Here's Why Big Pharma Spends More On Ads Pushing Lower Benefit Drugs "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Big pharma spends more money on advertising for drugs that have lower health benefits for patients, according to a study published in JAMA on Tuesday, shedding new light on the almost uniquely American practice amid fierce debate over whether direct-to-consumer prescription drug ads should be banned. The proportion of advertising spending allocated to direct-to-consumer ads was an average of 14.3 percentage points higher for drugs with a low added benefit compared to those with a high added benefit, according to the peer-reviewed analysis of the 150 best-selling branded prescription drugs. Manufacturers of the top six best-selling drugs spent the bulk of their promotional budgetsmore than 90%targeting consumers directly rather than clinicians for a range of treatment options for conditions including HIV, multiple sclerosis and numerous cancers. The findings could suggest pharma firms are aiming promotional dollars directly towards consumers ... as part of a "strategy to drive patient demand for drugs that clinicians would be less likely to prescribe," said the study's lead author Michael DiStefano. Just two countries in the world allow drug makers to market prescription medications directly to consumers: the U.S. and New Zealand. Most countries prohibit directly advertising prescription medications to the public, something the WHO says influences both people and, indirectly, the medical professionals treating them, making it "harder to make decisions on evidence based medicine."

'Patient influencers' paid by Big Pharma to mislead followers: report "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

There's no better way to reach an audience today than through social media and Big Pharma is well aware of that. The video-sharing platform TikTok, for example, is being flooded with videos of users testifying to wellness through prescription drugs, with hashtags like #adhd (22.3B views), #ozempic (675.1M views) and #wegovy (259.3M views) consistently trending. Now, experts are warning about this misleading tactic by drugmakers, in paying popular social media users to espouse their products under the guise of honest reviews, in a new study published this week in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. These so-called patient influencers, or patient "advocates," are social media influencers who use their platform to promote pharmaceutical medications and/or medical devices. Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder analyzed 26 recent interviews with patient influencers, who had been diagnosed with conditions such as lupus, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease, asthma, HIV, celiac disease, chronic migraines and perimenopause. The majority (69%) had previously collaborated with a pharmaceutical company in some way. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that influencers must disclose if they have been paid by using hashtags, such as by adding #ad or #sponsored to related posts, while the Food and Drug Administration has rules and regulations regarding what can be said on social posts. Nevertheless, many consumers fail to decipher a sponsored ad from genuine peer-to-peer advice.

Psychoactive Drugs Often Linked to Mass Shootings "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

We urgently need a national debate about guns. But we also urgently need a national debate about the epidemic of mood-altering drugs being prescribed to young Americans. Mass shooters in the United States tend to be young, obsessive, male loners and many have been prescribed psychoactive drugs. For example, Eric Harris, one of the two shooters at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, in 1999which ushered in the current spate of mass shootingswas on the psychotropic drug Luvox. Prescribing information for the antidepressant says, "Close supervision of patients and in particular those at high risk should accompany drug therapy." Jeff Weise, who fatally shot his grandfather, his grandfather's girlfriend, and then seven others at the Red Lake Senior High School in Minnesota in 2005, was on the well-known antidepressant Prozac. Two years later, Cho Seung-Hui, who perpetrated the Virginia Tech mass shooting, also was found to be on psychoactive antidepressants. Jeanne Stolzer, associate professor of child and adolescent development at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, observes that "despite the multitude of international drug regulatory warnings on all classifications of psychiatric medications citing adverse reactions such as suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, violence, and psychosis, not one local, state, or federal commission has investigated the correlation between the mass shootings in America and the use of psychiatric medications."

Note: Although Epoch Times is often deemed as a controversial media platform, this article raises legitimate questions on an important topic seldom discussed. Read a revealing article that investigates the alarming adverse events associated with common mood-altering medications prescribed for those struggling with mental illness. For more on this concerning trend, consider exploring an in-depth article written by an anonymous doctor who reveals the decades of evidence showing how adverse reactions from psychiatric drugs can manifest as both suicides and homicides.

Do COVID-19 vaccine mandates still make sense? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Visitors to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington, D.C. ... must show a guard proof that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Such demands were common around the world a year ago. But by now, almost everyone has had natural infections with SARS-CoV-2 or been vaccinated against the coronavirussometimes bothand it's become clear that vaccine-induced immunity quickly loses its ability to prevent infection and spread of the latest variants. Some now say the mandates are outdated. The persistent requirements are "baffling to say the least," says Heidi Larson, an anthropologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and director of the Vaccine Confidence Project. She spoke at a major infectious disease meeting this year that required all attendees to show they had had two doses of a vaccinewith no need for a recent booster. "It's not like it's going to mitigate the spread." Larson and other vaccine acceptance researchers who spoke to Science all emphasize that COVID-19 vaccines clearly prevent severe disease, but they worry maintaining the mandates could undermine future public health efforts. "Having to show these old vaccination proofs or certificates really doesn't make sense, and it could cause harm, because people might lose trust in the competence of the organization," says University of Konstanz psychologist Katrin Schmelz. Compared with Europe and Asia, the United States appears to be holding on to vaccine mandates more tightly.

