After 20 Years, the Department of Homeland Security Is a Money-Guzzling Failure "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In March 2003, the newly christened Department of Homeland Security, or DHS, opened its doors. The department took everything from immigration enforcement and counterterrorism to airport security and disaster response under one gargantuan bureaucracy. Despite these wide-ranging missions, the department's unifying logic in the post 9/11 era has been to wage the so-called war on terror at home. The result has been systemic abuse of minority communities, a dangerous militarization of American life, and a massive waste of money that sapped resources from addressing the real threats to our homeland. DHS agencies have militarized U.S. streets, sending officers in tactical gear to respond to civilian protests and conducting surveillance of U.S. citizens engaged in constitutionally protected activities. There are stories of DHS drones surveilling Indigenous water and land protectors and DHS forces spying on Black Lives Matter protesters. DHS even monitored journalists who reported on the department's tactics. None of these abuses have come cheap. Since its founding in 2003, the U.S. has spent $1.4 trillion on the agency. That's more than seven times what the government spent over the same period on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including the CDC's COVID-19 pandemic responseand more than five times more than on the Environmental Protection Agency. The [DHS] was supposed to be about making the U.S. safer. But it has failed.

Note: A thorough investigation reveals details on the DHS "Disinformation Governance Board," an unsuccessful effort in 2022 to police online speech it considers inaccurate and dangerous. Now, the DHS board and its key subcommittees are undergoing sweeping changes as public concern grows over social media censorship and government overreach.

US courts must stop shielding government surveillance programs from accountability "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Under a post-9/11 surveillance program known as "Upstream", the NSA is systematically searching Americans' internet communications as they enter and leave the United States. The agency sifts through these streams of data looking for "identifiers" associated with its many thousands of foreign targets identifiers like email addresses and phone numbers. The NSA does all of this without warrants, without any individual judicial approval, and without showing that any of the people it is surveilling including countless Americans have done anything wrong. This surveillance raises serious constitutional concerns, but no court has ever considered a legal challenge to it because the government has claimed that allowing a suit against Upstream surveillance to go forward would implicate "state secrets". In 2007, for example, an appeals court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Khaled El-Masri claiming that, in a case of mistaken identity, he had been kidnapped and tortured by the CIA. The court acknowledged the public evidence of El-Masri's mistreatment but held that state secrets were too central to the case to allow it to go forward. And in 2010, a different appeals court dismissed a lawsuit filed by five individuals who claimed that one of Boeing's subsidiary companies had flown the planes carrying them to the black sites where they were tortured by the CIA. This use of the state secrets privilege to dismiss cases departs from the supreme court's narrow framing of the privilege.

A Four-Decade Secret: One Man's Story of Sabotaging Carter's Re-election "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

It has been more than four decades, but Ben Barnes said he remembers it vividly. His longtime political mentor invited him on a mission to the Middle East. What Mr. Barnes said he did not realize until later was the real purpose of the mission: to sabotage the re-election campaign of the president of the United States. It was 1980 and Jimmy Carter was in the White House, bedeviled by a hostage crisis in Iran that had paralyzed his presidency and hampered his effort to win a second term. Mr. Carter's best chance for victory was to free the 52 Americans held captive before Election Day. That was something that Mr. Barnes said his mentor was determined to prevent. His mentor was John B. Connally Jr., a titan of American politics. Now Mr. Connally resolved to help Mr. Reagan beat Mr. Carter. What happened next Mr. Barnes has largely kept secret for nearly 43 years. Mr. Connally, he said, took him to one Middle Eastern capital after another that summer, meeting with a host of regional leaders to deliver a blunt message to be passed to Iran: Don't release the hostages before the election. Mr. Reagan will win and give you a better deal. Mr. Connally's files indicated that he did, in fact, leave Houston on July 18, 1980, for a trip that would take him to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel before returning to Houston on Aug. 11. Iran did hold the hostages until after the election, which Mr. Reagan won, and did not release them until minutes after noon on Jan. 20, 1981, when Mr. Carter left office.

Facial recognition bias frustrates Black asylum applicants to US, advocates say "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The US government's new mobile app for migrants to apply for asylum at the US-Mexico border is blocking many Black people from being able to file their claims because of facial recognition bias in the tech, immigration advocates say. The app, CBP One, is failing to register many people with darker skin tones, effectively barring them from their right to request entry into the US. People who have made their way to the south-west border from Haiti and African countries, in particular, are falling victim to apparent algorithm bias in the technology that the app relies on. The government announced in early January that the new CBP One mobile app would be the only way migrants arriving at the border can apply for asylum and exemption from Title 42 restrictions. Racial bias in face recognition technology has long been a problem. Increasingly used by law enforcement and government agencies to fill databases with biometric information including fingerprints and iris scans, a 2020 report by Harvard University called it the "least accurate" identifier, especially among darker-skinned women with whom the error rate is higher than 30%. Emmanuella Camille, a staff attorney with the Haitian Bridge Alliance ... said the CBP One app has helped "lighter-skin toned people from other nations" obtain their asylum appointments "but not Haitians" and other Black applicants. Besides the face recognition technology not registering them ... many asylum seekers have outdated cellphones if they have cellphones at all that don't support the CBP One app.

U.S. Hardware Is Fueling Russia's Facial Recognition Crackdown on Anti-War Dissidents "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Russia has been using cameras powered by facial recognition systems to crackdown on dissidents, according to reporting from Reuters. Several Russian companies are using algorithms trained and powered by chips made by U.S. firms Intel and Nvidia. Reuters said that one of the companies even received money from U.S. intelligence. On March 4, 20022a week after it launched its full scale invasion of UkraineRussia made it illegal to publicly criticize the war. The report from Reuters details how facial recognition software has aided the Kremlin in its crackdown against dissidents. There are more than 160,000 cameras in Moscow and 3,000 of them are connected to facial recognition software. According to Moscow court records, the technology has aided in the arrest of hundreds of protestors. In one case, a man stood alone near a fountain in Pushkin Square with a home-made poster that said "Peace to Ukraine." A week later he was boarding a subway when police ushered him into their station and explained that the computer system had recognized his face. The software powering the [system] was created by three companies: NtechLab, VisonLabs, and Tevian. Tevian and NtechLab are based in Moscow, while VisionLabs is based in the Netherlands. According to Reuters, the companies used chips designed by Intel and Nvidia to train their systems. It also reported that one of the firms joined a U.S. facial recognition test program and received $40,000 in prize money from "an arm of U.S. intelligence."

