing it to fall on the floor.

Afterward, the autistic student picked up the Quran and placed it in his bag. Soon after, rumors quickly spread that the Quran was thrown around, spat at, and even burned. They were refuted by Akef Akbar, an independent Muslim councilor for East Wakefield, who posted photos of the Quran on Instagram with a caption narrating the incident.

Four students were suspended for a week since they were believed to have crossed the line. The local community set up a meeting to discuss the events that occurred and to put the citys Muslim community at ease. The assembly happened at Jamia Masjid Swafia, a mosque in Wakefield.

People who participated in the meeting include Imam Hafiz Muhammad Mateen Anwar, Inspector Glen Costello, Chief Inspector Andy Thornton, Kettlethrope High School headteacher Tudor Griff...

Iranian Feminist Artist Censored by American University, Sparking Backlash "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

An article from the British online magazine Spiked revealed that a private liberal arts college in Minnesota temporarily closed and censored an art exhibition of a feminist artist after claiming some Muslim students were offended by it.

The exhibition opened at Macalester College in St.Paul last January 27. It featured the works of Taravat Talepasand, a 44-year-old Iranian-American female artist originally hailing from Oregon. Her works often challenged political and religious orthodoxy, criticizing Islamic conservatism and the oppression of women under Islamist regimes.

Some artworks the college claimed to have shocked and offended students' sensibilities include a risqu drawing of a woman in hijab lifting her clothes and showing her underwear and another lifting her niqab to reveal her underwear while raising the middle finger.

The exhibit also featured porcelain sculptures of women in niqabs revealing their breasts. Lastly, Talepasand also featured a neon sign saying Woman, Life, Freedom in English and Persian. This slogan has become a symbol of protest against the Islamic Republic after protests broke out last year.

Not pleased with her artworks, some Macalesters student body members submitted a petition demanding to shut down the exhibition, claiming that Talepasands works caused "deep pain" and even perpetuated harm against Muslims.

Why a Cube-Shaped City in Saudi Arabia is Upsetting Muslims "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A cube-shaped megastructure for Riyadh in Saudi Arabia sparks controversy in social media for its similarity to the 'Kaaba.'

On February 16th, Saudi Arabia lifted the curtain on the latest architectural design of a cubic-shaped megastructure, which received criticism for strikingly resembling Islam's most sacred site, the Kaaba.

According to the Saudi kingdom's Public Investment Fund (PIF), the construction of "The Mukaab" - derived from the Arabic word for the cube- will occur in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh and is expected to be completed by the end of this decade.

The height, width, and length of this massive city-within-a-city will be 400 meters which is large enough to contain at least 20 Empire State Buildings. Providing over 100,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and 1.4 million square meters of office space, it will also be the home to many entertainment and culture venues.

Spearheaded by Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, this project is one of the plans to create the biggest and most advanced downtown in the world in Riyadh.

Inspired by the styles used in the Najd region in Saudi Arabia for the design and architecture, the building features overlapping triangular forms. However, some social media users have pointed out that the design is far too similar to the Kabba.

The Kabba is a cube structure at the center of Islam's most important mosque, Masjid al-Haram, in Mecca. The Muslims consider it the House of God and the Qibla (direction of prayer) when performing Namaz.

One Twitter user named Kariman said, "This is a strange choice, or is it just me? The New Mukaab, like the Kaaba but with shopping venues...?"

Indian Woman Escapes Human Sacrifice Plot "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A writ petition was filed in the Madras High Court by a 23-year-old woman who alleged that she fled her home in Madhya Pradesh because her stepmother was planning to kill her as a part of a human sacrifice ritual. She also claimed that her younger brother was killed in a past ritual.

Alongside Advocate S. Doraisamy and V. Elangovan, the petitioner appeared in court and said her friends helped her escape to Tamil Nadu for her safety.

In the affidavit she filed, the petitioner said that Uttar Pradesh was her birthplace; however, she later moved to Madhya Pradesh with her family. She also said that her father worked in the Agricultural Department but retired in 2017.

She was a student of Government Maharani Laskshmibai Girls' College in Bhopal and said that she held a Master's degree in nutrition and dietetics. Currently, she is pursuing a diploma in Yoga. She claimed that her parents forced her to become a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a right-wing all-India student organization. However, she also said that she left the organization after a while.

The petitioner allegedly accused her stepmother and other relatives of being followers of black magic after coincidentally learning about their intention to kill her to perform a human sacrifice ritual. She also heard about her younger brother's demise, who underwent the same ritual when he was only ten.

mRNA vaxx will keep on keeping on "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

By Lyndesy Symonds

As it turns out the Australians were onto SARS-Cov-2 back in April 3 2020.
Experiments at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Monash University demonstrated that the anti parasitic drug Ivermectin eliminates SARS-Cov-2 in cells in 48 hours.
https://www.monash.edu/discovery-institute/news-and-events/news/2020-articles/Lab-experiments-show-anti-parasitic-drug,-Ivermectin,-eliminates-SARS-CoV-2-in-cells-in-48-hours

Ivermectin is one of the anti-cellular infectives that Dr Peter McCullough has been PERSECUTED by the ZOG US CoVID Regime for daring to mention even indirectly. Ivermectin is on the WHO list of Essential medicines. Very few side effects. One of the safest drugs in the world. Approved by the FDA for use on humans since the 1970s. As early intervention in viral infection , it has been used with 100% success rate.

It is CRIMINAL that the Australian CoVID Regime and its Semashko prohibited the use of this medicine for patients in need of anti-cellular infectives . I do not regard all the millions of healthy, a-symptomatic CoVID + case numbers of the 2020 Pandemic Hoax as sick and in need of medicine. But for those infected with any virus, to deny them this safe, proven effective treatment and force some Emergency Use Authorisation protocol on them is CRIMINAL.

The United [Communist] Nations CoVID Regimes have killed millions of people and they have initiated a democide with a bioweapon vaxx that is going to kill millions more through the mRNA bio-tech spike protein injection. That prion is recombinant with other viruses (either dormant or endemic in the population) according to Professor Dolores Cahill. New variants will be continually created. For the depopulators the Big Powers of the United [Communist] Nations it will be the gift that just keeps on giving in terms of excess mortality.

Queensland Police Service Super Recogniser facial recognition network helps crack 1,000 cases "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The Queensland Police Services (QPS) Super Recogniser Network has marked two important milestones; identifying more than 1,000 offenders, as well as being deemed the most accurate in the world.

Super Recognisers are the top one per cent of the population who are born with the innate ability to recognise and remember a face even if theyve only seen it once, years ago.

The average person can only remember a limited amount of the faces they encounter, whereas Super Recognisers have the exceptional ability to successfully recall and identify significantly more.

Super Recogniser Senior Sergeant Chris Tritton said the skill was first discovered through research into Prosopagnosia, or Face Blindness, which is a neurological disorder characterised by the inability to recognise faces, even your own family members.

Through that work, researchers discovered the other end of the spectrum people who have long-term memory and rarely forget the face of someone theyve come into contact with, Senior Sergeant Tritton said.

In 2019, the QPS moved to capitalise on this skill and asked its officers to partake in an online test.

Twenty QPS officers were found to possess the ability and formed the QPS Super Recogniser Network a first for Australian law enforcement.

Its a skill youre born with. We would have arguments at home about who an actor was, I was always right! Senior Sergeant Tritton said.

The officers, who come from a variety of policing areas like Water Police, Patrol Services and Criminal Investigation Branches, remain in their substantive positions but take time out of each shift to conduct identifications as part of the Network.

When making an identification, initially you just get a gut feeling but then look for points of confirmation. Generally, its around the eyes and ears which tend to stay the same throughout our lives, Senior Sergeant Tritton said.

To assist, the QPS developed specialised facial-recognition software called QFACE which cross-checks the image of an offender with more than 10 million faces stored in the QPS database.

The software recommends up to 300 potential matches, with the Super Recognisers then going through to make the final identification.

Since its inception, the Network has helped to identify 1,005 offenders for crimes ranging from robberies, burglaries, sexual...

AITA for telling the new neighbors that they got what they paid for, including being shunned by the neighborhood?