Note: Many people are questioning the legitimacy of vaccine mandates, regardless of their stance on the efficacy and safety of the COVID vaccines. Immunity acquired from a Covid infection is as protective as vaccination against severe illness and death, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Immunity acquired from a Covid infection provides strong, lasting protection against the most severe outcomes of the illness, according to research published Thursday in The Lancet protection, experts say, that's on par with what's provided through two doses of an mRNA vaccine. Infection-acquired immunity cut the risk of hospitalization and death from a Covid reinfection by 88% for at least 10 months, the study found. "This is really good news, in the sense that protection against severe disease and death after infection is really quite sustained at 10 months," said the senior study author, Dr. Christopher Murray ... at the University of Washington. The study was the largest meta-analysis to date to look at immunity following infection. It included 65 studies from 19 countries and compared the risk of developing Covid again in people who had recovered from infections to people who hadn't been infected through September. The immunity generated from an infection was found to be "at least as high, if not higher" than that provided by two doses of an mRNA vaccine, the authors wrote. While Murray and Wachter agreed that vaccination remains the safest route, having a past Covid infection should at least be considered in policymaking decisions going forward, such as vaccination requirements, they said. "What Europe did with this evidence made a lot of sense, which is where evidence of past infection was seen as essentially equal to vaccination in terms of requirements to go into events or for employment," Murray said.

Note: It's worthy of mentioning that much of the media previously dismissed the effectiveness of natural immunity to protect against COVID, with mainstream media platforms blatantly claiming that natural immunity is "not panning out" and "comes at a cost." Japan says 1.5m people are living as recluses after Covid "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Almost 1.5 million people of working age in Japan are living as social recluses, according to a government survey, with about a fifth of cases attributed to the pressures unleashed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Large numbers of hikikomori said they had begun retreating from mainstream society due to relationship issues and after losing or leaving their jobs. A significant proportion 20.6% said their predicament had been triggered by changes in lifestyle imposed during the pandemic. Hikikomori classed as people who withdraw from society, spending all or almost all of their time isolated at home account for 2% of people aged 15-62. The cabinet office surveyed 30,000 people between the ages of 10 and 69. The poll found that just over a fifth of respondents aged 15-39 had been socially isolated. More than 20% said they had experienced problems with interpersonal relationships, while just over 18% cited the pandemic. Among people in the 40-64 age range, 44.5% said their behaviour had been triggered by leaving their jobs, followed by 20.6% who cited the pandemic. Japan did not enforce UK-style lockdowns to help contain the spread of the virus, but people were asked to avoid unnecessary outings ... and some employers and universities encouraged teleworking and remote learning. On streets that would normally have been teeming with people there was a dramatic drop in footfall after restaurants, bars and other sectors of the nighttime economy were asked to stop serving alcohol and close early, or face fines.

South Korea to give $490 allowance to reclusive youths to help them leave the house "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

South Korea is to offer reclusive youths a monthly living allowance of 650,000 won ($490) in order to encourage them out of their homes, as part of a new measure passed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The measure also offers education, job and health support. The condition is known as "hikikomori", a Japanese term that roughly translated means, "to pull back". The government wants to try to make it easier for those experiencing it to leave the house to go to school, university or work. Included in the programme ... is a monthly allowance for living expenses for people aged between nine and 24 who are experiencing extreme social withdrawal. It also includes an allowance for cultural experiences for teenagers. About 350,000 people between the ages of 19 and 39 in South Korea are considered lonely or isolated about 3% of that age group according to the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Secluded youth are often from disadvantaged backgrounds and 40% began living reclusively while adolescents, according to a government document outlining the measures. The document includes case studies that describe young people using reclusiveness as a way to cope. One young person describes their depression as a result of domestic violence. "When I was 15 years old, domestic violence made me depressed so much that I began to live in seclusion." Another said that they had become a recluse when their family "went bankrupt".

Note: A deeper perspective on this social crisis is how lockdown policies significantly deteriorated youth mental health during the lockdown, as seen in a new University of Cambridge paper. This paper is the first longitudinal study to trace the mental health effects of lockdowns and social isolation on younger children. The Most Dangerous International Treaty Ever Proposed "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Two international legal agreements [are] currently working their way through the World Health Organisation: a new pandemic treaty, and amendments to the 2005 International Health Regulations, both due to be put before the governing body of the WHO, the World Health Assembly, in May next year. As concerned scholars and jurists have detailed, these agreements threaten to fundamentally reshape the relationship between the WHO, national governments, and individuals. They would hardwire into international law a top-down supranational approach to public health in which the WHO, acting in some cases via the sole discretion of one individual, its Director General (DG), would be empowered to impose sweeping, legally binding directions on member states and their citizens. A global system for digital 'health certificates' for verification of vaccine status or test results would be routinised, and a bio-surveillance network ... would be embedded and expanded. The WHO has fallen largely under the control of private capital and other vested interests. Over 80 percent of the WHO's budget is now 'specified' funding by way of voluntary contributions typically earmarked for specific projects or diseases in a way that the funder specifies. The WHO [is] ordaining itself as the exclusive global controller not just of the identification of pandemics and potential pandemics but of the design and execution of pandemic responses, while also granting itself a vast health surveillance network and a global workforce.

Scientific Paper on Children, Wireless Technology, and Health Effects by Renowned Experts in Environmental Health "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A state-of-the-art assessment on the scientific evidence of wireless radiation impacts on children's health published in the journal Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care concludes that the medical community has a critical role to play to prevent harm from wireless radiation. Written by distinguished experts in medicine, epidemiology, toxicology, physics, biochemical engineering and public health ... the paper references numerous studies that associate wireless exposure to effects including oxidative stress, DNA damage, cardiomyopathy, carcinogenicity, sperm damage, memory damage and neurological effects. Pregnancy, infancy and childhood are periods of critical susceptibility, especially for the brain, which is rapidly developing. "Current government safety limits are outdated and do not reflect the latest science nor the way children use wireless technology today," stated Linda Birnbaum Ph.D, former Director of the National Toxicology Program. Theodora Scarato, Executive Director of Environmental Health Trust, highlighted the international policies to reduce children's exposure, such as France and Belgium's bans on the sale of cell phones designed for young children and the numerous countries that have restrictions on Wi-Fi exposure in classrooms. She stated that, "US government limits allow radiation emissions 10 to 100 times higher than numerous countries such as Switzerland, Italy, China, Russia and India."

