Background and Acquisition

The Smithfield Corporation, headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia, is known for its sausages, roasts, ribs, bacon, and more. In 2013, it was purchased by WH Foods of China, a company that generated $22.3 billion in revenue in 2017. The acquisition allowed WH Foods to expand its global presence and secure a steady supply of pork for the Chinese market, which has been affected by African swine fever and a decline in pig population. Smithfield does not disclose the exact amount of meat it exports to China, but the company sold about 38.8 million pounds of pork to the country during a few months.

Environmental Consequences

Smithfield Foods factory farming practices have come under scrutiny for the environmental damage they cause. In 2017, drone footage revealed a large, football-stadium sized lake filled with pig urine and feces at the companys largest pork farming facility. The footage, secretly recorded by Mark Devries as part of his investigative documentary, Speciesism: The Movie, exposed the harsh conditions in which pigs are raised, cramped together in long buildings and unable to move. The waste generated by these factory farms is disposed of by spraying it into the air, which has a detrimental impact on the surrounding environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also cited Smithfield Foods for violations of the Clean Water Act. In 1997, the company was fined $12.6 million for discharging pollutants into the Pagan River in Virginia. Despite these incidents, Smithfield maintains that its practices adhere to regulations and that its facilities are clean and well-maintained.

Social Implications

The communities surrounding Smithfields factory farms are predominantly low-income families, who bear the brunt of the pollution and health risks associated with these practices. Dr. Steve Wing of the University of North Carolina explains that the waste sprayed into the air can drift into neighboring communities, causing respiratory issues and other health problems. China began the development of two COVID-19 vaccines before the ruling classes even instructed the mainstream media to report on the outbreak. In a 300-page document, compiled by the United States Senate,  the rulers accuse Chinese researchers of starting work on a vaccine program in mid-November of 2019.

The mainstream media and ruling classes are using their expertise to declare that this means that China knew about the outbreak and was already preparing for it. They also claim that it adds to evidence that the country attempted to cover up early infections before the World Health Organisation (WHO) was informed on December 31.

What it looks like to rational thinkers is that this scamdemic has always been about a vaccine, and any story that convinces people to inject themselves several times with an mRNA concoction can be crafted into a narrative and spoonfed to the naive masses.

The report also concludes that the pandemic most likely resulted from a lab leak and a research-related incident in Wuhan, according to a report by The Daily Mail. The report also suggests two unintentional spill-over events may have happened just weeks apart.

One section of the report focuses on Chinas vaccine development.  Investigations by the committee show a team led by Professor Yusen Zhou, from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, filed a patent for a Covid-19 vaccine on February 24, 2020.  Experts interviewed by the investigators said it would have taken at least two to three months to reach this stage, suggesting that work must have started in November 2019, one month before China publicly released details on the virus.

According to the report, this investigation found evidence that China began SARS-CoV-2 virus vaccine development no later than November 2019.

French Cyclists Create Record-Breaking GPS Drawing of a 637-Mile-Long Dinosaur

Four French cyclists have claimed the Guinness World Record for the largest GPS drawing by a bicycle team. Their winning piece: a 1,025 km-long (637-mile-long) depiction of a velociraptor that took 43 hours and 47 minutes to complete. The dinosaur's body was drawn over the course of six days, encompassing several French counties, including Cher, Saone-et-Loire, Indre, Nievre, Creuse, Puy-de-dome, and Allier.

The group chose a velociraptor as their inspiration because it includes velo in the name, which means bicycle in French. It required a year of planning to figure out the route that would bring the dinosaur to life, and they finally began their record-breaking ride in November 2022. Guinness announced their record in March 2023.

In a world in which humans are pumping ever greater amounts of new-to-nature chemicals into the environment, were asking a lot from our detoxification systems. Your kidneys, and your liver in particular, do a lot of the heavy lifting. But theres a lot happening in our bloodstreams and within every cell of our bodies too, particularly in undoing the damage that toxins and associated free radicals can do as they circulate around our system before they are turned into less toxic, or sometimes even, more toxic, metabolites, or theyre excreted, or stored in body fat.

This is what the Orange Pill App is all about: building friendships and building a thriving Bitcoin community one meetup or connection at a time. As of this writing, there are thousands of users.

In addition to helping you to find new Bitcoiners in your area, Orange Pill App is also on a mission to orange pill businesses. How much better would it be if we could spend sats at our local bars, hotels or restaurants? That would be awesome, right?