Where I live, real estate developers have started snatching up family homes, bulldozing them and building enormous 2 million dollar houses on the plots of land. PMID:  Access Microbiol. 2022 ;4(4):000343. Epub 2022 Apr 26. PMID: 35812712 Abstract Title:  Antibiofilm properties offlower anthocyanin-rich fraction towards. Abstract:  In Asia, flowers are commonly used as a traditional medicinal herb and as a food colourant. Their bioactive compounds have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-biofilm activities.is one of the major pathogens that cause biofilm-associated infections resulting in an increase in antimicrobial resistance. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate if the anti-biofilm properties of the anthocyanin-rich fraction offlowers were effective against. The effect of the anthocyanin-rich fraction offlowers onbiofilms formed on a polystyrene surface was determined using the crystal violet assay and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The anthocyanin-rich fraction reduced biofilm formation by fourstrains with a minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration value ranging between 0.625 and 5.0mgml. We further show that the biofilm-inhibiting activity offlowers is not due to the flavonols but is instead attributed to the anthocyanins, which had significant biofilm inhibitory activity (64.01.1%) at 24h in a time-response study. The anthocyanin-rich fraction also significantly reduced bacterial attachment on the polystyrene by 1.1 log c.f.u. cmsurface based on SEM analysis. Hence, anthocyanins fromflowers have potential as an agent to decrease the risk of biofilm-associated infections.

PMID:  Sci Rep. 2022 Sep 1 ;12(1):14890. Epub 2022 Sep 1. PMID: 36050436 Abstract Title:  Antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities of Clitoria ternatea flower extracts and anthocyanin-rich fraction. Abstract:  Clitoria ternatea flower is a traditional medicinal herb that has been used as a natural food colourant. As there are limited studies on investigating the bioactivities of the anthocyanin-rich fraction of Clitoria ternatea flower, this study aimed to determine an efficient column chromatography method to obtain the anthocyanin-rich fraction from this flower and characterise its composition, antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities. Amberlite XAD-16 column chromatography was more efficient in enriching the total anthocyanin content (TAC) of the fraction with the highest TAC to total phenolic content (TPC) ratio of 1:6 than that using C18-OPN. A total of 11 ternatin anthocyanins were characterised in the anthocyanin-rich fraction by LC-MS analysis. The antioxidant activity of the anthocyanin-rich fraction was more potent in the chemical-based assay with an ICvalue of 0.860.07 mg/mL using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay than cellular antioxidant assay using RAW 264.7 macrophages. In vitro cytotoxicity assay using human embryonic kidney HEK-293 cell line showed the anthocyanin-rich fraction to be more toxic than the crude extracts. The anthocyanin-rich fraction had more potent antibacterial activity than the crude extracts against Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli. The anthocyanin-rich fraction of C. ternatea has the potential to be used and developed as a functional food ingredient or nutraceutical agent.

Abstract:  Millions of people suffer from snake bite envenomation, and its management is a challenge, even today. Medicinal plants have attracted the researcher's attention for their outstanding advantages in treating many diseases, including snake venom poisoning.L, is a plant popularly known for its various pharmacological effects especially, anti-snake venom property. However, the molecular mechanism behind this is poorly understood. It is reported that snake venom PLAis an extensively studied toxic factor. This study is meant to screen the compound's capability to act as inhibitors of thesnake venom PLAthrough molecular docking and dynamics studies. Our results show that among the 27 compounds taken for the study, only Kaempferol showed good interaction profile with the conserved catalytic active site residues, His48 and Asp49. The pharmacophore features of the compound also demonstrate its exact fitting at the binding pocket. Further RMSD, RMSF, Rg, and hydrogen bond analysis confirmed the stable binding of Kaempferol with PLAthrough molecular dynamic simulations for 100ns. In addition, the MM/PBSA binding free energy calculation of the complex was also affirming the docking results. The binding free energy (BFE) of Kaempferolis better than the reference compound. PMID:  Molecules. 2022 Sep 26 ;27(19). Epub 2022 Sep 26. PMID: 36234873 Abstract Title:  Phytochemical Properties and In Vitro Biological Activities of Phenolic Compounds from Flower ofL. Abstract:  Phenolic compounds from the flower ofL. (PCFCTL) were extracted using a high-speed shearing extraction technique and purified by AB-8 macroporous resins, and the phytochemical composition of the purified phenolic compounds from the flower ofL. (PPCFCTL) was then analyzed. Subsequently, its bioactivities including antioxidant properties, enzyme inhibitory activities, and antiproliferative activities against several tumor cell lines were evaluated. Results indicated that the contents of total phenolics, flavonoids, flavonols, flavanols, and phenolic acids in PPCFCTL were increased by 3.29, 4.11, 2.74, 2.43, and 2.96-fold, respectively, compared with those before being purified by AB-8 macroporous resins. The results showed PPCFCTL have significant antioxidant ability (measured by reducing power, RP, and ferric reducing antioxidant power method, FRAP) and good DPPH, ABTS, and superoxide anion radical scavenging activities. They can also significantly inhibit lipase,-amylase, and-glucosidase. In addition, morphological changes of HeLa, HepG2, and NCI-H460 tumor cells demonstrated the superior antitumor performance of PPCFCTL. However, the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity was relatively weak. These findings suggest that PPCFCTL have important potential as natural antioxidant, antilipidemic, anti-glycemic and antineoplastic agents in health-promoting foods.

Effects of a plant cyclotide on conformational dynamics and destabilization of -amyloid fibrils through molecular dynamics simulations. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Front Mol Biosci. 2022 ;9:986704. Epub 2022 Sep 30. PMID: 36250019 Abstract Title:  Effects of a plant cyclotide on conformational dynamics and destabilization of-amyloid fibrils through molecular dynamics simulations. Abstract:  Aggregation of-amyloid (A) peptide is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) which results in chronic and progressive neurodegeneration of the brain. A recent study by our group have shown the ability of cyclic disulfide-rich peptides ("cyclotides") isolated from a medicinal plant,, to inhibit the aggregation of Apeptides and reduce oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species usingmodels of transgenic. In the present study, through extensive computational docking and multi-ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, we evaluated if cyclotides can stably bind to Amolecules and/or destabilize the Afibril by preventing conformational changes from-helical to-sheet rich structures. We demonstrate that cyclotides bind effectively and stably to different forms of Astructureshydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. One of the conserved hydrophobic interface residues, Tyr10 was mutated to Ala and the impact of this virtual mutation was estimated by additional MD simulations for the wild-type (WT) and mutant protein-peptide complexes. A detailed MD simulation analyses revealed that cyclotides form hydrogen bonds with the toxic amyloid assemblies thereby weakening the inter-strand hydrogen bonds between the Apeptide. The-distribution map of residues in the cyclotide binding pocket that ideally adopt-sheet conformation show deviation towards right-handed-helical () conformation. This effect was similar to that observed for the Tyr10Ala mutant and doubly so, for the cyclotide bound form. It is therefore possible to hypothesise that the opening up of amyloid-sheet is due to an unfolding process occurring in the Acaused by cyclotide binding and inhibition. Our current findings provide novel structural insights on the mode of interaction between cyclotides and Afibrils and describe their anti-amyloid aggregation potential. This sheds light on the future of cyclotide-based drug design against protein aggregation, a hallmark event in many neurodegenerative diseases.

PMID: 36422526 Abstract Title:  Asian Pigeonwing Plants () Synergized Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Modulating the Inflammatory Response in Rats with Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury. Abstract:  Acute kidney injury is a heterogeneous set of disorders distinguished by a sudden decrease in the glomerular filtration rate, which is evidenced by an increase in the serum creatinine concentration or oliguria and categorized by stage and cause. It is an ever-growing health problem worldwide, with no reliable treatment. In the present study, we evaluated the role ofcombined with mesenchymal stem cells in treating cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury in rats. Animals were challenged with cisplatin, followed by 400 mg/kg of Asian pigeonwing extract and/or mesenchymal stem cells (106 cells/150 g body weight). Kidney functions and enzymes were recorded, and histopathological sectioning was also performed. The expression profile of IL-1, IL-6, and caspase-3 was assessed using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The obtained data indicated that mesenchymal stem cells combined with the botanical extract modulated the creatinine uric acid and urea levels. Cisplatin increased the level of malondialdehyde and decreased the levels of both superoxide dismutase and glutathione; however, the dual treatment was capable of restoring the normal levels. Furthermore, all treatments modulated the IL-6, IL-1, and caspase-3 gene expression profiles. The obtained data shed some light on adjuvant therapy usingand mesenchymal stem cells in treating acute kidney injury; however, further investigations are required to understand these agents' synergistic mechanisms fully. The total RNA was extracted from the control, the positive control, and all of the therapeutically treated animals. The expression profiles of the IL-6, IL-1, and caspase-3 genes were evaluated using the real-time polymerase chain reaction. Cisplatin treatment caused a significant upregulation in IL-6. All treatments could mitigate the IL-6-upregulating effect of cisplatin, with the mesenchymal stem cell treatment being the most effective. The same profile was observed in the IL-1and caspase-3 genes, except that the dual treatment (mesenchymal stem cells and the botanical extract) was the most effective in ameliorating the adverse effect of cisplatin; it downregulated caspase-3 expression better than the positive control.