The Pesticide Industry's Playbook for Poisoning the Earth "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In 2013, the European Union called for a temporary suspension of the most commonly used neonicotinoid-based products on flowering plants, citing the danger posed to bees an effort that resulted in a permanent ban in 2018. In the U.S., however, industry dug in, seeking not only to discredit the research but to cast pesticide companies as a solution to the problem. Lobbying documents and emails ... show a sophisticated effort over the last decade by the pesticide industry to obstruct any effort to restrict the use of neonicotinoids. Bayer and Syngenta, the largest manufacturers of neonics, and Monsanto, one of the leading producers of seeds pretreated with neonics, cultivated ties with prominent academics ... and other scientists who had once called for a greater focus on the threat posed by pesticides. A study published in peer-reviewed journal PLOS One found that the American landscape has become 48 times more toxic to insects since the 1990s, a shift largely fueled by the rising application of neonics. "Generally, we see the U.S. waiting longer than the EU to take action on a variety of pesticides and other chemicals," said [Willa] Childress ... with Pesticide Action Network North America. Part of the divergence, Childress continued, stems from a regulatory system in the U.S. that assumes chemical products are generally safe until proven hazardous. In contrast, the EU tends to use the "precautionary principle," removing products that may cause harm.

The trauma doctor: Gabor Mat on happiness, hope and how to heal our deepest wounds "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

[Gabor] Mat was born in January 1944; in May of that year, the deportation of Hungary's Jews to Auschwitz began. By the end of the Holocaust, 565,000 Hungarian Jews had been murdered, Mat's maternal grandparents among them. When he was 11 months old, his mother sent him with a stranger to be cared for by his aunt. Mat says trauma, from the Greek for "wound", "is not what happens to you; it is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you. It is not the blow on the head, but the concussion I get." That, he says, is the good news. "If my trauma was that my mother gave me to a stranger ... that will never not have happened. But if the wound was that I decided as a result that I wasn't worthwhile as a human being, I wasn't lovable, that's a wound that can heal at any time." There can be two types of wound, he says. "There's the capital-T traumatic events," which include things like being abused as a child and the loss of a parent. Then there are "small-T traumas". "You can wound a kid not only by doing bad things to them, but by also not meeting their needs," he says. Mat has a heightened level of compassion. For him, the real villain is our culture. Many of the plights of modern society are, he says, natural responses to an unhealthy culture. Take addiction. His view is that there is no such thing as an "addictive personality". Nor is addiction a disease. His mantra is: "Don't ask why the addiction, ask why the pain. Addiction is a normal response to trauma."

Note: The Wisdom of Trauma is a powerful film that travels alongside Dr. Gabor Mat in his quest to discover the connection between illness, addiction, trauma, and society. Deeply touching and captivating in its diverse portrayal of real human stories, the film also provides a new vision of a trauma-informed society that seeks to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul. What Everyone Should Know About the Brain's Ability to Heal "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Our brains are made up of billions of cells that work together to create our every ability. Wipe out those cells, through a stroke or other brain trauma, and you may no longer be able to read, but you might still be able to speak, sing or write. It's all about where the brain is damaged which systems of cells are traumatized and which are not. The three-pound mass of neurological tissue that we call the brain has the power not only to create every ability we have but also to manifest our perception of reality. Our brains have a two-pronged defense mechanism that kicks in when brain trauma occurs. Not only are we able to grow some new neurons a process called neurogenesis especially in the sites where physical trauma has occurred, our brain cells are capable of neuroplasticity, which means they can rearrange which other neurons they are in communication with. That's why, whenever I meet someone who has experienced a brain trauma of any sort, I don't focus on what abilities that person has lost, but rather I marvel at what insights that person might have gained because of the experience. Few things have greater impact on how people choose to live their lives than neurological trauma or near-death experiences. And when we find ourselves to be neurologically impaired, we become vulnerable and need others to support us rather than criticize or judge us. I became a much more compassionate and empathetic person following my stroke and recovery. Perhaps I am not the only one.

Mindfulness better than CBT for treating depression, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Practising mindfulness is much better than taking part in talking therapies at helping people recover from depression, a British study has found. People who used a mindfulness self-help book for eight weeks and had six sessions with a counsellor experienced a 17.5% greater improvement in recovery from depressive symptoms than those who underwent cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) while being supported by a mental health practitioner. Their results have been published in JAMA Psychiatry. The NHS says mindfulness involves people paying attention to "what is going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment" and "the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the present moment" as well as being aware of their thoughts and feelings as they happen. People using mindfulness in the LIGHTMind 2 trial spent eight weeks following the advice in The Mindful Way Workbook, which helps them build up their mindfulness skills by guiding them on what they should do every day in order to be aware of their thoughts, feelings and physical sensations in a non-judgmental way. Doing that helps people address some of the behaviours that can maintain feelings of depression. They also had six one-to-one half-hour "support sessions" on the telephone with a therapist discussing their progress, experience of practising mindfulness and asking questions. Mindfulness-based treatment is also a cheaper way of tackling depression because people using it needed on average 526 less of subsequent treatment.

Pentagon Tries to Cast Bank Runs as National Security Threat "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In recent months, the Pentagon has moved to provide loans, guarantees, and other financial instruments to technology companies it considers crucial to national security a step beyond the grants and contracts it normally employs. So when Silicon Valley Bank threatened to fail in March following a bank run, the defense agency advocated for government intervention to insure the investments. The Pentagon had even scrambled to prepare multiple plans to get cash to affected companies if necessary, reporting by Defense One revealed. Their interest in Silicon Valley Bank stems from the Pentagon's brand-new office, the Office of Strategic Capital. The secretary of defense established the OSC in December specifically to counteract the investment power of adversaries like China in U.S. technologies, and to secure separate funding for companies whose products are considered vital to national security. The national security argument for bailout, notably, found an influential friend in the Senate. As the Biden administration intervened to protect Silicon Valley Bank depositors on March 12, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who chairs the powerful Senate Intelligence Committee and also sits on the Banking Committee, issued a press release warning that the bank run posed a national security risk. Warner the only member of Congress to have publicly tied SVB to national security has received significant contributions from the financial sector. Since 2012, Warner has received over $21,000 from Silicon Valley Bank's super PAC.