Note: Tools of centralized power continue to support warmongering agendas, with US-based tech companies controversially supplying facial recognition technology to Ukraine and now to Russia, despite the US deeming Russia as the enemy. Big oil on campus: how US universities are 'colonized' by the fossil-fuel industry "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Even as elite American universes such as Harvard have bowed to pressure to divest their multibillion-dollar endowments from fossil fuels, and student activists take recalcitrant holdouts to court, oil and gas companies continue to exert a grip upon campus life, through funded research and the physical presence of oil and gas industry employees in lectures and meetings with faculty. Fossil-fuel firms have purposely sought to "colonize" academia with industry-friendly science, rather than seed overt climate denial, according to Ben Franta, a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford who has studied industry's influence over universities. Their research dollars, he said, had effectively discouraged academic endeavors that challenge the core business model of burning oil and gas, instead shifting the focus to favored topics such as capturing carbon emissions from polluting facilities, a still niche technology that would allow industry to continue business as usual. The reach of fossil fuels into academia "never ceases to amaze me", said Robert Brulle, an environmental sociologist at Brown University. "You can barely study climate change at elite universities and not be funded by fossil-fuel companies," he added. "They drive all this study into carbon capture, so that influences policy and becomes a part of the Biden administration's agenda. The influence is profound, and the students are right to be wondering what kind of education they are getting here."

The links between pollution and miscarriage: 'This is the stuff nightmares are made of' "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The world we live in is slowly poisoning every single one of us. And the chemicals doing the most damage are byproducts of the fossil fuel industry, agribusiness and manufacturing. There doesn't seem to be the appetite at a regulatory or governmental level to stop it. In Australia, 50,000 agricultural, industrial and veterinary chemicals are being used; 1,500 are suspected to interfere with endocrine function, which is essential to the healthy working of our reproductive and hormonal systems. Only a very small number have been tested. Microplastics, which can cause inflammation in the body, is being found in our blood streams and also in the placentas of unborn fetuses. Walking down a major intersection during rush hour can expose you to as much particulate matter as a major bushfire event. Even if chemicals are tested, the testing regimen means that chemicals are only being tested in isolation and not in conjunction with others to see how compounds react. Also, they might be tested for carcinogenic effects ... but the test subjects aren't monitored for other ill-effects, such as endocrine disruption. Some effects take place long after the research has concluded. Some of these chemicals can stay in the body forever. Or affect the way our DNA functions. Theres even an Australian website (not widely enough publicised) called yourfertility.org.au. It has an entire section on chemicals in our environment and what to avoid, stating that avoiding these chemicals may increase the chance of having a baby.

Federal Agencies Are Still Using Our Phones as Tracking Beacons "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Recent reports about the Secret Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement playing fast and loose with rules regarding cellphone tracking and the FBI purchasing phone location data from commercial sources constitute an important wake-up call. They remind us that those handy mobile devices many people tote around are the most cost-effective surveillance system ever invented. "The United States Secret Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI) did not always adhere to Federal statute and cellsite simulator (CSS) policies when using CSS during criminal investigations," the Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General reported last month. "Separately, ICE HSI did not adhere to Department privacy policies and the applicable Federal privacy statute when using CSS." The OIG report referred to the use of what is commonly called "stingray" technologydevices that simulate cellphone towers and trick phones within range into connecting and revealing their location. "They also gather information about the phones of countless bystanders who happen to be nearby," the ACLU warns. Even the most precise phone company location data remains available with court approval. The courts are currently mulling multiple cases involving "geofence warrants" whereby law enforcement seeks data not on individuals, but on whoever was carrying a device in a designated area at a specified time.

Geofencing Warrants Are a Threat to Privacy "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The House committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021, is nearly finished. Nearly 900 ... criminal prosecutions of alleged rioters remain underway, and one case has shed troubling new light on how the FBI investigated these defendants. The suspect's name is David Rhine. His lawyer is the first to present a potentially successful challenge to the geofencing warrant the FBI used to place some defendants inside the Capitol building during the attack. A previous Wired report last year found 45 federal criminal cases citing the warrant, which required Google to provide the FBI with data on devices using its location services inside a set geographic area. Rhine's case has revealed just how expansive the FBI's request to Google really was. Google initially listed 5,723 devices in response to the warrant, then whittled the tally to exclude likely Capitol staff and police as well as anyone who wasn't "entirely within the geofence, to about a 70 percent probability." The final list of identifying details handed over to the FBI had 1,535 names. It included people whose phones had been turned off or put in airplane mode, and "people who attempted to delete their location data following the attacks were singled out by the FBI for greater scrutiny." It's ... easy to envision geofencing warrants undergoing the usual surveillance mission creep. Left unchecked, law enforcement could decide geofence data would come in handy while looking for a journalist's whistleblowing source, or perhaps at political protests.

Air Force paid $1,280 apiece for coffee cups "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The US Air Force is facing more questions as to why it spent tens of thousands of dollars over the last three years on large cups that can reheat beverages, like coffee or tea, on refueling tankers and cargo aircraft during flight. Despite being assured by Air Force Secretary Dr. Heather Wilson earlier this month that the service has "suspended its purchasing of the exorbitantly priced cups," Sen. Chuck Grassley sent a follow-up letter last week asking for further explanation as to why they were purchased in the first place. Grassley raised the issue of the cups in an October 2 letter to Wilson after reports surfaced this summer that the 60th Ariel Port Squadron at Travis Air Force Base had spent $1,280 on each cup in 2018 a dramatic increase from the $693 per-cup price in 2016. In her response to that letter, Wilson said the Air Force has spent $326,785 on nearly 400 cups since 2016 an average of $817. "You are right to be concerned about the high costs of spare parts, and I remain thankful to have your support in addressing this problem," Wilson told the senator in a letter dated October 17. The increasing cost of the cups was first reported ... in July as part of a report on how airmen at Travis Air Force Base are attempting to use 3D printing to develop a cost-effective way to replace the cups' plastic handles, which have a tendency to break. "Unfortunately, when dropped, the handle breaks easily leading to the expenditure of several thousand dollars to replace the cup as replacement parts are not available," the Air Force said.

Meet the 'glass-half-full girl' whose brain rewired after losing a hemisphere "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In most people, speech and language live in the brain's left hemisphere. Mora Leeb is not most people. When she was 9 months old, surgeons removed the left side of her brain. Yet at 15, Mora plays soccer, tells jokes, gets her nails done, and, in many ways, lives the life of a typical teenager. "I can be described as a glass-half-full girl," she says, pronouncing each word carefully and without inflection. Her slow, cadence-free speech is one sign of a brain that has had to reorganize its language circuits. Yet to a remarkable degree, Mora's right hemisphere has taken on jobs plasticity, the process that allows a brain to modify its connections to adapt to new circumstances. People like Mora represent the upper bounds of human brain plasticity because their brains were radically altered very early in life a period when the wiring is still a work in progress. During an interview with Mora, both her abilities and deficits were apparent. So was her outgoing personality and curiosity about the world. Mora began by telling me a joke: "How do you make a hot dog stand?" she asks. "You take away its chair." What scientists still want to know is precisely what allowed Mora's brain to rewire so extensively. One thing is clear: Understanding the basis of this sort of extreme plasticity, they say, could help millions of people whose brains are still trying to recover from a stroke, tumor, or traumatic injury. And Mora is helping scientists deepen their understanding, simply by being herself.