Clitoria ternatea blue petal extract protects against obesity, oxidative stress, and inflammation induced by a high-fat, high-fructose diet. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Food Res Int. 2022 Dec ;162(Pt A):112008. Epub 2022 Oct 1. PMID: 36461234 Abstract Title:  Clitoria ternatea blue petal extract protects against obesity, oxidative stress, and inflammation induced by a high-fat, high-fructose diet in C57BL/6 mice. Abstract:  This study examined the chemical compounds and bioactivity of the aqueous extract of Clitoria ternatea blue petals and investigated its beneficial effects in vivo on a mouse model of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The extract mainly contained flavonoids, and nine compounds were tentatively identified. Male C57BL/6J mice were either fed a standard diet (SD) or a high-fat, high-fructose diet (HFFD) for 16 weeks, and HFFD-fed animals were treated with 0.25%, 0.5%, and 2% (w/w) of the aqueous extract in drinking water. The aqueous extract ameliorated oxidative stress and inflammation mediators. Furthermore, the aqueous extract reduced plasma leptin, free fatty acid, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and hepatic malondialdehyde content. The aqueous extract significantly reduced total cholesterol and ameliorated insulin resistance. The results demonstrated that the aqueous extract of C. ternatea blue petals contains bioactive anthocyanins that exert substantial hypolipidemic and anti-inflammatory effects by promoting reverse cholesterol transport in HFFD-fed mice.

Why Molecular Hydrogen Is a Superior Antioxidant "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In this interview, repeat guest Tyler LeBaron, MSc., Ph.D., reviews some of the many benefits of molecular hydrogen (H2). Perhaps most importantly, molecular hydrogen acts as a selective antioxidant, meaning it doesn't indiscriminately suppress free radicals.

It uses your body's own biological systems and feedback loops to identify where and when you're under oxidative stress, and when found, antioxidant genes are stimulated and key antioxidants are transcribed from your DNA. So, molecular hydrogen is not in and of itself a direct radical-scavenging antioxidant. Rather, it helps your body make its own endogenous antioxidants. This is what makes molecular hydrogen so unique.

This is crucial because excessive antioxidants use can be deleterious and molecular hydrogen serves as a redox regulator, so, just like Goldilocks, you get just the right amount, not too much and not too little, which makes your cells very happy.

H2 Activates Nrf2 Pathway

One of the pathways activated by H2 when free radicals are present is the Nrf2 pathway. LeBaron explains:

"In your cell you have this protein, Nrf2, and it's attached to Keap1. They're always attached together. But when you get oxidative stress it can cleave off.

[Oxidative stress] causes the cleaving off of the Nrf2 and the Keap1, and the Nrf2 can then diffuse into the nucleus [where] it binds to the ARE, the antioxidant response element of the DNA. [This triggers] the production of all these endogenous antioxidants Phase 2 enzymes of detoxification and antioxidation and there are over 200 of them."

This is one of the primary benefits of molecular hydrogen. It's also what makes molecular hydrogen so useful for such a wide variety of conditions. According to LeBaron, it's been shown to have therapeutic benefits in more than 170 different animal disease models.

"What this means is, for example, there are lots of ways to induce diabetes in an animal model. Using these different models, we can show molecular hydrogen has therapeutic effects. And, yes, the Nrf2 in some cases seems to be extremely important. In fact, by using gene knockout or or interfering RNA, you can blunt the benefits of molecular hydrogen. So, the Nrf2 is very important," LeBaron says.

Molecular Hydrogen Is an Important Nrf2 Regulator

Sulforaphane, found in broccoli, is another well-studied Nrf2 activator. But in contrast to sulforaphane (as well as other Nrf2 activators), molecular hydrogen does not disturb redox homeostasis within the cell by adding too many antioxidants.

The Truth Will Set You Free "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In the video above, I'm interviewed by Jason Shurka, author of several books1 about sacred knowledge, the raising of consciousness and the power we have within.

While my focus has always been to help people take control of their health and achieve optimal well-being by addressing basic lifestyle factors, in recent years, it's become necessary to also enlighten people about the global forces that are trying to seize control, with the ultimate goal of eliminating human rights and freedoms, including your medical freedom.

It's become imperative to understand what these larger forces are trying to achieve, because they're driving The Great Reset agendas, which encompass every aspect of our lives, including food and health care. If you don't understand what their goal is, you will naively go along and become an unwitting victim.

Google Is at the Core of the Global Cabal

As I explain in the interview, Google is a core powerbase of this global cabal, often referred to as the Deep State a hidden power structure based on wealth and financial influence behind (and above) the individual governments of the world because the cabal's control powers hinge on electronic surveillance and social engineering.

Both require massive amounts of data on each individual, and artificial intelligence to predict and control behaviors. Google is the largest controller of data and owns the most advanced AI company in the world. Through their search engine alone, Google controls at least 93% and possibly over 95% of what people are able to see.

They hold the keys to the knowledge of humanity, stored on the internet. And if they don't like what you say, they can bury you to the point where you basically cease to exist. You have no reach, no voice.

I'm no stranger to this censorship process, as I've been under attack ever since I started my website 25 years ago. In 2018, Google finally pulled the plug on me and buried my articles in the deepest recesses of its search engine.

Now, what you find about me are articles that discredit me. You also have to dig deep into the search results to find good information relating to health, nutrition and medicine in general.

There Are Many Levels of Censorship

Pandemic Bill Mandate Accelerated 5G Rollout "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From Dr. Joseph Mercola

Since COVID-19 first entered the scene, exchange of ideas has basically been outlawed. By sharing my views and those from various experts throughout the pandemic on COVID treatments and the experimental COVID jabs, I became a main target of the White House, the political establishment and the global cabal.

Propaganda and pervasive censorship have been deployed to seize control over every part of your life, including your health, finances and food supply. The major media are key players and have been instrumental in creating and fueling fear.

I am republishing this article in its original form so that you can see how the progression unfolded.

In March 2020, with the U.S. reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Secure 5G and Beyond Act (S. 893) and the Broadband Deployment Accuracy and Technological Availability Act (S. 1822) were signed into law.

The duo will accelerate the adoption of 5G, or 5th Generation, wireless networks across the U.S. and in so doing, force Americans to receive unprecedented levels of exposure to the millimeter wave (MMW), which has shown potential to harm human health and the environment.

The 5G act requires the president to develop a strategy to ensure the security of 5G mobile telecommunications systems and infrastructures in the U.S., while assisting allies and strategic partners to maximize the security of such systems.1

The Broadband act requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to issue rules regarding data collection to ultimately improve the accuracy of maps showing where broadband is available in the U.S.2

Whats more, the 5G Act requires the president to consult with the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense and other agencies and submit a plan to Congress within 180 days detailing how secure 5G will be implemented.

With millions of Americans suddenly working remotely, its an opportune time for regulators to move 5G forward but its a move that has many experts concerned. Still, the legislation is moving forward under the guise of bringing faster internet to Americans, at any cost. Decreases in inflammatory levels in patients with multiple sclerosis after treatment with epigallocatechin gallate and coconut oil. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Nutrients. 2021 Sep 16 ;13(9). Epub 2021 Sep 16. PMID: 34579104 Abstract Title:  Possible Role of Butyrylcholinesterase in Fat Loss and Decreases in Inflammatory Levels in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis after Treatment with Epigallocatechin Gallate and Coconut Oil: A Pilot Study. Abstract:  (1) Background. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterised by the loss of muscle throughout the course of the disease, which in many cases is accompanied by obesity and related to inflammation. Nonetheless, consuming epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and ketone bodies (especially-hydroxybutyrate (HB)) produced after metabolising coconut oil, have exhibited anti-inflammatory effects and a decrease in body fat. In addition, butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), seems to be related to the pathogenesis of the disease associated with inflammation, and serum concentrations have been related to lipid metabolism. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the role of BuChE in the changes caused after treatment with EGCG and ketone bodies on the levels of body fat and inflammation state in MS patients. (2) Methods. A pilot study was conducted for 4 months with 51 MS patients who were randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received 800 mg of EGCG and 60 mL of coconut oil, and the control group was prescribed a placebo. Fat percentage and concentrations of the butyrylcholinesterase enzyme (BuChE), paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity, triglycerides, interleukin 6 (IL-6), albumin andHB in serum were measured. (3) Results. The intervention group exhibited significant decreases in IL-6 and fat percentage and significant increases in BuChE,HB, PON1, albumin and functional capacity (determined by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)). On the other hand, the control group only exhibited a decrease in IL-6. After the intervention, BuChE was positively correlated with the activity of PON1, fat percentage and triglycerides in the intervention group, whereas these correlations were not observed in the control group (4). Conclusions. BuChE seems to have an important role in lipolytic activity and the inflammation state in MS patients, evidenced after administering EGCG and coconut oil as aHB source.