It definitely would add some rocket fuel toward the goal of achieving a bitcoin standard. To make this happen, Orange Pill App has partnered with BTCMap.org to use demand-side pressure to orange pill merchants en masse.

The agency is doubling down on its position that nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is not a legal supplement. Action Alert!

In a letter recently made public on the federal docket, the FDA has restated the position it announced in October 2022 that NMN does not meet the definition of a dietary supplement because, in the agencys view, it was studied as a drug before it was ever sold in or as a supplement. The FDA is clearly gearing up for a ban of this critical anti-aging supplement. We need a strong, sustained grassroots response from the natural health community to protect access to this supplement; we also need to support changes in this law that threatens many other natural compounds from being turned into drugs.

The letter, dated January 23, 2023 but made public on March 29, 2023, is in response to a new dietary ingredient notification filed by Effepharm, Ltd., in November 2022 with additional information submitted in January 2023. The letter reiterates the FDAs position that NMN is not a legal supplement due to the back-channel at the FDA that weve described many times before.

For supplements that are considered new under the lawthat is, they werent sold in or as a supplement before 1994companies must submit a notification to the FDA with studies to prove that it is safe before that ingredient can be marketedthis is referred to as a new dietary ingredient (NDI) notification. But heres the issue: if a drug company files an investigational new drug application (IND) and studies that ingredient before the FDA receives an NDI notification on it from a supplement company, it can no longer be sold as a supplement.

This back-channel is threatening the existence of a number of banned through this mechanism; CBD and NAC are also in jeopardy due to this loophole. Weve explained previously that this provision inherently favors drug companies. IND applications are confidential. A drug company can file an IND on an ingredient and sit on it for years. Meanwhile, an innovative supplement company could develop that nutrient into a great product, do the studies to comply with the FDAs ridiculous notification process, and then create a market for that productand then the drug company can swoop in with their IND, kick the supplements out of the market, and create a monopoly.

Thanks to the FDA, food labels are about to get even more misleading. Action Alert!

Consumers beware: the FDA is on a crusade to make you healthier! This is undoubtedly a noble goal, but the FDA and the federal government have proven completely incapable of providing sound advice about diet and nutrition to Americans. The FDA has released a draft guidance to inform food companies about how they should make dietary guidance statements on food labels. The whole purpose of the guidance is to bring food labels into closer alignment with the recommendations contained in the Dietary Guidelines for Americansa document that is full of outdated and incorrect advice. This guidance will result in food labels that do not provide us with an accurate picture of which foods are healthy and not.

The agency explains in the guidance that its goal is to improve dietary patterns in the United States to help reduce the burden of nutrition-related chronic diseases and advance health equity. Towards that end, the FDA reminds us that they have proposed a definition of healthy to better inform consumers about healthy eating patterns (more on this below). The use of dietary guidance statements is another tool to increase the information at consumers disposal to make healthier food choices. Dietary guidance statements include things like Eat leafy green vegetables as part of a nutritious dietary pattern, or Make half your grains whole grain. The FDA explains to food companies that consensus reports from government bodieslike the Dietary Guidelinescan form the basis of dietary guidance statements.

This guidance helps to codify the problematic U.S. Department of Agricultures Dietary Guidelines. Weve analyzed the problems with the governments recommendations in previous coverage:

• Added sugar. The government recommends that Americans consume less than 10 percent of calories per day from added sugars. But why is the government recommending any added sugar at all? Integrative doctors or nutrition professionals will advise patients (in most cases) to strictly limit their sugar intake, and to eliminate added sugar completely.
• Saturated fats. Like added sugars, the Dietary Guidelines tell us to limit calories from saturated fat to 10 percent of total calories per day. The claim that saturated fat is a risk to heart health has been...

Turning breakfast cereal into a bedtime snack: A problem for the food industry is that there are only a finite number of mouths available to eat breakfast. Demographically, the percentages of kids and teenagers are declining. Sales of breakfast cereals are, in essence, capped out. Especially because more people are turning away from sugary, high-carb morning meals, which are known to produce a roller-coaster effect on blood sugar, setting the stage for increased appetite and poor food choices later in the day. Once demonized as sources of saturated fat and cholesterol, eggs are regaining their rightful place as high-protein, satiating breakfast choices.

How then, to reinvigorate the market for these high-margin, cheap-to-produce processed cereals?

