Over the past few years, AI-generated art has risen in popularity and garnered controversy along the way. Some artists, however, are showing that there are many ways to incorporate this tool into their creative practice. Jenni Pasanen merges AI technology with her digital paintings to create surreal illustrations with an ethereal aesthetic.

With a background in design and animation, Pasanen has been painting digitally for about 15 years. The direction of art drastically changed when she discovered AI art two years ago. Since then, she has been exploring ways to seamlessly combine these two approaches into one cohesive work of art. I always describe the process as a cake with layers. Adding a layer on top of one another, mixing the two together, and sometimes adding other elements like animation, photography, or 3D, she tells My Modern Met.

Pasanen's unique illustrations look like visions from a dream. Faceless figures gracefully float in smoky, pastel-colored backgrounds and murky landscapes overlooked by cloud-like animals. For me, inspiration comes from anywhere, from an AI-generated image to a distant memory or even a stick I saw on the street, she continues. That's because we build our own reality from our surroundings and experiences; our life is a story we tell ourselves and that's what we paint on the canvas.

Music historian Gabriel McCurdy explained that the needs of musicians change as they get older.

When bands like Aerosmith are young the only things that theyre thinking about are getting high and screwing until the break of dawn, said McCurdy. IDLES Have Great Idea for Song After Watching Dog Eat Vomit in Front of Buckingham Palace "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

LONDON British rock band IDLES are back in the studio working on a new single after being inspired by a dog eating vomit in front of Buckingham Palace, grossed-out sources report.

And for a band that vehemently denies being a punk band, this sure seems like something a punk band would write about. I will say though, I could see them returning to the gritty, energetic sound of Brutalism with this one though, which would be exciting.

Representatives of Buckingham Palace are not thrilled about the bands plans to write about what they are calling a PR nightmare.

Shit: This Guys Cover of Wonderwall Is Actually Pretty Good "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Wow, this guy brought an acoustic guitar to a coffee shop open mic. Im sure he will just astound us with technical ingenuity and lyrical insights beyond our comprehension. That is, of course, assuming he wont just do a clunky rendition of something everyone remembers from the 90s.

Wait.

No, he cant be.

Hes actually playing fucking Wonderwall.

Okay, this is probably just a joke and hes only doing the first few lines. Oh, never mind, it looks like hes well into the second verse. I guess commitment to the bit helps with the irony?

But it doesnt seem like hes being ironic. Hes not making any goofy faces or singing in a purposefully bad Liam Gallagher impression. In fact, hes got a really nice voice. Its kinda got that Sturgill Simpson quality where its gritty but also has an unmistakable vulnerability.

And hes definitely not just doing a complete retread of the original. Hes given it a more rustic feel, yet it doesnt feel like some kind of novelty. Honestly, hes kind of making it his own.

This is like hearing a used car jingle on a stradivarius. This dude is giving me an emotional reaction to Wonderwall, what the fuck is his problem?

He looks like hes in his early 30s. So, surely, hes old enough to know that after a decade-plus of unwanted frat bro covers at parties, Wonderwall has become something of a punchline. I mean, I think we can generally agree that its a good song. But playing a sincere cover of it, in 2023, just boggles the mind. Doesnt he remember the Anyway, heres Wonderwall meme from a few years back?

Well, maybe he does. But hes showing no apparent sign of self-consciousness. Hes not douchey or anything. Hes justpresent, playing a song I hadnt heard brought up in a non-ironic context in years. Its actually kind of inspiring. It at least makes me want to put on (Whats the Story) Morning Glory? when I get home. Great, great album. Jesus, what is happening to me?

Review: Green Day Dookie "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Each week The Hard Times travels back to review a classic album of the past. Sometimes its even a good one. This week were taking a closer look at Green Days smash hit Dookie. Also, if youre reading this, please send help.

This album is nothing short of legendary. Its got classics like Basketcase, When I Come Around, and several other quintessential tracks about getting high and masturbating. Its so good that I havent listened to a single other album in years. Thats because I picked Dookie as part of Tower Records Desert Island Album Challenge promotional campaign back in early 2006, and Im still stuck on this sandy hellscape in the middle of the ocean today while slowly going mad from dehydration.