Improvements in gait and balance in patients with multiple sclerosis after treatment with coconut oil and epigallocatechin gallate. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Food Funct. 2023 Jan 23 ;14(2):1062-1071. Epub 2023 Jan 23. PMID: 36594273 Abstract Title:  Improvements in gait and balance in patients with multiple sclerosis after treatment with coconut oil and epigallocatechin gallate. A pilot study. Abstract:  Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that progressively decreases the muscular and functional capacity. Thus, there is an alteration in the ability to walk that affects balance, speed and resistance. Since MS pathology involves neuroinflammation, cellular oxidation and mitochondrial alterations, the objective of the study was to assess the impact of a nutritional intervention with coconut oil and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on gait and balance. In order to do this, 51 patients with MS were enrolled and randomly distributed into an intervention group and a control group, which received either a daily dose of 800 mg of EGCG and 60 ml of coconut oil, or a placebo, all during a period of 4 months and which followed a Mediterranean isocaloric diet. Initial and final assessments consisted of the evaluation of quantitative balance (Berg scale), perceived balance (ABC scale), gait speed (10MWT) and resistance (2MWT). Besides, muscle strength was measured using a dynamometer and levels of-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) were measured in serum samples. In the intervention group, there was a significant improvement in the gait speed, quantitative balance and muscle strength of the right quadriceps; an improvement in gait resistance was observed in both groups. There were also significant and positive correlations between balance and gait scales. In conclusion, the administration of EGCG and coconut oil seems to improve gait speed and balance in MS patients, although the latter was not perceived by them. Furthermore, these variables appear to be related and contribute to functionality.

Right Place "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

By Cathy Jameson Home heart

A few times now when I'm scheduled to leave the house later than usual, something has happened with Ronan - a fever, a possible seizure (they can happen so fast), or a wonky episode of something worrisome (I don't know yet what to call it).  It happened again one day last week.  Ronan looked confused, held his head, closed his eyes and looked wobbly on his feet.  I was worried, since it whatever it was, came out of the blue.

While getting him off his feet and to the couch, I sat next to him, ready to administer emergency seizure medication, should it be a seizure.  I was ready to clean up throw up, should it have been an upset tummy rumbling.  But Ronan, who could only grip my arms as I reached out to hold him, laid on the couch and drifted off to sleep.  He ended up taking two naps, even though hed had a great night of sleep.

The day that happened, I wasnt scheduled to leave the house until 1:00.

The time before, he was also wobbly on his feet and knew something was different but couldnt express anything but a worried look on his face.  Ronan had woken up that day and was fine but then wasnt.  That day was the first day that my work hours had changed, and I happened to be home.  Both times, I didn't know it, whatever it is, was going to happen, but God knew I needed to be with my bud.  I got to hold his hand, to calm his nerves, to settle him quickly, to watch him quietly fall back asleep to witnessing him wake up refreshed as if nothing worrisome or wonky had just happened.

Ive spent the last few days trying to figure out what triggered the odd episodes.  We havent changed brands of foods he and I have for breakfast.  The supplements taken are the same as always.  Other products found in a home laundry soap, dish soap, bath soap and more, are all the same.  Granted, we had the huge medication fiasco a few weeks ago, but this happened while on generics and since hes been back on his regular doses and brands.  I joked with a friend when I knew Id be home all morning again, I hope nothing happens to Ronan while Im home past lunchtime!  All joking aside, its just so odd and definitely something I definitely need to track.

I was thankful I was home both times.  I truly felt like I was at the right place at the right time.

Another time, I was thankful for somethin...

Spontaneous regression of herniated cervical disc: A case report and literature review. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Surg Neurol Int. 2021 ;12:141. Epub 2021 Apr 8. PMID: 33948312 Abstract Title:  Spontaneous regression of herniated cervical disc: A case report and literature review. Abstract:  BACKGROUND: We have reviewed 75 cases plus our own single instance of spontaneous regression of herniated cervical discs.METHODS: We searched PubMed and EMBASE databases (until September 2020) utilizing the following keywords; "spontaneous regression," "herniated cervical disc," and "Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies."RESULTS: In the literature, we found 75 cases of herniated cervical discs which spontaneously regressed; to this, we added our case. Patients averaged 40.95 years of age. Discs were paracentral or foraminal in 84% of the cases, with most occurring at the C5-C6 (51%) and C6-C7 (36%) levels. Symptoms included neck pain/radiculopathy (91%) or myelopathy (9%). The average interval between initial presentation and spontaneous regression of herniated discs on MRI was 9.15 months. Interestingly, on MRI, extruded/sequestrated discs were more likely to undergo spontaneous regression versus protruding discs.CONCLUSION: Successive MRI studies documented the spontaneous regression of herniated cervical discs over an average of 9.15 months. Although this may prompt greater consideration for conservative treatment in younger patients without neurologic deficits, those with deficits should be considered for surgery.

Spontaneous resorption of herniated lumbar disk: observational retrospective study in 9 patients. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  World Neurosurg. 2019 Jan 3. Epub 2019 Jan 3. PMID: 30610984 Abstract Title:  Spontaneous Resorption of Herniated Lumbar Disk: Observational Retrospective Study in 9 Patients. Abstract:  BACKGROUND: Spontaneous resorption of herniated lumbar disk was explained in the literature by different mechanisms, and multiple predictive factors for resorption were reported in numerous studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phenomena of spontaneous resorption of herniated lumbar disk without surgery (mechanisms, predictive factors, expected time for resorption, and proper time for conservative treatment).METHODS: This retrospective clinical case series included 9 patients with herniated lumbar disk on initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The mean age was 396.3 years, and the male to female ratio was 2:1. All patients presented with back pain and sciatica without motor deficit. All patients refused surgical intervention; therefore, they were treated conservatively. Patients were followed-up clinically and radiologically (MRI) in the outpatient clinic on regular visits (for 18 months).RESULTS: Spontaneous resorption of herniated disk was found in all patients in a mean time of 8.73.2 months. All patients recovered clinically in a mean time of 5.71.6 weeks by conservative treatment. Large and/or sequestrated disks were associated with rapid resorption. Early recovery patients showed early spontaneous resorption of the disk.CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous resorption of herniated lumbar disk can occur by different mechanisms (retraction, dehydration, and inflammatory mediated mechanism). Large and/or sequestrated disks are essential predictive factors for rapid spontaneous resorption. Furthermore, early clinical recovery is usually associated with quick resorption of the herniated disk.

Potential ergogenic activity of grape juice in runners. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Appl Physiol Nutr Metab. 2015 Sep ;40(9):899-906. Epub 2015 May 4. PMID: 26288392 Abstract Title:  Potential ergogenic activity of grape juice in runners. Abstract:  Recent studies have indicated that certain food products have ergogenic potential similar to that of sports supplements. The present study aimed to investigate the potential ergogenic effect of integral purple grape juice on the performance of recreational runners. Twenty-eight volunteers of both sexes (age, 39.88.5 years; peak oxygen consumption, 43.28.5 mL/(kgmin)) were randomized into either a group that received grape juice (grape juice group (GJG), n = 15; 10 mL/(kgmin) for 28 days) or a group that received an isocaloric, isoglycemic, and isovolumetric control beverage (control group (CG), n = 13). A time-to-exhaustion exercise test, anaerobic threshold test, and aerobic capacity test were performed, together with assessments of markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, immune response, and muscle injury, performed at baseline and 48 h after the supplementation protocol. The GJG showed a significant increase (15.3%) in running time-to-exhaustion (p = 0.002) without significant improvements in either anaerobic threshold (3.6%; p = 0.511) or aerobic capacity (2.2%; p = 0.605). In addition, GJG exhibited significant increases in total antioxidant capacity (38.7%; p = 0.009), vitamin A (11.8%; p = 0.016), and uric acid (28.2%; p = 0.005), whereas-1-acid glycoprotein significantly decreased (20.2%; p = 0.006) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels remained unchanged. In contrast, no significant changes occurred in any of these variables in the CG. In conclusion, supplementation with purple grape juice shows an ergogenic effect in recreational runners by promoting increased time-to-exhaustion, accompanied by increased antioxidant activity and a possible reduction in inflammatory markers.