A fish can sense another's fear, a study shows "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Our capacity to care about others may have very, very ancient origins, a new study suggests. It might have been deep-rooted in prehistoric animals that lived millions of years ago, before fish and mammals like us diverged on the tree of life, according to researchers who published their study Thursday in the journal Science. Scientists are usually reluctant to attribute humanlike feelings to animals. But it's generally accepted that many animals have moods, including fish. The new study shows that fish can detect fear in other fish, and then become afraid too and that this ability is regulated by oxytocin, the same brain chemical that underlies the capacity for empathy in humans. The researchers demonstrated this by deleting genes linked to producing and absorbing oxytocin in the brains of zebrafish. Those fish were then essentially antisocial they failed to detect or change their behavior when other fish were anxious. But when some of the altered fish received oxytocin injections, their ability to sense and mirror the feelings of other fish was restored what scientists call "emotional contagion." "They respond to other individuals being frightened. In that regard, they behave just like us," said ... neuroscientist Ibukun Akinrinade, a co-author of the study. The study also showed that zebrafish will pay more attention to fish that have previously been stressed out a behavior the researchers likened to consoling them. Previous research has shown that oxytocin plays a similar role in transmitting fear in mice.

Psychedelic brew ayahuasca's profound impact revealed in brain scans "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The brew is so potent that practitioners report not only powerful hallucinations, but near-death experiences, contact with higher-dimensional beings, and life-transforming voyages through alternative realities. Often before throwing up, or having trouble at the other end. Now, scientists have gleaned deep insights of their own by monitoring the brain on DMT, or dimethyltryptamine, the psychedelic compound found in Psychotria viridis, the flowering shrub that is mashed up and boiled in the Amazonian drink, ayahuasca. The recordings reveal a profound impact across the brain, particularly in areas that are highly evolved in humans and instrumental in planning, language, memory, complex decision-making and imagination. The regions from which we conjure reality become hyperconnected, with communication more chaotic, fluid and flexible. "It is incredibly potent," said Robin Carhart-Harris, a professor of neurology and psychiatry. "People describe leaving this world and breaking through into another that is incredibly immersive and richly complex, sometimes being populated by other beings that they feel might hold special power over them, like gods." He added: "DMT breaks down the basic networks of the brain, causing them to become less distinct from each other. The major rhythms of the brain that serve a largely inhibitory, constraining function break down, and in concert, brain activity becomes more entropic or information-rich."

Man bekommt halt, was man bezahlt.

... this Declaration shall continue in effect until twenty one (21)years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King CharlesIII, King of England living as of the date of this Declaration

Our focus in this paper is on post-hoc global model interpretability for the application domain of network security problems.
Das hat ein Mensch formuliert. Nicht ChatGPT. Ich kann nur sagen: Hut ab!
However, the set of requirements that we impose on the DT explanations is non-standard and makes this a challenging problem [...] For one, we require that our new DT extraction method be model-agnostic; that is, applicable to any given black-box model. Second, we also demand that the method produces high-fidelity DT explanations; that is, DTs whose expected predictive performance is similar to that of the black-box model
Wait what? Diese Forderungen sind neu? Das hat man bislang nicht gefordert?!?
The third requirement we impose is that the extraction method also results in low-complexity DT explanations such that selected parts of the DTs are intelligible and comprehensible (i.e., easy to understand by domain experts) and accurately describe how the black-box model makes most of its decisions.

Critical Psychiatry Textbook, Chapter 7: Psychosis (Part Three) "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Editors Note: Over the next several months, Mad in Gtzsches book, Critical Psychiatry Textbook. In this blog, he discusses the lack of evidence for benefit, and the evidence of harms, of psychosis drugs used for early intervention/first-episode psychosis. Each Monday, a new section of the book is published, and all chapters are archived here.

Early intervention? Yes, but not with psychosis drugs

An argument for using psychosis drugs was that it is harmful not to intervene early, and the term duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) was often used. It was claimed that DUP worsens the prognosis for schizophrenia and similar disorders;16:194,17:326,18:79,18:233 19:235,20:416 that it is harmful for the brain to be psychotic;18:98,20:416 and that with early intervention, a chronic course can be prevented for many patients17:326 who can be taught to handle their vulnerability.18:80

These arguments are not correct. When a drug doesnt work for a disease but only pacifies the patients, it cannot be important to use it early in the course of a disease. Furthermore, the researchnone of which was referencedthat claims that the duration of untreated psychosis is related to the prognosis is unreliable. People who are not treated early are not comparable to those treated early and they are in a worse condition, on average, with a host of prognostic factors that bode for a poor long-term outcome, e.g. homelessness and alcoholism.

It is not possible with statistical methods to adjust reliably for such differences. As already noted, the more variables you include in a logistic regression, the further you are likely to get from the truth50 (see Chapter 2, Part Two).

Mercury: The Messenger of the Gods

Mercury is the divine communicator, a channel between the mortal and immortal worlds. In mythology, Mercury was considered the Messenger of the Gods and could pass down insights and information from the heavens.

Mercury rules over our mind, third eye, thoughts, and communication style. At times, it can have a playful, trickster energy that can influence our experience with technology, travel, and contracted agreements.

Mercury enters retrograde about four times a year, making it a normal part of its cycle through the cosmic skies. When Mercury enters retrograde, we may find communication a little more challenging. We could find it difficult to make decisions, or experience issues with technologies, travel, or contracts.

Ancient astrologers believed that when Mercury was retrograde, it traveled through the underworld, collecting lost, hidden, or untapped messages from deep within our subconscious.

For this reason, it is recommended to wait before signing contracts, having important conversations, or making travel plans until Mercury emerges from its journey, as upon its return from the underworld, it could have brought new information, changing how we feel and, consequently, our plans.

How to Use the Energy of Mercury Retrograde

While Mercury is moving through the underworld, it is a good time to slow down, go back over things, revisit the past, and pay attention to subconscious thoughts and programming. Mercury retrograde can be a healing and highly intuitive time when we use it this way.

Mercury Retrograde can also trigger our psychic abilities, guiding us to step away from the information in our seen world and instead rely on the information in the unseen world.

Our dreams may also become more prophetic at this time or give us deeper insights into our subconscious. (If you want to work deeper with your dreams during Mercury Retrograde, check out this workbook!)

Mercury Retrograde tends to have a negative reputation, but everything is neutral in astrology. Its what we make the of the energy and how we choose to use it.