Long story short, it was supposed to be a three-day challenge kind of thing, but Ive been here for seemingly decades now. Starting to think Tower Records shut down entirely and just forgot to pick me up. If I ever get rescued, I vow to only buy CDs from Borders Books and Music.

I still remember the very first time I heard this album though. It wasnt soon after when I signed some agreement in-store that allowed the music media giant to blindfold me and drop me out of a moving plane onto this desolate beach with nothing but a pocket knife, CD player, and Dookie. Got to be honest, their business model doesnt seem very sustainable.

In terms of the album though, Longview seems to be a song about boredom. That one really speaks to me here. So does Chump since thats exactly how I feel after willingly participating in this ridiculous challenge. Welcome to Paradise was pretty cool for the first few days I was here because of all the palm trees and sunshine, but the hidden track All By Myself now feels more accurate to how Im feeling.

One silver lining is that I learned how to build a fire, capture fish with my bare hands, and make shelter out of branches, twigs, and leaves. However, at some point, I got so hungry that I had to consume my physical copy of Dookie to avoid starvation. As much as I loved listening to this album, I have to say it tastes even better when you havent eaten in days.

Dominator vs. Partnership Cultures: A Profound Re-Telling of Human History "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

From Jordan Bates: Riane Eisler, a world-renowned Austrian-born American systems scientist, writer, and social activist, has proposed that we ought to understand human cultures and societies in terms of two fundamental categories: dominator and partnership. In her landmark work, The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, our Future, she suggests that our conventional social categoriesreligious vs. secular, right vs. left, capitalist vs. communist, Eastern vs. Western, and industrial vs. pre- or post-industrial, etc.are insufficient to describe the whole of a societys values, beliefs, and institutions.

Eisler argues that these categories overlook the fact that, historically, many societies in all of the aforementioned categories have been unequal and violent, whereas some societiesthe majority of which existed millennia agohave been much more equalitarian and peaceful. Eisler points out that we lack a frame of analysis that encompasses the differences between these latter societies/cultures and the vast majority of societies/cultures that are prevalent today. Thus Eisler turns to the historical and archaeological record to argue that throughout human history, sociocultural systems have existed on a continuum between the extremes of dominator and partnership systems. A couple of passages from her website seem a worthy starting point for understanding the definitions and profound implications of these categories:

In the domination system, somebody has to be on top and somebody has to be on the bottom. People learn, starting in early childhood, to obey orders without question. They learn to carry a harsh voice in their heads telling them theyre no good, they dont deserve love, they need to be punished. While health agencies make a big stink about unsterilized foods such as raw organic milk, the food associated with the greatest number of foodborne illnesses is factory farmed chicken.

According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics,¹ there were 5,760 reported foodborne outbreaks between 2009 and 2015, resulting in 100,939 illnesses, 5,699 hospitalizations and 145 deaths. Of these, chicken was responsible for the most outbreak-associated illnesses 3,114 illnesses in total (12%), followed by pork and seeded vegetables, each of which was responsible for 10% of illnesses. As noted by CBS News:²

"'No other food, it turns out, is quite as problematic as chicken the heart-healthy alternative to red meat. Though fish and dairy technically caused more 'outbreaks,' chicken sickened the most people ...

'Chicken is a reservoir for salmonella,' explains Thomas Gremillion, director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation of America.

Though proper cooking can kill most salmonella strains, normal food preparation techniques like using a sponge to clean up spills or rinsing your chicken in the sink tend to spread the bug around your kitchen, he says. That can 'cross-contaminate' your sink, cutting boards and vegetables.'

'This CDC report shows that government inspectors and industry need to do more to protect consumers from unsafe chicken,' says Gremillion.

US Life Expectancy Falls in Historic Decline

Allopathic medicine has been a leading cause of death in the U.S. for over two decades. In 1998, researchers concluded that properly prescribed and correctly taken pharmaceutical drugs were the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.

Two years later, in 2000, Dr. Barbara Starfield published her groundbreaking paper, "Is US Health Really the Best in the World?"¹ in which she provided data showing that medical errors by doctors were the third leading cause of death. Little has changed since then.