Abstract:  PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of a single dose of juice on physical performance, oxidative stress, inflammation and muscle damage in runners.METHODS: Fourteen recreational male runners (399 years, VO=55.96.5 ml/kg/min) performed two running tests to exhaustion at 80% of VOafter ingesting grape juice or a placebo drink (10 ml/kg/day) randomly. Blood samples were taken before and 2 h after supplementation and immediately after running to analyze total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (A1GPA), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).RESULTS: The participants ran for an average of 59.227.8 min until exhaustion in the placebo group and for 68.429.7 min until exhaustion in the grape juice intake group, which was a significantly longer time (p=0.008). This improvement in physical performance was accompanied by a 43.6% increase in TAC (p=0.000) at the post-exercise timepoint compared to the level at baseline. MDA, A1GPA, hs-CRP, CK, and LDH did not exhibit changes. In contrast, no significant change in any variable was observed after consuming the placebo drink.CONCLUSION: The single-dose intake of purple grape juice demonstrated an ergogenic effect in recreational runners by increasing run time to exhaustion and increasing antioxidant activity.

PMID:  Complement Ther Med. 2020 Nov ;54:102570. Epub 2020 Sep 15. PMID: 33183673 Abstract Title:  Effects of grape juice consumption on oxidative stress and inflammation in male volleyball players: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Abstract:  INTRODUCTION: Some foods are also demonstrated benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and ergogenic activity, similar to that of sports supplements. Grape juice has been considered an important source of polyphenols and these compounds could promote positive effects to the sports players. In this sense, the objective was to evaluate the effects of purple grape juice consumption on indicators of oxidative stress, inflammation, muscle damage, global histone H4 acetylation levels, and muscle strength and muscle power in volleyball athletes.METHODS: This is a randomized double-blind clinical trial in which 12 male volleyball players (160.6 years old) participated in three different moments with match simulation: control (without beverage) (WB), grape juice (GJ) and placebo (PLA) (400 mL/day of grape juice or placebo (maltodextrin) for 14 days in a cross-over model). Before and immediately after each match, blood collection for analysis of indicators of systemic redox status, systemic concentrations of Interferon-(IFN-) and Interleukin-4 (IL-4), muscle damage, by Creatine Kinase (CK-NAC) and levels of global histone H4 acetylation were performed, as well as handgrip strength (HG) and lower limb power tests.RESULTS: Consumption of grape juice significantly reduced lipid peroxidation (p = 0.04) and Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) damage (p = 0.01) after the match. IFN-levels, IL-4, CK-NAC, and histone H4 acetylation post-match did not alter with the grape juice consumption. Lower limb power improved after acute exercise in WB and GJ conditions (p

Consumption of grape juice can improve parameters of oxidative stress by reducing the lipid and DNA damage. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  An Acad Bras Cienc. 2020 ;92(4):e20191551. Epub 2020 Nov 20. PMID: 33237140 Abstract Title:  Effects of grape juice consumption on muscle fatigue and oxidative stress in judo athletes: a randomized clinical trial. Abstract:  Physiological levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important for intracellular and extracellular redox regulation in signaling and defense processes. Strenuous exercise can also contribute to this imbalance, and the muscle fatigue, evidenced by impaired strength or power generation, can be caused by various reasons, including oxidative stress. Antioxidants can prevent the formation of ROS by intercepting free radicals. Twenty judo athletes were included in this randomized, double-blind clinical trial into grape juice and placebo groups, and they consumed grape juice or placebo daily for 14 days in a crossover model. The outcomes were analyzed before and after combat simulations. The upper limb strength was higher in the grape juice group than in the placebo (p [group] = 0.003). The lipid damage levels were 10% higher in the placebo group (p [interaction] = 0.048). During the pre-exercise, the placebo group showed 19% more DNA damage than the grape juice group. The superoxide dismutase activity was 80% lower in the grape juice group (p [interaction]

Ultra-low-dose estriol and Lactobacillus acidophilus vaginal tablets for vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal breast cancer patients. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2014 Jun ;145(2):371-9. Epub 2014 Apr 10. PMID: 24718774 Abstract Title:  Ultra-low-dose estriol and Lactobacillus acidophilus vaginal tablets (Gynoflor()) for vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal breast cancer patients on aromatase inhibitors: pharmacokinetic, safety, and efficacy phase I clinical study. Abstract:  Phase I pharmacokinetic (PK) study assessed circulating estrogens in breast cancer (BC) patients on a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (NSAI) with vaginal atrophy using vaginal ultra-low-dose 0.03 mg estriol (E3) and Lactobacillus combination vaginal tablets (Gynoflor()). 16 women on NSAI with severe vaginal atrophy applied a daily vaginal tablet of Gynoflor() for 28 days followed by a maintenance therapy of 3 tablets weekly for 8 weeks. Primary outcomes were serum concentrations and PK of E3, estradiol (E2), and estrone (E1) using highly sensitive gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Secondary outcomes were clinical measures for efficacy and side effects; microscopic changes in vaginal epithelium and microflora; and changes in serum FSH, LH, and sex hormone-binding globulin. Compared with baseline, serum E1 and E2 did not increase in any of the women at any time following vaginal application. Serum E3 transiently increased after the first application in 15 of 16 women, with a maximum of 168 pg/ml 2-3 h post-insertion. After 4 weeks, serum E3 was slightly increased in 8 women with a maximum of 44 pg/ml. The vaginal atrophy resolved or improved in all women. The product was well tolerated, and discontinuation of therapy was not observed. The low-dose 0.03 mg E3 and Lactobacillus acidophilus vaginal tablets application in postmenopausal BC patients during AI treatment suffering from vaginal atrophy lead to small and transient increases in serum E3, but not E1 or E2, and therefore can be considered as safe and efficacious for treatment of atrophic vaginitis in BC patients taking NSAIs.

High-dose vitamin C is an effective and safe therapeutic option to decrease the frequency of infections and enhance immune reconstitution after bone marrow transplantation. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Int J Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2022 Sep ;60(9):384-391. PMID: 35713160 Abstract Title:  Effect of vitamin C on immune reconstitution after bone marrow transplantation. Abstract:  BACKGROUND: Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for the adequate function and maturation of the immune system. In vitro studies show that the development, proliferation, and functioning of T cells requires vitamin C, especially for natural killer (NK) cells. Their deficiency during the acute phase post-transplantation could cause greater morbidity and mortality in these patients. A prospective clinical trial using high-dose vitamin C was performed to determine if vitamin C supplementation improves reconstitution of NK lymphocytes after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 24 patients who underwent autologous HSCT for multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Patients were randomized to receive standard treatment or standard treatment plus 20 g vitamin C once daily (1 - 10 days) and 500 mg twice daily (11 - 100 days) after transplantation.RESULTS: NK and CD3lymphocytes showed an increase from days +30 to +100 only in the vitamin C-treated group. Patients in the vitamin C group had a lower frequency of infections. No severe adverse events were reported.CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that high-dose vitamin C supplementation is an effective and safe therapeutic option to decrease the frequency of infections and enhance immune reconstitution after HSCT.

My Climate Change Awareness "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Signing the Climate Emergency Declaration 2016

The first written mention I made about climate change that I can now locate is in some poetry written about 1988. However as a layman generally interested in conservation matters I was aware of the problem much earlier than this probably around the late 70s to early 80s. I have a vague recollection of writing a letter on the subject to then Senator Don Chipp, but have no record of it. I can clearly remember discussing it at a party with Ian Enting then a member of the CSIRO Atmospheric physics group about 1985 and him saying words to the effect that there is no debate in the scientific community about whether global warming was occurring. The debate is over how bad it will be.