Unchained Announces $60M Series B Fundraising Round "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Funding led by Valor Equity Partners and other existing investors will go towards the firms expansion and improvement.

Unchained, a financial services provider for Bitcoin holders, has announced that it has raised $60 million in its Series B funding round. The funding was led by Valor Equity Partners and included participation from existing investors such as NYDIG, Trammell Venture Partners, Ecliptic Capital and Highland Capital Partners. According to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, funding will be used to expand Unchaineds client base and improve its suite of financial services.

Unchaineds collaborative custody model aims to use Bitcoins native multisignature capabilities to provide the benefits of self-custody while mitigating risks associated with self-custody. The model allows clients to share control of their Bitcoin between private keys they hold themselves and private keys held by Unchained and other financial services companies. The platform currently secures over $2 billion in Bitcoin across thousands of keys worldwide, according to the press release.

Vivek Pattipati, a Partner at Valor who will be joining Unchaineds Board of Directors, described Unchaineds current position, saying that in the midst of market chaos, Unchained has emerged as a highly trusted provider of Bitcoin custody and financial services through superior technology, risk management, regulatory compliance, and client service.

The company has originated over $500 million in Bitcoin-collateralized loans since 2017, the press release states, while experiencing zero loan losses. The Unchained trading desk allows clients to buy Bitcoin directly to cold storage, and its IRA offering allows clients to hold keys to their Bitcoin within tax-advantaged retirement accounts, which the release notes is an industry-first.

Unchained feels that as Bitcoin continues to grow in adoption, there is a tremendous opportunity for products that bridge into the traditional dollar ecosystem around credit, trading, investment, and other financial services. Using this fresh capital investment to expand our reach and suite of services, we hope to enable new entrants to Bitcoin to leapfrog centralized custodians into our safer collaborative custody model, said Unchained CEO Joe Kelly.

Watch a Trumpeter Play Fire in a Classic Physics Experiments That Lets Us See Sound "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Watch a Trumpeter Play Fire in a Classic Physics Experiments That Lets Us See Sound

Ruben's Tube Experiment

Photo: Screenshot from Reddit

Its not often we get to see sound. Perhaps we occasionally notice the digital waves in a voice recording, but watching sound happenespecially in real lifeis a rarity. One classic physics experiment, however, allows us to do just that. Called Rubens Tube, or a standing wave flame tube, it displays the relationship between sound waves and sound pressure. A viral post on Reddit demonstrates what this looks like in practice using a Rubens Tube powered by a trumpet. The mesmerizing result is a spectacular display of scientific principles.

The physics experiment was created by German physicist Heinrich Rubens in 1905. The setup involves a piece of pipe that has holes drilled along its top and is sealed on either end. One end is a propane tank (or other supply of flammable gas) and the other is the source of the sound. The pipe is then lit and a standing flame appears. When a sound is madein this case, the trumpet playsthe oscillating pressure of the sound waves lets gas escape and shapes the sound curve.

The trumpet player shows how quickly sound waves change, and how the various notes in his tune play a role in manipulating the flame. Its a reminder that even the smallest things in our world are incredible when you stop to consider the physics of it all.

Scroll down to see the trumpet Rubens Tube video that has gone viral as well as more videos featuring the experiment.

An Unwitting Consumer Finds Himself Out of His Depth in the Stop-Motion Animation Five Cents "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Stumbling upon a coin purse, a lone consumer finds himself in possession of a bit of extra change in the stop-motion animation Five Cents. Aaron Hughes created the film by using thousands of market analysis pages from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times, on top of which he applied layers of ink, Wite-Out, gold leaf, and gouache. A symbolic and witty criticism of capitalist society and how economic mechanisms like inflation impact the everyday cost of living, Hughes solitary character purchases essentials like glasses and an umbrella before being hoodwinked into unnecessary purchases.

Five Cents won the 2022 South by Southwest Animated Short Audience Award, and you can see more of Hughes work on Vimeo.

This bosss message to staff worried about their income had people hollering into next week "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Raise a Standard for Others by Improving Yourself "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

This article was originally published by Dan Sanchez at the Foundation for Economic Education.

The individual is the only one who can attend to the degree and the perfection of his own variability. Others cannot in a creative sense, do anything to him. If they would help, they must limit themselves to what they can do for him. For him, they can do little beyond attending to their own emergencematerially, intellectually, spiritually. They can, by precept and example, set a standard to which he can repair. They can have goods and services to exchange, or knowledge and insight to offer. But whether or not he takes advantage of their offerings is a matter for his own election. No one else can decide. Leonard E. Read, Why Not Try Freedom? (1958)

The best way to improve others is to focus on improving yourself. The better you become, the more you will inspire others to emulate your conduct and hearken to your words. Individuals will voluntarily follow your standard.

The word standard in this context is derived from the military flags that would be raised above the dust and smoke of battle to visibly mark the location of the field leader and thus create a rallying point for the troops.

This is an apt metaphor for life in general. Everyone sometimes feels aimless and lost in the fray of the day. At such times, we look for leaders to emulate and teachers to learn from. We especially seek out individuals who evince mastery: exemplars who clearly know what theyre doing and what theyre talking about.