While Mercury Retrograde may not be considered favorable to sign long-term contracts, purchase expensive travel tickets, or buy a new computer...

Although our contemporary world loves GPS, we'll never tire of the beautiful artistry and tactility of a globe. <a href="http://www.bellerbyandco.com/index.php/" rel= "noopener" target="_blank">Bellerby & Co. Globemakers is one of the very few workshops in the world still handcrafting globes. Based in London, the company creates a variety of bespoke orbs to suit any space.

The Bellerby & Co. artisans spend months, if not years, training as globemakers. They use a combination of traditional and modern techniques to craft the instruments. It all begins with a perfect sphere, which itself is difficult to achieve. Then, the company makes edits to a map to update the cartography or personalize it for a customer; this meticulous process can take years to get right.</p> <p>Once the map is ready, its printed and cut into shapes called <em>gores</em> and is painted by hand with watercolor. The artisans then apply those strips to the globe. Its a very fragile procedure, but once all of the pieces are successfully applied, Bellerby & Co. adds more watercolor details and seals it with a finish. The globe is then placed on a base and finished according to the customer's preference.

The company makes globes in many sizes, from small orbs that will fit on a desk to large floor models that are 50 inches tall. The variety of sizes represents the demand for globes that still exists today. A globe is a work of art and a nostalgic thing for many people, Jade Fenster of Bellerby & Co. tells My Modern Met. A high-quality globe is also something that you will keep for a lifetime and perhaps pass down to future generations. Just like there is always a demand for paintings and quality furniture, people want to fill their homes with things they love, that tell a story, that are hi...</p></p>

CleanSpark Reports 22% Increase In Bitcoin Mined For Q1 2023 And Provides Washington Expansion Update "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The company continues to grow its hash rate, with a Washington expansion set to facilitate 86MW of mining capacity.

CleanSpark, Inc. has released its unaudited Bitcoin mining and operations update for March, 2023. The company announced that it had mined 598 BTC in March, taking the total mined in the first quarter of the calendar year to 1,871, up 22% from the previous quarter. CleanSpark funded growth and operations through the sale of 502 bitcoin in March 2023, which equated to proceeds of approximately $12.4 million, at an average of approximately $24,800 per BTC.

"Our approach to proprietary mining gives us substantial control and flexibility over our destiny, and the progress on our Washington expansion is a perfect example," said Zach Bradford, CEO of CleanSpark. "The 50MW expansion is on schedule. The machines have already been purchased and shipping is expected to commence this month. Once those machines are racked and the expansion is energized, our hashrate is expected to increase to about 8.7 EH/s, giving us substantial progress toward our calendar year-end goal of 16 EH/s."

CleanSpark's Washington expansion is a passively cooled data center consisting of four primary buildings. The expansion is expected to hold about 15,000 Antminer S19j Pro+ machines once complete, with total capacity in Washington amounting to 86MW, with the majority sourced from low-carbon, on-grid energy. According to the press release, Building 1 is complete and ready for miners, with racks currently being installed in Building 2. The foundation was recently poured for Building 3, while concrete deliveries are imminent for Building 4.

"We are on schedule in Washington," said Scott Garrison, vice president of business development. "One building is completely done and ready for miners, with the other buildings in various stages of construction, each advancing according to schedule. Our teams and partners, which include the utility, city, and various construction firms, are working hand-in-hand for the build. Im so proud of what we are accomplishing on the ground in Washington as we work to build some of the most efficient bitcoin mining infrastructure in North America."

According to the press release, CleanSpark intends to use all capital levers available, including equity and bitcoin, carefully balancing both to provide the highest rate of return for shareholders.

"In this environment, a miner that is not growing is falling behind. As hashrate grows, we also need to grow. Growth takes substantial capital, just as it does in any commodities-ba...

What instantly kills the vibe at a party? 19 absolute mood slayers "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Its been a while since weve been to a party you know, a proper party but its not been so long that we cant relate to each and every one of these.

What instantly kills the vibe at a party?

And these 19 are absolute mood slayers, every one.

I was at a staff party with an open bar, and it reached the time when the first clusters of guests were leaving.

When they went to get their coats from the closet, they discovered a young new team member who we thought had left hours ago. He had stripped off all his clothes, made a nest of jackets, soiled everything, and passed out.

Killed the vibe for sure.

Bless his heart. Did he ever show up for work again?

He peed and had diarrhea, unfortunately. He did show up to work on Monday, but he only lasted a week or two before he left the organization. Yikes. Maybe watch the 18 year olds when you have an open bar.

The Other Art Fair is set to return to Chicago from April 27 to 30, showcasing its annual weekend of independent art, workshops, and community-driven exhibitions.

The fairs signature series has been running since 2011 with local editions held in London, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, and Sydney. Presented by Saatchi Art, The Other Art Fair aims to break down the stuffy and tired gallery art scene, making the art marketplace accessible to both independent artists and local communities. Each fair features more than 100 independent and emerging artists and offers art at nearly every price point. It also combines art with live performances, immersive installations, food trucks from popular local vendors, and a bar, creating a lively neighborhood open house art party atmosphere rather than the typical expos.

The CDC Starts Warning Of Marburg Virus "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has finally started to warn the public about the Marburg outbreak in Africa. Marburg is a hemorrhagic disease and has a case fatality rate of 23-90%. This one, if it spreads further will get attention this time in Bill Gates infamous words about a second scamdemic.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Marburg has epidemic potential, so this week, the CDC announced that it is sending its National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases to respond to the outbreaks in Guinea and Tanzania.

In February, Equatorial Guinea announced the first outbreak of the virus and the country has since counted officially nine cases with an additional 20 probable cases, all of whom have died, according to the WHO. About 1,800 miles away, across the continent, Tanzania is also reporting a Marburg outbreak and has confirmed eight cases, including five deaths, according to WHO.

ALERT: Marburg Fever Outbreak!

This week, the CDC urged travelers in Guinea and Tanzania to avoid contact with sick people, and healthcare facilities in the outbreak areas, and to watch for symptoms for three weeks after leaving the area, according to a report by Fox News.

The Marburg virus can be spread through the blood or body fluids of a person infected with or who has died from Marburg, according to the CDC. The CDC further states that clinical diagnosis of Marburg virus disease (MVD) can be difficult. Many of the signs and symptoms of MVD are similar to other infectious diseases (such as malaria or typhoid fever) or viral hemorrhagic fevers that may be endemic in the area (such as Lassa fever or Ebola). This is especially true if only a single case is involved.

Blockware Solutions Launches ASIC Marketplace To Simplify Bitcoin Mining Access "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

The new marketplace enables customers interested in acquiring hash rate to easily compare different miner listings.