Cleverly capitalizing on the pervasiveness of sleep problems among Americans, lately exacerbated by Coronasomnia, Post claims that Sweet Dreams is the first ready-to-eat cereal designed to encourage a healthy sleep routine while satisfying late-night hunger. According to recent surveys, a quarter of American adults obtained less than the requisite seven hours of sleep per night, and 15% of adults had trouble falling asleep most days or every day in the past 30 days.

The theory is that hunger pangs interfere with sleep, and that the smattering of vitamins and minerals with a dash of calming lavender and chamomile facilitate relaxation and support melatonin.

This is the question at the core of Richard Miseks short film A History of the World According to Getting Images in which he explores how historically significant footage from newsreels, government agencies, and pioneers of film are held captive behind paywalls.

Beyond the history contained within the images, Misek examines footage itself and what happens after its captured. He focuses on Getty Images, the worlds largest commercial archive, challenging its control over public footage, which it only makes available through steep licensing fees. In the case of The Miles Brothers iconic short film A Trip Down Market Street, which captures downtown San Francisco just days before the devastating 1906 earthquake, the film was digitized in 2016 by the Prelinger Archive and made available for free, while Getty charges hundreds or thousands of dollars for the rights to use the footage, depending on its intended use.

This happened in the late 90s. A local bar ran a wet t-shirt contest where the girl who won would win a lifetime of free bar drinks at the bar. They also had cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place. I dont remember how much, but it was a lot at the time.

The result was a packed bar, tons of girls entered, tons of guys spending money. My friends girlfriend at the time now his wife won first place. She was stoked. He was excited. Within a couple of weeks, the building was condemned and tore down a few weeks after being that.

A large amount of classified information has been exposed, and people want answers. Why is this young man getting arrested when other people leak to the press all the time? Who gives a 21-year-old top-secret clearance? Are there some other, less-obvious motives at work here?

One of the most important things my driving instructor told me was that every time you pass a bus in a bus stop, you should expect that pedestrians will walk out from behind it (just like here).

They cant see you and you cant see them, but they want to get to the other side quickly and dont think much about it. It was such a useful thing to learn before learning it the hard way!

Greetings, citizens! As our great state takes the bold step of legalizing marijuana this year, I am thrilled to announce that this city will be allowing the retail sale of cannabis. And with that comes a nice chunk of tax revenue. But dont worry, were going to use that money well. Mostly to increase our police force, making sure we torpedo any hard-fought gains for our communities that have been disproportionately harmed by marijuana arrests.

Look, our cops have been pretty busy these past few years. At one point, it seemed like maybe they were going to have to cut back on their murdering. But fortunately, that wasnt the case, and now were gonna need to expand the force some more.

Now, you might try to tell me that the taxes we collect from our legal cannabis establishments should be used for other town needs like the library, the schools, or maybe even the pothole-riddled roads. Everyone wants good roads, right? Not having your tires blow out every time you try to go to the grocery store should be apolitical.

All of those are fine ideas. But not as important as giving more money to our police officers. Just imagine how many arrests they can make with more funding, especially now that they have to plant drugs on people that are more expensive than weed.

Theyre gonna have to get creative. Maybe theyll use that sweet tax money to pad out the yearly civil rights lawsuit defense budget. However they use the money, the point is cannabis legalization is a HUGE step for our fine city. Its a chance to change the narrative. To empower our communities. And, above all, to make sure our police officers can buy whatever cool new murder toys they want.

Most Electric Wizard fans are well in to their 40s by now, so this policy is the perfect way for us to improve the shops reputation without landing in hot water, Throne Room manager Chuck Greene said as he restocked Delta 8 gummies. If Throne Room really wants to be an ultra-hip smoke shop, they should stop carding altogether, Sowards said loudly over a sludge riff. At the very least, they need to extend their Electric Wizard exception to include other strains of metal, for the safety and anonymity of their clientele. Under the current policy, people could get busted just for having Electric Wizard shirts in their closets. Training employees to recognize more bands and logos remedies that problem while improving the shops reputation among loyal customers.

I originally posted something on this a few years ago after talking to midwives and medical students about statistics and the language that we use when we talk to women about evidence and decision-making.

I am concerned that, whether by accident or design, the language that is used tends to over-emphasise the potential downsides of certain courses of action (or inaction) in ways that range from unhelpful to downright misleading.

I could say lots more about this, and have discussed it in almost every book that I have written.

But today I want to focus on just the one word: risk.

Because almost any time we use the word risk in relation to childbirth, we could choose to use the word chance instead.  The meaning stays the same but it is no longer cloaked in fear.

We also need different ways of saying low risk and high risk. Those are also inaccurate and misleading terms, and Ive written more on this in several of my books as well.