And the best way to manifest mastery is not to proclaim it but to attain it. The more you cultivate yourself, the more you will naturally radiate evidence of mastery. That evidence will be a shining standard that others will look to for direction and encouragement. That is how true leadership and education work.

The opposite approach is to prowl around the battlefield of life trying to dragoon unwilling followers and studentshectoring them about where to go, how to behave, and what to think. But such a futile endeavor will cause you to neglect your own participation in the struggle, making it more likely that you yourself will fail and that your standard will fall in the mud. Then you wont be able to truly lead or teach anyone.

There is a crucial difference between leading and driving, between education and indoctrination. Leaders of free men and women are not drivers of cattle or conscripts. And teachers of free minds are not inculcators of mindles...

How Anita Posch Brings Financial Education To The World: Bitcoin Gives Them A Choice "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Podcaster and non-profit educator Anita Posch discusses her mission to travel the world and bring Bitcoin to those who need it most.

As an American who grew up in the South, I am ashamed of the lack of financial knowledge I had as a young adult. Bitcoin made zero sense to me until I understood the history of money and what it means to have a peer-to-peer, apolitical, monetary system. This knowledge has opened my mind to the many things that Bitcoin can accomplish in regards to elevating human rights around the world.

Every single day, more human rights violations are reported in the media. From the Rohingya genocide to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a thousand more in between. The world we live in is corrupted by greed and those who misuse their power. Oftentimes, the power hungry use fiat currency as a means of control. That being said, Bitcoins case for improving human rights is the number one reason why I care about Bitcoin.

Enter Anita Posch: Podcast host,, author, non-profit founder and Bitcoin educator. Posch has a background of more than 20 years in web design and online entrepreneurship, and has made it her lifes mission to educate people who need Bitcoin the most. She has been on the ground working tirelessly, emphasizing the need for everyone, specifically women, to take control of their financial literacy through Bitcoin education and entrepreneurship.

Im confident you will be inspired as you read her responses to my questions about how she is using Bitcoin education to empower more people around the world.

How did you first learn about Bitcoin and what specifically drew you to it?

The first time I heard about Bitcoin was in 2011, I tweeted about it, but didn't really get into it, because I read an article and concluded that it's just another PayPal.

Well, it must have been a bad article.

In April 2017 I heard a talk at a conference about Bitcoin and open blockchains and their future impact on society and technology. This time, I was open and ready to learn something new. I had been an online entrepreneur and web designer for 20 years and was looking for new interesting topics as a basis for my work. I immediately understood that an uncensorable, collaborative, permissionless and open protocol to send value is a tool that can provide a level playing field for anyone globally....

Instead of settling for a plain design, investing in something a little more special can add instant flair to your outfit. My Modern Met Store has added several new reusable tote bags that are sure to become workhorses in your routine.

Similarly, the Flower Pattern Tote Bag is based on Van Gogh's paintings of bouquets and other fresh blooms.

Meanwhile, the Saguaro Bag includes one of Wright's designs for stained glass windows.

Is This Dad Wrong For Wanting His Daughter To Disclose Her Choice Of College? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Choosing where to attend college is a personal decision, and one that almost no one takes lightly. Parents who are invested in their childs future and are able to make it work plan and go on tours alongside them, probably worrying about money but not as much as they worry about their kiddo leaving the nest.

OP and his wife were no different, attending tours with their daughter on more than on occasion as she narrowed down her choices and then went on a few more visits just to be sure.

So today, my (55M) am returning with my daughter (17F) from a final college visit. We flew. Yesterday, after the visit, we were having lunch and she said shed made up her mind. I asked which school. She said shes going to have fun with this and not tell us. I texted my wife and said she had a decision but she wasnt telling us.

My wifes comment was weve spent a great deal of money with trips, airline fare, hotels, meals, etc. for all of this. We visited multiple schools last spring and after she was accepted at five, she narrowed them down to three, which weve now visited.

After her last round of visits, his daughter said she had made a decisionbut she didnt want to share it, just because it was fun keeping a secret.

Today at the airport during the layover she said she thinks its fun she got on our nerves about this and doesnt plan on telling us until maybe the end of the week.

OP said he didnt think that was going to work long term, since he needed to know how much money he would need, have time to move it around so he could access it, be aware of the particular schools deadlines, etc.

I explain that I dont think thats going to fly as Im trying to plan on where Im moving money around for the down payment, etc. we are paying for her undergrad and mayb...

A professor found her name on an article she didnt write. Then it got worse "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Anca Turcu

Anca Turcu was going over her publication stats a few weeks ago, as she does every year to apply for research awards and update her CV, when she found an unpleasant surprise.

Turcu, a senior lecturer in the University of Central Floridas School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs, was listed as the sole author of an article entitled Impact of government intervention measures on recycling of waste equipment in China, which had been published in the African Journal of Political Science in February 2022.

She hadnt written the paper, which had nothing to do with her research on diasporas and voting. But that wasnt the worst of it.

As Retraction Watch looked into the case, we found something very upsetting, in Turcus words. The article with her name on it appeared to paraphrase, sentence by sentence, a paper that had been published in another journal a few months prior.

Not only are they faking a publication in my name, but they are adding my name to something they have plagiarized? Turcu asked. This is absolutely terrible! What is it with these people?

The earlier articles title was nearly identical, and it had appeared online in the Elsevier journal Energy Policy in November 2021. It has been cited ten times since, according to Clarivates Web of Science. The one with Turcus name on it was received at the journal in January 2022.

We emailed the authors of the Energy Policy paper, who are affiliated with Tongji University in Shanghai, to ask if they were aware of the plagiarism, but they didnt reply. We also emailed Stephen D. Thomas, senior and coordinating editor of the journal and a professor at the University of Greenwich in London, and got an out of office response.