Blockware Solutions, a professional Bitcoin mining services company, has announced the public launch of its Blockware Marketplace. The new platform has been operating in stealth mode with only existing Blockware clients according to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, and the total trading volume has already reached about $100,000, mostly within the last two weeks.

According to the announcement, the Blockware Marketplace is a product that brings transparency and "turnkey mining" to a whole new level by allowing anyone to buy an ASIC using either on-chain bitcoin or Lightning. Users can also see its historical and live hash rate before purchasing. Customers will be able to start earning bitcoin mining rewards in minutes, making it easier and more accessible for people to participate in the mining industry.

"We think this has the potential to transform the mining industry as now anyone can buy an ASIC (On-chain or Lightning), see its historical and live hashrate before purchasing, and be earning BTC mining rewards in minutes," said Joe Burnett, head analyst at Blockware.

The Blockware Marketplace is designed to simplify the process of buying and selling ASICs, as the screenshot above shows. The simple UI shows the stats of the miners, hosting information and price in BTC. An account sign up is required to utilize the marketplace, which is open to the public starting today.

Culture is represented in many ways, capturing the essence of a period, place, and presence. One way that cultures survive the passage of time is through physical items that hold symbolic meaning within them. Our visual culture is apparent in the things we wear, and jewelry is a time-honored part of this human tradition. The online shop Namik is sharing the Indigenous artisans whose work is the soul of Mexico. Its offerings are handcrafted by these creatives. The jewelry is inspired by a legend or belief from Mayan and Aztec cultures, and/or the personal storiesof self-love, success, and braveryabout the artisans themselves.

Namik, which is run by partners who wish to remain anonymous, views these tales as being an important component of the stores products. We believe that these stories and emotions are imbued in each piece of jewelry, making them amulets that remind us every day of the love and beauty that surrounds us, Namik tells My Modern Met. Our social mission is to preserve and share the history and culture of the Mayan and Aztec civilizations, as well as to empower Indigenous artisans from Mexico.

One of Namiks partners hails from a mining town in Mexico where countless families have earned a living creating silver jewelry. My father taught me this art form, just as his father taught him before, they write. Unfortunately, our community suffered the scourge of slavery for many years in the past, which has had a lasting impact on the dreams and aspirations of our people, especially regarding their artistic work. To remedy this, we are striving to teach them how to break away from this limiting mindset and instead promote a culture of collaboration and communal support, rather than one of competition.

Like many people, photographer Marisa Ishimatsu was once afraid of snakes. But after a friend in college opened her eyes to the beauty of these reptiles, her fear dissipated and transformed into a creative passion. She began actively seeking out and photographing snakes over a decade ago, and her latest adventure brought her to Africa. There, together with fellow photographer Thor Hakonsen and several others, she set out on a mission to photograph all six species of adder found in Namibia.

The group spent 10 days scouring Namibia for these snakes. Thanks to a local guide's help, the group eventually tracked down and photographed all six species. This includes the Peringuey's adder, a sidewinding snake that expertly camouflages itself in the sands of the Namib Desert, and the Namaqua Dwarf adder, which is the world's smallest venomous snake.

For Ishimatsu, it's not only about photographing the animals, but exposing others to the ordinary habits of these snakes. I don't like to sensationalize them to something more frightening or more dramatic...

What the heck is sociogenomics? "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

I was asked recently about sociogenomics, and I had to stop and think because I was unfamiliar with the word. At a guess, I thought it would about looking for correlations between genes and socioeconomic groups, ethnicities, and races using tools like genome wide association studies and polygenic scores you know, Bell Curve shit. To me, it sounded ominous and catastrophically bad, something that would shift into plain old eugenics and evolve into Nazi shit. But what do I know? I had to go look it up. I was just guessing.

Guess what? I guessed right.

Sociogenome is the comprehensive study of the role of genes and gene-environment (GxE) interaction on reproductive behaviour. Until now, social science research has focussed on socio-environmental explanations, largely neglecting the role of genes.

Drawing from recent unprecedented advances in molecular genetics we examine whether there is a genetic component to reproductive outcomes, including age at first birth, number of children and infertility and their interaction with the social environment.

Uh-oh. Theyre just going to take modern genetic techniques and apply them to sociology. But these techniques will not give them the answers they want! Theyll reveal rough correlations, but they wont untangle genetics and environmental factors they cant. This is a problem that has been pointed out to behavioral genetics researchers for years, and they just go sailing on ahead.

In the past decade and a half, sociologists and demographers have sought to integrate genetic data into their empirical analyses. To do so, they have drawn on recently developed high-throughput sequencing and genotyping technologies, which allow the entire genome to be mapped. They also follow in the line of a research specialty, behavioural genetics, which rose to prominence in the 1970s. This area, which focused notably on the genetic determination of intelligence, attracted severe criticisms, including among demographers (Jacquard, 1978; Vetta and Courgeau, 2003; Courgeau, 2017). However, these criticisms do not always seem to have been heard, and the emergence of new data and techniques has given rise to new problems, as indicated by calls for caution from learned societies in human genetics (Socit franaise de gntique humaine, 2010; Risch, 2016; Socit franaise de gntique humaine, 2018).

Lets look at an example of a sociogenomics study that was summarized in Wired. It does not reassure me.

The UK BioBank is the single largest public genetic repository in the world, with samples of the genetic blueprints of h...

Children with Autism Are More Likely to Be Diagnosed with Psychiatric Comorbidities "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Anxiety Disorder Developed in Late Childhood Can Lead to Subsequent Psychiatric Conditions

A longitudinal follow-up study examining the mental health of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has recently been published in Journal of Affective Disorders. The authors used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to analyze records of 13,382 children and adolescents with ASD and 53,528 age- and sex-matched non-ASD controls between 2001 and 2009. The research followed participant records until the end of 2011. At that time, subjects who developed schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were identified. The authors discovered that children and adolescents with ASD were at an increased risk of developing schizophrenia, BD, depressive disorder, and OCD than the control group. Additionally, the results showed that individuals with ASD were more likely to develop BD and depressive disorder at an earlier age. This study also discovered that for children with ASD who develop psychiatric comorbidities, anxiety disorder occurred first, usually in late childhood, with psychotic and affective disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, BD, depressive disorder) proceeding in adolescence. Compared to participants with ASD alone, the diagnosis of anxiety disorder increased the likelihood of subsequent psychiatric comorbidities. According to the authors, the early onset of anxiety disorders in ASD is this researchs  most clinically significant finding.