In this interview, one of my favorite comedians, Jimmy Dore, and I discuss the propaganda machine surrounding all things COVID. Ive posted many of his videos on this site, as I enjoy his direct and incisive commentary. Like me, Dore grew up in Chicago, Illinois. They made it sound like if you got COVID, it's going to go find the most vulnerable part of your body, it's going to infect it and kill you. I was scared to death. So, I knew I was going to take the vaccine and I was afraid to look into it. This is true, right? Because I knew I was going to take it anyway, and because both of my doctors had told me to take it, because they didn't know any better. None of us knew at the time that they were suppressing accurate information. I didn't know that. Neither did my doctors.

At that time, we didn't know there were other doctors out there with another narrative. I didn't know about the Great Barrington Declaration. I didn't know there were leading scientists and doctors who had a different idea. I didn't know what a criminal Dr. Fauci was. I didn't know that he did the same thing in the AIDS crisis.

So, I took the vaccine, I got sick, and never got better. It was just horrible side effects. I had 180/120 blood pressure. I could have had a stroke at any moment. I had nerve pain, nerve damage. I was diagnosed with occipital neuralgia, which if you know what that is, it's the most wicked stiff neck you've ever had in your life....

Recent months for us have been very full, very busy, and have gone by very quickly. With that, around the 22^nd of March I said to myself, Didnt this month just start? It cant be coming to an end already. When I realized just how quickly time was flying by, I had another realization: April is just around the corner. That means April 2^nd is coming up also.

On some calendars, April 2^nd means its World Autism Day. Some people will take today and even all month long, to celebrate autism. Theyll laud it, but I prefer not to celebrate my sons disability. I wont celebrate any disability for that matter. Ill promote appropriate treatment for autism and being able to access it. But I wont ask for anyone to cheer for something thats had devastating effects on my childs health.

I certainly wont ask anyone to revel in the fact that the CDCs new autism rate increased yet again. Called an all-time high and categorized as trending upward, news reports shared the 1 in 36 autism rate last week.

Do we write praise reports when cancer strikes? Or would we ask the entire nation to celebrate an increase in cancer rates. No! So why expect that for a diagnosis that can have similar effects on families?

What can we do instead?

For starters, ignore the requests to celebrate the day. Call today something else (Today is Sunday, so refer to it simply as that.). Do something else today that has nothing to do what these national calendars are encouraging people to do. Or pick another national day to talk about. The April 2^nd date also shows that today is International Childrens Book Day.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day is listed, too.

Whoever gets the pick the theme of the day must have a fun spirit about them because its also National Love Your Produce Manager Day.

If none of those catch your fancy, fear not.

The United States has decided to extend the deployment of the George H.W. Bush carrier strike group to provide options to policymakers after last weeks deadly attacks in Syria by Iran-backed forces, U.S. military officials said on Friday.

The decision likely means the Bush strike group and its more than 5,000 U.S. forces, which are now in the European Command operational area, will not be returning to home port in the United States on schedule.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Colonel Joe Buccino confirmed the carrier groups extension, which was first reported by Reuters.

The extension of the George HW Bush Carrier Strike Group, inclusive of the USS Leyte Gulf, the USS Delbert D. Black, and the USNS Arctic, allows options to potentially bolster the capabilities of CENTCOM to respond to a range of contingencies in the Middle East, Buccino said in a statement.

3 Dead In Burundi From Mysterious Nosebleed Disease "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A hemorrhagic mystery disease has killed three people in Burundi. The unknown nosebleed disease has infected people in the northeastern part of the African country, close to the borders with Tanzania and Rwanda.

All three victims reportedly died within 24 hours of their symptoms emerging. Health chiefs have now been dispatched to the Kirundo and Muyinga provinces to investigate the nature of the illness, according to a report by The Daily Mail. As of now, details about this illness are limited.

While the symptoms of the mysterious disease mimic those of the potentially lethal Ebola and Marburg viruses, the Burundi Ministry of Health has however ruled out both illnesses. The current Marburg outbreak in Equatorial Guinea is thought to be the fourth largest ever recorded. Seven people have died there since mid-February, and officials have counted 29 confirmed and probable cases, up from 16 last week. Local news website SOS Media Burundi reported that the symptoms of the illness include abdominal pain, nasal bleeding, headache, fever, vomiting, and dizziness. These symptoms mimic those of the potentially lethal Ebola and Marburg viruses.