How to Paint Like Yayoi Kusama, the Avant-Garde Japanese Artist "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

When Yayoi Kusama first arrived in New York, in the late nineteen-fifties, she must have sensed that she was in a practically ideal time and place to make abstract art. That would explain why she subsequently began creating a series of large paintings we now know as Infinity Nets, all of which consist solely of patterns of polka dots or at least what look like patterns, and what look like polka dots, when viewed from a distance. Up close, theres something quite different going on, something altogether more organic, irregular, and ever-shifting. and the best method of understanding it is to pick up a brush and paint an infinity net of your own.

You can learn how to do that by watching the video above, which comes from Coursera and the Museum of Modern Arts online course In the Studio: Postwar Abstract Painting. In it, painter Corey DAugustine goes through all the steps of executing a finished canvas in the style of Kusamas Infinity Nets, which requires little conventional technical skill, but a great deal of patience.

Should Parents Have An Equal Say In Big-Ticket Gifts? Father Asks If His PS5 Gift Was Too Much. "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Navigating life as co-parenting adults can be tricky whether or not the two of you are on good terms. That said, once youre divorced it can be particularly grating to realize that you still have to consider opinions at least when it comes to your child from a person youd rather not have to speak to ever again.

OP is in that sort of co-parenting situation for his 14yo daughter. His ex has other children and they have 50/50 custody.

My ex and I have a 14yo daughter together. she also has 2 more kids who are 16M and 11F.

we have 50-50 custody

here is the problem

Recently, OP had told his daughter he was going to buy her a PS5 as a reward for acing a test, but her mother called and explicitly said she didnt want her to have it. Her reasons were that she was gloating in front of her step-siblings, who didnt have as many nice things as their daughter.

my daughter loves gaming. she has been begging her mom and I to buy her a ps5. I bought one for her a few weeks ago but I didnt give it to her right away. I decided to wait until after an important and difficult exam that she had and give it to her as a prize for getting an A+ in that exam (which I knew she would).

a few days ago my ex called me and asked me not to buy a ps5 for my daughter as apparently she has been gloating to her siblings and making them jealous because their parents are financially struggling and they cant have as many privileges as my daughter. my ex gave me a long lecture about how she doesnt deserve another privilege because of her behavior. I told her I will consider it but I didnt promise anything.

7 Instant Foods for Your On-the-Go Emergency Supply "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Author of What to Eat When Youre Broke and Bloom Where Youre Planted online course

Here on The Organic Prepper, most of us are fans of healthy food. But sometimes, you just need to keep yourself fed while on the move. As I travel, there are a few instant foods that I regularly use when going from one place to the next. These food items are also great for including in your bug-out bag or your at-work emergency bag.

You can run the gamut with these items, from clean and organic to the least expensive ones on the market. It all depends on your situation and your requirements.

As always, I must share this disclaimer: not all suggestions will work for all readers. If you are on a special diet, some of these foods may not be for you. This does not render the entire list useless for others.

Without further ado, here are the foods I always keep in my emergency stash for a quick meal when away from home. You can mix and match these to create a meal with some protein and some carbs. Some require boiling water, and others do not. All of these items can easily be found at just about any grocery store. While there are many fantastic options you can buy that are just for preppers or the military, they often cost a whole lot more and are not as quickly available as the items suggested here.

Instant oatmeal

I have eaten instant oatmeal since I was a kid. Sure, the slow-cooked, steel-cut oats with creamy fresh milk and maple syrup taste better. But Ive spent many a morning at a new Airbnb or hotel room dining on Quaker Maple Brown Sugar and a peanut butter sandwich.

You can get instant oatmeal in many different flavors the choice is up to you. You may also want to dress it up with your nuts or trail mix, or add some apple sauce to it. You can go with the classic Quaker (or the generic version) or you can get a better quality brand like Natures Path or Better Oats. There are also high-protein oatmeal packets available out there in oatmeal-land that will give you a more powerful start to your day.

Peanut butter packs

I love PB right out of the package, and if you do too, youll enjoy having this addition of healthy fats and protein in your bag. You can get little tubs of peanut butter that are great for dipping, or you can also grab tubes of it that range anywhere from Skippy to Justins. (This honey-almond butter is also delish!)

"IndyWatch Feed Arts" "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Nominees of the 1999 MTV Movie Awards included Adam Sandler, Liv Tyler, Chris Tucker, and Jennifer Love Hewitt to mention just a few of the names in a veritable whos-who of turn-of-the-millennium American pop culture. But for the teenage cinephiles watching that night, the highlight of the broadcast was surely a set of brief skits performed by the Max Fischer Players. Directed by Wes Anderson, who had been named Best New Filmmaker during the ceremony of three years before, they present low-budget but high-spirited interpretations of three of the motion pictures up for honors: Out of Sight, The Truman Show, and Armageddon.

Having been a teenage cinephile myself at the time, I can tell you that none of those movies made as much an impact on me as Andersons own Rushmore, which introduced the hyper-ambitious young slacker Max Fischer to the world. In it, Max and his players adapt Sidney Lumets Serpico, and later put on an elaborate (and explosive) pastiche of various Vietnam War pictures.

Kirk Hammett Fears it May be Too Late to Rejoin Exodus "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

LOS ANGELES Thrash metal legend and rhythm guitarist for Metallica Kirk Hammett admitted he has serious doubts that hell ever be able to rejoin Exodus, the band he created 44 years ago, several sources hidden behind their lawyers exclaimed.

The last couple of decades with Metallica have been fun and everything, but after reading the comments online about our new record, Im starting to feel like maybe leaving Exodus was a mistake, Hammet said while being surrounded by several large bags of money. The millions and millions and millions of dollars Ive made with Metallica is great and all, but I really only do it to fund my monster movie memorabilia collecting habit. I just want to go back to making kickass thrash metal again, and I dont think Lars and James would be all that into that idea.