Prenatal Antibiotic Exposure Linked to an Increased Risk of Autism "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Higher Risk Observed in First and Second Trimester Exposures and Lasting Longer than 14 Days

Canadian researchers recently assessed whether prenatal exposure to antibiotics is associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring born at term. To investigate this hypothesis, the authors used a population-based retrospective cohort study that included mothers who delivered a live singleton-term infant in British Columbia between April 2000 and December 2014. Exposure was defined by the study as using antibiotic prescriptions during pregnancy.  Outcome was recognized as an ASD diagnosis by the British Columbia Autism Assessment Network by December 2016. After analyzing the data, the authors discovered a small to moderate ASD risk associated with gestational antibiotic exposure. Additionally, the team observed that the most significant risk for ASD was associated with antibiotic exposure lasting longer than 14 days. The authors pointed out that previous research revealed an increased risk of ASD when the antibiotic exposure occurred during the second and third trimesters. However, their study identified the highest risk in the first and second trimester exposure. The researchers observed roughly the same ASD risk for both vaginal and cesarean deliveries and a lower risk associated with combined prenatal and labor and delivery antibiotic exposure. They pointed to evidence that exhibits differences between microbial profiles of infants by mode of delivery and exposure to intrapartum antibiotics, with differences in bacterial abundance and diversity. Consequently, the authors suggest that an altered microbial colonization at birth, and its potential impact on infant neurodevelopment, is not a likely contributor to the association between prenatal antibiotic exposure and ASD. They propose that the risk observed in the first and second trimesters could be due to the susceptible periods for metabolic programming by the maternal microbiome. Ultimately, the authors concluded that their findings need more research to be considered clinically significant.

Jukhee Kwon Revives Abandoned Books in Elaborate Paper Sculptures and Installations "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

In elaborate sculptures that range from a few inches to several feet, South Korean artist Jukhee Kwon explores the duality of destruction and recreation to give new life to abandoned books. Painstakingly manipulating old tomes by hand, she constructs intricate tendrils and chains of paper still attached to the spines, cutting between the lines so that the text remains legible and merges into new narratives.

Currently based in Italy, Kwon finds books published in Italian like Guerra e Paceor War and Peaceto provide the starting point for her work. In others, the title of the book is obscured completely by loops and curls of paper. The artist repetitively twists, ruffles, weaves, or links the pages, creating a variety of meshes and draping forms that cascade from the binding and vary greatly from one piece to the next. In Meditation, she incorporates the craft tradition of jong-i jeobi, the Korean word for origami, and the original marker ribbon provides a focal point in Red Circle Book.

Kwon suggests there are numerous ways to comprehend what we see. A flower could also be a medallion; a series of curtain-like columns mimics waterfalls; and woven webs form baskets or provide the shelter of nests. Paralleling the way great writing contains multiple layers of meaning, the artist is interested in exploring different interpretations, visualizing how thoughts and experiences metaphorically unfurl and blossom.

Sad but necessary: Ant researchers pull fossil paper over errant claim "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

A group of insectologists is receiving praise on social media for retracting a 2022 paper in which they claimed, erroneously, it turns out, to have discovered a novel ant fossil.

The paper, An Eocene army ant, appeared in November in Biology Letters, a Royal Society title. The authors were led by Christine Sosiak, of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, in Newark. The paper has yet to be cited, according to Clarivate Analytics Web of Science.

According to Sosiak and her colleagues:

Here we report the oldest army ant fossil and the first from the Eastern Hemisphere (EH), Dissimulodorylus perseus, preserved in Baltic amber dated to the Eocene. Using a combined morphological and molecular ultra conserved elements dataset spanning doryline lineages, we find that D. perseus is nested among extant EH army ants with affinities to Dorylus. Army ants are characterized by limited extant diversification throughout most of the Cenozoic; the discovery of D. perseus suggests an unexpected diversity of now-extinct army ant lineages in the Cenozoic, some of which were present in Continental Europe.

But not long after the paper appeared, other ant experts informed the researchers that their ant advance was not an emissary from the Eocene Epoch after all.

According to the retraction notice

Shortly after the publication of this report the authors were contacted independentl...

The Dollar Is In Trouble! Here Are 7 Signs That Global De-Dollarization Has Just Shifted Into Overdrive "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.

For decades, the U.S. dollar was the undisputed king of global currencies, but now dramatic changes are happening.  China, Russia, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and other nations are making really big moves that will enable them to become much less dependent on the U.S. dollar in the years ahead.

This is really bad news for us because having the primary reserve currency of the world has enabled us to enjoy a massively inflated standard of living.  Once we lose that status, our lifestyles will be much different than they are today.  Unfortunately, most Americans dont understand any of this.  Even though our leaders have treated the stability of our currency with utter contempt in recent years, most Americans just assume that the dollar will always reign supreme.  Meanwhile, much of the planet is preparing for a future in which the U.S. dollar will be far less important than it is right now.  The following are 7 signs that global de-dollarization has just shifted into overdrive

#1 The BRICS nations account for over 40 percent of the total global population and close to one-fourth of the global GDP.  So the fact that they are working to develop a new currency should greatly concern all of us

The Deputy Chairman of Russias State Duma, Alexander Babakov, said on 30 March that the BRICS bloc of emerging economies Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa is working on developing a new currency that will be presented at the organizations upcoming summit in Durban.

The transition to settlements in national currencies is the first step. The next one is to provide the circulation of digital or any other form of a fundamentally new currency in the nearest future. I think that at the BRICS [leaders summit], the readiness to realize this project will be announced, such works are underway, Babakov said on the sidelines of the Russian-Indian Strategic Partnership for Development and Growth Business Forum.

Babakov also stated that a single currency could likely emerge within BRICS, and this would be pegged not just to the value of gold but also to other groups of products, rare-earth elements, or soil.

#2 Two of the BRICS nations, China and Brazil, have just...

With RGB, The Bitcoin Lightning Network Can Now Transfer Altcoin Assets "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

With the RGB protocol, users can allocate altcoins to Bitcoin UTXOs, enabling stablecoins transfers on the Lightning Network and more.

The Lightning Network is arguably the most impactful and important innovation ever seen in Bitcoin. It enables fast and cheap transactions that take up no space on the blockchain, while preserving all of Bitcoin's censorship-resistant and trustless features. While Lightning still has space to grow and improve, both in terms of technological stability and adoption, it has already proven to be an irreplaceable solution for cheap, trustless payments, with more than $100 million in network capacity and an ever-growing number of businesses adopting it as a payment method.

Such innovations favor the adoption of Bitcoin, but they can also be beneficial for other types of digital assets. Currently, most blockchain-based digital assets are issued as altcoins, which do not offer the same guarantees of security and censorship resistance as Bitcoin does, as they aim to achieve cheap, low-latency transactions by sacrificing decentralization, meaning that they operate as de facto semi-centralized systems. But with the ability to move digital assets over the Lightning Network, many use cases that require cheap and fast transactions could finally be able to benefit from Bitcoin's trustlessness as well.