The following year our family joined a co-operative holiday house at Lake Bunga. Besides Ian Enting there were two other members from the CSIRO Atmospheric physics group Roger Francey and Barrie Pittock. I can say without doubt that I have been heavily influenced and guided by these individuals and in particular by Barrie.

At this stage of my life I was immersed in research and writing on aspects of Gippsland history frontier conflict and a local union history and had little time for pushing the climate problem politically. As well I was broke. Thus my primary effort was earning a quid and the history projects took up my spare time. By about 1995 my finances had stabilized and the following year I began writing what turned out to be a monthly column for the Libertarian Workers in Melbourne. The column went for ten years and opinion and comments on global warming were mentioned on a number of occasions some of which I have republished (See here and here).

But it was not until the record breaking Antarctic ice minimum in 2007 that I fully comprehended the existential threat of global warming that we were in a climate emergency. From that point on I was active spreading the word whenever I was able and on a daily basis after I retired in 2010. Much of this activity was political and involve...

Hot Diggity's knee replacement thread "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Here we go again. After a very successful hip replacement in March of this year I had a total knee replacement (knee arthroplasty) today. I also got a new knee cap, whatever that's called. ;)

This knee had been going down hill slowly since I had the leg crushed in 1982. I haven't been able to straighten the knee since then, and the doctor measured the angle at 19 degrees. The new knee has only a 1 degree bend. The muscles and tendons are all accustomed to the old bend and they'll need...

Effect of high-intensity interval training in patients with atrial fibrillation. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  JAMA Netw Open. 2022 Oct 3 ;5(10):e2239380. Epub 2022 Oct 3. PMID: 36315143 Abstract Title:  Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Abstract:  IMPORTANCE: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) experience poor functional capacity and quality of life (QOL). High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to elicit greater improvements in functional capacity and QOL compared with moderate to vigorous intensity continuous training (MICT) in other cardiovascular populations, yet HIIT remains understudied in AF.OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of 12 weeks of HIIT and MICT-based cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) on functional capacity and general QOL in patients with persistent and permanent AF. Disease-specific QOL, resting heart rate (HR), time in AF, and physical activity (PA) levels were also assessed.DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial, conducted between November 17, 2015, and February 4, 2020, at a tertiary-care cardiovascular health center in Ottawa, Canada, recruited 94 patients with persistent and permanent AF.INTERVENTIONS: High-intensity interval training (23 minutes: two 8-minute interval training blocks of 30-second work periods at 80%-100% of peak power output interspersed with 30-second recovery) or CR (60 minutes: continuous aerobic conditioning within 67%-95% of peak HR and 12-16 of 20 ratings of perceived exertion) twice weekly for 12 weeks.MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcomes were changes in functional capacity (6-minute walk test [6MWT] distance) and general QOL (Short Form 36) from baseline to 12 weeks' follow-up. Secondary outcomes included changes in disease-specific QOL (Atrial Fibrillation Severity Scale), resting HR, time in AF, and PA levels. An intention-to-treat analysis was used to compare changes between groups.RESULTS: Of the 94 patients who consented, 86 participated (mean [SD] age, 69 [7] years; 57 [66.3%] men). No significant differences in improvements in 6MWT distance (mean [SD], 21.3 [34.1] vs 13.2 [55.2] m; P=.42) and general QOL (Physical Component Summary, 0.5[6.1] vs 1.1 [4.9] points; P=.87) between HIIT and CR were observed. No significant differences in improvements in disease-specific QOL (AF symptoms: -1.7 [4.3] vs -1.5 [4] points, P=.59), resting HR (-3.6 [10.6] vs -2.9 [12.4] beats per minute, P=.63), and moderate to vigorous PA levels (37.3 [93.4] vs 14.4 [125.7] min/wk; P=.35) between HIIT and CR were detected. Participants attended a mean (SD) of 18.3 (6.1) (75.1%) HIIT sessions and 20.0 (4.5) (83.4%) CR sessions (P=.36).CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this randomized clinical trial, twice-weekly 23-minute HIIT was as efficacious as twice-weekly 60-minute CR in improving functional capacity, general...

High-intensity interval training improves metabolic syndrome in women with breast cancer receiving anthracyclines. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2022 Nov 25. Epub 2022 Nov 25. PMID: 36427275 Abstract Title:  High-intensity interval training improves metabolic syndrome in women with breast cancer receiving Anthracyclines. Abstract:  INTRODUCTION: Anthracycline chemotherapy is a frequent treatment for breast cancer, whereas it can increase risk of physiologic side-effects, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). Exercise has been used as a non-pharmacological strategy to decrease MetS. Specifically, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to improve MetS in patients with diabetes or cardiac rehabilitation patients; however, the effects of HIIT on MetS and associated biomarkers in patients with breast cancer receiving anthracycline chemotherapy have not been previously explored. Therefore, we purposed to determine the effects of HIIT on MetS in breast cancer patients undergoing anthracycline chemotherapy.METHODS: In total, 30 patients with breast cancer were recruited prior to initiating treatment and randomized into HIIT (n = 15) or control (n = 15). The HIIT group attended supervised cycling sessions 3days/week for 8weeks. MetS was assessed by waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides, and glucose. Circulating levels of MetS-related biomarkers were also measured (total cholesterol, insulin, HbA1c, leptin, adiponectin, and c-reactive protein).RESULTS: After 8weeks, MetS z-score was significantly improved in the HIIT group compared with controls (-7.60, 95% CI: -9.08 to -6.13, p

The effect of high intensity interval training with genistein supplementation on mitochondrial function in the heart tissue. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Exp Gerontol. 2023 Jan ;171:112039. Epub 2022 Nov 25. PMID: 36442700 Abstract Title:  The effect of high intensity interval training with genistein supplementation on mitochondrial function in the heart tissue of elderly rats. Abstract:  INTRODUCTION: For the most part, heart disease increases with age; on the other hand, although the role of exercise and antioxidants in the health of the elderly has been reported, the simultaneous effect of these two interventions is a new research topic. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of eight weeks of high intensity interval training (HIIT) and genistein (G) supplementation on oxidative stress, apoptosis and mitochondrial biogenesis in the heart tissue of elderly rats.METHODS: In this experimental study, 40 elderly female Sprague-Dawley rats aged 20  2 months and weighing 250  30 g were randomly divided into five groups of eight animals, including: (1) control (C), (2) sham (Sh), (3) HIIT, (4) HIIT + G and (5) G. Also, to evaluate the effect of time passage on the variables, 8 healthy young rats were included in the healthy young control group. HIIT protocol was performed for eight weeks, three sessions with an intensity of 95-90 % VOat high intensity intervals and 45-45 % VOat low intensity intervals. Ge was received daily at a dose of 60 mg/kg peritoneally. Data analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test (P  0.05).RESULTS: In the HIIT and HIIT + G groups, levels of Bax, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, MDA, PAB, GSSG were lower and levels of PGC-1, TFAM, GSH, GSH/GSSG ratio and NDUFS7 were higher than the control and sham groups (P  0.05). In the HIIT + G group, levels of Bcl-2 were significantly higher than the control group (P  0.05). In the HIIT + G group, levels of Bax, GSSG, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and PAB were lower, and levels of GSH/GSSG ratio, Bcl-2, PGC-1, TFAM and NDUFS7 were higher than the G consumption group (P  0.05). In the HIIT + G group, levels of PGC-1and TFAM were significantly higher and levels of MDA and PAB were lower than the HIIT group (P  0.05).CONCLUSION: Both HIIT and G consumption seem to have beneficial effects on reducing oxidative stress; in addition, the interaction of these two variables on the improvement of apoptosis and mitochondrial biogenesis is more favorable than the effect of either one alone. However, more studies are needed on different pathways of apoptosis following G administration.