If you're like most people, you're consuming an unhealthy amount of sugar on a regular basis. Even if you don't consistently eat junk food, candy or sweetened beverages, most processed foods contain an excessive amount of added sugar.

The BBC documentary¹ The Truth About Sugar, revealed one serving of Pad Thai noodles has nearly 9.5 teaspoons of sugar; a package of sweet and sour chicken with rice has 12.5 teaspoons; and a serving of dry bran flakes, a breakfast that many think is a healthier choice, has 3 teaspoons.

It is crucial to understand that it's not just cakes, candies, cookies and sweets that get people into trouble with sugar. Unfortunately, even many baby foods² and formulas³ contain a shocking amount of sugar that can set your child along a lifelong path of sugar addiction and health problems.

One 2020 study⁴ examined samples of infant formula available in 11 countries and found most were higher in carbohydrates, sugar and lactose than breast milk and many contain more sugar than a glass of soda. In an article in The Conversation, one of the researchers wrote:⁵

Some formula milks have double the sugar per serving than a glass of soda. But perhaps more shocking is the fact that there are so few regulations in place to control sugar content and to make sure consumers are well informed.

As you consider the data from studies in the past decade, it's easy to understand why child health advocates are strong promoters of breastfeeding and are fighting to provide healthier infant nutritional alternatives to mothers who do not breastfeed.

High-Fat, High-Sugar Junk Food Changes Your Brain

The featured study⁶ published in Cell Metabolism was performed by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Cologne, Germany, in collaboration with a team of scientists from Yale University.⁷ The researchers sought to understand the underlying mechanism between eating foods high in fat and sugar and the associated risk of obesity and altered brain dopamine function.⁸

New research is emerging showing glycine is a powerful longevity enhancer, one that's not only inexpensive but also has a pleasant, slightly sweet flavor. Research shows glycine extends lifespan in worms, mice and rats while improving health in models of age-related disease.¹ If there were any doubt about its importance, consider that collagen the most abundant protein in your body² is made mostly of glycine. It's also a precursor to glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that declines with age.

As noted by Siim Land, author of "Metabolic Autophagy," in the video above,³ however, there are two glycine benefits that appear key to its actions as a veritable fountain of youth inducing autophagy and mimicking the longevity benefits of methionine restriction.⁴

How Glycine May Influence Aging

Glycine is a receptor for the enzyme glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT), which plays a role in methionine clearance, according to a review published in Ageing Research Reviews.⁵ Glycine is the acceptor for GNMT, an enzyme responsible for methionine clearance. GNMT converts glycine to sarcosine, "an autophagy-inducing metabolite."⁶

Further, in mice deficient in GNMT, levels of free methionine may be seven-fold higher, while S-adenosyl-L-methionine may increase by 35-fold.⁷ This matters, as methionine is involved in cancer cell growth and metabolism, while methionine restriction inhibits cancer cell growth.⁸

Its easy to forget that at one point, not so long ago, all food was organically grown in a way that supported the ecosystem and environment. This abruptly changed in the 1940s when the Green Revolution took hold and industrial, chemical-dependent farming techniques quickly spread to become the norm.

Organic farming sustained mankind for millennia. Industrial farming, on the other hand, has created a series of unsustainable situations in less than 70 years, and evidence suggests we may not make it until the end of the century if we continue along this path.

The good news is that there are answers, and that a growing section of our farming communities are starting to heed the warning signs. Consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of the problems associated with industrial farming and are demanding higher quality, more nutritious foods grown in a way that supports rather than strips the environment of its resources.

Industrial Farming Has Led Us Down a Dangerous Path

Topsoil destruction, erosion and desertification are all exacerbated by industrial practices such as tilling, chemical use, monocropping and not using cover crops. Maria-Helena Semedo of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has warned that at the current rate of topsoil degradation, all the worlds topsoil will be gone in less than 60 years.¹

At that point, itll be game over because without topsoil you cannot grow food no matter how many chemicals you add. Closely related problems are the loss of soil fertility and biodiversity, which is directly related to the loss of natural carbon in the soil.

An estimated 80% of soil carbon in heavily farmed areas has already been lost² due to destructive plowing, overgrazing and the use of carbon-depleting chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These practices, along with poor water management approaches, also contribute to climate change.³

Overall, the importance of carbon sequestration simply cannot be overstated. Not only will it reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) load in the atmosphere, but once sequestered in the soil, the carbon actively nourishes...