One already popular use case that would certainly benefit from that would be stablecoins. Examples like USDT are already widely-used for digital payments and remittances, especially in developing countries where the legacy financial infrastructure is not always functional and the local currencies are volatile.

With Lightning, more and more people could adopt stablecoins and use them for payments. This would be beneficial in improving the financial stability of people otherwise forced to use a local currency that is (even) more unstable than the U.S. dollar, while also bringing them one step closer to adopting Bitcoin as they become familiar with its technology, even while they are still not comfortable with its volatility. Also, additional digital assets on Lightning would not only benefit the diffusion of stablecoins and other tokenization use cases, but they would simultaneously help Bitcoin itself, as more technologically-compatible infrastructure would be built (e.g., the payment terminal accepting stablecoins on Lightning would very easily also accept bitcoin).

Moreover, once there are stablecoins and ot...

Amid changing climate, Bangladesh farming groups conserve indigenous rice seeds "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Salinity intrusion triggered by different factors, including sea-level rise, commercial shrimp cultivation and a decrease in water flow from transboundary rivers upstream, has directly affected agriculture in the southern coastal districts of Bangladesh some of which are also major producers of rice, the national staple. Government agencies have been desperately trying to invent and promote high-salinity-tolerant paddy varieties, with some degree of success. However, there are no evident shifts in agricultural patterns, as traditional paddy growers generally switch to other saline-friendly crops, or different professions, when faced with difficulties in growing rice. Yet one man who surprisingly lives in one of the worst salinity-hit areas in Bangladesh stands out as a stark exception. As traditional paddy farmers in his area are switching to other crops, Sirajul Islam, a middle-aged farmer from Shyamnagar Upazila in Satkhira, has been collecting and preserving seeds of indigenous salinity-tolerant paddy breeds. So far, he has collected a staggering 218 different varieties of paddy. He does not just collect the seeds; he also encourages fellow farmers to cultivate them. Sirajul Islam with fellow farmers, harvesting paddy. Image by BARCIK. Once, I had to travel 100 kilometers [60 miles] to collect a particular kind of seed. I took the trouble because I heard it could significantly resist salinity, Sirajul said. Many of these paddy varieties were nearly out of use, as farmers in recent decades leaned heavily toward high-yielding varieties. That makes Sirajuls seed bank even more important. Usually, after collecting a particular kindThis article was originally published on Mongabay

To restore Brazils Cerrado, planting trees is a bad option, experts say "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

When it comes to environmental destruction in Brazil, the worlds focus tends to be on the deforestation and burning of the Amazon. Yet the Cerrado, the second-largest Brazilian biome, at 2 million square kilometers (772,000 square miles), is being silently destroyed. Today, only 54.4% of the region is still covered with native vegetation, and a much smaller proportion (around 20%) remains untouched. This has prompted several proposals from well-meaning conservation activists to recover the Cerrado by planting forests. That, however, would be a mistake, experts say: the Cerrado is a savanna, and a savanna is not a degraded forest. Forestry engineer Giselda Durigan, from the ecology and hydrology lab at the So Paulo state Environmental Research Institute, says the idea of recovering a degraded area must be preceded by defining what degradation means in the first place. For savannas and forests, this term has varied definitions, she says. Degradation conditions are very different in the Cerrado, and restoration challenges will also be different for each of them. The process of humans occupying and therefore changing the Cerrado intensified at the turn of the 1950s to the 1960s, with road and rail construction bringing migrants to the region from across Brazil. They were attracted by the governments development-driven farming policies aimed at integrating the Cerrado into the rest of the country, thus creating the conditions for expanding commercial agriculture. The result is the current state of degradation of nearly half of the Cerrado. To make matters worse, the areas that haventThis article was originally published on Mongabay

In Brazil, scientists fight an uphill battle to restore the disappearing Cerrado savanna "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Braslia National Forest is a Paris-sized oasis of green surrounded on three sides by concrete satellite cities that serve Brazils capital city. Extensive trails and expanses of forest make it popular among mountain bikers and joggers who can be seen running beneath the shade of pine and eucalyptus trees. So when Gustavo Paiva started cutting down the pine trees to grow shrubs and grasses as part of a restoration project, lots of people would ask him, What are you doing? How is this restoration? He tells me this on a late January as we drive in a muddy 44 down a dusty red road. People working in savanna restoration get this reaction quite frequently. People associate trees with nature, and restoration with more trees not fewer, says Paiva, a restoration expert who works for Tikr, one of the first private companies focused on restoration in the Cerrado, the vast Brazilian savanna. The pine trees in this area are remnants of a large-scale timber program from the 1970s that has since fallen into obscurity. Theyre also invasive species, crowding out the native savanna vegetation and harming local biodiversity. Once you get rid of them, Paiva says, waving his hand at the low savanna shrubs around us, underneath it all is the Cerrado. Large tracts of native savanna and grasslands exist mainly in state and federal parks like this one, Pirineus State Park in Goias. Image by Sarah Sax. Ryuichi Sakamoto, RIP: Watch Him Create Groundbreaking Electronic Music in 1984 "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Ryuichi Sakamoto was born and raised in Japan. He rose to prominence as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, the most influential Japanese band in pop-music history. Last week, he died in Japan. But he also claimed not to consider himself Japanese. That reflects the dedication of his lifes work as a composer and performer to cross-cultural inspiration, collaboration, and synthesis. How fitting that the announcement of his death this past weekend should elicit an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues around the world, sharing his work from a variety of different stylistic and technological periods in a variety of different languages.

Fitting, as well, that the first documentary made about Sakamoto as a solo artist should have been directed by a Frenchwoman, the photographer Elizabeth Lennard. Shot in 1984, Tokyo melody: un film sur Ryuichi Sakamoto captures not only Sakamoto himself on the rise as an international cultural figure, but also a Japan that had recently become the red-hot center at least in the global imagination of wealth, technology, and even forward-looking imagination. It was in the Japanese capital that Sakamoto recorded Ongaku Zukan, or Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia, the album that showed the listening public, in Japan and elsewhere, what it really sounded like to make music not just in but of the late twentieth century.

Report: Increasing Number of Math Rock Bands Not Meeting States Minimum Requirements "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

WASHINGTON A recent study conducted by Georgetown University showed that at least 90 percent of active math rock bands fail to meet their states minimum proficiency standards.

This study shows that were failing the latest crop of math rock bands by allowing them to release music with standard time signatures and basic chords, stated Christina Martin, the studys lead researcher. When we began our research, we knew that diminished output from existing bands and low turnout at shows was a problem, but it goes much deeper. On average, your modern-day math rock band is scoring maybe 5.5 or 6 on Pitchfork and thats if they can even manage to get the reviewer to listen to the album at all. Its appalling and there needs to be educational reform in the scene or else American math rock will be completely overshadowed by Japanese math rock in less than a decade.