Current lead singer of Exodus Steve Souza weighed in on the idea of having Hammit rejoin the band.

I personally feel like if it were 10 or maybe even 20 years since leaving the band we could make it work, but 40 plus years simply isnt feasible, Souza explained. I think its great Metallica is trying to make an honest effort to maintain some credibility within the genre as well. Of course its not as good as Exodus new stuff, but Kirk should be happy where he is. Plus unlike Exodus, they have a repertoire of crappy songs people seem to love and will pay hundreds of dollars to see played live. Might as well live that out until retirement.

Carl Fastkill Jackson, a thrash metal expert and creator of the webzine, Pit Circus, uses modern AI technology to see what it wouldve been like had Kirk never left Exodus in the first place.

According to the data presented, had Kirk never left Exodus to join Metallica, the outcomes of both bands would obviously be very different than they are today, Fastkill stated. One big difference on the Exodus timeline is about 1996 or so. There, we see Kirk clearly cosplaying as Chris Cornell, and a buzz-cut Gary Holt rocking a goatee and chain wallet. Sure, Exodus is making millions of dollars at this time, but theyre clearly fuckin posers.

At press time, Kirk Hammett was spotted feverishly practicing the riffs for Piranha in the Metallica jam space.

Look, if you know anything about the Dead Kennedys then nothing in this ranking will surprise you, so lets make things interesting. Ill list the albums in their proper order of quality, the way our lord and savior Jesus Christ intended, and instead of reviewing the album Ill describe the affiliated lawsuit each album incurred. Sound good? No? Well fuck you, Im doing it anyway.

4. Bedtime for Democracy (1986)

Bedtime for Democracy is the best effort in giving up that the band could muster at the time. Which is why the court case most closely associated with the album was actually a simple slip and fall case in which frontman Jello Biafra, fully racked up with a neck brace and only one crutch, hobbled out of the studio on the last day of recording. The singer claims to have tripped over a slice of loose carpeting in the booth, and thats why this album blows.

But did you know that the band was later sued again over the dick poster, this time by Tipper Gore alone. Apparently she eventually grew quite fond of the boner cavalcade after many a late night studying it over and over again at PMRC headquarters, and decided to sue the band again for, as it states in the court transcript, opening [her] eyes to a bright and frightening world of sexual possibilities [she] never would have known otherwise. In this context, it really adds new meaning to the lyric invasion of the beef patrol.

Punk Avoids Paying Taxes for Sixth Straight Year by Not Knowing How to File "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

FREDERICK, Md. Local Punk Jake Mitchell avoided paying any federal or state taxes for the sixth straight year simply by failing to acquire even the slightest bit of knowledge of how to do so, confirmed multiple sources wondering if they could do the same.

Once I was on my own I knew that it was something people do every year. I took one step into H&R Block and theyre coming at me with, do you have all your paperwork? do you have your I48983 form and you cant bring a pet rat into this office, it was just straight harassment, said Mitchell. My brother turned me onto Tubrotax, but no shit, he gave me a CD. Who the fuck has a CD drive anymore? When I worked at the Mini-Mart I remember them giving me a W2. I felt like it was all written in Latin or something. I havent seen that much useless information since I read the liner notes of a Blink-182 album.

Mitchells older brother David has heard about his brothers tax troubles and even sympathizes with him in some way.

Honestly, it should be pretty easy for him. I think he only made like $750 last year. He had like four jobs but he would get fired from each one after about a week, said the elder Mitchell from his office where he specializes in real estate law. He doesnt have any bank accounts or any possessions of value. Even his supposed career managing bands doesnt really change anything. Whats he gonna do, write off the cost of a Vandals T-Shirt and a few cans of PBR?

IRS Agent Sandra Lewis says she is familiar with Mitchells delinquency and has been following his case for the past three years.

Yes, we are well aware of his tax evasion. We dont have the resources to go after large corporations cheating the system, but we have an abundance of agents ready to track down low-income tax cheats. Our system uses a sophisticated algorithm to not only find, but track these criminals as they move around, said Lewis. Hes good, hes real good. Changing his address every few months, keeping his income off the books, going by various aliases like Skunk, Cucumber, and Bigfoot, he doesnt even own a car! It seems like a crazy life, but thats what you gotta do to stay ahead of the law.

At press time, the IRS doubled its resources into the investigation of Mitchell after further details revealed he owes the federal government $47.

We Sat Down With a Straight Edge Doom Metal Fan to Figure Out His Deal "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Most doom metal fans love weed so when we saw a guy with Xs tattooed on his hands drinking Shirley Temples at the bar before an Electric Wizard show, we had to sit down with him and figure out his deal.

Lucky for us, 25-year-old straight edge doom metal fan Dave Shepherd was eager to chat about how he manages to listen to Dopethrone and Dopesmoker without smoking dope.

The Hard Times: Hey man, cool tats. Are you straight edge by any chance?
Dave Shepherd: You know it! Im probably the only straight edge person here but I dont give a shit. Someones gotta be the designated driver and Im the only one who isnt fucked up tonight.

Oh, so youre not that into the band then?
No way, Ive been waiting ages to see Electric Wizard! Ill admit that I didnt know all the words to Funeralopolis the first time I saw them, but their performance was an experience unlike any other. I felt like I was floating on a cloud of darkness above an evil castle. God, their set ruled.

That sounds really trippy. Are you sure youre straight edge?
Sure as hell! Im actually allergic to weed so my eyes got all red half an hour into the show. I ended up going to the back of the crowd to get away from the smell. Normally I try to get as close to the barricade as possible but I have to be careful not to break edge at doom shows.

So going to doom shows isnt an edge break, but being too close to the front is?
Most straight edge elders say you can see as many shows as you want as long as you never inhale. Using protection also helps. I wore a gas mask to Sleeps 4/20 show last year and had a great time. I actually got that idea from the straight edge guys on the Dopesmoker album cover.