The impact of high-intensity interval training on vascular function in adults. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Front Cardiovasc Med. 2022 ;9:1046560. Epub 2022 Nov 17. PMID: 36465439 Abstract Title:  The impact of high-intensity interval training on vascular function in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Abstract:  AIM: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) compared with moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) or with no exercise (CON) on vascular function in adults who were free of cardiometabolic diseases and those with cardiometabolic diseases.METHODS: A search across three electronic databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science was conducted through February 2022 to identify the randomized trials evaluating HIIT vs. MICT and/or CON on vascular function as measured using brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in adults. Separate analyses were conducted for HIIT vs. MICT and/or CON to calculate weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) using random or fixed models.RESULTS: A total of 36 studies involving 1,437 participants who were either free of cardiometabolic diseases or had cardiometabolic diseases were included in the meta-analysis. HIIT effectively increased FMD when compared with MICT [1.59% (95% CI 0.87-2.31),= 0.001] or CON [3.80% (95% CI 2.58-5.01),= 0.001]. Subgroup analysis showed that HIIT increased FMD in participants with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, but not in participants who were free of cardiometabolic diseases. In addition, HIIT effectively increased FMD regardless of age and body mass index.CONCLUSION: We confirm that HIIT is effective for improving vascular function in individuals with metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases and has a superior effect compared to MICT, demonstrating time efficiency.SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: [https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero], identifier [CRD42022320863].

High-intense interval training prevents cognitive impairment and increases the expression of muscle genes Fndc5 and Ppargc1a. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

PMID:  Curr Alzheimer Res. 2022 Dec 7. Epub 2022 Dec 7. PMID: 36503461 Abstract Title:  High-Intense Interval Training Prevents Cognitive Impairment And Increases The Expression Of Muscle Genes Fndc5 And Ppargc1a In A Rat Model Of Alzheimer's Disease. Abstract:  BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, characterized by the progressive loss of neuronal structure and function, whose main histopathological landmark is the accumulation of-amyloid in the brain.OBJECTIVE: It is well known that exercise is a neuroprotective factor and that muscles produce and release myokines that exert endocrine effects in inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Thus, this work intends to establish the relationship between the benefits of exercise through the chronic training of HIIT on cognitive damage induced by the Alzheimer's model by the injection ofamyloid 1-42.METHODS: For this purpose, forty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Sedentary Sham (SS), Trained Sham (ST), Sedentary Alzheimer's (AS), and Trained Alzheimer's (AT). Animals were submitted to stereotactic surgery and received a hippocampal injection of A1-42 or a saline solution. Seven days after surgery, twelve days of treadmill adaptation followed by five maximal running tests (MRT) and fifty-five days of HIIT, rats underwent the Morris water maze test. The animals were then euthanized, and their gastrocnemius muscle tissue was extracted to analyze the Fibronectin type III domain containing 5 (FNDC5), PPARG Coactivator 1 Alpha (PPARGC1A), and Integrin subunit beta 5 (ITGB5-R) expression by qRT-PCR in addition to cross-sectional areas.RESULTS: The HIIT prevents the cognitive deficit induced by the infusion of amyloid1-42 (p

Abstract:  Monserd-Vilar, A, Balsalobre-Fernndez, C, Hoffman, JR, Alix-Fages, C, and Jimnez, SL. Effects of concurrent resistance and endurance training using continuous or intermittent protocols on muscle hypertrophy: Systematic review with meta-analysis. J Strength Cond Res 37(3): 688-709, 2023-The purpose of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to explore the effects of concurrent resistance and endurance training (CT) incorporating continuous or intermittent endurance training (ET) on whole-muscle and type I and II muscle fiber hypertrophy compared with resistance training (RT) alone. Randomized and nonrandomized studies reporting changes in cross-sectional area at muscle fiber and whole-muscle levels after RT compared with CT were included. Searches for such studies were performed in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and CINAHL electronic databases. The data reported in the included studies were pooled in a random-effects meta-analysis of standardized mean differences (SMDs). Twenty-five studies were included. At the whole-muscle level, there were no significant differences for any comparison (SMD0.33) or combined with continuous ET (SMD>0.27), but not compared with CT incorporating only continuous ET (SMD

How to Grow Re-enchanted with the World: A Salve for the Sense of Existential Meaninglessness and Burnout

There are seasons of being when a cloak of meaninglessness seems to slip over you, over everything, muffling the song of life. It is not depression exactly, though the two conditions make eager bedfellows. Rather, it is a great hollowing that empties you of that vital force necessary for moving through the world wonder-smitten by reality, that glint of gladness at the mundane miracle of existence. A disenchantment we may call by many names burnout, apathy, alienation but one that visits upon every life in one form or another, at one time or another, pulsating with the unmet longing for something elemental and ancient, with the yearning to see the world as beautiful again and feel its magic, to find sanctuary in it, to contact that submerged sunrise of wonder.

Katherine May explores what it takes to shed the cloak of meaninglessness and recover the sparkle of vitality in Enchantment: Awakening Wonder in an Anxious Age (public library) a shimmering chronicle of her own quest for a better way t...

Why Is Every Walmart In The Entire City Of Portland Being Permanently Shut Down? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.

By the end of this month, there will be no more Walmart stores in Portland.  More than 641,000 people live within the city limits of Portland, so you would think that there should be a lot of money to be made there.

But Walmart has decided to wave the white flag.  Portland has been transformed into a complete and utter hellhole, and apparently, Walmart executives have determined that things are not going to turn around any time soon.  So they have announced that the last two Walmart stores in Portland that were still operational will be permanently shut down by the end of March

The last two Walmart stores within Portlands city limits will close in late March, the company announced.

The locations, at 1123 North Hayden Meadows Drive and at 4200 Southeast 82nd Avenue at the Eastport Plaza, will both close on Friday, March 24. Walmart says they are closing the stores because they were not meeting financial expectations.

A spokesperson for Walmart used very careful language to explain why these stores are being closed

The decision to close these stores was made after a careful review of their overall performance. We consider many factors, including current and projected financial performance, location, population, customer needs, and the proximity of other nearby stores when making these difficult decisions. After we decide to move forward, our focus is on our associates and their transition, which is the case here, a spokesperson with Walmart said.

Of course, this isnt exactly the truth.

But what do you expect Walmart to say?

Do you expect a corporate spokesperson to admit that Walmart is leaving Portland because it has become a drug-ridden, crime-infested hellhole?

One customer that was interviewed about the store closings addressed the real reason why Walmart is leaving

We gotta resolve the shoplifting one way or another, she added, addressing the topic of retail theft at the citys locations, because that is simply the problem. Its gotta stop.

At this point, much of Portland has been turned into a giant tent city for the homeless.

Trust, Betrayal, and the Nexus of Mathematics and Morality: The Prisoners Dilemma Animated "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Illuminating the pitfalls of the mind in felt and gingerbread.

Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present, Albert Camus wrote as he considered what it really means to be in solidarity with justice an elegantly phrased reminder that the decisions we make today are the only fulcrum by which we move the outcomes of tomorrow. And yet the greatest pitfall of human consciousness might be our habitual forgetting of this fundamental fact.

In 1950, two mathematicians working on game theory devised a cruelly brilliant thought experiment demonstrating just how poorly we manage to calibrate future outcomes for our own best interests, exposing a secret underground of consciousness where mathematics and morality converge. Known as The Prisoners Dilemma, it illuminates the complex dynamics that govern loyalty, betrayal, collaboration, and trust dynamics that play out in myriad subtle ways across our everyday lives.

The classic thought experiment comes alive with unexpected delight in this animated short film from TED-Ed by economist Lucas Husted and animators Ivana Bonjak and Thomas Johnson Volda:

Complement with philosopher Martha Nussbaum on the emotional machinery of trust and the only fruitful response to betrayal, then revisit other animated adaptations of classic thought experiments: The Ship of Theseus (exploring what makes you you), Platos Cave (exploring the central mystery of consciousness), Boltzmanns Brain Paradox (exploring whether reality is a hallucination), The Infinite Hotel Paradox (exploring the mind-bending nature of infinity), and Marys Room (exploring the limits of knowledge).

Reboot of The Proud Family Cartoon Dedicates an Episode to Autism Awareness

Proud Family reacts to BeBe's autism diagnosis

Photo: Screenshot from Twitter

The early 2000s animated series The Proud Family celebrated Blackness and represented Black families on screen. Airing on the Disney Channel, it also tackled serious subjects such as bullying, religion, and homelessness. Its new reboot The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is no different. One episode, in particular, has recently gained traction online for its representation of the autism spectrum and its candid conversation on autism diagnoses.

In the episode, the family becomes concerned with young BeBes lack of fear. They are recommended to see child psychologist Dr. Lord, who says that BeBe is showing signs of being on the autism spectrum. A short clip from the episode was shared on Twitter, where parents Oscar and Trudy first hear and respond to the diagnosis. Oscar has trouble understanding the diagnosis and accuses Dr. Lord of calling BeBe stupid. Oscar initially wants to leave, calling the psychologist a quack.