Math rock musicians shared their thoughts on the recent news and defended their genre and scene against the criticism.

I didnt even know that there was such a thing as proficiency standards for a music community. My dad taught me how to play guitar at home and I know just as much as fancy college kids at Berklee, said Tommy Olsen, guitarist of Mississippi-based math rock band The Helix Theory. Sorry, we cant all be Slint, but were not trying to be. Not all math rock needs to be overly complicated. Basic addition and subtraction are considered math, right? So the fact The Helix Theory only plays in 4/4 should still classify us as math rock.

Government regulators were concerned by the studys findings and are considering taking action.

If local scenes cant show marked musical improvements, then we have a responsibility to step in and enact a federal standard, said Department of Education spokesperson Amy Leverbraun. The minimum should be American Football and these bands are barely cracking the Travistan level. Were currently working with South Korea to start a math rock exchange program and are also in talks with Steve Albini to lead a task force to come up with common standards for all math rock bands to meet, but those have stalled because he keeps telling us to go fuck ourselves with a lead pipe.

At press time, officials announced a bipartisan agreement to finally classify geographical boundaries that would allow a band to call themselves Midwest Emo.

Slow Burn Indie Horror Has Actually Been Paused For 40 Minutes "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

WALLINGFORD, Conn. Horror fan Rebekah West recently mistook her paused TV screen for a tense, slow-burning scene from experimental found footage horror film The Outwaters, confused and spooked sources confirmed.

Right around the beginning of the second act the characters are attacked after hearing weird noises in the distance. Suddenly, the camera stops, and eerie clicking noises, whispering, and groans continue on the soundtrack, West said. This was a bold and effective choice. Or so I thought. But after almost an hour of nothing happening on screen I realized I accidentally sat on the Roku remote. And the sounds werent coming from the TV, but from the neighbors sprinklers and my roommate masturbating to ASMR porn. I started the movie up again, and it was okay, but nothing compared to that one horrifying scene I apparently made up in my mind.

The Director/Writer/Star of The Outwaters Robbie Banfitch took Rebekahs viewing mistake as a compliment.

Its flattering, Banfitch said. We were just trying to tell a simple story about a group of friends making a minimalist music video in the desert. Im thrilled we were able to create an atmospheric, immersive experience. And to think, the movie worked even without the movie actually playing is a game-changer for filmmakers. This could open up a whole new world of meta-filmmaking in which the viewer just sort of imagines what happens next, but still pays us to watch the movie.

Andrea Bever, Host of the Colors of Horror podcast, reported that this experience coincides with the rising liminal horror trend.

Between Creepypastas and movies like Skinamarink, theres been an explosion in the exploration of uncanny feelings in familiar places, said Bever. And the beauty of it is, its so easy to pull off. Just juxtapose something innocent from a typical Millennials childhood with something spooky. A lost episode of Street Sharks where Ripster strangles Streex to death? Sure, why not? Or how about the Babadook running around an abandoned Rainforest Cafe? Those are two billion-dollar ideas just off the dome, baby.

At press time, West has seemingly not learned her lesson as she recently mistook the DVD menu for the film Lost Highway to be the film itself.

Misdiagnosed Psychobilly Band Really a Sociobilly Band "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Former psychobilly luminaries The Rot Hodders were revealed to be accidentally misdiagnosed and will be moving forward as a sociobilly band, medical officials confirmed.

I find that my lack of a conscience just makes more room in my brain for song ideas. And the bleak, vacuum-like deadness behind my eyes? Just space for even more song ideas, opined Rot Hodders frontman Kansas Dan Freberg, while squashing a mother spider in front of its young. You see these flames on my shirt? Well, funny story, theyre actual photographs of the multiple fires Ive started around the tri-county area. Beautiful, arent they? Lives may have been lost, but I like to think they live on in our revved up rockabouts, baby. Hoo yeah.

Certain band members were reportedly shocked and even terrified by the new direction the band took.

These guys freak the shit out of me. How am I supposed to keep the beat when I see the upright bassist hack the neck off his instrument mid-song with a glean in his eye Ive only seen in rabid beasts? Sure, their riffs are red hot, but Ive got a bad feeling about these guys! said new drummer Peyton Wrigs, while actively shivering. Then Ill get to thinking, oh god, what happened to the drummer Im replacing? Ive never gotten the nerve to ask em because theyre always sharpening something or cheering on that bug zapper outside our rehearsal space. If I dont survive this tour, youll know why.

Local psychiatrist Dr. Terrald Beams apologizes for his initial diagnosis.

This band is an actual threat to society, and Im not just trying to sound like Im giving them street cred or whatever, emphasized Dr. Beams. An actual, factual, danger to those around them. Like, these guys should actually probably be locked up somewhere away from others and, to a lesser extent, their electric hollowbody guitars. I think I got lost in their rapid fire guitar licks, and for that, I deeply apologize.

At press time, a petrified Wrigs escaped the Rot Hodders to drum for an agoraphobibilly band that never leaves their practice space.

Peter Gtzsche teams with an antivaxxer to exaggerate the harms of COVID-19 vaccines "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

Peter Gtzsche, formerly leader of the Nordic Cochrane Center, has teamed with Maryanne Demasi to write a systematic review of the "harms" of COVID-19 vaccination. Besides accepting the highly dubious methodology behind one study, their preprint is yet another example of how EBM can be corrupted to promote antivax ideas.

How to Stay Safe from Increasingly Random Violence "IndyWatch Feed Allcommunity"

By the author of Street Survivalism: A Practical Training Guide To Life In The City and The Ultimate Survival Gear Handbook

Look around: its not 2019 anymore. Even though, on the surface, things may seem relatively normal, the entire zeitgeist has changed drastically already. Amidst threats of nuclear war, collapsing banks, and other potential SHTFs, the number of people losing it is growing exponentially out there.

Thats not just from the rapid decline in the standard of living but also from all the fast-paced transformations taking place globally. People can cope fine with change but struggle with uncertainty. When the capacity to absorb and adapt is overwhelmed, fear, confusion, hopelessness, and despair sets in.

Humans individuals and the collective deal with those feelings differently. The majority will just bite the bullet and march on. Some will get depressed or try to hide from the world, while others will give up in one way or another. But for many, addiction, insanity, and violence is the only possible response, the last resort. They blow a gasket and start lashing out like rats in a cage.

Do I now have to stay alert at all times when out of home?

I got asked that question by a person who, only three weeks before, had been attacked by a 13-year-old K9* addict when leaving the subway station. The kid didnt steal anything, just smacked her in the head and walked away babbling disconnect insults in a frenetic episode.

The short answer: yes, if you want to stay alive and well in 2023 and beyond, you better.