Last week an 18-year-old student was admitted to the hospital with symptoms, including bloody vomiting and diarrhea, and nose bleeds, the ministry reportedly said. He died the same day and a dignified and secure burial was reserved for him, they reportedly added.

Another outbreak of Marburg is currently ongoing in Equatorial Guinea, on the west coast of Africa.

Seven people have died there since mid-February, and officials have counted 29 confirmed and probable cases, up from 16 last week.

Zur 2. Verhandlungsrunde berichtete die Tagesschau (und alle anderen), dass die Arbeitgeber 5% geboten haben ("Laufzeit 27 Monate" wurde dann noch am Rande erwhnt)

Jetzt nach der 3. Verhandlungsrunde:
Zitat:"Die Arbeitgeber htten acht Prozent mehr Einkommen und einen Mindestbetrag von 300 Euro sowie eine Einmalzahlung von 3000 Euro angeboten. (...) Die Gewerkschaft ver.di und der Beamtenbund dbb fordern 10,5 Prozent mehr Einkommen, mindestens aber 500 Euro mehr im Monat."

Da kann man doch nur zum Schluss kommen, dass die gierigen Gewerkschaften den Hals nicht voll kriegen. 8% vs. 10.5%, ein bisschen muss verdi auch nachgeben statt wg 2.5% das Land wieder "in Geiselhaft zu nehmen", oder?

Die 5% der 2. Runde schlsseln sich folgendermaen auf:

eine tabellenwirksame Erhhung von drei Prozent Ende 2023 und

zwei Prozent Mitte 2024

eine Laufzeit von 27 Monaten

Inflationsausgleichsprmie in zwei Raten von 1.500 und 1.000 Euro.

Und eine Anhebung der Jahressonderzahlung fr alle Beschftigten

Die Laufzeit-Details werden sich im Angebot der 3. Runde vermutlich nicht gendert haben. In fast allen Meldungen kein Wort mehr dazu. Bei einer Inflationsrate von 9% (8-10% je nach Quelle) bedeutet das auf die 27 Monate berechnet einen Reallohnverlust von ca. 13%!

Dass die Arbeitgeber ihre Angebote mglichst intransparent und kompliziert machen, verstehe ich ja, dass die Gewerkschaften (wie in der Vergangenheit hufig) auf so einen Laufzeit- und Einmalzahlungsschei eingehen, finde ich schlimm. Aber dass selbst die serisesten Medien in frhlicher Diskalkulie irgendwelche Prozentwerte einfach addieren und von 8% oder 5% sprechen regt mich malos auf. Geboten wurden jeweils weniger als 4% fr die beiden kommenden Jahre. Aber 8% klingt einfacher.

Aus meiner Sicht muss die Schlussfolgerung lauten, dass die Tagesschau einfach nicht mehr unter die serisesten Medien fllt.

Oldest Brain Discovered in 319 Million-Year-Old Fish Fossil

Fish are generally not known to be clever critters with tremendous brain power. Goldfish, in particular, are believed by many to have three-second memory spans, but that's not true. Another fish's brain has recently grabbed the spotlight for a different reason. A 319-million-year-old fish fossil sitting in the Manchester Museum has revealed that within its skull are a brain and cranial nerves that are the oldest well-preserved vertebrate brain ever discovered. This rare find has excited researchers around the world and is described in a Nature paper.

Discovered over 100 years ago in a Lancashire, UK, mine, the fossil was encased in soapstone. It has since sat in the museum but was recently examined by researchers. Known as Coccocephalus wildi, it is the only specimen found of its kind. Although just the skull was discovered, the fish likely stretched six to eight inches. While not originally looking for a brain, researchers discovered a strange object in the skull using CT scans. Like vertebrate brains, the object was bilaterally symmetrical, contained hollow spaces, and had multiple filaments (like cranial nerves). The brain folds inward, unlike in today's living ray-finned fishes.

Vertebrate brains decay quickly, so finding fossilized specimens is unusual. Likely the dead critter was quickly enshrouded in sediment with low oxygen levels. Senior author of the paper Sam Giles of the University of Birmingham said in a statement, This unexpected find of a three-dimensiona...