Eventually, Oscar sits to listen to Dr. Lord, who explains that her tests show BeBe is incredibly intelligent, curious, and fearless. She states, all an autism diagnosis means is Bebe will need a little extra effort and attention. Dr. Lord also adds needing support doesnt mean lack of ability, and emphasizes the importance of the family believing in BeBe, as well as teaching and helping him.

The clip ends with Trudy and Oscar saying goodbye to BeBe as they...

Hark, A Vagrant: Away From Desk "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Thank you for reading. I can't say it enough.

Hark! A Vagrant, such as it is, is an archive website now. I didn't think it would be when I stepped away to work on other projects, but (not to kill the light mood around here) 2016-2018 were very difficult years in a personal sense, and emerging on the other side, I feel like this is a project that has run its course. I am so very grateful for all that this comic and my readers have given me, they have given me a career, joy, and more than I ever dreamed.

I'm still working on a graphic novel, and picture books for children. I miss making humour comics, but coming back to them, I will have to figure out what that will look like. These comics go back to my early 20s, and I am a different person. In a sense that's exciting. I'll figure it out, and I hope I'll see you there. Hark! is only one project, I personally am not going anywhere. And maybe next time I'll choose a title that I won't have to repeat ten times to people, a bright prospect.

I'd like to dedicate this archive to my sister Becky Beaton, who we lost in 2018, and who always believed in me. I love you, always.

As it happens, boring Nelly and self absorbed Lockwood are really the last two people you would want as narrators. Sucks to be you, reader! I guess Heathcliff gives his perspective once, but mostly it's these two clowns and Isabella's letter from inside the madhouse.

As promised, here are the kid and baby items new to the store, for little Scholastic fans! Along with the plushes, I hope you find something for my littlest readers. Here is the link!

Hark, A Vagrant: Wuthering Heights pt 5 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The part of the book leading to Cathy's death is the most interesting, isn't it? I have read chapters over and over.

Here's a collection of essays, an old one but a good one, if you want to start somewhere in thinking about it: 20th Century Interpretations of Wuthering Heights. In all libraries, everywhere. It has in it, though you can just google it up too, Charlotte's 1850 preface to the book in defence of it but courting the morals of the time and explaining why it is so ...different. "Wuthering Heights: Sorry, Sorry, Just Give It A Chance OK?" Then go read all the essays deconstructing that. Then go down the deconstructing rabbit hole until you have no idea what you think anymore anyway. Then watch Netflix or something because your brain broke. Well that's how I do it.

Some people have sent me pictures of pretty great Princess Pinecone and Pony costumes for Halloween. Pumpkins too! I'm so delighted to get those. I treasure 'em, thank you!

We have new plushes (see I made a new button with my computer skills), and new kids shirts coming in to Topatoco soon as well! I haven't really mentioned this before, but stores in the real world can also pick up my things to put on the shelves, through our wholesale department. And I'd love to see more of that, I get asked about it a lot! Well it's no problem, just go HERE and thanks as always for stopping by!

More Wuthering to come!

Hark, A Vagrant: Wuthering Heights pt 4 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Here we are, back at Wuthering Heights after an extended leave. Heathcliff has come home and everyone is reasonable and I don't really see trouble brewing at all.

Thank you all who picked up King Baby!! I went on a book tour to schools and stores, and I loved all the little ones so much. I drew some comics about it: one
two
three
four

Hark, A Vagrant: King Baby "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Ahoy there! Allow me to write a bit here! But first, the image above speaks the truth. KING BABY is coming soon from Scholastic books, and Walker books in the UK! It is my second picture book, and its a lot of fun. I hope you'll pick it up!

Well, if you've been around here long enough, you know that this website just updates at random and at this point, not often like many comics you probably read online. I've been doing Hark! A Vagrant for almost nine years, which is crazy to me. And the longer I've done it, the longer it takes to make a comic. I know they look off the cuff, people reviewing my books make a point of saying so! But it's a lot of work for this gal, a full time job when it's going at a rate that you'd probably like to see. Lots of days reading and writing and trying to come up with things, lots of ideas you've spent days on thrown in the garbage can. And when you're done, another blank page.

Hark! is always in the back of my head when I'm working on anything else, and I find myself wracked with guilt for not keeping the updates coming, I have one foot here and one foot there. This push and pull, I have to accept, makes anything I'm working on suffer. And I've been trying to figure out a solution to this! Something better than slow work all around. Because if I'm honest, I'm scared that if I leave this site alone too long, I'll lose something very precious to me.

You.

I've worked a long time to bring you here, and you've been good to come here and read my comics and support my work. I feel that we have built a relationship, my readers and I, it's very important to me, and I never want to put it in peril. So what to do?

Right now I'm working on a tv show pitch, kids book ideas, and my own graphic novel. I don't know what will come together in the end for the first two, and I've been down the tv road before, it's a lot of time for something that might not happen and that you can't really talk about (sorry!). But maybe it will work out! You have to try right?

But the main thing is the graphic novel, which is a memoir...

We'll get back to Mary Anning later. Is Kelis' milkshake song a gift to humanity, or what?

Hark, A Vagrant: Cloak and Dagger "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I had a lot of fun with this on twitter, so I just kept on going with it. But you know, I'm always kind of touched by how strongly fans support their favourite characters, and there is a lot of love for Cloak and Dagger, and you can see why because there are some pretty great things about that pair. But that costume, come on, it's a big old slice of tit window pie. They don't always dress Dagger like that, but yeah they mostly do! But they probably won't on the tv show!

I didn't dwell on Cloak very much in a comic about tit windows, but, here's something. I tweeted this essay a while ago when I read it, but Cloak's lack of a body really brought it to mind again, and you should totally read it, though mostly it is about the character Cyborg, it is relevant here too:

Humanity Not Included: DC's Cyborg and the Mechanization of the Black Body by Robert Jones, Jr.

Hark, A Vagrant: Peasants #3 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I wouldn't say these two follow the rules of medieval society exactly, but they are my favourite pair of dirty peasants. And at least in reality they would have lived in a time without the cursed plague of KEEP CALM. A better time.

Today's book recommendation is Ian Mortimer's classic The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England. It's so good! And if you think you don't like reading history, this one will make you think again, it's so entertaining and engaging.

Hark, A Vagrant: Karl Heinrich Ulrichs "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Here is a comic about a man I admire very much! Karl Heinrich Ulrichs was an early champion of LGBT rights, and maybe the first person to speak publicly for them as he did in Munich in 1867. The last picture there is the place where he spoke. He used the word "Urning" for gay men, a term he coined, because even the word "homosexual" wasn't invented yet (it would be soon after). I only found out about him last fall, which is surprising and also sadly not surprising. But he was really amazing, I'm sure you will agree.

Hark! A Vagrant is a strange mix, sometimes the comics are straight jokes and sometimes, like here, I just want to talk about someone I think is great in a way that's easy to pick up on - comics are great for that! And I tell you what, I got so much out of this particular collection, of all the things I read. Here is a link:

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs:
Urning Pride and the First Known Gay Activist

Translated and Edited by Michael Lombardi-Nash, PhD

The document is a mix of things, essays and Karl's own writings and I think you will like it very much. I'm going to leave you with the epitaph on the stone his friends put up for him, he had many friends and admirers. It reads like a little affectionate biography.

Karl Henrich Ulrichs
who was born in Westerfeld near East Friesland
He distinguished himself and became renowned among
his equals by his mental faculties in the humanities and other disciplines
through instruction he received in Gottingen and Berlin.
He was concerned about new problems in anthropology and jurisprudence.
He had a remarkable sense of duty.
He was not elevated to prosperity nor was he humbled
by the attacks from his adversaries.
As a pauper he left the region of Hanover and went into exile.
He traveled through a great part of Europe.
He displayed everywhere a model character by his knowledge and virtue.
Finally he came to live in Aquila in central Italy to live for a long time.
He edited a Latin journal titled "Alaudae...

Hark, A Vagrant: Joan of Arc "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Hello! It's been a while.

If you're a fan of Joan of Arc (and I mean, who isn't? Who has ever been like her before or since?) you should definitely look up the 1928 movie, The Passion of Joan of Arc. Maria Falconetti as Joan gives what is widely regarded as one of the best performances on film, ever - though certainly at a cost. Mesmerizing.

Hey, ponies are back in stock! They were out for a while, but they are back! woop woop woop!