The straight edge guys?
They wear cloaks to keep their X tattoos out of the sun and gas masks to prevent themselves from inhaling smoke in the riff-filled land. If thats not edge, I dont know what is.

Teach Truth Day of Action June 10 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Action Plan Overview | Action Plan Details
Coordinators and Co-Sponsors | Workshops and More Events

Its time to take action. . . . again.

For the past two summers, teachers rallied across the country at historic sites to speak out against anti-history education bills and to make public their pledge to teach the truth. These actions, and the AAPF #Unbanned Book Tour, have been the only national protests of this dangerous legislation.

The teacher-led rallies received national media attention, providing a valuable counter narrative to the oversized coverage of the well-funded anti-CRT movement.

Once again, we invite educators, students, parents, and community members to rally across the country and pledge to #TeachTruth and defend LGBTQ+ rights on June 10, 2023.

The situation is urgent.

Lawmakers in at least 44 states have introduced legislation or pursued other measures that attempt to require educators to lie to students about the role of racism, sexism, heterosexism, transphobia, and other forms of oppression throughout U.S. history. These laws and restrictions have been imposed in at least 18 states. The Right has declared war on teaching the truth about structural racism and sexism and on LGBTQ+ youth.

A phone-in callers Irish accent bamboozled presenters and created 2 minutes of comedy gold "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

David from Coleraine rang Talk TV to tell them about a near-death incident hed experienced on a farm.

Listen to what happened.

25 years ago, he was nearly killed on a farm when he had an accident in his 35 Massey tractor, which was split in two but the mudguard saved him. A lucky escape.

Except, thats not what presenters Lizzie Cundy and Ash Gould heard. Heres a reminder of their hilarious guesses.

AG: Two cattle came at you?
LC: Yes. They came at you and they rolled on you

AG: What happened with the cattle? How were you killed by cattle?
LC: No, they fell on him.

AG: What was that you just said Smashing two?
LC: Two cattle smashed him in two.
AG: What they came head to head and you were like a sandwich filling in the middle?
LC: Yes.

AG: What happened with the cattle, David, that nearly killed you? Its quite simple. Did you get gored?

AG: I dont know what you just said. Youre on a farm, right?
LC: And youre wearing a mask.
AG: And you spooked the cattle?
LC: You were wearing a mask, you spooked the cattle.

AG: Why were you nearly killed by a cattle?
LC: Two cattle.
AG: Its a very basic question.
LC: They squashed him. They fell on him. Theyre heavy.

Apparently, Up To 99% Of The World Is Breathing Harmful Air "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I dont think anyone thinks the majority of the air in major metropolitan areas around the world is particularly clean. That said, it is a bit surprising, at least to me, to find out that air quality the world over should be making us cringe.

The harmful pollutants are known as PM 2.5, and according to this huge recent study, only 0.001 percent of the global population live in areas where the levels are consistently below thresholds the World Health Organization (WHO) deems safe.

Harms of Mask-Wearing Misdiagnosed As Long Covid, New Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review Indicates "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

by Sayer Ji, Founder
GreenMedInfo.com

Excerpts:

A newly published meta-analysis and systematic review on mask-wearing confirms what commonsense dictates, namely, they do significant harm by interfering with normal human breathing (O2 and CO2 gas exchange), and even more astounding, may be causing symptoms that are being misidentified as Long Covid.

Today, the science is beginning to break through the outright lies and globally coordinated censorship, as evidenced by a newly published systematic review with meta-analysis and comprehensive evaluation published in Frontiers on April 5th, 2023 which strongly confirms what commonsense dictates, namely, masks interfere with normal human breathing, and that this causes adverse health effects such as exhaustion:

Masks interfered with O2-uptake and CO2-release and compromised respiratory compensation. Though evaluated wearing durations are shorter than daily/prolonged use, outcomes independently validate mask-induced exhaustion-syndrome (MIES) and down-stream physio-metabolic disfunctions.

Moreover, the newly coined, mask-induced clinical syndrome known as MIES can create symptoms that overlap exactly with what may be misidentified as long Covid-19.:

MIES can have long-term clinical consequences, especially for vulnerable groups. So far, several mask related symptoms may have been misinterpreted as long COVID-19 symptoms. In any case, the possible MIES contrasts with the WHO definition of health

This study concluded the following:

Face mask side-effects must be assessed (risk-benefit) against the available evidence of their effectiveness against viral transmissions. In the absence of strong empirical evidence of effectiveness, mask wearing should not be mandated let alone enforced by law.

The conclusion of this study confirms what many of us have been saying since the topic and eventual mandate of mask wearing as a would-be preventive measure first came up three years ago, namely, that any such measure should be backed by sol...

Textbook Critique on Reconstruction "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

One cannot study Reconstruction without first frankly facing the facts of universal lying, explained scholar W. E. B. Du Bois in 1935. Spurred by that directive, we have just posted Five Ways Textbooks Lie About Reconstruction by Mimi Eisen as an addition to our national report, Erasing the Black Freedom Struggle.

Eisen and Zinn Education Project intern Hannah Grace Howell examined some of the most commonly used U.S. history textbooks and identified five themes. Listed below, Eisen describes these in more detail with textbook examples in the article.

 1. Textbooks center Confederate states and ex-Confederates.
 2. Textbooks treat white people as subjects and Black people as objects.
 3. Textbooks marginalize Black experiences and achievements rather than centering them as the main narrative.
 4. Textbooks downplay the pervasiveness of white terror and fraud, distorting the role of the Ku Klux Klan in a much larger network of racial violence.
 5. Textbooks ask if Reconstruction was a success or failure, obscuring the...
